Nurses ‘should be elevated to Mother Teresa status’ Malcolm Hopwood Betsy Ramalasou is known as the “crazy lady.” She’s a nursing student who lives in Ashburton, studies in Timaru, works at Christchurch Hospital and is a beauty therapist and makeup artist on the side. She’s in her second year of studying for a Bachelor of Nursing degree, based at the Ara Institute of Technology’s Timaru campus and working the weekends at Christchurch Hospital. She’s known as crazy because, to achieve her degree, she’s willing to work 80 hours a week at either Christchurch or Timaru hospitals. At present she’s on placement at Timaru at the day patient clinic while in Christchurch she’s a student nurse in the Surge Workforce Team. During the week Betsy, 34, and her one-year-old daughter, Astrid, leaves Ashburton at 4.30am to nurse in Timaru, returning around 6pm and at weekends, she works the shifts at Christchurch Hospital, mostly in the Covid wards. For her dedication she was acknowledged this month by Christchurch District Health Board CEO, Peter Bramley. “I’m working seven days a week. I hardly have a life,” she said. As a Cook Islander, she recognises the importance of her parents and grandparents as being “number one priority” and gives that same commitment to the Covid patients in the ward. “I treat them as my family. I give them my assurance they’ll receive the best care I can give,” she said. “It’s been heartbreaking seeing the seriously ill, distressed and struggling for breath. I’ve been able to reassure them and give them extra care.” Her satisfaction is seeing patients leave in a better condition than when they were admitted. Ramalasou has experienced

What the district’s movers and shakers want in the 2022 Budget Daniel Alvey

With a new budget being released this afternoon, we surveyed a wide range of community leaders to see what they wanted to see in the 2022 Budget.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president David Clark “First and foremost financial prudence. We need the government to learn to live within its means, we cannot continue to borrow against the next generation’s taxes. All businesses in New Zealand are being called to live within their means, we need the government to live within its means because the level of borrowing that is going on to support a social lolly scramble is not sustainable.”

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown

Rural mental health advocate Craig Wiggins

“Whatever money they’re spending which seems to be a lot, that it is spent and there is accountability for the spending of it, and it delivers the projects that it is required to deliver and someone or some people are accountable for delivering that. To ensure the services that the money is for are delivered in the appropriate time and manner.”

“I would like to see money spent where it matters. Huge advertising campaigns and money going towards mental health celebrities, I would like see it back, empowering communities and teaching communities how to look after themselves and how to stay connected. Community strengths instead of the wastefulness. Enabling these networks in the rural communities where we have been left behind.”

AA Canterbury West Coast chairman John Skevington

Ashburton College principal Ross Preece

“Everyone will be wanting something to alleviate the financial pressure with rising inflation, not only for seniors but across the board really. Access to affordable health is an issue, people being able to get timely appointments that has been a concern. Health is going to feature hugely in the budget, so let’s hope that some of that will make it easier for people to follow up on health issues in a timely way.”

“Tax thresholds raised to offset the effect inflation has had on family incomes. The temporary fuel and RUC relief package made by Government earlier in the year made permanent. A higher percentage of taxes collected from fuel and RUCs actually spent on roading and mobility instead of being siphoned off for use in other areas. A realistic and quick immigration policy adopted for agriculture based workers to get the economy moving again.”

“My greatest fear from the budget is, with the resumption of overseas travel, schools will lose a whole lot of young teachers who’ve delayed their OEs until now. Encouraging teachers to New Zealand from overseas might ease the pressure, but won’t answer the problem.”

“I would like to see more funding for core services, such as police and Oranga Tamariki. Especially Oranga Tamariki, because I think they are underfunded in supporting vulnerable children in our community. They don’t have enough resources to do it that is something from our organisation (Safer Mid Canterbury) that we’ve seen.”

Longer parking impacts on council’s fine income Jonathan Leask

Parking infringements have significantly decreased thanks to longer parking in central Ashburton. The central section of the West Street car park, encompassing 83 parking spaces, was extended from 120 to 180 minutes at the end of February. The Ashburton District Council reviewed the time-restricted parking as part of the $15m revitalisation of the CBD. The two end sections of the car park, 142 spaces, are free for allday parking. Council strategy and compliance group manager, Jane Donaldson, said parking officers have received some positive verbal feedback when out on patrol. Before the changes the council’s data showed there was high demand for the all-day parking, with 97 per cent peak occupancy, while the central spaces had a peak occupancy of about 60 per cent. The change has seen a significant reduction in parking infringements. “A small number of tickets for overstaying are issued each week, approximately three to four, but on the whole, shoppers welcome

The Ashburton District Council increased the restricted parking time in the centre of the West Street car park to 180 minutes earlier this year. the additional allowance to get back to their cars on time. “Previously, two to three tickets a day were issued for overstaying in this area.” Up until March 31, the council has only received $132,000 from parking in the financial year which is $157,879 off the budgeted intake for the full year of $290,777. The variance has been put

down to the removal of the old coin operated stand-alone parking meters that were removed to make way for the yet to be installed parking sensors. The council’s financial report also states that parking infringement income was affected by the Government’s introduction of a grace period for warrants of fitness and vehicle registrations.

The town’s lone pay and display unit serving the Cass Street carpark is generating some parking revenue. The council has also introduced an over 80s parking permit in April that allows a permit holder to park for twice the allotted time in any over 30 minute parks. Donaldson said the council has so far issued 42 of the permits.

Fundraiser for the Topp twins a sell-out Lili Haydon The Topp twins fundraiser has sold out. A group of close friends have come together to celebrate the twins this July, after the twins announced in March that they had both been diagnosed with breast cancer. Close friend of Jools and Lynda Topp, Lana Doublet has created the Topp Friends Dinner and Show Fundraiser at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall in Methven.

