Desperate times Don’t be fooled by Bob McDonald’s smile. The Ashburton Retailers’ Association chairman knows the next two months leading up to Christmas will be crucial for the survival of many local businesses that, for close to two years, have been through hell. The combination of the Covid-19 pandemic, the drawn-out CBD redevelopment and goods’ supply issues have hit harder than anyone could ever have imagined. “This READ MORE P3 period coming up is vital,’’ McDonald said.

Civic centre and library named ‘for future generations’ Adam Burns The new library and civic centre complex have received new names. The library has been named Te Pataka o ka Tuhituhi and the civic centre portion of the building will be known as Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka. The titles, gifted from Arowhenua, were revealed at this week’s Ashburton District Council meeting. Deputy mayor Liz McMillan said she was pleased with the recognition to Hine Paaka, an ode to the ancient beech tree that once stood near the Alford Forest. She added that the district needed to look to the future. “When we think about this building, it’s not just for now it’s for our future and there is a younger generation out there who are learning te reo and it rolls off their tongue a lot easier than it does mine.” “It’s definitely for our future generations.” Councillor Rodger Letham also commended the nod to Hine Paaka. “It’s probably one of the most historical Maori names of our district.” “I’m very pleased with the names.” Councillor Stuart Wilson, fresh off his iwi co-governance gripes around Three Waters, supported the motion but said he was disappointed that the names were not more concise. “We’re fairly monolingual in this district as in we don’t know a lot of te reo,” he said. “We all know Te Papa, Turanga (Christchurch Library), the Opuke

Methven hotpools, it’s so easy to educate people in this district with a short name. “I can’t see them being used with so many syllables and I think there has been a missed opportunity.” The $42 million library and civic centre building project is currently under construction with a concrete pour inside the heritage building being undertaken last week. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said that councillors had been discussing some of the internal design features, in a council update last week. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
What’s behind the names Te Pātaka o kā Tuhituhi (library) This name is based around the concept of a pātaka or a raised storehouse. Traditionally, pātaka were storehouses raised above the ground on posts, used to store preserved and dried foods (but not for crops such as kūmara), tools, implements, vessels and garments. Pātaka kai (food store houses) played an essential role in community life by ensuring that the yearly harvest could be safely stored for the harder, leaner months of the year. Often, pātaka belonging to rakatira (chiefs), were intricately carved and seen as both a prized possession and a symbol of the owner’s chiefly status. Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka (civic centre) The name Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka or The Gateway of Hine Paaka derives from the ancient mātai (beech) tree that once stood
near Alford Forest in the Ashburton district. Known as Hine Paaka, this tree was a significant landmark to Māori travelling through the district as it could be seen from a great distance away. The tree was also seen as a territory marker and as the place where the appropriate ceremonial rites to ensure safe passage should be undertaken by those entering into the lands of the local takata whenua. The importance and ‘sacred’ nature of this tree was also acknowledged by early European settlers in the region, and it was given the name Single Tree. Estimated to be anything between 300 and 1000 years old the tree finally blew over in a storm in 1945 and is now commemorated in a roadside memorial on SH72. Desperate call to save Ashburton businesses Daryl Holden
Retailers’ Association chairman Bob McDonald says many Ashburton businesses are in dire straits due to Covid and the CBD revamp and many may be forced to close in the New Year if things don’t turn around dramatically between now and Christmas. businesses. “I don’t think people realise how important local businesses are until they’re not there,’’ McDonald said. “It’s all very well saying you could go to Christchurch and get a better deal there or you could get a better deal online.
“But sooner or later, you’re going to be in the situation where you need something now. That’s the advantage of having local businesses. “When you want something, you just go and get it locally. But those local businesses have to be supported. They really do.’’
That’s why McDonald was calling on someone in the community to step up and show some leadership for those struggling shops and businesses in what was almost a use it or lose it scenario. “It’s time to pull together or risk losing what we have.’’ r staff Ou

