Word of caution from council following ‘near miss’ Adam Burns

A word of caution has been advised by the Ashburton District Council following a “near miss” at a pedestrian crossing on Ashburton’s East Street. A mother of two had to haul her seven-year-old daughter back from an oncoming truck, which failed to stop despite the family already halfway over a pedestrian crossing near Kelly’s pub last week. Mikayla Hindson told the Guardian that she believed the crossings were an accident waiting to happen due to their ambiguous appearance amid extensive roadworks in the town’s CBD. In response, council said pedestrians had the right of way at the crossing in question and motorists were required to stop. “The East Street crossings are marked with the standard black and white pedestrian crossing streetlight poles and orange disc indicating a pedestrian crossing is in place.” Infrastructure services group man-

ager Neil McCann said council took any near misses or safety concerns very seriously and have installed additional signs after receiving multiple reports of near misses. “Once the road surface has been constructed and line markings completed, the crossing points will become more obvious,” he said. McCann added that the lighter pavers at the crossings will be painted to give an alternating black and white stripe appearance. “All pedestrians should be aware of vehicle movements and ensure they do not step out onto any pedestrian crossing without ensuring vehicles have stopped to allow them to cross.” The CBD is currently a 30kph zone and will continue to be as the upgrades progress. “Drivers should be driving at that speed limit and be observant of the road ahead of them. “Motorists must slow down and watch out for road signs.”

Nurses ‘frustrated, angry’ ahead of more strikes Adam Burns Exasperated nurses have assured they will not back down as further strikes loom. Ashburton’s New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation (NZNO)

delegate Jane Worsfold said workers have again been left frustrated and angry after pay negotiations with health leaders have once again broken down. Nurses will again walk off the job in a fortnight after tens of thousands of NZNO members voted in favour of an eight-hour strike on August 19. Worsfold said there continued to be a lack of certainty around a sector which had gone nowhere

in three years. “There has absolutely been broken promises,” she said. “We’ve heard all of this before, nurses aren’t going to back down, if something is going to happen, it has to happen now.” Previous strike notices were called off last month, after the union took an improved pay offer to its members from negotiations with DHBs. But it was later revealed that

offer was not enough, with the NZNO saying ambiguity over safe staffing levels was a major factor in the rejected offer. NZNO lead advocate and industrial advisor David White said there were grave concerns for the future of nursing in New Zealand. “Nurses are leaving the profession or are moving overseas where wages and conditions are often so much better and we

must achieve better and safer working conditions to help prevent that,” he said. Struggles to roll out care capacity demand management programmes has also been highlighted as a major issue around nursing workloads. Worsfold highlighted a recent example where an estimated three to four nurses were looking after more than 30 patients during a weekend night shift.

$5.3m Lotto win for Ashburton Maddison Gourlay A lucky Ashburton Lotto winner is no doubt contemplating a life-changing win after taking home $5.3 million. Saturday’s winning ticket was sold online on MyLotto and was made up of $5 million from the powerball first division and $333,333 from Lotto first division. The Ashburton winner confirmed their prize yesterday and that wasn’t the only good Lotto news on Saturday. Another Ashburton player also won a $24,860 second division prize from a ticket bought – but not yet claimed – at Ashburton Countdown North su-

permarket. Ashburton residents took to Facebook to express their delight at a resident winning the big one. Some considered what they would have done with the cash had it been them. Others were just plain funny. Some abridged comments were: Mike Dougherty: I got six numbers and the bonus. Unfortunately, not on same line! Bronnie Bronnie: To all my long-lost relatives, my bank account details are…. Abe Coulter: (I would) buy myself a new lighting console and heaps of stage equipment and put on a massive concert in the oval for everyone. Family friendly. Free food. A chance for all of us in Ashburton to get together and hang out. Of

course, I’d wait to summer when it’s warmer.’’ James Tupou: Hmmm. I’ve just checked my bank account. It is still with -$4.14 balance Christine Marie: Congrats. Make it work for you. If I won, I would donate a high percentage to (mental health advocate) Mike King and his charity. I would keep a percentage for myself for my workshops and live just off the interest. Suzannah Friederika Wundele: I would be so overwhelmed, (I) reckon the shock would finish me off! Savann Siemsen: If I won, my brother’s family, my Mum, my grandparents and my husband and I would be mortgage free Maureen Weavers: Congratulations to the winner. Enjoy your new-found freedom.

Mustangs put smiles on students’ faces Maddison Gourlay Ashburton Intermediate pupils roared in celebration as they saw six Ford Mustangs roll onto school grounds. Six members from the Canterbury Mustang Owners Club brought along cars ranging from 1969 to 2016 models and they had pupils’ eyes watching over them as they parked up on Friday.

Layla Mata, 11, Ollie Smith, 12, Ashton, 12 and Ethan Marriott, 13, were pleased to spend their lunchtime looking at Ford Mustangs thanks to the Canterbury Mustang Owners Club. PHOTO MADDISON GOURLAY

Owners were impressed with the interest from students and the details they were keen to know about the cars. “It’s all about creating a positive experience for the children. If we can inspire a young person into working with cars in their future that’s even more awesome,” club member Patrick Forde said. “Doing something like this on a Friday afternoon brings a bit of colour and spark into their day, and I think it tops the week nicely for them.” Club members got just as much of a kick out of it as the children and teachers did, Forde said.

