River vulnerabilities ‘not ideal’ Adam Burns There was a hint of deja vu in the Ashburton district as the South Island was once again clobbered by historic volumes of rainfall. It was the West Coast that copped the brunt of what was the second major flooding catastrophe in a matter of weeks, but Mid Canterbury could not avoid fresh damage. The Ashburton District Council was still monitoring the state of the district’s roads with 10 closures still in place. Precautionary boil water notices remained for the Methven and Methven-Springfield water schemes. Residents were being urged to use the water tanker in the Methven town centre. Environment Canterbury (ECan) river officers spoke of the exposure that remained along the Ashburton River last week during flood recovery public meetings. By daylight on Saturday, water was again surging from a breach of the north branch of the river. Farmer Mark McDonald had a por-

tion of fence wash away from his Ashburton Forks property at the weekend and was due to have about $40,000 worth of repairs to his laneways this week following the May floods. “We were waiting for them to dry out enough to get them back and to redo them,” he said. He said the situation was not ideal. “You just got to get more shingle out of the river and shore up the stopbanks,” he said. “It’s not unfixable . . . it’s just maintaining the river channel I guess.” Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown, who was in Blenheim for the LGNZ conference at the weekend, was left stranded as the weather converged. “I couldn’t leave until yesterday,” he said. “When we were there from the Friday, it was similar to the rain that we had in Ashburton, it was non-stop dropping. Having been in a similar boat recently, Brown said he would probably reach out to community leaders along the West Coast.

Preece to transform college Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton College principal Ross Preece says he’s prepared to transform his college to provide students with the “tools to thrive in a future world”. Preece’s innovative thinking has come about after his return to Ashburton following a sabbatical, which saw him visit 12 schools in the North and South Islands, focusing on the curriculum for Years 9 and 10.

His challenge now was to continue to embed essential qualities into the curriculum that students needed for future employment. That included attributes such as problem solving, resilience, creative thinking, oral communication and the ability to collaborate. “They are the things that, in the future, will make them an effective employee,” he said. “I’m looking at how I can transform Ashburton College to meet those needs. It’s a long game I’m playing.” The schools he visited on his sabbatical were on the same journey and Preece was gratified that Ashburton College was al-

ready ahead of many of them. Already, his Year 9 and 10 students have the option of two models. One is the traditional curriculum, the other is cross-subject collaboration called innovation, which teaches many of the attributes that Preece regarded as fundamental to future education. “Over 50 per cent of students have opted for innovation. For Year 9s, that involves six out of 11 classes. “We recognise the future is going to be different and I want to take Ashburton College in that direction.” But he knows he must take his staff and the community with him on the journey.

“The challenge for staff is they are expert in their subjects, they’re good at content, but this is a whole new ball game,” he said. “Parents, who’ve done well in the existing system, need to understand the rationale for change.” When the new term starts next week, his priority was to explore how the new attributes could be evaluated as part of the existing system. “How do we teach, assess and report the development of these necessary future attributes?” he said. “It’s important for us to measure creativity.”

Further investigations of Ashburton Bridge Adam Burns Heavy rainfall across the South Island in recent days has prompted further investigation of the Ashburton Bridge. The 90-year-old State Highway 1 overpass has been put through the wringer in recent weeks, first with the May 3031 Canterbury floods and again at the weekend as the elements turned on the top half of the South Island. A Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) spokeswoman confirmed that a reassessment to the bridge would take place to ensure the repairs made to the bridge piers were still holding, following another dose of climbing river levels. “Based on that we intend to get an update out on the fix for

it in coming days.” Overnight repairs to the bridge were already scheduled for this week, but NZTA said that the bridge may require further traffic closures this week. The Ashburton River escalated to more than 382 cubic metres of water per second by Saturday morning, although this was only a fraction of what transpired seven weeks ago which saw the river soar to 1700 cumecs. The State Highway 1 bridge over the Ashburton River was closed when heavy flooding caused a pier to slump 13 centimetres in the wake of the floods. No indication was provided by NZTA as to when debris near the site would be cleared.

Mt Somers tracks and huts now open Maddison Gourlay

The Mt Somers Walkways Society have put in over 200 voluntary hours to get their tracks and huts open again – and their efforts have been praised. The momentous rainfall at the end of May caused severe damage to the tracks, with several washouts and slips forcing them to be closed. A group of 15 members from the society put in the hours to get them usable and they’re pleased to get the track open again, though with work still to be done. “The tracks are not as good as previously [before the floods] but the Mt Somers Walkways Society members and will gradually improve the usability,” Mt Somers Walkways Society chairman, Charles Ross, said. “The Mt Somers track remains open at this stage after the rain over the weekend. We have not had any reports of any significant issues on the track,” Department of Conservation’s senior ranger Murray Thomas said. Thomas was also full of praise for the volunteer efforts.

