Unveiling of Winz memorial on seventh anniversary Malcolm Hopwood
Community House is planning to unveil the new memorial to the victims of the Winz shootings on its seventh anniversary. The existing memorial was vandalised last month and artist, Peter Green, was unable to repair it. Instead, he will shortly relocate to Oamaru to craft local stone to design and build a new memorial. Recently appointed general manager of Community House, Jess Wilson, said the new structure will look different, but will include the original Infinity design within it. “The memorial will be significantly bigger and more robust and we hope to give it protection

by installing security cameras,” Wilson said. Community House has chosen the September 1 anniversa-
ry of the tragic incident where Winz staff members, Peg Noble and Susan Leigh Cleveland, were gunned down, to unveil the me-
morial. Police are still making inquiries about the vandalism of the memorial that was captured on CCTV security cameras on the morning of June 18. Wilson, originally from Northern Ireland, met her Ashburton husband, Ryan, in London 15 years ago and moved to Methven. She has a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education and taught science at Ashburton College for four years. More recently she has led Wellbeing Opuke, a community project that connects rural communities around Mid Canterbury, reducing isolation and helping residents feel more connected. “I thrive on helping people and enjoy working with diverse communities,” she said. “It’s what fills my cup.” “My role is to create a space where anyone who uses Community House feels welcome, enjoys the building and will continue to use it.”
Staveley ice rink ready to roll Rink open
Jonathan Leask It has been six years since the Staveley Ice Skating and Curling Rinks opened to the public and that changes today. The recent run of cold temperatures and frosty mornings has allowed ice manager Ivan Syme to curate an ice rink thick enough to open to the public for the first time since 2015. After a long wait Mother Nature has finally played its part, and just in time for the school holidays. Spokeswoman Claire Harden said the rink will be open for at least a week if not two weeks and anything more is completely weather dependent. “We have a good base to get in a few days and as long as the nor’west stays away we might be able to get a good two weeks or even a month.” However, if the society has its
way it will be open for business every winter. They recently launched a campaign for a $1.1 million redevelopment of the ice rink that will see a refrigerated concrete slab laid down on the main rink, guaranteeing it can open for at least three months each winter. Having the rink open this week will serve as the perfect promotion for the redevelopment project aimed at future-proofing the site, Harden said. “It’s giving us the opportunity to showcase what it is we want to keep.
Harden said based on the level of interest in the last 48 hours, they are expecting a big few days in Staveley – including the two late nights on Wednesday and Saturday. The Windwhistle Curling Club has been sending out the call and the game will also make a return this week. The entry prices have remained unchanged since 2015, Harden said, hoping to encourage more people to head up to Staveley and possibly pay it forward. “We are hoping that keeping the retro prices, people will come

As well as the crowdfunding and sponsorship, Harden said they are in the process of filing a number of grant applications.
Doctors inundated with RSV calls By Malcolm Hopwood
Ashburton GPs have been overwhelmed by calls about the RSV virus that’s sweeping the country. The flu-like respiratory syncytial virus, which is common in winter, has put children’s wards and general practices across the country under extreme pressure, with some infants struggling to breathe and requiring intensive care. Ashburton GPs had a meeting last week and spoke of the pressure on them from people ringing about sick children with respiratory conditions. Spokesman, Dr Anibal Martinez, said some pressure had come through TV messages encouraging parents to take their children directly to their GP. He said because RSV was a virus “mums and dads should keep children at home, use medication to reduce temperature, ensure they’re comfortable and get them to drink plenty of liquid”. “If children are non-responsive, dehydrated or in respiratory distress, they should contact the triage nurse at their medical centre to make an assessment and, if required, see their GP.” Dr Martinez said all Ashburton medical centres have treated children with RSV and he’s aware it had spread through early childhood centres (ECC), “with a few children admitted to hospital”. One ECC the Guardian spoke to had half of its students off last week, with some confirmed RSV cases and the rest showing symptoms. Canterbury DHB chief medical officer, Dr Helen Skinner, said the increase in patients requiring assessment and/or admission put pressure on bed capacity, and has had flow-on impacts on wait times for assessment and elective surgery activity. “Anecdotally, we are seeing an increased number of children presenting to our facilities with RSV this week.”