Virtual reality arcade ready to roll Bizzy bits

Maddison Gourlay Five Ashburton residents have mixed key elements of their childhood and adulthood to create a one of a kind virtual reality arcade. Virtual and Retro Arcade opens on August 12, beside Cleavers Corner on Tancred Street. And the business’ opening announcement had already generated much excitement on Facebook. “As we saw in the response from Facebook, Ashburton is ready for something like this,”

Virtual reality (VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience that creates environments that could be similar to the real world or something completely foreign. Rolling out new mowers

One of the country’s best

The Ashburton District Council has a new tractor and four new mowers ready to roll out this spring. The new equipment has a combined value of about $212,000 (exclusive of GST), which includes a Trimax Pegasus mower that is 6m wide and will mean grass can be mowed at the Ashburton Domain and other reserves much faster. Council community services group manager Steve Fabish said it will free up staff to focus on other work. “The Trimax Pegasus mower can mow the equivalent of what three of the previous smaller units would mow,” he said. “Sports field users should notice a smoother finish to the mown surface and this should be particularly evident to footballers. “The Trimax is set to cut at 40mm above

ground level, and can be adjusted for the reserve condition and sports code.” The new mowing machinery includes a Kubota M100 GX that will drive the Trimax Pegasus mowing front and three Kubota zero turn mowers. Council officers have been familiarising themselves with the mowers and creating new mowing rosters. They can now mow in most weather conditions with the enclosed cabin of the new bigger mower. Fabish said the wide-area mower would be primarily focused on sports fields, then it would be used on neighbourhood reserves and larger road reserves where the mower will be able to mow large areas quickly, leaving the smaller machines to mow edges, tight spots, and around trees. Four old mowers will be retired and disposed of in accordance with council policy.

$2.3m road rehab contract awarded Adam Burns Sections of two of the most wellused rural roads in the district will be upgraded as part of a $2.3 million road overhaul contract awarded last week. The Ashburton District Council has awarded the two-year contract to HEB Construction which will have 4.7km of Thompsons Track and 5.1km of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road made stronger and wider. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said the roads had a number of failures that needed repair. “The current road is not strong enough and wide enough to take the increasing volumes of traffic and heavy trucks and is in need of upgrading,” Brown said. Both roads will be strengthened with 100 to 150mm of gravel construction on top. Thompsons Track will be widened from 6.5m to 8m seal width and Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road will be widened from 7.5m to 8m.

Thompsons Track was badly affected by flooding during the heavy rainfall event at the end of May.

response, local employment and the upkeep of the network that is critical to the area”. The rehabilitation work will be carried out over two years and scheduled to start in October along Thompsons Track, from Jamiesons Road to Line Road, with the 1.7km stretch planned to be completed by Christmas. Then the works move to Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, from Grumbells Road to 1.5km south of Coskeries Road, starting in January and the 2.4km section is scheduled for completion by April. The third phase is a 3km section of Thompsons Track from Line Road to Winchmore Lauriston Road that will start in October 2022 and be completed by Christmas 2022. The fourth site is a 2.7km section of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road from Grumbells Road that is planned for works from January 2023 to April 2023.

“The new roads will be up to the task as these roads are among the most highly trafficked rural roads in the district,” Brown said. HEB construction was awarded

the council’s $30m five-year road maintenance and operations contract last year, which start on November 1. HEB executive general man-

ager civil and maintenance David Simpson, said the company is “pleased to be expanding our presence in the Ashburton District, contributing to flooding

Work on the Ashburton Relief Sewer (ARS) line is on track with Council contractors expected to finish trenching along Albert Street by the end of August. The $10 million project involves laying pipes ranging from 600 to 800 millimetres in diameter underground for 5.1 kilometres, between the river end of Milton Road South and Bridge Street in Hampstead. Wastewater will then flow to the Ashburton District Council’s treatment facilities in Tinwald via the recently installed new wastewater pipeline under the Ashburton River and pump station. The overall project is expected to be completed by March 2022. The project is being undertaken in two parts. Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) is making progress along Albert Street with another three weeks of pipelaying in the street remaining before the work moves into adjacent land. While the work continues along Albert Street, vehicle access to properties and the Ashburton Christian School will continue to be from the

Wakanui Road end only. The pipeline sections are being tested as they are completed and once ACL move off Albert Street, the whole section of the road will be prepared for chip sealing – which will occur in September. Meanwhile, Seipp Construction are currently working in two locations along Milton Road South, laying the section of wastewater pipe that will run from the Ashburton River through to Wakanui Road where it joins ACL’s portion of the laid pipe. Milton Road South from the river to the Beach Road intersection remains closed to traffic – except for residents and is scheduled to reopen in December. Milton Road South between Beach Road and Wakanui Road also remains closed except for residents and will reopen at the end of November. The intersection of Milton Road South and Beach Road will be closed to all traffic from Friday for approximately four weeks, with traffic detoured down Cochranes Road or Trevors Road.