Work going on at Woolshed Creek Hut in preparation to make it usable to the public. “There are still some small slips and washouts remaining in some places, so users should take extra care and be prepared for the track to be more difficult than they remember in some

places.” While the Mt Somers track was open again, the Sharplin Falls section remained closed, which it had been for the past seven years due to earth-

quake-triggered rock-falls. But the society was waiting on the green light from DOC so it could begin working to reopen the popular track into Sharplin Falls by summer.

Unemployment level at decade high Sue Newman The number of registered job seekers in the Ashburton District has almost trebled in the past eight years. Ministry of Social Development figures for the June quarter show the number of people looking for work has risen from 279 in 2014 to 729 this year. Numbers have been rising slow-

Tinwald lights business case nears completion

ly over that eight year period, but they surged last year as the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown made itself felt in the job market. In its climbing numbers, Ashburton is running counter to the national trend that shows that is marked by falling numbers. And the reverse trend can be counted in total benefit numbers too, with national figures showing an 11,193 drop for the June quarter. The number of people receiving a main benefit – job seeker, sole parent, supported living and ‘other’ benefits sits at 1539

for the June quarter, 500 higher than in June 2014. Minister for Social Development Carmel Sepuloni is attributing the continuing national fall in benefit numbers to the success of the government’s plan to increase work focused support for job seekers. Some of the most successful programmes were Flexi-Wage and Apprenticeship Boost, she said. “And I’ve been particularly impressed by the results from the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs, that’s created 1326 sustainable, full

time jobs across regional New Zealand.” Nationally, the latest statistics bucked the seasonal trend that traditionally saw a rise in benefit numbers in the June quarter and the size of the fall this year was a significant milestone in the country’s recovery from Covid-19, Sepuloni said. “While we have been successful in getting those who have recently lost their jobs back into work, what is pleasing with the statistics is that nearly 10,000 people who have been receiving a benefit for over a year, found work in the June quarter.”

The business case for the Tinwald corridor improvements, including traffic signals, is almost complete. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed the business case was nearing completion for the road upgrades that involved the provision of new traffic signals at the State Highway 1, Agnes and Lagmhor streets intersection. The improvements also included widening the flush median and improving right turn bays, including at Graham Street. A NZTA spokeswoman said detailed design, consenting and property acquisition would run into 2022, with construction expected to start in 2023 and be completed in 2024. The funding allocation was now up to $15 million as part of the increased Government funding for the Canterbury package of New Zealand upgrade projects, the spokeswoman said. In April, NZTA asked for public feedback on the proposed changes to the SH1 corridor through Tinwald, with a focus on Lagmhor Road and Agnes Street intersections. There had been “lots of interest and suggestions from the public and key stakeholders which will feed into the next stage” the spokeswoman said. Some submissions pointed to issues further south at Grahams Road, the road leading to Lake Hood, with suggestion of shifting the traffic signals there, installing a second set or installing a roundabout. But NZTA’s proposal aimed to encourage traffic away from Graham Street, instead using McMurdo Street and the traffic signals at Agnes Street for turning right onto the highway. There was also a right turn bay from SH1 onto Graham Street as part of the proposal.

Moderate injuries One person has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries after a crash between a car and a motorbike just after 6pm on Ashburton Staveley Road on Sunday.

A 98-year-old house on a large Harrison Street section is ready for relocation to make way for a five home housing development.

Sue Newman For almost a century a large wooden house has stood four square on just shy of 3000 square metres of land on Harrison Street, but next year, that land will house five families rather than one. Earlier this year, its third own-

ers in 98 years moved out, opening the door for the property to begin a new life, with the land to be subdivided into sections and the house relocated to Rakaia. And for builder Gaby Jansen the Harrison Street section has become an opportunity to provide additional houses to help to meet the solid demand for homes in Ashburton. The road to completing those five homes will be a long one, Jansen said, but the first steps are being taken this week with

the removal of a number of large trees ahead of the removal of the existing house. Once the site is cleared and the large hedge fronting Harrison Street is removed, site development will begin. A large elm tree that carries protected status under the Ashburton District plan will be retained. The project is still in its early stages, with subdivision plans and design work still to be finalised, but he anticipates work on the homes will begin in the new

year. “We’ve got a bit of a sketch plan at the moment and the houses will all be three bedroom with a double garage. “We’ll put in a new central access way and there will be three houses to the left of that on the hill side and two on the right,” Jansen said. House lots in central Ashburton, particularly those of a decent size, were hard to come by and were keenly sought, he said. “This will be a great project to get our teeth into.”

There may have been an early but overcooked breakfast for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday. Two crews attended a fire in the bakery at Countdown on East Street at around 6.05am. The fire had self-extinguished by the time the crews arrived, but they checked over the scene before departing by 7.10am.

