Moon Ski ends with bang The school holidays closed with a bang at Mt Hutt Ski area. Mt Hutt was at capacity on Friday with skiers flocking to make the most of the ideal conditions and the big day flowed into night with the first of two Moon Ski sessions. After a big day under bluebird conditions, over 600 guests skied under moonlight

before a fireworks display to light up the whole basin. After a busy Saturday on the slopes, the second Moon Ski had a further 400 guest take up the exclusive opportunity to ski under the stars until the old nemesis nor’west wind picked up Another round of Moon Ski session is planned for August 20. Slogan roadmap for Ashburton Adam Burns Tips on Ashburton’s possible slogan overhaul have come from an unlikely source – Woodville. The small rural town of 1500, located in the North Island’s Manawatu region, recently nailed down a new slogan; All Good in the Wood. A report on Ashburton’s panned Whatever it Takes slogan is expected to be completed next

month, following a council-only workshop a fortnight ago. Consultants on Woodville’s branding makeover, which they said had “struck a chord with residents”, said engaging a broad spectrum of the community was key to its success. The catchphrase All Good in the Wood won a slogan competition as a part of a marketing push by community group Woodville Districts’ Vision. “The lessons I’ve taken away from the journey has been to get feedback from all ages and spectrums of the community,” Woodville Districts’ Vision chairwoman Vicky Tomlinson said.

SLOGAN SAY What’s your choice of a slogan that would capture our district, its commercial and tourism aims in a few words? Should the council decide the slogan, or a panel of community representatives with public input? E: editor@theguardian.co.nz “It’s our young ones that are going to be taking this forward so part of our process was future-proofing.” She said the priority was trying to epitomise the town in a few

words. “How can we sum up our beautiful village in a few words? So we kept it positive and snappy, so it sticks in people’s brains.’’ Ashburton councillor Carolyn

Cameron, a big fan of the need for an updated, relevant slogan in the district, echoed the sentiments around “community buy -in”. “Personally, I think it’s a great thing but it needs be a genuine thing that we all believe in and buy into,” Cameron said. “A slogan is kind of like your culture, isn’t it? It needs to be about us and what we see ourselves as.”

Travel bubble popping challenges hospitality operators

Methven Community Board member Ron Smith (middle) expressed his frustration to councillors around the town’s water woes at yesterday’s community board meeting. PHOTO ADAM BURNS 260721-AB-3650

Water tension surfaces at Methven board meeting Adam Burns Some tense exchanges around Methven’s water supply ensued yesterday as an annoyed community board member took on council staff. But Ashburton Western Ward councillor Rodger Letham and deputy mayor Liz McMillan held firm, saying they were advocating for the residents as vigorously as possible at yesterday’s Methven Community Board meeting. The Ashburton District Council has faced pressure from Methven residents over the past week due to another boil water notice in the town with many locals and business owners comparing the situation to “like living in a Third World country”. Council infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann told the community board that a re-

port on a contract tender to build a new reservoir in Methven would be tabled in committee following tomorrow’s council meeting. Plans to prepare detailed design for a new multi-million dollar treatment plant was also set to be brought forward.

Letham said leaving decisions around the reservoir with residents was out of the question. “I’ve got every confidence in council staff that whatever is put in front of us on Wednesday, they will be grilled as to how they came to that decision.”

any way this tender can be put on “ Isholdthere until issues are resolved. It’s a really sore point in the town at the moment.

This was not enough for community board member Ron Smith who believed the reservoir contract tender be put on hold and a public meeting held. “Just the way the township feels . . . that was not a very satisfactory outcome,” he said. “Is there any way this tender can be put on hold until issues are resolved. “It’s a really sore point in the town at the moment.”

Smith probed further and said he hoped the Methven community was being supported around the council table. “We always do Ron, you have a tigress (Liz McMillan) sitting at the table,” Letham said. The two recent flood events has been credited as the major factor around Methven’s current water woes, including stormwater flooding at Mackie Street which was highlighted on yester-

day’s agenda. Chairperson Dan McLaughlin refuted this and said that suggestion was “insulting to the community board”. A handful of members of the public attended the meeting with one resident being cautioned by McMillan for speaking from the gallery on the amount of boil water notices there had been in the town.

Boil water notice lifted Council confirmed late yesterday that the boil water notice for the Methven water supply had been lifted after three consecutive days of clear water tests. However a notice remained in place for residents on the Methven-Springfield supply despite improved results over the weekend.

