Mega relief for Ashburton Daryl Holden

Relief – for them and the community. That was sure to be the feeling for the Ashburton Mitre 10 Mega party now released from self-isolation after second Covid tests all came back negative. The group, believed to be 10-strong, had been forced into self-isolation for 14 days after attending a national Mitre 10 awards function in Auckland where a confirmed positive case was present. The good Covid test news was publicly notified via the store’s Facebook page and just ahead of their click and collect shopping offer from tomorrow. “Bring on level 3!,’’ the post said. “We look forward to level 3 from this Wednesday where we will be offering click and collect shopping. “We are also pleased to let you know all of our team members, who attended the awards event in Auckland recently, have all had their results back from their final

test and they are all negative.’’ The post drew immediate and numerous likes and love heart emjois, with one simple comment from a Heidi Burgess, from Methven, probably summing it up best. “Yay ,’’ her post said.

The Ashburton Mitre 10 group were among a crowd of about 1000, including media personality Hilary Barry as the event host, who attended the company’s national awards dinner at Spark Arena in Auckland on August 12.

Bayleys Real Estate Mid Canterbury office were also believed to be connected to a confirmed case in their national event in Auckland at the same venue as the Mitre 10 function, but on the following evening.

The Guardian was told five attendees from Bayleys Mid Canterbury, though not all staff, attended the function and had to self-isolate. The status of those five was yet to be confirmed.

Food parcel demand for families in need Malcolm Hopwood Demand for Salvation Army food parcels in Ashburton has been

three times greater over Covid-19 lockdown. The Salvation Army normally receives about 10 calls weekly from people asking for help but last week it had provided 30 food parcels to individuals and families. With each inquiry, corps officers, Elizabeth and Semi Ratu,

talk to the callers, do an assessment, book a time for them to call at the food bank and fill their boot. “Because of Covid-19 conditions, they stay in their car, and we roll out a trolley and load their boot,” Elizabeth Ratu said. She said the system was easier for those with social anxiety over

lockdown who could stay in their car. Others required food parcels to top up their household spend because of a lack of income, while some parents struggled with children at home who normally received a free school lunch. “They call us because they’re in need and are very appreciative when we can help,” she said.

The food bank gets its provisions from supermarkets, especially Countdown, and every week people drop off food or money to buy it. Last week, the Salvation Army also received winter vegetables from Grace Vineyard Church, which was enough to help fill the 30 food parcels.

The return of the takeaway Everything from coffee to full meals Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton district food outlets are prepared and relieved financially to offer takeaway services when the South Island moves to Alert Level 3 tomorrow. Nikki and Mark Milmine, who own The Somerset Grocer and Millhouse Kitchen, have moved their food cabinet into place so customers could be served from the Somerset alleyway. Coffee, cold drinks and cabinet food would be available from the Grocer from 8am to 3pm tomorrow. They’re also offering two dinner choices that could be ordered, picked up or delivered between 2pm and 3pm. For males on Father’s Day, who fear they can’t be wined and dined, The Somerset Grocer is offering a brunch platter that could be ordered, picked up or delivered on Sunday. “The lockdown is the second time around for us, so we are well prepared,’’ they said. Millhouse Kitchen would open from 9am to 2.30pm tomorrow. Patrons could come to the café entrance for coffee or order food from the cabinet or shortened menu. They could also pre-order from their online menu. KFC owner, Brad Haskett, was offering a drive-through only service from 10am to 10pm tomorrow. Patrons must have their eftpos card ready to pay for the food, which would be placed on a table below the window where staff work from. Haskett said there would be a limited choice of food and refreshments, but he was hoping to open the restaurant when they returned to Level 2. The South

