David’s ticking along nicely Methven boy’s heart operation goes well
Matt Markham There’s a long road still ahead, but young Methven boy David Dirks finally has his new heart. The 13-year-old Mount Hutt College student and his family were advised late last Thursday afternoon that a donor heart had been found and by 6am on Friday the operation was completed, ending a wait of almost a year. But now the road to recovery begins. “To say it all felt a bit surreal would be an understatement,” David’s Mum, Becky Dirks, said from Auckland. “We’ve dreamed about that moment for a long time, but when it actually happened I was in a bit of a state of shock for a while, I think. “Then, when Sean (David’s Dad) and Hunter (David’s brother) arrived up in Auckland, I think it all hit me, so many emotions – joy, grief, pride, relief, determination – you name it.” In a twist of fate, David and Becky were already in Auckland’s Starship Hospital when the
news of the donor heart availability came through. They’d been there for two weeks after the battery was replaced in David’s pacemaker. There had been complications following that procedure, but he was due to be transferred to Ronald McDonald House at the weekend. Five days after the operation and David is progressing well, although there’s still some major milestones ahead that the family were looking forward to reaching and achieving together. “He’s currently being weaned off a cocktail of drugs but has been ‘awake’ a few times so far with the hope to have him off the ventilator and the sleepy drugs soon. “He’s doing so well, we’re actually quite shocked.” The next process will be to remove the ventilator and get David breathing on his own again, as well as coming off dialysis to give his kidneys a break after being on a bypass. Then it’s onto the little steps. “We’ll begin with physio to get him walking and moving again, and then it’s a case of learning to live with no immune system. At this stage, we could be here for a month, or we could be here for four. It’s not really certain.” Earlier this year, David’s sto-

Dance for David movement, in which the community produced a special dance, close to $50,000 was raised, with the story attracting national media attention.
David has been given the most amazing gift someone could ever receive. But sadly, this is because another family has lost their loved one. To them, we are forever grateful, and we grieve for their loss deeply. One day we hope to thank them personally, and until that day – if it ever comes – we will do our best by this incredible gift and honour the heart beating in our boy every single moment. My one message to everyone is to please have that talk about (organ) donation with your family. Ticking that one little box on your licence is a great step toward organ donation, but without your family’s consent it doesn’t mean anything. – Becky Dirks

Ashburton businessman Justin Skilling aims to turn the Triangle into a unique precinct.
Ashburton businessman wants to revitalise Triangle Malcolm Hopwood Visionary entrepreneur Justin Skilling has unveiled plans to make the Triangle precinct a “jewel in the crown” for Ashburton. Skilling, who owns Juice Signs and Design on the corner of Cass and Victoria Streets, in an area of town that connects in the shape of a triangle, is buying and upgrading buildings so the neglected retail shops could be revitalised as Ashburton’s high-end precinct. He’s already purchased six buildings as part of his privately funded project, which would be one of the most significant in Ashburton’s recent history and be worth
millions once completed. “I want the area to change so it becomes the jewel in the crown of Ashburton shopping,” Skilling said. “I want it to attract high-end, ritzy shops during the day and be a vibrant part of Ashburton’s night life with a cocktail bar, boutique brewery, cafes and food court.’’ Skilling wants the Triangle to connect with the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and Regent Cinema in Wills Street and the Ashburton District Council’s $51 million library and civic centre in Baring Square East, which should be completed late next year. Since moving to Juice Signs and Design two years ago, he’s designed and opened the Triangle Café and doubled the size of his work space. “When I came here, I saw the potential. I now believe this is the best place to live and work,” he said.
Skilling’s vision was to buy existing Triangle buildings, design and upgrade them and then engage people to provide the retail outlets to make the precinct unique. “My role is to source the high-end tenants and oversee the design.’’ He was looking to complete the restoration by the time the civic centre opened and he said the Ashburton District Council were “supportive and want to be part of my vision”. “What I’m planning is something that people see elsewhere and travel away from Ashburton to find, but can happen here,” Skilling said. “It will keep people in Ashburton, give them confidence that we have a progressive town, attract former residents home and give young people in their 20s and 30s something to stay here for. “Christchurch doesn’t need to be the place you go to at the weekend.”

