On the lawn in the shadow of the Beehive, Ashburton grandmother Raewyn Chapman is making her stance. She’s been part of the controversial antimandate protest in Wellington from the start, getting uncomfortably close to the ugly clash with police early on. The nurse of 25 years, who lost her job at Ashburton Hospital because of her Covid-19 anti-vaccination stance, tells Daryl Holden why she feels the need to protest for the first time in her life. Story and protest site photos, P6-7. Plus, see an exclusive video on the Guardian’s Facebook page.

SHOP smart SHOP local MID CANTERBURY Where you’re always welcome Lili Haydon Glen Tane Parris has been a part of the Four Square family in Rakaia for over 13 years. Born in Christchurch, Parris has brought his 25 years of experience in the grocery business to Rakaia. “It’s a good life out here. You can walk down the street and not see anyone and not panic,” Parris said. Before he took over the Four Square on Elizabeth Avenue, he owned another one right around the corner. Rakaia has over 1000 residents and it’s growing, “enough to warrant a business,” according to Parris. Parris took over the other Four Square when the opportunity came up, and moved the store from being a dairy to a full-on rural supermarket. Parris is a firm believer in shopping locally. “Small businesses are the backbone of New Zealand,” he said. And what is more Kiwi than the Mr Four Square man, also known as “Cheeky Charlie” doing the thumb’s up. Four Square is ingrained in our Kiwi psyche, and no wonder, the brand has been around since 1929, but according to Parris they are still keeping it

A friendly place to shop,” Parris said. Since Covid Parris has even seen an increase in the customers coming in to the store from surrounding areas. “We’ve kept them. People
shop with their feet – if they don’t like somewhere, they will go elsewhere,” he said. Parris and his 11 part-time staff of all ages run the show. And the best thing about the business is: “It’s a social job,” Parris said. All the staff either know the customers or get to know them
after a few shopping trips, which is a rare occurrence these days. During his 25 years in the food industry, Parris has noticed the biggest change has been the technology. Last December Parris decided to install self-checkouts, “So people can get in and get out,”
he said. He has added his own iconic flare to the attractions at the shop by buying himself a green 1932 Ford Model Y car and he has even had the Four Square branding emblazoned on one its doors. “It fits in with the Four Square brand,” he said proudly.

Covid cases on the rise Jonathan Leask Case numbers in Mid Canterbury are expected to rise in the coming days, but officials are urging there is no need to panic. Ashburton College, Hampstead and Allenton schools have all reported positive cases while a hair salon in the Ashburton CBD has also confirmed an exposure event which made for a big line at the Covid testing centre at Ashburton Hospital yesterday. As the number of cases in the district begins to rise following the first cases being announced last week, Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the situation with case numbers is worrying, but no cause for panic. “It is definitely no time to panic. It’s under control,” Brown said. “We have been expecting it for some time. “Just keep up with mask use, scanning in, distancing where you can, and be ready for it if you do become Covid positive.” Case numbers are only confirmed to a DHB level, with 269 active cases in Canterbury, and 10 in South Canterbury, but several institutions have confirmed they are aware of cases.
Locations of interest As the case numbers increase, the community is anxious to know any potential locations of interest, however, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has advised that for some exposure events, they already know who was there. Contact tracers can identify everyone associated with that event, and anyone that needs
to isolate will be contacted directly. The MOH has stated that if there have been no, or few locations of interest published, it shows that contact tracers may have been able to identify the people that they need to. That means not all exposure events require a location of interest to be published.

Ashburton College principal, Ross Preece, confirmed a senior student had tested positive and he had informed the school community of its first case yesterday. Preece said the student has been isolating at home and working through the contact tracing process. As of Monday there were no college staff or other students deemed to be close contacts, he said. Allenton principal Bruce Tilby confirmed a pupil was a positive
Covid case. “All parents and caregivers at the school were advised [on Sunday] that there was a confirmed case and were kept up-to-date with developments. “All parents from the particular class where the child concerned is a student have been contacted and a number of children have been identified as close contacts. Those children will have a Covid test and are currently isolating at home.
All parents were advised that the school would be open yesterday and their children were able to come to school, unless informed otherwise. Hampstead School also confirmed a positive test result yesterday morning of a pupil who had been absent from school since February 15. As a precaution the pupils from the class were sent home yesterday to await an update. All the schools have worked
closely with the Ministry of Education and followed the relevant education and health procedures. Tanglez Hair Studio staff were exposed to a Covid positive case last week and all its staff except one are isolating at home. If Covid sweeps through the community, Brown said “we will come out the other side pretty good because we have taken all the precautions”, with Canterbury having the highest rate of vaccinations in the country.
Mid Canterbury Choir delays first concert of year Malcolm Hopwood The Omicron outbreak has given the red light to Mid Canterbury Choir’s concert to be held at St
Stephen’s Church in Ashburton. The 40-member choir was preparing to perform Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass on April with guest conductor, Martin Setchell, and three University of Canterbury soloists. Choir manager, Carol Gunn, said it’s “hard to do all the work and then have to postpone or cancel.”
The choir was forced to pigeonhole the concert, as red light’s hundred-person limit would cut its revenue too low. The St Cecilia Mass concert is their third performance to be disrupted by Covid in the past two years. In the pre-pandemic era, the choir often performed three concerts and met weekly for rehearsal.
It has been performing together since 2002 but Gunn explained, in the past two years, rehearsals have been very intermittent. “We desperately miss singing together,” Gunn said. Under the red traffic light setting, she said the choir is required to practise outdoors wearing masks with one metre
spacing, making it too difficult for them. “We’re holding out for orange, then we’ll start practising,” she said. “We’re becoming used to constant cancellations.” The choir hopes to reschedule their Ashburton concert and perform later this year in August or September, depending on traffic light levels.