Bob McDonald isn’t exaggerating when he says the past two years have probably been the worst trading period for many Ashburton businesses for probably 50 years. “Well, we’ve been in our business for 32 years,’’ said McDonald, the Ashburton Retailers’ Association chairman and owner of Health 2000 Ashburton. “This period has just been horrendous.’’ Lockdowns and uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and the frustration of the lengthy, almost two-year CBD redevelopment project have been key factors in keeping customers away in telling numbers. And now it was hurting the bottom line for many Ashburton businesses. That’s why McDonald said the trading period up to Christmas could be make or break for many. It was that grim, he said. “This period coming up is vital,’’ McDonald said. “There will be businesses in town now that, if they don’t have a good trading period right up until Christmas, then they simply won’t be here next year.’’ McDonald was not trying to be an alarmist. He was just telling it like it is and talking from the years of experience, having been through good times and bad. But right now, he’ll tell you, was one of the toughest times in recent history.

Fatal crash on Rakaia Bridge Maddison Gourlay

Loco marked end of an era Malcolm Hopwood Visitors to Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum in Ashburton journeyed back in time at the weekend.
The JA 1260 steam locomotive was fired up for the first time this spring/summer season. And there was a reason for its trip round the Plains circuit. Today marks the 50th anniversary since steam ended on the New Zealand railways. JA 1260 hauled the overnight carriages between Christchurch and Oamaru before another locomotive took
over and continued to Dunedin. The October 26 overnight express brought to an end, 108 years of regular steam rail operations in New Zealand which started in Christchurch in 1863. The dieselisation of North Island railways was completed by the late 1960s, but steam power continued in the South Island because carriages on the
Friday and Sunday night expresses between Christchurch and Dunedin needed steam heating during winter. The JA 1260 has recently received its fresh boiler ticket (WOF) and many people at Plains over the long weekend saw it in action, some recalling their own journey on the South Island main line when steam was king.
One person has died after a crash on the Rakaia River Bridge. Emergency services were called to a collision involving a motorcycle and truck at 9.45am yesterday. “A truck and motorbike collided on the Rakaia River Bridge at 9.45am and sadly the driver of the motorbike has died,” A police spokeswoman said. The Serious Crash Unit were called in to examine the crash site. Detours were put in place and the State Highway was closed between Main Rakaia Road and Elizabeth Avenue. Traffic was diverted inland through Rakaia Gorge. The bridge was finally reopened around mid afternoon. The motorcyclist’s death comes after seven people died in the first two days of the long weekend. The eighth road death puts this year’s holiday road toll, as it stands, in line with last year’s death toll over the Labour Day weekend when eight people were killed. The Labour Day weekend holiday road toll period started at 4pm on Friday and ended at 6am this morning.

Filling the gaps in the ag sector A Mid Canterbury training facility is continuing to address the gaps in the market for young people looking for career opportunities in the agricultural sector. Agri Training is offering the Primary Trade Certificate Programme at its Winchmore training facility. The full-time 40-week programme has been designed to meet the needs of young people who are not looking for degree qualifications, but who are looking for career opportunities and managerial pathways while providing an NZQA Level 3 Certificate. “As we have seen, Covid-19 has negatively affected all types of industries however, the world needs food production and New Zealand farming is leading the way in innovation and growth,”Agri Training business development manager Bryn Price said. “It’s no longer a one-man band. The agricultural industry is a massive multi-million dollar industry that requires all levels of skilled work and professionalism. “There are managerial roles available in the agricultural sector that often have fast pathways to six-figure salaries.” The programme begins with entry-level core subjects providing a foundation before advancing into elective programmes, depending on students’ areas of interest. “It can take people years working on farm to gain the knowledge to support the practical work they are doing. “We’ve designed the course so students can understand the ‘why’ not just the ‘how-to’. “We teach analysis and business decision making along-
Agri Training is busy trying to meet the rampant ag sector demand for skilled, knowledgeable workers. side practical learnings,” Price said. New Zealand Dairy Careers project manager Trina Moore works with both industry leaders and Government agencies and sees a huge demand for a skilled workforce. “ We need people who have both
the skills and knowledge to move into management roles fairly swiftly. “We’ve got the work, now we need trained people.” Agri Training will work with graduates to introduce them to an employer who will foster continued learning, and with good terms
and conditions she said. They will then provide a further six months of pastoral care to help with the transition into the industry. It is a free programme covered under the government fee free scheme for 2022 and upon completion, provides a New Zea-
land Certificate in Agriculture NZ 3869 and the Agri Training Primary Trade Certificate. The course is open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents aged between 17 to 24 years of age with a commitment to embark on a career in the agriculture sector.

