Lili Haydon Gourmet café owners Nicky and Mark Milmine say it’s their staff that have allowed their two businesses to thrive even though they had to endure the CBD upgrade and Covid-19 chaos. That’s why the couple wanted to thank their 18 employees, including daughters Molly and Mickayla, for all their hard work through the year’s ups and downs at The Somerset Grocer and Millhouse Kitchen businesses where retaining everyone was the focus. “The number one priority was to keep people employed and we have managed to do it because without them we can’t operate,” Mark said. And Ashburton gourmet café lovers would no doubt be pleased they’ve survived the most challenging of times for hospitality businesses. Because The Grocer, as it’s dubbed by locals, is also the social hub of the town in the middle of Ashburton’s CBD on Burnett Street. And now, after a year and a bit of redevelopment work, the completed CBD upgrade looks amazing and should be celebrated, according to Mark. So Ashburton has clearly been good for Mark and Nicky, who last year also purchased the Millhouse on West Street. The Millhouse has the same set of values as The Somerset Grocer, with great coffee and delicious food, but with more outside dining in the garden. The pair have been in Ashburton for the past 18 years, having previously lived in Oamaru. Nicky has been in the hospitality business since she was 14. The only difference was now they’ve gone from night time hospitality to day time. “We can go home and enjoy a

As is often the way, they discovered Ashburton and the opportunities by chance when they came up for a weekend trip. The rest, as they say, is history because Ashburton has also
grown with their daughters, with Molly now attending Canterbury University. Having Christchurch so close had been perfect for the family and they even have a few university students working over the summer holidays at both operations. In the meantime, in the mad
rush to Christmas and the threat of the pandemic ever apparent, the Milmine team simply want to make sure everyone is kept safe and followed the Government’s customer vaccination requirements. “We are happy to do our part to keep everyone safe and it’s a
$15,000 fine if we don’t.” So now they’re looking to find more permanent staff in the New Year, and they’ll need them. They’ve already seen some Aucklanders fly through their doors, confirming that the good word about quality cafes does indeed spread far and wide.

Every task is done right Malcolm Hopwood The Tarbotton family lives by the catch phrase “done right”. Tarbotton business development manager, Tim Tarbotton, said that “done right” was both their branding message and their promise to the community. “We like to think every job is done right,” said Tim, a second-generation family member of the Tarbotton Land and Civil business. “If it’s not achieved, we return and make sure it’s completed right. “It’s part of our language.” It’s so important that the words “done right” were emblazoned on the back of their caps. It’s how they get their repeat business for Tarbotton Land and Civil, which was rebranded last year, but began 30 years earlier. Stuart Tarbotton started working on farms, but was then employed by Fortex as a butcher at night. It left him free during the day to work as a contractor. Gradually contracting consumed and motivated him. He bought a business from Bryan Ching, established Stuart Tarbotton Contracting, and left boning meat behind. Today Tarbotton’s land development and civil contracting extends from the southern alps to the sea, from Rakaia to the Rangitata and beyond. “You’ll find us in North Otago and Canterbury,” Tim said. But the majority of their work is devoted to local farmers and, for that reason, they support the Ashburton Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign. “We provide such services as dairy lanes, building maintenance, water race clearing, drainage work, developing a farm by building irrigation ponds and preparing a site for construction,” Tim said. Then there’s work for commercial clients such as Talleys, Calder Stewart and Lovett’s family farm. In town, there were residential driveways, subdivisions and landscaping.

The family also give back to the community through sponsoring rugby, tennis, individual sportspeople and the Longbeach run, walk and bike coastal challenge.
It’s a family business and Tim returned in 2021 after several years in Wellington achieving a BCom from Victoria University and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Welltec. Marketing’s also in his DNA and he supervised last year’s rebranding, remotely from the North Island. “I wanted to return and be part of Tarbotton’s. Family is important in every way. We have a vibe and intend to retain it,” he said. With Mum and Dad, Stuart and Debbie, as directors, Ben Tarbotton as a multi-skilled machine operator and Tim’s twin brother, Bradley, as site works manager, conversations around the dinner table are interesting. “They sometimes take the form of a business meeting, but we’re family and family is our future,” Tim said.

