Celebrating our essential workers on the front line ...

Sacha and Link on delivery duty PANDEMIC STARS

Daryl Holden Running out of booze in lockdown? No problem. Just call Sacha and Link. That’s Sacha Fougere, who for nearly a year has owned Liquorland Racecourse Road, attached to Hotel Ashburton, with her husband Tom. And Link? Well, he’s the quiet one of the alcohol-couriering duo. By virtue of his four legs, tail and, we presume, a dislike of cats, Link doesn’t contribute much to any conversation. But the loveable rottweiler, who turns two next month, remains a big part of the Liquorland team’s contactless alcohol deliveries they’ve been providing for Ashburton customers since the country moved into Alert Level 4 status. “He has loved going for rides,’’ Fougere said of her pooch. “And customers have been so happy to see him hanging his head out the window of the car.’’ Customers have also been happy to get their drink of choice in a safe and speedy way from the first of our Covid Champions, the unsung essential workers doing their bit. Orders are taken over the phone and payments processed in the store. And then they’re off, with Link riding shotgun. “When we arrive at the delivery

Let’s call them our Covid champions. They’re Mid Canterbury’s essential workers, the unsung heroes of the pandemic. They’re hardworking Mid Cantabrians, who have been on the front line in the fight against the virus working hard to ensure lives stay as normal as possible. We want to recognise those community stars and celebrate them in our Covid Champions series. If you know of any, let us know. Email: editor@theguardian.co.nz

address, we toot the horn so they can come out,’’ Fougere said. “Once we confirm from a distance that they are the delivery recipient, we can put the order out for them, including a receipt, and then we drive off. Fully contactless, as per Government guidelines and regulations.’’ The system and innovative service has been a big success, with an increase in orders coming on Saturday. “As expected, after the exten-

sion to lockdown,’’ Fougere said. And what’s most Ashburtonians’ favourite tipple? Spirits, RTDs, plenty of gin and cocktail-making supplies top the list. And Fougere said the contactless Level 4 delivery service would be available every day except Sunday, and for good reason. “We need a rest day, too,’’ Fougere said, with big Link no doubt wagging his tail in support.

Link’s in the driver’s seat on this one.

Pothole blamed for crash Maddison Gourlay An Ashburton mum is upset that a council employee allegedly “giggled’’ about her story after being lucky to escape a serious car crash caused by a pothole. Olivia Reeves and her young son were left shaken and fortunate to avoid serious injury when she lost control of her car. She skidded off the road on to grass after being forced to swerve to avoid a huge pothole on Beach Road. They suffered minor whiplash and chest pain injuries, but mentally the incident has knocked Reeves’ confidence. “I feel nervous to drive now, let alone on that road,” Reeves said. “The potholes are all over and the council blamed me. They wouldn’t take responsibility and blamed my driving.’’ Emergency services were called to the scene and the police did not issue Reeves with a reckless driving charge, being told by an officer that it was an unpreventable accident because of the pothole. Reeves rang the Ashburton District Council to complain about the pothole, but said she got nowhere before going directly to council roading manager Brian Fauth. Reeves said she felt like screaming in frustration because she said Fauth had suggested her poor driving was the issue. “He told me the reason I crashed was because of how I drive,” Reeves said. “Then I asked him if it was alright if a mother and child almost lost their lives. He giggled.”

Council infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, said they were concerned about the serious safety risk for motorists on any district road. He also said the council response

and interaction with Reeves was “consistent with and limited to the above information provided’’. The Beach Road pothole in question had been quickly repaired after the accident.

The car Reeves was in belonged to good friend Corey Fell, who said the crash was not her fault. “The council are there to maintain and keep the roads safe for

Supermarket staff fast-tracked for vaccinations By Adam Burns

Supermarket workers in Ashburton are being fasttracked for vaccinations. A fully booked mass vaccination event and an additional clinic at Hakatere Marae are also in the pipeline for the town in the coming days. It is understood the event will be held at Hampstead Rugby Club with assistance to be provided by Civil Defence. Life Pharmacy is one of five sites providing vaccination services in Ashburton and has taken on an extra nurse to facilitate supermarket employees as a priority for the Pfizer vaccine. “We took the initiative and approached some of the local supermarkets,” pharmacy co-owner Rachel Eaton said. “We feel that’s really important that they get vaccinated and we’ve got the ability to do that.” It follows a nationwide trend of essential “custom-

er facing” workers being bumped up the vaccination queue following ongoing criticism of the Government for not prioritising these groups. Further grumbles at the government’s move around vaccinating the 12-15 age group simultaneously as parents and caregivers who have booked has also been expressed. The Methven Medical Centre, which was also providing vaccinations out west, described last week’s announcement by the Prime Minister as “short-sighted”. “This is a situation that is out of our control,” a spokesperson said on its Facebook page. Eaton said the process was still being worked through but it would not be in a position to carry out these vaccines at present. “We definitely won’t be vaccinating a child when they come with their parent like Jacinda said,” she said. “We haven’t got the capacity to do that.”