Reforms piled on more pressure, report says Heather Chalmers New freshwater reforms introduced by government last year and described as unworkable by farmers have had an increasingly adverse impact on farmers and their families, according to a report commissioned by the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust. “Farmers were already struggling to cope with the pressures they were experiencing. Participants described multiple events, such as (cattle disease) mycoplasma bovis, banking reforms, Covid-19, and drought, as causing stress to farmers,” said the report’s author Rachael Inch. “The new rules and regulations then compounded the existing pressures, adding even more anxiety and tension to farmers.” The trust commissioned research to explore the social impact of the freshwater rules and regulations on the Ashburton District. As water is a vital resource underpinning the socio-economic development of the Ashburton District, it was essential to understand the impacts of the rules and regulations on the people of the district, the trust said. A report commissioned by the Ashburton District Council on the economic impact of freshwater reforms, released in December, 2020, showed the flow-on effect for the district’s economy was likely to be dire. A conservative estimate indicated that, collectively, farm profitability across the district will decline $57.9 million (or 83 per cent) per year, while farm expenditure will also decline by $139.9m (or 23 per cent). Since the reforms were introduced, a backlash from farmers, including the huge Groundswell protest in July when thousands of tractors and other farm vehicles were driven to more than 50 towns, has resulted in the government proposing to drop the most unworkable aspects of its intensive winter grazing regulations and delay their introduction. As part of the trust’s report a wide range of individuals and groups including farmers, rural professionals, rural contractors, irrigation scheme representatives and a spokesperson for Hakatere Marae were invited to share their ideas and experiences. The field work was completed between April and May this year.
According to the research, the initial engagement process for the freshwater rules, specifically the consultation seminar held in Ashburton, created anxiety, stress, and uncertainty for the agri-sector. The consultation seminar did not provide attendees a clear pathway; or a reassurance that there had been a thorough investigation into different farming systems’ impact. Attendees also felt there was insufficient acknowledgment for the positive progress completed by farmers in the district under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy. There was little clarity about what the changes meant or how to implement the changes. The lack of clarity created confusion, distrust, and uncertainty. Uncertainty has increased as time progressed, Inch said. As the uncertainty filtered out to the Ashburton community, it impacted both farmers and agri-professionals. One of the critical impacts for agri-professionals was the increasing stress and tension when interacting with farmers. The uncertainty hindered their ability to plan, provide practical advice, and progress forward with projects. Simultaneously, banks and lending organisations were taking a more conservative stance with farm lending, restricting the ability of some farmers to access capital and stalling progress. In the absence of clarity, banks and agri-professionals took a more conservative approach to advising farmers, often referring farmers back to Environment Canterbury (ECan). However, ECan could not provide certainty around the required targets and limits or whether the CWMS
still stood, resulting in more confusion and tension for farmers, Inch said. The research also explored the impact of the new rules and regulations on farm businesses. Some farms would need to reduce production, limit diversification options, and increase capital and compliance maintenance and costs. In some cases, particularly in the Hekeao/Hinds area, participants felt the rules and regulations could mean losing many farming operations in the area. The findings suggested that the rules and regulations could mean an early exit from farming
for some farmers. The investment required to meet the current rules and regulations and the increased compliance and capital investment needed to change farm systems could exceed the capability of some farms. Some participants felt that there could be an impact on land value. One of the concerns for young farmers was the way that the public viewed them. While many farmers use social media, the younger farmers reported having greater exposure to the negative public views on social media. Many young farmers felt that public view was so negative that it had begun to impact how they felt about themselves and what they do. The research also explored the impact on the broader community. The findings suggested that the flow-on impact from a loss of farms and reduced spending in the district could affect the viability of some rural supply businesses increasing unemployment. The Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust provides free and confidential support to rural people living in the Ashburton District. The trust will continue collaborating with key community stakeholders to provide support, tools, and resources to improve rural well-being and resilience in the district as farmers continue improving water quality on farm.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): A person with a good attitude sees a mixed-bag opportunity and thinks of making the most of it. Your attitude is stellar. You absolutely know you’ll crush the coal into a diamond. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Looking past people’s limitations, searching for their beauty, seeing it, pointing it out... these are some of the ways you make others happy. So much of that happiness will splash back onto you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The work of love isn’t a doing/acting/fixing job today. The work of love is a listening gig, an “entering in the spirit of another” practice, a task that encompasses receiving and relaxing. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): What you’re hearing will mentally trigger a story about the time it happened to you, but you won’t tell that story. Instead, you’ll give your support generously without flipping focus your way. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You like to know what others are doing, but even more interesting to you is why they are doing it. You’re not content with the first reasons that surface. Your fascination kicks in with the deeper ones. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You would like it if people would understand what’s important to you, but when they don’t, you simply show them again, no fuss. People often need multiple examples to internalise knowledge. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): As the second air sign of the zodiac, you have intimate knowledge of the wonders arriving on the wind. Psychic breezes will kick up today, not to blow you off course but strong enough to gently rock you. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Setting things straight works wonderfully for a library shelf. As for the biological and emotional world, circles and wiggliness are the norm. There’s nothing sillier than trying to set wiggly things straight! SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The silence between two people is as unique as the sound of their shared language. As you listen to a quiet punctuated by words, you’ll hear clearly the heart’s intention. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): What do you want? You’ve been choosing for the good of others, but if you’re not happy too, no one will be happy. Make yourself smile first, and then watch the other faces alight. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Integrity is power. Loyalty, honour, stoicism, duty – all the qualities of a heroic drama will also apply to your role and the current scene of which you are the hero. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Even great beauty isn’t recognised by all. Some see. Many miss. You have the sort of thoughtful, intelligent eye that can and will see many kinds of beauty, even when it’s enshrouded in ordinariness.

