Hundreds line up for Bookarama opening Maddison Gourlay Over a hundred people kept tradition alive for the Rotary Club of Ashburton Bookarama opening. The annual Rotary fundraiser started yesterday at the Tancred Street Sports Hall and just like previous years, the morning the doors opened there was a large queue of people waiting to get their hands on books. “It is a great turnout, we had a good 100
lined up waiting to get in,” Rotary Club of Ashburton president David Mead said. “People are pleased it’s going ahead, as there are a lot of events that aren’t going ahead and I think people are happy for this to still be going.” Covid rules were adhered to for the retail event, as members of the public wore masks and signed in, but there wasn’t a restriction on numbers. Mead said that so far everyone is happily adhering to the rules. The event usually attracts people from outside the district, and Mead said that some of yesterday’s attendees were from Christchurch and Timaru. Bookarama will be at the Tancred Street Sports Hall every day until Saturday, October 23.

Leadership stoush at the MSA Daryl Holden Disgruntled Ashburton and MSA club members hope to force a dramatic leadership change they believe is needed to save the iconic organisation. That leadership battle would come to a head at a special general meeting on November 1 where a vote of no confidence would be raised to replace the incumbent club committee. Angry club members, who the Guardian agreed not to name because they feared they would be kicked out if they went public, said the meeting would be one of the most pivotal in the history of the Ashburton Club and Mutual
School of Arts, which was first established as a gentleman’s club. It had about 3800 members, a bottle store and a new restaurant. “The club has been in existence since 1885 and it’s a big part of the community,’’ one disenchanted club member said. “We just don’t want to see it closed and it could be closed by Christmas because of financial concerns.’’ A notice of the special general meeting further spelt out the seriousness of the situation. “The undersigned have no confidence in the committee of the Ashburton Club and MSA, due to recent management or mismanagement of the club’s affairs,’’ it said. “If the vote of no confidence is passed by the membership, the incumbent committee would be dissolved. “An interim committee of three
to four persons be elected from the meeting to govern the Ashburton Club & MSA until new elections can be called for under the club’s constitution.” To call a special general meeting, at least 75 club members’ signatures had to be gathered in a petition. It easily met that figure, attracting about 180. A special general meeting would usually be chaired by the president, but because Gary Fransen was one of the subjects of the vote of no confidence, as was vice-president Neil Stuthridge, the club had put forward respected Hastings barrister Mark von Dadelszen to be the independent meeting chairman. That would also need to be voted on. For both resolutions to be passed, they required affirmative votes from at least two-thirds of financial club members present at the meeting, and there had to be
at least 50 in attendance. Fransen said, financially, the club was still trading, but it needed members to support it more. Fransen said the club also had a long-standing tax clarification issue to work through with the Inland Revenue Department, but that went back years and had nothing to do with the existing committee. He confirmed a $2 million mortgage had to be paid off. The mortgage covered the club’s significant extension and development work, which included the building of the Noble 600 restaurant that opened in June. Another unnamed club insider told the Guardian that the restaurant had been a disaster because it “was losing money every time it opened its doors’’. Fransen disputed that. “It has had its good days and its bad days,’’ he said.
“Some people like it. Some people don’t. But that’s the way it goes anywhere, I suppose.’’ The restaurant certainly got off to a difficult start, with club members unhappy at the steep prices and its finer dining focus. But Fransen said they had dropped food and beverage prices and adjusted the menu. Members could also claim 10 per cent discount and loyalty points when they dined there. Fransen said the committee had also commissioned an independent report into the club’s dealings, which he hoped would provide further insight for all members. And he expected members to pack out the Ashburton Trust Event Centre for the special general meeting showdown, with a capacity crowd of 500 possible. “I would say so. “It’s probably the talk of the town.’’

Super Saturday surge in Mid Canterbury SUPER SATURDAY
Adam Burns More than half of the Ashburton District’s eligible population are now fully vaccinated. After having one of the more lowly vaccination rates in the country, Mid Cantabrians came to the party on Super Saturday. A total of 1893 vaccination jabs were administered in the Ashburton District, one of the best performing territories in the country at the weekend, according to health officials. The district also experienced a 4.8 per cent increase of people receiving a second dose on Saturday, the biggest increase for any area in the entire country. Rangitata MP Jo Luxton described it as an outstanding effort. “We know that high vaccine uptake is how we will get back to doing all of the things we love, especially with summer around the corner,” she said. Latest Ministry of Health figures suggest the Ashburton District has climbed four spots after being pegged as the third worst performing area of New Zealand before the weekend. The Canterbury District Heath Board (DHB) said feedback
According to the Ministry of Health: First dose increase of 577 (2.1%) - Third best territorial authority in NZ Second dose increase of 1316 (4.8%) - Best territorial authority in NZ Combined dose increase of 1893 (6.9%) - Second best territorial authority in NZ from the public had been “overwhelmingly positive”, with those attending Saturday’s events appreciating the festival-like atmosphere of the day. “The kai and activities provided by vaccination teams seemed to be a big hit, with many commenting on their fun experiences at clinics,” DHB senior responsible officer for the Covid-19 response Dr Helen Skinner said. Figures provided yesterday by the DHB confirmed more than 79 per cent of the Ashburton District’s 27,500 eligible population have received at least one dose. More than 53 per cent had now received both jabs. Clinics in both Methven and Rakaia got through hundreds of doses with more than a combined 600 jabs administered. Medical Centre Methven provided a total of 336 doses,
including 120 non-booked appointments. Dr Cheryl Tallon said it was a fantastic response out west. “We’re really pleased, we’ve got a well-oiled machine when it comes to doing our vaccines because we manage our own,” she said. “I think it’s just a bit more accessible for people not to have an appointment as well. “We’re happy our community have gotten involved to protect each other and themselves.”