‘I’m ready to do this’ New Advance Ashburton boss named Malcolm Hopwood The new Advance Ashburton Community Foundation boss will call on her varied background to make a difference. Victoria Johnson has been confirmed as the executive officer for Advance Ashburton, which is a registered trust that accepts donations, invests the money and distributes earnings for the benefit of the community. Johnson said she was passionate about Mid Canterbury and what it had to offer. “My life has had lots of curve balls, it’s given me empathy and compassion and I’m ready to do this,” she said. Johnson certainly has much business and life experience to call on. She taught at Mount Hutt College, farmed in Mayfield, catered community events and was the
president of the Mayfield A&P Show. Before working with late husband Ben on their dairy and mixed cropping farm, Johnson completed a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in management. She had also worked in management and financial roles in Christchurch and the United Kingdom. She sees the role of funding many significant projects as a hand-up, not a hand-out. Johnson thought one of her priorities would be seeking out and working with donors. With the income used for beneficial causes, the foundation would be able to help Mid Cantabrians for decades to come. “It’s a low-cost operation so donations aren’t eroded by unnecessary fees and costs,” she said. “Your generosity will stay local, go further and last forever. It’s a brilliant concept.” Fifteen recipients would receive $170,000 in the next funding round to be announced in the next 10 days.

Talley’s Ashburton under investigation Jonathan Leask Talley’s chief executive Tony Hazlett has welcomed a WorkSafe review into health and safety practices at all its national facilities – including its under-fire Ashburton plant. The need for a full scale WorkSafe review of one of New Zealand’s biggest food production and supply companies arose after an Ashburton whistleblower aired serious concerns about filthy machinery and on-site injuries. That prompted others to come forward with similar worries. The most recent incident at the Ashburton plant resulted in a worker’s hand being injured in a machine in March. Hazlett maintained that the

Happened in 2020. Ashburton factory was safe, but he also said a separate, independent investigation would now be undertaken to look into the allegations that have surfaced about the facility. “We are obviously concerned about the recent allegations, and
Talley’s Ashburton Factory will come under the WorkSafe microscope, as well as a Talley’s instigated independent investigation. PHOTO SUPPLIED as a result, in addition to the WorkSafe review, we will be commencing an independent investigation by a suitably qualified health and safety expert to look specifically at the practices and allegations made regarding the Ashburton plant,” Hazlett said.
Part of that investigation would be setting up a channel where current and former employees could put any safety concerns to the reviewer candidly and anonymously. “Again, whilst having confidence in the existing health and
safety programmes, if any failings or shortcomings are identified or if there’s something our team has missed or can do better, we will act on it immediately.” WorkSafe chief executive Phil Parkes said the Talley’s Group had a history of poor health and safety performance. “We are concerned that where health and safety issues continue to arise in a company or a group of companies, this may indicate there are systemic issues that need to be addressed in the boardroom,’’ Parkes said. He said the Health and Safety at Work Act placed clear expectations on all levels of a business from the boardroom to the production line. “. . . so WorkSafe will be looking at every aspect of the Talley’s Group’s health and safety performance and we will liaise with other regulatory agencies as appropriate.” Further: Rant or Rave, page 10.

NZTA has ‘no plans’ to light Rakaia bridge Malcolm Hopwood No official complaints about the Rakaia bridge at night. No problem. That was basically the reaction from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) after significant public feedback expressed concern about travelling over the Rakaia Bridge when it was dark. That feedback came on the Ashburton Guardian’s Facebook page in relation to a post and article, asking if motorists felt safe travelling over the State Highway 1 bridge at night because it had no lighting. Comments ranged from de-
scribing the bridge at night to being a “death trap” and “bloody scary” to “it’s a breeze to drive”.
There were major concerns expressed about a lack of lighting on the approaches to the bridge
or on the bridge itself at night Despite more than 500 comments, NZTA has no plans to add lighting along the bridge. An NZTA spokesperson also said the organisation had received no customer complaints about lighting and that the Rakaia Bridge – the longest road bridge in New Zealand – was regularly maintained and monitored. It listed the safety measures installed on the bridge as having audio tactile pavers run across the centreline so that drivers got a physical and audible safety warning if they crossed it. Good, well-marked edge line on each side and raised reflective pavement markers (cats’ eyes) along the top of the kerbs aided the visibility of the edge line, it said. NZTA did advise motorists to drive even slower than the speed limit if they felt uncertain or unsure for any reason.
Accident statistics for the Rakaia River bridge 79 – Reported crashes on the Rakaia Bridge and its approaches between 2000 and 2020. 4 – Annual average number of reported crashes in the past 20 years
2 – Fatalities from those reported crashes In 2017 – One man died after a car and truck collided. In 2010 – Another man died when his car was
involved in a collision with a large truck and trailer and another car on the bridge. Both fatalities happed in daylight hours and involved a driver crossing the centreline into
oncoming traffic 28 – Crashes occurred in the same period on the Rakaia overbridge 39 per cent (11) – Of those crashes happened at night.
Big chill coming mid-week A cold front is set to sweep over the region with temperatures set to plunge on Wednesday. Canterbury Weather Updates analyst Russell Voice said that colder southerlies are set to develop late on Tuesday, plummeting temperatures in some areas on Wednesday, with snow showers falling to around 300400m above sea level. “A cold southerly flow develops late Tuesday, possibly lingering into Wednesday bringing showers to eastern areas and snow to fairly low levels,” Voice said. “Wednesday will be cold, with wintry showers and snow about the foothills. “Falls will generally be more widespread before midday.” There remains some uncertainly on exact snow levels and snowfall accumulations, he said with elements of warm advection possible, but what is certain is it will be cold. Methven is set to stay below 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday while Ashburton is tipped for a much balmier high of 13. After the severe frost at the weekend and the cold front mid-week, Voice said high pressure looks set to bring mostly fine weather from Thursday onwards.