Doublet and a few other friends have been planning this night for the past few weeks. “All coming together to celebrate with friends and family - (it’s) what they need at the mo-

ment,’’ Doublet said. It comes after the twins, 64, revealed in March that they had both been diagnosed with breast cancer. Tickets went on sale on Monday and according to Doublet only five tickets were left by the end of the day. “I am blown away,’’ she said. Doublet said she was going to see if there were more options to open up the seating arrangement. Tickets were $65 each which includes dinner by Mid Canterbury Spit Roast and Chuck Norris BBQ, and a show featuring artists such as Anika Moa. “I want the girls to come watch the show rather than have to perform themselves,’’ Doublet said. Doublet is thankful for the sponsors who are mainly Mid Canterbury-based businesses who have donated funds to go towards covering the cost of accommodation and travel expenses for the artists. Others have donated items to go towards an auction they will also hold. Doublet is running the event as a cost-neutral event. All the money raised from the night will go to the twins. Doublet wants to give back to the twins after them giving so much of themselves to New Zealand over the past 25 years. “I have grown up with them and then have become friends with them,’’ she said.

Doublet hopes the twins cna sit back, relax and just enjoy what their friends have put to-

gether for them. The event has now sold out, but Doublet is looking into hav-

ing a live auction for those who missed out so they can still support the cause.

Hospice is also there for the long haul clients Malcolm Hopwood “We’re here for the last three years, not the last three days,” says Hospice Mid Canterbury. Their message, during Hospice Awareness Week, emphasises the range of services they offer to people diagnosed with palliative conditions, but who still have months or years to live. Client support co-ordinator, Sarah MacAvoy, said Hospice Mid Canterbury provides a unique and special free-of-charge service which complements existing palliative care in Ashburton District. “We’re only one of five ‘no beds, no meds’ hospices in New Zealand which offer a holistic approach to a client’s end of life,” she said. By that she means their 105 clients, who’ve either self-presented or were referred by health authorities, enjoy a range of services such as counselling, massage, reiki, biography writing, exercise, and armchair travel. “We strive to enhance quality of life for people dealing with illness and end of life,” she said. MacAvoy also wants to emphasise that hospice isn’t purely ring fenced for cancer sufferers. She points out 60 per cent of their clients have dementia and the remainder are people with serious organ and neurological conditions ranging from heart, lung, liver and kidney conditions to those with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and motor neuron disease. Many attend hospice in Sealy Street to give their caregivers a break. “If caregivers fall apart, their patient would have to go into permanent care,” former manager, Christine Wilson, said.

Camp ground closed

The Rangitata Camping Ground has closed over winter, but will be recommissioned on August 1. The camp ground has been open year-round for the past few years, but the retirement of the camp ground caretakers has reverted it to a nine-month operation. The camp ground could be used by freedom campers, but there will be no electricity available or access to the camp ground’s kitchen, laundry, and ablution facilities – with council maintained public toilets available at the river mouth. Council will be reviewing the camp ground operations later in the year.

A favourite activity is the Friday exercise programme. “It’s the most popular because of the social connections clients make and it assists their

mobility,” MacAvoy said. “Our clients range from people who can only move their hands to those fully active.” Despite the free service Hospice Mid Canterbury provides, they don’t receive “a single cent” from the government. Funding comes from donations and grants from the community which MacAvoy said has become more difficult because of Covid. “This week we want to make people aware of what we do so they can come to us for help,” she said.

EA Networks Centre is closing its gym and fitness facilities an hour earlier from next week in another step to reduce operating costs. Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said the facility had been reviewing operations so it ran as cost-effectively as possible and visitor data showed only a small number of people had been using the gym and fitness facilities in the final hour of the day. The move comes a month after earlier closing times were introduced for the pools and aquatic area.

Waste minimisation The Ashburton District Council has adopted its draft solid waste management and minimisation plan for public consultation. The plan sets out the council’s vision, goals, and targets for waste minimisation and outlines an action plan to achieve the desirable outcomes. Consultation closes on June 23.

Waka Kotahi spending under the spotlight BY JONATHAN LEASK

What Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has spent on consultants in the past four years could have paid for four bridges across the Ashburton River. For its proposed second urban bridge the Ashburton District Council has had to produce a business case to see if the projects is worth the estimated $40m investment, so to hear the figures around the agency’s spending was not impressive reading for mayor Neil Brown.

Since 2019, Waka Kotahi has spent $145 million on consultants, covering things like the environment and planning, and only spent $200 million on actual construction. “It’s a horrendous figure,” Brown said. “There is obviously too many consultants, designers, and planners and not enough construction workers building stuff.” Brown supplied an example as the planning and design is under way for the median barrier safety upgrades along State Highway 1

between Rakaia and the Selwyn river, but he is aware that there is no budget for the project. Since 2017, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has also more than doubled its communications team from 32 staff to 88 – 65 of whom earn $100,000 or more. That’s over $650,000 on public relations that could be better spent on actual infrastructure Brown said, as without justification it was a ludicrous number of communications staff. Then there is the Road to Zero campaign which has almost $200

million of spending earmarked to get New Zealand to try and achieve zero road deaths or serious injuries by 2030. “We want to get the road toll down but improvements to roading is money better spent to get the intersections safer, the highways safer than on an [advertising] campaign.” In February, Waka Kotahi’s James Caygill told the Ashburton councillors that the funding mechanisms for the land transport system were in dire need of a review, and there was a commit-

ment from the crown to review land transport funding. Brown believed that the funding review now also needed to incorporate how that funding is then spent.

Synthetic Nitrogen Fertiliser Limit What farmers need to do To help protect and improve our waterways, a limit now applies to the amount of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser applied to pastoral land. This was introduced as part of the Essential Freshwater package. Carefully managed, fertiliser is a useful farming tool. Street art projects win creative grants Do you

qualify for a rates rebate?

