Facing up to a litter problem Lili Haydon
Abbas Nazari
Ashburton artist Sarah Crispin is on a mission to creatively inform people about the environmental dangers of facemask littering. That mission saw Crispin recently win the photography section at the Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition for her piece, Evolution of Pollution. It’s a photographic documentation of dumped and used facemasks lying around Ashburton. That’s something which could become an even bigger issue now the Government has announced they are giving out masks for free in a bid to keep Covid-19 cases under control. “It’s an ironic take on how people want to stay safe (by wearing masks) but are wrecking something else in the process,” Crispin said. Crispin saw how bad the littering had become in Ashburton for the 15 minutes it took her to walk son Charlie to daycare. Over the space of only a few weeks, she photographed over 40 masks. “In the weekends, it’s even worse.” Crispin then took all the photos and turned them into an impressive piece, which is on display at the art gallery. Now she’s hoping her artwork will make people think twice about what they do with their
Bestselling author is guest speaker An Afghan refugee, who resettled in New Zealand earlier this century, is the guest speaker at the University of the Third Age (U3A) on July 26. Abbas Nazari fled the Taliban as a child and was resettled in New Zealand after his family was rescued by a containership. In 2019 he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the United States where he graduated with a Master’s in Security Studies from Georgetown University. His memoir, After the Tampa: From Afghanistan to New Zealand, is a bestseller. This year he was named as a finalist for the Young New Zealander of the Year. At the U3A meeting, Nazari will speak about his journey, his experiences of thriving in a foreign country, overcoming life’s obstacles and lessons learned on the way. The meeting, at the Ashburton Event Centre, is also open to members of the public who pay a $10 casual fee.

masks after they’ve taken them off. And if people do get lazy and toss them on the ground, then that is just one part of the environmental impact concern. Not only are they a massive new source of litter, but dumped facemasks could also entangle and kill wildlife and birds.
“You need to snip the straps (of the facemasks) as they can entangle our wildlife,” Crispin said. And Ashburton’s facemask concern is a global issue, as Crispin would well understand. Research in Portugal last year reportedly estimated that the world’s population wore a staggering 129 billion facemasks a
month. That figure was expected to continue to rise because facemasks normally get thrown away after a single use. Ashburton residents, though just a tiny subset of that global facemask figure, could still do their bit by following Crispin’s correct disposal call.

Weather wreaks havoc The facts
Lili Haydon Wild winds hammered Mid Canterbury yesterday, but this may have just been the calm before the storm with further bad weather predicted today. Ashburton District Council chief executive, Hamish Riach said Civil Defence staff were on duty from Sunday afternoon and yesterday, and have been fielding calls from members of the public. With wind speeds reaching 150 kms per hour yesterday, the town was a recipient of flying and smashed objects. Wild wind caused havoc at Perkins Engineering. Engineer, Mark Favel heard “an almighty crash” at 9am in the workshop. He came out from the workshop to discover a door had been ripped off its hinges and a window frame had fallen out. “It just took out the whole frame, it just went,” Favel said. Luckily half of the window remained intact, whereas the other half had smashed on the ground into a million pieces, he said. It would take him at least two hours to fix what he could, he said, but he planned to also brace it overnight. Over the road at Ashburton Toyota, branch manager, Scott Donaldson said a large piece of signage came off after taking a pounding in the wind. “It blew down onto the yard.” “We got the cars out of the way just in time,” Donaldson said. They shut off part of the road for 10 minutes while the signage was removed, to make sure noone would get hurt. Mobil Ashburton’s signage was also ripped out due to the battering wind, Donaldson said. Cameron Street residents
The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park and the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park were both closed yesterday morning due to the high winds. In South Canterbury, the Rangitata, Ahuriri, and all other rivers and streams expected to be carrying high flows until Wednesday. The Ashburton River South Branch and North Branch are expected to see flows that may test the weak flood protection framework in the upper reaches of the scheme from now until Wednesday. High flows are also expected in the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers. People with properties adjacent to rivers should also monitor their own situation, and move stock away from flood prone places. Any issues should be reported to council on 307-7700 – people can ring this number any time of the day or night. You can also receive text alerts from the council about emergencies, just text your postcode to 4196.
This 100-year-old tree on the Chiltons’ Cameron Street property succumbed to the wind in a big way, causing massive damage to their garage/sleepout. Nicky and Dave Chilton, had their hundred-year-old tree fall onto their garage/sleepout at 1pm yesterday. The tree also caused minor damage to Peter York’s car, which was parked on the roadside. “It’s just a pain, no-one’s sick or hurt,” Nicky said. With flying debris, more than 250 properties experienced power outages all over Ashburton district yesterday. EA Networks acting general manager Myles Connew said there was no need to panic as they have a reasonably robust network. However, he did recommend people in rural areas access a generator, as it’s unknown how long this weather will last. Federated Farmers president, David Acland was more concerned at the risk of flooding.