SUPREME WINNER
A priceless artistic triumph Malcolm Hopwood
Operatic celebrates 60 years By Malcolm Hopwood
The supreme award winner of the Ashburton Society of Arts’ annual exhibition is a “priceless’’ talent who’s overcome serious physical disadvantages to achieve his success. Christchurch’s David Choi received his award last night but was not able to give an acceptance speech. Choi was born deaf, dumb and blind but that had not impacted on his artistic ability. Awards’ judge, Min Kim, who was Choi’s teacher, said his work had not been influenced by anyone else. “He can’t talk, hear and has 5 per cent vision,’’ she said. “To prepare for his work, he touches the object with one hand, then imagines what it is with his brain and paints it with the other. “He works on a huge computer screen, can sense light and dark and then starts to create.” Kim said Choi’s talent was “priceless” and he was an “amazing model for disabled people”. Kim communicates with him by writing words on the palm of his hand and he expresses him-

300 artworks submitted from throughout New Zealand, she said kept being “drawn back to Choi’s” art.
Anniversary-celebrating Ashburton Operatic Society members performed a touching and unusual tribute for colleagues who had died. Following the welcome to past and present members at the 60th anniversary at the weekend, they were then asked to speak aloud the names of former colleagues who had died since the society’s was re-established in 1961. Rob Hardy, Mona Reddecliffe, Robert Young and Alan McQuarters were heard among many spoken aloud. While it’s usual to have a minute’s silence, operatic societies are known for singing, dancing and acting on stage. So it was appropriate for them to use their voices to name those who’d contributed over seven decades to an organisation that has evolved. In recent years, the operatic society has become Variety Theatre Ashburton. The society is considering a future reunion and was told it qualified for the Gold Card in five years. President Nicky Milmine welcomed everyone with the jubilee cake, made by Nancy Winter, cut by patron, Margaret Jackson.

Worrying health and safety tallies 56.
Nothing particularly special about that number, is there?
Wrong. Fifty-six is the number of workplace deaths that have occurred in New Zealand from April last year to March this year. Fifty. Bloody. Six. That’s an appalling statistic recorded by WorkSafe New Zealand. You could also throw in 30,612, which is how many workplaces injuries have occurred in New Zealand where a person has been unable to work for more than a week because of an injury or illness suffered at their place of employment. That figure was from recorded incidents between September 2019 and August 2020. What those numbers spell out very clearly is that in many ways Kiwis’ health and safety
Daryl Holden practices at work – both from an employer and employee – is a serious, deadly concern. For many years, New Zealand had a horrific rate of workplace accidents. At one stage it was twice as high as Australia’s and nearly six times Britain’s. Now it appears to be slipping back to those dark days. So something needs to change, which is why it was so pleasing to hear that WorkSafe New Zealand was going to take a deep dive review into the Talley’s Group after what our
health and safety Government watchdog organisation called a history of poor health and safety performance from one of the country’s biggest food production and supply companies. That history, from a local con-
ball rolling last week, raising serious concerns about filthy machinery and on-site injuries at the plant, prompting others to come forward with similar worries. Something about where

there’s smoke, there’s most definitely fire came to mind when the tip-offs and comments came flooding in about the Ashburton set-up and the Talley’s operation generally. What happens now is critical on two levels. Firstly, for the
safety of the people who work for Talley’s. They need to feel confident of getting home unscathed at the end of every day. That should be a given. Secondly, and connected to that, the health and safety practices and procedures at Talley’s clearly need an overhaul. Of course, with any health and safety review there remains the need to get the right balance between reducing on-the-job accidents and strangling businesses with red tape. That can’t happen either. And it won’t. But right now the focus must be on eliminating or minimising the very real risk of further human toll. Doing that must be the priority from the WorkSafe review and investigation into Talley’s, especially so close to home.