SHOP smart SHOP local MID CANTERBURY Farmers an essential part of the Luisetti business Malcolm Hopwood Luisetti sells “seeds to feed the world”. For three generations, the Luisetti family has fed the world with seeds from Canterbury, initially through its North Canterbury headquarters, but latterly from its massive two-hectare site in Ashburton. In 2009, Luisetti purchased Stapleton’s Seed Cleaning and established its business in Mid Canterbury. “As a seed cleaning company this is where we should always be,” said managing director, Edward Luisetti. “We had capacity restraints in Rangiora and needed somewhere bigger.” The Ashburton plant performs the majority of seed

Southern Hemisphere, established last year. “We’re going to grow and it’s been installed to improve efficiencies and meet demand and shipping deadlines,” he explained. “We contract Canterbury farmers to grow the seed, agronomists provide husbanding services, truck it to our seed cleaning plant in Ashburton where it’s processed, packed and exported,” he said. “We’re unique in that we do the whole process.” Annually, Luisetti exports thousands of tonnes of seed to Europe, America, Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Europe is its biggest export market for ryegrass, clover, turf grass, radish and peas. “Our seeds are a critical link
Luisetti commercial manager, Jon Bond (left) and managing director, Edward Luisetti, at the entrance to the company’s Ashburton operations. with overseas seed companies,” Luisetti said. He explains the world relies on local farmers and seed companies to provide significant quantities of seed to plant around the world and grow grain. “Mid Canterbury has a suitable climate and soil conditions, reliable irrigation and farmers who are at the top of their game,” he said. In addition, Luisetti supplies many of the leading milling wheat varieties to Christchurch which are plant-
ed, grown and harvested for flour that appears on our supermarket shelves as bread. The Luisetti company was first established in 1920 and Edward continues the family dynasty, employing 60 staff in Rangiora and Ashburton. “It’s a family-owned business and we want it to remain that way,” he said. About 75 per cent of their seed is grown by local farmers who Luisetti has been dealing with for up to nine decades. Sixty per cent is exported, with the rest sold within New Zealand. While the company’s financial profit from last year is confidential, he did acknowledge “turnover is in the many millions”. With reference to Shop Local, Edward Luisetti said “local farmers are an integral part of our process. We couldn’t work without them.” “The farming community is the lifeblood of Mid Canterbury’s economy and Ashburton district punches above its weight in earning export dollars.” Luisetti sponsors the Canterbury country rugby competition with teams from Mid Canterbury, Ellesmere and North Canterbury competing for the Luisetti Seeds Cup. “Rugby clubs and the local school are the heart of the agricultural community, and our business identifies with them,” he said. “We also provide jobs and security for our Ashburton employees. “The role that Luisetti plays, helps to keep the community functioning.”

Don’t drive Kia, you’ll go before the beak Malcolm Hopwood A kea holding a Kia car ring is cute. It’s meant to be cute. It’s the largest painting by far in the Ashburton Society of Arts opening exhibition for 2022. Former Ashburton artist, Georgette Thompson, who now lives in Christchurch is guest artist and her love of wildlife is expressed through her paintings of keas, penguins and a tuatara. When the exhibition opened on Sunday more than 50 paintings, craft work, greeting cards and notebooks went on display and on sale. “We want to fill the walls with art works from members. Most are recent landscapes, florals and abstracts, but there are a few that artists want to display again,” convenor, Ngaio McKee said. “The public is invited to come along, view and purchase.” A particular attraction is the children’s book, A Change Is Gonna Come, about preserving the local habitat of the bittern. It was written by Angela Cushnie and illustrated by society patron, Barbara Jaine.

Ashburton’s Marlese Schoonderbeek has been awarded Zonta’s Young Women in Public Affairs Award. The talented first-year architecture student has been actively involved in the Ashburton College community and wider Ashburton community making her a perfect recipient for Zonta’s award. “The Young Women in Public Affairs Award (YWPA) programme recognises young women for their demonstrated leadership skills, commitment to public service and civic causes and encourages them to continue their participation in public and political life,” Terrie Hunt from Zonta Ashburton said. “Marlese has been actively involved in leadership activities at Ashburton College as a reading mentor, peer support leader, house executive representative, and house co-captain. “[She] has also been an advocate for young girls through her coaching and by presenting to community groups such as Rotary.” Schoonderbeek is quietly confident in her approach to tasks and demonstrates a strong determination to achieve her goals. She has chosen to study architecture, which has previously been a male-dominated profession, and hopes to be able to encourage other young women to enter the field.