Funding for funders to help those in need Malcolm Hopwood
When the power was disconnected to an Ashburton family, a local organisation came to their rescue, paid their arrears, and had the power restored. The same organisation, committed to helping disadvantaged people in the community and alleviating their financial hardship, has received $35,000 from the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation. The Ashburton Benevolent Trust was established in 1998 to help those in need, especially young people who “suffer poor health or have less chance in life than their peers”. The trust is administered by secretary/ treasurer, Wendy Severins, and three trustees – Anne Fleming, Jackie Girvan, and Stephen Millichamp. The trust meets ongoing needs of people who lack funding for essentials in life and contributes to a range of programmes such as children with learning disabilities, music therapy for youngsters with severe disabilities, rent arrears, counselling services for all ages, car repairs, cancer treatment, speech assessment and lessons and fuel to receive dialysis treatment in Christchurch. Recently the trust met funeral expenses for a family, provided funding to purchase a second-hand mobility scooter, and paid for a trampoline, adapted for a disabled child. Severins is delighted with the funding and said she is “privileged to receive the
Trustees of the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, Graham Kennedy and Mary Ross. amount so we can continue the good work we do and help people in need in Mid Canterbury”. “All of the funding is dedicated towards meeting financial hardship.” Individuals and a range of agencies can apply for grants which are considered and
approved if the applicants meet a set of criteria. The trustees meet 10 times a year, but are flexible enough to deal with urgent submissions. “We’re able to move quickly to assist if required,” Severins said.
“While there’s a need in Mid Canterbury the Ashburton Benevolent Trust will continue to exist.” The other local recipient of Mackenzie Charitable Foundation grants is Mid Canterbury Riding for Disabled which was given $10,000.
Air pollution levels decline in Ashburton Jonathan Leask Ashburton is turning around its dirty air habits. The final version of the Ministry for Environment’s Our Air 2021 report released this month showed Ashburton had been exceeding the new World Health
Organisation’s (WHO) air quality guidelines for PM10 in every year between 2017 and 2020. However, ECan director strategy and planning, Katherine Trought, said the report found that air quality in Ashburton has improved dramatically over the past year. “In the early 2000s the air quality in Ashburton exceeded 20 of the National Environmental Standard for Air Quality (NESAQ) for PM10 a year. “However, between 2020 and 2021, there were no exceedances
of the NESAQ in Ashburton.” In 2021, the maximum daily average PM10 concentration was 36 micrograms per cubic metre of air, this is below the new World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline of 45. Trought said that both the NESAQ and the new WHO guidelines for daily PM10 are currently being met in Ashburton. “Ashburton’s improvement in air quality is the result of the community changing how they heat their homes, specifically by
making an effort to use clean, dry wood, replacing expired wood burners and using good burning techniques. “We’re pleased that the community has embraced council education and incentive programmes which encourage people to control sources of air pollution. “We hope to see the number of PM10 and PM2.5 events continue to decrease in the coming years.” Ashburton sat only behind Dunedin in terms of improving its PM10.
From 2017 to 2020, Ashburton ranked 19th out of the sites monitored with Arrowtown easily the worst offender followed by Anzac Square (Timaru), and Pomona Street (Invercargill). The report reflects the latest scientific findings which shows overwhelming evidence of the negative impacts to human health from pollution at even low levels. The elderly, young people, and those suffering from existing health conditions are especially vulnerable to poor air quality.

Deputy mayor appeals for Opuke speed reduction Adam Burns Deputy mayor Liz McMillan is imploring transport leaders to urgently look at the speed limit on a state highway road in the burgeoning Methven township, describing a section of the road as dangerous. An online petition advocating for a speed limit reduction along a portion of State Highway 77 from 100kph to 50kph has been set up by the Methven community leader after it was suggested a review could take up to six years. With extensive residential development, a growing population, alongside the recent addition of the $15 million Opuke hotpools attraction, McMillan said the area of highway, between Racecourse Avenue and Holmes Road was fraught with risk. “The popular Methven walkway runs behind the racecourse and we have many people walking on the side of the road where many cars are speeding past at 100kph. “It is dangerous for the community and for our visitors.” One commenter on the petition said it was “utter madness” to leave the road at 100kph for