I feel invaded T
hat’s one trip to Christchurch I would not like to repeat. Manda had an operation and we had to be at Christchurch Women’s Hospital at sparrow’s fart on Thursday morning a week ago, so we thought it would be a good plan to stay the night up there on the Wednesday night. After checking into our motel room, we ventured out to the casino for dinner and a bit of fun at the roulette table. We struck it lucky. Not at the weekly quiz, which we stumbled over while having our dinner. Although it was a couple of hours of free fun. We had better luck on the roulette table. That’s the royal ‘we’, as it was Manda who had all the luck and we left the table with our dinner and motel paid for. Things went to plan the next morning and after a reasonably short wait Manda headed off for her procedure and I had a threehour window to fill in. I went and picked up my e-bike, which had been serviced and then hunted out a coffee and some lunch. I had thought about grabbing the bike on the way home as it was getting serviced in Hornby, but I knew Manda would be sore and keen on heading straight for home. It will be alright in the back of the car for a couple of hours I thought. No such luck!
Phill Hooper Back at the hospital, I was told that although the op went well, they were struggling to get on top of Manda’s pain, and they were going to keep her overnight. Murphy’s law kicked in as I grabbed my phone to call my brother to book a spot on his couch and the battery was down to 5 per cent. I ducked back to the car to grab the phone charger and ring him and the rest of the family to activate Plan B. I didn’t notice the back quarter window smashed, but my heart sunk when I opened the car door and saw the glove box open. It sank further as I spun my head to the back and saw no e-bike. Our overnight bag was flogged as well. So, the first of my Plan B phone calls was now to the Police. Even though the person who left the note on my windscreen had given them a good description of the thieves “you won’t see that bike again” was my main memory from the call. Thankfully we had insurance and even though depreciation
kicks in and the cost of replacing it has increased, we are not completely out of pocket. I now know exactly what people mean when they say: “It’s the invasion of privacy rather than the material loss that gets at you the most.’’ Hopefully karma kicks in and knocks them off the bike a few times, eh!
And one more thing . . . Fingers crossed this Saturday for clear skies above Argyle Park. The Ashburton Astronomy Group will be setting up observing equipment at the easternmost car park of Argyle Park off Middle Road on Saturday morning to attempt to observe the Matariki star cluster, low in the north-east pre-dawn sky. So from 5.45am to 6.45am this Saturday, if the skies are clear, members of the public are invited to come along and view the star cluster. Dress up warmly. Yes folks, it’s definitely a zebra crossing I
f it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck. Right? But if it’s laid with the latest paving, crosses East Street and looks like a courtesy crossing in disguise, then it’s actually zebra crossing. And that’s straight from the zebra’s mouth, no less. But for weeks, shoppers and businesspeople commuting from the Fine Lion to West Street parking have wondered about the status of the crossing. Do they have right of way? Do vehicles go first? Who’s at fault if there’s a crash? Those walkers have erred on the side of caution. Ashburton District Council’s infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann, confirmed it was a zebra crossing, but still a work in progress and didn’t have signage to say what it was. McCann said there were two zebra crossings on Cass Street, two on Tancred, two on Burnett and four on East Street. “Some of these crossing points
Malcolm Hopwood on East Street have yet to be completed and temporary caution pedestrian crossing signs have been placed,” McCann said. To distinguish further, zebra crossings have alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface – painted or paved – a pair of striped poles with orange discs to indicate the crossing point and white diamonds painted on the road to alert people of a crossing point ahead. In some parts of the CBD, there were also courtesy crossing points. There were 13 in all designed as visual aids and intended to make the roads safer. McCann said at those crossings, drivers have priority and pedestrians needed to look for oncoming vehicles before making their move. But drivers should also
exercise caution and be aware of pedestrians using a courtesy crossing. If they see someone crossing at a courtesy point, they should slow down and allow them to cross. If pedestrians and motorists need further clarification, then
there’s the “big daddy” of crossings. Those are called traffic lights when pedestrians cross the road when signals tell them to. So no confusion there. The Havelock and East Street, and Moore and East Street inter-
sections, do have traffic lights, which will also have timers installed to indicate how much time pedestrians have to cross the road. Just don’t try to cross when there are five second left and a big rig is bearing down on you.

president of the Mayfield A&P Show.