Ashburton woman helps hold the Wellington protest line She’s a mother and a grandmother – and complaining really isn’t in her nature. But the anti-mandate protest and occupation of the Parliament grounds is different for Ashburton’s Raewyn Chapman. The 67-year-old has been at the protest for the full two weeks. She tells Daryl Holden about her protest experience and Covid-19 antivaccination stance, which has cost her friends and a 25-year nursing career. Editor
Q
What’s motivated you to be involved in the anti-mandate protest at Parliament? Are you normally someone who protests about things? No. I’ve never protested before but I’m very strong against mandates and the destruction it’s all causing. What destruction? The loss of jobs, families and friends split and in conflict. Discrimination between jabbed and unjabbed from both sides. Has the protest been worth it for you personally? Yes, but with a mix of emotions. I feel very proud to be part of making history though. Explain your mix of emotions? (I have been) happy, scared, frustrated, proud and angry. When and why were you scared? Pretty much just all day on the Thursday (third day of protest) holding the line (when police and protesters clashed in ugly scenes). That was stressful, hard and tiring. Seeing the brutality and worrying that that may happen to me also. What brutality did you see? People being arrested for no reason, not provoking at all. One (protester) being pulled out of the crowd by the hair, faces being pushed into the ground with police putting their knees on their faces, being dragged along the ground roughly. Saw some obviously with skin broken as could see blood. Did you think this is not for me, it is too risky? What has kept you there day after day? My strong stand against the mandates. I want them gone and we need to keep the numbers up to have any chance at winning. What would be a win for you and your fellow protestors? To stop the mandates. No (vaccine) passports, no masks and freedom of choice, re: the jab. Do you think that will ever happen while the protestors are camped at Parliament with vehicles parked illegally? Who knows but we are ever hopeful. And we have the numbers that say they’re not leaving until they stop the mandates. And I am one of them. What if you are forced to leave, if police and the authorities took a tougher approach? Would it be worth putting yourself at risk if that

Explain what voluntary tasks you do? Picking up rubbish, (helping at) first aid tent, lost children’s tent. It sounds quite organised. But do you think it is right that kids are involved? Yes, so long as the parents stay responsible, which unfortunately some aren’t. What are the unresponsible parents doing? (There are) kids wandering around at night while parents are drinking. Not a good look. Does that not make you question your participation? Not really. I do get annoyed when I see that behaviour but that’s just a minority. Most of us are doing the right thing. What do your family and friends think about your involvement, especially with uncertainty about how it may end? My daughters worry for my safety but one of them has gotten into following it online out of interest. I have a sister and only a few friends that support and encourage me but have lost some friends through not being jabbed, so I guess they wouldn’t agree to what I’m doing. And why not get jabbed, being someone who would have great understanding of following medical science for all sorts of vaccinations? Well, they’re not following medical science. It’s still experimental so I’m not prepared to be part of the experiment. And there’s already way too many deaths and injuries related to the jab. It’s clearly NOT about our health. Governments are not listening to advice or evidence from doctors and scientists around the world that are speaking up.

‘Harvest from hell’ hits home The ‘harvest from hell’ being experienced by Mid Canterbury’s arable farmers this summer will have a detrimental effect on Ashburton’s economy, says Federated Farmers (Feds) provincial president David Clark. “With farmers having much less to spend, this will impact on local businesses, as well as grain and seed processing and marketing companies,” he said. The “devastating” harvest would “have a massive flow-on effect” from the loss of production on farms but also the reduction of throughput through the seed stores and the community in general. “And with little to no straw being produced, this will impact on the dairy farmers next winter,” he said. In a Feds newsletter on Friday, arable industry chairperson Colin Hurst, who farms south of Ashburton, said on his 700ha farm he estimated a $60,000 loss from ruined pea crops and perhaps $60,000 in other losses. “Canterbury wheat crops are turning black. We were already

paddocks have had to be left there for up to a month, in some cases. During the weeks there were patches of fine weather across Canterbury, only for more rain to fall and so farmers had to start the
clock again on drying. Yields and quality will suffer.” Clark said the flow-on effects to individual farmers and then to processing and marketing companies would be significant. That would have an impact on the amount of money farmers would have to spend in Ashburton, he said. “But the responsible business owner cuts their cloth to what can be done. There will be cutbacks by farmers – that’s a responsible business. “It’s just incredibly disappointing to the arable industry to have had this harvest and it’s not over yet. We may yet get some fine weather, but the damage is done now. “It is interesting to reflect on why there is so much dairying in Mid Canterbury. It is a much simpler system (than arable) with much less weather risk. For the naysayers that criticise how much dairying there is, I’m sure for a lot of arable farmers in Mid Canterbury this season is enough to tip them over the edge towards dairying.”