town was well down on its list of priorities after Harris’ letter was forwarded onto multiple managers at the agency. Waka Kotahi maintenance contract manager John Keenan, in response to Harris’ letter, said the State Highway 77 corridor was up for a speed management review, but realistically it was “three to six years away at best”. Following discussions with NZTA senior safety engineer James Long, Keenan said the corridor was not considered a high priority. Keenan told McMillan and other Ashburton District councillors at a Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee meeting last month to provide feedback with the agency after concerns were raised that speed limit reviews were too sluggish. “It’s also one of our lowest classification state highways. “The [Safer Journeys Risk Assessment Tool] indicates that the collective risk is low-medium, and personal risk is medium, so no ‘quick-fix’ is available in the short term.” The petition has so far been signed by more than 300 residents.

Finally, the real Joseph Parker emerges W
hack. Whack. Down. And three times at that. And that, my friends, was one of the highlights of the sporting year when south Auckland-raised Joseph Parker finally started to look like he could perhaps belong in the upper echelon of heavyweight boxers after a comprehensive win over unbelievably tough Brit, Derek Chisora, in Manchester yesterday. He couldn’t club his way to that elusive knockout, but three times he dropped Chisora to the canvas. Three times in 12 pulsating, brutal rounds against one of boxing’s toughest nuts, a 37-year-old veteran who somehow ate punch after punch, his eyes rolling back at least twice after knockdowns, yet somehow refusing to yield. Yes, I know some of you probably regard boxing as little more than legalised thuggery. Each to their own, I guess. But I’ve always been a fan of the sweet science, a
Daryl Holden pugilism lover from way back, ever since a high school friend was the best in the country for his age and weight range for four successive years. Johnny was as tough as they came, a boy from south Invercargill or the “Bronx’’ as we used to lovingly call it. He would go running to improve his aerobic fitness, but he would ensure there was an extra element of pain that made his jogs almost masochistic. He would often run with a pack on his back, chock full of rocks. I would go with him, but on my bike. I often found it hard to keep up. But what I really liked about him was that out of the ring
he was a mild-mannered, deeply religious type, who thought the best of everyone around him. He showed that, even as a red-hot amateur fighter, you could still be two different personalities – one in the ring and one outside it. Parker wanted to be that split personality. We see him on social media in cute videos, singing, playing the guitar and acting. He seemed the consummate family and community man, a very proud Samoan. But until yesterday, he also seemed just a touch too nice in the ring to be a true heavyweight boxer. Yes, he did win the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) world title five years ago but claiming that belt, to be fair, was nowhere near as significant as the other three major world championship groups. Still, Parker for a short while held a world title belt. Good on him, but I still looked at him, watched him fight, and
just thought he doesn’t look the real deal. He looked too small and didn’t have that mad man element that somehow accompanies the greats, that Mike Tyson fury, that look in his eyes that says he really wants to hurt someone. But yesterday, oh yesterday, I saw that change. The commentators saw it, too. They talked about Parker having “spite’’ in his punches. He wanted to hurt Chisora. He stalked him around the ring, his bigger, stronger frame looking menacing and forcing Chisora to mostly back pedal. In the end, Parker won a thrilling slugfest in a unanimous points decision to make amends for his controversial victory over the same fighter in May. It was thoroughly deserved and one-sided, a performance that just could be the start of something special as Parker continues to build and develop under new trainer Andy Lee. Parker, of course, dreams of
becoming a world champion again, but a title shot against good friend Tyson Fury or Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk is unlikely. Both face mandatory fights in defence of their world titles before any prospective unification fight, and Fury has said many times that he would never fight his good mate Parker anyway. So, while all that plays out, Parker will keep working away, waiting for his next opportunity. A fight in New Zealand next year is possible and, depending on the quality of his opponent, I’ll try to get there because the Joseph Parker I saw yesterday suggested a true and dominant fighter was starting to emerge. By no means is he the finished product but he certainly made the boxing world sit up and take notice. Mean, marauding, brutal, yet calculating. There was a lot to like about Joseph Parker mark two.

