Migrant exodus felt here Adam Burns

The departure of migrant workers thwarted by visa frustations offshore is adding sting to Mid Canterbury’s depleted rural sector. Growing uncertainty amid stalled immigration settings for migrant workers was forcing New Zealand resident hopefuls to keep their options open with Australia’s agricultural sector dangling the carrot. Ashburton immigration advisor Maria Jimenez said that several Filipino workers had joined the worker exodus to Australia and many more had signalled an interest. “There’s no pathway to residency,” she said. “In Australia it’s very competitive, they’re wanting to give permanent residency in two years.” Jimenez has organised a parliamentary petition, urging the government reintroduce the South Island contribution work visa which allowed migrants to apply for residency after five years. The petition had garnered more than 800 signatures. Last year, the Government suspended expressions of interest selections for the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) due to the impacts of Covid-19 on Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) processing offices. Border restrictions had also made the situation awkward for migrants wanting to be reunitied with their families. “A lot of them haven’t seen their family for about two years,” Jimenez said. “And that’s for those who have had their visa approved, their families can’t even come in.” Federated Farmers’ Mid Canterbury dairy chair Nick Giera said the labour shortage was putting strain on property owners.

“It’s already having an impact on farmers who are struggling to find good people, it means work hours increase and puts more pressure on existing staff and ultimately it is going to become a health and safety issue.” There was about 2000 vacancies in the dairy industry alone in the Canterbury region with a similar shortage being experienced in Southland. INZ have defended the situation, again presenting Covid as the underlying factor. “Since the borders closed in March last year, the Government

has also made a number of changes to immigration settings to support employers to retain their current migrant workforce,” INZ border, visa and operations general manager Nicola Hogg said. “Any decision on when and how to reopen SMC expression of interest selections will be made by ministers.”

Petition plans Mid Canterbury’s Filipino community is urging the government reintroduce a South Island work visa to help halt an exodus of skilled migrant workers offshore. The visa previously offered a pathway to residency if migrants who were on

an essential skills work visa and had worked continuously for five years but had since been made unavailable. As of yesterday, the petition had received 835 signatures. Petition closes September 30.

Jonathan Leask New tenants have been revealed for the River Crossing precinct development in Ashburton – and it’s got developers excited. The development, next door to Countdown South, will feature Kmart as the anchor tenant, along with nine separate food and beverage tenancies, which the developers, Tricroft Properties, confirmed seven have now been filled. Along with Kmart, Coffee Culture and Couplands – moving across town – were announced in September last year. ‘Potholes not going away’ – funding shortfall frustrates Ashburton’s roading allocation

Adam Burns One of the biggest roading networks in the country is to get only a small fraction of the $1.2 billion being invested in the wider region, leaving Ashburton’s mayor frustrated. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown has forecast further frustration for local motorists due to a $4.5 million funding shortfall as district council contractors contend with flood damage and endless potholes on the 2600 km network. Mid Canterbury appears to have drawn the short straw around central government funding, with a portion of council’s regional transport committee funding bid being cut through Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s National Land Transport Programme (NLTP). This is despite a reported $2 billion crown loan given to NZTA to help local council’s roading deficits. A total of $51.3 million was requested by council to NZTA for the next three years which cov-

ered maintenance, operations, renewals, road safety promotion and low cost low risk programmes. But the 2021-24 NLTP regional breakdown indicates that council was to get about $46.8 million until 2024. This amounts to less than 4 per cent of the $1.2 billion plans for Canterbury unveiled by Transport Minister Michael Wood last week. The figure is inclusive of initial emergency works approved

for the May 30-31 floods which caused about $5 million worth of damage to the network. Although less than previously indicated by NZTA, the shortfall has left a disappointed Ashburton mayor far from happy. “Our roads need more money,” Brown said. “We do not have a bottomless pit of money and we’re not getting the money that we requested to spend on the roads.” He added potholes would continue to be a factor due to

Walking and cycling improvements $200K Local road improvements $5.2 million Local road maintenance $40.6 million Key features include safety improvements through the AshburtonRakaia SH1 corridor and intersection upgrades at Tinwald and Walnut Avenue the financial shortfall. “We’re going to see more of what we already have including potholes.” A report detailing implications for the district was set to be considered at a council meeting next month.

Maddison Gourlay For many businesses in the district a rent abatement is a landlord throwing them a lifeline but one local business turned it in to an opportunity to help others. Local building owners, the Murney family, last week offered financial institution NBS Ashburton, who rent the ground floor of the Murney Main building on Burnett Street, a rent abatement due to the Covid-19 Level 4 restrictions.

Vegetation fire Fire crews from the Alford Forest and Methven volunteer fire brigades were called to a vegetation fire around 11pm on Sunday night on Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road that was caused by a tree falling on live powerlines due to the windy conditions. After fire crews had the all clear from the local electricity authority, they extinguished the smouldering vegetation in the paddock.

Tinwald fire The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a vegetation fire on Hollands Road in Tinwald around 6pm Sunday night. An existing fire had reignited in the windy conditions and caused the vegetation fire to ignite a tree. The fire expanded to an area of around 50 square metres and took the crews 45 minutes to extinguish. A Fire and Emergency spokesman said that it is understood the fire originated in an offal pit.

Burn pit The Hinds and Willowby volunteer fire brigades were called to vegetation fire on the Rangitata Highway around 7.15pm on Sunday. A farmer’s burn pit was reignited due to the heavy winds. The fire was under control and crews left the scene at 8pm.

