Snowfall coats high country ton Lakes which was also closed to non-residents at Hoods Road. Methven’s Mount Hutt College decided to close for the day early yesterday morning to ensure it had an up-to-date picture of conditions in the area. Pupils were encouraged to participate in a snowman building competition on the school’s Instagram page to help pass the time. Skiers were also forced to defer their plans yesterday. Mt Hutt Ski Area sales and marketing co-ordinator, Richie Owen, said they had received 35cm of fresh snow, however it was too windy on the access road to open on Monday and they were bracing for a big day on the slopes today.

Adam Burns Parts of Mid Canterbury were coated in snow towards the end of the weekend causing road and school closures. However the region appears to have seen the worst of the wintry blast with the weather already improving in the past 24 hours. Metservice said a significant low pressure system, that has brought southerly gales, rain and snow to parts of New Zealand, was moving away from the country today. Snow warnings were confirmed for many areas of the South Island on Sunday as a deepening low made its way across the country. High country roads west of the plains succumbed to the condi-

Young Guns – Some wheelie good people Maddison Gourlay The misnomer is their Young Guns nickname because the old fellas who make up the Ashburton social cycling group have an average age of 80. Age aside, they’re generous to a fault and that was obvious yesterday when they donated $1000 to Mountain Bike Ashburton to help the voluntary organisation with the cost to repair the flood-ravaged mountain bike tracks along the Ashburton River. The track means a lot to the Young Guns, who were formed in 2009, have 20 members and who use the river tracks regularly on their fortnightly rides.

The Young Guns also take yearly trips around the South Island to see different tracks around the country and they know the value of the Ashburton tracks. “The people in the Mountain Bike Ashburton Club have done an excellent job in maintaining the tracks,’’ Young Guns’ spokesman Mervyn Gray said. “It’s obvious how much work they have put into it.’’ It sure is obvious and the need for more hard work to get the tracks back up to scratch was just as clear. Mountain Bike Ashburton Club president James Reid said he was grateful for the donation because it would help with getting the tracks alongside the river back to their full glory after the flooding. Reid also said it was enjoyable to meet another group who used the tracks and who appreciated the hard work put in by the Mountain Bike Ashburton Club.

Rakaia residents going potty Potholes becoming a frustrating safety issue Maddison Gourlay Potholes. It’s the one word that seems to be on the tip of many Rakaia residents’ tongues. The biblical-like May rainfall, which closed the Ashburton bridge and forced a State Highway One detour that saw truck drivers turn off at Elizabeth Avenue in Rakaia, has been a catalyst for the emergence of dangerous potholes around the township’s roundabouts. And that’s led to increased resident frustration. “Truck drivers that know the district, came over the Rakaia Bridge and turned at Elizabeth Avenue by the Mobil Garage and came through here,’’ Rakaia resident Graham Wilford said. “So this basically became State Highway One for the people that knew where they were going.’’ Now there were numerous potholes and confusion among residents about whose responsibility it was to fix them. Many residents were under the impression it was an Ashburton District Council concern. But residents who have contacted the council have been told by those in power told that a contractor looked after the potholes. A post on the Rakaia community Facebook page added to the debate, with many residents saying they had contacted the council about it but seemed to be getting different answers. Wilford said even with the confusion of who should fix the potholes, residents and ratepayers should be listened to when it came to issues within their town. “At this point, it has become a massive safety issue, especially on a day where it’s heavily rain-

bigger. Wilford just wants the council to fix the issue, to stop the potholes getting bigger and more dangerous. “I don’t think it’s too much to ask,” he rightly pointed out.