Part of Bridge Street, on the outskirts of town, had to be closed while fallen trees and branches were cleared from the road.
The Civil Defence Emergency Operations centre has not officially been activated, though it
is closely monitoring the situation and ready was to act, Riach said.

Christchurch to get new stadium, and pay for it Jonathan Leask
Christchurch will have its new multi-use arena and will pay for it, as far as Ashburton District Council’s chief executive understands. The Christchurch City Council voted to increase the budget for its multi-purpose arena, Te Kaha, to $683 million, entering into a fixed price design and construction contract with lead contractor BESIX Watpac, protecting it from the risk of further cost escalations. There have been suggestions that the rest of Canterbury help pay for it, but Ashburton District Council chief executive, Hamish Riach, believes the decision has locked it in as a city council funded project. “The Christchurch City Council decision to proceed has not required a contribution from any other council, so that says to me
the city council has agreed to fund the full $683m,” Riach said. “[They] agreed to fund and proceed without having asked for any support from other territorial authorities. “It could come to other councils in the future and seek contributions to lessen their own costs, but as far as I can tell the decision to proceed has been made re-
gardless of any of that.” Whether the city council will still ask its neighbours is yet to be determined, but finding options to produce any additional funding that doesn’t lump it all on its own ratepayers will be on the city council agenda. One solution is to turn other councils’ ratepayers into spades to dig themselves out of the fi-
nancial hole. Speaking at the city council’s meeting, former city councillor Helen Broughton said there needed to be a targeted rate across other councils in Canterbury to help pay the extra $150 million needed for the stadium. But stating an idea does not simply make it happen, and even if the city council does eventually
ask its neighbours for financial assistance, it doesn’t mean they will receive it. Riach said if any request did eventuate it would require public consultation before any decision was made. “If other councils like Ashburton were to be asked in the future, that request would have to go into our planning processes and involve consultation with our community.” Ashburton has just adopted its 2022-23 Annual Plan and won’t be preparing the next Annual Plan for consultation until around March, so theoretically if a request was made Riach said that would presumably be the earliest it could discuss it with the community.

THREE WATERS
Council to look into extending pipes Jonathan Leask Drinking and waste water options for the rapidly developing areas around Ashburton could be on the table in the next long-term plan (LTP). The Ashburton District Council has a $200,000 budget to investigate extending its drinking water and wastewater networks which will feed into planning for the next LTP. Council infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann,
said there is $100,000 funding for the 2022/23 financial year to investigate the possibility of providing a wastewater service to Residential D zoned land around Ashburton. Then there is $100,000 allocated from the 2021/22 year to carry out detailed design for potable water supply in the north-east of Ashburton, which McCann said is now planned to be done in conjunction with the wastewater investigations. “This funding was established to investigate the feasibility of providing wastewater services to the north-east Ashburton and other areas on the periphery of Ashburton zoned Residential D. “Whilst the water funding in-
cludes detailed design, the wastewater funding doesn’t include design of any extensions at this stage.” The feasibility study will determine options for servicing the areas, the likely rough order cost of each option, and how any extension might be funded, he said. “The main difficulty with extensions of this nature is that the landowners interested in developing their land may see the benefit of the service and be prepared to pay, but landowners who already have a satisfactory onsite disposal system and no interest in development may not want to pay.” Following the completion of the investigative work, McCann
said a council workshop will use the findings to guide the next steps in the process. For the north-west area of Ashburton there is already a $4.9m wastewater servicing project this year. McCann said the project will provide the physical infrastructure necessary for wastewater servicing to an area bounded by Farm Road, Racecourse Road, Allens Road, and Mill Creek. “This area has a higher priority, as it is zoned Residential C, typical urban residential development.” It was suggested at a recent council meeting that, with the impending handover of assets and projects to the new Three
Waters entities, it would make sense to have the Three Waters water projects in the pipeline as soon as possible to avoid them being put to the back of a long line of proposed projects across the country. McCann said it remains unclear how any planned works will be programmed and progressed in the transition to the new entities.