‘Meating’ lockdown demand Jonathan Leask Initial lockdown rule uncertainty now behind them, Netherby Meats have enjoyed serving their customers, albeit in a limited capacity. Netherby Meats’ owner Mike Hanson said their click and collect service at Alert Level 4 had attracted a number of new customers, which he hoped would result in a renaissance of people utilising their local butcher once things returned to normal. He and his team were looking forward to moving back to level 3 tomorrow to get the butchery back into full swing, servicing local hospitality outlets, as well as continuing to cater to customers. He was also pleased the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) had made contact to give them the all-clear to operate the click and collect, and delivery services, at level 4. That was a change from New Zealand’s first Covid Alert Level 4 lockdown rules last year, which meant butchers, bakers and greengrocers could not open as the small retailers were considered non-essential. Eventually an amendment to that ruling allowed those operators that already had online click

and collect or delivery services to operate. “We’ve been busy, as it takes a bit of time sorting delivery orders, doing the bits and pieces and delivering,” said Hanson,

whose business also stayed open late into the night before the country went into a snap national lockdown at midnight on August 17. He said there had been an in-

crease in customers using the click and collect service, but it did not equate to an increase in business. “All the ones we supply – the fish and chip shops, restaurants

and cafes, and dairies who can’t sell hot food – all that stopped for us, so that’s 50 per cent of the business straight away. “It’s really good to be doing it, of course, but it’s harder to do.”

Ashburton resort owners are ‘on their own’ Malcolm Hopwood Anna and Rob Aitken are “hunkering down and staying frugal”. The Ashburton couple, who own the Daydreamer Escape resort in the Cook Islands, said their last guests would leave Rarotonga today and then they’d be “on their own again.” “The island had quietly emptied out, leaving a few tourists to complete their scheduled holiday before returning to New

Zealand,” they said. “There are a handful lucky enough to work from here and they’ve chosen to remain, as opposed to returning to lockdown in New Zealand.” The Cooks were at Alert Level 2, which allowed them to move about, but wear masks on public transport, sign in with a tracer app and attend group activities of less than 100 people. The Cook Islands Government has announced a wage subsidy and the Aitkens will receive a monthly minimum wage to assist with retaining their staff and paying power, phone and other utility costs. “I think we’re better prepared mentally this time after surviving the 15-month closure last year,” they commented.

And it was all yellow . . . Maddison Gourlay Allenton School raised more than $1700 for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day appeal

thanks to pupils like eightyear-old Holly Chapman. Chapman made up a poster for Daffodil Day with information about how people could donate. Daffodil Day, which took place on Friday, may not have been able to do its usual street appeal, but Holly’s poster was a

way to continue the fundraiser safely with Level 4 restrictions. Moving the appeal online due to Level 4 Covid-19 restrictions, Allenton School sent home Daffodil Day activities in their home learning packet. With help from Chapman’s poster, all of Allenton School raised $1765.64, smashing

their $500 target. Chapman’s poster was a collage of daffodil outlines cut out, as she didn’t know where to start. Someone that lived close to the Chapmans saw the poster on their fence and anonymously delivered $50 into their letter box.

Emergency services were called to a house fire on Wakanui Road at around 5.15pm on Saturday. Fire crews from Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia were called to the property after reports by an occupant that there was fire on the stove. Crews arrived to find the house ablaze, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said. One person was treated for smoke inhalation but not hospitalised. After two hours the fire was extinguished. A fire investigator determined the cause to be from a cooking fire.

Grove Street consultation Residents have seven more days to provide feedback on a proposal to dispose of Tinwald’s Grove Street Park. The Ashburton District Council is considering a request from developers to remove the park in order to build an accessway for a residential subdivision. Council is seeking views from the community about the future of the existing park and is now seeking feedback before making a decision. Submissions on the proposal close on September 7.

I’m not so sold on the South Island’s move down to level 3 as of midnight tonight, I personally think we could have made that move on Friday night, but better safe than sorry, I guess. Both decisions fired up the keyboard warriors though! I really don’t understand the thought