Treasure trove of trophies need to find their way home

Cups runneth over

Adam Burns About 100 forgotten cups and trophies, found in a community back hall, has prompted investigations by the Ashburton Museum and community groups. The collection of trophies have been gathering dust in the back room of the Tinwald Memorial Hall for more than a decade until it was recently decided that the trophies needed to be reunited with their owners. Some of the relics dated back more than 80 years. Tinwald Memorial Hall committee president John Harris said if any members of the community wanted them to get in contact. “If not, I’ll have to work out what happens with them with [Ashburton District] Council,” he said. “I can’t see why anyone would want them to sit here for another 20 years.” Old minute books found with the trophies had been taken by Ashburton Museum staff to keep in their archives. Harris said the keepsakes had been forgotten for a long time. “I haven’t heard a whisper and

I’ve been on the committee for 23 years,” he said. “The committee thought the [museum] was the best place for them.” The museum was also seeking detail on a handful of older trophies including the Walter Nash

It was believed that many of the historic mementos relate to tap-dancing, ballet and Highland dancing events and competitions.

There was speculation on a Guardian Facebook post that some of the trophies were misplaced mementos, which had been lost in translation after some sporting committees folded. The council said that most of the trophies belonged to the Ash-

Big White Out in Methven Jonathan Leask How many? Hundreds. And a lot of them were there to see if a certain dude could still roll like he used to. Around 1700 people to be exact attended the White Out Festival in Methven on Saturday, a winter festival featuring a rail jam and live music performances headlined by New Zealand rapper Scribe. Event manager Sam Smith said it was a superb night and they were already planning ahead for 2022. “Methven was packed and that was what we were trying to achieve,” Smith said. “The weather played its part luckily, it’s been really well received and we are definitely all go for 2022.” Smith said that an overall crowd of around 1700 was great and they had hoped for more until the trans-Tasman

bubble closed – impacting some acts and holidaying tourists attending. He said the transition from the Methven CBD out to the Methven Racecourse had proved a real winner and sets the event up to go bigger and better in future. “The racecourse was a perfect venue with the infrastructure already there. “The plan is to hold it there again next year and just grow it over the next few years towards what the Big Air used to be.” A rail jam competition with a steady crowd of 500 taking in the action opened the evening Mt Hutt Ski Area sales and marketing co-ordinator, Richie Owen, said, and steadily built as the focus turned towards the main stage. Among the acts, Scribe showed he still has the skills to go and rock and show like this. “Scribe was the big headliner that a lot of people came to see and it was awesome to get him to Methven for the first time,” Smith said. There was also a big following for New Zealand freestyle skier and X Games gold medallist, Nico Porteous, who performed his first DJ set at the festival, Smith said.

Confidence holds, but workforce concerns deepen The latest Federated Farmers Farm Confidence Survey shows positiveness around economic conditions, but deepening concern about the ability to plug workforce gaps. The survey, carried out by Research First in early July and drawing responses from 1422 farmers, showed a net 18 per cent of respondents considered the current economic conditions to be ‘good’. That is a 12.4 point improvement from the survey six months earlier and 46 points better than a year ago after the economy was slammed by the pandemic. Looking forward, a net 39 p e r

cent of farmers expected general economic conditions to worsen over the next 12 months, but that was actually a 5-point improvement on the January survey result. “The survey was a month ago now and I think farmers were feeling buoyed by strong commodity prices,” Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard said. “Last Tuesday we had a 1 per cent fall in the Global Dairy Trade price index, following 3.6 per cent and 2.9 per cent falls in July auctions. “The Reserve Bank has noted inflation is pushing higher and has expressed concern about risky lending, especially in the over-heated housing market. “I wonder if farmer confidence would be somewhat more dented if we ran the survey this month,” Hoggard said. A net 4.4 per cent of respondents expect their profitability to improve over the next 12 months, a 23-point increase on the January 2021 survey when a net 18.3 per cent expected it to decline. A net 32.6 per cent of respondents expect their spending to increase in the year ahead. While stronger spending intentions reflect e x p e c t aFederated Farmers President Andrew Hoggard. profitability, some of it will be related to concern about higher farm input costs. “It seems many farmers will be using those returns to try and get their debt down in the face of the tightening attitude from banks. “A net 29.3 per cent of respondents expect their debt to reduce over the next 12 months,” Andrew said. The most concerning aspect of the survey from Federated Farmers’ point of view is that nearly half of the July survey respondents said it has been harder to recruit skilled and motivated staff. That’s a further 13-point increase on the 35 per cent of farmers who cited workforce shortage worries in January. “Last week’s red hot labour market data, including the big fall in unemployment, confirms what we already knew. “It’s calving season in the dairy sector and we know there are too many farmers and staff working huge hours to look after their animals.” Asked to identify their three greatest concerns, farmers listed climate change policy and the ETS (chosen by 18.5 per cent of respondents), followed by regulation and compliance costs (17.1 per cent), and freshwater policy (11.0 per cent). “The climate change issue has leapt from No. 3 to No. 1 since January, and probably the anger over the climate/electric vehicle related ute tax is wrapped up in that,”Hoggard said.