Christmas weight gain: The truth Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR ■■ Most people gain a full size during the holidays: MYTH. A study found that females gain about half a kilo and males around the 1 kilo mark in the lead up to the New Year. That’s far less than the 3 to 4 kilos often cited for this time of year. (Speak for yourselves . . . I totally buck that trend each year. There is something that happens to me mentally as soon as we drive through the gates at the Rangi Camp Ground, that says, ‘Yes Phill, you can eat as much bread and drink loads of crafties and it will have no effect on the scales what so ever.’ Unfortunately, that mental doesn’t let the physical know about it). ■■ Bloating isn’t the same as fat weight: FACT. One reason you may feel like you’ve packed on more weight is because many holiday foods trigger bloating and water retention. The main culprit? Carbs. And sodium (aka bread and crafties). ■■ Exercise staves off holiday pounds: MYTH. More than one study has found that those who work out around the holidays gain the same amount of weight as those who don’t. But remember, there are many other benefits to exercise, including stress reduction and improved sleep. (I plan to bicep curl crafties and run my mouth off after too many bicep curls, does that count?). ■■ I’ll lose it in January: MYTH. Studies show most of us never lose our holiday padding,
probably because after giving up on New Year’s resolutions, we tend to gain back any weight we’ve lost. (Hoping to get some very stretchy tracksuit pants for Christmas . . . again . . .) ■■ It’s not too late to avoid gaining weight this holiday season: FACT: Commit to two simple goals: budget your carbs and drink more water. Both can help you avoid having to make that annual
New Year’s resolution to lose weight. (There’s water in beer, right?)
On a different note I do love me a good idea and the team at the Ashburton Trotting Club have come up with a belter, I reckon. Simon Adlam gave me a call during my Movember campaign and said the trotting club wants to donate some rides on the back of the mobile start for your fund-
raiser. He thought we’d get $50 for each one without any problem. Then Carl Markham from Methven called me and matched the deal. Simon was dead right, they sold like hotcakes. On the back of that success, the trotting club will sell a ride on the back of all of the mobile starts next year and donate the money to a local charity. What a buzz, up close to all that heavy breathing, sweating, yell-
ing and the smell of leather and that’s just the starter! Nothing turned out as bad as predicted By Heather du Plessis-Allan
I
f there’s a positive lesson from this year, it’s that nothing has turned out as bad as predicted. Take the quarterly GDP figures out this week. They were nowhere near as bad as expected. The Reserve Bank predicted an economic contraction in the September quarter of 7 per cent. The Treasury picked a drop of 6 per cent only a day before the real figure was released. That figure ended up being 3.7 per cent. That’s still awful. It’s the second-worst economic contraction the country’s experienced since records began 35 years ago. It represents a lot of closing businesses, extra debt taken on and individual heartbreaks. But it’s still a lot less of that than we were expecting. Then take the grim health forecasts. Only 12 weeks ago Covid modeller Shaun Hendy predicted 7000 deaths a year if we hit an 80 per cent vaccination rate. Even if we hit 90 per cent – which is where we are now – he forecast 1557 deaths. We’ve seen nowhere near that level of carnage. We’ve only re-
Covid modeller Shaun Hendy’s predictions were somewhat off. corded around 50 deaths. Again, that’s still sad. Every death represents a loss to a family, but it’s nowhere near the catastrophising we were sold. Partly, that’s because the gloomy predictions fail to account for the human ability to adapt and be brilliant. The GDP numbers weren’t as bad as forecast because business owners learned how to handle
lockdowns. They’d been through the first 2020 lockdown and second 2020 lockdown and the two February lockdowns. So when the big Auckland lockdown struck they took themselves online, set up click and collect, fired up the Zoom and started couriering again. The transport sector, for example, took a quarterly knock of 3.3 per cent in the first half of
this year’s Auckland lockdown. But back in that first lockdown of 2020, the knock to the sector was 27 per cent. That’s evidence of innovation and resilience. Hendy’s model was wrong because the vaccine was better than his headline numbers accounted for. He assumed the vaccine had medium efficacy. But actually, Pfizer’s brilliant employees managed to make something with high efficacy. And then Kiwis did their bit by getting jabbed at levels we had hoped for, but not really believed possible. But there is one thing that was actually worse than anyone could’ve predicted, and that was the uncertainty. Humans aren’t good with uncertainty. We’re better off knowing something bad is definitely going to happen than suspecting it might. Research published a few years ago found that people who were told they had a 50 per cent chance of getting an electric shock were more stressed and anxious than people told they were definitely getting an electric shock. That is why these last two years have been hard – because we really had no idea what to expect
next or how bad it could be. Omicron is a case in point. It’s created a panic disproportionate to its deadliness. As far as we know, the UK has only recorded one Omicron death so far, despite tens of thousands of cases. I suspect next year is going to be just as uncertain as the last two years. We’ll get our first winter wave of Covid and winter is when respiratory diseases are at their worst. The PM could u-turn on her commitment to reopen the borders to the world and leave more expats stranded and businesses here strapped for staff. We can’t be sure that 5.1 per cent annual inflation is just a temporary blip or something more prolonged and problematic. The coming year might yet throw a lot at us. But there are two things we can be sure of as we recharge ourselves this summer before going in for round three of the pandemic. The first is that we humans are brilliant and resilient, and we can and will make it through. This second is that there’s a good chance that whatever horror show they predict won’t be nearly as bad as they say.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To execute the fabulous thing you have in mind, you’ll have to free up your schedule. Coming up with the money will be far easier than coming up with the timing that works for everyone. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Some would have you believe they’ve a right to be a part of your life. But this is not how it works. To a large extent, you get to choose the people in your world. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): People generally don’t care about things until they are aware that they have a reason to. The reason may have been there all along, but it takes someone like you to point it out – probably, repeatedly. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You will be moved to shore up the uncomfortable discrepancy between how you see yourself and the reality you find yourself in. Start small. You might be surprised at the effectiveness of little changes. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): It’s someone’s job to sell you on an idea or product that is not in your best interest to buy. You’ve no need of this, even though they will attempt to manufacture one. Put up a wall by sticking to what matters. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): If your eyes are closed, you can be face to face with just the thing you’ve been searching for and still not find it. Do an awareness check on yourself. How awake are you? Strive for “wide.” LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Wherever possible, bring a problem back to its cause. Speak directly to the source. This will be both frightening and efficient. Summon your courage to confront the powers that be. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Many scan the conversation for arguing points to dig into, you have better luck listening up for possible common interests. Bonus: Trying to see another person’s point of view is just good practice. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): As for that person who keeps bringing you down, you’ll be inspired to react differently now. This will throw them off, break the pattern and change the whole dynamic. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): People will want to learn so much from you, but this is going to happen over a long period of time. You’re wise to be a little mysterious and give out one nugget of wisdom at a time. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Those who can’t seem to get along with others have the same problems with you. Good friends act like a good friend to all their friends – and the same is true of employees, bosses and romantic contenders. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): There is no how-to manual today. The most important thing is that you know what you’d like your desired outcome to be. Send that star to the high heaven to guide the journey.