Ice rink project pushed to 2023 Staveley Ice Rink Refrigeration
Jonathan Leask The Staveley Ice Rink is over a third of the way towards its fundraising target, but has pushed back plans for its redevelopment project. The Staveley Hall Society which owns the ice rink launched a campaign in June to raise funds for the redevelopment that would guarantee it could operate for at least three months a year by installing a refrigerated concrete pad. After almost three months they have raised $422,600 towards the target of $1.12 million. “In the last two weeks we have raised nearly $100,000,” project spokeswoman Claire Harden said. “There has been some pretty amazing donations, including GDC coming on board and offer to pay for the power install, and some really large donations from private families.” The innovative project involves laying a concrete slab in the base of the existing rink, which would
Staveley ice skating rink has been open since 1951 on a man-made, naturally freezing pond. The plan, launched in June, is to add a refrigerated base to the rink with the Staveley Hall Society aiming to raise raising $1.12m and complete construction to open in 2023. include refrigeration to guarantee it had sufficient ice to open every year. Initially they planned to have it all ready to roll by June next year, but Harden said they have pushed the planned opening back until 2023. “Giving the project 18 months is much more realistic. “We just don’t have the time to get everything sorted in time for next winter.”
The added time allows for them to secure the funding, finalise the details and work out tenders with contractors she said. To fund the project, they are looking at a combination of existing cash, grants, naming right partnerships, corporate and private donations and crown funding to financially back the project. One option is ‘purchasing’ one of the 70 loads of concrete the
project will require for the rinks base, with 41 already purchased. The Givealittle page is almost at $12,000 from just over 100 donations. Harden said they have put in an application to the next round of funding grants from the Mid and South Canterbury Trust for $150,000, which comes out in December, and are working on a Lotto grant for $250,000 in February. The neighbouring Mt Somers
Walkway Society is also in the process of securing funding for its track redevelopment and Harden said they has been some collaboration to avoid doubling up on funding sources. Once completed, the future proofing project will provide a viable winter tourism operation, alongside the nearby Mt Hutt Ski Area and soon to open Opuke Hot Pools in Methven, Harden said.
Sports tourneys windfall for Ashburton economy Adam Burns

The hosting of two sports tournaments in consecutive weeks in Ashburton has brought welcome relief for the local economy. The scrapping of gathering size limits under Level 2 guidelines meant Ashburton was able to host a makeshift junior basketball tournament last week. The 32-team event attracted about 1000 people to the district which had local accommodation providers all booked up. Event organisers believe about $350,000 was pumped into the Ashburton economy. Nearly 170 people from around the South Island are also competing in a lawn bowls tour-
nament in the town this week. Previously under Alert Level 2, theatres and event centres could only hold events of up to 100 people with one metre social distancing between seated patrons. The new rules announced earlier this month have no cap on attendance as long as patrons are seated and socially distanced. Ashburton’s Taylor’s Motel cohost Kay Rogers said they were full last week and this week, largely due to the two sports tournaments. “For the weekend trade that we’re losing because of Covid, it’s quite nice that these events have been able to go ahead,” she said. With South Island events facing significant uncertainty as restrictions receive clarification by the Government, Rogers said it was a great relief that both events were not canned.
“It would have been a major loss,” she said. “We are struggling, it’s not like we’ve recovered. “If these events didn’t go ahead it would have had a big impact.” She said about two-thirds of visitors who stayed at the hotel last week were involved with the basketball tournament. Half of this week’s guests were linked with the bowls event. Bella Vista accommodation co-host Michelle Clyne said the resumption of events was a significant morale booster following a rocky winter. “The last eight days, oh my gosh, I’m running and I’m tired,” she said.

Ashburton College takes initiative; starts development Malcolm Hopwood The new Ashburton College may be delayed yet again, but the school is doing what it can to kick-start the development. Principal Ross Preece has been told of further delays to announce the blueprint for the “new college” but he’s progressing with what has already been approved. The masterplan for the $60 million development was due at the start of the year and then promised for the school’s midyear reunion, but Preece understands it could be early in 2022 before final confirmation is made. The problem is money. “The cost has risen beyond $60 million and, until we know if extra funding is available, we can’t confirm the masterplan,” Preece said. “Increased building costs and an understanding of needs generated by roll growth will require further funding.” However, he’s been assured the Ministry of Education won’t walk away from the new school. At worst, Ashburton College
Ashburton College principal Ross Preece surveys the development of Phoenix Preschool. will get a $60 million development, at best it will get the additional funding required. In the meantime, work has begun on a new Phoenix Preschool where the college netball courts previously were. The preschool is a stand-alone early childcare facility, but also provides for children of Ashburton College staff.
Work, which began in August, is scheduled for completion at the start of next year when the children and equipment will be relocated from the old site. Once the building is demolished, work will then begin on developing block 1, comprising 32 learning spaces on a site which formerly housed the swimming pool, the horticultur-
al block, and Phoenix Preschool. In addition, changing rooms attached to the two gymnasiums will also be demolished and rebuilt to the latest requirements. “Finalised plans have yet to be seen,” Preece said. The changing rooms will be bulldozed over Christmas with new changing rooms built in the new year.

A completion date is scheduled by the end of term one. Preece is now doubtful the new school will be signed off by 2025. “The ministry has a reputation for thorough planning and building, but not for speed. “We accept this and are patient so we’re going ahead with what we can accomplish,” he said.