Two Great Reasons

Take a Fonterra tanker for a spin

Members of the public will have the opportunity to find out what it is like to drive a Fonterra milk tanker at a charity rugby match being held in Ashburton on Sunday to raise money for rural communities affected by flooding. Fonterra’s interactive Good Together tanker, which has been touring New Zealand, is coming to the game. It’s a real milk tanker with a container of highly interactive stories, games and a realistic tanker simulator on the trailer.

The tanker simulator has been a real hit with people loving the opportunity to “drive” one, a Fonterra spokeswoman said. Kicking off at 12.30pm at the Ashburton Showgrounds rugby ground, a Fonterra-organised team including former All Blacks coached by Crusaders Super Rugby coach Scott “Razor” Robertson will challenge the Parliamentary rugby team in the charity game to help raise money and support for farmers affected by flooding in the South Island.

Support available for flood-affected farmers POST-FLOOD TIPS • Do a regrassing plan for flooddamaged paddocks. • Use the free feed planning service 0800 FARMING (0800 327 646) to complete a feed plan. A feed plan will help you calculate your feed demand and supply and investigate options to fill feed gaps. • Buy in feed if you need to. Source feed or grazing through the feed co-ordination service 0800 FARMING (0800 327 646). Introduce feed slowly and reduce the risk of acidosis. • Be realistic – how many stock units can you feed? Consider leasing out livestock or culling poor-performing animals. • Get silt deposited over paddocks tested and get advice on the correct fertiliser according to the soil test. • Grazing pasture coated in silt can cause animal health issues. If in doubt, seek advice from your veterinarian. • It is highly likely more cows will calve early. Keep up regular observation of cows and spot abnormal behaviour that can be a sign of metabolic disorders. • Most importantly, seek advice from your farm advisory service.

Flood-affected farmers in Mid Canterbury are being encouraged to make use of livestock feed support services funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Widespread flooding across Canterbury, West Coast, Tasman and Marlborough this winter has damaged pasture and caused losses to supplementary feed. Since June, MPI has boosted feed support services and allocated more than $4.7 million for recovery grants, technical advice and wellbeing support. MPI’s director of rural communities and farming support Nick Story said several of these regions had been battling long-term drought prior to the floods which had put further pressure on feed supplies heading into calving and lambing. “We have ramped up support for farmers, including funding recovery co-ordinators and establishing a dedicated fund to help clear flood debris from paddocks in Canterbury.” MPI funds Beef + Lamb NZ, Federated Farmers and other specialist providers to offer free, one-on-one feed planning support to livestock owners. Finch said that having a clear feed plan will be vital for many farmers to get through the next few months, identifying feed requirements to minimise animal welfare issues through a critical part of the seasonal calendar. “The service supports farmers to calculate their feed demand and supply, investigate options to fill feed gaps and proactively make decisions. In some cases, dairy farmers may have to lease out cows in order to reduce feed demand and get through the season. “The important thing is that decisions are made early. “Getting your plan down on paper can help give you peace of mind and provide clear direction.” The Feed Planning Service can help farmers do a snapshot feed plan for the rest of winter and spring in as little as 20 minutes. Beef + Lamb NZ’s South Island general manager John Ladley said that paddocks covered in silt won’t be growing any feed. “Careful planning is needed to get that land back into production and growing pasture, or a crop to fill feed gaps.