Zhybale now calls NZ home Pat Deavoll A Tourism New Zealand advertisement and a prompt from a friend brought Zhybale (Zy-beel) Castil out from the Philippines to work in the dairy industry nine years ago. She has never looked back and is now assistant manager on Clearview Align farm, where she lives with her husband and two children who are both at Mount Hutt College in Methven. “I had a classmate from university working on a dairy farm in New Zealand and they asked me if I was interested,” Zhybale said. “I said I would give it a shot, so they told me what to prepare and an agency helped me get a position. “Because my degree was in veterinary medicine, I had some experience in dairy animals, but also with small animals. “I worked for the council in the Veterinary Services Department in the Philippines and once I knew I was going to be working in the dairy industry I started to focus more on dairy animals.”
Dairy assistant manager for Align Farms Zhybale Castil has embraced her life in New Zealand and can’t see herself and her family living anywhere else. PHOTO SUPPLIED Now dairy is her life, she said. She loves everything about her job. Firstly, it is in line with her
university qualification. “And I like the environment – you must deal with the animals,
and you see nature. Every morning I see the sunrise – the most beautiful thing that I always look
forward to. “And of course, I love the cows,” she said. As an assistant manager, she is involved with milking, planning pasture management, animal health, and some pest control. She has been in the position for a year. Her workmates are mainly Filipino and most of them have been at Clearview for many years – some longer than the nine years she has been there. We are a close-knit Filipino community, she said. And does she want to stay in New Zealand? Most definitely. “We are supposed to apply for our resident’s visa next week. So far, we’ve been here on working visas. We don’t go back to the Philippines that often – we’ve been twice. It’s just too expensive to get all the family back there, Zhybale said. “Anyway, New Zealand is my dream country. I saw pictures of it in an ad and wondered if it could be true that the scenery could be so beautiful. It was true.” Zhybale plans to be in the dairy industry for a while. I’m planning a career progression, she said. “We are looking for that. The dairy industry offers great opportunities if you work hard.”
Erratic start to honey season Pat Deavoll The honey harvest is off to a slow start for Mid Canterbury beekeepers this summer, with some reporting to an Apiculture NZ regional roundup that the season was running three weeks late. Apiculture NZ CEO Karin Kos said rain and low temperatures
in December meant early clover crops were a washout, although the rain was welcome in the drier parts of the region. “However, since New Year and with a warm January clover has been producing well as has bush honey, so there has been a good pickup in activity, although I have heard that honey yields in South Canterbury have been lower than expected,” Kos said. Grant Rawson of Ardgowan Apiaries said the harvest was “not bad” – it was going to be above average. But with the weather
being “up and down” the honey harvest season was dragging out. “It started with a hiss and a roar, but it has been up and down with the weather ever since. It’s getting quite dry now – if it doesn’t rain the season won’t continue. “We are just pasture honey and I’m running around 700 hives. My prediction is that we’ll get around 20 kilograms per hive which put us just above average for the season,” Rawson said. Christchurch buyer John Hartnell of Hartnell and Associates Ltd said it was correct that there
had been a very slow start to the season. “The weather continues to have an impact: bees locked up in the hive eat the stores they have leaving little surplus for the beekeeper. “The market remains tight, export tonnages are rising but they are well behind the national crop, and the stockpile is growing, particularly manuka where some beekeepers are sitting on up to three years stock,” he said. “Clover stocks are in better shape with good demand the last
two years. Prices though have been in a fairly tight band, any price movement will be minor as without export competition the buying pool is limited. “Manuka was the winner at the onset of Covid for the same reasons as deer velvet (which is seen as a health benefit in some Asian countries) but that has slowed in my view. “Sales by volume are up, but the industry needs a major increase in demand or a crop failure over the next two years to rebalance stock versus the market.”

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sometimes, people are oblivious because they lack the courage it takes to notice what needs fixing and do something about it. You’re brave in this regard. Once you see what’s right, you have to act. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Before virtual reality and meditation apps existed, Carl Jung had the counterintuitive statement, “Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside awakes.” You’ll have a moment of living the statement. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You have a stock of polite options for the usual situations. When someone insists on your real opinion, as they will today, you could be thrown for a loop. Levity and brevity are the magic pairing. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Since you feel more comfortable when you know the names and main details of the people you deal with, it’s worth briefing yourself before the interaction. Time taken to bone up on social niceties will be well-spent.

Community honour well deserved F
or hundreds of Ashburton school kids, she’s probably their happy meal queen. She’s Jo Taylor, who’s the brains behind the voluntary-run Kai for Kids free school lunch programme, which fills such a vital community role. And that’s why Taylor has been recognised by being named the inaugural winner of the Ashburton Guardian’s Mid Cantabrian of the Year. We announced her honour in Saturday’s Guardian and the reaction to it has been overwhelmingly positive on two fronts. Firstly, because we recognised Taylor and also because we again displayed leadership by instigating such a celebration of one of our community stars. And it’ll be an annual award that we’ll dish out. It’s an extension of our successful shop and love local campaign and it’ll be a
Daryl Holden chance for all of us to acknowledge a shining light, someone who has gone above and beyond for you, for me, for all of us. And that’s Taylor to a tee. She’s the driving force behind the hugely successful free lunch service, which provides nutritious food to school children in areas that need it the most. Taylor and her team make over 600 meals a day during the terms, with Netherby, Hampstead, Chertsey, Borough and Hinds schools being joined by the Merle Leask Kindergarten. The programme started in July 2020 and is based out of the
Ashburton Racecourse kitchen, with its establishment coming when one of Taylor’s own children came home from school and told her they were sharing their food with someone who had no lunch. As simple as that.

a huge privilege and very humbling “ It’s to have parents’ trust that I can provide a lunchtime service.
Fortunately, Taylor was caring enough, and had the business and organisational skills, to turn that worry into a vital community programme. Taylor, being a mother of five, knows the pressures placed on families and has said that her Kai team “take the burden off
Taylor and her team can do just that.
Making her stance Raewyn Chapman, on our front page today, is perhaps an unusual face of the controversial anti-mandate protest in Wellington.
The Ashburton woman, at 67, is probably older than most of the 1000-odd protesters, who have turned the Parliament grounds in Wellington into something of a camp site. It’s an occupation that’s now stretched to 14 days and with little sign of ending. Even Chapman, who says she’s never protested against anything in her life until now, explains on page six that she’s in it for the long haul. Her anti-vaccination stance saw her lose her job as an Ashburton Hospital nurse. It’s also cost her friends, but Chapman won’t waver. It’s as personal as it gets. Let’s just hope her protest, and that of all of those on the Parliament grounds, end their stay in a sensible way with no violence or mass arrests. Everyone would surely want that.