Pawsome day on Mt Hutt It’s usually bluebird days that draw the crowds, but Mt Hutt went to the dogs on Saturday. The fourth running of the Meadow Fresh Dog Derby had skiers take to the slopes with their dogs in tow. Owners completed the dog handling course while traversing the mountain with around 50 dogs tackling the course. All the entry fees were donated to the SPCA. Mt Hutt Ski Area sales and marketing co-ordinator, Richie Owen, said Mt Hutt was enjoying some superb spring conditions and patrons were looking to make the most of the extended season, with a big weekend ahead – weather permitting – before the mountain is set to close on Monday. New sewer pipeline ahead of schedule Jonathan Leask Contractors say that 70 per cent of the new Ashburton Relief Sewer (ARS) pipeline has been laid and the work is ahead of schedule. Despite delays for Covid-19 lockdowns and the floods in May causing high groundwater levels on Milton Road south affecting the pipe-laying, the contractors are on target to be finished by the end of March next year.
The Seipp Construction team is laying one section of pipeline, from the Ashburton River along Milton Road south to Wakanui Road. The intersection of Milton Road south and Beach Road, which was closed while the pipe was laid across Beach Road, has now reopened to traffic. Milton Road south from the river to Beach Road remains closed to traffic, except for residents. The section between Beach Road and Wakanui Road is on target to open before Christmas, however, the river end will not be reinstated until the end of February.
Contractors have reported encountering high groundwater levels along Milton Road south and are having to use sheet piling to screen water from work sites. At the other end of the project, Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) has been laying the section of pipeline along Wakanui Road (from the Milton Road intersection) and Albert Street, and north across land near the Geoff Geering subdivision to Mill Creek. The pipe will then follow alongside Mill Creek to Bridge Street. The work along Wakanui Road and Albert Street is now complete and the roads have been reinstated.

Industry leaders encourage Covid-19 vaccinations Mid Canterbury dairy farmers Dinuka and Nadeeka Gamage believe vaccination against Covid-19 is vital to help protect their family, staff, and business. The 2021 Canterbury/North Otago Share Farmers of the Year contract milk 980 cows for Dairy Holdings at Ealing where they employ three full-time staff. “Getting vaccinated is important, especially for rural communities,” Dinuka Gamage said. The vaccine is part of our plan to shield our business from the virus. “All five of us, and our 15-year-old son, have had the first dose of the vaccine. We’re booked in to have our second dose this month.” The Gamages are from Sri Lanka and their staff come from India and Argentina. Until the borders reopen, they remain cut off from their whanau. “We’re like many people working in New Zealand’s primary sector, we haven’t seen our families overseas for a long time,” Gamage said. “The more people we can get fully vaccinated, the sooner borders will hopefully reopen to allow travel and help ease workforce issues.” It’s a sentiment echoed by Federated Farmers, with the industry organisation encouraging all farmers to support their staff to get vaccinated. “I know farmers have been flat tack with calving and lambing, and now mating is starting on dairy farms. But there’s nothing more important than the health of your family, your staff and their families,” Federated Farmers’ employment spokesman Chris Lewis said. “If your nearest urban centre has a walkin vaccination centre, or a GP clinic is willing to take a short-notice booking, you might even send in a staff member with a few dollars to pick up a morning or afternoon tea shout for the rest of the team.” Lockdowns and limits on gathering sizes have forced the cancellation of events such as field days, discussion groups, sporting fixtures and A&P shows. “We all need social connections. PHOTO SUPPLIED New Zealand we often work on our own or within small teams, more so now with current staff shortages, so social and networking opportunities are a lifeline for our mental health and wellbeing,” Rural Women New Zealand president Gill Naylor said. “High vaccination rates are one of the tools that will enable restrictions to be eased.” The primary sector’s largest employers have been part of workplace pilots to make it easier for workers to be vaccinated. Dairy co-operative Fonterra employs more than 12,000 people across its New Zealand manufacturing sites, distribution centres, offices and Farm Source stores.
“We’ve administered more than 7500 vaccines to our employees,” Fonterra’s director of global quality and safety Greg McCollough said earlier this month. “Vaccinations were available on-site at most of our workplaces. Where there were too few employees at any one office or
site, those people were given time to go to workplaces where the vaccination clinics were happening. “We made it as easy as possible for people who work on our sites to have vaccinations.” The dairy co-op’s vaccination drive is part of sector-wide efforts to prevent disruptions during the busy spring period, when milk production peaks. “Keeping milk collection and processing going is crucial for our farmers, the welfare of animals and to continue getting milk on the table for New Zealanders,” McCollough said. The meat processing industry is New Zealand’s largest manufacturing sector and directly employs more than 25,000 people. As summer looms on the horizon, it’s vital the sector’s processing capacity isn’t affected by positive cases of Covid-19. Some processors have offered on-site vaccinations. In September, Alliance Group’s Smithfield plant in Timaru hosted night clinics, in partnership with Arowhenua Whanau Services (AWS), as part of its ongoing drive to provide easy access to Covid-19 vaccinations for staff. The plant’s vaccination support programme began in June when it hosted a trial clinic for South Canterbury District Health Board (DHB). High vaccination rates will enable horticulture businesses to operate efficiently again and source workers to harvest crops. “We’re approaching the busy summer season where our workforce doubles to harvest strawberries and seasonal vegetables. High vaccination rates will ensure people can move freely to where they are needed to pick crops,” Vegetables NZ general manager Antony Heywood said.