Garden shed

Giving back to the community NBS were grateful for the option, but general manager of finance Helen Ibbotson and local branch manager David Jones asked the Murney family if the rent relief could instead be donated to the community. “We are fortunate at NBS that the pandemic has not impacted us as much as many other businesses,” Ibbotson said. “[We] decided that those likely in need currently should benefit and a decision was made to donate the $3000 (rent relief) to local charity St Vincent de Paul, to assist their foodbank,” Jones said. “It always feels good to give back and work for a company that provides real support for our community.”

SHORT & SHARP

The Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to Barkers Road in Methven at around 4pm on Sunday due to a small garden shed leaving the property. They found the various garden shed pieces in the neighbouring area, returning them to the property and weighing them down to prevent it happening again.

Derelict house The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a derelict house in Bowen Street at around 6pm Sunday after the heavy winds caused parts of the roof to start lifting. Crews were unable to secure the roof, so they did what they could to avoid further hazards, and left it up to the property owner.

CBD project back on track Jonathan Leask The $15 million Ashburton CBD Revitalisation Project is back on target for completion by November 22. After a two-week stand-down under Covid Alert Level 4, the contractors made good progress on East Street under Alert Level 3 restrictions to reinstate limited traffic along East Street by the time businesses reopened under Alert Level 2 on Wednesday. It is all go on the reconstruction of East Street. Council infrastructure services group manager, Neil McCann said the traffic signals are set to be installed at the intersection with Moore Street

this week and are scheduled to be commissioned next Thursday – one day later than was originally programmed. “Once they have been commissioned and are functioning, the intersection will be completely opened to all traffic,” he said. The asphalt concrete work on East Street, between Moore and Tancred streets, was completed on Monday – one day ahead of schedule. Between Tancred and Burnett streets will be asphalt concreted on Sunday followed by Burnett Street to Havelock Street on Monday, McCann said. “Once asphalt concreted work is complete, the entire East Street will be open for traffic and parking.” Currently East Street is only open between Burnett Street and Havelock Street to northbound traffic, and Burnett to Tancred Street to southbound traffic, with no parking available.

Pedestrian access is available however there is work being undertaken on some foothpath sections. “All underground services have been installed in the footpath area on the shop-side of East Street between Tancred and Burnett streets, with paving now under way. “The paving of this section will be completed by the end of this week. “The work to install the underground services in the Moore Street to Tancred Street section started last week and is progressing well. “The paving team will begin paving from the Sparrow’s end of this section early next week.” The progress means that the project was now back on track for its November 22 completion date, McCann said, however that will be subject to any further delays caused by Covid alert level restrictions or extreme weather that may occor.

Talley’s silent on progress of safety investigations Malcolm Hopwood Talley’s aren’t commenting on the investigation into its health and safety culture at its Ashburton site. An independent investigation into health and safety by former New Zealand Police Commissioner, Mike Bush, was due to be presented to Talley’s last month but chief executive, Tony Hazlett, would not say if it had been received. The report was in addition to WorkSafe’s own review of all sites at Talley’s, which was one of New Zealand’s biggest food production and supply companies. The need for health and safety process reviews arose in July after an Ashburton whistleblower aired serious concerns about filthy machinery and on-site injuries. That prompted others to come forward with similar worries. The most recent incident at the Ashburton plant resulted in a

General manager, Roger Sutton, said early yesterday’s wind event wasn’t as bad as Thursday night’s, however, 100 customers, scattered across rural Mid Canterbury, had lost power. “Team members attempted to rectify the supply on Sunday night, but wind conditions made working impossible,” he said. “Standing upright during the peak of the storm was challenging, let alone climbing a ladder.” The damage was caused by trees falling on to lines.

Te Reo session

Best friends Molly Tippytoe the lamb and Nuka the german shepherd enjoy sitting on the lawn together.

A baa-rilliant friendship A five-year-old german shepherd dog and a lamb only a couple weeks old have become inseparable friends. That’s delighted and surprised their owners and the dog’s breeders, rural Mid Canterbury residents Gavin and Carol Black. Their son and family live in French Farm, Banks Peninsula, with their two german shepherds, among various other animals. Those animals now include a little lamb the kids have named Molly Tippytoe Black. Gavin and Carol’s daughter-

in-law Adele Black explained the unusual lamb and dog relationship. “We started lambing last week and one of our ewes unexpectedly had triplets,’’ Adele said. “She could not cope with three lambs. “The ewe left one lamb in the paddock and by the time we found it, it was cold and limp, the kids and I quickly retrieved it.” She said Isabella,7, and Joshua, 6, “exploded with delight” when she let them keep the lamb as a pet.

“She became a real feature in our house, following Josh and Izzy everywhere.” Having a lamb in the house was a lot messier than the Black family anticipated, so they decided to put Molly Tippytoe in with Nuka, the german shepherd. “I was very apprehensive to put a tiny lamb with a dog, but true to her kind nature, Nuka took this lamb on and started caring for it like it was her own puppy,” Adele said. Nuka would clean Molly Tippytoe, sleep with her and keep her

warm. But even with all the love from Nuka, Molly Tippytoe has now taken a liking to spending her days with the chickens while Josh and Izzy were at school. But as soon as the kids get home from school, she’s on the lawn with Nuka under the trampoline with the kids. “This poor lamb must be slightly confused, not sure who her Mum really is,’’ Adele said. “Is it Isabella and Joshua? A german shepherd dog or is she a chicken? “Only time will tell.”