Funding for hemp innovation New Government funding will help a hemp fibre company with Ashburton links to explore untapped opportunities – from soft flooring to food packaging that’s more environmentally sustainable. The Government is contributing $1.34 million through Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund (SFF Futures) to New Zealand Natural Fibres’ five-year research and development programme project. Christchurch-based NZNF is the only hemp fibre company in New Zealand that controls its own supply chain endto-end. The company is contributing a further $2 million in cash and in kind to the project. NZNF plans to use the funding to develop its hemp growing, processing and marketing capability to “go further, faster” towards taking a global leadership position in the development of industrial and consumer products made from hemp fibre, chief executive Colin McKenzie said. “We are very pleased to have received further government backing to continue our work with hemp fibre, which has huge potential to be part of the solution to some of the most crucial environmental challenges facing our planet today.” MPI’s director of investment programmes Steve Penno said that NZNF’s project aligns well with Fit for a Better World, the government’s food and fibre sector roadmap guiding New Zealand’s export-led recovery from Covid-19. “SFF Futures is a key part of our drive to offer transformational opportunities to boost the contribution of the primary sector and lead the way to a more sustainable economy. This project aims to do just that – by showcasing Kiwi innovation at its best. It promises to add considerable value to our hemp fibre industry, and potentially to our local and national economies.” McKenzie said NZNF will use the grant to develop its activities across four sep-
NZ Natural Fibres chief executive Colin McKenzie. arate workstreams over the next five years – hemp plant genetics, including sourcing and developing new varieties; on-farm production and agronomic development; product development and innovation; market and business development, including identifying and targeting new customers and sales channels. “We are the only hemp fibre company in New Zealand which controls its own supply chain end-to-end, from seed to sales and marketing of our proprietary products made from hemp fibre which we have processed at our own facility. “This puts us in a unique position to
scale up our operations and establish a place at the forefront of hemp fibre innovation globally.” NZNF is in the unique position of being able to leverage the capabilities of Ashburton-based agribusiness company Carrfields, which co-owns NZNF with partner Hemp NZ. Carrfields has well-established existing business divisions covering key parts of NZNF’s supply chain, including seed, agronomy and harvest machinery. In addition, NZNF’s existing yarn business (formerly known as NZ Yarn, a subsidiary of Carrfields Primary Wool), has
a broad international customer base including soft flooring manufacturers, which provides a strong existing market for NZNF. The latest SFF Futures grant means NZNF is now poised to invest in growing its operations across each of the four workstreams which the company identified as crucial to achieving its goals, McKenzie said. “We are extremely excited to have received government backing to invest in the development of hemp fibre-based products, as well as products made from blended wool and hemp fibres for consumer and industrial markets in New Zealand and overseas.” The SFF Futures grant follows NZNF’s initial grant, which enabled the company to develop sustainable technology and processes to produce fit-for-purpose hemp fibre from harvested stems, without the use of chemicals. This project is now complete, enabling a totally new industry in New Zealand, McKenzie said. “We are very positive about the future of New Zealand wool and hemp fibre products worldwide. Our latest SFF Futures grant paves the way for the development of an extensive portfolio of new product innovation.” Among the possible product applications, NZNF is exploring are hemp fibre and wool yarn blends for use in soft flooring and performance outdoor activewear. Non-woven products are also being developed and tested; including a natural hemp fibre-based material that could replace single-use plastic food packaging, as well as a hemp fibre replacement for synthetic geotextiles which are used to stabilise soil in infrastructure works. In the future, NZNF also plans to look at how hemp fibre could be used to produce a natural replacement for carbon composites, packaging and building materials, as well as in many other industrial applications.