Two street art projects designed to add life and colour to Ashburton are among projects to receive funding from the national Creative Communities Scheme.

Ashburton District Council is concerned some low-income ratepayers in the district are missing out on a rates rebate, which could cut up to $665 off their rates bill.

Seven groups were granted just over $13,000 for various projects in the district. Triangle precinct developer Justin Skilling was granted $5000 for a large mural, similar to others in the area that he has commissioned from internationally recognised artist Wongi Wilson.

The Government’s rates rebate scheme provides a partial refund for people who pay rates to the council and around 800 people received a rebate for the previous financial year.

He is keen to promote the Triangle for its street art and cultural appeal and says the existing murals have been well received and well photographed. More murals would further enhance the area and town. Some $2300 was granted for an art programme to paint EA Networks’ roadside cabinets. EA Networks and Ashburton District Council will be partners in the programme, which is similar to the Chorus cabinet art programme. It has been found that cabinets that have been painted with murals do not generally get tagged as much as nonpainted cabinets. Two suitable cabinets have already been identified at Hinds and Rakaia, and artists will be invited to create and submit designs, which will be chosen by a panel including Mayor Neil Brown. The artists will be paid a fee for painting the cabinet and have their material costs reimbursed. A community art project at the Staveley

A Wongi Wilson mural in the Triangle has plenty of fans.

Campsite was granted $2000 for the first phase of a project to create site specific art and forest sculptures, helping people reconnect with nature and encouraging them to be interested in the native forest that surrounds the camp. The CanInspire Charitable Trust was granted $2087 to help run seven CanBead workshops. The workshops are free for people experiencing illness, trauma or personal loss and people are taught basic jewellery and beading skills to make a necklace, bracelet, earrings or other beaded craft. Other grants included $500 to Arts

Canterbury for an annual booklet promoting galleries and artists, $390 to the Ashburton Writers’ Group to run a short story competition for children and adults, $740 to Kristen Dunne to run creative art classes for the general public, and $1650 to Rakuto Kurano to include an Ashburton venue in a national violin quartet tour in July. An Ashburton assessment committee decided the successful grant recipients last week and another round of funding applications will open on 1 August 2022. Go to our grants and funding page for more information.

Taking a stand against online trolls It helps to have broad shoulders when you are elected to public office. As a Councillor, you must have time, energy and passion for the district. In making decisions that affect the lives of residents, you also need to balance a range of views and needs, and consider things like affordability, sustainability and wellbeing. So it helps to have an inquiring mind too. However, as this year is a local body election year, I feel that good people might hesitate to put their hand up for council because of the increasing vitriol of keyboard warriors. Perhaps now is the time for those warriors to stand themselves! There’s a raft of information about what constitutes harmful digital communications, but having been the subject of some myself, I would like to offer my thoughts to those who attack from behind the safety of the screen: Before you press the send button, please re-read and think about

what you are saying to that person, or organisation that you are about to attack.

And would you be willing to follow words with action, and stand yourself for public election? While the job can be rewarding, it’s not as easy as it first may appear. As councillors we have to balance up a wide range of views, needs and wants, against what’s affordable, practical and sustainable, and determine how it will affect the wellbeing of our district. Behind the scenes, there are rules and regulations we have to abide by, and we are accountable to regional or central Government. It’s a complex system and as councillors we spend many hours reading, visiting, and going

“We are getting down to the last few weeks and encouraging ratepayers who receive superannuation or other Government assistance, or are on low incomes, to check if they meet the income level required to qualify. “The level for eligibility varies, depending on income, the amount of rates you pay and dependants, so some people might qualify for the full rebate or for a lesser amount. If you’re not sure, then call our Customer Services team on 3077700 or drop in to the Council office and find out." See our website rates page for more info.

Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Hamish Riach said the facility had been reviewing operations so it ran as costeffectively as possible and visitor data showed only a very small number of people had been using the gym and fitness facilities in the final hour of the day.

Is what you are about to post true? Will it affect that person or group’s wellbeing? Do you know the full story, or the facts and figures? What is your personal agenda? I invite you to put yourself in your victim’s shoes. How would you feel?

Chief Executive Hamish Riach said the deadline for rebates in the current financial year was approaching and ratepayers had until the end of June to apply.

through facts, before we debate the issues around the council table. This is our job and we are expected to ask the hard questions, both for and against, before any decision is made. You personally may not like the decision, but at the end of the day we are here to represent the whole district, not sections of it. We all want the Ashburton district to be a great place to work, live and play. Yes, we should hold our elected members accountable, but we need to encourage good people to put their hand up for our local elections, without fear of being torn down.

“Like many other recreation centres around the country, Covid-19 has had a big impact on the EA Networks Centre. Closing the gym an hour earlier will help ease pressure on its budget and while it will need to be confirmed in our Annual Plan, we’re proposing to keep memberships at their current prices." Big Mill Creek clean-up nears finish line The big clean-up of Mill Creek should be complete next month and the waterway will be given an annual spring clean thereafter to ensure it stays in good condition.

PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that the Ashburton District Council, for the purpose of allowing Ashburton Event Centre to hold the Ashburton College Ball, proposes to close the following road to ordinary vehicular traffic for the period indicated hereunder.

Contractors working for the Ashburton District Council have been manually clearing the creek and its edges, using hand tools and weedeaters, to ensure the creek bed is not disturbed. Water in Mill Creek is mostly stockwater, though the creek also conveys stormwater as needed.

Road proposed to be closed: • WILLS STREET, from 211 Wills Street (Event Centre - Cass Street end) to 197 Wills Street (Neumanns Tyres – East Street end).