Lilyfields back in McIntosh hands Lili Haydon Tessa and Wayne McIntosh have bought the business Lilyfields and Lilies International off Wendy and David Millichamp. Wendy and David Millichamp have spent the past 27 years in Mount Somers carrying out mail orders, shows, garden days, and filling garden centre shelves all over the country. But the new operation will see the business return to Ashburton, and back to descendants of the original owners. Wayne’s grandfather actually brought the original Lilyfields business from Taranaki to Ashburton. The family transported the lilies by train in apple boxes many years ago.
“I couldn’t tell you how long ago, but it was pre-grandchildren (me),” Wayne said. Since 2001, the company has been run by the Millichamps, but now the couple has decided it’s time to sell and spend some much needed quality time with their family and friends. “We are reaching that age and its a physically demanding job,” Wendy said. “We still have our house and nursery.” Tessa who is a nurse and Wayne a builder will now be spending all of their spare time working hard over the next few months to get their eight hectares of land by Lake Hood ready for their display garden to open. The couple knew it would be the perfect place to set up the business. “There’s plenty of traffic in the weekend,” Wayne said. Right – Wendy and David Millichamp in their garden, looking forward to some down time and planting more plants and trees around their property.

New World Ashburton has started delivering rurally, but that hasn’t got everyone’s support. The New World food van has allowed the team to free up some space and use the bigger truck to drop off goodies to homes throughout Methven and Rakaia on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. But some Methven residents have expressed their support online for their local supermarket as a show of support for what the SuperValue owners have done for the community. “Don and Kelly, at Methven Supervalue, do a great job of supporting their local community,’’ Chris Brown said. “Surely if anyone (rurally) uses an Ashburton supermarket for their main shop, they are living in the wrong place. Methven always struck me as a very tight and supporting community.’’ Methven’s SuperValue owners have earned much respect for helping their community through floods and Covid lockdowns. And Kelly McDonald said they appreciated locals supporting locals, which included offering home deliveries. “This helps us give jobs to our locals (to) feed their families. (We) also sponsor our wonderful community in so many ways.’’ But down the road in Hinds, residents can’t wait for Ashburton New World to start delivering door-to-door to an area that isn’t serviced by a supermarket. Ashburton New World owner Jeremy Rooney said he knows some people have been disappointed that they haven’t started delivering in Hinds yet. But Rooney has plans to change that.

Sustainability key to win By Pat Deavoll
Phillip and Jocelyn Everest, Paul Everest and Sarah Hayman of Flemington Farm have been named 2022 Regional Supreme Winners in the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards. Run by the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, the awards champion sustainable farming and growing. The Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards were announced on July 14. Since 1989, the Everests have expanded this Ashburton property to the 255ha effective farm it is today, developing a sustainable beef and dairy business that balances the needs of people, animals, economics and the environment. In 2010, they developed the property into a dairy farm and currently milk 750 cows on a predominantly pasture-based system. When they established the 225ha milking platform that year, the best technology of the day was incorporated, and considered both labour and the environment. With environmental sustainability right at the core of this family business, they have successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen loss, and have now established more than
20km of shelter and riparian plantings. business outcomes. Oxford contractor takes out award Pat Deavoll
Deena Martin has earnt a reputation for going above and beyond for farmers.