“A recovery plan for regrassing should use a mix of short-term and permanent pastures. “Using all annual pastures could result in another feed pinch next year when pastures have to be renewed again.” Farmers are encouraged to get flood-deposited silt covering paddocks tested, so the correct fertiliser can be applied. MPI’s director of animal health and welfare and veterinarian Chris Rodwell said grazing pasture coated with silt can cause animal health issues and careful management was needed. “We know that animals can develop a range of poor health conditions from silt. Farmers are facing challenging conditions and we really encourage everyone who has concerns about the health of their animals to seek advice from their veterinarian.” To get help from the feed planning service, or to list or source feed or grazing through the feed co-ordination service, farmers are encouraged to call 0800 FARMING (0800 327 646). Farmers who need wellbeing support should contact their Rural Support Trust on 0800 RURAL HELP (0800 787 254).

Concern expressed at milling wheat crop decline Heather Chalmers Efforts to make New Zealand more self-reliant in growing milling wheat used to make bread have taken a step backwards, with just-released figures showing that sowing rates are predicted to be down almost 30 per cent for next year’s harvest. Uncertainty around a new milling wheat procurement process combined with firming prices for alternative feed wheat crops have growers “voting with their feet,” Federated Farmers’ arable industry chairman Colin Hurst said. “It’s worrying that buying practices we believe may be anti-competitive, are coming at a time when growers are able to receive better prices for animal feed wheat. “This may result in New Zealand becoming more reliant on imported milling wheat for a staple food.” The federation was keen to discuss the situation with the Commerce Commission and has also approached Commerce Minister David Clark. The latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) grower survey shows sowing (and intended sowing) of milling wheat crops are down 27 per cent on last season. Instead, growers are opting to sow wheat for animal feed, with feed wheat expected to be up 14 per cent, with most of this already sown. Milling wheat has traditionally attracted a higher price as it is lower yielding and has to meet higher quality specifications for protein, screenings and falling number (weather and sprout damage), however, this premium

Procurement uncertainty and an erosion in traditional premiums has growers switching from sowing milling wheat to feed wheat this season.

has been eroded this season. Last year there were three buyers purchasing New Zealand-grown milling wheat for domestic flour mills. This year, just one agent is handling the purchase of milling wheat for two of the buying mills. Federated Farmers understands this represents up to 60 per cent of the home-grown product. Of further concern is that the agent owns one of the mills, Hurst said. “We’ve just had a draft report from the Commerce Commission that says our supermarket duopoly makes it more expensive for New Zealanders to put food on the table.

“For a staple like bread, surely we want to encourage competition throughout the supply chain and give the right signals to our wheat growers that the pains they go to in growing quality wheat for New Zealanders is valued and suitably rewarded.” Demand from dairy farmers has lifted both feed wheat and feed barley prices by about $20 a tonne since March, with Canterbury feed wheat quoted at $419/t. New Zealand already imports around 230,000 tonnes of milling wheat, mostly from Australia. Growers had lifted local production to around 110,000 tonnes, making the country

more resilient to disruption and shipping restrictions from the likes of Covid-19, Hurst said. “But growers are clearly not being incentivised to grow milling wheat and are voting with their feet by switching to other crops. “We think the government should be interested in this situation, given New Zealand’s crop and seed sector has raised gross revenue from $655 million in 2017 to $940m last year, not to mention the growing interest we’re seeing from New Zealanders in wanting to support locally grown produce.” The July AIMI report also found that unsold stocks of feed