Ashburton climate change talk fires up Adam Burns A fiery clash between a National Party MP and an irate climate change cynic raised the temperature of an Ashburton public meeting yesterday. Kaikoura MP and National Party climate change spokesperson Stuart Smith delivered a talk to more than 20 attendees at a community centre around

the country’s direction within its zero carbon and climate change response frameworks. But Smith’s presentation came under fire from an onlooker who voiced his annoyance around the points raised. “How can you stand there and preach this crap when possibly the temperature hasn’t risen in 20 or 30 years, answer me that please,” the man said. “It’s bullsh*t.” “I’m not preaching, I’m just telling you how it is,” Smith said. “We’ve signed up for it (the Paris Agreement) whether we like it or not.

“But sea level has been rising ever since the end of the ice age and that hasn’t changed.” Smith added that the reason people should be concerned was the prospect of import taxes if New Zealand was not meeting its emission obligations. “The issue for you is that all of our trading partners have said to us, if we’re not doing enough, they’re going to put tariffs on it,” he said. “I’m not here to argue climate change or the science of climate change.” The National Party’s moves on the Zero Carbon Bill back in

2019 and arguments on what was considered man-made climate change were also raised by meeting patrons. “You’re welcome to your view but I think you’re in a minority in New Zealand,” he said. Despite coming in for a tough time from the floor, Smith said it was important to take the views on board. “I may not agree with those views but I certainly defend their right to hold them.”

Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road at the Pudding Hill Stream bridge is closed until Friday for emergency repair work on the bridge and bridge approach. The approach was temporarily reinstated after being washed out in the May flood because the road was a detour when the SH1 Ashburton bridge was closed. Contractors are now working to permanently repair the approach and the side rail of the bridge, which was also damaged in the flood.

Rink open day The Staveley Ice Skating & Curling Rinks is going to have a community open day on Sunday. They may not have ice, but will have the fire going for marshmallows and provide further information on its proposed refrigeration project.

Anzco cuts coal at Seafield Anzco Foods’ Canterbury plant at Seafield has significantly reduced coal consumption by reinstating electric options when the site started operating again after the annual shutdown. This is the first step in a journey away from fossil-fuel fired boilers at the site near Ashburton – a process that has been sped up, thanks to a partnership with Meridian Energy. Meridian has launched a programme to support businesses to reduce their emissions from fossil-fuel fired industrial boilers – the second largest source of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Anzco Foods general manager operations Darryl Tones said it was committed to reducing its carbon footprint. “We are delighted to be working with Meridian in a long-term partnership to help us speed up our decarbonising process. “Transitioning away from coal to electricity requires significant capital investment, so Meridian’s decarbonisation programme

helps make the transition stack up commercially as well as environmentally.” Anzco Foods Canterbury is the company’s largest processing site with the largest footprint so it was also the site where it could make the biggest impact, Tones said. “Anzco Foods’ Canterbury site had retired electric boilers that were able to be recommissioned resulting in a shift from coal to electricity. “This reduction in reliance on fossil fuels together with the longterm Meridian partnership, has meant we can make this move sooner than initially planned.” More initiatives were planned on site that will further reduce its carbon footprint. These are scheduled for next year following further work and investment. Overall, the site transition from coal to electricity will bring additional electricity usage of 14GWH and will remove 2800 tonnes of coal and 5600MT of carbon a year.

Red meat exports worth close to $1 billion in June

Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva.

PHOTO MELISSA WAITE

The New Zealand red meat sector continues to perform strongly with overall exports reaching $937 million in June, up 16 per cent year-on-year, according to the latest analysis from the Meat Industry Association (MIA). Sheepmeat exports increased by 15 per cent to $345m compared with June 2020, beef exports rose eight per cent to $411m and co-products by 40 per cent to $181m. There was also an increase in the value of all categories of co-products, with the largest two categories – prepared meat products and edible offals – increasing by 88 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said China was once again the largest overall market in June with exports worth $377m, an increase of 37 per cent compared with the same period last year “We saw a very significant increase in beef exports to China during June, with a 60 per cent increase year-on-year to $156m. “China’s domestic pork production continues to be affected by African Swine Fever, resulting in demand for high volumes of

imported meat. “New Zealand has also benefited from reduced supply from other major beef exporters such as Australia, which is re-building its herd, and Argentina, where the government has imposed restrictions on beef exports. “Overall, over the past 12 months, New Zealand has exported red meat and co-products worth $9.1 billion. While this is three per cent lower than 2020, it is still historically very high,” Karapeeva said. While global meat prices remained high in 2020-21, they were slightly down on the levels seen in 2019-20, and the value of the New Zealand dollar has also increased against major currencies like the United States dollar over the last year. China was the largest market for the year with a total of $3.6b, followed by the US with $1.9b and the United Kingdom with $419m. In total, over the past 12 months, New Zealand has exported 53,946 tonnes of chilled sheepmeat and 352,632 tonnes of frozen, and 38,437 tonnes of chilled beef and 442,181 tonnes of frozen.