Going above, beyond Pat Deavoll Deena Martin, from Drummond & Etheridge, Ashburton, has been named a finalist in the parts apprentice category of the New Zealand John Deere Apprentice Awards. Martin will now compete against four Australian parts apprentices for the hotly contested title of John Deere Parts Apprentice Technician of the Year. “Parts technicians, like Deena, play an integral role in ensuring the agriculture, forestry, and construction industries have a rapid flow of parts and equipment to their machines, which helps ensure businesses are working at peak capacity and productivity,” John Deere Australia and New Zealand managing director, Luke Chandler said.
The John Deere Technician Awards were established in 2021 to recognise the hard work and expertise technicians provide across Australia and New Zealand, and their drive to support businesses to be their most efficient and productive. In total, more than 100 nominations from across New Zealand and Australia were received for the awards, with finalists competing in six different categories, including Agriculture Service Technician of the Year, Construction & Forestry Service Technician of the Year, Turf Service Technician of the Year, Service Apprentice of the Year, Parts Technician of the Year and Parts Apprentice of the Year. The award winners will be announced at a gala event planned for August 5 in Brisbane, Queensland. Deena Martin commenced her apprenticeship in 2019, following a long stint working on dairy farms within the Mid Canterbury and Central Hawkes Bay regions. “I chose this career path as I tru-
ly love agriculture,” Martin said. “As a parts technician, I am supporting farmers every day as I know a fast supply of parts and equipment is crucial to their operations. “The farming industry is constantly evolving with new technology, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this growth as the industry begins to rely on innovative machinery more and more.” Martin has earnt a reputation for going above and beyond for farmers, which recently consisted of her driving more than 200km with a fully loaded trailer to urgently drop off parts, saving the customer the two days of standard freighting time. “Working with farmers is one of the best parts of my job, and I find it so rewarding to get a great result for them,” Martin said.
Following judging of eight finalists, Rural Contractors NZ is proud to announce the winners of the inaugural RCNZ Trainee Contractor of the Year awards. The awards were segmented to recognise excellence in contracting in both the North and South Islands. Josh Chittock from Oxford Agricultural Services in Oxford was the South Island winner. North Island’s winner was Mat Peart from Sims Contractors in Otaki. Chittock said being a finalist allowed him to extend himself and his interview skills. “It also made me realise the opportunities in the contracting sector are endless. The Hanzon app is a great way of recording all your skills in one place for future personal development. Get amongst it!”
Both winners will receive a trophy to keep and a training bursary of $3000 to be used to advance their careers. RCNZ CEO Andrew Olsen said all eight finalists did well with the judges and each would receive a certificate celebrating their achievements. “We will recognise Mat and Josh and all finalists at our upcoming roadshows which start in Palmerston North on August 8 and wraps up in Christchurch August 25.” Olsen said the awards could not have come together without the support of the judges and MPI which provided sponsorship. “We also acknowledge the fundamental role of the HanzonJobs program which allowed trainees to record all the work they were doing and RCNZ members, who supported the program and the need to get young Kiwis into the industry.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Social problems require creative and thoughtful approaches. Brainstorm about it. The more conscientious you are, the more opportunities you find to connect, help and raise the group. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Consider that interest you pursue when you’re supposed to be working. For happiness over the long haul, your go-to procrastination is a winning contender. Is there a way to make it your main deal? GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The places you go with people will be very important to the flavour of your connection. Regional influences will colour a love connection the way the soil in different places changes the taste of grape varietals. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Like your brain, your heart gets too comfortable in your everyday surroundings. Make it uncomfortable by spending time in another land. Travel makes you love anew. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The best gifts are those that don’t obligate you to the giver. Even a gift card comes with a responsibility to shop for yourself. You’ll receive loveliness today, and it comes without strings or requirements. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Though you believe your struggles happen in silence and privacy, there are some who can sense what you’re feeling. They may not know the particulars, but they want to be part of your solution. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Since you’re on a mission to make the world a little better, going about your business doesn’t feel like a grind at all. In fact, the lines between work and play are blurred. You’re in your zone. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): In chess and in relationships, the opening move is of utmost importance. The endgame has everything to do with it. Knowing that a story will play out like bookends, you’ll be careful with your open. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): A lifelong learner, you’re never satisfied with your current knowledge. The benefits to developing your mind will be made obvious when you spend time with those who have developed theirs. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): After a week of feeling as though your schedule owned you, it will be a liberation of sorts to own your time today. Next up, owning all the events that happen inside of it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Everyone is inclined to do what comes naturally; nature is a most persuasive force. You are better off doing the difficult, uncomfortable thing. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Shortcuts may get you to a point within a certain timeframe, but life’s lessons have a way of demanding to be learned. They can be skipped in one moment, but sooner or later, they will have their day.