Lotto win Someone in Ashburton was one of three Lotto players to have each scored $333,333 in Saturday’s draw. The Ashburton and Auckland players both bought their tickets via the My Lotto app, while a Christchurch player purchased their ticket at Relay Christchurch Airport. Powerball was not struck and has rolled over to Wednesday night, where the jackpot will be $15 million.

Pricey pooches of the workin’ variety Maddison Gourlay Talk about expensive pooches. Sixty working dogs have sold for an average of about $4000 at the 65th annual sheep and cattle dog

sale in Mayfield. This year’s event, at the Mayfield A&P Showgrounds, had a total of 60 dogs entered, with 48 of those being sold, topping last year’s event where 38 were sold. There were 40 heading dogs and 20 huntaways auctioned off. Omarama’s Scott Hunter’s fouryear-old huntaway, Izzi, sold for the top dollar of $7200 which was well

shy of last year’s record breaking price of $13,200 for a dog. “What happened last year [a dog being sold for $13,200] is usually just a one-off,” PGG Wrightson Livestock administrator Murray Campbell said. Sellers had come from as far away as Wanaka and all the way up to Nelson as well as two coming from the North Island, Campbell said, but the

top dollar went to the top dog. “It was definitely a good dog.” “All the dogs that were there gave a good display,” Campbell said. During the auction, each dog had the opportunity to showcase their skills when they worked a pen or yard of sheep supplied by a local farmer. The average price for a dog on the day was around $4000, he said.

Trust appoints new chairman

Reveley steps down, Dondertman steps up Heather Chalmers The Canterbury floods and a shortage of farm workers means the need to provide mental wellness support for the rural community is as great as ever, says retiring Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust (RST) chairman Peter Reveley. “There are many farmers that are starting to look very tired out there because they are one or two staff short. “They will be working every weekend with calving, lambing and getting crops in the ground. Without extra workers, people are on the stress line, so hopefully we get a good spring.” Reveley is stepping down as chairman after eight years in the role, but said he would still retain an involvement with the organisation. Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Josh Dondertman is the new chairman after two years as a trustee. Dondertman, who sharemilks 1300 cows at Coldstream, agreed that staffing issues were adding another layer of stress on farmers, particularly as the industry approaches its busiest time of the year. “There are not a lot of people looking for work and that is making it very hard to attract people.” Originally from the North Island, Dondertman has previously been involved in dairying in Tasmania and an equity partnership in Culverden, before moving to Mid Canterbury. “I have some interesting life experiences and am passionate about helping people,” Dondertman said. Reveley, a Mt Somers farmer and former five-term Ashburton

Mt Somers farmer Peter Reveley is stepping down after eight years as chairman of the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust. Inset –Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust’s new chairman Josh Dondertman. District councillor, said he became involved with RST after it assisted him with sheep caught in the 1992 big snow. He has been a trustee since 2006. After a strategic review of RST two years ago, it moved from response and recovery in emergency situations such as snow, fire and flooding to now being a welfare organisation. As a result, new people were brought in who had great skills, Reveley said. “They can take on virtually anything there is, so I can take a step

back, as there is a good team.” While administrators and co-ordinators were paid, many of those involved with RST, including himself, were volunteers. RST can provide confidential support with farming and business advice, financial information, and mental health and counselling services. “You get a lot of calls because people know you and are just looking for a bit of confidential advice about where to go next.” People may need counselling not just for on-farm stresses, but other issues.

These people also required follow-up calls to check that they “stay on track”. RST had gone from having one or two meetings a year to online zoom meetings almost every fortnight to keep up with everything that was happening, Reveley said. “It’s a pretty busy little organisation at the moment.” Reveley said he was involved with assisting farmers deal with mycoplasma bovis after becoming caught up in the eradication programme himself. farmers had been confirmed with the cattle disease within months of each other. As Mid Canterbury had taken a disproportionate hit from the M. bovis outbreak, with more than 40 farms having to cull stock, RST has an M. bovis welfare co-ordinator Frances Beeston. After receiving 57 phone calls before lunchtime during the Canterbury flooding, Reveley said he expected volumes to drop following his retirement. An event to acknowledge Peter Reveley’s work with RST will be held later in the year.