Flood lunch for farmers A free barbecue lunch for all farmers, groups and individuals involved in the Canterbury flood rural recovery response is being held in Ashburton on Thursday. The barbecue is being supplied by the Ashburton Rapid Relief Team who are donating feed which has been transported from the North Island. This feed has been allocated to some of the most badly affected farmers and will be distributed to these farms by the three Canterbury Rural Support Trusts (North, Mid and South). The lunch is an opportunity to meet, greet and thank those involved in the donated feed offer. It is being held at Carrfields depot, 12 Woollen Mills Drive, Ashburton (behind Norwoods) at 12 noon. Southland farmers have also sent truckloads of donated baleage and hay to help flood-hit Canterbury farmers who had paddocks scoured by new river courses and winter crops wiped out by the 100-year flooding event.

New drive for strong wool profitability gaining impetus New Zealand’s wool industry is entering an exciting new era of collaboration, innovation, and consumer-focus to deliver game changing profitability to farmers, William Beetham says. The Federated Farmers Meat and Wool Chairperson said they are “pleased to see industry players work together to end fragmentation and concentrate on driving extra value from the superior attributes we all know that strong wool entails”. “I believe it’s all adding up to a new dawn for New Zealand

strong wool.” Beetham pointed to recent initiatives, including: a proposed merger of two main farmer owned co-operatives (Wools of NZ – 730 farmers; Primary Wool Co-operative – 1400 farmers), with the aim of an integrated supply chain. Farmers will vote on the idea in November but prior to then the Primary Wool Co-operative will become owner of CP Wool brokers by buying Carrfields’ 50 per cent holding. Also the Wool Research Or-

ganisation of NZ (WRONZ) has announced a world-class research initiative with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and development of unique wool particles, powders and pigments with global export potential for applications as diverse as cosmetics, printing, luxury goods and personal care; and a joined-up farm assurance programme is under way, backed by 23 wool companies with the aim to build systems to ensure a standard of supply and tracea-

bility that meets market expectations. “We’re moving beyond selling our clip as a raw product as we look for high-value, branded consumer products that capitalise on strong wool’s natural, sustainable, super-warm, fire-retardant, non-leaching, moisture and mould-resistant credentials,” Beetham said. The initiatives come on the back of companies such as Cavalier-Bremworth, Big Save Furniture and Merino NZ championing strong wool, and the

push into USA markets with branded wool product opportunities by the Strong Wool Action Group (SWAG). “I’m really buoyed by this determination to lift our game, tell the exceptional story of our wool’s provenance, and get better returns for New Zealand farmers,” Beetham said. There’s a long road ahead to get to where everyone wants the strong wool industry to be and part of that is a commitment by farmers to meet assurance standards, he said.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): People really don’t appreciate the extent of what you do for them, but that’s actually better for you. The attention would only slow you down. Besides, you’re not doing it for them. This is your purpose! TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Everyone’s story begins in song. You’ll contribute in kind to today’s section of life, a bit of music to express what cannot be expressed as well any other way. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It is tempting to, when moved by appreciation and affection, get hyperbolic. Just know that the largesse of compliments like “best ever,” “amazing” and “awesome” could be trumped by small, lovely specificity. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You probably won’t be aware of what you think when you’re in the heat of the action but ponder later and much will come to you. Eventually, this gap in timing between action and awareness will narrow. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): If you had to make a documentary of everything in the universe that occurred today at noon, then the runtime would be infinite. Good thing you’re supremely focused on tracking just your own business. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It will be a phenomenon like love at first sight today. Add a couple dozen viewings to the equation. The object of your affection will be a person, project or endeavour you’ve been exposed to a lot already. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Considering Mercury’s retrograde, today will be a remarkably straightforward equation in which it’s easy to tell exactly how much fun you will have. Participation correlates exactly with pleasure. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You love everyone differently, but there are similarities in the way you show up for friends, family, community and romantic prospects. Those commonalities are giving you a reputation for generosity. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): When you’d rather not know, it’s wise (and easy) not to ask. When you’d love to know, but it’s none of your business, not asking takes enormous restraint which is what makes it the right move. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You do what’s necessary. Sometimes it’s a trudge through the muck to deliver a message no one wants to hear. But today, the delivery is as sweet and easy as a squirt of whipped cream on a sundae. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Arguing can be fun when it’s a spar against a worthy opponent, and it serves to sharpen both, regardless of the winner. Ill-matched arguments are as sad as any other unfair display. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It is not every day that you find yourself at liberty to do as you please, write your ticket or take the form and make it your own. That is why, when you can, you must.