The trans-Tasman bubble had barely burst and the cancellations started coming in Methven. Peter and Susanne Wood, who run Ski Time in Methven, said they received their first cancellation from Australian guests just 19 minutes after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the travel bubble would be closed from Friday for eight weeks. It was an announcement the Woods said was “not unexpected but still disappointing” and they expect many more cancellations to come. “We were pretty full over the next month because of school holidays across the Tasman,” Susanne said. “Some of our guests from Australia are already in the country so their bookings aren’t affected, but those who aren’t here yet will be cancelling.” It’s been a busy past couple of weeks in Methven with outstanding ski conditions at Mt Hutt and New Zealand school holidays bringing guests in from around the country. Peter was surprised at the length of the time the Government put in place for the travel pause. “We thought maybe four weeks and didn’t expect two months. “But that will take us up to the next Queensland school holidays and the NSW term break after that, so we will look ahead to that.” The Woods expect people who were heading to Australia from New Zealand to now travel locally, and those who were planning gatherings, conferences or other events across the ditch, will now be looking closer to home. The Woods are realistic around the challenges that Covid presents and will continue to present, which means being nimble is absolutely critical to keeping a business in tourism running right now. “You have to adjust, there is no choice,” Peter said. “We may have to reduce the nights we open the restaurant, for example, or how long we are open for, but the local support has been outstanding.”

New tool in fight against varroa led by Mid Canty Sue Newman Mid Canterbury apiarists could be leading the way nationally when it comes to monitoring hive and bee health. Since the arrival into New Zealand of the varroa bee mite in 2012, the bee industry has been on constant alert in terms of mite control, but a pilot project for community-based monitoring could see the most significant progress yet made in understanding varroa infestation in individual hives and improving overall infestation management. Ashburton bee breeder Rae Butler and Midlands apiarist Martin Laas are driving a project that will offer beekeepers, from commercial to backyard, the opportunity to keep tabs on varroa infestation in their hives through a simple app on their cellphone. Currently beekeepers monitor the health of their hives in isolation, treating as required when infestation levels are high. Information is rarely shared between beekeepers, but through the new app, data on infestation could be shared, albeit anonymously, Butler said. The beekeeper would not be identified, but hot spots in the app user’s vicinity would be highlighted and that would serve as an alert to be extra vigilant, she said. In addition, by recording mite levels in hives, a beekeeper would be building up data on their own hive health and the success of their treatment programmes. It would also show whether a particularly high infestation was an individual or wider problem. “You need to have data to make informed decisions and for better management,” Butler said.

The development of the app is in its infancy and is led by Future Bees, a five-year research project to improve honeybee performance, funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and seed funding has been secured for a pilot study. “We’ve already proven we can set up the app at a reasonable cost and running it will be low cost. We’re keeping it simple so there’s minimal work for beekeepers,” she said. Success of the project, however, relies on the bulk of the district’s 100-plus beekeepers coming on board, but early indications are it would be well used. “With those we’ve talked to at the meetings we’ve had it’s been unanimous everyone wanted to carry on with it because they could see its relevance. We’re trying to prove to them that the time spent monitoring pays for itself in getting a heads up on what’s going on in their hives.” As well as serving as a database and an alert for red spot infestations in a beekeeper’s neighbourhood, the app will be an information source on hive testing, testing thresholds and treatment. “What is exciting about this is that it will be New Zealand made and it’ll be a baseline for future varroa research and, even better, it’s being led out of Mid Canterbury.” Some beekeepers had asked why they should help their neighbours, but the app was about co-operation, because what happened in the hives on one property inevitably impacted on others, Butler said. “At the end of the day you’re helping yourself by being part of this.” Butler is a Varroa Sensitive Hygiene Specialist Queen Honey bee breeder with over 25 years in the industry. Her business Bee Smart Breeding is based in Mid Canterbury.