wheat were much lower compared to the same time last year (down 36,500 tonnes) while unsold feed barley was down by 41,200 tonnes. Sowings and intentions for malting barley were down 13 per cent, feed barley up 5 per cent, milling oats up 10 per cent and feed oats down 13 per cent, although less than half of these four crops had been sown by July 1. Some autumn and winter-sown crops were affected by flooding and some of these crops will be resown. More growers than usual indicated that they will sow in spring, most likely alternative crops.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Because your pet peeves include lateness, last-minute cancellations, the untimely return of calls and texts... you make special efforts not to commit such offences yourself. It will be harder to stick with today. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’ll be wise to let people know what you can really make happen, because you don’t want anyone to have unrealistic expectations that involve you. It’s bad Karma. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): One of the best ways to build your relationship with yourself is to take on exciting challenges. You’ll be attracted to one today, and it is guaranteed to increase more than just your self-esteem. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You have a big attitude today, pulsing with promise and potential. It’s all respectfully contained. You don’t need to posture or be louder than anyone else. You’re a quiet but powerful magnet for all you desire. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Try not to hold yourself to impossibly high standards. It’s a rejection of where you’re at right now, which is as good a place as any. Change usually executes many small steps before it leaps. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It’s appropriate to channel the energy of other people before you find that groove that’s all you. It takes time, action, and mistakes to find your voice. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ve been shaped by wonderful, terrible, trying, fortunate and unusual happenings. You’ll be inspired to think of your story differently and learn to tell it to yourself and others in more empowering terms. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You’re starting to understand the role that could fit you better. One small action leads to the next, and soon you’ll be leaning and living in such a way that makes your vision an inevitability. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): React a little slower than you think you should. It will give you a chance to get what you’re reacting to, which is the underlying meaning, not the misdirection that’s going on at the surface level. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your choices are getting better aligned with the picture you hold for your future. A deadline of some sort will help you follow through with the trend. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Sometimes the action just gets stuck. It’s no one’s fault. There’s no point in wondering what happened. Just get out of the mud. Let go of something; add more throttle; or throw in a new topic for traction. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ll expand an idea in a hyperreal direction – so beyond what’s normal that it’s almost a caricature. This eliminates some of the complexity and makes it easy for people to understand and connect.

OUR VIEW

Our lesson from the Timaru tragedy P

arents aren’t meant to bury their children. But in Timaru this week that’ll be part of unimaginable grief facing families after the wasteful death of five teenage males in a single-vehicle crash on the northern outskirts of the town on Saturday night. Yes, it wasn’t in Ashburton, but we should still care and we should still take note. We have much in common with Timaru and the province of South Canterbury. We’re farming proud, we perform in many areas well above our status and we stick together when times are tough. That’s why we should feel the horrific pain that the wider Timaru community will be experiencing because everyone knows that this sort of tragedy could happen anywhere.

Daryl Holden Tragedies such as this one simply offer a glimpse of a national problem that won’t ever go away. In one instant of poor judgment and reckless behaviour, five youngsters are dead and the driver, should he survive, faces a life forever scarred, while countless loved ones are left reeling and wondering why. Sadly, they aren’t the first and they won’t be the last. But this is not a time to judge. It is an opportunity for those of us with teenagers to have a sit-down with them and a

conversation about cars and safety. Because there are few times when a parent worries more, and rightly so, than when a new teen driver slips behind the wheel.

come out of one of the worst car crashes on our roads nationally, then it could be that you’ve taken the chance to tell your teens about the accident. Tell them what happened.

two outcomes. Life or death. Often there are no grey areas. You either live to move on or you die. Unfortunately, some teenagers are notorious for their reckless behaviour mainly because their brains have not developed enough to fully understand the consequences of poor choices and how dramatically one’s life can be altered in a single moment. So that’s why it’s even more important that the adults in their lives make sure they understand, that they keep repeating the message regardless of how many: ‘yeah, I know’ eye-rolls the teen offers up. In Mid Canterbury, we must use this latest tragedy less than an hour away as a cautionary tale to avoid future ones. It might just save some lives.

am now about eight rides into my new mountain bike. The first two of those I spent 97 per cent of the time on the bike saying to myself “God, I miss my e bike”. The first few rides after a length of time off the bike are brutal enough, but add to that going from e bike to manual bike and the pain is intensified. Our annual trip to Hanmer is only a couple of months away and the thought of biking up and down the hills surrounding that town is motivating me to keep hopping on the bike and get some fitness under my beer belly-covered belt. Two days ago, the cycling gods, sensing my need for further motivation made sure I saw a message, in the form of a study. “Do cyclists live longer?”

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand attempted to answer the question with a study using 15 years of census data to examine the mortality rates of bikers versus non-bikers. Of the 3.5 million people surveyed, only 3 per cent of them cycled to work, while 5 per cent walked. But that minority fared the best: the cyclists saw a 13 per cent reduction in early death rates compared to the people who drove to work. People who walked or took public transportation to work saw no change in their expected lifespan.