Hopping off the fence Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
I
have to date sat firmly on the fence when it comes to Covid, vaccinations and mandates on the wireless. Reporting the facts and figures on the subjects. My mantra has always been ‘I don’t care what side of the fence you sit on. You do you and don’t jam that down everyone else’s throat’. I’m trying hard to stick to that mantra as well, but I would like to run some facts, figures and questions by you. First though I would like to share the thoughts of some of my family. My uncle, a former lieutenant colonel in the army, who lives in America and never pulls any punches said: “The Chinese just pulled off the biggest biowarfare and psyops operation imaginable. Now you have kids scared of bugs, brainwashed by media that vaccines are the greatest thing since sliced bread when they don’t work! NB the Queen! “Children’s education has suffered, but on the plus side parents found out what the kids were being taught and don’t like it. As a result, home schooling is growing like topsy! My brother said: “For me it’s the blind adherence to government directive which is alarming. We were all happy for the govt to manipulate our health to prevent the health system being overwhelmed. “But that’s backwards, the govt should be manipulating the health system to suit the needs of the population. I didn’t get vaccinated against the virus, I got vaccinated against social leprosy. “I’ve said it before, I was
onboard till the vaccine became available, then it should have been a personal health decision.” I am watching with interest what happens in Denmark, because they consider themselves well vaxxed up (and they are only around 85 per cent) they have opened up completely. No masks, no mandates and no daily number reporting (like our 1pm updates). Last week they were getting 18,000 cases a day, but had zero people in ICU in Copenhagen Hospital. On Sunday they had 24,000 new cases added to the total active cases number of 652,597. Of those 40 were in a serious condition. Now I’m no whizz kid when
it comes to maths, but I’m sure that’s less than .001 per cent. The Oxford Dictionary definition of vaccine is ‘a substance that is put into the blood and that protects the body from a disease’. This one didn’t protect the Queen, did it? (Editor: The Covid vaccination doesn’t necessarily stop you from getting the virus, but it gives you a much better chance of fighting it off and surviving and passing it on to others). No, I’m not anti-vax, I got jabbed to keep my job and provide for my family and because Jacinda said we should do it for a “Normal Summer”. Those ads have certainly disappeared from the telly eh? Jacinda’s other message was
“be kind”. Is it kind that a person has to hunger strike before being allowed to visit his dying father? I think the Government did a great job initially (possibly the best in the world) of protecting us against the early and nasty strains of Covid but now we are vaxxed up, I wonder if it’s time for a rethink. Barbara checked out her nooks and crannies Malcolm Hopwood When Barbara Jaine looked under beds and into wardrobes she found art work. It’s not the usual place to find treasures, but she discovered long lost paintings she’d completed that have formed a Now And Then Exhibition at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. Jaine, the patron of the Ashburton Society of Arts, is exhibiting 28 paintings that include landscape, floral and other subjects. “Now” refers to her current
art work and “then” to those rediscovered paintings from the spare bedroom. As well as her exhibition, which runs from February 4 to March 4, Barbara is a children’s illustrator and a book she’s illustrated, A Change Is Gonna Come, is on display at the Ashburton Society of Arts in Short Street. The book, about conserving the bittern’s habitat, was released in 2020, and written by author, Angela Cushnie. The book and other paintings by Barbara Jaine are part of the society of arts’ first exhibition which was launched on Sunday and runs until March 13. If anything it proves she has plenty of wardrobes and space under her beds.
Barbara Jaine displays her painting entitled Evening Light at Lake Tekapo.

Sapling Stakes, Hambletonian shifted to new race dates Matt Markham Harness racing returns to the Ashburton Raceway this weekend, but the Ashburton Trotting Club’s annual February meeting is a little different to the past. The meeting has traditionally hosted both the time-honoured Sapling Stakes for the two-yearold pacers, and also the Hambletonian Classic for the three-yearold trotters, but both races have been relocated to other points in the season. This has come about from a change in racing season by Harness Racing New Zealand, which has seen the season shift from its August to July timeframe to January to December. That’s brought about a major reshuffle and change in direction for many of the major harness racing events held in New Zealand over the old season – and a good majority are this year set to be held on different dates for the first time. In trying to achieve a more centralised racing calendar in which horses can campaign in various parts of the country for extended parts of the year, the focus is now more directed towards ensuring there is a breadth of opportunities available for horses of cer-
tain age groups and classes at the same time in the same region. And from an Ashburton point of view, the removal of the Hambletonian and the Sapling Stakes from the meeting scheduled this week will further enhance other meetings during the season – especially the traditional Ashburton Flying Stakes Day on Labour Monday in October. The Hambletonian will now be held at the meeting – adding a further black-type feature race to a day that already includes the Ashburton Flying Stakes for the open class pacers, and the Ashburton Trotters’ Flying Sprint for the similarly classed square gaiters. The New Zealand Sires’ Stakes Sophomore Classic for the threeyear-old male pacers will also be held at that meeting. Those four races will carry almost $200,000 worth of stake money alone. The Sapling Stakes has been shifted to the club’s June meeting, and is one of only two feature races on the calendar for the month. The other, is a new race to be hosted by the Ashburton Trotting Club, dubbed the Helen Pope Stakes for the two-year-old pacing fillies, and will carry a stake of $30,000. The Sapling Stakes will be a Group 2 race with a $50,000 stake attached to it. While the loss of the two key races from this weekend leaves