OPINION

Reflecting on rural uprising By David Clark

I

have been reflecting on Friday’s farmer protests while going about my day feeding stock and delivering grain. The protests in my view were well organised, peaceful and met with tremendous public support. The political response got me thinking. Minister for the Environment David Parker said on radio that he wasn’t backing away from ensuring Kiwis can swim in their rivers. We can and do safely swim in the river bordering our farm and in Lake Hood which is filled with river water. However, I cannot swim in the Avon or the Heathcote or indeed many Auckland beaches during summer. Minister for Agriculture Damien O’Connor and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern have variously said the the government need to impose regulations and restrictions on farmers to ensure we are able to sell our agricultural produce to overseas markets and demonstrate that we are addressing environmental concerns, water degradation and methane from livestock. New Zealand’s farmers are already one of, if not the most efficient producers of food in the world from a carbon perspective. We have the second best water quality in the OECD and produce

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers’ president David Clark some of the highest quality grain, seed and horticultural products in the world. Why don’t we talk of these successes? Can we do even better? You betcha we can and we are on a

path of constant improvement. New Zealand farmers receive one of the highest unsubsidised farmgate milk prices in the world, our beef and lamb are at almost record prices as are our horticultural products. We

simply can’t produce enough to meet with the demand for the food we grow. It is these food products that are keeping the lights on in this country. Some said the protest was a

bunch of farmers driving flash new tractors and utes. I would say it was a demonstration of the investment by farmers in world leading technology to maximise performance, including modern, low emission Tier 3 and 4 engines. Would the public prefer farmers were driving 1970’s Belarus Tractors and Lada Cars? Is that what we would view as success for our nation? What farmers were speaking out about was a raft of policies being put in place with little or no consultation that will achieve nothing more than making food production more expensive, reduce our productivity and result in much more of NZ farmland being planted in pine trees by overseas investors speculating on our Emissions Trading Scheme. As currently written, the Freshwater Rules would require our mixed arable farming system revert to dry land sheep grazing. That concerns me. But above all else, farmers like me have had a gutsful of being vilified to suit a political agenda. We have had a gutsful of being slapped and that is why farmers took the very unusual step of taking to the streets. David Clark is the president of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers

Appreciation from rural contractors Rural contractors have been given some lifesaving tips and reciprocated with their own tip in the form of a $3000 donation. uckle up and try to enjoy the ride. The Olympic Games are about to start and they’ll be like no other. And I’m not just talking about the dark Covid cloud hanging over the Tokyo Games, which, as we all know, were unusual from the get-go because they’re starting a year later than scheduled because of that dreaded pandemic. These games will be different and even bizarre in so many ways. Because even though it’s 2021, officially these games will still be referred to as the 2020 Olympics. All the branding that was designed with last year in mind will still be used, meaning the medals will still say: “Tokyo 2020”. That’s a gold medal for weirdness right there. And perhaps weird is an apt

There won’t be any. Overseas fans were banned months ago. Now no Japanese spectators will be allowed in stadiums and arenas around Tokyo – both indoor and outdoor venues. Athletes will only be allowed into the Olympic Village for a few days around their event,

there will be constant coronavirus testing. They’ll be kept in their bubbles without any chance to meet the public, which may be a good thing because more than half the population of Tokyo wanted the

Goodbye to my Rangi

Camping fees hiked up on Rangitata campers M any times, over the past few years I have written about the fun we have each summer at the Rangitata Camping Ground. Not so long ago I had Bruce Bell say to me: “I must get down to Rangitata for a weekend myself and check it out. You make it sound like a magical place.” Very little cellphone coverage, hooning around on the four wheelers and doing our very best to look like fishermen are all part of the attraction, but mostly it’s about getting away from it all and spending quality time with the family. Sadly, that won’t be happening this year. As good a job as I did selling the place to Bruce, I must have duplicated that to someone in the bloody stupid ideas section at the council.

Phill Hooper

OFF THE AIR over the winter months. It gets bloody cold down there as you’d imagine. I think most of the hut holders shy away from the place over winter as well. The beauty of the camping ground for us is that it’s cheap! Maybe too cheap. But let’s be honest, the facilities down there are very basic. Four showers for the whole camp. A small kitchen with one fridge and one chest freezer. A washing machine that costs you $3 to use. They don’t even have anything to dry your hands on in the toilets!

reasons for the change were “ Several conveyed to me, with the underlying reason being ratepayers were having to cover a shortfall at the camp. The power cost was mentioned several times, especially over the winter months.

Last week we read a post on the Rangi camping ground book signalling changes in fees for the upcoming season. Not just small changes either! For my family, they have more than doubled! There was no explanation for the dramatic rise in fees. Very quickly the disgruntled comments started appearing. Shortly afterwards the council’s property manager’s contact details were posted, so I thought I’d get it straight from the horse’s mouth. Why are our fees set to more than double? Several reasons for the change were conveyed to me, with the underlying reason being ratepayers were having to cover a shortfall at the camp. The power cost was mentioned several times, especially over the winter months. Interestingly, I don’t know anyone who camps at Rangi

I would have thought it would run on the smell of an oily rag. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about any of those facilities, we totally accept that that’s what you get when you stay at a basic camping ground. Last summer our campsite was mainly sand and dust and we had to dig trenches in the sand to drain the lake that appeared in our awning during some heavy rain down there. All part of the fun and challenges of camping. But I’m guessing now, with the big increase in fees, that area will be nicely grassed as you get at comparable camping grounds (fees wise). Yeah right! Does the person who came up with the idea to more than double fees for the mainly LOCAL people who camp there really think that’s the answer? Last Christmas holidays at Rangi was the quietest I have

seen in several years; I can’t see a doubling in fees changing that. I have spoken to several regulars who will not be going back this summer, one even said he was selling his caravan. How sad is that?

