Guardian changes countdown Guardian coming out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday The countdown is on to a newlook Ashburton Guardian – both in appearance and when it’s published. The major change will see your Guardian come out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday each week. That will start on Tuesday, July 6, with the new publication days replacing the existing Wednesday, Friday and Saturday sequence. The change to different days was adopted after unanimous and positive feedback from readers and advertisers. “Our readers love their favourite local paper so much that not having a Guardian between Saturday and Wednesday was just too big a break,’’ Ashburton Guardian, managing editor, Daryl Holden said. “For many retired readers especially, it actually upset their routines by not getting their Guardian fix when they wanted it. “We listened to what they had to say. “We wholeheartedly agreed with what we were told, so now we’re introducing an exciting change, which would be part of the ongoing development and evolution of the paper. “It also further strengthens our engagement and connection with our community who we’ve proudly served for more than 140 years.’’ Part of that development would also see the Guardian get a bit of an upgrade, with a range of exciting new page designs to be unveiled. The masthead has been overhauled, as has the popular opinion and letters to the editor section. Other page changes and new sections are in the planning and would be revealed in the coming weeks and months. “So these are exciting times,’’ Holden said.
Guardian changes
We’ve got the look: Ashburton Guardian managing editor, Daryl Holden, shows off some of the paper’s new look. The Guardian will come out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, starting next Tuesday. “Above all, our goal in changing the days the paper comes out, and in the revamp, was to make the Guardian an even
more enjoyable experience and relevant to all of our readers and advertisers. “The changes reflect our com-
munity’s needs and interests in a paper that would mean nothing without that ongoing support,’’ Holden said.
What: The Ashburton Guardian will come out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday each week. When does it start: From next Tuesday, July 6. Why the change: Our loyal readers and advertisers told us not having their Guardian between Saturday and Wednesday was too big a gap. They missed it too much. So we listened and we changed. Any other changes: The Guardian is also getting a bit of a makeover. There will be a new masthead and page designs among a number of changes to be introduced in the coming months. Some changes include: The TV Guide will appear in Tuesday’s paper, as will the weekend’s sporting action. The property section moves to Thursday. The Guardian Weekender will continue to be full of local features and stories.

Recent outbreak sparks vaccine uncertainty for Doris “After all I’m going to be 104 so do I really need it?” Due to her age, Wakelin falls into Group 3 of the vaccine rollout categories and says she has not been offered any advice on the matter. “No-one has mentioned it, I thought my doctor may have mentioned it.” Bookings are now open for this group although reports in some regions that some vulnerable residents may have to wait until the end of next month at least due to a nationwide shortage. However until last week’s domestic developments where it was revealed a Sydney man travelled to the Wellington region, while infected with the “delta” variant of the virus, Wakelin was indifferent about the vaccine. “The only thing that is worrying me is the more viral one they found up in Wellington,”

An Ashburton woman who turns 104 next month believes the need for her to have a Covid jab is unnecessary, despite falling within a heightened risk vaccine group. But developments in Wellington last week and a move to Alert Level 2 have made the woman think twice about whether she should get the Pfizer vaccine. Doris Wakelin is of the mindset that she is heading to “the end of the road” and that getting the vaccine is not worth the effort. “I know of two or three elderly people who have already had it and they were very sick afterwards,” she said. “I’ve been tossing up whether it’s going to be worth the effort.
she said. “It’s made me more aware that it is getting closer to home. “So I’ve got a lot of thinking to do if I’m going to or if I’m not going to.” Although not as agile as she once was, she does get out and about in the community a handful of a times a month. Covid risk was less of a concern compared to fluctuating temperatures and other health issues, she said. “I can’t afford to catch pneumonia,” she said. “If I catch that, it’s curtains . . . because your immune system is going down.”

Inaugural Matariki market a big hit The success of the inaugural Matariki Night Market has defied expectations. A market featuring kapa haka and cultural performances was held at the Hakatere Marae to mark Matariki, Maori New Year, on Saturday. “It was an amazing success,” Hakatere Marae sub-committee member Celia Colcord said. “The community engaged with it and I think it surprised them to see the set-up.” They had been hopeful of getting a few hundred people turn
up, but Colcord said they were blown away for around a thousand people piled through the gates. The event kicked off with some kapa haka performances followed by a Cook Island group and then Samoan fire dancers, while the market stalls offered all sorts of odds and sods as well as a bite to eat. “We also finished off with lighting some flying lanterns to cap the night off which was just beautiful.” The big turn-out shows they
are on to a winner and following the successful debut of the night market, it has already been put in the calendar for next year which could be even bigger. Colcord said the plan at this stage is to hold it on on June 24 when Aotearoa will be celebrating the inaugural Matariki public holiday – the first new public holiday for New Zealand in almost 50 years and the first to recognise Te Ao Maori. “We are also looking at potentially holding a night market in summer.”