Sunflowers provide a brighter cropping option Growing sunflowers to produce higholeic cooking oil could provide additional income for New Zealand growers as a rotational crop during the summer period, new research has found. The Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) has concluded a three-year project looking at crop options to raise profitability and provide alternative land uses. The project received $90,000 through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI’s) Sustainable Farming Fund (now superseded by the Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund). High-oleic varieties of sunflowers were identified as a promising crop. “Our research shows we have the conditions in New Zealand for successful sunflower crops, with yield potential in excess of 4.5 tonnes per hectare,” FAR’s general manager business operations Ivan Lawrie said. “What’s more, consumer demand is strong for high-oleic sunflower oil, which is a top-quality oil with a higher smoke point than regular sunflower oil, and many sought-after health attributes, including low saturated fat content and high monounsaturated fat.” The project has focused on sunflower agronomy over the past two years, working with Rolleston-based Pure Oil NZ, which provides grower contracts and extracts the oil from the seed. The researchers were especially interested in determining how growers can produce a profitable crop in sufficient quantities to meet demand. They trialled two lines of hybrid seeds from France. “We’ve established that growers need at least 60,000 plants per hectare to have a successful crop,” Lawrie said. “Growers need reasonably big paddocks to contend with bird damage because unfortunately birds are especially keen on the sunflowers. “The project has looked at some of the optical and sonic devices currently available to deter birds, and further work is required in this area.” Sunflowers have the advantage of growing at a time of year when there is limited competition from other crops. The plants also require minimal chemicals or fertilisers to grow. “The cost per hectare to grow the crop is reasonably low, and once the plants are established, they’re pretty much self-sufficient until they’re ripe and ready to harvest. “In addition, as a deep-rooting plant, sunflowers provide good soil aeration and soil conditioning for the next crop in the rotation. Sunflowers have proven to
Sunflowers are being successfully grown in Canterbury to produce top-quality cooking oil. “Once you’ve crushed the seed and extracted the oil, the remains are also very good as animal feed products for both the equine and general feed markets.” Lawrie said proximity to processing plants was key. “Our trials have mostly been conducted in Mid and North Canterbury because the oil crushing plant is nearby. But we’re increasingly getting calls from growers in other regions, including the North Island, who are keen to give it a go. However, they’d need to factor in the cost of freight Foundation for Arable Research’s general man- to get their sunflowers processed.” The high-oleic sunflower oil produced ager business operations Ivan Lawrie says conso far by the more than 20 growers insumer demand is strong. volved in the project is used by snack be a good predecessor crop for wheat, for manufacturers to make high quality poexample.” tato chips. MPI’s director of investment programmes Steve Penno said the project has produced valuable information for New Zealand growers who might be interested in adding a new crop to their growing rotation. “One of the aims of our Fit for a Better World vision is to create new high value products. With low inputs and easy-care growing needs, sunflowers could be an ideal spring option to complement the oilseed rape currently grown in South Canterbury. “The more options our growers have to fill the gaps during off-peak growing seasons, the better off they will be,” Penno said.

Shipping log jam a major headache for exporters Global consumer demand and pricing for New Zealand’s red meat exports is strong, with getting product to market the biggest challenge amid container shortages, disrupted shipping schedules and port congestion. “The issue all year has not been about our ability to sell, it has been one of shipping,” Alliance Group chief executive David Surveyor said. Silver Fern Farms co-chair Rob Hewett: “Demand off-shore is strong for New Zealand’s high quality grass-fed red meat – the challenge is getting it there.” Both Alliance and SFF took their traditional spring roadshows online to outline prospects for the season and the scale of disruption caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic. Alliance chairman Murray Taggart said that in terms of international logistics, it had been a year of unprecedented disruption. Over the course of the year, one million too many refrigerated containers were stuck in China, while in the southern hemisphere New Zealand, Australia and South America were short one million containers. “With trade flows from south to north this is an issue for exporters like Alliance.” Alliance can load out 550 containers in a good week, but the shortage of containers meant there had been plenty of weeks when this was down to 200 to 220 containers. “So, that has a meaningful impact,” Taggart said. Ships were also skipping ports to keep to their timetable, compounding the problem. The issue was expected to remain for the next 12 to 18 months. Surveyor said supply chains had been greatly disrupted throughout the year. “We have customers seeking product which we have sold, but

cannot load and ship at the rate we would like.” As a result, the farmer co-operative had held more inventory and cashflows had been affected, lifting debt levels. At peak processing, Alliance had almost run out of coldstore space, both internally and externally. “At worst, this could have impacted on processing, but this was managed, negating the impact on farmers.” Taggart said that with sheep and beef cattle numbers declining, mainly because of a swing to forestry and carbon farming, the gap between sheep numbers and processing capacity was getting bigger every year. This was driving intense procurement competition at the farmgate. Alliance general manager of livestock and shareholder services Danny Hailes said that red meat pricing was better than at

into China for lamb was firm, with potential for a slight correction. Chinese demand continues to underpin mutton pricing.
Foodservice in Europe, the United Kingdom and North America was slowly reopening but remained under pressure. The venison service sector had been hit hard by the pandemic. The chilled spring game season was under way with logistical challenges likely to require a higher dependence on airfreight which would add to costs. Market fundamentals remained challenging for venison as global food service recovers and Alliance was exploring new opportunities in the retail sector, Hailes said. SFF chief executive Simon Limmer said about 20 per cent of sailings were running on schedule, compared with 90 per cent 18 months ago before Covid-19. “So, there is a significant shift in reliability in terms of having containers available, having ships sail on time and getting them off-loaded.” SFF had had to change its production plans to adapt, which meant leaving value on the table, which was frustrating, Limmer said. Supply chain costs were likely to increase by up to 50 per cent this season. “So there is a significant increase in the cost of sailing combined with uncertainty around when product will reach its destination.” SFF general manager supply chain Dan Boulton said customers were still prepared to pay for higher-value products, even during Covid-19. In terms of the livestock pricing outlook through to Christmas, lamb was expected to be in the range of $9.40 to $8/kg. “This is a bigger range than normal, reflecting extra uncertainty around possible returns when additional volumes come onstream from the new season’s lamb crop.”