Sadly, we also will be voting with our feet if this fee structure remains in place. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Grumpy as

YOUR VIEW Defending the ute The Labour/Green Government has picked one vehicle to attack – the ute. The ute has come from a line of farm work vehicles like Austin, Commer and Bedford small farm trucks, which were difficult with kids going to town, or feeding out and not too good in muddy paddocks. Those small trucks have evolved into the ute of today. There’s more safety for the kids, much better for the trip to town. Those same utes tow horse floats, trailers for farm merchandise, farm implements.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

You can add they are also used by building, fencing, plumbing, electrical contractors and vets. The list goes on. There are a good number of recreational users that choose the double cab ute for their practical and versatile use in towing boats and caravans. The penalty for purchasing a new ute is very misplaced. New ute, new technology. Improved emission standards. The money collected from ute sales will have no impact on our environment anyway. Floods strand bowlers A local group of indoor bowlers found themselves in the heart of a state of emergency at the weekend while in the West Coast to compete in an annual representative fixture. The Ashburton Paterson Indoor Bowls squad, comprising of eight players plus management and supporters, were in Westport from Friday through to Sunday during some of the most intense flooding the area has seen in recent years. Evacuated from their motel on Friday afternoon, the group were relocated in two separate accommodation venues with the help of locals before the tournament was officially cancelled on Saturday evening. Guardian sports reporter, Matt Markham, was a member of the squad, and said the entire experience was surreal, and that they headed to the Coast on Friday morning on the advice of locals who were unexpecting of just how bad things would get. “At one point on the way over we stopped and made a few phone calls to people in Westport to see what things were like, and we were told at that point the roads were clear and that we could carry on,” he said. “Getting there wasn’t an issue. “The roads were fine, through the Buller Gorge the water was quite high, but at that stage it looked all right.” As well as the Ashburton team, squads from Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay and Motueka and also Canterbury made the trip to Westport, with all arriving on Friday afternoon. Upon arriving in Westport the group had settled into their accommodation for an hour before Civil Defence and Police ordered the venue evacuated. “We were staying about 30 metres from

probably ever realised just how bad it actually was. “I’ve been going to Westport for nearly 20 years now and I’ve certainly never seen the river that full. “It wasn’t until we saw some aerial shots of the town that I think it really hit home just what we were in the middle of.” With the tournament off and the Buller bridge closed, the side were stranded until Sunday morning, when it opened again and were able to get out and head home. A number of other teams, particularly those from higher points in the South Island were forced to stay on in Westport until yesterday, until roads leading back up the island were re-opened.

With less than a third of the Paterson Trophy tournament played on the weekend, bowlers get a chance to regroup and refocus before a rescheduled event in a fortnight. After advice from local authorities led to the tournament being cancelled on Saturday, managers and representatives from the six districts who were there competing in Westport decided to shift the event to Saturday, July 31. And instead of returning to Westport, teams will now travel to Nelson and begin from scratch again, with all points gained from the matches that did get played, voided. The decision was made in the best interest of all teams involved. Ashburton had made a solid start to the event and sat in second place after four of the 15 scheduled games for the weekend, just behind leaders Canterbury. Many sides will face the potential of having to reshuffle their squads for the event, with player availability at such short notice set to be an issue for many of the teams. The winner of the tournament will then go forward to compete in the national final, the Welch Trophy, in Hamilton in early September with the other five winners found over the weekend.

HARNESS RACING

Sarah’s star shoots even higher With her career already on a massive upswing, Sarah O’Reilly’s star continued to rise when she won the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship at Addington on Sunday. O’Reilly went into the final day of the five-race series in third position before icing her second win in the competition by taking out two of its final three heats. The 21-year-old didn’t leave her championship run to chance, taking charge in both of her victories on Sunday by sending her winners Tequila Sunset and I’m Tough to the front in the early stages of their heats. O’Reilly has made giant strides in her career this season with 55 wins, more than the tally from her three previous seasons. The junior driver has been in especially rare form recently, scoring a hat-trick on Sunday with her victory outside the championship with Shards In Manhattan. When pressed to explain what she puts her hot form in the sulky down to, the humble O’Reilly said it was her confidence. Anyone who saw her assertive drives on Sunday could hardly disagree. “I don’t really know what it is, maybe I have just gotten a lot of confidence from driving around the country in different situations,” O’Reilly said.