Collins doubles down on leadership concerns Adam Burns National Party leader Judith Collins has rubbished suggestions that there is uncertainty around her leadership during a visit to flood-torn Mid Canterbury at the weekend. A couple of days after she was remarkably lapped by David Seymour in the preferred Prime Minister count and lingering questions around her ongoing position at the helm, Collins was in no mood to entertain the prospect when she was in Ashburton on Saturday. She spoke exclusively to the Guardian following a briefing by Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown and councillors around the recovery of the May 30-31 floods. After naturally taking aim at the Government on a handful of matters including Three Waters, its clean car package and its overall response to the recent Canterbury floods, Collins swiftly dismissed questions that her role was under threat. “There’s no insecurity around
Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg and National Party leader Judith Collins meet with Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury president David Clark on Saturday. PHOTO SUPPLIED the leadership,” she said. “People aren’t stupid, they know we’ve had to deal with some very difficult issues over the last month and we’ve dealt with them.”
National has endured an unsettled period of late with the controversial resignations of veteran MP Nick Smith and former leader Todd Muller. Collins again brushed off the
UMR poll count which recorded a first ever occurrence of an ACT Party leader surpassing a National counterpart. “People also aren’t stupid enough to think the Labour Par-
ty pollsters are going to say anything other than what the Labour Party wants, so let’s just understand that one.” She said it had not been a distraction. “We’ll just keep on going,” she said. “We’re not interested in distractions, although the media do like to talk about distractions because apparently the media likes distractions.” The Ashburton District has historically been a National Party stronghold given its strong agricultural bedrock. But Collins’ popularity, according to the latest UMR poll – which pegs her at 10 per cent in the preferred Prime Minister rankings behind ACT’s David Seymour on 12 – appears to be waning. Alongside her was her Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg who has been one of the staunchest critics of the Government’s response to the one-in-200 year flood event. Collins visited flood-damaged farms and the Ashburton State Highway 1 Bridge which was damaged as a result of the floods.
Collins echoes calls for second bridge funding Adam Burns Judith Collins has echoed numerous calls for the Government to help Ashburton for a second bridge and to “not play silly games” around its infrastructure priorities. And like many Mid Cantabrians before her, she could not help but draw comparisons to a certain bridge in Auckland, whilst putting the Government’s roading and infrastructure spend under scrutiny.
The May 30-31 flooding event has reignited discussion on a long-awaited second bridge over the Ashburton River after the town’s sole overpass copped foundation damage as a result of the floods. Talk only intensified after Transport Minister Michael Wood unveiled plans for a $785 million cycling and walking overpass alongside the Auckland Harbour Bridge, the same week the Ashburton District grappled with floodwaters and no bridge. Now the leader of the opposition has joined in the debate when she was in Ashburton on Saturday visiting the flood-damaged district.
“They need about $40 million dollars which in the grand scheme of things is not enormous for a government,” Collins said. “Particularly when there’s a cycle bridge over the Auckland Harbour that Aucklanders don’t need or want . . . at three-quarters of a billion dollars and Ashburton only needs 40 (million).” The Ashburton District Council is working through a three stage strategic business case for a second bridge which is to be presented to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). The second phase has recently been delayed and is scheduled to be completed by September after
council requested data from the floods be incorporated into its report. But mayor Neil Brown has called for more Government support beyond its 51 per cent threshold for the project following the floods. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said many councils would make similar arguments for further funding following adverse weather events. There is no business case for the proposed Auckland bridge. “You have places like Ashburton that produces funding and money that pays the bills getting told ‘oh we’ll wait and wait’ . . . why,” Collins said.
“I think Waka Kotahi should stand up and look after the people who pay the road user charges and petrol taxes.” Self-proclaimed e-biker David Seymour also said he was opposed to the planned Auckland bridge when he sat down with the Guardian last week. “Let’s just say to the people of Ashburton, I don’t want the stupid bridge either.”

Town mural ‘lovely and bright’ Koryu Aoshima in front on the nearly-competed mural he has done on Armadillo’s back wall. It can be seen from Cass Street. PHOTO MADDISON GOURLAY
Maddison Gourlay It’s just the tedious finishing touches left to do on Ashburton’s new CBD mural.
Geraldine-based artist Koryu Aoshima has been working on the mural on the wall behind Armadillo’s for over a month. “I’m quite lucky to be ahead of schedule, the weather and rain did stop a bit of progress but not enough for me to not finish on time,” Aoshima said. The mural had been a talking
point between Aoshima and the constant stream of passerbys. “When I have been working on the [words] Hakatere, I am right beside the road and footpath and I have had a lot of people stop and say hello and compliment the mural,” he said. That’s exactly what happened when the Guardian was talking
to Aoshima. A couple exited the car park and yelled out to say how “lovely and bright” the mural was before giving him the thumbs up and a wave goodbye. “A lot of people have done that while leaving the carpark, I find it great,” he said. Aoshima was also pleased with how the interactive photographic
spot of the film roll had come out and was excited to see people use the hashtag on social media. He was now finishing it off in preparation for the official unveiling on July 24. “I just have a few more finishing touches to go, so I can be happy with what I have done, but I am pleased the majority of it has been completed.”