Time to wake up. Covid coming
W
akey-wakey South Island. It’s your friend Delta Variant here and I’ve come to say hello – and just when you hoped you wouldn’t be hearing from me anytime soon. I’m parking up in sunny Blenheim before I check out the rest of the South Island. Not sure when that’ll happen but, rest assured, you’re all on my holiday schedule. And that’s all of you in Te Waipounamu. So please get ready because I’m coming and I might stay for a while. Okay . . . so I’m having a bit of tongue in my gob fun about an issue that is anything but humorous. Because news on Saturday that the South Island had recorded its first community case of Covid-19 since last year, and just when we were all trying to enjoy a holiday weekend,
Daryl Holden would have made many hearts sink. Yes, we all knew the virus was coming. But hearing that a man had flown from Rotorua to Blenheim, sought a test upon arrival after developing a sore throat and then was confirmed as a positive case was the ultimate wake-up call for the South Island. Our golden Covid-free run over, as easy as that. Not surprisingly, confirmation of the case has resulted in calls for tougher measures to be introduced to limit inter-island spread of Covid-19, which is not
a new line from those of us in the South Island. We’ve been almost pleading for that for months. Let’s hope the powers-thatbe start listening and seriously consider introducing a stronger containment policy to prevent the virus becoming established in the mainland following the Blenheim blunder.
so in Ashburton, whose performance in that area has been, well, shoddy to say the least. And perhaps the Blenheim case has also vindicated the Government’s decision not to put the South Island at Alert Level 1 because the virus moves and spreads at speed. It is near impossible to contain, which is
can’t stop the virus getting in, but “ We limiting movement between the islands
would at least buy us more time to get the vaccination numbers up in the south.
Yes, we know we can’t stop the virus getting in, but limiting movement between the islands would at least buy us more time to get the vaccination numbers up in the south. That’s especially
why there have been deep concerns about the surge in cases in Auckland and Waikato in the past week. More than 50 people have been hospitalised, including five
in intensive care units. It seriously makes you wonder if we’re ready for a serious Covid outbreak. Well, not so, according to the Nurses’ Organisation, who’ve warned the country was “dangerously unprepared” for a potential tsunami of Covid community cases. Alarmingly, it said there were about 3500 nursing vacancies nationally across the health sector and training for nurses to pick up intensive care duties had been woefully inadequate. That makes for distressing reading, so what can we do in the South Island? How can we play our prevention part? Easy. Take the shot. Get the vaccine jab. Encourage others to do the same. The South Island has had its Covid-19 wake-up call. Rest assured, there won’t be another.