Locals top Junior Young Farmers Mount Hutt College students Eddie Millichamp and Sophie Adkins have fought off secondary school teams from across New Zealand to win the FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year. They were one of 14 teams that competed in the prestigious grand final at the weekend. The duo, who are in their final year of secondary school and both headed to Lincoln University next year, worked well together and are stoked with their win. The chilly start to a crisp winter’s day in Christchurch didn’t deter friends and family from coming along to support the competitors. “Getting to be here and having this experience has been awesome,” Sophie said. The pair topped the points table at the Aorangi regional final to qualify for the grand final. The Junior Young Farmer of the Year runs in a similar style to the Young Farmer of the Year contest. A series of modules and a farmlet challenge throughout the practical day was accompanied by an exam and speeches all designed to test their teamwork, practical and theoretical knowledge and skills. “The speech was both a challenge and a highlight, our topic was on land use and

The top five teams from the practical day went into “the face-off”, a famous Young Farmer of the Year buzzer-style quiz which saw students being asked anything from the colour of a black box in a plane to the correct depth for soil testing. points, but overall winners Eddie and Sophie came out on top. Judges commented on the outstanding quality of the competitors and the quality of work they produced throughout the day, in particular on the farmlet. Jono Harris and Alex Wyeth from Rathkeale College, East Coast region, took out
second place. Tayla Hansen from St Paul’s Collegiate and Tim Lumsden from Hamilton Boys’ High School, Waikato/Bay of Plenty region, came third. As winners, Sophie and Eddie each received over $1300 in prizes. The event is a key part of the work being done by NZ Young Farmers to attract students into the agrifood sector. In the AgriKidsNZ competition for primary school-aged children, Blue Mountain College in West Otago produced the winning trio for the second year in a row. The 21 teams that competed were made up of the top three teams from each regional final. Students tackled a range of challenges testing their practical and theoretical knowledge and skills. NZ Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith said AgriKidsNZ and Junior Young Farmer of the Year were the newest and probably fastest-growing part of NZ Young Farmers. “We see the pathway, from AgrikidsNZ to FMG Junior Young Farmer to FMG Young Farmer of the Year, as a pathway to excellence. “We’ve had such an outstanding calibre of competitors across the three competitions which is great to see and makes for an exciting future.”

Jarman Young Farmer of the Year Ashburton-based, first-time competitor Jake Jarman has been crowned FMG Young Farmer of the Year after beating six other grand finalists for the prestigious title in Christchurch on Saturday. While representing the Taranaki Manawatu region, Jarman, 24, now works in Mid Canterbury as an ANZ relationship associate. “Feeling overwhelmed, excited and relieved that it’s over! “I’m just also so incredibly thankful to so many people, far too many to name, but it’s a huge team of people to pull together this event and a big team behind me to get me here too,” Jarman said. He was determined to give the grand final his best shot after initially signing up to the contest just to give it a go. “I was happy that I gave everything a go to the best of my ability and be competitive. “I loved the practical day, the challenge of having to multi-task under time pressure and be a bit strategic”. He said he never dreamed he’d win the title of Young Farmer of the Year, but was immensely proud of the achievement and hoped it would inspire others. The victory was a culmination of days of gruelling practical and technical challenges set out to test the seven grand finalists’

skills, knowledge and stamina. Contestants participated in a technical day, a practical day, speeches, exams and the famous buzzer quiz. Before moving to Ashburton, Jarman was the fifth generation to work his family dairy farm at Inglewood, Taranaki and also worked as a farm systems research graduate with Dairy Trust Taranaki. “My fellow competitors certainly didn’t make it easy and honestly, I feel like it was anyone’s game for the whole three days. “It’s been a privilege getting to know them and to now call them friends.” Jarman also won the agribusiness, agri-sports and agri-knowledge awards – walking away with a prize package worth over $75,000. Joseph Watts, East Coast region, was named runner-up for the second time, with Calvin Ball, Northern region, third. Congratulating Jarman, NZ Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith said he was a fantastic representative for the contest and the agriculture, food and fibres sector. “As a first-time competitor, it has been amazing to watch Jake shine and not just ‘give it a go’ but take out the title,” Coppersmith said
“He has proven to us again that this contest isn’t about age and experience but determination and cross-sector skills.” “Jake is a fantastic leader for the ag sector, a role model and has already inspired other young people to believe in themselves and showcase what they’re made of. “It’s incredibly exciting to see what lies ahead for Jake.” On the practical day finalists had seven modules and several tasks to complete including constructing gates, railing and mailboxes, pruning trees, plumbing in a water trough and installing a water monitoring system to name a few. In between modules, the grand finalists battled it out in the headto-head competition which saw contestants racing the clock to create a produce box as well as agri-sports which was all about strategy to gain the most points. With a large number of tasks to get through including putting together a spring gate, hooking up a tractor to a drill, using a gas saw, chopping down a tree and more – all in 45 minutes. Any safety infringements were penalised heavily with contestants having to race back to the start, jump rope for 30 seconds before navigating a series of obstacles to get back to where they were.