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said the creek was an important part of the town’s water infrastructure, but it was also home to small fish and watercress grew in parts. “The work has taken a bit longer than expected because of Covid-19. Every time a worker tested positive progress slowed, but we have gained good momentum in the past two months and the clean-up is on track to be finished in June. It’s not easy working in water all day.” Parts of the creek that have been completed so far include the entire section in Braebrook, and Turton Green through to the bridge at Pages Road. Work continues along sections of the creek through Argyle Park. Grass and weeds, tree branches and other organic waste removed from the creek are taken to a disposal facility. Mr McCann said access to the creek was a

Period of closure: From 7pm until 9.30pm on Thursday, 23 June 2022. Any person objecting to the proposal is called upon to lodge notice of their objection and grounds thereof in writing or email to Council by 4pm on Friday 3 June 2022. Crew from contractors ACL have been working in Mill Creek.

challenge at times, particularly as so many residential properties backed onto the waterway. “We have really appreciated those residents who have kept their creek boundaries free of rubbish and well maintained, and it makes it easier for the annual maintenance going forward.” Annual maintenance will be in spring, when contractors will return to the creek with hand tools and weed sprayers.

Some areas of Mill Creek underwent major stabilisation and enhancement works between 2009 and 2017, to stabilise banks and improve the flow capacity during flood events. The waterway has had a long history in the Ashburton township and surrounds, and served several functions (as a water source for use at a flour mill and stockwater race). The creek has been managed for flood control and drainage since the late 1970s.

Artists, Kim Vessey, Sophie Kettley and Jess Bleach, will sing the chart-topping number that gave new wave band, Berlin, its greatest success. Take My Breath Away is part of a montage of Oscar winning songs, hits in their own right, but which also enhanced the soundtrack of a film. Often, they were more memorable than the movie itself. “We knew Top Gun Maverick was being released this year, 35 plus years after the original, but only found out this week, it’s having its global launch on our opening night,” musical director, Malcolm Hopwood said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase Take My Breath Away which is an enduring song that’s lasted the distance and is still as popular as the original movie.” The company are top guns and will be in ‘cruise control’ when they perform their special tribute Hopwood said. In the sequel, which stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, John Hamm and Val Kilmer, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) is assigned to train a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission for the US Pacific Fleet. Penny Benjamin (Connelly) is a bar owner and single mother who’s Maverick’s love interest. “We’ve commissioned former Ashburton musician, Roger Buchanan, to write an updated arrangement of the song. We want it to take the audience’s breath away,” Hopwood added. The 1986 hit is one of 25 memorable

Ashburton’s own Top Gun aircraft is the Hawker Siddley Harrier the RAF flew until the 1980s. Three Waters transition work already under way Jonathan Leask The transition work towards the Three Waters entities for local councils is under way. The Ashburton and Selwyn councils have received the first information requests from the Department of Internal affairs (DIA) National Transition Unit (NTU) which is tasked with executing the Government’s decisions on Three Waters reform. Ashburton District Council’s infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann confirmed they had received the first two requests for information from the NTU, the first in January and the second in March. The requests have asked information on three waters’ staffing and contractors and the other is for data and digital information. McCann said the requests have been sent to a sample of councils, including regional councils, but not all councils. He said the requests for informa-

tion are not being processed as Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) requests, but he is aware that some councils were. We have provided this information in good faith without considering or treating these as LGOIMA. Selwyn District Council infrastructure group manager, Murray Washington, said they are providing the information in good faith without con-

sidering or treating these as LGOIMA. “Answering these requests is time consuming, but we have provided this information noting the importance of working with the DIA National Transition Unit to achieve the best possible outcome for consumers from the proposed establishment of water entities,” Washington said. Both councils are awaiting information from the DIA on what funds will be available to assist councils with resources to respond to the requests. Last month Ashburton chief executive Hamish Riach raised concerns about the impact of dealing with the NTU requests will have on the council’s business as usual. “Even if there is adequate compensation for the time we spend on that work, it’s still the same people tied up doing that work.”

If you wake up this morning feeling feral about going to work, spare a thought for these poor McIntosh Construction workers Daniel Gardiner (left) and Andrew Stephen. The sheets of building materials on the trailer had to be carried up three flights of stairs to the top of Somerset House. Not such a bad thing for a couple of fit, young-ish fellas you think? But here’s the catch – there were about 100 of them and they had to be carried up one by one ... so that means they’ve carried heavy stuff up 300 flights of stairs. Those blokes definitely deserve a DB!

OUR VIEW

When the Covid blues hit you

T

hose who are sceptical and walk among us might suggest it’s nothing more than the common flu. A bit of a headache, a snuffle and after a few days adopt the Fred Dagg theory of kick it in the guts, Trev and you’ll be right and all that. That might be the case for some and perhaps up until about 10 days ago, I never thought much of it. But after battling through more than a week of the Covid blues, I’m quite happy to put my hand on my heart and admit to being a little bit blasé about it all. I knew something wasn’t right almost straight away. That sinking feeling of what was coming intensified at the appearance of two red lines on a rapid antigen test where up until then there had only ever been one. And it went downhill from there.

Matt Markham I can honestly say I can’t remember ever being as sick as what I was for those first three or four days. I had meningitis when I was a teenager, that was hell. Reflecting now as I slowly emerge from the murk, I’ll confidently state I was at least as sick this past week as I was back then. But I shouldn’t have been right? I’m told – in fact we’re told, it’s a bit of a bug and it’ll knock you around for few days and then you’ll be fine. Well, if that’s only knocking me around, I’d rather face off with Mike Tyson for 12 rounds.

Because, even now, almost 10 days after first showing symptoms, I’m still a bit of a shadow of my self prior to the experience.

read on social media as being gospel and run with it like a child chasing the ice cream truck down the straight.