a massive hole in the Ashburton programme, there will still be a two-year-old race for the colts and geldings. A new addition to the meeting however is a Free-For-All pace which sees the club, for one race
only, revert back to the one-mile distance which the club is internationally recognised for. A $20,000 event, the race also carries the promise of a $5000 bonus to the winner if the race is paced in better than one minute

Drive on to bring new colts to the game
Matt Markham
Matt Markham The changing face of rugby, and life in general, is forcing a rethink in the way colts rugby operates in Mid Canterbury. And those charged with growing the game at that level are having to think a little more outside the square to try and get players, both new and old, back into the boots and out onto the paddock. One of the more traditional grades of rugby around the country, Colts is for players aged 21 years and under, and is seen as the natural pathway from age group or school rugby before taking the next step into Senior or Senior B sides. What was once a flourishing competition here locally, with
Colts muster days Saturday, February 26 – 12 noon Friday, March 4 – 7pm Players will go in the draw to win a $250 voucher and any new players that bring a new player along with them will receive a Crusaders ticket for them and their mate.

up to a dozen teams at times, has dwindled over recent years, and last season just two sides were put together from Mid Canterbury. But MCRFU rugby development officer, James McLeod, is hoping to change that this year. “Ideally I’d like to think we could get another team off the ground, which would be fantastic,” he said. McLeod believes the numbers are out there, but it’s trying to make it a little more appealing to players who are a lot more time-sensitive these days that was the biggest challenge. “You’re no longer looking at the traditional set up of train Tuesday and Thursday night and then play on a Saturday, it just doesn’t work as well as it once did. “People are working weekends now, they haven’t got as much time as what they once
The push is on to try and attract new players to Colts rugby this season. might have had and it’s had a flow-on impact on sports.” The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, in conjunction with neighbouring unions, are looking into the prospect of playing some night rugby matches in the colts grade this year, which might open the door for some new players to come in and join up. And the incentives are being put in place to try and lure players in. Mid Canterbury Rugby will hold two muster sessions over the next fortnight for potential players in the colts grade this season, and over the weekend they announced some initiatives to try and open the doors. All players who attend the muster days will go into a draw to win a $250 voucher, and all players who bring along a
mate will pick up a ticket to a Crusaders home match for them and their mate. “It’s just something little to try and see if can help us attract some new players along,” McLeod said. With numbers at this stage looking stagnant and around the same as last season, McLeod said the push was on to see if they could bring together an extra team for 2022. “We’ll know a lot more after the first muster session, then we’ll know how much work we have to do if we are to get this extra team up and running.” The first session will be held this Saturday, February 26 at 12 noon, and then the second session on Friday, March 4 at 7pm – both sessions will be held at the Ashburton Showgrounds with food and refreshments provided.
Weekend rain has again impacted on the bowling greens of Mid Canterbury. Play at the pointy end of the Sub Centre Champion of Champions Fours had to be halted part way through the finals on the Saturday, when the wet and windy southerly struck Methven where play was being conducted. The majority of the day’s play had been completed – but the finals in the senior men’s and senior women’s competitions were still being played, with both matches halted, and leaving the battle for another day. It follows on from major disruptions last weekend, when the weather caused havoc on the annual Prestige and Gala Cup events – the pinnacle of interclub bowls in Mid Canterbury. The qualifying stage of the annual Lowry Cup men’s singles was also postponed due to the weather, with greens under water and the Under 75s tournament set down for last Monday was also postponed. With time running out for the season, there’s a real rush on to squeeze events into a very busy calendar. No dates have been confirmed to replace the Lowry Cup, although the post-section stage of the tournament was to be held this weekend. The same situation is also faced for the final of Women’s Prestige between Allenton and Ashburton. This weekend will see another Sub Centre event held, with the Champion of Champions Triples set to be held at Allenton on Sunday. A day where bowlers around the district will be hoping the rain stays away.
Feutz reigns supreme on court Matt Markham Holly-Jayne Feutz is the Queen of Canterbury tennis in her age group. The Ashburton College student was part of the small group of local players who competed at Christchurch’s Wilding Park early last week in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Senior Tennis championships. And in a continued run of success and great results for local players taking on major tournaments away from Mid Canterbury, Feutz walked away a champion – taking out the Year 11 Girls’ Singles title. Ranked the second seed in the competition, Feutz breezed her way through the early stages of the 16-player competition to work her way into the final, against the No.3 seed, Alex Wylie. She made light work of the challenge, though, winning the final in straight sets 6-3 6-3 to be crowned champion.
She then teamed up with Libby Feutz in the doubles of the same age category, and although the pair won their second match in the round robin that was their lot for the event finishing fourth overall. Jake Parsons also turned in a fine effort in the blue and red of Ashburton College, finishing runner-up in the Year 11 Singles event. His achievement was noteworthy as he’ll be able to return to the same event in 2023. as he stepped out of his own age group to compete this year. Parsons had a tough battle in the semi-final, going to a tiebreak, before he took on No.1 seed Ej Gonzaga in the final. He pushed the competition favourite hard in the first set, but lost 5-7, and Gonzaga made light work of the second winning 6-0 to take the final. Jack Ellis and Drew Gilbert combined to finish runner-up in the Year 11 Boys’ Doubles, winning two of their three matches in the round robin format, while Ollie Bubb and Parsons finished in a tie for third in the Year 12-13 Doubles.