Being strong, decisive and outspoken in one situation makes it easier to be the same the next time and the next. Mostly it is a matter of core strength and quick reflexes, plus being ready to make adjustments necessary to maintain equilibrium. Ricky gets his magic mark Matt Markham He’d have been more comfortable at the wheel of a tractor on his farm on the outskirts of Methven, but Ricky May became the toast of the sporting nation on Sunday afternoon when he did what 18 months ago, no-one thought would be possible. The 63-year-old legend of the

harness racing scene notched up career win 3000 in New Zealand at Addington, joining an elite group of just two other drivers to have reached the mark – one of whom, incidentally, also happens to be from the small ski-town here in Mid Canterbury, in Maurice McKendry, with Tony Herlihy the other. But May’s achievement is a little bit more special than the rest. His story is incredibly emotion-charged. In January last year, the popular horseman suffered a medical event mid-race, and was later informed that he was clinically dead for up to 10 minutes while he was worked on by fellow licence holder, Ellie Barron. He suffered hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition that sees the heart muscles thicken, even though the heart itself is healthy. Incredibly, May pulled through, and was operated on a few days later and has barely had an issue with his heart since. In July last year he returned to race driving with the sole focus of making it to the 3000-win mark – needing around 50 victories to get there. “I needed something to focus on, and it was the logical thing,” May said. Quietly chipping away and racking up the wins, May got there on Sunday guiding Sheeza Artist to an all the way victory for long-time supporters Greg and Nina Hope. The moment was acknowledged by everyone on course, with his fellow drivers lining up at Addington Raceway to cele-

brate alongside him, a moment May admitted had him a little emotional. “I came back to the stables and all the drivers I drive against clapped me in. I was pretty overcome by it all, to be fair.” Making the moment even more special was that many members of May’s family – which is re-
nowned in harness racing circles, were in attendance, including wife, Judy, his father, Terry May and eldest son, Philip. Technically, May’s 3000th career win came in January, when he piloted Valley Star to victory at Nelson but the milestone achieved on Sunday acknowledged wins on New Zealand soil
with 22 wins coming in Australia and another four in Germany while competing in the World Drivers’ Championship. NOTE: Make sure you grab a copy of the Weekend Guardian this week, where May ponders over some of the greatest horses he’s ever sat behind.
Lower grade sides fly local flag The performance included an impressive five-goal haul from Muzzamill Khan while Lachlan Gardner and Elliot Ward grabbed the other two. The side is now three-from three in the second stage of the season and building in confidence from week to week and producing consistently excellent performances on the paddock.
Matt Markham It may have been another tough day on the paddock for Mid Canterbury United senior football sides on Saturday, but again there was plenty to smile about in other grades. In a rare weekend where not one local side played at home on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, all the action was north of the Rakaia River including an important double-header clash for the Mid Canterbury Seniors and the reserves side against Universities. Neither match went the way of the blue and reds though, both losing 1-3 in tough encounters, but no major damage was done for either side in terms of their standings in their respective competitions. Playoff spots are a forlorn opportunity but saving some grace and finishing as high up as possible will be at the top of the agenda, so rounding out matches is a must in the coming weeks for both teams.

But while it was a tough day at the office again for the two sides, the lower grades produced some good results. Mid Canterbury United’s Division Four side kept their rank at the top of the standings with a narrow 1-0 victory over Waimak United while
the Sunday Women’s team kept rolling on with a 3-0 win over the same club on Sunday morning. They still remain in second place in the standings but have narrowed the margin down on competition leaders Western AFC Rebels. That margin may get big-
ger this week however with the local ladies getting a much deserved week off with the bye. Meanwhile, the Mid Canterbury United 15th grade side kept up their domination with another victory on the weekend, beating Nomads United Blue 7-0.