Binge-watching . . . it’s all good
A
s I have mentioned before in these columns, Manda and I are big fans of binge-watching TV series. I’m not suggesting that we sit down for hours on end watching them as some people do. Our nearly five-year-old would never allow us to do that! Covid has put the brakes on most new TV shows in the past year or so, and we have been scratching to find a show that we both like the look of. Two-and-a-half episodes ago I suggested to Manda we should probably give The Crown a nudge, even though I feared it
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR may be a touch girly for my taste. I figured it can’t have won all the awards it has without being quality. I’m really glad we did, even if it’s not 100 per cent factually accurate, it’s a good watch and insightful. We now need to make it spin out until the 21st of January next
year. That’s the date announced this week for the much-anticipated final season of the Netflix hit show Ozark. Seven episodes will premiere then, and the second seven-episode half of the season will follow later in the year. It’s a violent at times drama about a run-of-the-mill financial advisor who gets mixed up with the drugs cartel. Jason Bateman is brilliant in it, but the star of the show for me is Julia Garner, who is superb in her portrayal of Ruth Langmore, for which she has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Bring on January 21! While I’m on a TV series theme, here’s an investment opportunity that looks like it would return good results in a short period. The Toronto mansion from the show Schitt’s Creek is up for sale again, but this time, it’s listed for almost $7 million dollars more. The mansion is featured in the comedy as the residence the Rose family lives in before it’s revealed they’ve lost their fortune and must start afresh. In February, the home, in Toronto’s St Andrew Windfield’s
neighbourhood, was listed for just under $15 million. Now? $21.9 million. By strange coincidence I just looked up my bank balance and Schitt’s Creek flashed up on the screen. It didn’t stop Fox, his arm in a sling, directing a superb afternoon of big band jazz. The programme ranged from Woody Herman/Count Basie standards to two tracks from their upcoming Dave Dobbyn album. Slice of Heaven, with its powerful brass orchestration, gave a fresh insight into the classic. Stellar blues singer, Erna Ferry, sang a trio of numbers, none better than the Rolling Stones’ Honky Tonk Women. The late Charlie Watts would be delighted. Pianist, Michael Houstoun, at home with Mozart and Mendelssohn, was equally at ease with Vannelli. Speed unleashed Matt Markham The big guns came out to play at Ashburton yesterday, and they left scorch marks on the Ashburton Racecourse. In near-perfect conditions for fast racing, the day didn’t disappoint. From three-year-old Franco Indie smashing the clock in the Sires’ Stakes heat to Muscle Mountain in the Flying Sprint and Self Assured in the Ashburton Flying Stakes – it was hell-for-leather all day. It was the latter who gave the biggest heart palpitations though. At $1.30, Self Assured found an easy lead, and stacked his rivals up in the Flying Stakes, before cutting out what could potentially be the fastest last 800 metres recorded at Ashburton of 53.2. With such an easy lead, many would have expected him to win comfortably, but the evergreen Classie Brigade at least levelled with him, if not put his nose in front, 100 metres short of the post. “He had to fight to win that,” Mark Purdon said after the race. “But it wasn’t completely his