A similar study conducted in England, Scotland, and Wales, found that cycling was associated with increased mortality. Another British study found that cyclists were 15 per cent less likely to die from any cause. A Danish study found that riding a bike regularly could lower your risk of heart attack by at least 11 per cent. So, the next time I feel like I’m dying halfway up Mt Ash, I will remind myself that actually quite the opposite is going on.

On a different note I was so happy to see the feedback on one of my Facebook posts this past week. With the new Business Awards nearing, I asked my facey friends where they have got GREAT service in Mid Canterbury of late.

I was stoked to see over 250 comments! I enjoyed scrolling through them and seeing the wide variety of businesses mentioned. It was really good positive stuff. Let’s face it, in this day in age with online shopping and CBD revitalisation, it’s tough out there for our bricks and mortar businesses, so it’s great to see that most businesses provide such great service. Keep up the good work! Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Cyclist Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Gold Stars on the mat Jonathan Leask

Two gold stars and a maiden title were claimed on the indoor bowling mats at the weekend. The Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association’s Centennial Shield fours title was claimed by Geoff Laird, Gaynor Hurst, Georgina Black and Helen Rennie on Saturday. It came down to the final round with three teams still in the hunt for the Shield, but the quartet of Laird, Hurst, Black, and Rennie finished on top with 8 points and 23 ends. The win gave Hurst a gold star, and Black her first title on the mats. Second place went to Graeme Chapman, Bernice Laird, Charlie Cleghorn and Ann Sunbeam on 8 points and 21 ends. Then on Sunday Gaylene Smith took out the Ladies Championship singles, after beating Joan Hardy in a tight match. To get to the final, Smith had beaten Raewyn Robin, while Hardy had edged Rowena Mackenzie on her last bowl. In the men’s section four qualified from the field of 12. Mat Bassett beat Grant Wilson in one semi-final, while Ken Mackenzie got the better of John Lewis in the other. The final was another tightly fought match, with Bassett coming out on top of Mackenzie for the title. Plains rise above Alps

Mid Canterbury Plains ended the season in style, lifting the HN Edge Cup and Russell Kelly Cup after beating Mid Canterbury Alps 27-17 in the final at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday. Earlier in the season, Plains lost their combined competition semi-final 21-25 to eventual champions

Waihora, so taking the Mid Canterbury title was a fitting finish for the side. The U16 final acted as the showpiece event in the Mid Canterbury Rugby JAB Gala Day, with all the junior grades having a final run for the season at the Showgrounds. Elsewhere, Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV were

outclassed by Timaru Boys’ 5-50 in the final round of the Secondary Schools’ Championship. Last weekend, the Mid Canterbury Alps lost the Combined U18 final against Timaru Boys’ 2nd XV, while in the Mid Canterbury U14.5 grade the Mid Canterbury Plains got the better of Methven.

Hampstead dominate finals day It was well and truly Hampstead’s day when Mid Canterbury Netball’s junior finals took to the court on Saturday. All three finals of the Ashburton New World Junior Competition featured Hampstead taking on Allenton, and in all three it was the Hampstead teams that came out on top. In the top junior grade – junior senior A – Hampstead Junior A took on Allenton A and came away with the win 41-17, while the junior senior B final saw Hampstead B taking on the Allenton Crusaders, with the blue and golds winning 29-10. The intermediate A final was won by Hampstead C, beating the Allenton Diamonds 18-5, while the last few weeks of in-

termediate B was a round robin which was taken out by Hampstead Blue. Two special trophies on offer were also taken out by Hampstead teams, with the Jan Joyce Trophy for the team with the least goals scored against them during the season being Hampstead C, and the McIntosh-Behrnes Cup for the team with the highest goal average going to Hampstead A. A big morning of junior finals at the EA Networks Centre was then followed by a big afternoon of senior finals. Mid Canterbury Netball’s senior Saturday afternoon competition features secondary school teams, and unlike the morning competition the honours were shared around three different clubs.