Championship spots up for grabs Matt Markham It’s business time in Mid Canterbury Netball this week as the Championship round gets under way. But just who gets a shot at the big prizes won’t be known until later tonight, with the final make-up of the three sections to be determined by three promotion and relegation matches at EA Networks Centre. Mt Somers and Ashburton College A will go head-to-head in one game, with the winner playing in Premier 1 and the loser in Premier 2 while what is effectively Methven C and Ashburton College B will fight it out in the other match for a spot in Premier 2, with the losing side dropping down into Premier 3 for the final stage of the season. After two full rounds of play for the year, the pecking orders have become quite apparent at the head of each section, but just who will get the chance to square off with the leading lights when it comes to semi-final time is really anyone’s guess. So, tonight’s matches are rather important. The College side were relegated down into Premier 2 at the end of the first round. The young side showed
Ashburton College A will shoot for a return to Premier 1 Netball tonight in promotion and relegation matches ahead of the final round. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN some serious promise during that round, pushing many of the Premier 1 teams close and, at times, actually took control of the match but were unable to get a win on the board. Some confidence building time down in Premier 2 will make them a dangerous prospect for Mt Somers tonight. The Mt Somers ladies dominated Premier 2 for the first third of the season to earn the right to make it up to Premier 1 and they certainly haven’t disgraced themselves in their four matches there since arriving. In Premier 1 this week, the winner of tonight’s match will play Southern and both Col-
lege and Mt Somers have already engaged in some classic matches with them this year, creating an intriguing matchup. The championship round starts with heavyweights, Hampstead beginning proceedings when they take on United in the early match. The United side can lay claim to being the only side to have beaten Hampstead this season, and in fact in the last two seasons, but the blue and gold machine has been on a roll for the past few weeks, and it would be a major upset to see them toppled again. Methven and Celtic will play
the final match of the night in what also should be a hardfought match. In Premier 2 the winner of Ashburton College B and Methven will take on the loser of the other promotion/relegation game tonight, while Southern will play Hampstead B and Celtic B will take on Methven in a double-header for the two clubs at the 8.15pm slot. In Premier 3 on Thursday night, Ashburton College 10A will play the loser of the College B and Methven match while United and Mt Somers B fight it out in the second game of the evening.

Tough loss for Mid Canterbury It’s not quite panic stations yet, but Mid Canterbury’s Senior Men’s hockey team will be cautiously looking over their shoulder for the next few weeks as the race to the semi-finals heats up in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One action. The green and gold side were unable to advance on their standings in the competition at the weekend, going down to a strong Southern United side 1-2 at Marist Park, but there was plenty of heart in the defeat, which is encouraging. Dominating through the early exchanges in the match, Mid Canterbury grabbed an early lead through a Stephen Blain field goal that found its way past the goalie from a deflection. But that spurred Southern into the action, and they came back strong to equalise before the end of the first quarter. The match looked set from that point to be a battle of attrition and for most of the remainder of the game, neither side budged. But, six minutes into the final period, Southern found another goal to wrestle the lead, and Mid Canterbury were unable to grab their second to bring the match back to level. With five rounds of pool play left, Mid Canterbury’s spot in fourth on the overall standings is a precarious position. Three teams ahead of them have 10 competition points in hand on the rest of the field, led by the local side. Marist sit just behind Mid Canterbury, one point away, but there’s a good chance to break free of the shackles when they face them in this week’s game at Nga Puna Wai on Saturday. Post that, Mid Canterbury have a number of strong opportunities to get wins on the board in matches against sides lower than them in the standings, so will be out to make the most of those opportunities.
Thomas continues golden run Matt Markham When you’re hot, you’re hot might not seem the most likely explanation for a run of form in a sport like indoor bowls, but in the case of Simon Thomas, it rings true. Fresh off the back of an excellent national championships – where he was awarded joint player of the tournament – Thomas enjoyed another standout weekend on the mats last weekend, as he booked his place in two separate national finals later in the season. Saturday and Sunday were zone playoffs in Mixed Fours, Henselite Singles, Masters
Fours and also the Mixed Pairs, with Ashburton winners squaring off with sides from Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago. Thomas was on a triple-trek, qualifying in the Mixed Fours, the singles and also the Mixed Pairs alongside his wife Julie, and it was in the latter event they made their first mark for the weekend, winning against a strong line-up of combinations. Thomas then returned to Canterbury Indoor Bowls Hall on Sunday and completed the double by taking out the singles as well. That all means he’s booking two trips to respective national finals, where he will face off against fellow zone winners from the other seven zones across New Zealand.