‘People are worried’ Testing centre boss urges caution as tests swell Adam Burns A record number of Covid swabs have been reported in Ashburton with local health officials again stressing caution to the community.

The Prime Minister yesterday extended current lockdown restrictions for areas outside of Auckland until Friday midnight with Auckland to remain at level 4 for at least another seven days. No confirmed cases have been reported in the South Island. Reports that locals have been at Covid hot-spots prompting moves to get tested have also begun to surface. “People are coming out be-

cause they’re worried,” Ashburton community testing centre clinical lead Dr Sarah Clarke said. “There’s quite a few people who have been at locations of interest so they’re extra worried so there’s legitimate concern.” Nearly 150 people were tested for Covid-19 in Ashburton at the weekend with a total of 86 swabs completed on Saturday – the biggest local numbers since the pandemic began.

“The testing is going as fast as it possibly can.” As was the case around the country, there were lag times between swabs taken and results in the Canterbury region. More than 2500 tests were conducted throughout the DHB’s three community testing centres between Friday and Sunday. Swabs belonging to people who had been at locations of interest were being bumped to

the top of the queue at analysis stage. “We still need to behave like there is Covid in the community.” Despite the monumental task, Clarke said there was a high sense of morale among the team on the ground. “They’re coping amazingly well,” she said. “They’re just getting in there and getting on with it.”

Ashburton Mitre 10 staff isolating Covid-19 concern has edged uncomfortably close to Mid Canterbury with Ashburton Mitre 10 and Bayleys Real Estate district staff forced into isolation. Those staff had to isolate after attending separate Auckland functions last week where a confirmed positive case was present. More than 1000 people, including media personality Hilary Barry and comedian Jeremy Corbett, are also in isolation after attending both awards ceremonies at the Spark Arena. Barry hosted the Mitre 10 awards dinner on August 12, while Corbett fronted an event for Bayleys Real Estate at the same venue the following evening. The Guardian understands as many as 10 Ashburton Mitre 10 staff or partners and five from Bayleys had to isolate. A Mitre 10 spokeswoman said she understood the community’s apprehension

at the isolation news so close to home. “Attendees were notified that they had been at a location of interest and advised of the actions they and their households needed to take regarding self-isolation and testing. “The country was at level 1 at the time of the event and appropriate protocols were in place.” Mitre 10, to its credit, alerted customers on its Facebook page on Friday night. Many Facebook comments praised the store for being upfront about the situation, but one member of the public was worried about a potential spread of the virus. “Did any of the 10, work in (the) Ashburton store once returning from the event? At least tell us.’’ Mitre 10 failed to respond to that question, which was also put to them by the Guardian yesterday on behalf of the community.

COVID-19 ALERT

All of NZ is staying at Alert Level 4 to stop Delta Thank you for doing your bit to help stamp out COVID-19. It’s still too early to know if the latest outbreak is fully contained, but we do know our best chance of beating Delta is to stop it spreading. That’s why Alert Level 4 is being extended across the country. We’re all staying at Alert Level 4 until at least 11.59pm Friday 27 August. Auckland will remain in Alert Level 4 until at least 11.59pm Tuesday 31 August. Why do we need to stay home?

Which public spaces are okay to visit?

The Delta variant is highly infectious and can spread from people simply walking past each other. We need to keep avoiding interacting with people beyond our bubble. Any movement should only be to exercise or access necessities like groceries and medical care, including testing and vaccinations.

You can visit places to access necessities like groceries and medicine. Playgrounds are closed. Places where people may linger or struggle to maintain a 2-metre distance should be avoided.

When do I have to wear a face covering? It’s recommended you wear a face covering whenever you leave home. This includes when exercising if it is difficult to stay at least 2 metres away from others. If you’re aged 12 or over, you must wear a face covering when: • Accessing necessities at places like supermarkets, pharmacies and petrol stations • On public transport, flights, and at arrival and departure points, for example train stations and bus stops • In taxi or ride-share vehicles (both drivers and passengers). Remember to respect those who can’t wear a face covering due to a health condition.

Is it okay to exercise? Unless you’re isolating, you can go for a walk, run or bike ride. Just remember to: • Stay close to home and go no further than your immediate neighbourhood • Only exercise alone or with people in your bubble • Keep at least 2 metres away from others • Avoid any exercise that could require emergency services if you got in trouble. Do your bit and wait until after lockdown to go surfing, tramping, boating or hiking.

What type of shopping can I do? You can only shop for necessities like food or medicine. Remember: • Only one person from your household should go shopping • Wear a face covering • The Delta variant is highly infectious. Stay at least 2 metres away from others to slow the spread • If you can’t go shopping, consider delivery or having friends, family or neighbours drop supplies off at your door.

Why do I have to keep checking locations of interest? Locations of interest are updated regularly, so keep checking back to make sure you have the latest information. If you were at a location of interest at the time listed, isolate and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 immediately about getting a test. Members of your household must also isolate immediately. No one can leave the house for exercise or necessities until you receive a negative test.