-Above – Hampstead Speights Ale House Junior A with the spoils of victory after beating Allenton in the Mid Canterbury Junior Senior A final on Saturday. Left – College Y9 A won the KFC Senior grade final, beating Methven Humm Engineering 30-26. The big final, the KFC Senior grade final, was a hard-fought clash between Ashburton College Year 9A and Methven, with the young College side taking it out 30-26. In the KFC Senior Reserve final, Rakaia took it out 42-22 over Methven while the Bellissimo 2nd grade final between Methven and Ashburton College U15 went the way of the Methven side 2514.

Prizegivings followed both the junior and senior finals, where presentations were also made to umpires who were allocated finals on finals day, as well as the umpires who had achieved their pre-centre, or centre umpiring badge during the season. Those who earned their centre badge were Leah Reid, Ciara Ross, Bella Casey-Solly, Anna Tuamoheloa and Hannah Digby, while those who earned

their pre-centre were Adasyin McLean, Alice Jackson, Ally Thomas, Amelia Mitchell, Bronte Brown, Charlotte Bota, Ella Bradley, Emma Ledingham, Emma Lowry, Jess Heaven, Lucy Pearce, Lulu Kilworth, Makenze Boardman, Micaela Gomez, Milla Overend, Mischka van Staden, Stacey Hooper, Sylvie Lakin, Casey Cousins, Ruby Patterson, Olivia McCambridge and Shelley Cossey.

REP RUGBY

Hammers make a steady start Jonathan Leask Mid Canterbury ran out convincing winners over Ellesmere in their first Heartland Championship warm-up match, played in Methven on Saturday. Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer said the 41-17 scoreline was favourable, but it was how the Hammers achieved it that was more of the focus. “It’s always good to get a win over Ellesmere, but the goal was to work on our systems, and if we were doing that well enough it would flow onto the scoreboard,” he said. “Once we got going we showed the attacking flair we have got, but we may have pushed things a bit too much at times, while defensively it’s about building trust so there’s a bit of fine tuning to be done. “We can see the combinations were starting to gel, and over the next few weeks we should have a good base to build on for the Heartland campaign.” The squad had a minimal buildup during the season, Palmer said, to avoid impacting on club

rugby, which made for a big week in the lead up to the first preseason fixture. They trained twice during the week and then assembled on Friday night for a mini-camp, so by kick-off on Saturday were ready to fire. Tries to Shepherd Mhembere, Iromi Dawai and Seta Koroitamana in a six-minute span saw Mid Canterbury rattle up a 17-0 lead after 15 minutes. Mhembere then crossed for his second, to give the Hammers a

handy 24-7 lead at the turn. Nick Foxley then extended the lead shortly after halftime before wing Raitube Vasurakuta scampered 50 metres to score and make it 36-7. Soon after Vasurakuta made another break, but gave the ball to Mhembere to do the finishing and notch up his hat-trick to run out to a 41-7 lead with 20 minutes to play. Any thoughts of a blowout were quickly scuppered, as Ellesmere fought back with two tries.

Shepherd Mhembere breaks the tackle to go over for one of his three tries on Saturday. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM As well as scoring three tries Mhembere also got through plenty of work, Palmer said, while in the backs Foxley impressed in an 80-minute effort after an injury-hit season, with his direct running, making plenty of tackles, and even sliding into first-five. Palmer said there would likely be some changes to the side for the second hit-out against Can-

terbury B at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday. The Hammers then open the Heartland Championship campaign against Thames Valley a week later during the Waikato Rugby Union’s 100th celebrations with the game at FMG Stadium in Hamilton. In the curtain raiser on Saturday, the Ellesmere Colts edged Mid Canterbury 33-32.