What do we do with the All Blacks? S
o it’s come to this. The All Blacks are in one hell of a hole and no-one really has an idea how they can dig their way out of it. A crushing home series loss to Ireland, highlighted on Saturday by one of their worst halves in their history in an insipid opening 40 minutes, has left them at their lowest ebb for close to 40 years. Calls for head coach Ian Foster to get the chop are growing by the hour because the ABs, having lost four of their past five tests, appear to be in a downward spiral, which has clearly got the suits at NZ Rugby squirming. The brief press release by NZR CEO Mark Robinson on Sunday, saying the performances have been unacceptable and that a review would take place, was hardly a ringing endorsement for
Daryl Holden Fozzie and his team. But what would a second review in six months prove? Remember, they had one after the failed Northern Hemisphere tour last November. Who would conduct it? Would the board then make a call by themselves, with little rugby playing or coaching experience to call on to make such a decision? So many questions. So many uncertainties. The only hope Foster has is that history shows that All Blacks coaches are never sacked mid-season, even when they
appear to have lost the plot completely. That was the case in 1998 when John Hart’s team dropped five tests in a row, but he somehow survived.
“
serious consideration. Why? Because Sam Cane’s subbing off with just under a quarter of the test to go on Saturday, with the test still in the balance, was
If NZR suddenly sent Foster packing now that would be admitting they bungled his original appointment.
And if NZR suddenly sent Foster packing now that would be admitting they bungled his original appointment, which many believe was based mostly on nepotism, carried out on the say-so of his mate, Sir Steve Hansen. Harsh? Yes, but possibly true. There’s also no precedent for a reigning All Blacks captain to be dumped mid-season either but, clearly, that must be under
telling. He gives his all, and his courage cannot be questioned with the significant injuries he’s come back from, but he’s not the best all-round openside flanker in the country. End of story. That mantle should sit with either the almost super-human Ardie Savea or Blues’ captain Dalton Papalii. And if Savea was moved to openside, and perhaps made the new captain in the
process, then the All Blacks – wait for it – could actually play a specialist at No. 8 like Hoskins Sotutu or the still mysteriously unwanted Cullen Grace from the Crusaders. Cane, as nice a fellow as he appears to be, has simply become a specialist captain and he’s in danger of becoming as unpopular with our rugby-mad nation as his beleaguered coach. Right now, they’re both oddson to be casualties from the Irish series, and the ongoing selection and strategy flaws from the past two years under Foster’s reign. It’s a rugby mess that’s left our world cup hopes in tatters, just 14 months out from their crucial tournament opener against hosts and hot favourites France. Something has to change. Removing Foster and Cane may well just be a starting point.

Locals to the fore on track Matt Markham
Mid Canterbury connections enjoyed success across all three race meetings in Canterbury over the weekend. It started with driving wins for Ricky May and John Morrison on Thursday night then stretched into another excellent performance from local galloper Commitment on Friday at Riccarton, before Brent White stole the show at Addington on Sunday with a training brace. The win of Commitment on Friday however was, without doubt, the highlight. The Robyn Ayton-trained gelding took 13 starts to break maiden status, but has now picked up two wins in his last three starts and is fashioning a tidy record on the track with two wins, nine placings and a further four either fourth or fifth placings for more than $32,000 in stakes. The son of Per Incanto, who is also raced by Ayton, jumped quickly on the synthetic on Friday and found a decent spot on
the fence behind the leaders before jockey Michael McNab was able to navigate into clear space halfway down the straight where the pair burst through and raced away to win comfortably. On Thursday night at Addington, May produced a long-priced winner when Get Back snuck home by a narrow margin for Motukarara trainer, Murray Edmonds. It gave May his 18th win in the sulky this season. Then, Morrison broke an almost month-long driving duck in the sulky later in the night when he reined home Classy Dancer for one of his biggest supporters, Tony Barron. Morrison hadn’t won a race since the middle of June but was back in the winners’ circle after receiving a sweet trip with the talented pacer. Then on Sunday, back at Addington, Brent White was the star of the show with a training double. He produced both Sassy Star and Kohli Trouble to win in vastly different circumstances. Sassy Star was heavily supported to break maiden status and did so with relative ease in front of Kimberly Butt, but Kohli Trouble wasn’t fancied to win later in
The Robyn Ayton trained Commitment burst through and grabbed success at Riccarton on Friday. the day, but did enough under the urging of Blair Orange to get past a brave Jerry Garcia in the run to the line. Sassy Star is raced by Dave and
Gaye Luke, and just another instalment in a long-line of winners for their breed. Kohli Trouble picked up the second win of his career and
took his trainer to 18 wins for the season, halfway towards his best ever tally of 37, which was set during last year’s extended season.