Where can I seek help if I’m feeling overwhelmed? We know that staying in your bubble can be hard for some people. If you feel you need help, it is available to you. For support with grief, anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can also call or text the ‘Need to talk?’ service on 1737. This is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It gives you the chance to talk with a trained counsellor.

Let’s all keep working together to stop Delta Find out more at Covid19.govt.nz 19

CBD works on home straight Jonathan Leask The $15 million Ashburton CBD revitalisation project is 80 per cent complete and was on target for completion in November, until works came to a halt under Alert Level 4 restrictions. The major upgrade work is currently focused at the East Street and Moore Street intersection which had been scheduled to reopen on Monday afternoon, prior to the Level 4 lockdown. The northbound/west side lane is paved and open to traffic while the southbound lane was scheduled to be completed last week, with new traffic signals to be installed and prepared for commissioning in time to reopen on Monday, but will now hinge on the lockdown delays and when the contractors can get back on site in Alert Level 3. An Ashburton District Council spokesman said a revised schedule would be available by the end of the week, “if we are able to resume work at a lower alert level”. Along East Street, the new road resurface dig out and preparation work has started in the northbound lane between Havelock Street and Burnett Street. resurfacing work will aim to be completed in early November. Future-proofing cable ducting is to be installed, the existing water meter boxes will be replaced and stormwater downpipes will be connected to new underground sub-main pipes in the footpath before the new

footpath surface is laid. The grassing and finishing off of the East Street green belt area will be undertaken during September and October when the weather is warmer. Works along Burnett Street had been expected to wrap up last week.

Inspiring the next generation Maddison Gourlay A Methven primary school teacher is paving the way for environmental education at her school. Erica George is in her second year of teaching and hopes there will eventually be more environmental education in schools around New Zealand. During the recent school holidays, George attended the Blake Inspire Programme for teachers. The five days in the middle of July helped her gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues and how to apply environmental education across all subjects. A highlight of her trip was meeting Animal Planet Buggin’ with Ruud host, Ruud Kleinpaste, otherwise known as the bugman. “Being out in nature has always been really important to me, like hiking and biking and I am probably happiest when I am out on a hike in the bush,” George said. “Environmental education is something I am really into. “To be in nature and being outdoors and it is something I would like to learn more about, to be able to teach pupils to be more connected to our environment.” George is excited the whole school will be focusing more on the environment for the rest of

Maronan crash

Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash on Barford Road in Maronan around 10am yesterday. One vehicle rolled during the incident, an ambulance from Mayfield was sent out to the scene which was later stood down by police as it was not required, St John spokeman Gerard Campbell said. No-one involved in the crash was injured.

Mayfield toilet Public toilets at the Mayfield Domain have been closed. A leak at the facility prompted the Ashburton District Council to shut the site yesterday. Council said other public toilets along main travel routes remained open to frontline essential workers. Public facilities at the Ashburton Domain, Hinds, Methven Town Centre and Rakaia remained open to essential workers. All other public toilets had been closed for the remainder of lockdown.

to see them so excited, and it can be so hands-on, we have so much in our school environment to teach them. “At the age of new entrants, it’s about getting them excited and curious, and the rest will follow.”

The Ashburton District Council has decided to delay applying penalties for late rates because of the country’s move to Alert Level 4. The first rates instalment for the 2021/22 year was due on 20 August with a 10 per cent penalty applied if payment is not made by that date. Councillors voted to delay applying the penalty for late payment of the first instalment until five consecutive days after a reduction to Level 2 or less. They also decided to delay applying the 31 August arrears penalty because of the same circumstances until five consecutive days after a reduction to Level 2 or less.

Will Variety Theatre’s show go on? Matt Markham They say the show must go on, and that’s exactly what Variety Theatre Ashburton is hoping will happen. Yesterday’s 4pm announcement wasn’t the news that organisers of this year’s show, Jesus Christ Superstar were hoping for, but there’s a steely determination to not give up hope just yet. A decision has been made to wait until Friday’s announcement by Government before making the ultimate decision as to what happens next for the popular stage show. But what’s required is a clear pathway forward to Alert Level 1 so a set in stone concrete plan can be formed to get on stage at a later date than next week’s original opening date. Director, Roger Farr said there was a strong desire to see the show go ahead, but also admitted that every day that went by was lessening the chances of it happening. “It’s not an ideal decision we find ourselves in, far from it in fact,” Farr said. “But we’ve got to give it every possible chance we can and that’s why we’ve decided to wait until Friday to make a final decision.” Just how the show would look

Organisers of Jesus Christ Superstar will make a decision on the show’s fate after Friday’s Government announcement. PHOTO SUPPLIED and when it would run were details that were still being worked through, but Farr and his team were working through all options. With a cast and crew of more than 60 people, Farr said there would be a lot of disappointed people around who had put

a heap of work into getting the show ready for opening night – but all would be taking solace in the fact that there’s still a chance there to get on stage. “A lot of time and energy has gone into just getting to this point, but there is still some hard

work to be done. “If we don’t get the news we want on Friday then we’ll have to sit down and talk about our options for bringing the show back next year, but we’ll get to Friday and hope for the best.” Things still look positive for the

Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre’s production of The Little Mermaid in early October. MCCT’s Nicola Walker said no discussions or decisions were being made until information was a little clearer as to how long restrictions would be in place. “We’re playing the wait and see game, we’ve got a bit more time up our sleeve which is great – but we’re encouraging rehearsal from home for everyone involved,” she said. Meanwhile, up in Methven, organisers of this year’s pantomime, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, will meet tonight to discuss their options going forward ,with a rescheduled show high on the list of priorities. The curtain was set to open on their season on Thursday, September 9 for three nights. “Performing our show is not financially viable until we are back down to Alert Level 1,” Methven Theatre Company chairperson, Tammy Dickson, said. “Due to the uncertainty around what’s happening there is a high possibility that we will have to reschedule our show.” The company is working hard to ensure that the show will be able to be held in 2021, however it will be subject to the availability of the cast and crew and also the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall where the show is set to begin. Ticket holders for both events will be informed of next steps going forward in the coming days.

OUR VIEW

We’re going potty over road woes

T

alk about a “hole’’ lot of trouble. I’m referring to the state of numerous roads in Mid Canterbury, especially in rural areas, where too many are riddled with potholes of all shapes and sizes. And we know it’s an issue that’s grating away at many of you because we hear it all the time. We’ve had numerous members of the public complain to us on Facebook, by email, phone and in person about potholed roads. One fellow described a particular pothole near his place as being “big enough to swallow a Mini’’. Let’s hope he was exaggerating, but maybe he wasn’t. Another, clearly frustrated, took the time to count potholes on a nearby road. And his count reached 41.

Daryl Holden Even if maths was not his speciality, whatever the final tally was it was still R for ridiculous. So something needs to be done about them. Ashburton’s Olivia Reeves would agree with that. She’s our front cover story today and it’s some story. Reeves and her young son were left shaken and fortunate to avoid serious injury when she lost control of her car. She skidded off the road on to grass after being forced to swerve to avoid an enormous pothole on Beach Road.

She rightly complained to the Ashburton District Council but, really, didn’t get too far, though the council team to their credit quickly fixed the pothole not long after the accident. But why are there so many potholes? Clearly the biblical-like rainfall that lashed the district in May and June has played a big part.

into existing small cracks in the road surface and is caused by the wear and tear of traffic and deterioration over time. Cold weather then causes the water to freeze and expand, and when the water melts and evaporates in warmer weather it creates gaps, which then get broken down by traffic. And in Ashburton, traffic

why are there so many potholes? “ But Clearly the biblical-like rainfall that lashed the district in May and June has played a big part.

Because potholes – and stick with me as I run through a quick science lesson – are caused by water, which seeps

is mostly big trucks and farm machinery. They rumble over many already compromised roads,

leaving potholes for Africa. Or potholes for Ashburton, as the case may be. So, who’s to blame? Well, we can’t go pointing the finger solely at the Ashburton District Council. Road maintenance is already one of their main multimillion-dollar focuses and budget spends. Now, with the floods and further deterioration, it’s become an even bigger job, requiring even more funding. The council roading team do want to hear from the public about potholes needing repaired. So keep letting them know. Keep being on their pothole case. Because without speaking up, and without making your point, the problem will indeed get a “hole’’ lot bigger. And we can’t have that.

Lift your lockdown mood F

eeling forgetful, confused and a bit cranky? Yeah, me too and I’m going to work each day. Lockdowns upset routines and people’s mental health, so I’ve done some research and gathered some tips to get you through. Try these . . .

Force yourself to move Exercise is very important for your mood as well as your thinking. Even though you may have zero motivation, do it. It burns up the stress hormone, cortisol. Anything is better than nothing. When they say ‘anything’, I’m not sure they mean dumbbell curls with craft beer, but I’m counting it!

Have a chat – however you

can Sick of Zoom calls? We all are. But if you allow yourself to become too isolated, any cognitive issues may become worse. Conversation with those in your household, and video chats both help keep the memory and attention span focused. In our household we have no choice when it comes to conversing as Maddy is averaging 47,000 questions per day at the moment. The most popular of these being, “do you want to play Go

Fish or Dominoes”? I think she is going to be a salesperson of some description. She doesn’t take no for an answer. “Dad, do you want to play Dominoes?, say yes dad, say YES”.

