Celebrating our essential workers on the front line ...
Stepping up to help co-worker PANDEMIC STARS
Malcolm Hopwood “We’re making an unbearable time bearable.” That’s the word from Ashburton New World butchery assistant Shanelle Clark, who is part of the team working long hours providing stock for meat-hungry customers during lockdown. But Clark and colleagues have gone above and beyond by coming to the aid of a fellow worker, who’s at home looking after her mother while her father remains seriously ill in Christchurch hospital. Clark, whose job is to wrap and package the meat and prepare it for sale, has been working night shifts after midnight and clocking up 48 hours a week to cover for the absent staff member. She normally works a day shift, starting at 6am. Making those changes with no fuss, and the extra effort to help a mate out, is why Clark is part of our Covid Champions series acknowledging frontline and essential workers. “I’ve taken on her tasks so she can look after her Mum and relax at home,” Clark said. “I love helping my friend and we’re all doing the extras until she returns.” Clark emphasised that the 13 members in the butchery department work as a team and they’ve
Let’s call them our Covid champions. They’re Mid Canterbury’s essential workers, the unsung heroes of the pandemic. They’re hardworking Mid Cantabrians, who have been on the front line in the fight against the virus working hard to ensure lives stay as normal as possible. We want to recognise those community stars and celebrate them in our Covid Champions series. If you know of any, let us know. Email: editor@theguardian. co.nz

during lockdown. “We’re pleased everything has fallen into place and we’ve been
able to keep the shelves stocked with a range of cuts,” she said. Clark had noticed that custom-
ers were polite and had accepted the lockdown restrictions, but the extra work and longer hours had also placed a strain on her family. While Clark has been working longer hours, her husband has been home looking after eightyear-old William, who has been one of 12 students back at St Joseph’s Primary School. He, like the rest of us, longs for the time when New Zealand returns to Alert Level 1. Clark, too, can’t wait to revert to her normal day shift hours when alert level changes allowed it. “(But) I’m not sure if normal is the word for all this, but I’ll be there.

Local migrants push for return of work visa
Vaccination numbers Ashburton: Over-60 having had first dose: 2500 (29%) Over-60 full vaccinated: 3400 (40%) Over-60 booked: 1500 (18%) District-wise fully vaccinated: 5100 (14%) District-wide just first dose 5000 (14%) Nationally: National full vaccinated: 1.3m (31%) National first dose: 2.6m (61%)
Ashburton vaccination rates appear to be lagging behind.

Low Ashburton vaccination numbers ‘disappointing’ Adam Burns An Ashburton councillor says “disappointingly’’ low vaccination numbers, particularly among older age groups, is leaving our community vulnerable. Recent figures show less than half of Ashburton residents aged 60 and over were fully vaccinated, with less than 40 per cent of that group having received both vaccination doses. Urban ward councillor Carolyn Cameron said those numbers were “very disappointing”.
“Our over-60s should we well and truly vaccinated,” she said. “If we’re under 40 per cent... then we’re vulnerable and that’s disappointing. “When you’ve got people getting through borders and not aware of the rules and coming down here.” Last week, the Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) revealed vaccination numbers pertaining to the Ashburton district, highlighting figures significantly down on national rates. “Over 3400 people aged 60 and over in the Ashburton district have received both their first and second doses and a further 2500 people have received their first dose vaccinations,” DHB acting senior responsible officer for the
Covid-19 response Ralph LaSalle said. The numbers did not relate to the Methven Medical Centre and Ashburton’s Wises Pharmacy, who were managing their own booking systems. District-wide vaccination numbers across all ages in Ashburton sat at about half of national figures, with less than 15 per cent of the population fully vaccinated and about 32 per cent having received one or more doses. The DHB confirmed more than 55 per cent of the wider Canterbury region had received at least one dose, which was aligned with the national picture. But the numbers of those fully
vaccinated in Canterbury were lagging, with more than 18 per cent of the population having received both jabs as of last week. About 30 per cent of New Zealand’s population were fully vaccinated and more than half the population had received at least one Covid jab. The increase of pop-up clinics in Mid Canterbury had begun to ramp up the district’s vaccination rollout over the past couple of weeks.
Mid Canterbury’s Filipino community is urging the government reintroduce a South Island work visa to help halt an exodus of skilled migrant workers offshore. Hundreds have signed a parliamentary petition pleading the government bring back the South Island Contribution Work to Residence Visa. The visa previously offered a pathway to residency if migrants who were on an essential skills work visa and had worked continuously for five years but had since been made unavailable. The petition was shared by the local immigration consultancy Jimenez Immigration on its Facebook page last week. “If we don’t act on this as soon as possible, we will continually lose our skilled migrants. “We personally know of at least five skilled migrants who already left. “They did not want to leave because they have already built their life here, but there is no future for them, hence the decision to leave.” A total of 637 signatures had been recorded. The petition closes at the end of the month.