Child caught after lift slip By Jonathan Leask
Ashburton Hospital’s rural medical immersion programme leaders and students are (from left): Rutvi Soni, Isabel Clarke, Hamish Liddy, Dr Janine Lander, Dr Branko Sijnja and Anniliese Wheeler.
On the heartbeat of the job Malcolm Hopwood Four medical students have had the courage to step aside from academic studies and come to rural Mid Canterbury to learn. After completing six months, alternating at Ashburton Hospital or working in general practices, they were recently visited by their director, Dr
Branko Sijnja. “Without a doubt, they’ll be patient savvy, more friendly and more confident,” he said. The fifth-year medical students were part of a unique, year-long, rural medical immersion programme (RMIP) that’s practised in seven regional centres. The Ashburton programme began last year. “This is a learning programme, it’s an apprenticeship model. We look for students to teach themselves while they’re here, learning on the job,” Dr Sijnja said. This month they were as-
sessed by Dr Sijnja and local co-ordinator, Dr Janine Lander. They’d already presented their portfolio of what they’ve done, completed multi-choice questions and been part of simulated clinical situations. “I was here to meet them and give them feedback. In managing patients, they’re streets ahead and, at the end of this year, they’ll slot into medical situations very easily,” he said. Students Isabel Clarke, Rutvi Soni, Hamish Liddy and Anniliese Wheeler, chose to come to Ashburton instead
of spending their fifth year at Otago Medical School. In rural locations such as Rakaia and Methven medical centres, they’ve worked alongside GPs, assessing patients, examining them, suggesting a medical treatment and discussing it with the doctor. The four came to understand what it was like for those living in remote areas of Mid Canterbury. “The rural programme is the best way to understand the people. You see their story and understand your role in helping them,” they said.
Skiers and rescuers scrambled into action as a young boy was spotted dangling from the Mt Hutt skifield’s new Nor’west Express chairlift, 5m above the ground, on Sunday. The child had slipped out of the chairlift which Mt Hutt staff immediately spotted and stopped the lift only 15m from the terminal. The boy dangled there for two minutes while staff and members of the public rushed to his aid, taking safety pads from a nearby tower of the chairlift to catch the boy who dropped to safety and was uninjured. Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said the Nor’west Express was the latest and safest technology available and despite all the safety measures in place “incidents are still possible”. “It’s almost impossible to rule it out,” he said. Close to 250,000 people have ridden the new eight-seater chairlift in its first month and McKenzie said the boy had successfully negotiated the lift on nine previous rides, but on the tenth he managed to get in a position where both his legs were on one side of the safety bar. “It’s hard to know how exactly they have managed to do that but they have. “The boy was a pretty efficient skier, they have just made a mistake. “We have taken every step to eliminate the possibility of mistakes, but it is still possible for things to go wrong,” McKenzie said.

Mt Hutt’s specially trained animal tamers gathered every teddy they could from the primary and preschools of Methven for a giant sleepover for Friday night. The hundreds of soft toys were “very mischievous” according to Mt Hutt’s Michael Willis. The sleep over saw the toys cause mischief at the café, the Norwest express, and they even tried out the new chair lift. On Saturday many of the toys owners were pleased to be reunited with their pals and hear about all the wild things they got up to on the giant sleepover.

Foothills Young Farmers’ Club crowned best in the land By Heather Chalmers
The Mt Somers-based Foothills Young Farmers’ Club has been named the organisation’s best club, in part for its work helping with clean-up efforts after the Canterbury floods. Club chairman Simon Wakefield said it was great to win the award. “It’s great for the club and a wonderful recognition of what they’ve achieved the past few years, especially in the wake of the floods. It’s a great boost to the club.” The five other clubs nominated for the award were Dannevirke, Kaipara, Whanganui, Christchurch City and South Waikato Young Farmers. The criteria for the award is a combination of attendance at regional events, involvement with TeenAg, activity of the club, planning, professionalism and importantly, community involvement. “We want to focus on being a community within a community and give back as much as we can and help out in times of need,” Wakefield said. In the week after the flooding the club organised 60 volunteers including Lincoln University students. A Movember at the Mount evening raised $10,000 for charity and the club had also organised a regional wellbeing event featuring Tangaroa Walker of Farm4life

Clayton, Pine aim to be top dogs Mid Canterbury high country stock manager Cam Clayton and his heading dog Pine are taking part in a trans-Tasman challenge vying to be crowned the hardest working dog. It is the first time New Zealand dogs are competing against their Australian counterparts in the Cobber Working Dog Challenge. Clayton’s dog is one of three New Zealand entries, competing with nine from throughout Australia. Each dog will wear a GPS collar to track how far, fast and for how long they work over a three-week period. Now in its sixth year, the 2021 Cobber Challenge will run from August 16 to September 5. It promises to add to the trans-Tasman rivalry, already stoked by the rugby union Bledisloe Cup that runs between the nations through August. Each day of the competition, data is uploaded to the Cobber Challenge website so fans can follow the performance of their favourite dogs and national team. New Zealand will be represented by three heading dogs – a new breed for the Cobber Challenge that has historically been dominated by kelpies, border collies and coolies.
Stock manager Cam Clayton said his dog Pine was his best mate. “When the day is long and work is hard, Pine is always there and happy to work. I believe we have a really good chance to take out this competition. I think we’ll give the Aussies a run for their money,” Clayton said. The other New Zealand entries are Josh Tosh and Trix from Dipton, Southland and Peter Aitken and Spark from Millers Flat, Otago. Cobber’s marketing manager Kellie Savage was excited to have New Zealand on board for this year’s Cobber Challenge. “The three Kiwi competitors work in incredible landscapes and I think their dogs will cover impressive distances. We’re thankful to everyone who applied. How much everyone values their dogs as part of the farm team shone through in the nominations,” Savage said. For three weeks, the dogs will be scored based on distance, speed and duration of work per day with points accumulated based on daily activity to determine the winner of the Cobber Challenge trophy. People can follow the performance of their favourite dog at cobberchallenge.com.au and on the Cobber Dog Facebook page.