Dancers’ big weekend By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Huge numbers contested the Ashburton Highland Dancing Association’s Annual Competitions at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Saturday. With numbers well up on last year’s Covid-19 impacted event, and higher than 2019, it made for a busy day on stage until the final presentations at around 7.30pm. “It was great to see so many people coming to support the event and even some new little local ones wanting to learn Highland dancing which is great to see,” Ashburton National and Highland Dancing Association vice-president Megan Christie said. Attracting dancers from across the South Island the event served as a build-up to the National Championships in Oamaru in three weeks’ time. Julie Hawke School of Dance principal teacher and president of Ashburton Highland Dance committee, Julie Hawke, said that after the weekend she feels happy and confident with all of her pupils looking extremely fit and showing some strong performances in preparation for the nationals. Results highlights: Top championship and trophy winners from the local dancers included Briar Prendergast (win-

A small number of Ashburton College students and staff had to self-isolate as a precaution after visiting Wellington on the same weekend as the Covid-positive Australian man. Acting principal Jono Hay said that a small number of the school community happened to be in Wellington on the weekend of June 19-20. They were visiting Wellington for a variety of personal reasons, and nothing school related, Hay said. “In all cases, no students had themselves been in places of interest at specified times,” he said. “A precautionary approach was taken, including isolating while awaiting more information, and then following all advice from Healthline – this included testing negative. All students have been cleared to return to school [this week].” Christchurch’s Haeata Community Campus and Burnside High School also reported having students isolate after the outbreak in Wellington.

O’Neill faces his most ambitious singing role By Malcolm Hopwood
Ashburton’s famous tenor Simon O’Neill is about to face the greatest challenge of his career. Following Sunday’s concert at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, he lands in London today to start preparing for the principal role in Tristan und Isolde, one of Wagner’s most ambitious operas. It’s a marathon opera lasting five-and-a-half hours and O’Neill is confronted with over two hours of “straight out singing”. He has never sung the opera before, considered one of Wagner’s greatest, and he’s been preparing for it for over two years. “I sit at the piano, play it and sing it for two hours a day,” he said. “I perform an act a day.” Tristan und Isolde is so ambitious and exhausting, that the first tenor to ever sing the role, died a week later. O’Neill has no intention of dropping dead on stage. His preparation has been meticulous and he’s reduced his weight to be as fit as he can. “In the context of my career, I have to climb a mountain with this opera,” he commented.
I’d love to come home for an anniversary concert
SIMON O’NEILL He attributes Ashburton to being an important part of his success as an international singer. “When I was cycling over Ashburton Bridge from Tinwald car-
rying my euphonium, I never imagined I’d be performing in some of the top opera houses in the world,” he said. “But my training in Ashbur-
ton College’s Phoenix Chorus, tuition from music masters, Gordon McGhie and Robert Abern, the Ashburton Silver Band and playing the organ at Holy Name Church, all contributed to my musical education.” O’Neill starts rehearsals for Tristan this Sunday with a sixnight season of the opera being performed at Glyndebourne Festival in August. The opera will then be presented in a staged version at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall at the end of August. “It’s a full-on sing with a chorus and an orchestra of over 100 musicians.” The following morning, he’s on a 7am flight to Germany where he’ll perform as principal tenor in three Wagnerian operas – Gotterdammerung, Siefried and Die Walkure – at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, over the next three months. O’Neill is back at the end of November as soloist in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He’s booked through to 2025 but he harbours one wish. In December, O’Neill celebrates his 50th birthday and he’d like to return to Ashburton to sing. “I’d love to come home for an anniversary concert,” he said.

Crews arrived to find the house well ablaze, but it was extinguished shortly before 3am.

Many hands make light work By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz
Mountain Bike Ashburton has been blown away with the number of people offering a helping hand to work on its flood damaged trails over the weekend. A large portion of the mountain bike tracks on the town side suffered significant damage in the flooding and large sections of the track are going to take a lot of work to repair. The part deemed to be the easiest to get reopened was from State Highway 1 to Trevors Road. Mountain Bike Ashburton president James Reid said that on that particular stretch of track it was just a matter of clearing debris and silt and letting the track dry out even more. The working bees over the weekend attracted more than 60 people, Reid said. “We couldn’t have asked for anything better,” he said. “We are absolutely stoked with the turnout, the people that wanted to help out, and the people who have been doing behind the scenes work in preparation ahead of the working bee.”
Members of the public lent equipment and time to help shovel out silt and debris alongside the east side of the bike tracks. PHOTO JASON GOURLAY Around half of the volunteers over the weekend were not even club members, but just members of the public that frequently use the tracks in the area. The working bee on Saturday finished at the expected time of midday, and Reid said as soon as that stretch of track was open, people were using it straight away. On Sunday a handful of people came to help
at the impromptu working bee at the area behind the club’s Skills Park. “Other bits will be a bit of a mission,” Reid said. “But the Trevors Road track is back to where it was before the floods, if not better.” Another Mountain Bike Ashburton working bee will be held on July 10 from 9am, at the end of Melrose Road.

Queen’s juggernaut of JPs increases By Malcolm Hopwood
She might be back at Buckingham Palace, but three Mid Cantabrians swore faithful and true allegiance to her this week. Queen Elizabeth’s juggernaut of JPs just increased as Janet Cross, Grant Early and Kunal Saluja agreed to “well and truly serve her” at Ashburton District Court. Judge Dominic Dravitzki presided over the swearing in of the new Justices Of the Peace, reminding them to offer faithful and true service to the Queen and “do right by all manner of people without fear or favour.” In congratulating them, he said JPs are “marks of respect and responsibility in the community” and date back to Richard the First in the 12th century who created the positions as part of British feudal society. The three JPs signed the declaration and were congratulated by about 20 existing JPs and family members. Janet Cross and husband, Ron, live on their lifestyle block in Mayfield, running a contract-