School: Life in Alert Level 3 Maddison Gourlay Every day is different when it comes to alert level life at Tinwald School, principal Peter Livingstone said. In Alert Level 3, children of essential workers were adapting to life back at school, with Livingstone’s school being one of many in the district that had opened their doors for them. “I am really proud of the kids and how they handled the transition,” Livingstone said. Livingstone said they have been operating in small bubbles and keeping siblings together in the same safe grouping. Level 3 was a flexible
learning environment, with each bubble having a designated classroom, bathrooms and specific outdoor area. “It has been great to see the kids make new friends in their bubble, and all the pupils have been great at self-managing during this time,” Livingstone said. After last year’s national lockdown, Tinwald School changed its big group desks into individual ones to make social distancing during certain alert levels easier on pupils. In level 2 last year, all early learning services, schools, kura and tertiary education facilities were open to everyone, so most students could go back at school. “We will see what happens as it changes every day,” Livingstone said.

Hospice Mid Canterbury (HMC) has a new home and a growing client numbers. After moving into its own new site earlier this year, the number of clients rose to 91 last month. General manager, Debbie Mackle, said it was the most clients they have had on the books since they started in 2015 and was a sizeable increase following its shift into a new base on Havelock Street. Hospice Mid Canterbury provided support for those with a life-limiting illness, plus assistance to their family and caregivers. “We are so thrilled that more people in our community are reaching out to us, and that the message about who we are and how we can support people with a life-limiting illness is starting to cement in the Mid Canterbury community,” Mackle said. She said the new location had allowed HMC to offer better facilities, including “beautiful rooms for our contracted therapists’’. “It has also enabled us to support MS and Parkinson’s Canterbury in what they do for the

She said it was sad to think that so many clients and their families were going through difficult times but, on the other hand, was heartened to think her organisation could assist so many people.
Spreading spring joy Maddison Gourlay A garden full of daffodils turned into a pocket full of change the Peacock family were excited to give to charity. Peacock siblings Grace, 11, Abi, 10, Molly, 7 and Doug, 4, sold $74 of daffodils to raise funds for the Cancer Society and the youth counselling Gumboot Friday charity at the weekend. “I asked the kids if they wanted to sell the daffodils for pocket money, and it was completely their decision to raise money for these charities,” the chil-
dren’s mother, Sara Peacock, said. “They wanted to choose these two charities as someone close to us passed from cancer, and someone we love would have benefited from the work Gumboot Friday is doing.” Peacock made a post on Facebook to inform the public that they had daffodils for sale. The public responded, with siblings selling bundles of daffodils for $2. Opening up the honesty box outside their house at 11am, the garden was almost out of daffodils by 4pm. “So many people put in more than $2, which was awesome,” Peacock said. “When the kids decided they wanted to raise money for these charities, I thought it was amazing.”