fault, he wears a piece of gear on the inside and it meant he couldn’t see the other horse coming, so when he did finally see him he knuckled down again.” Classie Brigade was excellent in second, while Pembrook Playboy gained no luck up the lane late to finish third, with Gerard O’Reilly and Laver fighting resolutely for fourth. Earlier, Muscle Mountain showed he’s right on track to try and topple Sundees Son in the feature trotting events over Cup Week, sitting parked in a
New Zealand record time to win the Flying Sprint. “He loves sitting out there, he relaxes beautifully and then when you ask him to dig in he does,” driver, Ben Hope said. The Greg and Nina Hopetrained runner led home a strong field with Majestic Man, who set the tempo in front, finishing second ahead of Midnight Dash and Oscar Bonavena. Muscle Mountain will now head to next week’s rescheduled Kaikoura meeting at Addington, in order to get behind
the standing start tapes ahead of the Dominion Handicap. Yesterday’s meeting wasn’t without early drama. The closure of the Rakaia River bridge during the middle of the morning after a crash meant a number of horses, trainers, drivers and owners were unable to get on course in time – even after the meeting was pushed back. The log-jam of vehicles in the Rakaia Gorge left many stranded idle, with late scratchings and driver changes during the early stages of the meeting.
Green light for Methven race track The Methven Racecourse has been cleared for action this week, almost two months after it was rendered unusable following damage caused in high winds. Harness Racing New Zealand officials and Methven Trotting Club representatives met late last week and then again on Saturday morning to discuss the state of the track, with a view to this week’s twilight meeting, which is set to be held on Friday afternoon. On Saturday morning 50 horses stepped out on the track for workouts courtesy of the Mt Hutt Trotting Club, and reports from drivers who were in action was really positive, with Harness Racing New Zealand’s John Denton giving the green light to go ahead after the last heat had been run. High winds in September pushed a large amount of topsoil from a nearby paddock and the majority of the inside crusher dust track onto the home bend. The club was forced to shift its first meeting of the season to Ashburton and then it’s annual Methven Cup Day to Orari earlier this month. This week’s meeting is a low-key twilight affair, with the first race set down for 2.30pm, with a short-course programme on offer with all races to be held over either 1700 metres or 1609 metres. It will act as a strong precursor to the club’s other big day of the year, Green Mile Day, which is held in early December. Fields for Friday’s meeting are expected out later today, with strong nominations predicted across the card.
Big race success for local jockey Matt Markham Ashburton hoop Jason Laking showed he’s still got the magic touch in big races, with a Group Three success at Riccarton on Saturday afternoon. The talented rider, who is closing in on 400 career riding wins, partnered the Jamie Richards-trained Noverre to success in the $90,000 War Decree Stakes on the weekend, claiming his 11th Group or Listed success in the saddle for his career. And now, there’s a strong possibility that he’ll get a chance to add to that even further in the

coming weeks, with some major racing on the schedule including Group One features during Cup Week. It was the first major race success for Laking in over a decade, and his first since returning to the saddle after he came out of retirement in 2014 to return to race day riding, and justified the many hours, he spends trekking up to Christchurch to ride trackwork in the mornings before returning to Ashburton to work during the day. And his ride on Noverre on Saturday was one out of the box. Slow away from the 1600 metre start, Laking was left with a wall of horses in front of him around the final bend, but played the patient game and waited to unleash when the gaps finally came, with Noverre sprinting brilliantly to run down hot favourite, Field Of Gold in the final stages of the race. And the effort drew praise from the horse’s champion trainer, Richards. “Jason let things unfold, and I was really impressed with the way that he weaved between runners and ran the mile really strongly. “He was quite brilliant winning as he did.” The result saw Noverre shift to a $5 favourite for the Group One 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on the first day of the New Zealand Cup carnival on November 6, and the big question now is whether Laking will retain the ride.