Monster drone ends its flying days Malcolm Hopwood It has to be one of the biggest drones that’s ever flown New Zealand skies. The Egret 5, an autonomous crop sprayer, has been flying above Mid Canterbury, spraying insecticide on Wakanui and Pendarves farms until a few days ago. With a wing span of eight metres and weighing in at 240kgs when fully loaded, it’s sprayed chemicals on a range of crops and vegetables on farms owned by Andrew West and Alex Hewson. But last week, out of the blue, it was donated to Ashburton Aviation Museum. Rather than ship it back to Oakland in the US, its Pyka owners presented it to the museum, adding to its collection of around 40 planes. The drone was transported to various paddocks, assembled – its wings and nose cone comes off – and then controlled by a hand-

Postponement The Ashburton County Lions has had to postpone its Stars in Your Eyes event until early 2022. Due to the uncertainty around Covid alert level restrictions they have reluctantly made the decision to delay the event. A specific date has not been confirmed for 2022.

Parking strategy The Ashburton District Council is consulting the community over a parking strategy for the district and an Ashburton town centre parking management plan. Council is asking if people support a second West Street carpark (on West Street reserve land opposite Baring Square West), public charging for E-bikes and E-cars, and if more parking for older drivers should be available. Pyka has been experimenting with the Egret 5 and now wants to further develop a drone, over double the size, which will spray 320 litres of water on to banana plantations around the world. Aviation museum treasurer, Owen Moore, said, when the offer came, “we couldn’t turn it down.” “It’s the most modern aircraft

we have here,” president Stephen Johnston said. Normally the museum houses historic aircraft but the Egret is about as modern as it gets. “It’s unique for us,” they said. When it’s ready, it’ll be hoisted to the roof of the main exhibition area to assume the role it’s been used for over Mid Canterbury.

The Prime Minister has called on all New Zealanders, and especially Aucklanders to get vaccinated. “Even one dose helps,” Jacinda Ardern said at the Covid-19 press conference yesterday. Her call comes as the announcement was made that Auckland was to remain at lockdown Alert Level 4 until 11.59pm, Tuesday, September 21. “We want everyone in NZ vaccinated. Let’s get on with it,” she said. Cases are still emerging from three clusters, and of the clusters from the last two weeks 17 remains unlinked.

with Heather Chalmers

Home of the potato Heather Chalmers Ashburton’s central position was the deciding factor when it came to the location of a purpose-built storage facility to cater for Canterbury’s big process potato industry. The facility is owned by the Potato Seed Co-operative, a group of 11 potato growers that supply McCain Foods at Washdyke, Timaru. The first seed went into the store in March and it was officially opened in July. Michelle Pye of the Pye Group, one of the shareholders, said that almost since the co-operative was established four years ago it had plans to build a purpose-built storage facility. Growers previously leased storage in Timaru and Christchurch and a catalyst was the loss of storage in Christchurch. “The seed is grown around Mid Canterbury and a lot of the processed potato growers have land in Mid Canterbury, so it made sense to have it in Ashburton,” Pye said. “It is also more efficient to have everything in one place.” Canterbury is a big producer of processed potatoes, used in frozen chips, French fries and potato chips. Sited at the Ashburton Business Estate, the 2.2 hectare-storage facility comprises two 3000 square metre coolstores with a capacity for 8000 tonnes of seed, plus an office and tearoom block, weigh-

bridge and a tunnel house for winter grow-outs. Imported chilling equipment from Europe ensures the potatoes are kept at the correct temperature and humidity. Seed potatoes are grown by growers outside of the co-operative. “We buy the seed, store, grade and cut it and sell it to our group of growers.

“The bulk of our seed was being carted down to Timaru to be stored, then graded and carted back to Mid Canterbury to be planted. So, it saves a lot of transport and means everything is in one place, which makes it easier to manage,” Pye said. Grading and cutting lines have been set up at the new facility. Previously these were at a separate location to the leased stores,

requiring extra handling. As well as co-operative members, the facility was also funded by eight private investors which were crucial to the project going ahead, Pye said. Storage space is also hired to other seed potato growers. In addition to general manager Ken Small, the facility employs a store manager. Three forklift drivers and up

to 20 graders are also employed during the busy times in February, March and April, when the seed arrives in store and in spring, when the seed is being sent out to growers. The co-operative’s directors are Pye (chairwoman), Mid Canterbury potato growers Ross Hewson and Daniel Lovett and John Jackson, of McCain Foods (independent).