Mid Canterbury dominates championship series

Sarah O’Reilly enjoyed a massive weekend, winning her 100th race in the sulky on Friday night and then claiming the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship on Sunday. “Now it comes easier to me, I guess you could say.” “You get a lot more confidence with every drive, you need a lot of experience.” From barrier 8 in race 5, the last heat of the championship, He’s

Tough looked to be in need of a little bit of luck to win. But O’Reilly took luck right out of the equation when pressing forward and finding the lead after 400m. “I didn’t realise the horse was

going to go that good, I didn’t really have a plan going into that race,” O’Reilly said. “I was just going to drive it as I saw it, I didn’t want to be at the back of the field. “I thought I would mooch forward, and it worked out well for him.” After finding a sweet spot in the trail in race 2, Sunday’s first heat, O’Reilly was quickly out and around to the front. The reinswoman rated the seven-year-old perfectly thereafter and set up what would turn out to be her championship-winning run. “She went well, she got a good trip, and everything worked out for her.” “She still had to do it and she went really well.” O’Reilly went on to make it win number two in the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship in just her third attempt, and naturally, she was thrilled with the result. The reinswoman’s three wins on Sunday put her on 55 wins for the season, four wins behind Junior Drivers’ Premiership leader John Morrison (59). O’Reilly has a chance of winning the national title, but must

produce more outstanding results to reel in her fellow Cantabrian. “There are only about three meetings left, but the lead is down to four, which is probably the closest I have actually been to Johnny,” O’Reilly said. “It won’t be easy, but I will be giving it my best.” The championship win came 72 hours after O’Reilly notched up the 100th win of her driving career – becoming the second fastest female to achieve the milestone behind Sheree Tomlinson.

Locals shine during Winter Classic Matt Markham

They may have come from far and wide, but the locals provided plenty of resistance for visitors to the Mid Canterbury Winter Classic pickleball tournament on the weekend. The three-day event, which began on Friday night and closed on Sunday afternoon, saw 126 players from across the stretch of the country converge for play – the largest pickleball tournament ever played in New Zealand. And while the event was as much about continuing to grow the popularity of the relatively new sport in New Zealand, the competition on the court was electric, with some excellent matches playing out across the course of the weekend. And the locals were right among the thick of the action. One of the elite events of the weekend, the men’s singles competition went to local player Adam Bisley, who overcame a strong field of players to claim the gold medal when he beat

Auckland’s Matt Carter in the final. There was almost a local clean sweep in the singles, with Tessa McCann having to settle for the silver medal in the women’s event, losing the final to classy Wellington player Maddie Schulte, who was in fine form across the weekend’s event. Jane Brosnahan kept the Ashburton run going with her

bronze medal in the same event. McCann kept her own run going in the open doubles event, teaming up with Auckland’s Gorreti Sua to claim the bronze medal in the women’s open double – in a match where they beat fellow locals, Brosnahan and Dianna Leonard 20-13. Bisley made his way to the semi-finals of the open men’s doubles as well, where he and

team-mate Shyamal Ram were ousted to finish in fourth position. In the women’s super-doubles, locals Adrienne Mitchell and Karen Bishop claimed the bronze medal while in the men’s equivalent Murray Kerr and David Bishop were victorious, picking up the gold medal in fine fashion, while Donald Banks and Gavin Begg claimed silver. In the mixed super event, the Bishops went within a whisker of claiming gold, losing the final but picking up the silver medal for their efforts.

FOOTBALL

Strong start to trophy round Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury United Senior side has made a strong start to the final stage of their season, grabbing an all-important victory in their clash with Parklands on Saturday afternoon. In the first round of the New World Championship Trophy for those sides who didn’t make the cut in the top-flight of the competition, Mid Canterbury sounded a warning that they mean business with a 4-1 victory on the weekend to go equal top of the table after the first round. They won’t be able to advance that standing this week though with the side gaining the newfound bye in the Trophy round before three more pool play matches to round out the season. It was almost double-delight for the Mid Canterbury club, with the Reserves side just coming out on the wrong side of the ledger against Parklands, losing 2-3 in a close match. Methven Football Club continued their golden run with another victory to go clear at the top of the standings in Mainland Football’s Division One competition.

Win leaves MC hockey side within striking distance

They beat St Albans Shirley on Saturday afternoon with a solitary goal from the bottom of John Doherty sealing the victory. The side will now turn their attention to the fourth placed Halswell side with the added bonus of the match being a home game at the Methven Domain.

Mid Canterbury United’s 15th grade side were the other team to continue their dominant 2021 season, as they put on a really clinical performance to beat St Albans 3-0 on the weekend. Playing in the championship division of their grade, the side are now four-from-four, and

they are going from strength to strength. They’ll get one of their tougher tests of the season this week though, when they host the second placed Nomads United at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon. Win that match and the side will have an unassailable lead as the business end of the season fast approaches.