I’d rather face off with Mike Tyson for 12 rounds. Because, even now, almost 10 days after first showing symptoms, I’m still a bit of a shadow of my self prior to the experience.

I feel better, and a little more progress is made each day. But it’s really knocked me for six and after reading of other people’s experiences, and seeing people virtually untouched despite being positive, it’s been an eye-opening week and a bit. Misinformation in this day and age is rife. We take something we

Carefree, ignorant of what’s going on around us and without fear of any consequence. That’s all while the truth is that large amount of what we ingest from other people’s opinions and views are actually going to be irrelevant to us as individuals. The internet is the biggest tool in the conspiracy theory of it all.

It’s online, so it must be true. With Covid, the misinformation has become solar-powered, everyone’s an expert and everyone knows what’s best for everyone else. Mid Canterbury seems to be going through another wee surge of cases at the moment, the long tail of the Omicron variant is still kicking strong. So, let’s not beat around the bush here. It’s different for everyone. Some people will be able to carry on with their normal lives, albeit from the confines of a seven-day isolation, while others – and here’s where I fit in – will be rendered useless for a while. Just don’t take it for granted that you’ll be one or the other if you haven’t had it already. It seems there really is no rhyme nor reason to which version you get handed.

Ashburton Guardian Thursday, May 19, 2022

The second coming of Beaudie F or almost two decades, everyone told the Blues to find a world class first-five as the primary means to revive their failing franchise. They finally lured one in Beauden Barrett and look at them now: top of the table, seven points clear, playing free-flowing rugby that is enticing the legion of lost fans back to Eden Park. It would be dismissive to the point of insulting the tenacity and vision of the back office to attribute the current golden period to Barrett’s presence alone, but the work behind the scenes would not have revived the Blues by itself. There needed to be a general in the playing midst: a once-in-a-generation talent to spark belief, pull the strings and elevate the team to heights they previously thought beyond them.

And what Barrett has done this year is remind the world that he is that once-in-a-generation talent: a ridiculously gifted ball player and athlete who looks like he might be about to take his game to a higher level than 2016 and 2017. Back in his first purple period, Barrett’s game was built exclusively on his running threat. Steve Hansen used to joke that they would spend all week building a gameplan only for Barrett to orchestrate something entirely unplanned and off script once he was in the thick of the action. That’s the player Barrett was back then – instinctive and predatory and fuelled with the confidence to back himself to run at defences. No-one knew whether Barrett had a tactical kicking game or traditional game management skills, because he

Rugby have hinted that a new era may be soon upon us. The clock could be rolled back and we may be witnessing the second coming of Barrett whose old magic has been visible again. He’s rediscovered that ability to assess in a microsecond where a defensive line may be weak and whatever the All Blacks may be thinking about in regard to their tactical approach to 2022, maybe they don’t need to do much more than get the ball into Barrett’s hands and leave it at that. Such a simple brief has worked before and it can work again. The Blues are proving that. Their rugby is not loose or wild, but it does appear to be largely instinctive. Arguably such freedom would be dangerous in the hands of any other No 10, but Barrett, as he’s reminding everyone, is not any other No 10.

The All Blacks that year were averaging 43 points a game – and that was against South Africa, Australia, Wales and France. What we saw was a play-maker who believed in the impossible – rugby without restraint or pre-conception and it was no wonder the rest of the world decided to give up creating any kind of attack game and instead focus exclusively on building defensive walls. The global backlash to Barrett’s brilliance was severe. By 2019, every team bar New Zealand and Japan turned up at the World Cup with precisely no desire to play with the ball. The international game was largely dominated by coaches whose only thought was to stop players like Barrett having any room or any time to do anything. But the last few weeks of Super

Beauden Barrett

never needed to use them. Instead, he just ran and ran and defences split and fell apart in decidedly short order, seemingly incapable of closing him down even though they appeared to know where he was going. Not even the free-spirited Barry John or Mark Ella had the same propensity to rely so exclusively on their speed, agility and vision.

14 CLUB NEWS Altrusa Club

At our usual monthly meeting we discussed our upcoming Changeover Dinner to be held on Wednesday May 18th. We delivered 325 Meals on Wheels in our allocated four days. There were 38 clients at our six-weekly Foot Clinic, where the Queen’s Birthday was celebrated with a cake, made by Nola. The Clinic contributes to the Club’s finances, to ultimately distribute to the community, and offers clients and Altrusa helpers achieve a happy, successful physical and social environment. We congratulated Maureen Bishop, who has been honoured with the International Altrusa Lamplighter Award for her years of service. Our Fabric Bazaar has been rescheduled to the end of March 2023. This information is on our Altrusa Facebook, and contributions can still be amassed. This meeting was followed by the Annual Meeting, with Committee reports already circulated. Outgoing President Denise presented the 48th Annual Report for the Ashburton Club. The incoming Board was acknowledged, with Kathleen Bowman the incoming President.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club

Our May meeting was held at the Hotel Ashburton. Our March and April meetings were cancelled due to Covid. Attendance was lower than usual due to Covid concerns. Janette explained the bus trip that Allan is organising to Oamaru and North Otago in late September. It will be a fund raiser for the Cancer Society. The cost is expected to be about $30 pp. Contact Alan on 0272286290 for more information. A quiz filled the mini speaker slot. Our main speaker, Glenn Vallender, described the establishment and history of Christchurch Magnetic Observatory in the Botanic Gardens. Built in 1898 with one of the earliest seismographs, it marks the beginnings of geophysics in NZ. In 1901 the magnetic observation equipment was installed. This was when Britain ruled the waves; the observatory was important for accurately calibrating ship’s compasses. It was the “GPS” of the day. The observatory was used by both Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic teams to make magnetic surveys in preparation for their expeditions. There was a cluster of buildings on the site but the introduction of electricity and electric trams to Chch in 1913 affected the instrumentation and the equipment was shifted first to Amberly and later to Eyrewell where GNS Science still runs a magnetic observatory. Today only one building remains. It is a small museum with a permanent exhibition on the scientific history of the site. Meetings second Tuesday of month, 9.30 am. Visitors welcome. Ashburton Golf Club