You can drive a ute down the rural-urban divide A s a daughter of a passionate farmer and having been in various farming groups over the years I have witnessed the discussion about the existence of urban-rural divide and how to fix it if it does exist. It was never going to be an easy fix. The current Government has potentially increased the gulf by introducing policies so ridiculous and out of touch with their constituents, those at the coal face of keeping our economy burning, it’s almost incomprehensible. The kind of policies that unite different sectors in a collective slow-burning rage. The latest divisive piece of legislation is the levies on utes to subsidise discount incentives on electric vehicles. This latest gem will be rolled out in January adding a cost of around $3000 to the purchase of vehicles such as a Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux. The issue that sits at odds with common sense is these

That discontent is coming together on July 16 with the Howl of a Protest event which presents an opportunity for those of us who are fed up with unworkable and impractical policy to bring their utes, tractors and dogs together in a collaborative and loud demonstration of objection. With no electric alternative on the horizon until the end of the decade, those whose work relies on the use of such vehicles are being penalised. Despite opposition from the primary sector, including Federated Farmers request for an exemption for farm vehicles, Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern has indicated that the Government will not budge. Tractor tragedy: Death of toddler, pregnant mum, sparks warning Ashburton Guardian reporters and the NZ Herald Farmers everywhere have lessons to learn from the death of a 33-year-old pregnant woman and her 3-year-old son after their tractor slipped into a reservoir. That’s the findings of a coroner’s report into the tragic incident where Nadine Tomlinson, 33, and her 3-year-old son Angus died on September 30, 2018 after becoming trapped inside a tractor which lost control and slipped into a reservoir on their property in Palmerston, East Otago. WorkSafe found in its report for the coroner that “all duty holders” involved in the incident breached their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. WorkSafe also said farmers needed to consider more carefully the risks they exposed themselves and their children to. It said since the year 2000, it had recorded 42 workplace fatalities involving children and young people (0 – 18 years old) in the agriculture sector. “The agriculture sector has an opportunity to learn from this incident, passengers must not be carried in any vehicle that does not have sufficient seating, restraints or is not fit for the purpose for carrying passengers,’’ WorkSafe’s report said. “By having unseated, unrestrained or people in positions

PHOTO SUPPLIED in or on vehicles not designed to carry passengers, the hazards and risks associated with the use of any vehicle are significantly increased. These learnings are also applicable across other sectors where vehicles and young people are involved.’’ In the incident, Tomlinson, an experienced tractor driver, was heading to collect a dead animal on the farm. Angus had tagged along but he was standing and not wearing a seatbelt, it said in the
coroner’s report. She and her husband Scott also had an 18-month-old son Samuel and Tomlinson was 16 weeks’ pregnant. After picking up a trailer, the pair were travelling downhill towards a track around the pond when tragedy struck. After she had failed to return by 3.30pm that day, Scott drove to the area where the trailer had been parked but it was no longer there. He drove to where the dead an-
imal was and seeing it still lying there, he retraced his steps and saw fertiliser bags floating in the dam. He also noticed skid marks leading into the water and called emergency services. The bodies of Tomlinson and Angus were recovered from the pond the next day. She had managed to get out of the tractor cab with her son, but did not reach the surface as her shirt was caught on a small cleat
on the trailer. A police investigation revealed the tractor had been travelling down the steep slope leading to the pond. A left tyre mark indicated Tomlinson had been braking as she descended,“to the point of locking up”. WorkSafe found with the left brake applied fully, it is likely that turning the tractor right would have been unachievable. “The tractor was towing an unbraked trailer which weighed 1700 kilograms empty; this would have increased the demand on the braking system and made it harder for it to stop, it may have also effected (sic) steering,” a WorkSafe report said. The investigation found there were no obvious faults with the tractor and it was in a reasonable condition. The coroner said she believed Tomlinson became concerned at the speed the tractor was travelling as she descended the steep slope. “Despite her extensive tractor driving experience it appears that she only applied the left-hand side brake pedal with the intention of turning right in the direction of the dead animal. “However, this caused the tractor to sledge and continue tracking straight into the dam. The weight of the trailer may also have influenced the braking capability of the tractor.”