Carrfields’ pastoral team grows Ashburton-based Carrfields Grain and Seed has significantly increased the size of its pastoral agronomy team, in order to meet growing demand for its services. The team has grown from one pastoral agronomist to six in just six months, with representatives now spread across some key South Island locations of Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury and Central Otago. Carrfields Grain and Seed New Zealand sales manager Lyndon Anderson said the growth in the team was the result of a strategic business decision to invest further into pastoral agronomy. “We identified a clear opportunity to add value in the pastoral agronomy space, while also working more closely with farmers to navigate a path through the myriad changes facing the pastoral sector from a regulatory and compliance point of view,” Anderson said. “Farmers are facing numerous challenges such as nitrogen use limits, which are now capped at 190 units of nitrogen per hectare in certain farming systems. There are also winter grazing compliance rules governing the amount of winter feed farmers are allowed to grow and the aspect of the paddock it is grown in.” As a business, Carrfields Grain and Seed foresaw a need to have representatives readily available to farmers to tackle these issues together and adapt to change, Anderson said. “Having more representatives on the ground enables us to work with local farmers more efficiently and add more value to their operations as we grow our service offering in the pastoral agronomy space, while also looking to solely focus on agronomy and not getting distracted by other categories.” While Carrfields Grain and Seed, a seed production and marketing company, has always had a presence in pastoral agronomy, mainly in Mid Canterbury, the enlarged team is now able to offer a South Island-wide service, providing tailored agronomy solutions, recommendations, and advice specific to individual farmers’ operations. The team has a strong focus on identifying opportunities to add value and increase efficiencies across farming operations, including the use of technology such as Agworld agronomy software to add value and help future proof farmers’ operations. “We believe the expanded pastoral side of our business complements our strong arable business, as more farmers are now looking for alternative options to diversify their farming operations. In all our dealings with farmers we are aiming to work collaboratively to get the best outcomes across the board, tailored to the unique circumstances of each operation,” Anderson said. The six pastoral agronomists making up Carrfields Grain and Seed’s larger team are Matt Jensen (upper North Canterbury), Will Lampp (lower North Canterbury),

Domestic services include supply and advice around retail seed, agricultural chemical solutions, grain trading, world leading cereal seed varieties and hemp

production. The business also provides seed multiplication and production services in New Zealand, Oregon in the United States and

Europe. Carrfields Grain and Seed is recognised globally for marketing cereals, pulses, forages and vegetable seeds to over 50 countries.

Clayton, Pine the top Kiwis Mid Canterbury stock manager Cam Clayton and his heading dog Pine were the top ranked New Zealand team and fifth overall, in a trans-Tasman challenge to identify the hardest working dog. Clayton said he was amazed by the distances Pine travelled during winter months, a quiet period on Hakatere Station, an Ashburton Gorge sheep and beef property. “I believe Pine would be right up there in the top, giving them a good run in the summer,” Clayton said. Over the three weeks of the competition Pine clocked up 319 kilometres over 35 hours and 53 minutes at an average speed of 8.89km/hour. Clayton’s dog was one of three New Zealand entries, competing with nine from throughout Australia in the 2021 Cobber Challenge. The dogs wore GPS collars to track the distance, duration and average speed of their work. Fellow Kiwi competitor Peter Aitken from Otago, who came seventh, agreed that it was eye-opening to see how far his dog Spark travelled. The 2021 Cobber Challenge winner was a kelpie, Skyblue Jack, which is owned by Ben Jeffery, a leading hand at a 3200-hectare sheep and cattle farm in

Victoria’s western district. With Jeffery’s boss unable to get back to Mepungah Pastoral because of border closures, he, along with Skyblue Jack and his kennel mates, had to step up to get all the stock work done. Those circumstances gave six-year-old Skyblue Jack a leg up in the competition and saw him clock a Cobber Challenge record of 1012 kilometres over the threeweek period. They worked every day to record 87 hours worked and an average speed of 11.59km/h. That’s an average of just over four hours and 48km a day. “Jack’s happiest when he’s working – I even had to hold him back on a few days to make sure he still had plenty in the tank,” Jeffery said. Competition organiser and Cobber marketing manager Kellie Savage said the challenge acknowledged the invaluable contribution that working dogs make on Australian and New Zealand farms every day. “Our farmers always tell us that a good dog is worth at least a few workers. “They don’t just provide a safer, more efficient work environment, but there is an incredible mateship between farmers and their dogs,” Savage said.

Synlait Milk looks Low venison prices to cut 150 jobs leave farmers frustrated RNZ A deer industry leader is worried farmers will start exiting the sector if venison prices don’t improve. Covid-19’s impact on the restaurant trade worldwide has come as a major blow, with deer farmers now facing depressed prices for the second year in a row. The latest figures from AgriHQ show in July 2021 venison average export values fell short of the five-year average of $13.75/kg by $3.67/kg, and was $1.28/kg below July last year. Deer Farmers’ Association chairperson John Somerville said the organisation recently

shared the concerns of many farmers in a letter to all of New Zealand’s venison marketing company chief executives. The viewpoint that farmers would stoically hold on until prices returned to viable levels was overly optimistic and not based on the on-farm reality, the letter said. “I cannot overemphasise how low farmer sentiment is,” Sommerville said. “There is great concern among the deer farming community at all levels that large numbers will start leaving the industry if the prices don’t improve considerably over this upcoming season and that will also continue to

erode the breeding herd.” The association wanted to ensure everyone involved in the marketing and selling of New Zealand venison was doing their utmost to deliver higher farmgate prices as fast as is practical, he said. While farmers understood the impact of Covid-19 lockdowns on traditional food service markets, members were increasingly frustrated that alternative markets had been slow to develop. “To express these concerns bluntly, compared to other meat proteins post Covid 2020 and to date in 2021, venison’s market performance and financial return to the producers has been abysmal.”

South Island dairy company Synlait Milk is looking to axe about 150 jobs as it moves to restructure its business. The company said it was overstaffed in some areas and under resourced in others, and is looking to reset it operations and resources accordingly. Chief executive John Penno said the aim was about realigning its workforce to match new objectives and key business units, and clear away unnecessary obstacles within the organisation. “This is not just a cost cut exercise, it is a complete reset of how operate as a business,” Penno said. Synlait has about 1000 workers and expected to reduce its headcount by about 15 per cent, which would deliver potential annual savings of $10 million to $12m.