There’s a little bit of breathing room there, but still not quite enough for the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side to fully exhale just yet. Another weekend done, and another win on the board for the side who are continuing to stamp their claim as a contender for this year’s Canterbury Hockey Division One championship. With three weeks of pool play hockey remaining, the green and golds – in their returning season to the competition – sit fourth on the standings, just four points clear of their nearest rival Harewood, who they incidentally will face this coming weekend. On Saturday, they increased their chances of a playoff spot with a 4-2 win over Universities, continuing their good second round of the competition and leaving themselves in a really strong position to push through the final stages of the normal season. An evenly-matched affair, Saturday’s game took a while to really get moving, before Mid Canterbury were rewarded for some sustained pressure with a penalty corner. It was unsuccessful, but back on attack shortly after a Tim Harford break-away led to a perfect pass to Hayden Sinclair, who beat the keeper to give his side the lead. Universities answered back quickly, though, after a bizarre umpiring decision saw them score just before halftime. In the third quarter, Sinclair found clear space again and made the most of the opportunity to put Mid Canterbury back in front, but again Universities answered straight back with a goal of their own and it appeared as though the draw – which was played out between the two sides earlier in the season – was about to repeat. But Mid Canterbury flicked a switch in the final quarter, again spurred on by Sinclair, who nabbed his third and then played a role in finding an open Scott Marshall, who banged the ball into the back of the goal to give the side a 4-2 victory. Mid Canterbury has a big two weeks ahead with key matches against Harewood this week and then Hornby, who sit above them in the standings, a week after that. Victory in both of those matches will leave them in a strong position heading into the final round, where they play Riccarton, who aren’t that far off the pace either.

Allenton’s change in fortunes Matt Markham It’s been a few years in the making, but Allenton have finally climbed back atop of the mountain. No-one would really come out and say it publicly, but there was a time not that long ago where serious doubts were held as the future of the proud Ashburton club. Numbers were just keeping the club’s head above water, the senior side, playing in the Senior B competition, were struggling, and there was a general feeling of discourse among long-time supporters about what the future hold. But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and slowly but surely a regathering began, and on Saturday a major milestone was achieved when the Senior B side lifted the Second Grade Cup aloft, after a nail-biting victory against Methven, 30-29. And for club president, Todd

At a glance Allenton 30 (Xavier

Bartlett 2, Casey Moore tries; Bartlett 3 conv. 3 pen.) Methven 29 (Faaitu Tuamoheloa, Osea Baisagale, Pete Shearer tries; Davey May 3 conv. 1 pen).

Xavier Bartlett masterclass leads side to success Grieve it was a proud moment to behold. “There’s a lot of work that’s gone in to getting to this point,” he said. “A couple of years ago the side won their last game of the season, but that was it – so to go from there to making the semi-finals last year, and then winning the final this year, is something we have to be very proud of.” There’s being nothing major to attribute to the change – just the hard work and dedication of the entire club in general, and with that a change in mindset about how everyone approaches the rugby season. “It’s not just the senior side, it’s everyone from JAB up, you know? “We’re encouraging a more community-based environment and trying to get everyone involved, and it’s no longer a case of a kid playing a game and getting in the car and going home, we’re working on getting people to stick around and enjoy the club a bit more, and it’s been great.” And with a centenary just around the corner next year, the momentum build up to that has been huge this season, and Saturday’s victory topped it right off. “It was a huge occasion for everyone, from the players involved right through the entire club. “Everyone plays a part, and we’re lucky we’ve got such a good group of people involved.”

While the overall success was about the community of the club, Saturday’s win itself was in large down to one man’s performance – Xavier Bartlett. The gifted player led Allenton to victory with a 25-point haul in the match, with his fellow players lifting around him to get the victory in a tight encounter. Locked at 3-all after 30 minutes of play, Bartlett put his first mark on the game when he charged down a clearance attempt and scored under the posts. Methven fought back, though, and a try of their own had things level again before Corey Masters touched down for the home team to extend their lead to 17-10. Bartlett again shone though, slicing through the defensive line to grab his second, before Casey Moore grabbed Allenton’s third, and all of a sudden it was 24-17 to Allenton, and the match had been turned on it’s head. Methven scored through Osea Baisagale to level things up with 20 minutes to play, but Bartlett put Allenton back in front with a penalty before Pete Shearer scored out wide to give Methven the lead again. With two minutes left on the clock, Bartlett stepped up to the plate and landed another penalty to put his side in front, and they were able to withstand a Methven attack in the dying seconds to grab the victory, and mark a historical comeback for the Allenton club.