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR with a poor vaccination rate, surely her cautious moves have been for the best? I don’t personally know anyone who has had a dose of it yet, but I saw interviews with half a dozen Kiwis living abroad last week, who have all had it and some of them still had lost the ability to taste and smell. That’s a scary thought for someone like me, who is a VERY big fan of food. Although there could be some positives in that, you could tuck into a pint of DB and imagine it’s a quality craft beer and not be able to taste the difference. Talking positives, if nothing else these lockdowns will have jolted some people into action around getting themselves jabbed. One would think that if enough people do that then this should be the last Covid lockdown we have to endure. It would appear that other countries, with better vaccination rates are resigned to living with this thing and I’m pretty sure we will be hopping on that train next. I, for one, am fully vaccinated and apart from a sore arm, I suffered no other side effects and don’t appear to be any more loopy than usual since receiving the jabs. Clayton, Pine lead Kiwi charge Mid Canterbury stock manager Cam Clayton and his heading dog Pine are the best performing Kiwis and fifth overall, mid-way through a trans-Tasman challenge to identify the hardest working dog. Clayton’s dog is one of three New Zealand entries, competing with nine from throughout Australia in the 2021 Cobber Challenge, which started on August 16. Over three weeks the dogs wear GPS collars to track the distance, duration and average speed of their work. To date, Pine has clocked up 244 kilometres over 28 hours and 44 minutes at a speed of 8.5km/hr after helping Clayton move sheep for pre-lamb shearing. Clayton said the challenge had helped him realise how much Pine actually works. “I fully appreciate the dogs for their hard running efforts and ability to do the job, but the sheer distance they cover is just astonishing.” In the second half of the competition, Clayton and Pine will be sorting cattle for pre-calving and getting the ewes set for lambing. Clayton is stock manager at 12,000 hectare Hakatere Station in the Ashburton Gorge, which runs 800 angus cows and Ashburton Gorge stock manager Cam Clayton is clocking up the kilometres with his top heading 10,500 halfbred ewes. An injured ankle is holding back fellow Kiwi competitor, Josh Tosh from working his normal hours with dog Trix, at Dipton, Southland. He’s doing all he can to get Trix out in the paddocks and submitting her GPS data. The third New Zealand competitor is Peter Aitken and Spark, from Millers Flat, Otago. Overall leader, Victorian dog Skyblue Jack has clocked up 566km. The six-yearold Kelpie has worked 49 hours recording an average speed of 11.5 km/hour. Jack’s strong performance came as a pleasant surprise for owner Ben Jeffery. “Jack’s happiest when he’s working, but he’s stepped it up. I’ve never seen him so happy and fit. He’s wagging his tail and running all day. He’s just working so well for me.” Jack spent two months before the challenge recovering from an injury – he had to have a dew claw removed after a fight with another dog. Jeffery and Jack work at Mepungah Pastoral in Wannon in Victoria’s western district. Split over a few properties, the operation spans 3200ha and they run 28,000 sheep and about 1000 head of cattle. Challenge organiser, Cobber’s marketing manager Kellie Savage, said the leading dogs were on track to beat the record of 835km, set by Glenda Rogan and her dog Buddy last year. Savage said the impressive work done by all competitors highlighted the importance of working dogs to agriculture across Australia and New Zealand. The challenge runs for three weeks finishing on September 5. Data is uploaded each day. People can follow the challenge on the Cobber Dog Facebook page.

Winter grazing regulation changes a win for farmers Heather Chalmers Farmers are breathing a considerable sigh of relief that the Government has proposed dropping the most unworkable aspects of its intensive winter grazing regulations, says Federated Farmers’ environment spokesman and Ashburton Forks farmer Chris Allen. “Everyone wants strong protection for our waterways, but from the day they came out Federated Farmers said a number of aspects of the Essential Freshwater winter grazing rules were simply unworkable.” The recommendations were some of those submitted by the Southern Advisory Group, consisting of two southern farmers and industry representatives, to the Government in December 2020. The Southland Advisory Group was testament to how inclusive processes involving local communities and informed stakeholders were able to produce good results, Allen said.

Federated Farmers’ environment spokesman and Ashburton Forks farmer Chris Allen. PHOTO SUPPLIED “It’s good to see the government taking a pragmatic view – a stance we’re also looking for across more of the multitude of issues they are imposing on farmers in the next three years. “We never give up hope that common sense will eventually prevail, especially when Covid-19 makes it clear New Zealand’s prosperity to a large degree depends on our primary industries’ export earnings,” Allen said. Under the proposed changes,

farmers would be required to resow grazed paddocks as soon as conditions allow, instead of by a set date. Specific requirements around the depth of pugging will also be removed. However, the government has settled on a 10 degrees slope maximum, rather than the advisory group’s recommendation that winter grazing should be allowed on slopes of 15 degrees or less (removing the requirement to determine the mean slope of

a paddock). It has also been proposed that the introduction of intensive winter grazing practice regulations be deferred for a further six months, until November 1, 2022. Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said the proposed regulations had come about from working steadily with industry leaders and councils on how to achieve the right result in a practical way. Consultation runs until October 7. Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor said it and other industry groups had for some time been calling on the government to replace the pugging and sowing date rules with sensible and pragmatic alternatives. “It is positive for farmers that we now have clarity on the proposed approach in this area, which aligns with the recommendations of the Southland Winter Grazing advisory group last December. “We believe the Government’s new proposed approach, which focuses on practical management by farmers, is more workable – and that’s progress. “But we still have concerns around the proposed revised