Super Saturday a winner, but . . . S
uper Saturday done and dusted. So how did we fare? Mid Canterbury, that is. Well, it depends how you look at it and how you interpret the numbers because, as we know, they can be spun several ways to paint the kind of picture you want. The kind of picture that makes it look good. So, back to Super Saturday, and Mid Cantabrians certainly came to the jabbing party. A tick under 1900 vaccination jabs were administered in the Ashburton District on Saturday, making it one of the best performing territories in the country at the weekend, so said health officials.
Daryl Holden So that certainly deserves a round of applause. Ditto for the news that the Ashburton District also experienced a 4.8 per cent increase of people receiving a second dose on Saturday. That was the biggest increase for any area in the entire country. Rangitata MP Jo Luxton described it as an outstanding effort. True.
No arguments there. But dig a bit deeper and there are still concerns with our vaccination figures. I’m not being Nigel Negative, but figures provided by the Canterbury District Health Board further reveal an underlying concern. Yes, it’s true that 79 per cent of the Ashburton’s district’s 27,500 eligible population have received at least one dose of the vaccine. And, yes, a touch over 50 per cent have now received both jabs. But what that means is that 21 per cent, or basically one in five people, have yet to receive their first jab. I don’t know about you, but
that’s still disappointing and it must be a worry. For all of us. The focus now must be on how we get the rest, or as close as we can get to all of that 21 per cent, over the vaccination line. The message is clear. Gains have been made. Some momentum has been created but one fifth of our district are still putting the rest of us at the dreaded Covid risk. That’s probably what we should all be focusing on.
And one more thing …. Had this sent in by a friend, who spotted it in an Australian paper. This sign was apparently
posted on a wall at a golf club in Sydney. Please pay attention: 1. Back straight, knees bent, feet shoulder-width apart. 2. Form a loose grip. 3. Keep your head down. 4. Avoid a quick swing. 5. Stay out of the water 6. Try not to hit anyone. 7. If you are taking too long, please let others go ahead of you. 8. Don’t stand directly in front of others. 9. Quiet please … while others are preparing to go. 10. Don’t take extra strokes. Well done. Now flush the urinal, go outside and tee off.

New member of the PC brigade
L
ast week the Rolling Stones announced they have dropped Brown Sugar, one of their biggest hits from their US Tour. It follows unease with the depictions of black women and references to slavery in the song which was number one in 1971. Keith Richards has confirmed the band’s decision, but says he’s confused by people who wanted to “bury” the track. Also last week DC Comics revealed the new Superman is coming out as bisexual. In a landmark moment in comic book history, Jonathan Kent – the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane – is coming out in the November 9 issue when he starts a romantic relationship with a male reporter. John Kent is currently known as “the Superman of Earth”. I really struggle with a lot of the ‘keep the PC Brigade happy’ decisions made these days, but in an attempt to adapt and move with the times, I thought I’d get ahead of the game and run the PC ruler over some of the children’s stories. Although these stories are loved by children worldwide, they may upset a keyboard warrior somewhere in online land and God knows we can’t have that. So, let’s start with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. OMG! I can’t believe this has managed to fly under the PC radar to date. From now this should be known as “The Caucasian Non-Binary and the Seven Vertically Challenged Individuals”. The story itself sees her ‘keeping house’ while the lads toil away in the mines. This is a shocking example of gender stereotyping.
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR Any mention of them going to work should be removed, so avoiding any pressure on our children to be contributing to society. Not until they’ve had 12 months of sleeping till lunchtime before spending the afternoon playing X Box, otherwise known as a gap year. Any reference to them singing Hi Ho Hi Ho should be erased immediately as this is clearly degrading to crack-toking prostitutes (think about it). Talking crack-toking, questions must be asked about their names and the consumption of illegal substances. Dopey and Sleepy both had one toke too many. Bashful is really just a bit paranoid. Grumpy should not mix his drugs. Sneezy has Coke issues. Happy has got the mix just right and Doc is clearly the ringleader, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was ‘prescribing’ all the drugs. Next week I’ll dig into the seedy underbelly of the following titles. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a book about binge eating and bulimia. Pinocchio, the raunchy story of a boy whose anatomy grows when he tells dirty stories. Sleeping Beauty, the story of an Instagram influencer who’s on a gap year. The Secret Garden, a how-to guide on growing pot without getting busted by the cops.
Maddy Hooper loves reading her books, but how PC are children’s books? The Cat in the Hat, a story about animal abuse when minors are left at home alone. Green Eggs and Ham, how to lose weight from food poisoning. With any luck these books will all be removed from shelves
before our children are scarred for life. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper New member of the PC brigade (Tui Billboard)