If every day feels the same – make them different A regular schedule is valuable. But to avoid blurring days, introducing small differences, like changing your walking route daily or a phone call with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while can help break up that repetitive cycle.

or the many in Mid Canterbury and all around New Zealand that might not be able to work because of the lockdown, people are now getting creative. For jobs around home where the weekend never felt long enough, now there is one thing many of us did during the last lockdown, sort out stuff you don’t use anymore. Now, since moving back to Ashburton, I live with my parents again and one key thing to note with my dad (right) is he does not throw anything out. EVER. My dad, who recently became a member of the 50s club, last year only got around to throwing out the shirt he wore on the night of his 21st party. And by throw out, I mean use for rags in

Maddison Gourlay the garage. So when my dad pulled out past cellphones from the drawer, nostalgia hit. Now, when I mean past cellphones, I mean old. No sim card old. And you would never guess what he did with these phones once he showed them to me in a fit of laughs, he just put them in another drawer. Possibly preparing for the next lockdown. Oh my, let’s hope not.

watching a beloved movie may be helpful, instead of dwelling on the things you CAN’T do.

Remember, this, too, will end Stresses feel worse when they feel like they’re forever. That’s not the case with this. While we don’t know when the lockdown, whatever level, end date is – it’s not going to be forever.

And now for something completely different I’m really enjoying my new feature on the radio. What’s on my playlist. Local personalities pick their five go-to favourite songs and I play them at 7.20am Monday to Friday. The personalities have found it

a tough exercise and it’s been an interesting and surprising insight into people’s different tastes. This week, Guardian sportswriter Matt Markham is in the spotlight. “Mate, you won’t get another list like this . . . haha. These are honestly the five most played songs on my Spotify!” Let’s hope he’s right and I don’t get another list like it. Back into lockdown By David Clark

his latest Covid-19 community outbreak has the potential to be a drawn-out process as we battle the spread of the Delta variant of the virus. Federated Farmers’ provincial presidents and the national executive are meeting three times a week to discuss Covid-19 issues facing our rural communities. It is in this forum that we can escalate issues encountered at a farm level to the heads of the relevant ministries and feed information back down the tree to grass roots level on farm. So far, the key messages are, firstly we have been here before and we got through this with minor interruption to farm systems and minimal health impacts in farm families and teams and there is no reason why we can’t achieve that again. The second key message and of vital importance is that this is potentially a very serious health risk to yourself, your family and your team members and their families. We must not jeopardise that. Yes, our farms and our livestock are important, but not as important as your health. If, and I say if, hoping that it does not become the case, Covid-19 reached into our farming communities, the impact on the operation of the farm could be severe with people being required to isolate, or be taken into MIQ as a result of a contact trace or a positive test. All of that could happen very quickly.

Now is the time to give some thought to how you can structure your farm system to keep people separate, or how you could deploy staff, (if you have staff ) or family members to different parts of the farm to achieve separation. Now is also the time to talk with neighbours to have a group plan if a farm needed intervention from the community. We also need to remember that the agricultural sector has been granted wide-ranging exemptions to allow us to operate our farms in a near-to-normal manner, and rightfully so, however, we must see this as a privilege, not a right. We must demonstrate that we are taking this seriously and treat the exemptions with respect, we don’t want to risk the health of those we are responsible for or have the line moved back. Lastly, spring is a very pressured time on farms, we all work very hard, long hours and this has been a sod of a winter for most of us. People are tired, mentally and physically and a lockdown will not help. Please watch out for your staff, friends and neighbours. Phone them, socially distance the yarn over the boundary fence, reach out to them in any way you can. Together we will see the other side of this. Take care.

Wool bid to reclaim carpet market Heather Chalmers Strong wool growers are seeking to reclaim a sizeable chunk of the domestic carpet market back from synthetics in a bid to lift farmer returns out of the doldrums. The woolgrower co-operative behind the move says that farmgate returns of $5 a kilogram are achievable in the medium term if it can recapture a 50 per cent market share for wool carpet. In contrast to the past, woolgrowers are also bypassing the middlemen to retain ownership of the product during manufacturing, right to the retail door, making it the first grower-owned New Zealand carpet brand. The move comes as two strong wool co-operatives, Wools of New Zealand and Primary Wool Co-operative, seek a farmer vote to merge, consolidating about 30 per cent of strong wool supply.

24 years, plastic has “ Intaken the market from

wool. We have lost the battle in the marketplace with consumers.

WNZ chief executive John McWhirter told a roadshow meeting in Darfield to discuss the vote and carpet strategy, that both strong wool volumes and demand was declining. “There is no linkage between supply and demand because production of sheep is for meat, not wool. So even though there is no demand for wool it is still coming.” There were 10,000 sheep farmers but only 10 buyer-exporters of wool, leading to the auction process being tilted in favour of the buyer. Of the total strong wool clip of 736,530 bales, the market was oversupplied by 44,713 bales, or six per cent, each year. “As buyers know there are 45,000 surplus bales it means they don’t have to for-