Flood protection sought for all, not just a few Canterbury Federated Farmers presidents are alarmed to hear urban based regional councillors wildly claiming entire towns should be shifted to avoid flood protection costs. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark said councillors need to remember to focus on flood recovery and river management for all ratepayers, not just a few. “Proactive management of our flood protection works is essential for the wellbeing of our communities,” Clark said. During 2021, most of Canterbury has been challenged by flooding, with Christchurch and Banks Peninsula the most recent areas receiving heavy rain. During historic flooding in Mid Canterbury in late May, the Ashburton River broke its banks in several places, causing devastating damage to adjacent farmland, which was covered in shingle and tree debris. Despite an army of volunteers helping with the clean-up and government and ECan assistance, individual farmers face massive bills to return their farms to their previous state. “The Prime Minister told us when she visited after the worst of the flooding that we need to engage with Environment Canterbury. That we have done. Now we call on them to engage with us and govern for all residents, not just their own voter base,” Clark said. Risk of flooding and river breaches are nothing new and since the time of first settlement of Canterbury, residents have sought to contain the rivers while developing villages, towns, cities, lifestyle blocks

Federated Farmers’ South Canterbury president Greg Anderson said that as ECan councillors meet to debate the annual plan, it was timely to remind them that one of the key core responsibilities of the regional council is to protect all residents from natural hazards. “Some things in the annual plan are essential tasks, and some are ‘nice to haves’, so good quality priority setting is needed.”

Federated Farmers’ North Canterbury president Caroline Amyes said that while it was pleasing the council has set up a catchment committee to focus on flood recovery and river management, it was concerning that “some councillors are suggesting we need to move some of our towns and allow the rivers to run free”. “Now is not the time for such suggestions. Now is the time to govern for all residents,” Amyes said.
BCI appoints a new independent director Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation’s board has appointed a new independent director. Tony King will be replacing Jeremy Smith when he retires from his position at the March meeting after a tenure of six years. King has held a variety of roles as director and chairman over the last 18 years. He is chairman of MainPower, the lines company serving the largely rural area of North Canterbury. He is also a director of RBL Property Ltd – formerly Red Bus Ltd – and of his own consultancy firm Option One. King has held senior management positions as chief executive of Red Bus and Solid Energy. He has a particular interest in infrastructure and renewable energy, and a longstanding connection to farming through his wider family. As a co-operative company with a board made up of farmer shareholders and executive management, BCI sees great benefit to shareholders and wider stakeholders in bringing in an outside perspective, with strong commercial acumen and a wide range of skills and experience, chairwoman Jan Early said.