Scenes of unbridled joy and celebration broke out on the Riccarton public lawn shortly after outsider Ritani ($21) took out the 124th running of the Winning Edge Presentations Winter Cup (1600m) on Saturday. Friends, family and connections of the Kerry and Ian Taplin-trained seven-yearold Makfi mare were beside themselves as rider Kozzi Asano returned to the birdcage after Ritani had downed the well supported Taranaki raider Justaskme and fellow northerner Verry Flash to record her ninth and most important career victory. Asano produced a copybook ride as he settled Ritani in behind the steady speed set up by pacemakers Quiz Kid and So Much Mour before angling for a run closer to the rails in the home straight, as the majority of the field fanned wide. Driven to the front at the 150m, Ritani had enough in reserve to hold out all challengers by just over a length and set off the jubilant celebrations. As his wife Kerry accepted hugs and kisses from the ecstatic group of supporters, it was left to an emotional Ian Taplin to welcome back the horse to the Riccarton birdcage after the race. “It’s amazing,” he said. “Look at the people with Kerry, just wow. “We had the plan three months ago to set her for this race, so we gave her a break and brought her back for the Cup trial at Ashburton, where she ran fifth. “We then went to the Oamaru Cup where she was going to run second but just got run down on the post. “This is just amazing.” Asano was full of smiles after the win as he paid tribute to his mount. “I can’t believe I won it as it was such a tough run,” he said. “I was going to get cover three or four back, but she jumped well and was just travelling so well. “When I asked her, she just kept going and was so tough.” Ritani is out of the stakes placed Unbridled’s Song mare, Elegant Emerald who ran fourth in the 2003 Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap behind Tit For Taat. Purchased by bloodstock agent Bruce Perry for $85,000 at the 2016 Select Yearling Sale, she did her initial racing for Lib Petagna from the Stephen Marsh stable, but transferred to the Taplin stable in October, and she has now won a further five races and career prizemoney of just over $213,000.

ADDINGTON

Herbert notches up a major milestone

Jo Herbert has now racked up 200 wins.

Jo Herbert made a return to the driving ranks last season after nearly a decade away from the track and on Sunday at Addington Raceway she was able to fulfill her biggest ambition on her return – 200 driving wins. It was fitting that the milestone was brought up behind Taumata VC in the Woodlands Stud Supports Canty Breeders Mobile Pace (1980m) as the four-year-old mare was the primary reason for Herbert’s return to driving. “It is pretty special to win it on that horse,” Herbert said. “My Uncle (Doug Herbert) bred her and he is the reason why I made the comeback because he wanted me to drive her when she raced. “It has been a long process with her, but it just made it a bit more special today.” Herbert was also pleased to get the win wearing the colours of her employers,

Colin and Julie DeFilippi. A pioneer for female drivers in New Zealand, Herbert won 193 races in the cart before she was forced to step away from the game more than a decade ago to look after her son Brooklyn. “At the time it was in the too hard basket, he wasn’t that well,” Herbert said. “It got too hard, so I just focused on him.” Herbert wasn’t aware that she was so close to 200 wins when she walked away from the sport, and it became one of her major goals upon her return. “At the time when I stopped I hadn’t actually looked at that (career win tally),” Herbert said. “It was more that I had to do it (give up driving) because of my son. If I had known back then that I was that close I wouldn’t have given it up quite so soon.” But a decade on she has fulfilled her am-

bition of reaching 200 wins. “It’s been a long time coming, but I am glad to have got there,” she said.

Chloe Hanover a favourite Herbert has been fortunate to drive some quality horses over the years and she said it is hard to single out any one in particular, but highlighted the Paul Kerrtrained Chloe Hanover as one of her favourites. “I have driven some nice horses and every win has been special,” she said. “But winning 11 races on Chloe Hanover was pretty special.” Herbert said the thrill of driving in several New Zealand Cups has also been a highlight. “I have driven in the New Zealand Cup three times, my closest was fourth, but it is still pretty special to drive in that race,” she said.

BLACKLOW, Barbara Mary – On August 5, 2021. A truly special and gracious lady we had the honour to call our 'Aunty B'. A trip through Ashburton and a chance 'pop in' always ended up with a table full of baking to feed 30 when only 4, or less, of us were in attendance. Truly impressive. Sharp as a tack and knew everything that was going on in our lives. She cared how we were and that was a gift to us. She was a great cobber and sister-in-law to our Mum and Dad (Jess and Eric Flaherty (deceased). Such precious memories to keep and hold. Sincere condolences to the Blacklow extended family. The Flaherty girls and families.