Cross grew up in Ashburton district and has held various roles in community and education centres including Southern Netball Club, Mayfield Playcentre and Mayfield School.
She has taught yoga for over 10 years and is closely involved in Dru Yoga at a national level. Grant Early and wife, Jan, farm in the Ruapuna area on irrigated land that’s been in their family for several generations. He has interests in farming and industry goods projects. As part of his community involvement, he’s held leadership roles on the local domain and hall boards, A&P association, rugby and golf committees and his local Lions Club. His off-farm interests include family, tramping, boating, golf and watching their twin sons play rugby. Saluja was born in India and came to New Zealand as an international student in 2004. He is married to Divya and has two sons who attend Allenton School. Saluja lived in Auckland, taught at the Waikato Institute of Technology and was operations manager for Shell Fuel Stations. Since coming to Ashburton, Kunal and Divya own Allenton Diary and he’s an active member of the Ashburton Multi Cultural Trust.
Bright lights More than 500 homes will be illuminated with energy lights in Ashburton this winter. Following an initiative from Anglican Care and Anglican Parish, 10 parishioners knocked on doors in the Allenton suburb last Thursday or handed them out at Netherby School on Saturday. Ashburton Anglican Parish vicar, Joan Clark, said 360 energy lights were distributed on Thursday and around 200 handed out at the school. Door knockers left vouchers for people who were not home. “They received a positive response and came away surprised how warmly they were received,” Clark said. A decision on whether the initiative will be repeated next year is yet to be made.

cles and fencing, and was expecting about a thousand claims to be made – but a lot of farmers are still in the process of assessing damage. “Overall, our advice to anyone who needs insurance support is to call their insurer as early as they can. “They’re your advisor and will be able to help with your specific circumstances.” He advised taking photos to make
it easier to support a claim and to call an insurer before carrying out non-essential repairs. “From our perspective we just want to acknowledge what the people of wider Canterbury are going through and the challenges that this event has brought. From an FMG perspective we are looking to respond as quickly as we can and we’ve already got assessors on the ground,” Barrett said.

A Mid Canterbury grazing property has been confirmed with the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, the third new case in the district in the last month. The property is connected to the existing Canterbury cluster, a Ministry for Primary Industries spokesperson said. Another two properties, one in the Ash-burton district and the other in Selwyn, have been cleared of the disease after com com-pleting the culling, decontamination and cleaning process and are now able to get back to normal farming activities. All eight active confirmed properties are in the Ashburton and Selwyn districts. No farms that still have infected cattle on them had been required to move stock as a result of the Canterbury flooding, the spokesperson said.

OUR VIEW
Sexual harassment change needed By Daryl Holden daryl.h@theguardian.co.nz
I
t’s time to act and for urgent action to be taken nationally following the release of harrowing sexual harassment survey findings in Christchurch. The Christchurch Girls’ High School (CGHS) survey results should make all of us stop and think what the hell is going on, and what can we do about it and learn from it. And that includes in Mid Canterbury and at our high schools in Ashburton and Methven. We all need to have a say and help fast track change because the Christchurch survey was the ultimate sexual wakeup call. The survey found that more than 400 students at the school say they’ve been harassed, with 20 saying they’ve been raped. Raped, for goodness sake. Three students have apparently formally reported allegations to police and another nine were considering their next options. The how and why are questions we need to quickly look into. But surely, as children’s commissioner Andrew Becroft has stated, the issue of consent and gender equality education for boys is one that has to be addressed nationally. It’s impossible to disagree because a national survey may help provide solutions. It may unearth funding ideas for better preventative measures for men and boys around consent, healthy relationships, and gender equality, and, importantly, how to create safe ways for girls to report to authorities, especially the police. CGHS’s head girl Amiria Tikao, who spoke so beautifully and with such maturity on the survey findings, hoped it would spark change. Principal Christine O’Neill wants additional research and education implemented as soon as possible as part of a national sexual harassment conversation. Hear, hear to all of that. Something needs to happen because it appears we have a major cultural issue at play. It’s about attitudes and behaviours. There appears to be a growing concern that sexual harassment has become normalised for young people in school, online and in other unsupervised areas. Well, there’s nothing normal about it. Sexual abuse in any form is completely unacceptable. No young person should feel that it is a normal part of their daily lives. Of course, let’s not forget that sexual harassment is also a problem that reaches far beyond the school gates. There’s no doubt, though, that schools can, and should, play a key role in establishing a way forward but they can’t solve it alone. Nor should they be expected to. We need the Government and other agencies to play their part, too. That’s the very least we should do for those Christchurch Girls’ students trying to cope with life after being raped.
Government continues to commit support to Mid Canty By Jo Luxton

aluable and constructive meetings were held in Ashburton last week, as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern returned to our region to hear from local agencies and mayors first-hand in the aftermath of the May floods. Whilst here, the Prime Minister announced that the Government is injecting a further $4 million into relief funding to support our flood-affected farmers who are recovering from the damage of a historic one-in-200-year flood. An additional $100,000 will also be provided to the Mayoral Relief Fund to support Canterbury communities. We know that our farmers are dealing with a massive recovery effort following the recent floods and facing significant costs that aren’t covered by insurance. The flooding has caused widespread and significant damage across a number of districts and recovery efforts are ongoing and considerable. The Ministry for Primary Industries will be working alongside our local Federated Farmers to establish the criteria for the fund. It is important that farmers have a strong voice in the pa-