“We need to review and reset the structure of our business to match our current goals to be successful,” Penno said. Synlait makes a range of dairy products, but has grown on supplying infant formula to A2 Milk, which has been battered over the past year by Covid-19-related disruptions to its key market China. It has previously reported a build up of stock, shipping delays, and market uncertainty affecting its outlook. In May it warned it was facing a significant full year loss of $20m to $30m. It will report its full year result on 27 September. Penno said the restructuring proposal would be discussed with staff over the next two weeks and union before final decisions were made.

As spring planting is upon us, you may still be looking for something to grow or have a paddock available? We still have a few options for you, call now to discuss!! We would be glad to hear from you.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You will let go of pride in the hope of coming to a harmonious place in a relationship. Other parties may not be so willing but your example will lead the way. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Love is many things. Today, it’s being able to correctly assess and cater to an emotional state. Turn your nurturing powers on yourself or turn them to another person. Either way, the love begets love. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s a situation you pursued in the past. The doors were closed back then. Now brings the beginning of the turn. This one doesn’t need to be seized so much as slowly, curiously encountered. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You admire emotional restraint, but don’t be fooled. People who seem in control of their “feels” are possibly not feeling them quite as deeply as you are. Your passion intensifies the highs and lows. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll be bright in two moments: the practice moment in the safety of an empty room and the moment of inhale that pauses the action for you to insert yourself between opportunity and a grand potential. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There was a time you didn’t know the standard, only your own experience which didn’t teach you enough. Now you know how people can help one another, so you see what’s not going on as clearly as what is. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Your focus is on point and you’ve never been so serious about advancing your interests and the interests of those you answer to. Narrow down your task list so the big important things get the best of you. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): If there’s one thing you don’t need today, it’s advice. For starters, your intuition is on fire. And furthermore, you’re going to do this thing in a way that’s so unique, no one else has thought of it yet. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There is no such thing as failure. If you’re putting things out into the world, trying things, working through fear and limitation, risking your pride, then you’re winning no matter what the outcome. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Impart the plan and cast your supporters in fitting roles. Then, watch it unfold. You’re a guide through this process. Don’t get so involved in the labour that you forget to put your head up to get the overview. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Some people you appreciate because you can count on them to make good sense and help you onto the right path. Then there are people you appreciate because they don’t have to make sense to be loveable. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Because you want to know what others want, you ask, fully expecting lies. It takes a special kind of listening to get past social niceties and know which questions to ask to get to the real truth.

Pothole plague set to continue

S

o the pothole dodging will continue across the Ashburton district – and for quite some time. That’s an obvious conclusion to jump to with the news revealed in our story on page 4 that the Ashburton District’s plea for extra roading and pothole funding has been pretty much ignored by the pay masters in Wellington. Those pay Gods are the New Zealand Transport Agency, the state-owned entity responsible for managing the country’s state highway network, among other duties. NZTA have allocated $46.8 million to the Ashburton District for the next three years to cover most things roading, but especially maintenance. Now, to look at it, you would think that’s a lot of financial support. And it is, but the Ashburton District Council wanted $53.1 million so they’ve come up short by $4.5 million on what they

Daryl Holden asked for. And what does that mean for you and I and the any other poor sod trying to safely navigate pothole-riddled roads? It means the accidents, near misses, injuries or worse caused by potholes, will continue because many of our roads are a complete shambles in terms of quality and, in some extreme cases, safety. That’s why every extra cent the council could get to sort the issue, the better. It does leave you with a few questions about the whole roading funding fiasco. • Why has the Ashburton district, with one of the biggest roading net-

works in the country, not got more assistance? If its 2600km of roading network is indeed up there with the biggest in the country then surely that should have been reflected in extra funding. Shouldn’t it?

$2 billion loan from the Government to offer further assistance to numerous local councils’ roading deficits, then could they please explain why Ashburton’s funding request still came up short?

is it that the entire Canterbury region “ How gets $1.2 billion, but Ashburton receives just a minor portion of that, less than four per cent to be exact?

• How is it that the entire Canterbury region gets $1.2 billion, but Ashburton receives just a minor portion of that, less than four per cent to be exact? • Did the NZTA forget that the floods at the end of May caused an estimated $5 million worth of damage to our district’s network to set us back even further? • And if NZTA received a reported

• Why did the Ashburton District Council not ask for more than its initial $53.1 million in the first place, especially given the seriousness of our roading network and the need to not only fix squillions of potholes, but resurface many of the roads? • What would it take for our council heads to go back to NZTA and ask for a review? Is that even

possible? • Is it time for an Ashburton council delegation to make a trip to Wellington to put our case in person, if that hasn’t happened already? • Will Ashburton ever get on top of its pothole plague, given that patching up roads is really like applying a sticking plaster and not a solution? • Are the only ones slightly happy about our roading woes, but privately happy you understand because gloating about it would not be a good look, Ashburton vehicle and cycle tyre repair and wheel alignment businesses? So, that’s where we at, but we now need solutions, people. Tell us what you think the council’s next move should be because we’re in this together, potholes and all. Confessions of a procrastinating hot tubber