Wools of NZ chief executive John McWhirter. ward contract, they can sit back and relax and buy when they want to,” McWhirter said. At present 16,000 bales were used in the domestic carpet market, with another 25,000 bales exported for carpet production. In 1996, synthetics held less than 10 per cent of market share for soft floor coverings in New Zealand, which was dominated by wool. In contrast, by 2020, 85 per

cent of soft floor coverings were synthetic, with only 15 per cent made from wool. “In 24 years, plastic has taken the market from wool. We have let it happen. We have lost the battle in the marketplace with consumers.” If wool recaptured a 50 per cent market share domestically, this would use 55,000 bales, sufficient to create more supply and demand tension in the market. WNZ’s new branded carpet range was

produced by Turkish large-scale spinner and carpet manufacturer Zenova and priced so it was in the volume market and competitive with synthetic alternatives. Nine ranges of wool carpet have been launched, named after New Zealand farms such as Mt Peel and Wairere, with five colours in each. Sales have been going well since the carpet was launched in July at Flooring Xtra’s 61 stores, as well as 40 independent flooring retailers. WNZ had also started working with Fletcher Building to supply wool carpets for its housing developments at a price competitive with synthetics. Despite a lot of funding and work by research organisations, no-one had come up with a new volume use for strong wool that had made a significant difference, McWhirter said. “Coming up with new products and uses is not easy.” Instead, the co-operative had decided to stick with known products, such as a woollen version of a commercial tile. As all commercial tiles globally were synthetic, WNZ had developed a woollen version which would soon go to market. In the United Kingdom alone, the commercial flooring market was worth £240 million. The New Zealand carpet market represented only 5 per cent of global sales, compared with the UK at 35 per cent and North America at 60 per cent. “If we went to the world, we would run out of wool very quickly.” This comes amid growing consumer awareness of the natural and sustainable qualities of wool. Crossbred fleece is currently worth about $3/kg. While this has recovered from a low of less than $2/kg in 2020-21, it is still insufficient to cover the cost of shearing on many farms, with farmers relying on meat production to make a profit.

Mayfield woman awarded scholarship Mayfield’s Olivia Mackenzie has won the annual Mid Canterbury Provincial Rural Women scholarship. Mackenzie is in her second year studying at Lincoln University, working towards a Bachelor of Agri-Business and Food Marketing degree. She said she’s so happy at receiving the $1000 scholarship which will go towards the purchase of text books, technology for her laptop, and household expenses. “It’s wonderful to get help from Rural Women,” she said. “I made an application for the scholarship because it’s important to see young women in the

agri sector.” Mackenzie worked on her parents’ sheep and beef farm and her neighbour’s dairy farm near Mayfield while growing up and, while at Craighead Diocesan School in Timaru, was a member of the Teen Ag Committee. When she finishes her degree at the end of next year, she wants to stay in New Zealand and apply her knowledge back in Mid Canterbury. “I want to work with people and be a farm advisor, testing paddocks for the need for fertiliser,” she said. Mackenzie was presented with her scholarship at the recent Mid Canterbury Rural Women’s AGM.

Future-focused dairy farmers encouraged to stand for board Dairy farmers with a strong interest in supporting the sector’s success are encouraged to apply for a position on DairyNZ’s board. Nominations are now open for one farmer to join the board. DairyNZ chair Jim van der Poel said the past year has presented its own set of challenges for farmers and the sector, including workforce shortages, regulatory change and extreme weather events. “Our farmers are currently the most sustainable milk producers in the world and have made significant progress to prepare for the future, but farmers are operating in a challenging climate,” he said.

The DairyNZ team are dedicated to helping farmers face upcoming challenges and continue improving their businesses to prosper.

“DairyNZ is in a unique position to support dairy farmers with leading research and science, and to advocate on behalf of farmers to influence future policy changes.”

The DairyNZ board oversees DairyNZ’s strategy, which guides future investments into a range of programmes, including industry research and development; sustainable farming; promoting careers in dairy; advocating for farmers and monitoring the strategy’s delivery. “The DairyNZ team are dedicated to helping farmers face upcoming challenges and continue improving their businesses to prosper. “Our board plays a key part in this, and we encourage farmers who are future-focused, have an interest in governance and supporting the sector’s success to consider joining the DairyNZ board,” van der Poel said. Appointments to DairyNZ’s Board of Directors apply for three years, with directors retiring by rotation. This year, director Jacqueline Rowarth is retiring by rotation. DairyNZ is also inviting applications from farmers for one position on the Directors’ Remuneration Committee, which independently sets the directors’ fees. Both the board and the directors’ remuneration roles are open to current levy paying dairy farmers. Two current levy payers must nominate each candidate. Nominations must be received by the Returning Officer by 12 noon on September 3.

Is this a road we want to wander? Matt Markham

T

What’s in a name The All Whites could be no more. New Zealand Football are contemplating dropping the All Whites moniker for the men’s national team. The potential change is part of a wider process NZF is going through to ensure they are up to the mark when it comes to cultural inclusivity. It comes on the back of the heightened worldwide awareness around racism and racial inequality, and the name’s potentially racist connotations, and RNZ understands the national body began gauging feedback on the potential change more than six months ago. NZF chief executive Andrew Pragnell declined an interview, with the organisation instead issuing a short statement. “As with many other national bodies, New Zealand Football is on a journey around cultural inclusivity and respecting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. “It is too early in the process to speak about any outcomes, but this is an important piece of work as we strive to be the most inclusive sport in Aotearoa.”