10-degree slope rule for winter grazing and the certified freshwater farm plan process. “The Government has proposed an improvement on the slope rule, but we still think the approach is more restrictive than it needs to be to manage the environmental risks. For example, we’d like to see flexibility in situations where there is no receiving water body nearby,” McIvor said. B+LNZ also welcomed the sixmonth further deferral of the application of the winter grazing rules to allow time for the certified freshwater farm plans to be put in place and for this to be an alternative pathway for farmers needing to get a consent. DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle said that under the proposal, farmers will have three regulatory pathways – including a permitted activity via a freshwater farm plan. “Ultimate success here does depend on a robust certified freshwater farm plan process; this is yet to be landed.” The potential deferral of the wintering regulations to November 2022 will provide time for detail to be worked out and enables farmers to continue their plans for next season, Mackle said.

Mycoplasma bovis: One active case remains The Five Star Beef feedlot in coastal Wakanui is the only remaining active mycoplasma bovis property in Mid Canterbury after the other two confirmed properties in the district were given the all-clear. The two grazing properties have completed culling, cleaning, disinfecting and a 60-day standdown, ready to resume normal farming activities in the last two weeks.

This finally brings to an end Mid Canterbury cases linked to a spring cluster which began this time last year. Nationally, only two active confirmed properties remain, with 266 cleared properties. The other confirmed property is in the Selwyn district. M. bovis programme director Stuart Anderson said that spring was historically a time of a high

number of detects from bulk tank milk screening, as it was when animals were under stress from calving and young heifers were coming onto the milking platform for the first time. It would not be unexpected to find some infected farms at this time, Anderson said. “The detects show us where to look for possible infection and on-farm investigation confirms

whether infection is actually present.” Anderson has previously said the programme will work closely with Five Star Beef’s owners, Anzco, on depopulation and decontamination of the feedlot. The exact timing of this has not been determined, but the feedlot will be one of the last to be cleared, once infection has been eliminated on farms in the wider

community, to prevent the risk of re-infection. M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease. Since then, 172,488 cattle have been culled and $209.2 million paid in compensation to farmers in a national bid to eradicate the disease.

t’s so easy to think we’re the only ones with so much to worry about, so much concern in a world brought to its knees by a virus of all things. And, yes, it can be distressing when you look at the global Covid death numbers, the cases growing by the hour and how major cities around the globe have been stopped in their collective tracks by a virus that seems to easily mutate and become even more dangerous. We worry about the future and what it’ll look like. It’s distressing, but at least we don’t live in Afghanistan. At least we’re not among the thousands of terrified residents and citizens trying to flee before the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, which is heading for an inevitable murderous medieval rule once more.

Woof. Woof. It was International Dog Day on Thursday and we asked readers to share a photo on our Facebook page of their fourlegged friend and tell us their name, breed, and what they love most about them. Well, doggone it, we got swamped by entries, and they’re still coming in. More than 250 entries so far and 10,000-plus followers reached. Better still, PetZone Ashburton have come to the dog party, offering up prizes for the best small, medium and large pooch. We approached leading judges from the internationally renowned Crufts Dog Show to pick our winners, but they were all unavailable. So resident Guardian dog lover, Daryl Holden, will make the call. Don’t bark at him if he gets it wrong.