Prioritise those vaccinated against Covid-19 By Stuart McCutcheon
W
e now find ourselves trapped in a Covid Catch-22. The Government will not allow us to return to normality until we reach some (unstated) level of vaccination, yet there is no real incentive for the unvaccinated to do the right thing. And, while we are relatively safe and the economy is doing okay overall, that is cold comfort to those who are watching their businesses go under, or missing out on their education, or marooned overseas, or unable to welcome their families’ newborns or farewell those who have passed away. It’s time for a circuit breaker. The unvaccinated would appear logically to fall into three groups. First are those who, for genuine medical reasons, cannot receive the vaccine. They should of course be excused from vaccination, subject to certification from a registered medical professional. Given evidence, at least from developed countries, that the vast majority of Covid infections and deaths are occurring in the unvaccinated, they deserve a high level of protection. Then there are what I suspect is a small group of hard-core
anti-vaxxers. They are prepared to ignore the fact that vaccination has saved countless lives since Edward Jenner invented the vaccine for smallpox (now eradicated worldwide) over 200 years ago. Yet one imagines that, were they to be injured in a car accident, or suffer from cancer, or have a stroke, they would be perfectly happy to avail themselves of the benefits of hundreds of years of medical science. Third, and likely the significant majority, are those who have some low level anxiety about vac-
cination, or cannot be bothered making the effort to be vaccinated, or don’t have a sufficient sense of community responsibility to do the right thing in the interests of their fellow Kiwis. At present there is little disadvantage for them in rejecting vaccination because the rest of us are being locked down to protect them and to avoid swamping the health system. They are literally holding us hostage. Yet the fact that local vaccination rates go up in response to local outbreaks suggests that this group is open to persuasion.
Unfortunately governments, by their very nature, are disinclined to engage in the kinds of persuasion that might make them unpopular. So what might employers and organisations do to help government open the country up? First, let’s make it an immediate requirement that all our new employees be vaccinated, and – most importantly – publicise that requirement: No jab, no new job. Second, let’s explore every possible situation in which vaccination could be required of our current employees. Government has shown some leadership here with the recent announcement of mandated vaccination for health and some education workers (though curiously, in the latter group, not until January 1 next year). There will be many other employers who can make the case that their employees must be vaccinated, either on health and safety grounds or because they will not be allowed to enter the homes or businesses of those who are vaccinated. While the process of achieving this will take time – proposing changes to policies or employment agreements, consulting on them with staff and unions, making amendments based on feedback, instituting the chang-
es, consulting on alternative opportunities (if any) for those who remain unvaccinated (medical dispensation aside) – the mere fact of doing it will send very strong signals to the laggards: No jab, no job. Such an approach is not without risk, but neither is seeing yours or related businesses go under. Finally, and acknowledging that many businesses are struggling, let’s ensure that wherever possible only those who are vaccinated can enter food and drink establishments, attend events or benefit from the social activities that most of us crave – now more than ever. No jab, no jive? Imagine a New Zealand in which those who chose to remain unvaccinated, and thus to place the rest of us at risk, knew that they would be unable to travel (domestically or internationally), or to study, or to go to events or restaurants or bars, or to take up new job opportunities, or potentially to retain their current jobs. I suggest that vaccination rates would skyrocket and that we would soon all be released from what currently feels like never-ending house arrest. Ashburton victory creates quite the impression Matt Markham
Ashburton Racecourse was the venue of something quite special on the weekend when Cambridge filly There You Go held off the challenges of two outstanding three-year-olds to win the Barneswood Farm Stakes on Saturday afternoon. The Tony Pike-trained filly made it two wins from as many starts in the South Island this campaign, and pushed herself into favouritism for the Group One 1000 Guineas early next month at Riccarton. But it wasn’t easy for the daughter of Niagara, who had to handle some strong mid-race pressure during the running before fighting off class gallopers Art De Triomphe and I Wish I Win in the run to the line to win by two lengths. With the Guineas in the back of his mind, Pike – who watched the race from Cambridge, where he’s stuck due to the region’s alert levels, took the most satisfaction from the way the filly fought off adversity during the running to get the victory in the Group Three event. “Nothing really went right for her, and she still got the job done in good fashion, so I’m delighted with her,” he said. “We’ve always

Smart filly wins again
John Morrison is on borrowed time winning races with classy filly, Life’s A Beach. The Tony Barron-trained filly went backto-back at Addington on Friday night, continuing a strong start to her campaign which will see her head to Australia for the Breeders Crown. After finishing second at the Harness Jewels earlier this year, the Woodlands Stud-owned filly has won twice and placed second from three starts this campaign. She’ll head to the Joshua Dickie stable in Australia to tackle the Group One features.
Carana wins on debut
There You Go and Kozzi Asano take out the Group Three Barneswood Farm Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday. thought she was very good, as she is a beautiful, big strong filly with a massive action. “She had to step up a few classes and did it nicely and I think she will be even better when she gets back to the bigger, roomier track at Riccarton, so it is very exciting.” Pike now holds the favourite for both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas in his stable, with exciting colt Field Of Gold also based in Canterbury and set to head to Riccarton this week for the War Decree Stakes. Winning both the three-year-
old Group Ones during Cup Week at Riccarton would be something special for the champion trainer. “We’ve gone close to taking out the Group One double at Riccarton with Sacred Falls winning the 2000 Guineas and Waterford getting beaten in the 1000 Guineas by a nose. “It would be nice to pull that off, but just having competitive runners in those types of races is a big thing.” Saturday’s huge meeting on the Ashburton turf started in the right fashion with the locals getting on the board from the out-
set when Klear The Deck rocked the punters with a bold win for Amanda Higgins. The four-year-old mare ran a belter first up on the Ashburton track last month but never got warm at Riccarton in her next start. On Saturday, she came with an undeniable finish to grab the first win of her career winning by a nose under Racha Cuneen. Fellow local trainer Robyn Ayton was also in on the action, picking up a placing with the ever-consistent Commitment during the early stages of the day as well.
Noted strike-rate trainer John Hay produced yet another first-up winner at Oamaru on Sunday, when Carana was an impressive victor. The fouryear-old by Bettor’s Delight overcame a tricky barrier draw to sweep past her rivals in the straight and win comfortably. Raced by Peter Cates, the estate of his wife, Jocelyn and their two daughters Nikki Copland and Joanne Lovett, Carana was heavily supported by punters, starting favourite.
No trouble here Brent White’s golden run over the past few weeks continued on Sunday when trotter Rossco Trouble broke through for a maiden success. The locally bred three-year-old showed he wasn’t far off with a good second at the Methven meeting a week earlier, but held all rivals at bay with a bold front-running effort in the hands of Blair Orange on Sunday to win.
TENNIS
Strong start to local tennis Matt Markham Mid Canterbury’s A Grade tennis competition started with a hiss and a roar on Saturday, and it was Team Head who made the biggest noise in the opening round of the season. The well-balanced line-up took on Team Wilson to kickstart their season, and walked away with close to a clean sweep, picking up eight of the nine matches across the afternoon. The other match of the round, between Team Yonex and Team Babolat, saw Yonex in good form, winning six matches to three. Team Head took to the court with a strong top four seeds, and all four delivered in their singles matches with Tyler Leonard, Ryan Watt, Ollie Bubb and Jaden Cromie registering victories.
Leonard won the battle of the household, taking care of his father, Pete, with a 6-4, 6-4 final score. Young Riley Breen pushed Watt hard in their two sets. He dropped the first 2-6 but fought back hard in the second, losing it in a tie-break, 6-7. Isabella van Doreen proved the highlight of the Team Wilson performance, grabbing their only win in her singles match against Lachlan Adam, coming back from losing the first 5-7 to win 6-4, and then 10-3 to grab a point. In the other match of the round, Yonex were in fine form, winning four of the six singles matches and dropping just one doubles matchup. The much-anticipated top seeds singles match between Jason Feutz and Rhys Cromie didn’t eventuate, with the latter called into the Prems team for Canterbury Tennis action. Feutz picked up the win over Lee Gilbert, while Jake Parson, Pete Kirwan and Maggie Crosby also picked up singles wins.