Well, the rain held off last Saturday and all the Watson Cup and Newton Trophy quarter-finals were played. A couple of strong wins and a couple of shocks, see a great semi-final line up for this week. David Fisher and George Brown downed top seeds Bruce and Perry on the last hole, they now face another tough game against Steve Mc and Stephen Lee, should be a cracker. On the other side of the draw Chris Lovelock and Greg Fleming were given a hell of a fright by Terry Molloy, who had to play on his own and almost brought it home. Chris and Greg now play Team Rolls Royce, who are just purring along nicely. Two great semi-finals in store. In the Newton trophy Ivan Blain and Old Muzza dispatched Kevin Smith and they now play Dylan and Jordy, who were not in a giving mood against poor Darren. Covid has certainly left its mark on this year’s games so far, with quite a few pairs being rocked and having to forfeit or play as a single, but the show must go on. The other side of the draw sees Captain Tom and young Ben take on Pat and Paddy, who had to go 23 holes to get over Terry and Spud. Good luck to all semi-finalists. Top player of the par round was Brendon Davidson. I know, everyone else was shocked as well! Best pick-up went to Blair Snowball, who did put his dollar in the kitty, grabbed himself two 2s and snaffled over $300. Top effort. Pennants on Sunday; the Redpath boys got smoked by a 3-man Timaru team at Waimate. The only winner was Davo, who was playing the fourth Timaru player that didn’t turn up. Word was that it was still a struggle, but he snuck it on the last. Both Holmes teams had two very strong wins over at Tinwald and now sit first and second in the table. I don’t have the Alex score to hand at the moment, but I’m sure Shane’s boys will have smashed whoever they were playing. Finally in the Patterson, Dylan’s pups came agonisingly close to toppling Point at home, but they still sit in the top three of the table. Keep going boys. The old dogs however are going backwards faster than the French army. There were rumblings in the clubhouse afterwards and mutiny is certainly on the radar. I think captain Paddy has got to pull something out of left field to save himself, and the team’s season. It might even come down to dropping himself! Whoa, can’t see that happening, he is more likely to clone himself and play all six positions. Have fun, see you around the club. Good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Petanque

Several of our members travelled to Timaru on Saturday to compete in the South Canterbury Doubles achieving great success. Trophy winners were Lani and Adelys Taraunu, with

Neville and Karen Bensdorp finished third at the South Canterbury Petanque Doubles on the weekend.

Jackie Girvan was guest speaker for the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club this month. Karen and Neville Bensdorp third. Plate winners were Mavis Thompson and Linda Millard, with Francie Osborn and Nicky Foden 3rd. Congratulations to you all. It is a bit quieter on the petanque front over May and June but our next event is at the end of the month when we hold our Club Drawn Doubles. The new Committees met together on Thursday and with discussion around youth participation we are looking forward to welcoming younger people into the club. Adelys’ coaching continues to be welcomed and enjoyed by our members, with many adapting to new ways of play. Our club continues to grow with 60 members now on our books. Some people play 2-3 times a week, others turn up once a month. Remember you are most welcome to join us any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday at 1pm, at 115 Racecourse Road. Equipment and tuition are available.

Creative Fibre

The May meeting of Ashburton Creative Fibre was held on Monday May 16 in the Plains Museum meeting room, tea and coffee being served prior to the start of meeting at 10am. A good attendance included May, now recovered, and Kate from South Canterbury. President, Lynette Crone welcomed all and accepted apologies and this was followed by the business part of the meeting. The treasurer’s report showed a good working balance with sale of the recipe book “Food to Dye For” with members’ recipes from Staveley Camps selling well. There are still a few copies available. Other reports included the Craft Library, a valuable resource of frequently replenished fibre craft ideas. Our Almoner, Val Knight read out a thank-you card. Covid is certainly making its presence felt in the district, one member spoke on the importance of being ready and what to have in one’s house. Margaret Williamson spoke on the Emergency Helicopter Services who would appreciate gifts of hats/ beanies for their stocks, to put on patients’ heads as flights can get too cold for them. Contributions can be given to Margaret to pass on. A very busy Dartmoor dyeing camp was held in brilliant weather at Staveley on Monday April 11. Border Leicester fibre was kindly donated by Beath Charles, the fibre being weighed and divided into batches and dyes mixed to save time on the day. Samples of this work were shown on the Show and Tell table. Our knee rug project for the Cancer society has been a resounding success, Fenn Leadley loading 58 of these in her car for delivery. A Weaving School at Ashford’s is set for May 21, starting at 10am.

Our “home” craft get-together is to be held at Pam Whiteford’s at 56 Harland Street, Tinwald on Monday May 30. The Mid Winter Christmas Dinner is to be held on the Monday 25th July at the Hotel Ashburton. Names are being taken for this. Contact Sue, Lynette or Pam for inclusion on the list. Craft Cluster is on Monday June 6 (Queens Birthday Weekend) and July 4 at the Plains. There will be three members going up to New Plymouth on July 14-17 for the Creative Fibre Education Event, which looks set to be very interesting. Pam with her usual touch of humour read out the words on her birthday card: “How Old are you.” Our “Show and Tell” session, convened by Ann contained a variety of knitted garments and articles, the knee rugs a mass of colour and worked in many styles such as Old Boston crocheted squares, Air cell knit, and several in “our favourite crochet” stitch. A homespun child’s jumper, an adults fair isle adult’s jumper, sox with printed pattern, a cushion which got third prize at a Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association Conference Dyed skeins of Dartmoor dyeing and knitted hats, some embroidery and a large green frog resembling Kermit. A huge array of items from “crafty” members. May Greenslade extended a vote of thanks for the effort put into the knee rug project. The sales table was well loaded and supported. The meeting closed at 10.50am, being followed by a close look at the huge array of created items and a time to catch-up with each other.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club