Matt Markham A decision two years ago to abandon all that was known and step into unfamiliar territory paid dividends for Ashburton’s Technical Cricket Club on Sunday in Timaru, as they became South Canterbury Cricket champions. With the loss of Saturday afternoon senior cricket a few years back now locally, the club’s senior side – the Tech Stags – were forced to think outside of the confines of Mid Canterbury if they were to get their weekly cricket fix during the summer months. The journey started heading north, in the Canterbury Country competition, but still a desire burned to play a more competitive level of cricket, so the club elected to chase the riches south of the border and step into the South Canterbury fold and compete for their showpiece trophy – the Tweedy Cup. And on Sunday, two years after they broke into the South Canterbury scene, the Stags brought it home, winning the season’s traditional title for the longer format of the game, beating defending champions Pleasant Point by six wickets on Timaru’s Aorangi Oval. And for one of the side’s elder statesmen, Jason Morrison, it justified the hours of discussion around where the side best fit going forward. “We played in the Canterbury Country competition for a couple of years, but we felt we wanted something a little more

competitive, so we decided to go to South Canterbury, and we found what we wanted there,” he said. “It’s a good competition with some really handy sides and some good players, so you’re tested every week, and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it really.” Morrison, who is believed to have played over 300 senior matches for the Tech side in a career that’s spanned over almost two decades, said the club focused in on building a strong nucleus of a team and working towards their goal of winning the competition.
“We learnt a lot in our first season playing down there – stepping into the 50 over format and playing with the white ball meant there needed to be a bit of a change in mindset in how we approached the game. “Last year we thought we gave ourselves a chance to win it, but we didn’t quite grab it so coming back this season has always been about working towards the weekend. “So, to get to the final and achieve it by winning is a huge result, not just for the team, but for the club as well.”
Morrison said that not having a local competition was extremely disappointing, but the fact that teams like Tech – and Allenton – could stretch themselves outside of the district and play elsewhere was a blessing as there was still a group of players around the district who are keen on playing the more serious version of the game. As champions, the pressure now goes onto Tech to step back into the fray next season and repeat the dose, and while the celebrations went long into Monday, there’s already a desire to make it back-toback titles among the team in the 20222023 season.
Bowlers tighten the screws and set the platform for victory Matt Markham Cricket is one of those fickle sports where one moment can change the entire course of a match. That one breakthrough wicket that leads to a batting collapse; that one cleanly struck boundary that sets a batsman off and changes the course of the innings – they’re both plentiful and frequent. There were plenty of moments for the Tech Stags on Sunday in their six-wicket win over Pleasant Point, but few were probably as important as a moment that occurred on the same ground 24 hours earlier – a moment that ensured that they received a chance at playing for silverware. In Saturday’s major semi-final, against Temuka, the Stags were in big trouble. They’d batted first, but in doing so failed to make it to 100 runs before they were rolled.
A paltry total for a semi-final, and one which Tech may have struggled to defend if Temuka put their heads down and batted for a bit of time. But a moment came that changed it all; the heavens opened up, and it rained. It led to the match being abandoned, and Tech, as the higher qualifier, advanced through to Sunday’s final. So, not only was there a final to prepare for, but a mindset change that needed to happen with the bat when it came to returning to Aorangi Oval on Sunday to face Pleasant Point. Perhaps luckily, the batting jitters were removed when the defending champions won the toss and elected to bat themselves. That put the Stags’ bowlers to work, and work they did. Beautifully. The Point line-up is top-heavy with some of South Canterbury’s best players anchored into their top five, so wickets early and wickets at a decent rate were always going to be key to getting on top. Alex Hooper set the ball rolling
for Tech from the outset. He had Matt Brown caught behind by Callum Gallagher on the first ball of the innings. It was a dream start – and a sign of things to come as Tech set about working their way through the Point line-up in a fine display of bowling. At the other end, Richard Print snared the second opener in his first over to see Pleasant Point in trouble early at 13-2 after two overs. That brought twin brothers, and the competition’s two leading run-scorers, Liam and Adam Beck to the middle. Harry Jones had Liam out 10 overs later with the pair having added 30 more runs to the total, and from there wickets fell frequently, but Adam remained rock solid at the other end. Runs were hard to come by though. Print, Jones, Ryan Bell and Bevan Ravenscroft all went for less than three runs an over for their 10 overs for the match, and by the time the 50 over mark was
reached, Pleasant Point had 142 runs next to their name, with Beck still there on 66 not out, having faced 152 deliveries. Hooper ended with 3-49 off his 10 overs, while both Print and
Ravenscroft grabbed two wickets each. 142 was a niggly enough total to chase. Jason Morrison fell at the start of the second over, but a solid stand between Sam Clark (40) and Ryan Bell (9) ensured there was no early collapse. When Bell was eventually clean-bowled, Des Kruger walked to the middle, and set about ensuring victory for his side. He batted long and patiently, adding 58 runs with Clark and then 51 runs with Will McKee (23) to work his way through to 52 not out, before watching from the other end as Matt Tait hit the winning runs off his first ball to win the match, and launch the Stags into the history books.
After watching his bowlers produce a stunningly miserly performance, Des Kruger came up with a patient half-century to seal a superb victory for the Stags.