Whatever happens, the history of the name means the potential change is likely to be polarising with New Zealand football fans, along with past and current players. The All Whites name came about during the team’s qualifying run ahead of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The team had predominantly worn white shirts and socks with black shorts, but after coming onto the pitch or their third qualifying match away to Taiwan in a full white playing kit, the moniker was coined and swiftly adopted. That 1982 team, of course, famously went on to earn New Zealand a place at the football World Cup for the first time. Several major sports teams have changed their name in recent years due to their potentially racial connotations, most notably in the US. American Football franchise Washington dropped the Redskins moniker, while the Major League Baseball side from Cleveland was no longer known as the Indians – both changes made because of the names’ ties to

SQUASH

Native American culture. In New Zealand, the Crusaders rugby team didn’t change their name, but did change their logo in 2019 after questions were raised about the appropriateness of the name due to its reference to the religious wars between the Muslims and Christians in the Middle Ages.

Name change What do you think of the

decision to contemplate a potential change of moniker for the national men’s football side? And does the discussion stop there, should we be looking at all our national sporting teams’ nicknames? Email – matt.m@theguardian. co.nz or join the discussion on the Ashburton Guardian Facebook page.

here’s a storm coming, and it’s far from being black and white. In the wake of the debacle that was the argument of the validity of the name Crusaders for the Canterbury-based sporting franchise, there was always the threat of further discussions around some of our national sporting teams and the monikers that they carry. Think All Blacks, All Whites, Black Jacks, Black Sox – the list goes on. Then yesterday, New Zealand Football announces it’s contemplating a change to the All Whites nickname given to their side back in the 80s in an effort to remain culturally inclusive. But it’s not just this decision that will have collective toes curling across the country. Should NZF make that decision, then the pressure mounts on other sporting codes around the country to consider the same. And thus, the perennial storm begins. New Zealand’s sporting teams have been gifted names that reflect the New Zealand sporting code. Our sides, often adorned in black or white uniforms, have carried their monikers based solely on their uniform – and not that of race. The All Whites were first coined as such when they qualified for the Football World Cup in 1982, when they wore all white kit for the first time in a match against Taiwan. In a statement yesterday NZF said they were on a journey around cultural inclusivity and respecting the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi. That’s great. Look closely at how you align yourself with those values, but surely a name – born from something completely innocuous – isn’t a great place to start. Perhaps guidance on how names came about in the first place, celebrating those innovations and ideas that led to the All Blacks being named as such as the All Whites being dubbed as they are, would be a better step forward. There’s a deep and dark hole sitting there and if we walk ourselves into it, it’s going to take a long time for us to come out.

Coll makes history in Hull Paul Coll has become the first New Zealand man to win the prestigious British Open squash title. The 29-year-old from Greymouth has beaten world champion Ali Farag (Egypt) 6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 in the final in Hull. It is only the second time Coll has beaten Farag in 15 meetings, to claim the biggest win of his career. “It’s been a long journey for myself. Coming right from juniors, I had to leave home at a young age. “This moment right here makes it all worth it,” Coll said after the final. “To have my coach in the crowd, one of my really good friends, Lee, in the crowd, just makes it extra special to be able to do that. “My parents were supposed to be here, but due to Covid they can’t travel, so just super proud of this moment. “I just want to thank everyone from New Zealand and everyone who’s helped me over my career

to get to this stage. There’s too many people to single out, but thank you all. I love you all. “Thank you to the whole of New Zealand for getting up at 2am and watching. “Thank you so much, everyone in the crowd who was here and came out to support, I just want to thank you all for everything that you’ve done for me.” There is potential for Paul Coll to improve in the world rankings from his current fourth place to third when the new rankings come out at the beginning of next month. Ross Norman is the only other New Zealander to play in the men’s British Open final. Norman lost the 1986 title match to 10-time champion Jahangir Khan. Dame Susan Devoy and Leilani Joyce are both multiple winners of the women’s title. Dame Susan won the tournament eight times from 19841990 and 1992, while Joyce prevailed in 1999 and 2000.

With the final stages of the Mid Canterbury Netball season sitting in limbo until Alert Levels are under control, Matt Markham takes the chance to look back at the season that’s been and name his starting line-up of the season. No parameters, just observations of some excellent netball players over a strong season of local netball. Most surprising to him though, was the inclusion of three players from United, who missed out on a playoffs berth. Fierce and unafraid to get right into the thick of the action and throw herself around the court, she’s made a mockery of more than just a few attacking sides this season. Her ability to get herself in between the player and the ball has really stood out, with plenty of tipped passes or intercepts that have changed the complete flow of the match and stopped rival sides from gaining an advantage over her team. Playing with a lot of passion, Molly’s the sort of player you’d want standing beside you when the whistle goes for a big match.