User pays only way to beautify KiwiRail eyesore Malcolm Hopwood The railway land on the north side of Ashburton’s CBD will continue to resemble a wasteland. KiwiRail has no plans to introduce landscaping or planting along the rail corridor that divides East from West Street. KiwiRail’s general manager property, Olivia Poulsen, said KiwiRail’s network is more than 3500kms from Bluff to Whangarei and it passes through many towns. “We do our best to maintain our land either side of the rail tracks, called the rail corridor, within our budget constraints,” she said. KiwiRail was approached by the Ashburton Guardian to see if it would landscape the northern entry to Ashburton to match the district council’s upgrade of its CBD and its Library and Civic Centre on Baring Square East. While KiwiRail has no plans, Poulsen said beautification leases are available to groups and individuals who wish to maintain or enhance KiwiRail land, for example planting or mowing, which are granted by their property team. “We review each application

There are requirements the planting must be easy to maintain she said, must not interfere with rail infrastructure, and not impact lines of sight for rail staff or members of the public. She said, if an application is approved, the lease holder is

charged a fee which covers KiwiRail’s cost for managing the lease. That means if Ashburton people want to beautify the eyesore, they have to pay KiwiRail for the privilege of doing it. In March, Fairfield Freight Hub, which is wholly owned by Wareing Group Ltd, took over operating KiwiRail’s existing Ashburton

Once an agreement on a new hub can be reached, rail capacity is expected to increase from about 500 container movements per year currently to 6000 in the short term, and an expected 20,000 if the new hub is established.

Toilet upgrade will start a chain reaction BY MALCOLM HOPWOOD

The young voices of the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre were soaring in their first rehearsal of their latest production of the Little Mermaid.

Theatre youngsters back on stage Maddison Gourlay Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre are back and ready to steal the show. After Covid stole the show last year, the group of 52, ranging from 7 to 13 years old, were eager at their first rehearsal for this year’s production of the Little Mermaid Jr. The production would run over three nights from October 8-10 and early signs were good.

“This is really good for a first run through,” musical director, Jo Castelow, told the performers early on in their practice. Getting Castelow onboard was a coup for the group. She is also musical director of the Ashburton Variety Theatre’s show, Jesus Christ Superstar. The children’s theatre group’s performance was also special in that everyone who auditioned would get a role, committee member Nicola Walker said. “We get to include everyone which is the point of a community theatre,” she said. The Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre’s last show was in 2019, with their production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Membership of the Ashburton Bridge Club might be increasing but so is the age of its facilities. The club urgently needs to upgrade its entrance and foyer, its electrical fittings and plumbing, kitchen and toilet and has welcomed a $15,000 grant from Advance Ashburton. Club secretary, Trish Downward, estimates the club has nearly 300 members coming and going during the week utilising facilities that haven’t been renovated for 45 years. The upgrade will cost $200,000 and, while the club has a six-figure investment, the Advance Ashburton’s funding is welcome. “We didn’t expect to get that much,” president, John Shearer, said. “[Advance Ashburton] are valuable to

Ashburton in providing financial help to community services,” The club is still short of the amount required but hopes further applications for funding and an appeal to members will meet the shortfall. Work starts on September 1 to widen the entrance and foyer and upgrade the other facilities. They include an easy access toilet for people with disabilities. The club has two disabled members but regularly hosts members with disabilities from other bridge clubs. The kitchen and toilet renovations will also encourage elderly members to return at night, Downward and Shearer said. One is 97 and the other 99 later this year. “The donation from Advance Ashburton has given us hope we can meet our funding target,” Downward said.

Governance role for Grayling Mid Canterbury dairy farmer and former Young Farmer of the Year Will Grayling has been selected from several high calibre candidates to a new agricultural co-operative governance role. Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ chairman Duncan Coull said Grayling would be its first associate director, an 18-month role focused on building governance experience. “To understand how boards set and drive organisational strategy and vision, you need experience and training. “We’ve created an opportunity for an associate to get involved in primary sector governance and learn through doing by being around the board table. Ballance is a co-operative owned by over 17,000 farmers and growers. Grayling, who won the Young Farmer of the Year in 2011, runs a large-scale dairy operation, Singletree and Chertsey Dairies with his wife Kim milking 3300 cows across 830ha. Their equity partnership business model also incorporates a 50/50 share milking structure. “I love farming, it’s physical work that is also mentally challenging. I’m proud to be a dairy farmer and I want to give back to the sector and my community,” Grayling said. “Ballance is an excellent example of the importance of co-operatives within the agricultural industry. How they respond to the ever-changing environmental needs of running a farm today will set the future direction for all their shareholders. “I want to be part of that future direction setting, helping contribute at Ballance and also by bringing these skills back and applying them to local challenges, turning them into opportunities.” Grayling has experience in consultancy, management and

Five Star feedlot boundary tightened

New Zealand has three active confirmed infected farms – all in Mid Canterbury – compared to 34 farms two years ago.