This is Sir Atticus Hemingway Bartlett the 1st. He’s a british, american bulldog. I love that he seems to be the reincarnation of a grumpy old man. Sarah Bartlett

I am Groot. He is a border collie and what I love about him is how sweet his nature is and how he never fails to give morning snuggles. Tish Kerslake

This is our pooch Neo. He’s an american stafordshire and is 11 months old. He weighs over 30kg and still thinks he is a lapdog. He even sits on the kids’ knees, even though he is twice their size. Neo has the most beautiful nature and we love him so much. Mel Driscoll

Our girls Frankie and Neela, I love what amazing gentle family pets they are. Renee Pickles

Harvey our miniature poodle, he brings so much happiness to our home Kylie Nicol

Left – This is Bailey, he is a staffy and I love his smile. Harmony Marie Mo’ale

This is Baxter. He will be two years old next month. He is a golden labrador. He has been an essential worker during the lockdown, helping deliver packs of learning materials to students from Ashburton College. He is such a good boy. Carolyn Clough

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Not one to wing it, you like to follow a guide. When there is none, as will be the case today, you’ll create the map yourself. Many will try to predict your next move; none will succeed. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Why are you afraid of being perceived in a certain way? If you tried, you could think of others who are perceived in a similar way who actually embrace, if not capitalise on, the title. Let them inspire you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Strong focus and determination contribute to success but do not guarantee it. Chance plays a part. Soften your focus so you can see what’s in the periphery. Be ready to react to surprises. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): What if the rule was you could only say yes, or only eat green or orange food? The use of unusual rules will help you get more out of the day because it will force a pattern that changes your perception. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Not everything that feels good is good, but today your odds are much better than usual. Go ahead and do the thing that puts a smile on your face because chances are you’ll be smiling later about it, too. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re a collector of random bits of life, especially of the undervalued and discarded variety, which, today, will have the added appeal of a price tag that reads “free” and potential that reads “full of.” LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Take the highway if you must, but there are better views from the roads if you have the time. The highway offers no side streets to where the fun, art, interests, love and other opportunities live. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There are people who will never know the depth of your feelings for them. These feelings are not always appropriate or necessary to express, but you’re grateful to have them today. They make you rich. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The ability to hear information and accept it as neutral is quite rare in this judgmental world. Poets, artists and comedians do it well, as do the priests, preachers, teachers and gurus. Also you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll want to learn something, and before you have, you’ll be asked to teach it. So work fast, get focused and believe in your intuitive sense about what seems important. You can do this. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When you perform, you want applause. Give the cues so they know what to do. Don’t forget to pause at the end, arms spread, hands gesturing for more. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Why improve the aesthetic appeal of practical tools? What does it matter if the paperclip is red or the pen polkadotted? The answer is in a smile, a feeling. If feelings don’t matter, what does?

Racing returns Matt Markham

matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Under Alert Level 3, racing is allowed to resume and Ashburton is one of the first cabs off the rank today. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

sential to servicing the meeting. That means even owners must watch their charges from afar. But the positive spin is that racing is back on track, and owners have a chance to get a return from their investment with some good stakes on offer across tomorrow’s 11-race card. One trainer looking forward to getting back to work, and with a big role to play in the meeting is former Ashburton-based trainer, Andrew Carston. He has 11 runners engaged across the programme, and looks to hold a strong hand in a number of races with multiple runners in some races. But while it’s exciting to have many members of his large training operation back in action, Carston is most looking forward to the return of the exciting Milford Sound, who be-

gins his new campaign tomorrow afternoon. The now four-year-old son of Ocean Park made big strides last season placing in the Southland Guineas, the Manawatu Classic and the Group 2 Championship Stakes and kicks off with a massive 60.5kg on his back. “It’s exciting to have Milford Sound back,” he said. “He isn’t an easy horse to deal with, so it is hard to get a line on where he is at, but he is reasonably forward. “He does have a few things against him this week. He has got to carry plenty of weight, I see they have added another kilo to the jockeys which doesn’t really help him.”

Nominated for two legs of the famous Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown, Milford Sound’s plans for the campaign are still very much open for discussion. “He’ll run around on Wednesday, and we will make further plans after that.” As well as Milford Sound, Carston lines up leading lights tomorrow in Shameless Tart and also The Garrison who he gives a chance to. “Of the older horses, The Garrison is fresh-up and I think he will run well.” Kylie Williams, who has ridden three winners at each of the last two Ashburton meetings will ride both The Garrison and Milford Sound.