rameters of the fund – they know where the biggest need is as they are seeing and experiencing it daily. I was pleased to be able to host Jacinda Ardern back in the region again last week. I have been keeping in regular contact with her, and let her know how important it was for our local agencies, councils and farmers, that she returns to see more of the damage and to get first-hand accounts of the cleanup and help needed. I was pleased when she accepted my invitation to come back down south! Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown facilitated an informative meeting, where we were briefed by Civil Defence, Environment Canterbury, and all of the Canterbury
District mayors on the current situation and issues that each region is facing. The issue of the second Ashburton Bridge was raised – this is obviously a topic that is top of our priority list right now and I am getting a lot of queries around this. We have heard that the business case, that was expected to be completed by the end of June, has now been extended by three months due to the flooding. I understand that this is frustrating, but it also means that our business case can be strengthened by adding in all of the detail around the impact on our communities, and on the entire South Island, when the bridge was closed. Research has shown that our

economy loses $1 million a day when the bridge is closed – this is information that can now be added to the business case and we can put our best foot forward. We finished up our day with the Prime Minister on-farm. Returning to the Allens’ farm to view the extensive damage to their land, and to meet with Rural Women, Federated Farmers and Rural Support Trusts. The well-being of our farmers is paramount right now and it was important to hear how the floods have affected them, and how there is a lot of uncertainty and worry in the community as we get closer to calving and lambing. I am here for this community. Please don’t hesitate to email me at rangitatamp@parliament. govt.nz or to call my Ashburton office on 03-339-1030. I’m committed to continuing to support our community through this flooding event – and my doors are always open. I am your direct link to Wellington, to the Prime Minister, to the Minister for Primary Industries. If you need support, a question answered – please, reach out. Jo Luxton is a Labour MP. McAlwee prepped for final Aorangi finalist Dale McAlwee has had a hectic lead-up to this weekend’s Young Farmer of the Year grand final in Christchurch. PHOTO SUPPLIED
Young Farmer of the Year Aorangi finalist Dale McAlwee says the last few months have been hectic. As well as competing in this weekend’s FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final in Christchurch, McAlwee has also just started his first contract milking position on a farm near Ashburton. The first-time competitor at both regional and national level has been studying in the office as well as touching up on his general knowledge. “There is an element of practical skills in my day-to-day life, so I probably haven’t spent as much time on the practical stuff as I pos-
sibly should have, but I’ve been quite busy,” he said. He has previous experience on large mixed arable farms as well as growing up on the family sheep and bull beef farm that was later converted to dairy. His new contract milking position, which started in June, is on a Seafield farm milking 1200 cows. This is only about five minutes away from his previous role as assistant manager at Singletree Dairies, a large-scale operation milking about 2500 cows and employing 11 staff. McAlwee said he had gleaned a “fair few” tips from his former boss at Singletree Dairies, Will Grayling
who won the national Young Farmer of the Year title in 2011. “I quizzed him up a bit. “A lot of the challenge is mental, as much as it is skills. It is a matter of staying calm through it all and thinking clearly, which is easier said than done.” Mid Canterbury is also home to a second grand finalist, Jake Jarman who represents Taranaki-Manawatu. Days after winning his regional final he moved to Ashburton to grow his agricultural experience in banking, as a relationship associate with ANZ. Jarman’s physical preparation was hampered after he broke his
arm playing rugby for Southern at Hinds, getting his cast off just in time for the grand final. Running from Thursday to Saturday, the grand final’s main public showcase is the practical day on Friday at Innovation Park in Templeton from 7.30am to 3.30pm. The popular practical day showcases the innovation and technology being used by farmers to produce food and fibre more efficiently. Running alongside this competition will be the AgriKidsNZ and FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition for primary and secondary school- aged children respectively.
Jones tops winter feed comp again Ruralco Instore Days return for 2021 Ruralco’s annual Instore Days starting tomorrow will be adopting a hybrid approach with online sales available in addition to its traditional in-store marquee. Over the past 26 years the Ashburton-based rural supplies co-operative has run its popular Instore Days through its three retail outlets in Mid Canterbury, offering significant discounts to its farmer members. In 2020, Instore Days looked a little different. With Covid-19, Ruralco had to quickly adapt to a new format to ensure it could offer the same great deals and the latest in agricultural technology. “This year we want to make sure we can continue to provide exciting offers, along with a chance to catch up with our many participating suppliers in person, so for 2021 the event will become a hybrid. This means there are lots of ways to play,” Ruralco Group chief executive Rob Sharkie said. The opportunity to participate in this year’s Instore Days will run from Thursday to Sunday, and extend well beyond Ruralco’s three stores in Methven, Rakaia, and Ashburton, with Ruralco’s deals open to farmers throughout the country. At the Ruralco Ashburton store, the marquee is back on Thursday and Friday, with more than 90 businesses on site with deals. “As well as visiting us in store, our team can take orders by phone, email or online through the Ruralco website,” Sharkie said.
Dorie farmer Vaughan Jones says getting things done on time is key after winning the Mid Canterbury combined winter feed competition with a fodder beet crop yielding 29 tonnes a hectare. “There is no great recipe,” said Jones, who also won in 2019, with the competition not held last year because of Covid-19 restrictions. He also recommended the support of fertiliser and agronomy representatives. “It’s a team effort.” Milking 1100 cows, Jones grows 35ha of fodder beet for wintering his herd, along with kale, rape and greenfeed oats. The top tier of competitors from the three Mid Canterbury A&P associations (Ashburton, Methven and Mayfield), winter feed competitions competed in the combined grand final. Judging was held last week after being delayed by the Canterbury flooding.
J’s Conveying & Contracting Sheep Drenching, Injecting, Jetting & more
Winter feed crops were judged on evenness, lack of pests, disease and weeds, and yield. “Personally, I think it is the most important A&P association competition, as if you haven’t got feed you have nothing,” Schikker said. 2021 Mid Canterbury winter feed grand final results:

Hayden Sinclair grabbed four goals for Mid Canterbury on the weekend. HOCKEY
Back to business By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Youth hockey on centre stage Youth hockey took centre stage at the NBS Hockey Turf on Sunday with a busy day of action. The day started with the first of two weekends of junior Town v Country action in the morning with the younger years up first before the Years’ 6, 7 and 8 players get their chance this coming weekend. Then, during the afternoon two sides from the Southern United Hockey Club in Christchurch travelled to Ashburton to play against the two Mid Canterbury Under 13 sides. Both games were played in great spirit with a good experience for all players with further games scheduled before the end of the season. After a shock loss a week earlier the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side bounced back to form on the weekend, delivering one of their most telling blows of the season. The local side, who returned to the Canterbury Hockey Division One competition this season, solidified their spot within the top four of the competition with a 9-2 victory over High School Old Boys on Saturday afternoon – setting up a big few weeks ahead as they continued to push for higher honours. The win came after they knocked over competition leaders Carlton Redcliffs a fortnight ago, but then fell to Rangiora, in a match they really should have won the week prior. And with redemption required, the Mid Canterbury lads delivered it ten-fold, scoring goals with freedom throughout a match
they dominated from pretty much start to finish. Hayden Sinclair was the star of the show for the Mid Canterbury side, grabbing an impressive four goals for the match in a masterclass performance on the turf. Andy Moore opened the scoring for the side after about five minutes before Sinclair found his rhythm and effectively shut High School Old Boys out of the match. Brad Nordqvist, Thomas White, Steve Blain and a second from Moore saw the match rounded out for Mid Canterbury who moved closer to the top three teams in the competition with the win. They get a further opportunity to narrow that gap again this week when they take on Southern United this weekend at Marist Park at St Bede’s. The Southern side are second on the standings, seven-competition points ahead of the Mid Canterbury side. When they met earlier in the season, Southern won the match 3-1.
FOOTBALL
Change in fortunes for MC United By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
What a difference a week can make. After being thrashed 8-2 seven days earlier by Western AFC in Mainland Football’s Championship League, Mid Canterbury United’s Senior Men’s side showed that home ground advantage can count for a lot when they battled out a 1-all draw with the same side on Saturday. In a huge turnaround from the week prior, Mid Canterbury were actually in control for much of the match, leading 1-0 after a first-half goal to Ben Chute, and for a while it looked as though they were set to do the unthinkable and topple one of the competition’s front-runners. But while a late goal from the visitors put an end to those dreams, there were still plenty of positives, including some valuable competition points for the Mid Canterbury side at the end of 90 minutes of play. It’s been a good past month for the side, who have turned around some frustrating performances to show a lot more depth and quality on the paddock and it all bodes well for a strong final third of the season. They’ll now prepare to face Universi-
ties this week, and can lift themselves out of the bottom three of the competition with a victory. Saturday wasn’t quite as a happy for the Senior Reserves side though, with a tough 8-1 loss handed down by Western. In a man-of-the-match performance, Parker Bradford was the solitary goal-scorer for Mid Canterbury. Meanwhile, after eight weeks of domination, Mid Canterbury United’s Division Four side have claimed first round honours, winning the league phase and earning a promotion up into Division Three for the remainder of the season. They won 3-2 against Cashmere Technical on Saturday to round out the first stage of the season. Methven kept their hold on the Division One competition alive with another good win on the weekend as well, beating Burnham 3-1 at the Methven Domain. They now sit three points clear in the standings and have had the target firmly placed on their backs as the team to beat in the competition. On Sunday, a good round of local football was rounded off when the Mid Canterbury United women’s side grabbed another victory, beating Western AFC 3-2 to remain second in the Sunday Women’s competition.