Heather Chalmers A cluster of mycoplasma bovis cases which first emerged in Mid Canterbury almost a year ago was not unexpected, says the latest report from an independent Technical Advisory Group (TAG) into the cattle disease’s eradication response. “It was not unexpected to find further cases of M. bovis, especially in the Ashburton area as this has had the highest density of infected herds in the country. “However, the number of herds involved in this cluster suggests that ongoing animal movements remain a challenge for the programme.” All three remaining infected farms are in Mid Canterbury. TAG also said that the likelihood that the large Five Star Beef feedlot in coastal Mid Canterbury, which has been infected since 2017, could be a plausible source of infection for the Canterbury cluster should be examined closely. M. bovis programme director Stuart Anderson said that since

TAG first considered information in December, the programme had looked into the feedlot closely, tested animals and traced movements. “In the programme’s view there are more likely sources from within the cluster of infected farms itself, such as animal movements, shared grazing, insecure boundaries between neighbouring properties and sharing of dairy platforms. “However, out of an abundance of caution, and in co-ordination with the feedlot’s owners, Anzco, we’ve placed a buffer area around the feedlot that will remain free of cattle until it is cleared of M. bovis. This is on top of the already strict biosecurity measures that are in place and being adhered to.” Over the coming months, the programme will work closely with Anzco on depopulation of the feedlot. The exact timing of this has not been determined and needed to be planned well in advance. “The feedlot is of significant economic importance to the local community and careful consideration is required to minimise the impact of the depopulation exercise on all those connected to it,” Anderson said. “This includes not only the

feedlot’s staff and contractors, but also the farmers nationwide who supply it with livestock and feed grains.” When TAG carried out its review it said dairy cows were within 500 metres of the boundary of the feedlot. “The M. bovis isolates from the two herds in the cluster sequenced before December 2020 were the same sub-clade type and were very closely related to isolates from the feedlot. “Alternative sources for this cluster include unrecorded

movements of animals from a presently unknown infected property or properties.” Anderson said he knew that farmers who have been impacted by M. bovis had found the process challenging. “Their contribution has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated and four years on since the disease was first detected, immense progress has been made towards eradication. We now have just three active confirmed infected farms compared to 34 farms two years ago.” The TAG report said New Zea-

land was on track to eradicate the disease. It found there have been notable improvements in the timeliness of tracing and casing of herds and management of confirmed infected herds since 2019; Beef Surveillance and Bulk Tank Milk screening are working well; There have been improvements in the recording of animal movements by farmers; operational improvements meant the Canterbury cluster identified last spring was rapidly found and controlled; Genomic information continues to support that M. bovis was likely introduced around late 2015 via a single source. The TAG made 14 recommendations for the programme, all of which are accepted. These include advice regarding monitoring of beef herds and non-milking dairy cows and what is required to move from delimiting to the provisional freedom of infection phase over the next year. The TAG found that improvements to the programme meant it was in a good position to deal with any further infected farms identified, which was likely given some farms’ previously poor recording of cattle movements and the likelihood that unidentified small pockets of infection may remain to be found.

Stock trucks get an escort The job of transporting dairy cows wintered in the Rakaia Gorge back to a Mid Canterbury plains dairy farm last week was more difficult than usual after the Canterbury floods damaged the only road access. The five truck and trailer loads by Methven-based Philip Wareing Ltd required an escort from a Harmer Earthmoving road grader to get stock out of Double Hill Run

Road in the Rakaia Gorge. Wareing’s stock team needed to move the cows, which are nearly due to calve, back to a dairy farm for the milking season. “With the road being severely damaged from the last lot of terrible weather it was not a job for the faint hearted,” general manager Simon Wareing said. “A fantastic job, well done by the team.” PHOTO SUPPLIED

Shirts help flood-hit farmers Robbie Shefford won’t be putting away his - “if it wasn’t for farmers, you would be hungry, naked and sober” – tee-shirt anytime soon. Last month, Shefford and Geraldine graphics and design business owner Saskia Ostermeier came together to make the quirky tee-shirts to raise funds for Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury to help flood-devastated famers. The pair raised $4800, which was equivalent to over 160 tee-shirts at $50 a pop. But $30 from each tee-shirt sale went directly to the trust. “It’s only a splash in the pan compared to what is needed, but every little bit helps the farmers,” said Shefford, who has made a name for himself by speaking up about mental health issues and showing his support for those in need.