Rae takes aim at summer spoils Ruakaka trainer Kenny Rae typically heads to the South Island with a small team over the summer, but this year his hand has been forced somewhat by Covid-19 restrictions in his home region. Northland remains in the Covid-19 red traffic light setting, and as a result it has lost its upcoming meeting, adding to the frustration of the last few months for Rae, who has had to contend with regional lockdowns over the last few months. “It is absolutely ridiculous,” Rae said. “Trying to get through Auckland all the time and having those checkpoints and getting Covid tests all the time just became a nightmare, so I packed them up and did what I did last year. “Some of them have been down here since October. “Counting Eamonn Green’s two, we have got 10 here and 10 at home.” Rae, who trains in partnership with his daughter Krystal Williams-Tuhoro, will line up seven of those runners at Ashburton’s postponed meeting today. Perennial bridesmaid The Buffer will be looking to add a victory to their long line of runner-up results when they line-up in the Agraforum Growing Innovation (1400m) fresh-up. “He will stay here; he won’t go back home because he keeps running seconds,” Rae said. “Now the track is a Dead5 I have got more confidence, but 1400m still might be a bit of a query first-up. “If I knew they were going to call the races off (last week) I would have given him a trial at Riccarton.” Rae will also line up The Bouquet Slayer in the Hinds Ridge Farming (1400m), Bodyguard and On My Shoulders in the Merry Xmas Norm (1200m), On the Rivet in the Hygain Maiden Stayers Challenge Extra $2500 (2200m), Zelenski in the Richie McCrea Painters

I think he will go really well. “On The Rivet has been a bit unlucky with his rides and draws. I just want to win one race for the owner with him, then I have won with all three of the family, I have won with his two half-sisters. Meanwhile, stablemate Irish Girl’s summer preparation is starting to ramp up, with her first major target being the
Gr.3 Brighthill Farm Concorde Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie next month. “Irish Girl goes to the trials tomorrow (Tuesday) at Ellerslie and I will probably set her for the Concorde on Karaka Million night,” Rae said. Rae was aiming to have another contender at the Karaka Million meeting, however, Follow Your Dreams’ path towards the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) was curtailed by injury. “He got an infection in one back leg and then the Karaka Million mile was off the radar because of that, so we gelded him,” Rae said. “I would love to get him to Queensland sometime. “He will be ready in autumn. He has come back well.”

Locals in fine form at Rangiora Matt Markham A distinct Mid Canterbury flavour washed over the Rangiora Racecourse on Sunday, as the locals had a day out on the grass track at the North Canterbury venue. Local winners were aplenty during the day’s action, but few more popular than Sister’s Delight. The Michael Heenan-trained mare grabbed the sixth win of her career when dashing up the inside for in-form driver Sarah O’Reilly – capping off some good recent form from the diminutive daughter of Bettor’s Delight. She is raced by well-respected Methven identity Viv Barrett, who was on track to witness the victory. With six wins, 11 placings and close to $50,000 in stake earnings, Sister’s Delight’s value as a future broodmare continues to prosper. Early on in the programme there were a lot of smiling Mid Canterbury faces in the winners circle when Kyran won for Warren Stapleton and driver, Ricky May. The injury-plagued pacer is raced by Stapleton, his son Deane, Craig and Sam Ingold and Laurence and Justine Hanrahan. Hanrahan was the original trainer of the horse and qualified him to race, but injuries saw him transferred to the Stapleton barn, which is noted for being able to recuperate horses from injury. May took luck out of the equation early in the mobile event and found the front, and from there never looked back, dashing away for a strong win. The Stapletons also produced Major Purchase to finish third in the race. Leo O’Reilly also continued his good run of recent form, picking up a victory in the opening race of the day with the talented, but enigmatic, Mentalist for Chris McDowell. The trotter, who is raced by leading greyhound trainer Craig Roberts and his partner Angela Washington, had threatened to win a race for a long time but manners were always an issue. But not on Sunday, as he worked to the front for O’Reilly before taking a trail and boosting best up the lane to break through for the maiden win.