Nothing has been publicly confirmed as of yet – but Richards did perhaps give an insight into the fact that the Mid Canterbury jockey is a strong contender to stay in the saddle in his post-race comments. “Jason knows the horse well, what he’s capable of, riding track work and giving us a hand. “I’m thrilled we’ve been able to repay him with a stakes winner, and we can all look forward to the
2000 Guineas,” Richards said. Traditionally, Canterbury riders have been used for many of the big lead up races by Te Akau, but they’ve had to step aside during Cup Week for the heavy-hitters from the North Island to take their place. However, Covid restrictions, which have a number of jockeys in the Auckland region unable to travel south, could see more opportunities for the local jockeys
to be allowed to stick with the ship, including Laking on some of the Te Akau runners. Cup Week at Riccarton will bring back many fond memories for Laking, who won the Group One 1000 Guineas in 2002. He was forced to miss last year’s meeting when looking set to have some exciting rides after a nasty fall on his home track of Ashburton put him on the sideline for close to six months.

Golden point thriller Matt Markham In almost any other circumstances, Mid Canterbury’s golden point victory over Poverty Bay on Saturday afternoon would go down as one of the great matches of the Heartland Championship. Yet for some reason, when Tom Reekie sent the ball flying through the posts, claiming victory at the Ashburton Showgrounds, you could almost sense the disappointment. From the players on the paddock to the supporters in the stand there was a real feeling of what might, and perhaps should, have been. A 22-19 win, without a bonus point was not the ultimate goal from the match for the Hammers. It was a match they needed to make a statement in. Yet, as has become a little too familiar in recent weeks, they lacked the killer instinct, and countless opportunities to put the nail in the coffin and round out the match went begging, along with a crucial five competition points from the match. But a win is a win, and the chance of at least a Lochore Cup home final is still in the offing – albeit potentially needing a result out of a clash with the unbeaten South Canterbury this weekend. A mountainous task if ever there was one. “Four competition points is a lot better than two competition points or none at all,” Dale Palmer said. “It’s put a bit of pressure on us, especially with South Canterbury this week, but we just have to take it and move on and hope for a much more consistent performance in Timaru.” Things started well for the home side. A Raitube Vasuraktua break down the flank saw Manasa Bari latch onto an offload and score in the corner within the first five minutes, but almost instantly Poverty Bay struck back with one of their own. The rest of the first half was flooded with errors, poor set piece – especially lineout time – from both sides and only a barge over try from a forward-drive to JJ Manning extended the lead for the Hammers, who went to the break up 12-5. The second half started like the first. After two minutes, Seta Koroitamana, the Heartland Championship’s leading try scorer, was

But almost instantaneously, Mid Canterbury went back into their shell, and nothing seemed to go right. Poverty Bay scored their second to bring the match to 19-12 and with time almost up on the clock, Mid Canterbury were in control and hot on attack. Chasing a bonus point try, they pushed hard and gained a lineout five metres out from the Poverty Bay line. The set-up was good, Osea Baisagale went within a whisker of scoring, but the ball was turned over and Poverty Bay marched 99 metres up the field and scored, with the conversion successful to bring the scores level. “We let them back into it and we shouldn’t have allowed that to happen, but I do have to give credit to Poverty Bay; they were plucky, they kept coming at us and are clearly a very good side.” The level scores meant golden
point time, and Mid Canterbury wasted no time in getting on the forward march before securing a penalty within five metres of the try line. Confusion ensued as they tried to work out whether or not the bonus point would still be awarded if they crossed over in extra time, but a final call was made to put the game to bed and Reekie stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty to get the win. “No-one really knew what the state of play was there I don’t think, but we made the right decision to get the win on the board and not risk it going the other way on us.”

So, a scrappy victory – but a victory all the same, and while there’s been some inconsistency in the overall play the efforts of a number of players each week hasn’t wavered. Manasa Bari was again immense, even taking on a stint at wing for the last quarter of the match. Nick Foxley ran hard and tackled well, and Michael Hennings had a strong match in the No.7 jersey. But, without wanting to sound like a broken record from all of the previous weeks of the competition, again it was Mid Canterbury’s scrum which laid the platform and created the oppor-

Adam Williamson, Callum Burrell and Carisbrook Tooimalatai have been sublime, and they asserted their dominance on the Poverty Bay pack quickly. Where it went awry, though, was a failure to capitalise on that domination at scrum time. Even defensive scrums on their own line were being turned into attacking weapons, but building momentum from that huge shift – there was a lot that was left wanting. That weaponry will be huge this weekend against South Canterbury, and the main focus for the rest of the week will be ensuring that the good foundation that the forwards are providing at scrum time is turned into positive results in every other corner of the paddock too. Because with our friends from down the road, there will be no second chances.