Stags roar to second victory Matt Markham The Tech Stags have laid their intentions bare for this year’s South Canterbury Cricket Tweedy Cup, as they made it two-from-two for the season on Saturday with a comprehensive victory over Temuka. Seven days after sweeping aside fellow Mid Canterbury-based team, Allenton, the Stags returned to the Ashburton Domain on the weekend and looked set to do the same again to Temuka, as they rattled their way through the visitors’ batting line-up with consummate ease. The visitors won the toss and elected to wield the willow, a decision they would come to rue as they limped their way through to 84 before they were all out in the 23rd over. Tech’s bowlers were right on song. Richard Print had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble, taking three wickets inside the first 10 overs of the innings, while Harry Jones was doing as much damage at the other end with the ball in his hand. Jones ended his day with 4-19 from 6.4 overs, while Print was 3-8 off his five. The run chase should have been an easy one for Tech, especially given they blasted 180-odd in 16 overs the week prior against Allenton.
Allenton improvement not enough for success Despite some wayward opening bowling from Temuka, they kept the pressure on. Jason Morrison fell for 13, then Sam Clark went without scoring quickly after. When William McKee and Des Kruger found themselves back in the shed, Tech were 39-4 and in a bit of trouble, but Ryan Bell and Bevan Ravenscroft were able to guide the team home with a 38run partnership to get the win. With two-from-two, Tech are in a three-way tie at the top of the standings with Celtic and Pleasant Point, and get a chance to extend that further when they take on the winless Star this weekend in Timaru. Meanwhile, on Saturday in Timaru, Allenton weren’t able to bury the demons of their opening round defeat to Tech – but there was plenty of improvement in their loss to the classy Celtic side, who won by 52 runs. After winning the toss and electing to field, Allenton were in the box seat with one Celtic batsman back in the sheds in the third over, but Celtic flexed in reaction, with a 67-run stand and then a 126-run third wicket stand to get through to 3-200 after 35 overs. They flicked on the afterburners inside the final 15 overs and added another 100 runs to the tally to end with 302 for six from the designated 50 overs – an imposing task for the Allenton side. Satwant Singh and Kulvinder
That brought Manpreet Hakkla and Satveer Singh together in the middle though and the pair set about restoring the innings, compiling a partnership worth 116. Hakkla fell with 130 runs still needed from the final 15 overs, for 68. Satveer fell six overs later with Allenton at 5-209 needing 93 off the final eight overs, but wickets fell quickly, and the side were bowled out in the 47th over for 250. While defeated, Allenton did show that they are more than capable with the bat, and if they can extricate a little more from their bowlers, they will be more than capable of knocking over a few sides this season. Allenton get a home match this weekend with Temuka returning to Ashburton.

Virk led the bowling duties with two wickets each. In reply, the Allenton run-chase started well.
A 45-run opening wicket set a good platform, but three quick wickets put them in danger as they sat at 3-57 after 17 overs.
PETANQUE
Tough terrain for locals Matt Markham There was no major success to celebrate, but plenty of strong performances from the local contingent at the Canterbury Petanque Singles and Doubles championships over the weekend. The two-day event, which saw close to 50 players competing from across the Canterbury region on Saturday and Sunday went off without a hitch, and while no major silverware stayed in Ashburton, local players certainly made their mark on the two tournaments. A strong field of players took to the terrain on Saturday for the singles competition, with Stephane Maontal from Christchurch emerging victorious against the best in the region. Local players Chris Taylor and Richard Browne were both in on the action as well, picking up third equal in the championship event. Jonathan Crum picked up third equal in the Plate consolation as well, while Bernice Laird and Trevor Nish finished third equal in the Bowl consolation to cap some good results in the singles. Sunday saw 36 teams hit the terrain for the doubles tournament. Jan Guilford picked up the best result of the local players, combining with Christchurch’s Maryon Beer to

Browne and Neville Bensdorp combined to win the consolation, capping a solid weekend for Browne, while Peter Marriott finished third equal. Taylor kept her form up too, winning the Plate division when combining with Robbie Sihamau, while Linda Millard and Crum finished runner-up
in the Plate Consolation with Karen Crum, Joan Healy and Kate Marriott third equal in the same event. The weekend begins a busy few weeks for local players with a number of major tournaments on the horizon. Ashburton was set to host the National Championships in early November, but they have been cancelled due to Covid.