I

’m going to start this week’s column with a time saving tip I came across this week. Hopefully those time poor people amongst us get something out of this little titbit. We’re all obsessed with finding the best: the best TV, the best laptop, the best toothpaste. I am guilty of researching/ procrastinating before making a decision about a purchase. In my case it’s because 90 per cent of the time, within 24 hours of arriving home with a new purchase, a better deal on that very item pops up in a pamphlet or on social media. At a certain point, though, you’re just wasting time says Personal Finance Advisor and Author Ramit Sethi. Ramit says we shouldn’t spend more than two seconds on decisions that

don’t really matter. So, the next time you find yourself deliberating, ask: “Is this something that actually matters? Or should this be a two second decision?”. That decision could take some time though, right? One decision we made recently after many months of procrastinating was to push ahead and purchase a spa pool. As a 60+ year old and STILL awaiting a Covid shot, here’s why I believe myself and hundreds of others are not yet vaccinated through no fault of our own. At my age call up in early July the earliest appointment slot was nine weeks away at the only vaccination centre of Life Pharmacy deep in the midst of major urban roadworks. Methven Medical Centre, to their credit, was also vaccinating their own patients. How did the CDHB ever think one pharmacy was the way to begin the delivery of vaccines in a critical world-wide pandemic?? Appalling strategy. Many in this group have gone to South Canterbury and now we watch younger age groups being done at lots more local open centres while we still wait albeit booked in! So please do not assume apathy in this age group. I’m very grateful we have no Covid in the South Island.

Pam Annand * * * The vaccination rates in Ashburton appear to be lagging behind and apparently “disappointing”, in particular the older age groups. Let me tell you of our experience, being both in the over 65 category. We both applied for our booking (separately) very early in July and I received my appointment for my first jab for July 31 which was good and by now I have had both jabs. However my lovely wife hasn’t had her first one yet which is scheduled for September 15. Before I went for my first jab I called and asked if I could bring my wife for her to get one at the same time. Apparently not possible because they were all booked up for some time ahead. No gaps. When I went to get mine I asked if there was any ‘spares’ at the end of the day I could bring

my wife in for an earlier appointment. The answer again was “No”. When I went in for my second jab on August 21 I again asked if there was a possibility my wife could get any ‘spare’ vaccines at the end of the day and they took my phone number. That didn’t work out either. An elderly couple in front of me when I went for my second jab had booked their appointment, but when they fronted up were told that their appointment wasn’t recorded in the system so they were turned away. They looked pretty let down about that. I have heard other stories of folk being turned away at other venues for various reasons also, not because they were showing ill health. So in a lot of cases it seems the lagging of vaccines is not surprising given the battle for some folk to get one in the first place. It certainly is not for the want of

Barrett steers ABs to commanding win All Blacks first five-eighth Beauden Barrett has shrugged off a calf injury causing him discomfort during the side’s win over Argentina, suggesting the issue was down to “old age”. In the side’s 39-0 win over the Pumas on the Gold Coast on Sunday, Barrett left the field with 30 minutes still on the clock, and had given the goal kicking duties to younger brother Jordie before that point. With Richie Mo’unga not joining the squad until the last round of the Rugby Championship, Barrett is the only player in the All Blacks squad who is a primary first five-eighth, so there was no reason to risk further aggravating the calf niggle in a match where the scoreline was as lopsided. “After last week, I’m still struggling with something; maybe it’s just old age,” Barrett said after the game. Barrett continued his strong form in the Rugby Championship in the win over the Pumas, putting his dynamic running game in full flight as he attacked the line and put team-mates into space. While the 95-test veteran flaunted his running game, setting up two tries with spectacular offloads, he continued to play tactically and mixed in his kicking game well as the match progressed. The All Blacks controlled the match

Despite a few wayward lineouts and missed opportunities early in the game, they showed patience in their approach and, with 68 per cent of the football, they eventually made their dominance count. Two tries late in the first half meant the All Blacks went into the break with a scoreline reflective of their dominance, however the Pumas defended well throughout the contest and slowed the game down in the second half. Ultimately, the Pumas had little opportunity to put points on the board, and their aggressive intent to kick for the sideline did not pay dividends.

“We’re very pleased with that,” Barrett said of the All Blacks’ performance. “Our attitude was right up there with where we need it to be and our intent was great. “We needed to work hard, roll our sleeves up; they are a very difficult team to break down and I think we did that.” The sides will meet again next Saturday in the next round of the Rugby Championship, and Barrett said there was “no secret recipe” for what the side would be addressing during the week ahead. “It’s just taking it one phase at a time, taking them deep in phases and working hard because they’re very good at the breakdown and if you let them get on the ball, they’re hard to move.”

Quade pays tribute to Sonny Bill Wallabies hero Quade Cooper acknowledged the huge influence former All Blacks and NRL star Sonny Bill Williams had during his dark times in the sport, after stepping up to nail a game-winning goal against South Africa in his international return on Sunday. Cooper, playing his first test since 2017, was flawless off the kicking tee, nailing eight from eight including the game winner after the final siren on the Gold Coast on Sunday night to give the Wallabies a 28-26 win. Coach Dave Rennie said there was “no

risk” picking Cooper, 33, who was called up to the squad before the Bledisloe Cup games against the Kiwis and was finally picked after three straight Wallaby losses, and he delivered. “We didn’t think it was a risk,” Rennie said of picking Cooper, who hadn’t played a professional game in five months. “Based on form (in training) it was hard to leave him out. “He’d be a young fella (at the 2023 World Cup) if he was in the Springbok team.

“Of course he could (be Wallabies No. 10 at the World Cup), but we’re not thinking too far ahead at this stage. “He was excited to get an opportunity and delivered big time, and I know he’s keen and available for the rest of the year.” Despite his on-field heroics, Cooper said he still had his “fingers crossed” that he would finally be granted Australian citizenship after four failed attempts. The Wallabies will play the Springboks again this Saturday in Brisbane.