Sporting year in review – The ABC of it all Matt Markham
A
As the curtain on 2021 starts to fall we take a look back through the months of sporting achievements, results and stories that shaped the year that was with an ABC of Mid Canterbury sport for the year.
llenton cricket
It’s been a revival of sorts. And a successful one at that. It wasn’t that long ago, Allenton’s day’s as a senior cricketing club looked down and out, but the passion and dedication of a group of local Indian players has seen the club resurrect itself to play at the top level once again. Sure, there’s no Saturday senior competition to sink the teeth into, but this side has plied its trade in the Canterbury Country competition and then began this current season in the South Canterbury competition. They have a lot of pride and passion, both for the game and their club, and the effort to make the final of the Canterbury Country competition earlier in the year was noteworthy. Continued progression will see them continue to remain as a firm part of the Mid Canterbury cricketing landscape.
B
raden Currie
One of Mid Canterbury’s finest sporting products in the last decade, Currie’s star again continued to rise. In a year interrupted by a lack of international events due to the worldwide situation with Covid, the Methven born and raised multisport star still found his way to the
Methven super-athlete Braden Currie.

rest of the world against each other in head-to-head battles. Currie shone, smashing his race and picking up one of just a few victories for the Rest of the World team, showcasing that despite a tough season without much competition New Zealand is still a wonderful training ground, and Mid Canterbury can still produce an athlete worthy of being regarded as one of the best in the world.

years of the green machine doing battle on the hallowed rugby fields of the region. Easter 2021 was a wonderful weekend of re-acquaintance, reminiscing and celebrating. Then it ended with success. After a steady performance in the combined competition, a Watters Cup victory against the old foe Southern, 25-20, in a gripping contest that underlined all that is great about grass roots rugby in New Zealand. With good numbers, a strong team of people working behind the scenes with passion and dedication to the club and those around it, Celtic looks well set for another 100 years, and a fair few more victories in the most coveted of rugby prizes in Mid Canterbury.

Lake Hood skiers gain New Zealand selection Matt Markham Four members of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club will wear the silver fern of New Zealand next year. Brothers, Quinn and Jett Jansen along with Emily Milner and Diaz McKay, who all ski out of the Lake Hood-based club, have been named in New Zealand age group teams to compete in the Oz-Kiwi event, which will be held in Victoria in March of next year. It’s a good nod to the form of the quartet over the past few years that they’ve gained national selection to compete in one of the most hotly contested junior water-skiing event in the world. The Jansen brothers will compete in the Under 14 team, while
“
Milner and McKay, the latter of whom is based in Christchurch but skis for Lake Hood Water Ski Club, are a part of the Under 21 side. Eight skiers have been selected in the four age group teams for the competition, with two from each listed as reserves but still a part of the event. Ashburton locals have a proud record in the Oz-Kiwi event, with the Donaldson twins in recent years prominent figures in the national team, and now that looks set to continue for a number of years with this year’s squad members. The tournament sees athletes compete in three disciplines over the course of the event, slalom, trick-skiing and jump, with culminative scores kept in order to find winners. This year’s event will be held at the Albury and Wodonga Waterski Club in Victoria from March 3 through to March 6.

Logan McCorkindale on his way to winning the South Canterbury Open.
Double-header brings out the best Matt Markham A busy day at the Waireka Croquet Club in Ashburton last week saw two separate events taking place. Both the Windsor Richards and South Canterbury Open were held on December 11 and December 12, with good numbers competing in what were damp conditions for players and officials alike. The South Canterbury Open used six lawns and drew a strong field of competitors with Logan McCorkindale making full use of home track advantage to claim success. In order to win, the talented play-
er had to produce his best form, playing six three-hour games over the two days of play from which we went through unbeaten to claim the title. Graeme Simpson of the Aorangi club finished runner-up. While the South Canterbury Open was being played a good-sized field also lined up for the Windsor Richards for players within the 10-24 handicap range. By Sunday the drizzle that enveloped the lawns on Saturday had disappeared and players enjoyed good conditions for the final stages. Maurice Young made the trip north from the Ashbury club worth the while by taking overall honours, with Allenton’s Ann Sunbeam claiming the runner-up prize on a countback from Methven’s Helena Edy.