Search for new boss at MCRFU The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union is on the hunt for a new boss. After 14 years at the helm of the union, chief executive Ian Patterson has tendered his resignation and will depart in early November. Meanwhile Rugby Development Officer, Jason Ree, has also left, taking up an opportunity with R80 Rugby based in Christchurch. An advertisement for the position of chief executive has gone public over the past week, as Mid Canterbury Rugby Union begin the process of finding a new man to take the reins and lead the union through the coming years. In an email to all Mid Canterbury rugby clubs, Mid Canterbury Rugby Union board chairman Ged Rushton acknowledged the impact that Patterson had on the local rugby scene. Ian Patterson “We would like to acknowledge Ian’s dedication and significant contribution to Mid Canterbury rugby over the last 14 years,” it read. “I would like to personally thank both of them (Patterson and Ree) for their support and contribution to rugby in Mid Canterbury,” Rushton added. Patterson officially finishes up in his role on November 5, leaving little time for a replacement to be found – but as the rugby season officially winds down for the summer months with the completion of the Heartland Championship, there is ample time to get someone in place and up to speed before next year’s season preparations fully begin. “The board will be working over the coming weeks to fill these key roles, and would also like to acknowledge that Ian and Jason are both committed to working with the board to ensure a smooth transition of these positions.” Applications for the chief executive role close on Saturday, October 30.

Loss leaves Hammers precariously placed Matt Markham Now the pressure is firmly on. A second loss in the space of a fortnight has put Mid Canterbury’s chances of a shot at the Meads Cup on notice, as they drift down the points table in the tightly contested Heartland Championship. The Hammers were humbled by the unbeaten Thames Valley in Te Aroha on Saturday afternoon losing 52-35 in a match which, if not for a 15-minute period in the first half, would have been an extremely close encounter. And now, the calculators need to come out. Just to decipher whether or not there’s still a chance of competing for grass roots rugby’s greatest prize, or whether the focus is now toward aiming for a crack at the second tier Lochore Cup. The good news is that both options are still a realistic opportunity. The bad news is that for one situation it will rely on the wheels falling off a team or two ahead of them, and Mid Canterbury will need to grab bonus point wins against Poverty Bay, South Canterbury and Buller over the next three weeks. At their best, Poverty Bay and Buller should be achievable, but South Canterbury have been in a different world to everyone else this season, and getting on top of them, let alone grabbing maximum points, hasn’t looked likely for any side over the past five weeks. So, it’s time to roll the sleeves up and get to work for Mid Canterbury. First on the agenda this week will be working out what went wrong in Te Aroha on Saturday. Things started well. Down 0-6 after two penalties, a Tait Chisman try had them in front 7-6 shortly after, but a 15-minute period in which Thames Valley scored four unanswered tries effectively wiped them from the match, and they trailed 32-7. To their credit, the Hammers fought back. Tries to Callum Burrell and

Mid Canterbury’s Harvey Blyth has his work cut out as he attempts to stop of a runner during their loss to Thames Valley on Saturday. PHOTO THAMES VALLEY RUGBY then Seta Koroitamana as the Mid Canterbury forward pack continued their good work for the season put them back in the match, and they went into the break down 21-32, but very much on the go forward. The second half promised a lot, and while it didn’t fail to deliver on the entertainment front, for Mid Canterbury it was a case of missed opportunities and some scrappy defence at times which allowed Thames Valley to run amok. The Hammers grabbed tries through Koroitamana and then Lote Nasiga, but every time they looked as though they were getting on top of the match, their hosts found an answer and marched back down the field, often grabbing points. The singular point awarded for scoring four tries might end up being a saving grace for Mid Canterbury, as it keeps them within the hunt for a top six spot and a final berth, whether it be for the Meads or Lochore Cup or in the fifth and sixth playoff. They share standings with Poverty Bay, who they face this week in Ashburton, and getting back onto home ground and trying to get five competition points on the board will be paramount. Many of the teams ahead of them also have tough runs in over the final three weeks of pool play, especially Whanganui, who play South Canterbury, North Otago and Thames Valley. But Mid Canterbury will need to worry only about themselves and getting as many points out of their three matches to put themselves in contention. And a complete performance this weekend would go a long way to making that happen.

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’ll get what you want and need because you’re willing to let go of certain positions and ideas about yourself. For instance, you’re more than willing to sacrifice vanity and pride for a larger purpose. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): If you are hard on yourself, you might rise to superior standards or quit out of exhaustion. Self-directed harshness eats energy. Play the middle ground with gentle encouragement toward improvement. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Add flavour to the conversation without worrying if others will relate. You bring a multiple dimensions that will extend into other days in which new understandings will be reached. This is just the start. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The simplest answer is not always the best answer. In fact, today it’s a one-size-fits-none result. You’re safe to assume the problem is custom-made and to seek a bespoke solution. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The weakness is a strength, though it’s not activated until someone applies it to a worthy purpose. You’ve a gift for seeing the potential of qualities (in yourself or others) and putting them to good use. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’ve been listening, and you really understand the needs of others. Your calm support will be impactful. You will reassure and speak for those who haven’t quite found the right words yet. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There are certain actions you take that you do recognise for the rituals they are. Their devotional qualities are hidden to you, though today you’ll be made quite aware of the quirkier things you’ve made sacred. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You don’t have to respond to every notification, phone call or question. You are the gatekeeper. Take the first two responsibilities seriously and your domain remains your own. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Reward is intrinsic in an action or it’s not. And if you didn’t make the right move, that’s the punishment. Your job is to keep moving in acceptance that you’re learning as you go. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Should you settle for a thing that’s working pretty well or go for what you really want? You can do both. Enjoy your place while you visualise, plan and invest in your leap to the next level. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You might not be aware of how valuable your opinions are to other people. When you phrase your support well, it will stick with others in a positive way and even be a guiding light. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Well-being is for the wellrested and well-hydrated. It helps to believe it’s all going as it needs to, so dial up the volume on your senses and breathe it all in.