OUR VIEW

Whatever it takes – for a new slogan S

o, the Ashburton town slogan ridicule continues around the country – and still city hall responds with the speed of a caterpillar that’s pigged out on too many leaves. Slowly, you understand. Very slowly. More than four months since the Ashburton Guardian began a community drive for the creation of a catchy, modern slogan to link in with the growth of the district, its changing face and all-important tourism and business aims, and what have we got to show? Nothing. Zilcho. A big fat zero. OK, so maybe that’s a bit harsh. We know there’s been some movement because the council has talked about it, including in April when all eight elected councillors backed a move to ditch the district’s much-derided

Daryl Holden slogan, Ashburton: Whatever it Takes. The council team all thought we could do better than that catchphrase, which has been around in some capacity for more than a decade. “Yes’’, you thought. “We’re under way.’’ Sadly, since then little else has happened, apart from receiving significant national media attention, focusing mostly positively on Ashburton because it looked like a progressive, forward-thinking town wanting and understanding the value of a clever slogan. That media focus was

advertising gold, the sort of stuff that costs thousands to pay for. So, we waited, and we waited. The devastating floods came and more bridge drama unfolded. That naturally took priority and still does in terms of a long and challenging recovery. Mayor Neil Brown was an almost heroic front man for our district in that time, always being available, being the calm and reassuring presence you want from a leader in a crisis. He was outstanding. No question. But now we need him to show some leadership around the slogan opportunity because it is an opportunity, and it’s not just about coming up with a few clever words. Ashburton, like all regional towns and smaller cities in New Zealand, will have to work much harder in the next decade at

marketing themselves and developing a real competitive identity than they have done in the past. Their audiences are becoming more discerning and demanding. Their competitors are increasingly becoming more sophisticated. A slogan and clever welcome sign should play an important role in any town’s marketing and branding plan. Make no mistake about that. Simply, we can’t go on and have our reputation ridiculed because we live in a town perceived to have limited imagination and with having the worst slogan in New Zealand, as it was again described in a recent national media story. It’s true that recently a council working party met behind closed doors to decide what to do. But as is the norm, they agreed that a report would be drafted. No

doubt that it’ll be checked 10 times by five different people, then checked again, before three more meetings are held before finally it’ll be released to you and I, Mr and Mrs ratepayer. Regardless of what that report says, I have a solution. Select a panel of community and business leaders with varied backgrounds to help drive this, to help make it happen because clearly the council can’t. I’d love to be involved on behalf of the community to provide a recent arrival’s viewpoint, especially given I identified early on a clear gap in the town’s branding profile by not having a slogan that was relevant and, dare I say it, not the laughing stock of New Zealand. You know where to reach me, Mayor Brown and co. My phone is always on.

Triathlete Hayden Wilde on the podium (far right) after being presented with his bronze medal. Inset – An emotional Wilde just after his final.

Olympics – emotional times I

have been very critical of them in the past and still have some issues with the cost of their product, but I must congratulate Sky on their coverage of the Olympics. If I’m honest I didn’t have my Olympics buzz on when the games got under way, but that all changed with one interview. Hayden Wilde’s interview immediately after his bronze in the triathlon was awesome. It had nothing to do with the questions asked by the reporter; it was all about the raw emotion. An out-of-breath Wilde just let it flow, sobs of joy, mixed with exhaustion. It was captivating viewing.

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR

If that wasn’t enough, we got to watch his embraces with his teammate and with his mentor Hamish Carter. Then we eavesdropped in on a phone call with his coach. It was just brilliant. That type of coverage has continued with all of our medallists and even some of our competitors who finished down the field in their events. To hear the joy, but relief in Emma Twigg’s voice after she

nailed her gold extracted tears of pride from yours truly (don’t tell the boys from golf that though). Dame Val talking about her bronze being more significant than the golds because of her two wee kids and all the sacrifices was amazing. Hamish Bond, the guy who was unbeatable in a pairs boat, then hopped on a bike and made a Commonwealth Games team and then hopped back in the boat to inspire and lead the eights to gold, he has to be one of our sporting GREATS. Hearing him talk about challenging the rest of the crew and seeing their elation at winning was out

of this world. Some of these reactions will be more memorable for me than the event itself. I keep thinking, man it would have been so good to hear from John Walker immediately after his 1500m gold in 1976 or Barbara Kendal after she won New Zealand’s only gold in ’92. So, thanks Sky for the coverage but an even bigger thanks to the athletes themselves for allowing the insights into their success. On a slightly different tack but still talking athletes (cough cough) Waitangi weekend next year is shaping up to be a biggy in the Lauriston area. The Lauriston Cricket Club will cele-

brate their centennial. I have played at Lauriston a couple of times in the past and it was always a heap of fun on the ground and in the clubrooms after the game. That should be a great weekend. past and present players are asked to keep an eye on the LCC Facebook page for details. I’m not saying you keep bringing up the past, what I am suggesting is that it’s worth getting a bit savvy from the wounding experience. It’s important to release anger, annoyance and bitterness (even that little need for revenge). These emotions are just not worth carrying and if left unattended, can lead to illness. It’s simply not worth putting yourself through that. However, I think gaining some wisdom from the hurt allows you to set some suitable rules. These will look different de-