The former dairy farmer witnessed the devastation of the one-in-a-100-year Canterbury floods and easily identified how hard it would be for farmers. So he was keen to help Ostermeier. “I have been on both sides of the fence, helping farmers after a disaster and being a farmer in a disaster,” he said. Shefford and Ostermeier only planned to sell the tee-shirts for a few weeks, but due to popularity they only recently stopped production. “The orders kept coming in, so we extended it, and then extended it again because we kept getting orders. “We sold beyond what we thought we would. It’s been great to see the support from people.”

The mural was fully funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Business and is a part of the Ashburton District Council’s welcoming communities initiative to foster welcoming public spaces. The final step was sealing it – with an anti-graffiti and UV protection coating – and Aoshima’s signature, delivering a vibrant streetscape for Ashburton. Adam Burns headed along to the mural unveiling to capture the action.

P

op. And there goes the bubble. Not any bubble, of course. We’re talking the always likely to be ill-fated trans-Tasman travel bubble that the Government has quite rightly shut down for at least eight weeks. Multiple Covid outbreaks, which have forced South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria into lockdown, left the Government with no option but to suspend all travel across the ditch. And that makes total sense. Why would anyone from either side of the Tasman want to risk travelling unless they had to anyway? And why should Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her team keep the quarantine-free travel bubble open when the risk from the delta variant was so high and

Daryl Holden dangerous? If what has happened in Australia in the past few weeks has taught us anything it’s that the delta variant changes the game big time. Delta is simply more infectious. It’s the first Covid variant that has all but brought New South Wales to its knees. New South Wales, you may remember, had been able to get on top of outbreaks without going into widespread, lengthy lockdowns. But now, and even after four weeks of restrictions, case numbers keep rising there.

And that’s why we should be concerned because even if just one case of delta emerged in New Zealand that could be enough to put the affected city into a Level 3 lockdown straight away.

anything. Yes, border control will check that travellers have had their test, but our border performance hasn’t been without concern. And beyond the eight-week travel bubble shutdown, what next and what is New Zealand going to do when most of the population is vaccinated? Even with vaccinations, there will always be infections, hospitalisations and Covid deaths. We need a long-term plan to deal with Covid, but no-one seems to know what that is. Sooner or later we’re going to have to learn to live with it. Right at the moment, living with it in New Zealand correctly involves shutting off access to Oz, but that just can’t keep happening. The Covid waiting game continues as frustrating as that may be.

Mobile Beer Club B

eer Club went on tour this week. Most Saturday afternoons some of the in-laws and I enjoy sampling some new craft beers. It’s a job we take quite seriously, especially now we have a good number of breweries under our belts. This week it clashed with our annual family trip to Christchurch. There was no need to panic as we successfully merged the two. By 10.30am we were all loaded up in one of Drummy’s vans and on the road to Christchurch. By 10.35am we were sampling our first offering from a New Zealand brewery. First stop was an Escape Room. We have done a few of these now, but this was the first one that was a complete black-out for the first half of it. For those who have never tackled an Escape Room. You have a series of clues and challenges to complete to get out of the room. We had two teams of four competing against each other. You have an hour to ‘escape’ the room, which both of our teams managed to do. An Escape Room would go well here in Ashburton I reckon, even if it was just open in the weekends.

FACEBOOK FEEDBACK

Should police be armed at all times? That’s the question the Guardian asked in the wake of increasing violence towards our frontline police. Findings from a police association survey revealed that 69 per cent of New Zealand officers wanted to be armed. We asked you for your thoughts and here is a sample of the more than 400 responses: ■■ Paul Clark: The gangs are armed, they were never going to hand their guns in, and so the police need to be armed for sure. ■■ John Allen: Why should they? Haven’t we all had our bad guns taken off us! Jacinda said we would be safe now. ■■ Mike Sheehan: One on every cop’s hip, not in stupid locked boxes in cars ■■ Allan Conway: If 12-yearold kids carry knives our police officers need a superior weapon – respect! ■■ Grant Wilson: Of course they should. This is not happy little 1980s New Zealand anymore ■■ Leola Young: Hell yes. Unfortunately too many horrible people out there now. Our police need to be protected. ■■ Alan Papprill: No! Policing the community needs trusting relationships not intimidation. ■■ Dallas Mason: Considering they were shot at by AKs the other week they should be armed. ■■ Desirée Bond: Yes to personal choice, but also carrying 14kgs of vest and hang-ons is not great for your long term body health. Makes running after baddies harder & slower. ■■ Kim Maria: Sadly, it seems