Cam rules around Grahams Road After last week’s cancelled event the Tinwald Cycling Club got back on track, contesting the Netherby Meats, 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday. Leading into the final 3km it was anyone’s race with the break riders, second to last group away, hitting the front. Cam Alexander timed his sprint to perfection to hit the lead in the shadow of the line and hold on to claim the victory. Tony Ward produced his trademark tough ride to secure second place. Third placegetter Mike Pearce continues to impress. He led out the sprint strongly, and held on for the final podium position. Kristine Marriott, fresh from a solid week of training, was hot on their tails in fourth. Sam Barltrop, Steve Caldwell and Dave Knight ensured a grandstand finish, rounding out the top six. Scratch marker Jordan Gilmore rode the course in 65.39 to claim fastest time honours. Co-markers Kyle Gray and Glen Gould recorded second and third times. The juniors and division 2 contested an 18km handicap event. Eliza McKenzie put her recent great track form to good use, riding strongly to find the front and hold on for the win. Eliza’s effort also saw her record the fastest time, riding the distance in 32.14. Charlotte Neal again showed her fight, recording second place

Eight teams will contest the second year of Mixed Summer Basketball which begins tonight. After a successful inaugural season last year, Basketball Mid Canterbury have brought back the competition for another season at the Oxford Street Basketball stadium. Four rounds of play will be conducted tonight with the first game at 5.45pm, then 6.30pm, then 7.15pm and the final round at 8pm. Due to the red light settings, only limited numbers are allowed in the stadium at any one time.
Semi-finalists found After weeks of competition at the Hampstead All Sports Club, the semi-finalists have been found in this year’s Slow Pitch competition on Friday nights. Team S & Giggles finished as the competition’s top qualifiers, and will be favoured to go on and win the title from there but they’ll get some strong opposition from Marines and Angels who weren’t far off them on the standings. The former will play against Laser Attack this week for a spot in the final, while the latter will do battle with Hakatere Hitters in the other semi. Both games get under way at 6.30pm.

from Debbie Skinner and Allan Johns. Next week the club will be travelling to Hinds to contest a 50km handicap event.

Mid Canterbury product, Ollie Sapsford made his Super Rugby debut on the weekend as his Brumbies side opened their campaign with a victory over the Force. Sapsford came off the bench in the second half and was on hand to watch as the Brumbies snatched victory from the jaws of defeat late in the match after trailing by two points with just seconds remaining on the clock.
Discipline again a hot topic in Crusaders HQ despite victory Matt Markham
T
he points are on the board, so you can’t be too disappointed – but Scott Robertson certainly didn’t hold back his frustrations following the Crusaders opening round victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday night. The red and blacks were ruthless for 70 minutes of the encounter, and looked on track to bag a comfortable bonus point win to open up their campaign in Super Rugby Pacific, only to concede two late tries and see the Hurricanes sneak that point away from them. Perhaps it was the four-hour bus ride back to home base in Queenstown that had Robertson a little wound up, or the proof may have been in the pudding of the 13 penalties his side conceded in the match. But either way, he wasn’t very happy – especially on
the discipline front. “Discipline is something you take ownership of as individuals, it’s the mindset of the group,” he told media. “Firstly, we have to be really honest about it and look at each individual penalty and probably realise the context of it. “Realise for us that you’ve got make a change, or you put yourself under too much pressure and that’s when you end up leaking points, and that’s what cost us last year with for and against.” The discipline issue will be concerning for the franchise. Last season they were the most penalised team in both Super Rugby Aotearoa and also in the trans-Tasman competition which followed. But that aside, and the final 10 minutes, the Crusaders were excellent. Leicester Fainga’anuku was the man for the occasion, scoring three tries – two in the first half and one in the second, with a penalty try also falling the Crusaders way as well as another to Shilo Klein.
The Hurricanes were, as they were in the pre-season, plucky to the end. They had a number of chances to score during the match, but until the final 10 minutes were met with the sort of resistance you’ve come to expect from the Crusaders, who refused to give an inch. But coach Jason Holland still has plenty of positives to look upon as they gear up towards this week. The Chiefs opened their season with a win against the Highlanders in Queenstown early on the evening, winning 26-16 in a bruising affair. Meanwhile, discussions are in place which could see the teams relocating back to their home provinces from the temporary Queenstown base as early as next week. A final decision is set to be made by the end of the week. Competition newcomers Moana Pasifika are also expected to return to play this weekend, after their opening round clash with the Blues was postponed on the weekend due to a
number of players contracting Covid. Their match, against the Chiefs, has been rescheduled to Sunday to allow more time for the team in preparation for the second round.