Racing under Alert Level 3 • All attendees must wear masks at all areas of the racecourse, with jockeys being permitted to temporarily remove their masks during the running of their races. Refusal will result in expulsion from the race meeting; • The race meetings will be conducted behind closed doors, i.e. only jockeys, trainers and their staff (along with their nominated horses), and others essential to servicing the meetings will be allowed on-course; • There will be no on-course catering, so people must bring their own food to the race meetings; • All attendees will be required to complete and bring a health declaration form to the race meetings; • All attendees will be required to scan into the race meetings through the NZ Covid Tracer App; • All attendees must practise social distancing where possible; • All attendees are encouraged to frequently use soap and or hand sanitiser; and • Anyone with cold or flu symptoms or who has been identified as any kind of potential contact of Covid-positive people should stay home and arrange a Covid test.

While thoroughbred racing resumes today, there’s a little longer wait for harness racing in the Canterbury region. Harness Racing New Zealand have announced their plan for a return to racing which will see harness action kick back into gear under Alert Level 3 on Thursday with a meeting in Invercargill, before Addington and Cambridge on Friday night. In keeping to the restrictions of Alert Level 3, the sport will operate out of minimal venues for until the region returns to Alert Level 2, which means the Ashburton Trotting Club meeting, which is down for this weekend, will also be raced out of Addington Raceway on Sunday afternoon. It’s a blow for the Ashburton club, who secured the new date through negotiations during last season, but racing at Addington isn’t a foreign concept, with meetings held there in the past. One club who will be watching the alert levels closely in the coming days will be the Methven Trotting Club. They’re due to host the first grass track harness racing meeting of the season on Sunday, September 12 and if the rest of New Zealand outside of the Auckland region is down to Alert Level 2 by then, they’ll be able to race on their own track. If the Canterbury region is still in Alert Level 3 then the meeting will likely also be held at Addington Raceway with HRNZ having used just four venues in the past; Alexandra Park in Auckland, Cambridge, Addington and Invercargill.

Meeting moved to Addington By Matt Markham

The good news is that there’s a race meeting likely to happen tomorrow in Ashburton, but the bad news is that it’s unlikely you’re eligible to attend it. The expected announcement of a shift to Alert Level 3 for the rest of New Zealand outside of Auckland means that racing is able to resume from tomorrow – under strict regulations – and the Ashburton Racing Club will kickstart proceedings with a bumper 11-race card. The meeting was initially set down for Thursday last week and then rescheduled to Saturday, but no movement in the alert levels has seen the meeting shifted twice already. It will be the start of a busy few weeks of racing for Mid Canterbury clubs, with the Ashburton Racing Club also set to host a meeting next Monday as New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing looks to kickstart the new season back into gear after Covid-19 left it languishing in the gates. But while action returns to the track, it’s watching from the comfort of home for many across the region with only specific people allowed on course for tomorrow’s meeting, as per the government rules which allow the industry to resume. Only trainers, jockeys and nominated staff of racing stables are able to attend the meeting, as well as other people es-

Currie crushes it Victory not enough to see Team International home in prestigious Collins Cup

Matt Markham Mid Canterbury’s Braden Currie has crushed it on one of the biggest triathlon stages in the world. The now Wanaka-based triathlete claimed victory in the inaugural Collins Cup over the weekend, winning his individual race against competitors from the US and from Europe in dominant fashion. It wasn’t enough for his International side though, who had to settle for third place overall in the teams format competition, which was viewed live by people in more than 100 countries around the world. Currie lined up in the 11th of 12 individual races for the day, which saw six men and six women from the three competing

teams go head-to-head in a 2km swim, an 80km bike and an 18km run. Taking on Europe’s Patrick Lange and Matt Hanson from the US, the match-up was determined to be the race of the runners, with all three competitors known for their strong running abilities. But Currie took it all out of the equation, out of the water first – he crushed it on the bike leg to open up a four and a half minute gap on Lange and Hanson heading through the second, and final transition, and extended the gap even further on the run to win by more than five and a half minutes. Currie’s swim leg, which is of-

He was the fastest man on the Doon River across all races. Points were awarded for the overall win, plus bonus points for the margin between competitors and their rivals at the finishing line. Currie claimed 5.5 points for Team International – the

second highest individual score throughout the competition and only half a point off the maximum six points an athlete could claim. For the 35-year-old, getting on a plane to travel to Slovakia for the event came with some massive sacrifices, including an uncertainty as to when he’ll be able to return home to New Zealand and his family. But on the positive side there’s some good financial reward associated with the weekend’s vic-

tory – Currie’s rank as No. 6 in the world in the Professional Triathletes Organisation rankings will see him net close to around $35,000 for his efforts. There’s no chance to dwell on it though, as Currie is straight into preparation this week as he jumps on a plane to head to Bavaria in Germany to compete in Challenge Roth this weekend. This week’s race is over 226 kilometres, with a 3.86km swim a 178.5km bike ride and a 42km run to finish.