Mannequin gift from locals Malcolm Hopwood Retired farmers, Bob and Alan Johnston love giving to the community. Their gift of a mannequin baby to Ashburton Hospital is the latest in a long line of funding donations they’ve given to Mid Canterbury. The computerised mannequin, valued at more than $10,000, is used for training purposes alongside a teenage and adult mannequin that the hospital possesses. The brothers said it can be programmed to provide a variety of scenarios that doctors and nurses might face in an emergency situation. When they semi-retired from their family farm at Carew 13 years ago, Bob and Alan were left with some discretionary funding. They sold the farm and decided to invest their money locally. The concept of Advance Ashburton’s Community Foundation appealed to them where their gifts would be invested, grown and given back to Mid Canterbury. The brothers decided to give in three ways; provide scholarships for promising young medical students, direct their funding to current community needs, and do-
nate their money locally in their will. They have a scholarship fund which pays income every year to medical students in the district. “We started with one scholarship per year and now there are six, each paying around $3000 a year,” the brothers said. They also get involved in other community initiatives such as funding training equipment for Ashburton Hospital such as their latest gift, the mannequin. Another immediate need has been Kai for Kids. “We thought food for kids wouldn’t be needed in Ashburton but we’re hearing real stories of how it’s needed today,” Bob said. The brothers realised early they could not only leave a bequest but also do something in their lifetime. “We get real pleasure from seeing what our money is achieving today,” they said. They’ve challenged others to “see their money working while they’re still here.” Alan said the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation is about advancing Ashburton. “We want to see the foundation be successful for our district for the long-term,” he said. See this Saturday’s Guardian for an expanded feature story on Bob and Alan Johnston.

A&P Show uncertainty, again Heather Chalmers Ashburton A&P Show organisers are staying positive that the twoday event will go ahead, despite a repeat of last year’s uncertainty around Covid-19 alert levels. Show president Peter Stewart said that planning was under way and that event organisers could wait until two weeks before the show’s scheduled dates of October 29 and 30 before making a final call. Uncertainty around whether large gatherings would be allowed in time resulted in last year’s show being cancelled. “We’ve got no control over alert levels. “I would dearly love it to go ahead. “Hopefully it will do,” Stewart said. The community had indicated that they were strongly in support of the show. “We have had a number of site holders indicating that they plan to return. “Competitors are also keen to support the show.” It was also a great opportunity for both rural and urban parts of the community to come together. A full-participation show can only operate under Alert Level 1. The theme of this year’s show, selected by Stewart, is “showcasing primary sector industries in Mid Canterbury”. Stewart said that while Mid Canterbury’s primary industries
The community is keen to return to an Ashburton A&P Show, last held in 2019, if alert levels allow. were dominated by dairy and arable, the region also had New Zealand’s biggest commercial beef feedlot, a large apiary industry, as well as blackcurrants, potatoes and other horticultural production. “Mid Canterbury punches well above its weight in primary sector production.” Stewart said that following last year’s cancellation it held standalone competitions for show jumping, dog trials, alpacas and highland dancing. “We scaled it right back. “We are at the beck and call of covid alert levels. “But we are definitely planning to have a show.”
The show schedule of competition classes has been distributed to letterboxes throughout the district and entries are already coming in, association administrator Lucille Brown said. Most people can now enter online at www.ashburtonshow. co.nz or via showday.online. The official closing date for entries is October 1, but Brown said she was prepared to extend this, if necessary. Show jumping entries close on October 21 and some home produce competitions such as cut flowers, as well as pet entries and Tiny Tots are received on the day. The equestrian events and dog trials always attract a lot of en-
tries as Ashburton was part of a wider competition circuit for both sports. A new class is a pet parade for domestic pets. All pets must be handled by a child under 15 years of age, with prizes for best caged pet, toy dogs, large dogs and most unusual pet. A Tiny Tots show will also be held for boys and girls up to six months, 12 months, one to two years and two to four years. The show’s layout has been tweaked, with food outlets moved to the middle of the trade sites. The New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch is also
keen to return this year after cancelling in 2020 because of the financial risk of organising such a large event amid shifting alert levels. If it did need to cancel, its organisers, the Canterbury A&P Association, can access a $1 million loan from the Christchurch City Council. Christchurch show general manager Tracy Ahern said the past 18 months had been hard on everyone. “Our goal, as guardians of the park, is to bring our community the best show yet; with children and families being our focus, it’s a unique opportunity for town and country to come together.”