Abi Lunn

Goal Keep – Abi Lunn (United)

There’s a real energy about the court when Abi Lunn is present. She commands respect from those around her, be they friend or foe, and there’s a real intent there to just be an absolute pest to those who try and get past her. Calling on her experience, she’s been excellent all season once again, and while it might not have been United’s year on the court – Abi’s been a shining light for the side and never once shown an inkling toward giving up during a match, irrelevant of the score.

Goal Defence – Molly Stapleton (Celtic)

A standout for Celtic this season, Molly’s a star on the rise.

Wing Defence – Marnie Edwards (Southern)

Perhaps the surprise package of this team, Marnie has impressed all season in a determined Southern side. She’s worked well down the midcourt and her distribution game, as well as heavy workload on defence, has been of a standout nature. Her work rate has really stood out, and she’s grown throughout the season. Southern have made huge inroads in 2021 and Marnie has been a big part of that. She’s been touted for better things in the future locally, and no-one would be surprised to see that happen in 2022 if the form keeps up.

Wing Attack – Loumaile Manumua (United)

Often one of the more under-

Centre – Jemma Stoddart (Hampstead)

Louimaile Manumua valued roles on the netball court, wing attack requires someone fearless, someone smart-thinking and someone athletic. It’s a pivotal wheel in the cog of transitioning from end of the court to the other, and no-one does it better than Loumaile. Capable of switching from the middle of the court to the shooting circle, she’s got the all-round game, and you’ll see her flying about the court and putting her body on the line every chance she can get. But there’s immense skill there too. A gifted netball player, she’d be a welcome addition to any side.

Cool, calm and collected with a strong mixture of experience, Jemma’s had another great season on the court. She’s led from the front for Hampstead, and set the tone in many of their matches, delivering good crisp and clean ball through the court. But it’s perhaps her netball mind that stands Jemma out. She’s a quick thinker, with a real knack for reading a game well, and almost predicting what’s going to unfold in front of her. That kind of experience and skill is incredibly valuable and there’s really no better person to handle the task of the C bib.

Goal Attack – Sammy Holden (United)

Good netball players are a dime a dozen, but really good ones can often be hard to find. Sammy Holden is a really good netball player though. Sure, she’s been a part of a United side that’s had its battles, but the influence she’s had on a match when she’s been on the court has been remarkable all season. One of those players who can pull something magical out of a hat and change the whole course of a match, she’s shown she’s capable in the attacking end and equally as strong at the defensive end. She’s grabbed this bib though, and the pros-

pect of her and Alice Eddington working in close proximity to each other would be something quite special to watch.

Goal Shoot – Alice Eddington (Hampstead)

Could there be anyone else? Yes, Mid Canterbury is blessed with some incredible shooters – but Alice stands head and shoulders above them all, literally. With a goal conversion rate that elite players would be proud of, she’s an incredible force to have in any side, and isn’t afraid to step up from long range and drop one through the net. But equally, her work away from the ball is just as impressive. If there’s space to be found she’ll find it, and with quick distribution in front of her, she’s always going to be a threat to defenders.

Sophie’s set to do it for Roly Matt Markham

Matt Markham The results might not have always fallen the way they’d hoped, but there were plenty of positives from Mid Canterbury’s representative netball season. Last weekend’s South Island Teams’ Championship brought the curtain down on a short, but action-packed campaign for the green and golds, which saw them finish fourth overall in their first appearance at the tournament, and finish second at the Hanan Shield tournament in Waimate at the start of the month. A familiar pool-deck face will be missing in action at the Tokyo Paralympics, which officially begin today. Champion swimmer Sophie Pascoe will be without the support and guidance of her long-time coach and friend, Roly Crichton, who has remained in New Zealand due to unforeseen medical reasons. Crichton, who was formerly based in Ashburton, and did a lot of coaching out of the old community swimming pool at Ashburton College, has been coaching Pascoe for 20 years, first working with the multiple gold medal-winning swimmer from the age of eight. Pascoe shared a post acknowledging that her coach of 20 years wouldn’t be there with her in Tokyo earlier this month. “As I share this sad news of not having my coach, friend and biggest supporter with me on the pool deck, achieving our goals together, I know the work we have produced over the past few months, and 20 years we have been working as a team, will pay off in the next few weeks when I take to the blocks in Tokyo,” she said. But despite not having one of her regular support crew there, Pascoe was determined to continue to achieve amazing results in the water. “I would like to thank Roly for pushing me past my limits to be a successful athlete and to also wish him a speedy recovery. “I’ll be sure to make Roly, the rest of my team and supporters proud.” At the age of 15, Pascoe became the youngest medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics – winning three gold medals and a silver. Thirteen years later she’s now claimed a total of nine gold medals and six silver medals, and is New Zealand’s most successful Paralympian. It’s a record that’s in line to be extended in Tokyo. She begins her campaign in the pool on Thursday, and will compete in five events across the course of the Paralympics. Thursday: Increasing high cloud. Northerlies. MAX