they are going to need better protection. If they don’t emulate USA. I’m thinking, near distant future. Yes. ■■ Matthew Neame: Hell no. Disarming the public and then arming the police. Kind of see what’s happening here. Along with the hate laws that are coming in, we are in big trouble. We are losing our freedom, our rights, but no one cares! Everybody thinks what is happening is for the good, well wake up and have good hard look at what’s happening. But who care right? When it’s too late to stop these things happening what are you going to do? Who will help you? Only you can help you! ■■ Steve Burrows: No way! Too many cowboys in the police force. ■■ Coral Mclean: There should be 2 officers per car and they

should be able to defend themselves. After all they are putting their lives on the line to defend us. ■■ Matt Owen-Eales: Absolutely, but with that the training needs to be a lot more frequent! Any new Police stations should be built with pistol ranges in the basement. ■■ Errol Wells: Yes but puts added stress into their jobs ■■ Nick Speirs: If the government won’t arm them, give them all tasers and pepper spray. I’d certainly like to see the police armed at the moment with all the gun violence towards them. ■■ Alistair Mabey: Yes give the police firearms. Australian police have firearms at all times and it works just fine. Everyone knows they have a firearm so do not push the police to the limit where the firearm comes out.

■■ Rae Craig: No problem, but would it have stopped the officer being shot? Unless they become like the Americans and approach with weapon drawn, I suspect it would have made no difference. ■■ Stu McConchie: No I don’t believe they need to be. They have access to weapons if needed. Most cars have a glock inside anyway. ■■ David Smith: Provided they are well trained and continue with regular range sessions they should be armed. ■■ Doug Williamson: Yep, all Police were armed for a while after the Mosque Shootings. It didn’t turn any of them into trigger happy shooters and it was amazing how many people thanked them, shoot their hands and even hugged them. ■■ Debbie Gardner: Absolutely 100% they should have the right to be armed. Crims

who point a firearm at a cop should have the consequences, not the upper hand. ■■ Erin Williams: No, not at public events, sports events etc … on call -uts though, yes ■■ Sue Silk: I am of two minds. On one hand it is awful to think that this is necessary, on the other hand as the mother of a police officer, I want to know that my son is going to go safely home from his shift. There are a lot of nasty and crazy people out there. ■■ Cathy Reid: Nope, not at all. A taser doesn’t kill you for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or for being innocent when suspected guilty, a bullet can. ■■ Nathan Speedy: It’s up to them. People need to remember that it comes with an increased risk of an officer’s firearm being taken in a struggle. Arming of officers may not have changed the outcome in a lot of the shootings of officers as they are usually ambushed. I’m for it as long as it comes with an increase in training at Police College and more range time per year. ■■ Terry Amai: No. After the terrorist attack in Christchurch the police were walking around armed. It did not make me feel any safer in fact it scared the hell out of me even though I knew that I was innocent. They have guns in their cars and if they go into dangerous situations then they can unlock them and get them. Short time armed when needed isn’t so bad but to walk around all day every day armed, no.

Every post a winner Matt Markham The men from under the mountain are making quite the statement in Mainland Football’s Division One. Competition leaders with still a number of rounds to play, the Methven Football Club side are currently making every post a winner and their good run continued on the weekend when they secured yet another victory when they beat Halswell United 4-1. The valuable competition points extended their lead margin to three points, which, with a bye round still to come, sees them one win ahead of their nearest rivals, Halswell United – who have a game in hand. With nine wins from their 11 matches, the Methven side have been the form team of the Division One competition and the challenge now will be to maintain their current form for another five to six weeks with some serious football still ahead. The side made a strong start on the weekend to go 2-0 up in the first half – but a quick goal from Halswell early in the second saw the match come back into the danger zone before they straightened up and hammered home their advantage with another two goals to claim the win. This week they’ll take on Cashmere Tech at home at the Methven Domain. Methven’s senior side isn’t the only Mid Canterbury based side to lead their competition. The Mid Canterbury United 15th grade side kept their unbeaten season intact on the weekend when they drew 1-all with Nomads at the Ashburton Domain. Down early in the match after a goal by the visitors, the local side bounced back in fine style with a goal to Elliot Ward to level things up, and that was how the match finished. Mid Canterbury’s Division 3 side kept their chances alive too with a big 5-1 win over Cashmere Technical up in Christchurch on the weekend.

Dyke features in big win

Mid Canterbury rower, Emma Dyke played her part in helping the New Zealand Women’s Eight secure the only automatic qualifying spot in the final at the Tokyo Olympics on the weekend. Their heat, which was pushed forward due to adverse weather was held on Saturday, with the crew coming from behind in the final 200 metres to claim success and book their spot in the final later this week.