Cantabs prove too tough By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton indoor bowlers felt the full power of a rampant Canterbury side on Saturday, when the two associations met for their annual representative fixture at the McNally Street Stadium. Both sides put up 24 players to compete through a full day of play which featured two matches of fours, pairs and singles. Ashburton made the best of starts in the morning round to lead after the fours and singles, but were unable to contain Canterbury post that, as they dominated across the floor to win the encounter 91-77. Meanwhile, the husband and wife pairing of Simon and Julie Thomas will shoot for a shot at national glory next weekend after winning the Ashburton leg of the New Zealand Mixed Pairs on Sunday.
The duo will now head to Christchurch to compete in the zone playoff against neighbouring districts, with the winner of that event qualifying for the New Zealand final late in the season. On Sunday, 11 teams entered the mixed pairs competition with six working their way through the qualifying stage to play knockout bowls. The Thomas pairing beat Michael Lawson and Chris Talbot in the first round, while Ken and Rowena Mackenzie accounted for Tom Palatchie and Joan Hardy. Mat Basset and sister, Cait – who returned to the indoor mats for the tournament, won through to the final with their semi-final win over Geoff and Bernice Laird, while the Thomases beat the Mackenzies in the other semi-final. In the final, it was a strong performance for the Thomas duo that saw them claim the title.
It’s never a safe assumption to make, but Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competitions should run true to form this week, the final set of matches for round two of the season. Only a minor miracle, in which Mt Somers somehow toppled Hampstead, will see any major changes to the make up of Premier 1. Hampstead should win, and thus give themselves victory in both the first and second rounds of the season, putting them in a really good space ahead of the third and final championship round, which begins next week. They take on Mt Somers in the final game on Thursday, with Mt Somers staring down the barrel of having to face the winning team from Premier 2 in a promotion/relegation match before the commencement of the championship round. Tomorrow night’s other two matches in Premier 1 will see United and Celtic battling it out for second place in the standings, while Methven will be locking horns with Southern.
Down in Premier 2, a win to Ashburton College A will see them likely to take on Mt Somers in the promotion and relegation match on July 6. The College side play Methven tomorrow night, with only Hampstead capable of taking top spot off them, but in order to do that they’d need to beat Celtic by more than 50 goals to even come close to getting ahead of College. The third match in Premier 2 sees Southern and College B taking each other on, with the loser of that match facing a promotion and relegation match against the winner of Premier 3. Methven hold down top spot in that division currently, equal on points with United, and both sides should pick up wins this week. Methven take on Mt Somers in the 8.15pm match, while United will play Ashburton College U18A. Meanwhile on Sunday the first of two representative trials for the Mid Canterbury Senior side were held at the EA Networks Centre. Two dates have been scheduled for coaches to put players through their paces with the first target of the season the Hanan Shield tournament in Ashburton on August 1. Players will return again this weekend for the second trial day before a final squad is selected.

TIMARU HARNESS
Winning dreams no longer in the mist By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton horseman Graeme Ward made a rare trip to the winners’ circle on Sunday. The respected trainer produced maiden trotter, Dreamsinthe Mist to win at Timaru, capping off a good run of form for the horse which he picked up from Greg and Nina Hope, who couldn’t get him to trot fluently. In just his eighth start for Ward, the four-year-old gelding finally broke through, coming from off the speed to win impressively with a strong turn of foot at the business end of the race – underlining both his trainer’s patience and skill at getting the best out of a horse. It was triple delight for Ward, who not only trained and drove the horse – but also races him with wife Jan. After 12 starts for his previous trainers, Dreamsinthe Mist, who was also tried as a pacer for a while, has picked up two minor

It was the first win for Ward since 2018, when Hot N Fast won at Rangiora, and only his third
driving win in the past 14 years, although there’s been limited opportunities in the sulky during that time. The long-awaited win wasn’t the only reason Mid Canterbury locals were smiling at Timaru on Sunday either. Trainer Terry May added another winner to his name when The Terrorfier came from well back in the running to win impressively with son, Ricky May in the bike. The four-year-old son of Terror To Love had been knocking on the door during the campaign and delivered in fine style for owners, Judy May along with Warwick and Sue Bell. The win took May another step closer to the magical 3000 career New Zealand harness driving wins, with the legendary horseman now just two wins shy of becoming just the third driver in the
history of harness racing in New Zealand to get there. Sarah O’Reilly also kept herself in touch with fellow Mid Cantabrian, John Morrison, in the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship, when she piloted Shards In Manhattan to victory for her bosses, Cran and Chrissie Dalgety. But Morrison had a response too, keeping the margin at six wins with one month of racing remaining, when his own horse, Harrison delivered the biggest performance of the day to win the last race by 10 lengths. Taken to the front early, the enigmatic pacer was always in cruise control, and when asked to sprint up coming off the back straight, he left his rivals in his wake, clearing away for a dominant win while a motionless Morrison sat behind him, just enjoying the ride.

RUGBY
It may have been a competition, but the inaugural Heartland Women’s 10s rugby event held at Methven on Sunday, signalled the intent of a whole lot more. Four squads of players trekked to Methven for the event, which was created to provide further opportunities to grow and prosper the women’s game outside of the major centres, and all five unions that were represented were left singing the praises of the tournament by Sunday afternoon. Mid Canterbury were joined at the

event by a combined team from South Canterbury and the West Coast, as well as Buller and North Otago. Each team playing the other across three rounds of play throughout the morning. Mid Canterbury claimed overall honours from the event, but more emphasis was placed on the importance of creating pathways and opportunities with the event likely to become a permanent fixture on the annual calendar, and perhaps even grow into the future.
School aged rugby will be showcased today at Ashburton College. The inaugural Pack The Park event will be held this afternoon with two highly anticipated matches on the grounds in an effort to put a spotlight on the hard work, dedication and passion that is going into growing the game of rugby at a schoolboy, and schoolgirl level. The day will be highlighted by the Mid Canterbury Combined XV match against Selwyn Combined in the Miles Toyota Cup for schoolboy rugby around the Crusaders catchment. But before that a traditional inter-school battle will take place when the Mount Hutt College Under 15 side travel into town to take on their Ashburton College counterparts in the curtain raiser. The day will feature many special aspects with former 1st XV players attending the match to form a guard of honour as the side runs out onto the paddock before their game and Crusader, Dallas McLeod will be on hand to present jerseys to the teams before the match as well. The Under 15 match kicks off at 1.20pm before the main event at 3pm.