President Julie opened the May meeting held recently. After the National Anthem was sung birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. There was a sales table, it proved to be very busy. The Mini Speaker was Marion, who spoke about a holiday in the Marlborough Sounds. She went on the Havelock Mail Boat and then stayed in a bach. This had a great view but had to chase the deer from around the place, they even smashed the fence. Two possums were caught. They went to a Lodge for lunch, and on a Cougar Cruise. Motuara Island with the bird sanctuary and Punga Cove were visited. After morning tea, the guest speaker was Jackie Girvan who told of Haven Housing’s new low-income elderly housing project next to Mona Square. This is due to commence very soon. There will be 17 units, but Covid has made it complicated. The biggest cost will be the rates. They received the site in 2020 but had to demolish the eight old buildings there. The need for low budget housing is on the rise with more people getting to retirement age, not having owned a home, or moving to fixed income and having less money to spend on a home. The Ashburton District Council will lease the land to the trust for 50 years. Cameron Courts was also purchased, and units built there. Val thanked Jackie for her talk. The Thought for the Month “Here’s an equation a simple sum, add lovely, kind and patient and the answer is a MUM”. If you wish to visit our friendly group please phone either Julie 3084254 or Rae 3088927, we would love to meet you. Next meeting is 10am on 8 June 2022 at the Hotel Ashburton.

Netherby Women’s Institute

Members of Netherby WI met at Armadillos Restaurant for the May meeting. We all enjoyed a lunch commemorating Mother’s Day from the day before. President Patsy Huggins welcomed us to the first meeting after being in recess for March and April. The general business and correspondence was attended to. Our delegate to the 101st AGM Denise Clark, was able to get our feeling on the remits. Several birthdays had already been for the year and one received a special card for a major birthday. Patsy reminded members of a Garage Sale to help cover costs for our Delegate. This is to be held on Saturday May 28 at 1A Creek Road and all donations for this will be gratefully received. Our next meeting will be held on Monday June 13 at St. David’s Church Hall with the “The Cakelady” to be our speaker.

Sam brings up No. 600, thanks to Willy and Web Matt Markham Leading reinswoman Sam Ottley took another step towards becoming New Zealand’s most successful female harness racing driver at Addington on Tuesday, and a little horse from Ashburton helped her get to another major milestone. Ottley brought up win number 600 of her driving career aboard the Willy Lake-trained Webs Reactor at the low-key Tuesday meeting, continuing her incredible career in the sulky. There were a few nervous moments, with the little gelding by Auckland Reactor having to stave off a late challenge on the line, but Ottley said the thrill of getting to 600 was worth the nervous wait for the judge’s call. “I sort of have to pinch myself a bit,” she said. “600 is a lot of winners, so it’s a great thrill to be able to get there.” Ottley, who picked up win 601 later in the day with Kowhai Shadow, is chasing down New Zealand’s all-time most successful horsewomen, Nicky Chilcott, who has 665 driving wins next to her name.

M6

This season alone Ottley has driven 26 winners, so there’s a strong possibility that come December she could be close to overtaking the North Island harness legend. While the win was more about her achieving a milestone, Ottley was full of praise for Lake, who has been supremely patient with his charge and is now getting good rewards. After showing promise early in his career, the now seven-yearold took close to 40 starts to get his maiden win on the board, but he’s now won twice, both times with Ottley in the bike, and placed on a further four occasions. “He’s just getting better and better all the time,” she said. “He’s got into the right races but he had to tough it out there today, but kept fighting for me all the way to the line.” Webs Reactor is one of two horses Lake trains from his Fairton base, where up until recently he mixed being a hobby-trainer and owning the Rakaia Fish and Chip shop, which he has just sold. “Two’s more than enough horses for me,” he said. In 25 years of training, Lake has won nine races as a trainer – always with a small team at home, with previous winners coming from Hayton Gold who won four, and Midfrew Tarpediem who Webs Reactor and Sam Ottley return to scale at Addington on Tuesday to claim Sam’s 600th career driving win. picked up three from his barn. Top guns to battle it out Celtic:

Played: 3 Won: 3 Goals For: 136 Goals Against: 49 Goal Differential: 87

Rebecca Cochrane

Matt Markham Strap yourselves in, this one could be fun. Mid Canterbury Netball’s Premier competition takes an exciting twist tonight at the EA Networks Centre, as the two leading sides in Premier 1, Celtic and Hampstead, clash for the first time this season as round one draws near to a close. The match, which will likely determine who takes bragging rights into the second stage of the season, promises to be a classic between two sides in good form who have also swept all before them to this point. Both sides have been in sublime form over the opening month of the season, but it’s perhaps Celtic who will carry the favouritism tag into the match against the defending champions. They looked good through the first two rounds, but stepped it up several notches last week against a good United side to wipe them off the court and make a serious statement. Calling on their years of experience across the court, the Celtic team this year looks sharp, focused and determined, and will be out to really put a rubber stamp on their intentions tonight in the middle game of the evening’s play. Hampstead can never be underestimated though. There are new faces among the mix this season, sure – but that same

clinical Hampstead that’s been on show for the past few seasons is still there, and if given a chance will be ready and willing to maintain their spot as the competition’s top side. Around the main event of the night, United will be out to bounce back from their defeat last week when they take on Southern in the first game of the evening. Southern have a draw next to their name from the opening three rounds, and will be keen to try and ensure they don’t face potential relegation down to Premier 2 in a few weeks. It’s the same situation for Ashburton College A. They take on Methven tonight in a similarly fragile position to Southern, needing a win to lift themselves off the bottom of the standings. Methven picked up their first win of the season last week and will be keen to continue to build on that in the late game. Down in Premier 2, Mt Somers can assure themselves of top spot with victory this week over Hampstead B, while Ashburton College B faces a tough game against Celtic as they search for their first win of the season. Methven B and newcomers Allenton will battle it out in the middle round as teams jostle for positions behind the low-flying Mt Somers. In Premier 3, Rakaia will be out to continue their unbeaten return to Premier netball in another top of the table clash with Ashburton College 10A, with Methven Shearmac squaring off against Hampstead U18 and United B taking on Methven Humm in the other match.