Jarman issues the challenge Ashburton-based 2021 FMG Young Farmer of the Year winner Jake Jarman is encouraging others to challenge themselves and their mates by entering the competition’s qualifying rounds which start on October 9. Sixteen district contests will be held across the country over October and November to select eight of the best competitors in each of the New Zealand Young Farmers’ seven regions. Seven regional finals will be held early next year, where the winner from each will proceed to the grand final to battle it out for the 2022 FMG Young Farmer of the Year title in Whangarei, in July. District contests are hosted by an NZYF Club and involve half a day of practical challenges. The Aorangi North District contest will be held on October 9 and Aorangi south on October 30. The Tasman South District contest is on October 16 and Tasman North on October 30. A first-time competitor, Jarman initially signed up to the contest to give it a go last year. “I saw it as a case of I’ve got nothing to lose so I’ll get stuck in, instead of being a spectator and watching all the other competitors have all the fun.” An ANZ relationship associate in Ashburton, Jake won the Taranaki Manawatu regional final and represented the region at the grand final in Christchurch in July,

eventually bringing the title home. As a former dairy farmer and researcher for Dairy Trust Taranaki, Jarman said he completely failed the wool module in his first taste of the district contest. “I definitely walked away having learnt a thing or two, including how to put the lid of a beehive on properly on the top, not the bottom,” he laughed. His advice to all NZYF members was to grab a mate, sign up for the district contest and personally challenge each other to see who will do better. “Districts are a lot more low-key so the competition would be within all of our members’ skill sets and I’d encourage everyone to give it a go. “You’re not going to embarrass yourself and if you don’t know about something you will get taught on the day, so at least you walk away from the day having learnt something like I did,” Jarman said. New Zealand Young Farmers board chairman Kent Weir said he would love to see more member participation in the district contests to support the clubs who volunteer their time and energy to convene the competition. “This is the perfect time to enter yourself, your clubmates, your workmates and even your partners into the district contests to have a bit of fun and earn a cold one at the

end of the day. “It’s a good opportunity to not just test yourself and benchmark yourself against your peers, but a chance to meet new people, connect with the community, potentially learn a thing or two and get off the
farm and socialise with others in the industry,” Weir said. FMG Young Farmer of the Year is an iconic contest which began in 1969 and showcases the best of the country’s agriculture, food and fibre sector.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re attracted to people and things for a reason, though sometimes not a good one, or at least not good enough to warrant further action. True wisdom is knowing what’s worth pursuing. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You will work up a lot of energy and put it into the thing you desire. Is it industriousness, manifestation or magic? Whatever you call it, it’s a recipe that’s bringing you what you want. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Don’t forget the power of anticipation. The more a person waits for something, the more he or she wants it. A very effective way to hold attention is in the style of a dangling carrot. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You could give them what they want straight away. Then they will expect that every time. This kind of stability builds trust. Sometimes trust is what’s needed; other times, surprise is the key element. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): No one is born knowing how to handle this world and get along with people. All of the behaviours have to be learned. Your open mind and forgiving heart will keep you perpetually learning. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There are those who think that only a fool responds to problems without critical thought. What you know is that sometimes, relying on your unthinking response is the wisest move you can make. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s such a thing as too much structure. Uptight scenes could use a playful, disruptive force. Your childlike impulses may surprise them at first but will prove to be a force for good. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Your social instincts are on point. You know when to get serious and when to lighten the mood. Deep connections can be (and often are) made out of a string of lighthearted moments. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Whatever you are going through, you know that others are in the same boat. And still, others are in a sinking ship, envying your boat or seeing it as their rescue. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You are part of the brew, the magic element that makes it sing, in fact. So, the successes of the group are also your successes, and you will do well to celebrate with all the pride of ownership. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your patience will be tested, if not your temper, but you’ve much more self-control than the forces that bear. People see how well you handle yourself, and you’ll rise in the esteem of a key player. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ve a talent for sharing the right thing. You’ll teach someone a skill or value that doesn’t seem like a big deal to you, though it has life-changing potential.