Paterson Trophy Squad announced Ashburton Indoor Bowls selectors have announced their nine-strong line up for the Paterson Trophy, which will be played in Westport next weekend. The annual representative fixture, which sees sides from Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay and Motukea, the West Coast and Ashburton battle it out over three days is a season target for local players. Selectors have chosen an experienced line-up, spearheaded by National and Island representatives Grant Wilson, Mat Bassett, Simon Thomas and Michael Lawson. Wilson and Bassett will combined in one fours team alongside Julie Thomas and Murray Bassett while Thomas and Lawson will be joined by Matt Markham and Colin Gilbert in the other. Geoff Laird has been named as the side’s reserve with his wife, Bernice the manager. The Paterson format sees teams play against each other in fours, pairs and singles across five rounds of play beginning on the Friday night and finishing on Sunday morning. The winner of the zone event will then head to the National final, the Welch Trophy which is held in September.

Rakaia, Southern take control Play-off race to go right to the wire
Matt Markham Another week gone, but the picture is still unclear as to who deserves top billing in the Watters Cup. And it might just unfold that it’s not until the final round of pool-play, next Saturday, that a true understanding of just what the pecking order in Mid Canterbury rugby is becomes evident. Saturday gone, again, produced two outstanding matches. Southern came from behind to score in the final minute to beat Celtic, and Rakaia had to call on all of their reserves to hold off the challenge of a determined Hampstead side. While Rakaia hold down top-rank-

ing on the standings after three rounds, they could easily find themselves relegated to third spot after this week’s matches, as they head into the bye with both Celtic and Southern within striking distance of overtaking them. They were good on Saturday, but as expected Hampstead threw everything they had at them, and at times it seemed like they might be able to get on top of their hosts too. The match was close throughout – evidenced by the 20-16 score line in favour of the Rakaia side. It’s been a strong start for Rakaia after a frustrating Combined campaign. They should have beaten Methven in week one, were excellent against Southern last week and got the job done on the weekend. They now get a week to rest and recuperate before a last-round clash with Celtic that could potentially have a lot riding on it. For Hampstead, it’s a tough situation. Docked four competition points for a default in the combined competition, they’re chasing their own tails a bit. They’ll need to beat both Celtic and Methven convincingly in the coming weeks to give themselves an outside chance of a spot in the top four – but on current form it’s not impossible. Out at Hinds, Celtic looked like they were going to follow in the footsteps of Rakaia a week earlier and topple the Combined champions as they led into
the final seconds of the game. But a last-ditch try to first-five George Williams saw Southern pull a rabbit out of the hat to win the game 34-32, in a match-up fitting of a final. Celtic had set the early pace and looked to have the match in control, but Southern – as they’ve done countless times before – worked their way back into the match from 15-25 down to lead by two late in the match. A try to Celtic changed the fortunes, and it appeared that the green machine was going to stake their claim, until Williams buried their hopes and dreams right on the final whistle. Bonus points will end up being crucial in the overall standings, so Celtic’s two points should help them out when it comes time to get the calculators out and work out semi-final positions. They’ll be keen to finish strong too though, with matches against Hampstead this week and then Rakaia in the final week. Southern are in an interesting position. Two wins has them in a strong position, equal on points with Rakaia. But some of that aura that surrounded them after the first stage of the season is disappearing, and with that confidence will grow in their rivals when it comes time to face them. Methven this week will be an interesting match, especially with Methven needing a win to keep in touch with The rather familiar sight of Southern’s Petero Tuwai breaking the other three teams ahead of them away from defenders on his way to score another try. in the standings. Semi-finalists found in Senior B Matt Markham It’s semi-final time in Senior B rugby’s 2nd Grade Cup. For the second major piece of silverware for the season in the second tier of senior rugby, the form book generally gets thrown out the window, and it’s all on for young and old, and 2021 looks set to be no different. Front-runners Methven will host Mt Somers in one semi-final, while Celtic and Allenton will do battle in the other at Keenans Road. Mt Somers earned the right to be there through an impressive 26-17 win over Allenton at the weekend, grabbing the Bruce Beckley Challenge Shield in the process, and ensuring it stays at its spiritual home for the off season. The dark horses of the compe-
tition, Mt Somers have produced some excellent results this year, and they’ll be fired up to get in front of Methven again after a last-minute penalty saw them lose to the defending champions three weeks ago. Methven made light work of their final match before knockout rugby on Saturday, proving too slick for a determined Collegiate and Hampstead Combined side on Saturday, winning 36-19 at the Methven Domain. The home side scored within the first few minutes of the match and never really took their foot off the pedal. The combined side, to their credit, kept plugging away though and scored a couple of excellent team tries with some strong ball-carrying causing a few headaches for the Methven defensive lines. What Methven do well is counter. Given any opportunity, they’ll go wide to some powerful players and almost without fail every time get over the advantage line
and know how to do it, so Allenton will be wary of the challenge they’ll face when they head over town this Saturday.