RUGBY

Locals make NZ universities side Matt Markham There’s a strong Mid Canterbury flavour to a New Zealand Universities Rugby Football Club women’s squad that has been announced this week – but whether the team will actually get on the paddock is a completely different situation. Chloe Te Moananui, Nicole Purdom and Mel Puckett have all been named in the 26-woman squad, the first ever official women’s squad named by the club. The side is set to play Tasman on Saturday, September 18 – but with the current rugby

situation in New Zealand due to alert levels and just how the remainder of the season will look, there’s a big question mark over whether or not it will happen. But there’s a strong commitment to try and get the game played in some form during the year. All three local ladies are products of the schoolgirl game here in Mid Canterbury having worn the Mt Hutt College strip during their early days in the game. Te Moananui is currently a member of the Old Boys University club in Wellington, while both Purdom (Canterbury) and Puckett (Lincoln) are based in Canterbury. Puckett is a member of this year’s Canterbury Farah Palmer Cup side.

Netball season comes to an abrupt end Matt Markham Time has worked against Mid Canterbury Netball and its race to finish the premier season. The sporting organisation announced over the weekend that they were calling time on the season, without playing semi-finals or finals in the three premier competitions that were nearing completion. Last week there were hopes of being able to salvage the season in the wake of the nationwide lockdown earlier in the month – but Friday’s announcement of an extension to tonight left the turnaround time required a little too tough. “As much as we wanted to try and get the semi-finals and finals of our ACL Premier competition played, this is not going to be possible,” Mid Canterbury Netball centre manager, Erin Tasker said in an email to clubs. “We need to be back in Level 2 in order for any netball activity to take place, and that simply isn’t going to happen in time for us.” The decision was made based largely on timeframes, but the need to allow players enough time to prepare for the match, instead of just jumping straight back out onto the court was also a major factor. With no finals played, the three premier competitions were decided on standings at the end of the championship round. That means back-to-back vic-

No official prizegiving evening for the season will be held, but Mid Canterbury Netball are working through the process of potentially moving this online to acknowledge the season winners. The premier season hasn’t been the only tournament to fall by the wayside either. Mid Canterbury Netball also announced that the popular Fast5 competition, which was set to begin during early September,

has been cancelled for 2021. However, there was still a strong hope that the Summer League competition, which is usually held during Term 4 of the schooling year – kicking off on Wednesday, October 20 would

INDOOR BOWLS

Bowlers on standby for resumption Matt Markham Local indoor bowlers are ready to hit the mats, but they’re just not sure when they’ll be allowed on. In the wake of the Covid-19 alert levels and lockdown a number of key national events on the calendar have now officially been postponed while the sport’s governing body awaits further information to determine when play might be able to resume.

As well as a number of individuals, who were set to compete for national glory in the coming weeks, the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Paterson team have had another interruption to their season. The team travelled to Westport earlier in the year to compete in the zone playoff for the illustrious Welch Trophy – the pinnacle of representative indoor bowls in New Zealand – only to have play abandoned due to the state of emergency in Buller during their flooding. They trekked to Nelson a fortnight later and were victorious

against teams from Canterbury, the West Coast, Nelson, Blenheim and Golden Bay and Motueka, and were this week supposed to travel to Hamilton to compete in the Welch Trophy. But that’s now on hold, while New Zealand Indoor Bowls wait for a safe avenue in which to play the sport and alert levels have reduced down to at least Level 2 before it can even be entertained. Locally, all play is currently suspended but a return to Alert Level 1 could see the remainder of the season completed, just later than normal.

It is absolutely devastating to have you leave us, but you have been so unwell for so long, and you have fought and fought. But the battle just got too much. My biggest hope is you are reunited with Dad and Paul. You will always be by rock, my confidant, but most of all my Mum. Love you with all my heart I will miss you dreadfully. Those we love never truly leave us.