More than just a court jester I
t’s hard not to look at him at times and think court jester, but there’s so much more to David Seymour than meets the eye. It seems many New Zealanders now agree. That’s been emphasised by the latest poll result, which has the affable, sometimes goofy looking Seymour ahead of National’s Judith Collins in the preferred Prime Minister stakes. Yes, he’s still well behind Jacinda Ardern, but that’s no surprise because of her undoubted popularity and because sitting Prime Ministers generally enjoy much higher support than other party leaders anyway. But the move by the Act Party leader was significant and it
Daryl Holden cannot be underplayed. Though some poll results could be dismissed because of their credibility, that’s not the case with this one. The UMR political poll is a serious player. It’s so credible that Collins, in a visit to Ashburton on Saturday, would have been hoping that the headline around the preferred PM result would have quickly been dwarfed by other news.
The result would have been as uncomfortable for her as it would have been exhilarating for Seymour, who could have been excused for perhaps feeling a little smug. But he played the humble card in Ashburton. He mingled with customers at The Somerset Grocer café like the approachable political rock star he’s become. Then, a few hours’ later in an interview at the Guardian, he simply suggested the result only indicated that voters had conveyed a message that he must work even harder. “It’s like playing one of those old video games, but you just have to fight bigger demons.” Collins should know all about
fighting demons and monster-like challenges. Look at what she has had to deal with. She became the third National Party leader in three months, taking over the helm after Todd Muller’s disastrous 53-day leadership. She inherited a bitterly divided caucus in turmoil from the Muller fallout and the Hamish Walker leaking patient details scandal. And then she had the Andrew Falloon sexting controversy just to top it all off. To say it’s been tough going for Collins is like saying that bloke Djokovic can play a bit of tennis. It’s stating the flipping obvious. And now she has a smirking Seymour not only on her tail but

starting to pull ahead. Life just doesn’t get any easier for Crusher Collins. Hers is not a quick-fix situation. She needs time to turn everything around and perhaps deserves to see out the term, given that the National brand was so resoundingly kicked and booted around last year. But not only has Collins got a National Party rebuild to worry about, and poll results working against her, she also has Act’s cheeky court jester making inroads while the blue team continues to flounder. For that, Seymour deserves to have a bit of giggle. At least to himself.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown and yours truly paid an emotional visit of thanks to Room 6, Tinwald School after the students sent letters following the recent flood event.
A really nice surprise Phill Hooper
A
couple of weeks ago I had one of the days that remind me just how cool my job is at times. Mayor Brown and I popped over to Tinwald School for a surprise visit to Room 6. These awesome kids had written Neil and I some letters of thanks during the flood event. I’ll let you into a wee secret if you promise not to tell the lads I play golf with (most of them struggle to count, let alone read). I shed a few tears as I read through the letters they had written me. To be fair I’d had a couple of pretty big days and was running on adrenaline and coffee, so I was feeling a bit precious as it was. It’s 3.30am and I’m reading Henae’s letter saying thanks for keeping in contact with us when we were worried and scared about the bridge, you were calming us down, it really helped us. That’s when they welled up a bit, but when Daniel started his letter with “Thank you for stopping the rain from washing Ashburton away” I blurted out one of those Gufflubs. That’s a guffaw and a blub, simultaneously. And that’s the moment they started rolling down the cheeks. So needless to say, when the Mayor’s PA reached out and said he was keen to pop in and say thanks for the letters and would I like to tag along, I jumped at the chance. I’m not sure the kids really knew I was there, those Mayoral chains had them pretty much spellbound. After we thanked them for the letters, they asked Neil some searching questions, like how high did the river get and are we getting a second bridge. We then all lined up for
some photos together. The kids loved our surprise visit, I know this because they asked us if we could stay with them for the rest of the day and send their teacher home and one of the kid’s parents texted me that evening saying, “my boy loved seeing you today, he came home pumped, good work”. I was a bit pumped as well and I think Neil was too, in a Mayoral kind of way.

On a different note, I wanted to wish Clare, Rob and all the fundraising team from the Staveley Ice Rink all the best with their refrigeration fundraiser. I hope it goes great and we get guaranteed ice skating every winter in the very near future. And wouldn’t you know it, just as they launch their campaign, Murphy’s Law kicks in and it looks like the weather gods are playing ball this year and the rink could be open today. The timing for that couldn’t be better I reckon. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Sook. Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. Rep side ready for battle Matt Markham There’s a little bit of the old, mixed in with a whole lot of the new in this year’s Mid Canterbury Netball senior representative side. The 15-strong group, which includes three non-travelling reserves, met for the first occasion on Sunday morning following the announcement of the side last week to begin what will be a hectic few weeks of preparation before their first big challenge of the season. The Hanan Shield tournament, of which Mid Canterbury are defending champions, will be held in Waimate on Sunday, August 1 – and head coach Claire Tappin is keen to get as much time together as possible to build her team before they head south. “It’s an exciting time, but also quite a relief to have finally named the squad,” she said last week. “But there’s also been a bit of pressure with it too, and some big decisions that needed to be made, but now we’ve made them it’s time to start working towards the targets and building our team unit.” This year’s squad features a number
The squad Caitlin Adlam, Leanne Clemens, Meg Gilbert, Kelsey Hart, Catherine Kuyf, Abi Lunn, Loumaile Manumua, Olivia McLennan, Laura Muckle, Shannon Vidler, Natasha Waddell, Sophie Worsfold. Non-Travelling Reserves: Hayley Duthie, Harmyn McLean, Jessie Turner-Robinson.
of returning names from last year’s squad, but also boasts a number of new players to the mix who worked their way into contention through strong efforts in club netball and in both trial days which were held. Senior players, Caitlin Adlam, Leanne Clemens, Abi Lunn and Sophie Worsfold – who have been members of the team in recent years will offer up the experience this season. But there’s also an exciting new wave of players too. One particular omission though is sharp-shooter, Alice Eddington who declared herself unavailable. “You’d obviously love to have a player like Alice in your squad, but she’s a busy lady and we respect her decision,” Tappin said. There’s no shortage of very good shooters to fill the void though, with a number of players named in the squad who have shown their ability inside the circle this season, including Eddington’s shooting mate at Hampstead, Natasha Waddell. With her as well as Tongan international, Loumaile Manumua, Celtic’s Catherine Kuyf, Southern’s Shannon Vidler and also Celtic’s Olivia McLennan, there’s plenty of power there to fill that void. The squad will meet again over the next two Sundays before the Hanan Shield tournament, after which the travelling squad will be cut down to just 10 for the weekend. Due to the Hanan only being a one-day tournament, sides are allowed to carry just 10 players. Post the Hanan Shield, the squad will turn their attention to the South Island Seniors tournament in Dunedin later in the month of August where they will return to a full squad of 12. Three players have also been named as non-travelling reserves for the season and Tappin expected that there would be times when they would need to be called on during the campaign.