WATTERS CUP

Cup semi-finalists found Guardian reporters Let the fun begin, it’s semi-final time in Watters Cup rugby action. Saturday’s final round of pool play in the honoured competition threw up no real surprises, but it did offer up a re-shuffle in the final standings for the all-important matchups this coming weekend. Southern, courtesy of their earlier win over Celtic, claimed top spot and will host Rakaia on Saturday in one semi, while Celtic will host Methven, after both sides registered victories on the weekend in their respective matches. The green machine kept rolling with a hard-fought but strong win against Rakaia, while Methven gained a bit of freedom and the try-tally hit double figures in their win against Hampstead at the Methven Domain. At Celtic, Rakaia threw everything they could at a stoic Celtic defence but were unable to make major inroads, and found themselves chasing the game for much of the 80 minutes. An early penalty from Troy Edwards put Celtic in front and then a Max Stapleton try midway through the half extended that lead, with Elyh McKibbin adding the conversion from the sideline.

Hugh Griffiths scores one of his four tries for Methven on the weekend. PHOTO JONATHAN LEASK 170721-JL-041

Up 10-nil, Celtic were forced to defend their line like men possessed, and any defensive line that can keep Seta Koroitamana out from just a few metres, more than once, has spent plenty of time on the tackle bags at practice. Celtic grabbed another try just before the break to extend their lead to 15-0, but when Koroitamana did break the Rakaia drought early in the second half, the game again changed momentum. Rakaia still had enough ball to play with, but errors were creep-

ing in, in the face of a green wall, including a couple of big defensive kicks going out on the full, in quick succession. The Celtic scrum collectively had probably its best game of the Watters Cup season, holding firm on their own ball, and presenting problems for Rakaia on their putins. It was good ball from set piece that allowed the green machine to take control in the last quarter, giving their outsides, especially centre Raitube Vasurakata, room to make some telling runs,

searching for the game’s knockout blow. Five times they rolled upfield, unfortunately four of those times incurring the wrath of the referee, giving Rakaia an out each time. But on the fifth, Celtic had an attacking lineout on the Rakaia 22. The ball wasn’t clean, a low, wobbly old pass reached Nathan McCloy’s bootlaces, but in a piece of individual brilliance, McCloy fly-kicked it over the Rakaia backline, sprinted through to follow it up, and slid over the line to put the game to bed, and the conversion iced the cake at 22-5. In Methven, a quartet of tries to nifty winger Hugh Griffiths set the tone for the home side as they ran away big winners against Hampstead, who now have to regroup and turn their attention to 2022, as the only side to miss out on playoff rugby. Hampstead did score five tries in the match though, which will be of concern to the Methven coaching department – although concessions will be made for the fact that many of the Hampstead tries came from slices of individual brilliance and the usual Hampstead free-flowing game plan. With a number of injuries on the books, Methven will be hoping to see some names returning

to training this week, with a particular watch on the influential Manasa Bari, who was described as a 50/50 chance of making it onto the paddock against Celtic this Saturday.

At a glance Celtic 22 (Max Stapleton, Kaydis Hona, Nathan McCloy tries; McCloy conv, Elyh McKibbin conv, Troy Edwards pen.) Rakaia 5 (Seta Koroitamana try). ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ve come to understand that often people are more fragile than they seem. You are careful not to overestimate their selfconfidence or the thickness of their skin. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): There’s a situation. Talking it out will be the least effective solution today. Almost anything else is better... moving it to a new environment, cracking the tension with humour, physical connection, dance break. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): That thing you want to work on once your finances are nailed or the schooling is complete or the promotion has happened or the child is raised... do not wait any longer. Spend 20 minutes a day on it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It is better to have a hurting heart than a closed one. A closed heart powers nothing. The warrior lives and fights empowered by the wound and without certainty that it will ever heal. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): If you knew that in order to fulfil a purpose at a high level then you would have to feel your fear constantly – for a few hours, or a day, or even for a season – would you do it? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): A true friend pushes you. They ask the question or pose the challenge that helps you reveal something to yourself. A true friend is a comfort sometimes but more often an agent for your development. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s a reason you choose to be with people who are living at their edge and moving beyond. You are like this, too. You do not tolerate mediocrity in yourself and seek those with similar tolerances. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You don’t have to keep the cards you were originally dealt; you just have to play them. There will be a reshuffling, and the element of chance will once again play a role, though not as big a role as your play. Be willing to bring something new to the relationship. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): When you’re not finding role models or examples of what you want, search in the opposite direction. Get clear about what you don’t want. Repulsion can be as clear a navigational device as any. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’re striving to be more honest with yourself and others, not because you’re dishonest but because you want to know who else you are beyond the person succeeding so well within society’s rules. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You would not wait for someone to ask for affection. You know from experience that by then it’s already too late. The idea and feeling of being unloved has already set in.