Spartans beaten by Spartans The Mid Canterbury Combined XV put up another valiant effort on the weekend, but were ultimately outclassed by another strong Christchurch-based side in the Miles Toyota Championship, losing to Shirley Boys (aka Spartans) 47-14. The side now regroups with a road-trip up to the top of the South Island this weekend, where they will take on Nelson College.

Plains Trophy success Ashburton MSA’s snooker and billiards team had a big win last week, when they claimed the annual Plains Trophy. The tournament sees the top six players from Ashburton, Timaru RSA and Kaiapoi Club compete. Ashburton were strong throughout the tournament and were joint leaders after the pairs, before dominating the singles to claim the title. The team was Joahn Ruakere, Noel Green, Liam Young, Al Benfell, Tony Benfell and Greg Fattorini.

PHOTO ADAM BURNS 240721-AB-2925 They’ve had a win, a draw and a loss from their three matches after jumping up a grade mid-season, but still sit well within striking distance. It was a tough day at the office for the Mid Canterbury United Reserves side on Saturday, with a 1-4 loss to Waimak United leaving them stuck on the bottom of the standings. However, they get a golden opportunity

this week to elevate themselves from that spot when they take on Parklands, who sit just two competition points ahead of them. The Mid Canterbury United senior side enjoyed the bye on the weekend. On Sunday, the Mid Canterbury women’s side continued their great season with a 6-0 win over University of Canterbury to push back into second on the standings.

Mid Canterbury Hockey unveiled its newest piece of silverware on the weekend. The challenge trophy, competed for in the Women’s Division One competition was relaunched as the Doig Cup over the weekend. Named after one of the district’s most proud hockey families, the trophy was held by Wakanui, who have been unbeaten all season. But it went on the line last night when they took on Methven in the first official match since the trophy was unnamed.

INDOOR BOWLS

A dominant display in the morning round of the annual Quadrangular representative tournament was enough to see Ashburton Indoor Bowls claim a major scalp on Saturday. The Walter Strang tournament, played for by Ashburton, South Canterbury, North Otago and Dunedin, is an annual highlight for rep players each season with competition usually tough and wins hard to come by. But with home-floor advantage, the Ashburton side made the most of the opportunity and put their rivals to the sword through the early stages of play to assert a commanding lead. In a team comprised of 18 players with four playing pairs, six playing triples and eight playing fours over three games in each of the two rounds, Ashburton made a strong start, win-

while the other three sides battled it out for second place. Ashburton ended the day with 51 competition points from a possible 72 – 13 points clear of their nearest rivals, Otago – who after

a slow start, came back strong in the afternoon to run into second placing. South Canterbury was third with 33 points and North Otago finished fourth with 22. Heading into the final of the six rounds of the day, Ashburton were unable to be caught – but still produced a strong performance to really hammer home the victory winning three of the six matches and also picking up a draw. The victory continued a strong representative season on the mats with only this weekend’s second attempt at a Paterson Trophy remaining as well as the annual Ladies 10s event in Christchurch. The Paterson eight will travel to Nelson on Friday for the rematch, after the original tournament in Westport was called off due to the state of emergency in the area. The side will play 15 matches in total across both Saturday and Sunday with a spot at the illustrious Welch Trophy, New Zealand Indoor Bowls ultimate representative clash on the line to the winner.

Fresh off his milestone 3000 career driving wins, Ricky May notched up No. 50 for the season at Addington on Friday, when he piloted American Outlaw to victory for long-time supporters, Greg and Nina Hope. It is the 32nd time in May’s career that he has reached or surpassed 50 wins in a season, and there’s one more opportunity this week to add to the tally when racing returns to Addington on Thursday night.

Big shooting week Mid Canterbury will play host to the South Island Teams’ Target Shooting Championships this weekend, the largest indoor smallbore competition in Australasia. More than 200 competitors and a huge number of volunteers, officials and visitors will converge on the district from Friday to compete over the course the event with a strong number of local competitors in with a chance of a success.

Fasika wins on debut Strike-rate Ashburton trainer, Laurence Hanrahan unearthed another handy-type on Friday when Fasika was an impressive victor on debut at Addington. The three-year-old filly made the most of a saloon run to dash up the sprint lane and win impressively in the hands of Ricky May. Fasika is the first foal from Pocket Of Jewels, who won five from the stable.