Methven clear, but race not over By Matt Markham & Steve Devereux
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Methven have pushed themselves clear of the pack ahead of the final round of the Watters Cup pool play this weekend with a dominant victory on Saturday, but they can ill-afford to start popping the champagne bottles just yet, with their position still under sufferance. A bonus-point win against Rakaia on Saturday took them three points clear of the pack in the race to the top two spots in the standings – but with Celtic and Southern both lurking behind them, just a victory away from getting over the top of them, there’s no room for relaxation. And Methven’s biggest challenge, Celtic, lies in wait for them this weekend, in a match which could well determine who finishes top-qualifier. Under the mountain on Saturday afternoon, Methven were clinical in beating Rakaia 32-7, although things never looked clear-cut throughout the first half as their plucky visitors withstood a number of challenges. A good solo effort from Joshua Harkness to beat a couple of defenders from 20 metres out opened the scoring after 10 minutes, but it was another 20 before Sam Peek latched onto a ball out wide to extend the lead. Rakaia bounced back with a penalty try in the 46th minute of the match to see the game still evenly poised at 12-7 to the hosts
as they went to the sheds. What Methven have proven through the second half of the season is that if you give them a sniff, then they’re ready and willing to take full advantage of it and make teams pay. Three of those moments came in the second half, and it was enough to shut Rakaia out of the match as Harry Bonifant, Michael Hennings and the ever-present Reuben Early scored tries to seal a confident victory. After a stalemate when they last met, this weekend’s clash against Celtic looks set to be another classic match, but a few cursory glances will also be pointed toward Rakaia, where they will host Southern who are far from out of contention. They hit a minor blip on Saturday though, when Celtic defended their home ground like men in the trenches to eke out a 19-12 win in a hard-fought encounter. But, after the first 40 minutes, the sizeable crowd of Celtic faithful were justifiably looking a bit concerned. Southern looked every inch a champion side; parity in the scrums, and a backline looking slick with every attack launched, and it was 15 minutes in before Celtic actually made it into Southern territory. Ben Early went over for Southern as a result of the constant pressure, with Celtic making errors in the face of a constant wave

of blue and white jerseys coming at them. The host’s lineout is so often a polished unit, but when the visitors have in their arsenal two of the best exponents in that area Mid Canterbury has, Eric Duff and Logan Bonnington, then there’s going to be problems; and there was. Will Mackenzie, while having a titanic personal battle with opposite Liam McCormack, was still giving his outsides a heap of ball to play with, and centre Thomas Middleton always looked on the verge of breaking the line, and did
Short and sharp Methven 32 (Joshua Harkness, Harry Bonifant, Sam Peek, Michael Hennings, Reuben Early tries; Tom Reekie 2 conv, pen) Rakaia 7 (penalty try; Thomas Whittaker conv.) Celtic 19 (Raitube Vasurakuta try; Nathan McCloy conv, 4 pen) Southern 12 (Ben Early, Thomas Middleton tries; Middleton conv).
so several times, with Matt McAtamney popping up from fullback to add to the threats across the park. But, apart from the early try, the Celtic defence held. For all their domination, Southern still only had five points on the board, and late in the half a fine 40/20 kick from first five Nathan McCloy gave Celtic a rare look inside the Southern 22. They couldn’t capitalise, but surely went into the break reasonably happy, down by a solitary try after absorbing a huge amount of pressure. The Celtic coaches must have driven that point home; in the second half it was a different green machine that rolled out. With a bit more ball to play with the backs were making inroads, and it wasn’t long before Raitube Vasurakuta did what he does best, when given just a few metres to play with. Busting tackles down the left flank from
the halfway mark, Vasurakuta overran McAtamney’s final desperate tackle attempt, and Celtic were on the board. McCloy had brought his kicking boots along and converted from wide out. Celtic roared back on attack, and Southern conceded a penalty right in front, which McCloy duly converted. He repeated the dose from 30-odd metres five minutes later, and scoreboard pressure was growing for the visitors. Another one from near halfway with ten to go made it 16-5, and Celtic were well on top. Yet another penalty in the 79th minute sealed the deal for the home side, but referee’s time was extensive, and Southern lifted themselves off the canvas, as top sides do, and spent ten minutes on attack. They were rewarded with a last-minute converted try, producing a better-looking 19-12 final score.