Stags go three from three Matt Markham The Tech Stags remain ahead of the pack in South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup after three rounds following a strong win on the weekend, while Allenton are still on the hunt for their first success. The Stags made their first foray into foreign territory for the season on Saturday when travelling to Timaru, but came home victors with a 166-run victory over Star at the Celtic Sports Ground. Allenton, however, were unable to run down a modest target set by Temuka, losing by 17 runs. In Ashburton, Allenton captain Karmjeet Singh won the toss and elected to bowl first on his home wicket and his bowlers stepped up to the mark. Temuka were forced to toil away, helped by a 115-run stand for the second wicket, as they made it through to 176 all out in the 49th over. Satwant Singh was the pick of the bowlers as he took 4-14 from his seven overs, including claiming a royal duck in the first ball of the innings, clean bowling one of the Temuka batsmen. Hasdeep Singh claimed two wickets from his seven overs as Allenton showed they are capa-
Missed opportunity leaves Allenton winless ble of getting the job done with the ball. With 176 to chase, Allenton walked out to the middle to bat feeling confident, and a 47-run opening stand laid the perfect platform. But the loss of the first wicket triggered a top order collapse of sorts, as Allenton struggled their way through to 90-6 midway through their innings. The introduction of Satveer Singh to the crease almost changed the game though. Now the competition’s leading run-scorer, he got to work, scoring runs quickly at one end, all while watching his comrades at the other end fall like flies around him. He eventually became the last wicket to fall in the 42nd over, having scored 50, but with his side still 17 runs short of success. In Timaru, the Stags won the toss against the winless Star, and put their batsmen out in the middle. Their top four all made strong contributions including Ryan Bell’s 54 and Sam Clark’s 69 – that pair adding an 86-run third wicket partnership to really set up for a big total. When they fell though, the Tech effort faltered as well. Richard Print bashed his way to a quick 28, but he was the
His 10 overs saw just 27 runs scored as he troubled the Star batsmen constantly. Alex Hooper, who opened the bowling, was also in good form, collecting three wickets from his almost seven overs as the Stags rolled Star for 119 within 33 overs to get maximum points from the match. The win sets up a mouth-watering clash next weekend in Ashburton with the competition’s other unbeaten side Pleasant Point, while Allenton get their best chance of success when they play the also winless Star team in Timaru.

Victorious week on the greens They came from far and wide, but it was four ladies from the Papanui Club in Christchurch who walked away major winners of last week’s Clubs NZ South Island Women’s Fours tournament. More than 160 players from across the South Island spent the week in Mid Canterbury playing from Monday through to Friday before Bev Morel, Jan Shirley, Theresa Woodham and Tania Woodham (pictured above with Ashburton MSA’s, John Argyle) won the final on Friday afternoon. They defeated Julie Dalley, Liz Rossiter, Kay Wallace and Sonia Butley from Hornby 2514 in the final on the Ashburton Bowling Club green. The competitive event, which is held annually was a huge coup for Mid Canterbury, not just in the bowling
sense but also for local accommodation and restaurants who have struggled over the past 18 months due to Covid restrictions. The tournament was able to go ahead with the use of four separate venues which kept numbers down during each day and allowed players to respect social distancing while out on the greens. The local teams entered in the competition largely had a tough time of it with Lorrel Chaney’s Rakaia side making it through to the Plate semi-finals the best of the results from local teams. There was some local success however, with Wendy Blackwell, Rose Johnston, Lynda Osborne and Donalda Watson winning the final of the consolation event which was held at Hampstead. PHOTO WENDY SUTTIE