They played with their usual structure and enthusiasm, and after an extended period of attack were awarded a penalty try – a free seven points – to bring the match back to within one point. Celtic came out with a different game plan in the second half, running the ball at every opportunity, even when tactical kicking appeared a good option. But the strategy eventually paid off, when Vasurakuta made another of his scything runs, after Methven had defused a dangerous attacking lineout and pushed Celtic back over the halfway line. Vasurakuta had plenty of support on his shoulder, and in broken play Nathan McCloy suddenly had ball in hand and nobody in front of him and dashed to the line. Monty Nixon added the extras and Celtic were up 12-3. Methven took a penalty to bring it back a little, but Celtic replied with a long-range penalty of their own, for a 15-6 score line; the visitors were on the back foot, but still well within range. HOCKEY

Mid Canterbury secure semi-final spot Matt Markham With semi-finals fast approaching, the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side continued their run as one of the form teams of Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition with another victory at the weekend. Up against a strong Harewood side, the green and golds put their rivals to the sword with a 4-0 victory, to push them further up on the points table and assure themselves a spot in the semifinals with two rounds of the normal season still remaining. After a testing first quarter in which both sides traded blows without success, Mid Canterbury

worked their way into the lead with four minutes left on the clock in the first when Hayden Sinclair managed to blast one past the keeper and put them up 1-0. A goal-less second quarter gave the Ashburton side little chance for a bit of breathing room, but strong defence was the order of the day as they combated everything that Harewood had to throw at them, including numerous opportunities from within the circle and from penalty corners. A chance opportunity from a turnover down the defensive end of the turf saw the ball swept long and into the waiting stick of Dante Vannini who, with one defender to beat, made his way through and reversed one past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0 halfway through the third quarter.

Scott Marshall continued his fine form of finding the back of the goal for Mid Canterbury on Saturday.

Heading into the fourth, the match was Mid Canterbury’s to lose, and although Harewood continued to pepper the defensive end, and after a replayed effort at

a penalty corner, Sam Moore was on hand to sweep one into the back of the net, and the match was put beyond doubt. With semi-finals looming, the

need to produce performances that last the entirety of the match saw Mid Canterbury hot on attack shortly after, and again they were able to create the perfect opportunity, with Scott Marshall ready and waiting to grab the side’s fourth, and put the icing on the cake of a very strong victory. Fourth in the standings, but eight competition points behind the third placed side, Mid Canterbury can’t advance higher up the ladder in the final two weeks, but they’ll be keen to keep the momentum rolling. This week they take on the Hornby Emulous, who sit in third position in the standings, giving the side a good chance to see exactly where their current form has them stacked before knockout hockey arrives in three weeks.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Perhaps life is always an improvisation, though on days like today, when you know what’s coming next, it feels like a script. A character who throws you a curveball will be a welcome influence indeed. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You want to speak love, but it doesn’t always come out as compassionate as you’d like. Before you beat yourself up over it, consider that love has many tones, some softer than others. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You are not facing any major decisions so don’t be fooled by minor ones. Without healthy perspective, small things can get very big indeed. Matters of scale are solved through the lens of other people. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): While it’s fun to dream about your ideal future, you are also well-aware of the fact that there is no such thing. There is only building in faith and loving what is. Happiness is an attitude, not a circumstance. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Conversation takes you to a new level of understanding as you tune in to the subtle manner in which certain things are said and make guesses as to the meaning. Your takeaway is golden. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): No one is making you jump through hoops to earn your place in the world, though you may do it anyway – a habit born of a belief that you must work to be deserving of life’s bounty. Is that really true? LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): A machine works perfectly if it has the right parts well-aligned. This is also what makes an easy day. You have everything necessary to pull off the job; you just need to jiggle them into their proper place. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Drop the struggle. You can afford to do it! In fact, maybe you can’t afford not to, considering this mental thrashing around wastes a lot of energy and accomplishes nothing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You are willing to accept a person’s suffering with compassion and kindness, and you are open to doing whatever you can to assist. Do not, however, share in it. Protect and care for yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Decisions seem daunting as you sense that even the small choices will be life-altering. Instead of yes and no, it may help you to think in terms of what you feel available to. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): People like you but you overestimate the importance of some aspects of your package and totally miss others. But you can be sure: Like you, they do! PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The difference between a showoff and a showman is intent. One makes a spectacle for the rush of being the centre of attention. The other creates entertainment to evoke an emotional return from the audience.