Morrison holds on to win third premiership

Late double secures draw on the turf

Matt Markham John Morrison capped off his last days as a junior driver in the finest of fashions on the weekend. The young former Ashburton College student claimed his third consecutive national junior drivers’ premiership with 57 winners, staving off the late charge of fellow Mid Cantabrian, Sarah O’Reilly, in the process. Morrison joins an elite list of drivers to have won three or more premierships as a junior driver. Only Dexter Dunn, Peter Ferguson, Anthony Butt and Tony Herlihy have managed three or more premiership wins, meaning Morrison joins

ple. I have had great support,” Morrison said. Included in the list of achievements for the season was a foray into the big time, thanks in large to his combination with an excellent filly, Lifes A Beach. “Running second in the Jewels with Lifes A Beach was the main one. I had a lot of placings and a few wins on her.” There was still plenty for O’Reilly to celebrate in the final stages of the season though. She grabbed two wins on the final night of racing for the season on Friday night, including the time-honoured, Darren DeFilippi Memorial for junior drivers. Living up to her red-hot form a fortnight after winning the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ championship the 21-year-old took the bull by the horns with her drive Fighting Fire and found the front early and never looked back, winning easily. “It’s pretty special because everybody wants to win this race as a junior,” she said af-

ter the race. “They had a great field tonight, and it was great to see all the other juniors out there all having a go for it. “It is something that I will always treasure.” O’Reilly retains her junior driver’s licence for the new season which began on Sunday while Morrison graduates up into the ranks of an open horseman. He kicked off the new season with a victory on Sunday at Addington when he saluted with Takemybreathway for North Canterbury trainer, Glen Scott. There’s another milestone in the reckoning for the young talent too, with Sunday’s win taking him to 195 career driving wins.

Standout season John Morrison

It wasn’t a win, but the result was as good as one. With no impact on the top four standings in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition, Mid Canterbury’s senior men’s side went to Christchurch with the advantage of a little freedom on their side on Saturday. Up against the third placed Hornby side, both teams were already certain of semi-final berths in a fortnight – so the match was more a warm up for what’s to come. That said, being 0-2 down after the first quarter wasn’t a position Mid Canterbury wanted to be in, but they were, and were then forced to dig deep to get back into the match, which they did with a late charge to secure a draw. With their tails up, Hornby proved a tough opponent for the first half of the match and Mid Canterbury battled to get themselves into the game. But the half-time break worked the oracle, and a much more composed side took to the turf for the third. Still no goal was forthcoming, and heading into the final quarter of the match, Mid Canterbury looked set to be on the wrong side of the ledger come the final whistle. But, with 11 minutes to play a wellworked play through found James Wright in enough space to slide one past the keeper and make it 1-2, and then a minute later a penalty corner gave Sam Moore a chance to grab Mid Canterbury’s second, and things were back to level. The side had a chance to make it an impressive comeback victory with five minutes to go, but were unable to grab the goal and a 2-all draw was the final result. The side gets one more crack at the normal season this week when they play Riccarton, but one eye will already be on the following week and knockout hockey.

Bowlers dominate Paterson Matt Markham A complete team performance across the board led the Ashburton Indoor Bowls team to delayed Paterson Trophy glory on the weekend. The tournament, which features the top eight players from Ashburton, Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay Motueka and the West Coast, was originally supposed to be held in Westport, but was postponed due to the flooding suffered in the area last month. Relocated to Nelson and played over both Saturday and Sunday, Ashburton showed no signs travel weariness as they dominated the event from start to finish. “It was a really strong performance, and one where everyone

Locals provide seven of the top eight leading scorers played their part,” head-selector, Mat Bassett said. “We’ve got a good, well-balanced and strong side and they stepped onto the mats for a big weekend, and really stepped up and produced some great results.” Playing five rounds which consisted of a game of fours, pairs and singles, Ashburton were always in control and when it came to the final game of the day, the lead was such that Ashburton couldn’t be beaten, and they were declared early winners. Ashburton finished the event on 124 competition points, with Golden Bay and Motueka second with 94.5 and Canterbury in

third on 92.5. Points were awarded for each discipline with a fours victory with four points, a pairs win worth three and a singles victory worth two. Highlighting the strong performance off the board, Ashburton players filled seven of the top eight spots on the individual standings by the end of the competition.

The local team has now qualified to attend the historic Welch Trophy – the pinnacle of representative bowls in New Zealand where they will face sides from Auckland, Waikato, North Taranaki, Hutt Valley and Southland in Hamilton. The Welch Trophy lasts three days, beginning on September 3. Grant Wilson will be chasing national glory today in Christchurch.

South Canterbury claim Hanan Shield Matt Markham It wasn’t to be for the Mid Canterbury senior netball side in their bid for three consecutive Hanan Shield titles on the weekend, but there were still plenty of encouraging signs with another big event just around the corner. Up against sides from South Canterbury and North Otago in Waimate on Sunday, Mid Canterbury made a strong start in their bid to lift the silverware again with a dominant 51-29 win over North Otago in the middle game of the three rounds. That result gave the green and golds a good sign, as South Canterbury had beaten North Otago 69-39 in the morning game, creating a good matchup between two evenly matched sides in the afternoon. In a tough and close encounter, it was South Canterbury though who emerged victorious. They won the match 45-38 to lift the Hanan Shield off Mid Canterbury. With the South Island Senior Tournament just around the

Valuable experience gained by Mid Canterbury in defeat

Members of this year’s Mid Canterbury Senior Netball side will now turn their attention to the South Island Senior Tournament in Dunedin on August 14 and 15. PHOTO ADAM BURNS 110721-AB-1270 corner in Dunedin, the weekend was a good opportunity and learning experience for a relatively new Mid Canterbury side, who will have gained plenty from the tournament. The South Island Senior tournament is being held on the 14th and 15th of August.