Playoffs race begins With what seems like only a minor disaster stopping Hampstead from rolling through the championship round unbeaten before the playoffs, the interesting race in Premier 1 netball is now on who finishes where below them. The No.1 ranked side at the end of the pool play section of the round will play the No.4 ranked side while those at No.2 and No.3 will face off in the other semi-final. While it’s not forgone that Hampstead will hold down the top spot, it’s hard to see them not doing it either. So, getting wins on the board to avoid having to face the defending champions in the semi-final will be a real goal for the remaining teams in the competition. Hampstead take on
Southern this week in the middle game of the night while Methven and Ashburton College A will begin the evening’s proceedings. The night ends with perhaps the most crucial battle of the evening, when Celtic take on United. Smarting from their demolition at the hands of Hampstead last week, United will be keen to put a much more cohesive and consistent game on the court than they did seven days earlier. If they can’t beat Celtic, then they’ll find themselves in a tough position with two losses from the first two games, needing some results to go their way to ensure they make it into the knockout stage of the season.
Late goal snares much needed win Matt Markham
Running and walking with a purpose A mass start of 30 competitors on a sunny July winter’s day set the scene for the inaugural 5-kilometre, Johnny McGrath Memorial Trophy for Ashburton Run and Walk members on Saturday. The runners completed a 5km time trial on the same course at Argyle Park. The McGrath family were out in force to support the competitors, with both Phil and Shona McGrath taking part, and the rest of the family stationed at ‘Johnny’s Corner’ encouraging the walkers and runners as they went past. Later Marie McGrath presented the trophy. Organisers of the event described it as a very special day with photos shared from past races, old tales told and reminiscing over good times. Stacey Hooper claimed honours in the walkers event, picking up the Johnny McGrath Memorial Trophy by eight seconds from Noel Batty, while Jeremy Hayes won the 5km time trial, two minutes ahead this nearest rival, Brian Goodes. A late goal from Stephen Blain grabbed the Mid Canterbury Men’s senior hockey side a much-needed victory at Nga Puna Wai in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. Up against a Marist side who had beaten them earlier in the season, and sat just below them on the overall standings, the Mid Canterbury side walked onto the turf determined to right the wrong, and when they grabbed an early goal through an excellent piece of work from Thomas White things looked good. But Marist had a few answers too. They drove hard and were eventually rewarded with a goal late in the first quarter to bring the scores to level. In the second, Mid Canterbury worked well through the middle of the turf and created a number of opportunities but were unable to convert. Eventually though it was Marist who broke the deadlock,
again in the shadows of the end of the quarter to grab the lead 2-1 at the halftime break. A scoreless third quarter did nothing to help the chances of Mid Canterbury – they again created a number of opportunities but were unable to capitalise. However, they did ensure the lead didn’t grow any larger through some strong defensive work. The final quarter started exactly how Mid Canterbury wanted it to. Blain went on a long sweeping run toward the baseline before finding Brad Nordqvist, who was in the right spot to bang home a goal and bring the scores back to level. Then, with just minutes left on the clock, Mid Canterbury earned a penalty corner and Blain stepped up to the mark and swept the ball past the keeper to give Mid Canterbury the lead, which they didn’t relent over the final stages of the match. The win keeps Mid Canterbury inside the top four just and they’ll need to grab maximum points again this week in their clash with University if they’re to hold down that spot with the four teams below them, just three points behind.