Medvedev crushes Djokovic’s Slam bid Novak Djokovic’s bid for the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969 ended one victory short with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final yesterday. Medvedev’s surprisingly lopsided triumph gave him his first major championship, and prevented Djokovic from winning what would have been the record 21st of his career. The No. 1-ranked Djokovic entered this match 27-0 in 2021 at the sport’s four most important tournaments, enduring the burdens of expectations and pressure that came along with his two-track pursuit of history over the past seven months and, in New York, the past two weeks. He beat Medvedev in the Australian Open final on a hard court in February, then added titles on clay at the French Open in June and Wimbledon on grass in July. But Djokovic, a 34-year-old from Serbia, couldn’t get to 28-0. He simply was far from his best on this particular day. He made mistakes, 38 unforced errors in all. He wasn’t able to convert a break chance until it was too little, too late. He showed frustration, too, destroying his racket by pounding it three times against the court, drawing boos from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. A lot of Djokovic’s issues had to do with No. 2-ranked Medvedev, who used his 1.98-metre frame to chase down everything and respond with seemingly effortless groundstrokes and delivered pinpoint serving. Djokovic reached his record-equalling 31st Grand Slam final with six victories on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. But he could not quite get the last one he needed, and remains tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 major titles. The last man to sweep a season’s singles trophies at the Slams remains Rod Laver, who did it twice – in 1962 and 1969 – and was in the stands on Sunday. Instead, Djokovic joins Jack Crawford in 1933 and Lew Hoad in 1956 as men who won a year’s first trio of Grand Slam tournaments and made it all the way to the US Open final before losing.

Ronaldo’s triumphant return to Man U The leap, swivel and landing with outstretched arms as the Old Trafford crowd roared. If anyone missed it the first time — and it’s hard to imagine when so many eyes were transfixed on Cristiano Ronaldo — they got another chance in the second half. This was always going to be Ronaldo’s day. Two goals, two chances to stage his trademark celebration in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle, ensured the performance matched the club hype that fans young and old embraced with their Viva Ronaldo

chants and willingness to hand over cash for new jerseys. Less than five months ago the fans were storming the stadium in a rage against the owners. Now the green-and-gold anti-Glazer protest scarves were hanging over the No 7 Ronaldo shirts the megastore is struggling to match the demand for in the two weeks since he joined from Juventus. “There was loads of expectation, and he has delivered,” United manager and former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjær said. Greg’s 11-year drought finally comes to an end Matt Markham Lockdown and the halt of racing around New Zealand meant a lot of trainers had to wait a while to experience the thrill of winning a race again, but few have had to wait as long as Greg Prendergast. The Ashburton horseman, who trains a small team from the Ashburton Racecourse, hadn’t tasted success since May of 2010, but ended a lengthy drought on home soil on Sunday when Rosies Terror broke through for her maiden success at the transferred Methven meeting. “Even after all this time, it’s still a really good feeling when you win a race,” Prendergast said. “We haven’t had a great deal of luck, we’ve raced some bad ones, sold one to Australia and had a couple get injuries, so we’ve waited a while for this one and it’s nice to finally get it.” Prendergast races Rosies Terror with his sons, Neville, Phil and Dwayne, after they bought the daughter of Terror To Love off Graham Court two years ago. It’s been a long road to victory though, with the four-year-old mare testing her trainer’s pa-

tience on more than just the odd occasion during her early days in the stable. “She could be a bit of a madam there for a while, it’s taken a long time to get her sorted. “But she’s great now, a really good spell seemed to work the oracle with her and she’s a lot better both at home and out on the track.” Prior to Sunday the mare had shown she wasn’t far off a victory with some excellent runs – doing it tough and grinding down her rivals on the track. A calming in the mare’s nature also meant that they were able to switch her away from mobile racing to stand starts, and that’s also been a massive part of the

turnaround in form. “She’s shown a real liking for them (standing starts) and is one of those horses, who just wants to keep running – the harder and longer they go the better for her. “I think she’ll handle the step up in grade because of that. “They do tend to go a bit quicker than in maidens, so hopefully she’ll be competitive.” The win came with a large sentimental factor as well. Drivers in the race won by Rosies Terror wore black armbands to acknowledge the passing recently of another Mid Canterbury harness racing stalwart in Ron Paterson – a man who Prendergast considered a great

friend and had a long association with. “We did a lot together with the Mid Canterbury Trotting Owners and Breeders group, Ron was a great friend and a top man, it was pretty special to be able to acknowledge his passing with that win.” Rosies Terror is one of two horses Prendergast – who played over 100 games of rugby for Mid Canterbury – is training currently. The other, incidentally, is also by Terror To Love out of Lady Shamrock, who was Prendergast’s last winner before Sunday. And the hope now is that the next winner doesn’t take as long as this one did.