This competition was introduced to provide a competitive platform to help develop and enhance the senior player experience in the South Island. Bringing back the “rivalry” of the regions, that was once alive with the Lois Muir Challenge and Lion Foundations, set a

high standard across the senior netball competitions and helped aid players on their development pathways. This championship has been created to help give players opportunity and exposure to help gain experience and play good quality netball.

Mixed bag for local footballers A mixed bag of results on the football pitch, but the in-form local sides kept rolling on Saturday. With the end of the season fast-approaching and some silverware on the line, it’s tough times in the Mainland Football competitions, but a number of local sides are still well within the hunt. The Mid Canterbury United Seniors suffered a tough 0-3 loss to Universities on Saturday afternoon at the Ashburton Domain, but are still with a sniff in the Trophy Round of the Championship, albeit without another home game remaining. Mid Canterbury’s Division 3 side also finished on the wrong side of the ledger with a 1-2 loss to Burwood to see them slide down the standings, but the club’s 15th grade side kept their ball rolling with another big victory. They downed Christchurch Boys’ High School 7-0 on Saturday morning with doubles to Kingsley Olawale, Boaz Drye as well as goals to Xavier Paris, Riley Green and Tyler Wallace. The women’s side were also in grand form, with the women’s competition split into two pools for the final stage of the season. They won 6-1 over Hornby to make an early claim for the title. It’s the Methven Division One side who are in the best position though. Their 6-3 win over Cashmere Technical gained them some valuable breathing room at the top of the standings. Five points clear of their nearest rival, a win this weekend against Waimak United will put them in an unassailable position.

Heartland Rugby squad announced Matt Markham There’s a strong mix of the tried and true, coupled with some youthful new faces to this year’s Mid Canterbury Heartland rugby squad. Following Saturday’s Watters Cup final, coaches Jason Rickard, Dale Palmer and Sean Cuttance announced a 28-man squad for this year’s campaign, which begins this weekend with the annual pre-season clash with Ellesmere. Taking stock from many of the great performances during the Combined competition and also

Jackson Donlan back in the green and gold the Watters Cup, the trio have settled on a good mix of players with some real depth in numbers for what should be a big campaign for the Hammers. Many have been rewarded for their consistent efforts on the paddock each week and in the training sessions held since the initial 42-man squad was named last month. There’s plenty of local experience in the mix, with regular names in the side such as Seta Koroitamana, Eric Duff and Will Mackenzie, but also plenty of new and exciting names to have emerged over the past four months.

Mid Canterbury Heartland squad Southern: Adam Williamson, Brad Tarbotton, Callum Burrell, Eric Duff, George Williams, Will Mackenzie.

Celtic: Ashton McArthur, Isireli Masiwini, Liam McCormack, Nathan

McCloy, Paovale Sofai, Raitube Vasurakuta, Shepherd Mhembere. Rakaia: Harvey Blyth, Iromi Dawai, JJ Manning, Lota Nasiga, Nick Foxley, Seta Koroitamana. Methven: Tait Chisman, Nete Caucau, Osea Baisagale, Matthew Holmes, Manasa Bari. Loan Players: Tom Reekie (Linwood), Osian Davies (Shirley), Brooke To’omalatai (Linwood). Player of Origin: Jackson Donlan (Shirley)

Watters Cup champions, Celtic provide the biggest number of players with seven, while both Southern and Rakaia have six of their senior players included. A notable returning name is that of big mid-fielder, Nete Caucau, who returns to the squad after missing out in recent years. He’s been in strong form for Methven this season and is always a handful for defenders. The coaching panel have recruited well to fill the four spots in the squad earmarked for loan players and a player of origin. The side brings back a familiar face to the green and gold scene with former captain, Jackson Donlan this year’s player of origin. The former Rakaia player is now plying his trade for Shirley in the Christchurch Metro competition, and brings a wealth of experience with him as well as a good understanding of the inner workings of the Mid Canterbury scene. He’s joined by three other Christchurch players who join the squad as loan players for the season. Linwood first-five Tom Reekie brings plenty of experience as well as a former New Zealand

Former Mid Canterbury captain, Jackson Donlan is returning to the Heartland side this year as a loan player. Heartland player from when he played for the West Coast. Welshman Osian Davies, who plays for the Shirley Club, is another inclusion, as is Brooke To’omalatai. The side gets their first hit-out this weekend when they play

Ellesmere in Methven on Saturday. They’ll then take on the Canterbury B side at the Ashburton Showgrounds a week later, before a trip to Hamilton to play Thames Valley during the Waikato Rugby Union’s 100th celebrations with the game at FMG Stadium.