Ashburton Golf Club
Some big games were played last Saturday in the Presidents cup and plate. In the cup I only got half the predictions correct, but the strong favourites are showing themselves. Robbie played well, but he ran into the freight train that is Sean Strange. After a recent wrist injury, when he slipped off, Sean has bounced back and is looking stronger than ever and could actually be a dark horse for this year’s senior champs. His next victim, sorry typo, I mean opponent will be Richard McKernan, who struggled past an injured and under the weather Charlie. It speaks volumes for Charlie that he managed to get off his sick bed and give Richie a game. It was still a close game, but I reckon if Charlie had had the strength to get dressed rather than just playing in his pyjamas and slippers, he could have pipped it. On the other side of the draw, Ram Clarke continued giving his life lessons to the young guns as he dismantled Young Spud, but his run may have come to an end as “the beast” Josh Coyle now stands in his way. Josh has not yet played the last 5 holes in this year’s knockout, and he doesn’t care about reputations after handing down a damn good thrashing to poor old Gaby. I honestly can’t see why they are bothering to play the games this Saturday, it would make much more sense to just jump straight to the final. Oh well I suppose we have to follow procedure. Good luck to all. In the plate, we have two great semi-finals in store Barry Jury will take on Steve McCloy and Tom Blacklow will lock horns with Dave Hampton. Four good players and all of them, real nice blokes. If I am pushed for a prediction I will take Barry and Tom, but both will need to go to the last or even extra holes to get the results. In the game of the day Ken Clucas threw off his shackles shooting a net 66 for a +6 in the par round, winning by a clear 2 shots from Chris Lovelock and Bevan Wilson. This Sunday we are back in pennants action again. The Alex team are at Tinwald playing Temuka. After writing last week I got a great message about the last pennants game. It seemed that the team had a late call off so had to play one player light, but good old Jamie Stone won his own game and also took down two opponents in the fourball for a great result. Well done big fella. I forgot to mention the Redpath team last time, so Davo gave me a serve. I had a quick look to see who will be beating them this week and it turns out that its Pleasant Point’s turn for an easy ride. Silver lining is that they don’t have to go far for their hiding, its only at Tinwald. In the strongest division both the Patterson teams are coming off great wins. The Vision insurance pups, fresh off downing Mayfield will be playing league leaders Fairlie. The Old dogs will be hoping to put 2 wins back-to-back for the first time in, well, ever! They are taking on a very strong Gleniti team with an almost full squad to pick from. These two games are at Mayfield. Oh well, that’s enough cheek for this week. See you around the course. Good golfing.

Our June Club night programme was organised by Robin Tuanui. Theme “Trip around New Zealand”. Play in was Karen on the Piano. Great choice of songs - “A closer walk with thee”, “Amazing Grace”, “How thou art”, just to name a few. Karen has a lovely touch on the piano, so easy to listen to. Our 38th AGM took place for 2021. The Skiffle Group was first up with a total of 17 talented people. 15 ladies and 2 men (poor blokes). They either play instruments of various kinds or sing. Gee are they great to listen to! They always play such catchy tunes. It was the Ukulele Group up next. Their outfits were amazing - loved your hat Ian! Gumboots and silver wigs. You guessed it “Fred Dagg” the old gumboot song that we love to sing along to. They also sang “My old mans the dustman” just to name a couple. The Accordion Group was up next with seven people playing them and Bernard on the keyboard. They played the “Ashburton March” written by Jim Lloyd, a local man. Lots of us didn’t know that. It was a really nice tune. They are a great group and they play so well together. They played four tunes, thanks Michael. Raffles were drawn and the winners were:

Ann, Don, John, Debbie, Ann S, Dennis and Janet. The Silver Band came to entertain us for the first time. Allan Aberheart “Band Master” kept us entertained with five great songs. They played “This is Brass”, “One moment in Time” (my favourite), “Because we Believe”, “Because of you” and to finish off “Theshoop shoop song”. Thank you so much to the 10 talented people. Fiona knows how to play those drums. Irene and Suzie played together. Suzie was on the Piano and Irene on the Accordion. Then Suzie played the piano. Gee we all thoroughly enjoyed her talent, she was just superb. Poor Irene was in pain with her back but she was a real committed lady and still had that heavy accordion on her shoulders. Hope you get better soon. The last item was the Ukulele Group in the Maori costumes, singing a Maori bracket and they did so well. They played “Hine-ehine”, “Maori Hangi” and four others. Colin sang, played the Banjo and the mouth organ, clever fellow. Their final number was “Goodnight Kiwi” which we could relate to as it used to finish off the TV programmes years ago. Special Thanks to Robin for a fabulous evening. Supper was served, thanks to Janet, Jill and Graham. Our next Club night meeting is 7 pm on July 19 at the Senior Centre, 206 Cameron Street. You are most welcome to come along.