Finalists found, with a week to go Matt Markham There’s another round to be played, but the top four sides in Mid Canterbury’s Watters Cup have been found. The only question now is who will finish where and who will take on who in the semi-finals next week. Hampstead, who were docked four competition points before playing a game, can’t make it through to the knockout stage, although they nearly gave themselves a big chance in their narrow loss to Celtic on Saturday, meaning Southern, Celtic, Rakaia and defending champions Methven will play knockout rugby. Southern hold sway at the top of the standings, but their finishing position is out of their hands as they step into the bye for the final round. They overcame a few nervous moments against Methven on Saturday to win 42-33. Meanwhile, in town Celtic were forced to dig deep to hold out a determined Hampstead, who threw everything they could at the green machine, but finished up just short at 19-18. After swapping converted tries early, the game settled into a serious arm-wrestle for the second
At a glance Southern 42 (James Hastings, Makasaile Kauvanua, Ryan Nicolls, Adam Williamson, George Williams tries, Williams 4 conv. 3 pen.) Hampstead 18 (Jonathony Arona, Nicky Brown tries, Toafa Toui 1 conv. 2 pen)
Hampstead go close to pulling off the big upset
quarter, as appears to be standard procedure for all teams visiting the Hampstead Rugby & All Sports Club grounds. Late in the half, the Hampstead scrum produced a monster effort, shoving the green pack backwards, and set the tone for a five-minute period where the ref issued a string of penalties against Celtic. The home side pressed home the advantage, opting for repeated scrums, and despite some desperate tackling from the green line, Hampstead finally crashed over in the corner for an unconverted try to Nicky Brown, a minute before the break. Shortly after the break, the Hampstead scrum again hit top gear, rewarded with a penalty to get their team out of a trouble spot. Celtic came back at them, however, and despite their scrum again back-pedalling, Shepherd Mhembere topped a powerful game by picking up at the back, charging down the blindside and around a couple of defenders to dot down and even up the score line at 12-12. Another superb sideline conversion from McCloy put the greens in front; two points that would prove vital come final-score time. As the final quarter unfolded, so did some fearsome hits as the intensity level went through the roof, and for a while it looked like the Celtic coaches might be looking for their playing gear, such was the distressed state of their bench. While Celtic came up with a couple of slick runs down the flanks, the ref’s whistle was again costing them on defence, including one extra 10 metres for backchat. Hampstead’s kicker Toafa Touli was quite happy to get in some shooting practice, and banged over one to make it 15-14, then a few minutes later repeating the dose, and the home team had the finish line in sight with their noses in front at 18-14. But Celtic wasn’t finished, and after winning a mid-field scrum, a massive overhead pass from Mc-
Mitchell Pannett braces for impact during a scrum on Saturday. Cloy found hooker Max Stapleton lurking right on the sideline, and he found enough gas to make the line, just in from the corner post. Elyh McKibbin’s conversion attempt hit the post. There was time for a re-start, but there were no miracles on offer for the Hampstead side, and Celtic played out the last few minutes to record a very hardearned 19-18 victory. half saw Southern lead 29-20 at the end of the first half, but the points scoring stopped for a long period of time in the second, with both sides trading sole penalties until the 65-minute mark. Then a match ensued. Southern scored to extend their lead to 39-23, but Methven answered back with an unconverted try. A penalty to Southern put the game out of reach, though, and

although Methven scored a late try it was too little too late, as they lost the match 42-33. Critical for them though was the bonus point for scoring four tries in the match. It gives them a chance, if they can beat Hampstead this week, of sneaking a spot above Rakaia if they happen to fall to Celtic. It also meant that Hampstead can’t draw level with them this week when the two sides meet. George Williams led the scoring for Southern with a 22-point haul that included a try while Ryan Nicholls, Adam Williamson, Makasiale Kauvanua and James Hastings all dotted down. For Methven, their backs led most of the action with Reuben Early, Tim Lawn and Tiger Holmes finding the line, while loose forward Matt Stone also crashed over. Brenton Connell added two conversions and three penalties.
Allenton, Methven to contest Senior B final Matt Markham Allenton and Methven will shoot for Senior B rugby glory this weekend, after narrow victories in their respective semi-finals on Saturday. The Second Grade Cup, which is competed for throughout the season alongside the competition’s other major trophies, the Michael Duff Memorial, The Centennial Mug and the Bruce Beckley Shield, is the finale of the season for the Senior B competition, and after a dominant beginning, things have really tightened right up. Allenton had the easier of times booking a finals berth, beating Celtic 36-28 out at Celtic, but Methven – for the second time in a row – had to withstand an excellent
Mt Somers side who pushed them to within one point, Methven eventually claiming victory 29-28. Allenton ran in six tries in their effort at Celtic, including a double to the talented Xavier Bartlett who’s been excellent at No.10 throughout the season. Dafydd Philp, Bryce Elvy, Sam Whiting and Jake Willis also got their names on the score sheet through tries, while Bartlett added three conversions. Celtic have been a strong force all season, but were unable to withstand the Allenton charge on the day. They scored four tries, with Jayden Faunge converting all of them, but it wasn’t enough to see them over the line. Methven, who looked set to be the dominant force again this season, have shown some frailties in recent weeks, and Mt Somers were ready to try and exploit them on Saturday, and they did for a lot of the match.
Methven’s four tries ultimately proved to be the difference in the match, with both sides kicking well to keep the score close throughout the entire 80 minutes. Methven’s Faaitu Tuamoheloa grabbed a double from the midfield, his power-running game a real force for any defensive line. What Methven does well is distribute. There’s some serious firepower in their backline and they are quick to make sides pay through their experienced players. For Mt Somers, it’s a case of what might have been. Twice the boys in red and blue been right in the fight against the defending champions this season, and twice it hasn’t fallen their way. With a good squad, they’ll be a serious side next season, and they get to begin their campaign with the Bruce Beckley Challenge Shield proudly displayed in their clubrooms.