Finalists found in Senior B competition Matt Markham The finalists for this year’s Second Grade Cup, the pinnacle of Senior B rugby, have been found. Methven will host Celtic in one match-up this week for the final prize of the season, while Hampstead will host Mt Somers in the other after both sides picked up wins on the weekend, in very differing circumstances. Hampstead didn’t have to lift a finger. With a top two spot secured, the default by Allenton meant they only had to keep an eye on what was happening in the Methven and Mt Somers clash, with a loss for Methven meaning they’d finish top qualifier on the points table which combines both the first round and then the Centennial Mug. Methven got the job done against a plucky Mt Somers side though, winning 22-5 but Hampstead’s unbeaten run through the Centennial Mug saw them winners of the second round. In Methven, 19 unanswered points in the first half for the host threatened to see the
game blow right out, but Mt Somers kept digging away throughout the second half and never let Methven get a really strong grip on the match. They scored twice through Ryan Ashworth in the first half with Chris Lock also dotting down, but a penalty to Charlie Brown was all they mustered in the second 40, with Mt Somers No.8 Cam Haynes getting his side their only points with a try in the 57th minute. A 40-22 win for Celtic was enough to see them hold down fourth spot and advance to the next round this week. Playing in the curtain-raiser to the two clubs’ Watters Cup match, there were points aplenty. Celtic ran in six tries, including doubles to both Elyh McKibbin and Ryan Stokes, while Jayden Faunge had a good day with the boot, kicking five conversions and scoring a try himself in a 15-point haul. Southern scored four tries of their own as well, but it wasn’t enough to get over the top of a determined Celtic side who will now trek to Methven this weekend to play in another Watters Cup curtain-raiser. Saturday’s other match saw Rakaia end on a high with a 36-17 win over Collegiate in town.

Bowlers dominate in Blenheim win Matt Markham
Ashburton will take its place in the top flight of a new-look inter district indoor bowls competition next year, after successfully defending the Paterson Trophy in Blenheim over the weekend. In a dominant performance, the green-and-golds led from start to finish and never really looked back, ruling the roost over rival sides from Golden Bay-Motueka, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, and Canterbury. Traditionally the winning team from the zone would advance through to the Welch Trophy, taking on the other five zone winners from around the country for overall supremacy, but New Zealand Indoor Bowls has altered the course and next year will bring in a division-based competition in order to try and ensure all districts get an even shot at winning. The weekend’s results were used to determine who landed in which division for the inaugural event in 2023. The eight-strong Ashburton team made the best possible start to their title defence on the weekend, claiming an imposing 33 points out of a possible 36 in the opening round on Friday night.

Football postponed
Footballers across the region sat out another Saturday of play on the weekend after Mainland Football made a call on Friday to halt all of the weekend’s play. While many of the junior grades were having a break during the school holidays anyway, both the Mid Canterbury United Senior and Senior Reserve matches that were scheduled for Saturday afternoon were put on the backburner in order to protect the playing fields for the final stages of the season.
Tough start The Mid Canterbury Under 18 netball side endured a tough start, as predicted, at the New Zealand Under 18 Netball championships in Christchurch yesterday. The local side took on the might of Auckland A to kickstart their campaign, and while fighting valiantly right to the very end, were no match for the powerhouse region, losing 46-7. The side were set to take to the court late yesterday afternoon for their second match against Central Lakes.
Heartland 10s
The winning Ashburton Indoor Bowls Paterson team from the weekend. That run of form faltered slightly on Saturday morning, but the side was back into its work on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night to build a decent lead that they didn’t relent during Sunday’s final round, finishing with 128.5 points, 19.5 clear of Canterbury, who finished second.
Of the 48 players competing in the event, Ashburton players all finished in the top 10 for individual performances for the weekend with Murray Bassett, Mat Bassett and Russell Ellis best on the floor with 12 wins each from their 15 games. The win is the first step for the

side this year with another major competition ahead. Last year’s Welch Trophy was postponed due to Covid, but will be played in Hamilton in September, where they will take on teams from Auckland, Waikato, North Taranaki, Hutt Valley and Southland.
Methven will be alive with women’s rugby this weekend as the Heartland Rugby 10s competition comes to town. The competition, which began last year, involved teams from Mid Canterbury, Buller, North Otago, West Coast and South Canterbury and comes in off the back of a successful first leg out at Hinds earlier this month. Members of the Black Ferns rugby side will be in attendance during the afternoon with the Women’s Rugby World Cup in hand.
While the weather worsened as the weekend progressed, Saturday was a fine afternoon for a spot of sport. Daniel Alvey got out and about to capture some of the action.