A bit of light relief and a bouquet T
ime to start the week with some tongue in cheek light relief, courtesy of a reader. It’s called: I got a letter from Nana. Dear Billy The other day I went up to our local Christian bookstore and saw a: “Honk if you love Jesus’’ bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I’d just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did, because what an uplifting experience that followed. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn’t no-
Daryl Holden tice that the light had changed. It’s a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus. While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed: “For the love of God. Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, Go!’’ What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus. Then everyone started honking. I just leaned out my
window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. I saw a guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a good luck sign from someone in Australia. Well, I have never met anyone from Australia, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back. My grandson burst out laughing. Why, even he was enjoying this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of
their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but that’s when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection. What a wonderful, uplifting experience.
And another thing… It’s true that the Government’s Covid-19 response and performance hasn’t been faultless, especially around the much-maligned vaccination rollout. But our mortality rate and case numbers have been up with the best anywhere. We should never forget that and right now perhaps it’s time we lightened up on our Cov-
id leaders just a bit, and that includes yours truly. It’s important to recognise that people are doing their best, and there’s no playbook for this. This is new for everyone on the planet, a pandemic like we’ve never experienced before. And in the past few weeks, Health Minister Chris Hipkins and director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield have often looked exhausted, almost sullen at most of the updates. That should be no surprise because I can’t imagine what their days and nights are like, how they are coping under a national spotlight. Yes, they’re paid the big bucks, but they’re also human and doing their best. We should never lose sight of that.

The Black Caps have beaten Bangladesh by 52 runs in the third T20 international in Dhaka. Bangladesh lead the five match series 2-1. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first New Zealand made 128 for five. The top order all scored runs with Finn Allen making 15, Rachin Ravindra 20 and Will Young 20, while the tourists finished their innings strongly with Henry Nicholls unbeaten on 36 and Tom Blundell unbeaten on 30. In reply the homeside was bowled out for just 76 with Ajaz Patel taking four wickets and fellow spinner Cole McConchie three. Patel was named man of the match. “As a spinner you thrive on conditions like this, and you have to take a bit of responsibility in these conditions to try and make sure that you can do something for your team,” Patel said. “It was nice to get a few up top, and I thought all of our bowlers bowled brilliantly. I thought we bowled really well as a collective all together and our spinners did a great job.” Captain Tom Latham was happy with the way his side responded after losing the first two games. “It was obviously a really good performance, the way we were able to build partnerships with the bat, even though we lost quite a few wickets up front. “Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell were able to build a partnership and get us to probably a par score. “Then obviously the job the bowlers did with the ball and the powerplay to take wickets up front, we knew it was going to be tough towards the back end, and the bowlers did a fantastic job. “So, pleasing to take the learnings from game one and two and bring it into this game.” Game four is on Wednesday.

Warriors save the worst till last
More time under their own posts for the Warriors.
The Warriors crashed to a new low on Sunday, held scoreless for the first time this season. Already out of top eight contention, they have succumbed to their heaviest defeat of 2021, going down 44-0 to the Titans in their final round match on the Gold Coast. It is the Titans’ biggest ever win in the NRL. The Warriors turned in an error-strewn first 40 minutes to trail 16-0 at the break, before the match descended into farce in the second half. They were forced to play with 10 men after Jazz Tevaga, Matt Lodge and Kane Evans were sent to the sin bin when tempers boiled over. The result secures Gold Coast the final
place in the top eight for the first time in five years, at the expense of the Cronulla Sharks. The Titans will face the Roosters in the first week of the finals. The Warriors should have scored just 60 seconds into the match, but second-rower Euan Aitken spilled the ball over the line. That was the closest they got to crossing the line in the first half as they frequently coughed up possession, completing just 10 of their 17 sets. The Titans took full advantage, with fullback Jayden Campbell, hooker Mitch Rein and interchange back-rower David Fifita all scoring tries to give the Gold
Coast a 16-0 halftime lead. They needed to win by 11 or more to claim eighth place. Fifita scored his second try just two minutes into the second half to extend the lead to 22 points and stamp out any hope of a Warriors’ comeback. It was his 17th try of the season. Tempers then flared in the second half with Tevaga, Lodge and Evans sin-binned after two melees in as many minutes. Titans front-rower Jarrod Wallace was also binned for escalating the second scuffle. Titans front-rower Moeaki Fotuaika dotted down for their eighth unanswered try in the 79th minute.