Kiwi mare returns in devastating fashion Entriviere has staked her claim for selection in the A$2 million The Invitation with a strong return in the Sheraco Stakes at Kembla Grange on Saturday. It was a belated spring kick-off for the Jamie Richards-trained mare, who was scratched from the Toy Show Quality last month due to a foot abscess. Entriviere showed no signs of that issue on Saturday, unleashing down the outside to defeat Fituese by 1 and a 1/4 lengths with Marboosha another three-quarters of a length away third. The Kiwi raider has now won six of her eight starts, and Richards says she is a pleasure to train. “It was great to see her win so well first-up. “We didn’t have a lot of luck leading into the Toy Show and had to scratch, but she trialled well since and Dad (Paul Richards) has been very happy with her, and James McDonald has been happy with her the whole way through,” Richards said. “She is the ultimate professional. She has natural gate speed if we need it or she can take a sit. “They went hard and she

was able to get to the outside and finish off very strongly, which sets her up nicely for 1400m.” Entriviere is likely to go to the Golden Pendant in two

weeks, but her main mission is The Invitation, a set weights and penalties race for fillies and mares on October 23 at Randwick. “We will look to go a month

between runs from the Golden Pendant into The Invitation with a little quiet trial somewhere in between,” Richards said. “If any rain was to arrive, that is only another plus in her corner as she does like to get her toe in. “We don’t have to worry about track conditions with her, as she can go on anything.” Winning jockey James McDonald believes Entriviere is open to further improvement, and agrees she will appreciate a rain-affected track. “She’s a lovely mare. “She has an impeccable record. She’s had a couple of blemishes but apart from that her determination is just incredible. “I think there is more to come from her,” he said. “She will run a strong seven (furlongs) that is for sure. “She is going to have to because from here on she has good competition. “I think she is just crying out for a bit of rain or a bit of give in the ground. “The track is racing pretty firm and you wouldn’t want to see her too many times on firm ground.”

RACING 23 Locals to the fore Sunday’s meeting was

dominated by local connections with six of the ten races won by horses with a Mid Canterbury feel to them. Outstanding young horsewoman, Sarah O’Reilly, grabbed herself a double during the middle stages of the card. A confident drive on the Mark Jones-trained Deny Everything secured her first for the day as the pair ground their way to success in a length of the straight battle with favourite, Socrates, and then Buckskin delivered in a similarly tough fashion a few races later. Ricky May – as he so often does at Methven meetings – found himself in the winners’ circle earlier in the day with Reggie Golightly, who was a dominant performer and another gold cap local, John Morrison, saluted on the evergreen Take After Me late in the day at a big figure price. One of the more impressive winners on the programme was the Rakaia trotter, Test The Boundaries. The Allan Ford-trained, Jason Ford-driven square gaiter bucked the racing pattern of the day to come from off the speed to win impressively during the middle stages of the day.

Di Caprio announces intentions Di Caprio is a supporting act no more after winning the Avon City Ford New Brighton Cup at Addington Raceway on Friday night. The Brian O’Meara-trained entire finished runner-up behind Classie Brigade in the race last year, but he was able to turn the tables on his more fancied opponent in this year’s running. The son of Shadow Play had a quiet run three back on the markers throughout the 2600m journey, and driver Sam Ottley was able to weave her magic down the home straight to find a passage up the passing lane, where Di Caprio got the better of his rivals to win by half a length. O’Meara was pleased with the performance, and said he received a glowing report from Ottley following the race. “Sam said to me that he would have won very easily if he could have got clear sooner. Past the post he was away by a long way,” O’Meara said. Friday’s win was also Di Caprio’s first at stakes level, and O’Meara has a stark warning for his rivals heading deeper into spring racing. “I think he could get a wee bit better yet,” he said. The New Zealand Trotting Cup remains Di Caprio’s main target, and O’Meara has pencilled in a path towards the two-mile feature. “I will probably have a go at the Canterbury Classic, and the Methven Cup,” he said. “We will go from there and see what happens.”

Hockey returns to the turf Matt Markham Hockey returned to the Mid Canterbury turf over the weekend as the final week of play for the season kicked into gear. And now a battle royale for overall success in the Men’s Division 2 competition will come down to this Sunday, where the two teams at the top of the standings, Wakanui and Hampstead Lowcliffe will fight it out. After a month-long break from play, the competition officially resumed on Sunday night, with two matches in the penultimate round of the season for the Hyde Trophy. With Wakanui, who have been the benchmark for most of the season, sitting out the round with the bye, the Hampstead and Lowcliffe side had an opportunity to put themselves at the top of the pecking order in their match with Tinwald Orange, and for most of the match they looked to have grabbed it. Up 4-1 at half time – after scoring three goals in the opening quarter of the match – the combined side were in control, but a resolute Tinwald side kept coming at them, and when the final whistle blew a 4-all draw was recorded. Hampstead Lowcliffe grabbed goals through Hayden Sturm and Cam Wall as well as a father-andson scoring double from Grant Wilson and son, William – but Tinwald fought back strong with Richard Pearce and Toby Smith

finding the net, and two other goals in the match of which scorers were unavailable. The night’s second match saw Tinwald Black take on Allenton, and it turned out to be a one-sided affair. The Tinwald side jumped out

to an early 2-0 lead and managed to maintain that into the fourth quarter, where they bagged another two goals to take out the win 4-0. Harsh Patel netted a double for the match, while Kieran McCall and Cam Clayton also found

their goal-scoring form. The Women’s Division One final between Wakanui and Methven was played last night, while tonight the men will do battle in an all-Wakanui match between their two division one men’s sides.

Mid Canterbury rugby fans will still get to watch their side on television this season, despite the rescheduled format of the Heartland Championship. The Hammers were to start their season with a televised match from FMG Stadium in Hamilton as part of the Waikato Rugby 100 year celebrations with a match against Thames Valley. The game has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 16 and will be live on Sky Sport with a 2:05pm kick off.