Nicholson all class Matt Markham Methven Football Club seniors called in the big guns on Saturday, and he delivered in style. With regular starting goalkeeper James Wasley out of action for the match, the side welcomed former All Whites keeper, Ross Nicholson into the side for their clash with Christchurch United. And Nicholson played a huge role in getting the side another victory, and keeping them on top of the Mainland Football’s Division One competition. One of two dominant forces in the division this year, Methven – who are in their debut appearance in Division One – have been powerful all season, and they showed that in front of their home faithful on Saturday with two goals to Colin Cameron in the first half to take control. A sloppy second half however threatened to derail that result, with Christchurch United scoring to bring the game closer. Nicholson made his impact though with a second-half penalty save to shut out Christchurch United and see Methven grab three valuable points. They’ll head into their match this week with St Albans Shirley with a chance to go clear in the Division. They currently share top spot with Halswell United who are off this week with the bye, giving the Methven lads a chance to take control of the competition with the business end looming.

The Mid Canterbury Under 18 Girls’ hockey side had a tough start at the national tournament in Wellington on Sunday, taking on the might of Canterbury A in the first game of the tournament. There would be no fairytale finish though, with the side losing 0-7, but there were plenty of positives to take from the match including the fact that Canterbury could only score one goal in both the third and fourth quarters of the match.
Festival of Rugby The Mid Canterbury Heartland Rugby side will play a part in a special day of celebration of all things rugby during this year’s campaign. The team will travel to Christchurch on September 4 to play Southern Canterbury at Orangetheory Stadium as part of a celebration of rugby in the region. The match will be televised on Sky Sport, giving Mid Canterbury fans two chances to see their side in action away from home with their match against Thames Valley on August 21 also being played on Sky Sport.

Methven’s Jorge Ventriglia looks to get past a defender on the weekend. With the Mid Canterbury United Senior side out of action for the week, the Reserves side stepped up to play FC Twenty but were unable to secure a victory, going down 1-3. It was a little more positive for the Division 3 side though, who
fought out a nil-all draw in their first match since promotion from Division 4. The side were dominant through that grade, and will be out to make a mark in the championship round to build on those results.

Mid Canterbury United’s 15 grade side kept their train rolling with another commanding victory, this time winning 3-0 against St Albans Shirley to sit atop the competition with a game in hand over many of their rivals.
INDOOR BOWLS
Strong showing at nationals Matt Markham
Raelene Heads.
Ashburton lawn bowlers, Sandra Keith and Raelene Heads, have fallen at the quarter-final stage of the New Zealand Champion of Champion pairs event in Dunedin. Keith was forced to find a new playing partner for the event with her Canterbury Champion of Champions pairs partner, Rachel Davies, stuck in Australia due to Covid-19, so Heads stepped up to the plate to play in her former home region of Dunedin. The pair took on players from all over New Zealand who had won the equivalent event in their home regions, playing over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weekend started well for the pair with a win against the North Harbour team on Friday morning 15-9, but a loss in
the second round to Counties Manakau put them in a perilous position. Needing three wins from their four games to qualify for the post-section stage, the Allenton duo had to sit out the last round on Friday with the bye, meaning they sat on tenterhooks until Saturday morning when they got back on the green. Keith’s experience at the elite level shone as she guided the pair to success in both games on Saturday, winning 12-11 against Thames Valley in the first match, then 11-9 against Bay Of Plenty in the second to snare a knockout spot. On Sunday morning, Keith and Heads returned to the Hope Bowls Stadium again with dreams of making it to the national final, but their journey ended in the first round when they were knocked out by Central Otago, 12-17. The event was won by Auckland, who beat locals Otago in the final.

games on Saturday
John Morrison extended his lead on the national premiership to six over the weekend, although a last-race victory for nearest rival Sarah O’Reilly on Sunday still has her within striking distance. Morrison picked up a double on Friday night with Champagneandwine and then Deja Blue to move to 57 wins for the season, then O’Reilly won the last with Cha Cha B on Sunday. Morrison will miss two meetings through suspension, allowing a small window of opportunity for O’Reilly to narrow the gap.
STAC too strong The Mid Canterbury combined XV met the full force of a strong St Andrew’s College side at the weekend, losing 5-97 in the Miles Toyota Championship. Struck down by injuries and with only just enough players to field a team, the side was on the back foot from the outset, but still played their hearts out. Otto Markeo scored the Combined side’s try. The team gets a week off for holidays now before they return to play Shirley Boys’ High School on Saturday, July 24.
Bowlers mixed bag Ashburton indoor bowlers were unable to lift the annual Triangular Trophy on Saturday, going down to their Timaru rivals in a close day of bowls. The tournament, which also includes North Otago, saw both Ashburton and South Canterbury tied at the middle of the day, but the hosts were too strong in the afternoon. Ashburton did hit back on Sunday, however, when they were able to lift the Prattley Shield against South Canterbury. Played as a final hit-out before the Paterson Trophy, which is this weekend, the match includes the district’s top eight bowlers.