Ashburton Toastmasters
The Toastmaster (Jeff) - in light of recent goings on - decided on a flood theme for the meeting. Chiyo’s word of the evening (illustrious) was used sparingly. Jamie delivered his icebreaker speech “on the importance of communication” which touched on why he joined Toastmasters. A personal finance course at university changed Jamie’s career trajectory to the point that he is now an accountant. Jamie recognises that some financial and accounting concepts are hard to understand and used an analogy to cricket which made them easier for a broad audience to understand. Rebecca conducted a practical session on “values” which asked us to identify our top 5 values from an extensive list and then compare our values with the values of those around us. It was an interesting exercise which highlighted the diversity of values held, even among seemingly similar people. Adi rounded off the evening’s speeches with his pitch to become a part of the board of the Water Zone Committee. His

Ashburton Woodworkers
Chair Dave Strong welcomed a smaller gathering of 8, with 4 apologies. He mentioned Boulevard Day on September 24, suggested that we could create items for sale as a fundraiser along with a raffle. Show and Tell: John Millichamp: 3 small yew saucers. Dave Strong; walnut bowl. John Smart demonstrated making a honey dipper from a block of ash. With his typical skill using a roughing gouge the block became a cylinder. When satisfied he showed us his skew chisel skills, that not all of us are confident to use. With the use of technology, from a large TV screen, we all had a good view and understanding of what John was doing. Using callipers he marked out how the dipper was to look, also measured the diameter. With a parting and a skew chisel various grooves, beads were created. Some sanding involved so that it became safe to use as its intended use, even that one could place inside one’s mouth the remove any existing honey. Chris Thompson made a very professional job of his dipper. Thanks John for your demonstration.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): People pass every day; transactions occur – pleasantries and less. But a meeting of the minds such as the one you’ll have today is not a thing to take lightly. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Devotion comes at a cost. Whenever you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to other things. It cannot be any other way. If you are not conscious of what you are saying yes and no to, it becomes clear now. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): How often a thing happens is a significant and defining characteristic of its nature. Establishing a rhythm matters; otherwise, no one can dance to the song. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It’s clicking for you. When you throw the dice in front of a movie crew and your character needs to win, the numbers are irrelevant. You’re a winner if you act like one. Take it. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Conflict is healthy. People are animals. Animals need to establish territory. Feel good that people around you express themselves. Listen and communicate your way to peace. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Fate has spoken, and quite favourably. So don’t question and wonder whether you’re working hard enough. Accept the bounty of a perfect plan coming together, even if it wasn’t yours. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Who do you think you are? It’s an impertinent question from a stranger and a relevant and enlightening question from you to you. The answer is not one thing. You are becoming. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): What keeps you from following your own advice? Likely, it’s a conflict between what the head and body want. To communicate your wishes to the body, you must translate them into the body’s language. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There’s a dynamic playing out. Give it time. Try not to judge anything or make decisions while you’re in the thick of it. Let things settle, and then see where you’re at. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You want to measure your progress, though today, it’s unclear what the most relevant metric would be. How do you measure a feeling? Maybe in what you’re willing to do to experience or avoid it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Document what happens today, because later, you will find the evidence reassuring and probably entertaining. Furthermore, you might be able to take something about this to the bank. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Most things you chase are going to run from you. Seduction works best in a variety of instances. For instance, it’s the ones who don’t seek validation who tend to get it, a principle that also works in reverse.

Celtic flyer Elyh McKibbin was in fine form as he scored three tries to help his side to victory against Methven on Saturday. Full match report on guardianonline.co.nz PHOTO HEATHER MACKENZIE 260621-HM-4129

Officially consider the cat to be firmly ensconced among the pigeons of Watters Cup rugby. Any visions of grandeur that the local competition was going to run true to the form of the Combined Country competition went out the window on Saturday, when both Southern and Methven, who won in round one, fell to the swords of Rakaia and Celtic respectively. And so, the form book goes right out the window, and it’s anyone’s competition. It was Rakaia who provided the biggest shock of the weekend though, when they comfortably accounted for Southern out at Mayfield, winning 26-16 – grabbing four valuable competition points in the process.
As they tend to do, Rakaia really come into their own at Watters Cup time, but after a tough season so far, few would have expected them to roll the Combined champions. There were signs in their last-minute defeat to Methven the week earlier that they were on track, but the result is still a huge one in terms of the season thus far. They scored four good tries to grab the win, led by Lote Limadeni from the side of the scrum, who crashed over for a double, while Seta Koroitamana and Gordon Hausia also dotted down. Thomas Whittaker kept up his good kicking form with three conversions. For Southern, it creates an interesting situation. They fielded close to a full-strength side on the weekend, but were outplayed by their rivals. Tries to James Hastings and
Villame Ogotia kept them in the match, while George Williams added two conversions, but it wasn’t enough to repel the power of Rakaia. The win moved Rakaia to the top of the standings, but with the next three teams all just one point behind them, anything seems possible at this stage. Methven will head to a bye this week after they were left answerless to a barrage of Celtic attacks on the weekend which saw them down 0-24 at half-time. As many expected, the green machine is a serious contender for Watters Cup glory, and showed all that promise and more in their performance to win 36-15. A hat-trick to winger, Elyh McKibbin set the tone. His individual skill was on show throughout the match as he beat defenders, created good space and put him-
self in really good positions to convert possessions into points throughout the match. Hooker, Max Stapleton was equally as effective, scoring a double himself – but accounting for plenty of work around the paddock as his stocks continue to grow while Gerard Burke also managed to dot down. Methven did fight back in the second half, but the horse had already bolted by that point, and a stoic Celtic defence never allowed them to get fully back into the match. Tauiri Kepa grabbed his second try for the season in
just his second match for the losing side, while Osea Baisagale and Henry Miller also found their way over the line. The weekend’s results set up a mouth-watering round three of the competition with Celtic set to head to Hinds to take on Southern in what should be an absolute belter of a match, while Rakaia will be out to build on their momentum when they host Hampstead at the Rakaia Domain. Perhaps, only after this week will the puzzle of who deserves the billing of top dog in the Watters Cup be clearer.