Hammers’ battle lines drawn for Heartland Matt Markham The Mid Canterbury Heartland rugby side will play four games at the Ashburton Showgrounds during this year’s Heartland Championship. The official draw for this season’s competition, which begins on Saturday, August 20, was released by NZ Rugby yesterday morning, with Mid Canterbury set to kick off their campaign against Buller at Victoria Square in Westport. They’ll play their first home game of the year the following week against East Coast with following matches on home ground against West Coast, King Country and defending Meads Cup champions, South Canterbury. As well as Buller, Mid Canterbury will also hit the road to play North Otago in Oamaru, Horowhenua Kapiti in Levin and then in the final round will head to the famed Cooks Garden to take on old foe, Whanganui. The season will pose some interesting

Hammers’ Heartland schedule 2022 Sat, Aug 20 – v Westport, at Victoria Square, Westport. teams, South Canterbury and Whanganui will leave a strong need for early wins on the board to start the season. An interesting side note of this year’s competition surrounds South Canterbury, who will take their matches out into the region for the season due to work being done at their home base, Timaru’s Alpine Energy Stadium. Last season’s winners will play home matches in Temuka, Fairlie, Waimate and Geraldine. While forced upon them, South Canterbury Rugby has drawn strong praise for returning the most elite form of regional rugby back to its roots and out into the community. North Otago are also taking a game out to the regions with their clash against Mid Canterbury to be played at the Kurow Domain.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll get so much more done because you’re doing it for the right reasons. Curiosity and wonder are motivators with seemingly endless fuel. They give and give. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20 Your own self-interest is part of what motivates you to act today, but it’s only one consideration of the many vying for your attention. You’ll carefully weigh out options to determine your next move. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): A smack to the ego can be more devastating than a physical hit, and ego wounds can be as debilitating as bodily injuries. The difference is that destruction to the ego makes a person much stronger. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll say the thing you wanted to hear. You’ll give the help you wish someone would have given to you. You’ll provide the very thing you most needed. It’s good to be you. Capable! LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): A signal is coming from far off, barely audible, but annoying... like a drippy faucet. The question on repeat: “Can I? Can I? Can I?” Yes, you can. You can, and you will. Go down and shut off this doubt. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It’s OK not to understand everything right away. In fact, it’s better this way. The information assimilates in its own time, when it has relevance to you and when you’re ready to do something about it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You don’t have to know what the conflict is to know that one exists. It’s not always worth getting into. One way to erase tension from your life is to use your feet to walk away. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Loosen your grip on the controls and give yourself a wide berth, too, because the most interesting things are going to happen quite on their own and in the margins. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’re performing well despite mixed feelings about the venues and institutions, and the few bad habits helping you cope. Maybe you owe your good performance to this mixed bag of influences. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Everyone is the star of their own show, though with some, you wouldn’t know it. They seem to take a seat in the audience to watch it play out. Not a bad tactic to try out today. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Get some distance between you and the problem. When you return, the solution will follow you. “Home” is not a problem, but creating a temporary distance will also bring a favourable outcome. It’s just time. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Today’s outcome is a small bird, precariously perched, listening to the wind for answers. It could fall one way or the other. It could start building a nest where it is. It could fly to the heavens. You are the wind.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate purchases Ashburton-based property management and marketing company Real Estate New Zealand PGG Wrightson Real Estate has acquired Ashburton-based Real Estate New Zealand. Calvin Leen, Mid-South Canterbury and North Otago Sales Manager for PGG Wrightson Real Estate said the purchase gives the company a compelling proposition in Mid-Canterbury’s property management market, as well as strengthening its presence in residential and lifestyle property. “We have been looking to purchase an established Mid Canterbury business that will immediately complement PGG Wrightson’s existing rural business. Real Estate New Zealand is an ideal fit, and an excellent opportunity to progress our growth and development in Ashburton, as well as Rakaia, Methven and surrounding areas. This purchase enables us to introduce property management services to the region’s townships and rural localities, which is a significant growth opportunity, particularly for our dairy farm clients, many of whom have multiple homes located on-farm providing staff accommodation that will benefit from this service.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate is a national brand, and one of the best recognised and most respected in provincial New Zealand. Their systems, processes and nationwide network will further strengthen the customer focus that Real Estate New Zealand is based on,” said Trevor. Trevor Hurley will continue to lead the team as PGG Wrightson Real Estate Ashburton office manager, operating out of Real Estate New Zealand’s existing premises at 191 Burnett Street.

“Real Estate New Zealand’s residential property management service is one of the largest in Mid Canterbury, employing three property managers. This operates alongside its residential sales business, currently serviced by a team of three salespeople. “Led by current owner and co-founder Trevor Hurley, who has 30 years of successful sales experience, Real Estate New Zealand is a long-standing boutique-based property business. It complements our existing rural business, which is growing strong market share in Mid and South Canterbury,” said Calvin. Trevor Hurley started his real estate career in 1992.