To Celtic, the Watters Cup Steve Devereux

Huge defensive effort sets path to magical victory

Celtic is Watters Cup country, once again. Against almost all the odds, on Saturday at the Ashburton Showgrounds, the green machine came from behind a plucky and determined Southern team inside the final 10 minutes to grab victory 25-20 – and lift the coveted trophy. Two evenly matched sides and perfect conditions for a game of rugby set the standard for what promised to be another gripping Watters final, and again, the rugby didn’t disappoint. It took some time, more than 10 minutes in fact, for both sides to settle into their work, and it was Southern who looked in control only for a turnover inside their own half to create the first moment of the match. A deft little chip kick through the defensive line from a turnover had Monty Nixon win the foot race to the ball to open the scoring. The conversion went wide, but Celtic claimed a tactical advantage by getting the first points of the game.

Celtic’s strike weapon scores

Southern bounced back, as they inevitably do with a penalty of their own – but shortly after, Celtic’s barnstorming winger, Raitube Vasurakuta, stamped his authority and bashed and crashed his way to the line to score. Nixon slotted the conversion and at 123, Celtic were in complete control. Or at least so it seemed. Southern were kept in the match through a string of penalties, and a deep kick into Celtic territory had them hot on attack and from solid lineout ball, they barged their way over the line to get their first try on the board, with Brad Tarbotton emerging from the pile of bodies with the ball in hand – and a smile on his face. George Williams added the extras for Southern and in an instant that little bit of breathing room, Celtic had afforded themselves was gone. Celtic weren’t done for the first half though. A few minutes later, they turned the game on its head once again. A quick tap from a penalty resulted

Halfback Liam McCormack was a key factor in Celtic’s success. in some good forward momentum, and when they forced a lineout within striking distance, the Celtic forwards found their mojo and repeated the Southern effort of a few minutes earlier, crashing over with the inspirational Hamish Finnie standing up once the mass had dispersed to claim the try. Again, Nixon added the extras, and at 17-10, Celtic looked to round out the half. But Southern had one final say as Celtic’s discipline again let them down, with Wil-

liams adding a second penalty to bring the margin back to four at the break. A number of missed opportunities, especially with the boot, was a glaring issue in the first half and it continued early in the second too. Southern took control in the possession stakes, using their big men as one-off runners to get some forward momentum. But, as they have done all season, Celtic stood up to the barrage, and their defensive work was as good as it’s been – especially when faced with defending their own line from just a few metres out.

Scrum infringements prove expensive

Somewhere at the bottom of the heap is Brad Tarbotton, having scored Southern’s opening try in the Watters Cup final.

A number of scrums put Southern on the front foot, and as their set-piece dominated that of their rivals something eventually had to give, and it wasn’t long before referee Glen Peddie ran under the posts and awarded a penalty try for repeated issues and just like that, for the first time in the match, Southern were in front – 20-17. That action was always going to provide a reaction, and both sides went to work trying to break through the barriers in front of them – Southern manufacturing a big chance, but the vital last pass went begging. Celtic fought their way back into the Southern zone and were awarded a penalty ,with young Elyh McKibbin, only minutes on the paddock from warming the pine for the first two thirds of the match, stepped up to the mark and slotted the attempt to bring the scores back to level. The talented winger got right back into the action moments later, latching onto the last pass in a string of play which found him with clear space and a clean dash to the line which he duly delivered, and Celtic were in front 25-20, with full time fast approaching. Southern still weren’t done with though. And as they’d done on multiple occasions during the season, they worked their way back into the match, throwing everything they had at the Celtic defensive line, only to be met with determined and

PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 310721-HM-68

passionate resistance. Eventually, the moment came. Celtic’s desperate defence created a turnover, and the wheel turned back in their favour. They kept control of the ball and worked their way through a number of phases and when a penalty came their way, Nathan McCloy tapped and kicked the ball 20 rows back into the grandstand, and Celtic were Watters Cup champions. There were heroes all over the paddock for the green machine. Finnie was excellent, leading a committed pack from the front, while Liam McCormack played a pivotal role behind of the forward pack, providing good ball to his backs and also sniping away himself with the ball in hand. Vasurakuta, as well as his usual blockbusting runs, came up with one flying tackle from the other side of the paddock when Southern looked to have broken the line, and Cam Butler was a fine custodian at the back, giving vocal direction to all in front of him – but it was absolutely a full team effort from Celtic. For Southern, their big men did what they always do, dominating up the middle and in their one-off attacks, and James Hastings was always a serious handful in the midfield. They’ll rue a missed opportunity to become the first side to do the Combined and Watters double, but there can only be one winner, and in their 100th year of existence, there were none more deserving than Celtic.

At a glance Celtic 25 (Hamish Finnie, Raitube Vasurakuta, Monty Nixon, Elyh McKibbin tries; Nixon 1 conv. McKibbin 1 pen.) Southern 20 (Brad Tarbotton, Penalty tries; George Williams 1 conv, 2 pen) Halftime: 17-13.