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action
Flirting with authority Matt Markham John Hay is quite happy to have been proven wrong by his latest acquisition, Adieu Flirt. Asked by former Mid Canterbury trainer, Graham Bond, to take on the nearly 80-start mare a few months ago, he’d hoped they might have been able to eke out a win of her as she approaches what should be the twilight days of her racing career. Now he’s faced with the quite nice dilemma of having lined the mare up three times from his stable, and all three occasions have netted victories – the most recent on Friday night at Addington in a very good grade of pacing mares. “It’s been a bit of a surprise,” he said. “You don’t get horses that have had that many starts and expect them to come out and win them in a row, but that’s what she’s done. It’s never happened to me before, that’s for sure.” After beginning her career with Bond in Mid Canterbury, Adieu Flirt found her way to the North Island, where she raced for a number of seasons in the stable of Jay Abernethy. With her owner due to head back to Perth at some point in the near future, Hay was approached to take over the training, and he decided to take a stab in the dark and see what happened. “She’d had five or six weeks off before she got here, so we just worked her up slowly and every day she changed, around the stables she’s now just the nicest horses to do anything with, which makes it even easier.” She won first-up in August for his stable – a surprise considering she hadn’t had a trial or a workout. “Her work at home had been great, but they kept cancelling the trials here at Ashburton, so we went to the races instead and

Methven at Methven
In a surprise move from Harness Racing New Zealand, irrelevant of what Alert Level the rest of New Zealand finds itself in this weekend, the Methven Trotting Club will get to race at their home venue. HRNZ confirmed publicly over the weekend that the first grass track meeting of the new season would indeed be held at the Methven venue, and not at Addington Raceway as first thought.
Opportunity taken Rakaia horseman Gerard O’Reilly made the most of his first steer on classy trotting mare Vacation Hill on Friday night to win the Basil Dean Trotting Free-For-All, downing outstanding trotter Sundees Son in the process. O’Reilly, who is now doing the bulk of the driving for astute horseman Kevin Townley, has picked up the drive this season, and with a sweet run in transit on Friday, burst up the passing lane to win impressively.
More on the horizon
Adieu Flirt clears out to win again for John Hay at Addington on Friday night.

“It’s been a dream start, but it gets hard now because she becomes trickier to place as she gets up in the ratings, but she’s going that well that we will have to find something for her somewhere.” There’s no one reason Hay can pinpoint the turnaround in form for the mare, but so often a change in environment and an altering in the training routine can bring out the best in a horse, and that could very easily explain the return to form for the daughter of Courage Under Fire. She’s set to be one part of a good spring racing team that Hay will step out over the coming months including interme-
diate grade pacers, Yossi and Just Wondering – the former of whom has placed twice in two starts back from a spell. “They’re nice horses, but they are in trouble in the ratings too. “It’s just really hard on those nice horses in the middle of the pack, they’re not given too many opportunities.” Friday night’s win by Adieu Flirt took Hay to within striking distance of another milestone in his illustrious career, with 600 training wins just around the corner. He’s currently on 593 training wins, a nice figure to sit alongside the 1114 driving wins. And there’s plenty more in store too.
she was very good winning.” She then grabbed a dead-heat victory at Oamaru a week later, giving Carter Dalgety a winning drive in his first-ever race day drive, and had to so coming wide on the home bend on a quick last half. “I was surprised again that day considering how wide she was, it was a huge performance.” Then on Friday night at Addington, she took on a strong field of mares and led from the outset and never looked back, running a slick time to win comfortably – netting $11,000 in stake money in the process. From her three starts from the Hay barn, Adieu Flirt has now won close to $20,000.
Evergreen nine-year-old trotting gelding Beyond The Horizon notched up the sixth win of his career for local trainers Lynn and Justin Smith on Sunday at the Ashburton Trotting Club meeting when winning the Ian Lochead Memorial at Addington. The son of Monarchy, who has been a model of consistency in recent months, stepped quickly and found the trail before dashing up the lane to win strongly. From his 81 starts, he’s won six times and placed on 24 occasions, for close to $70,000 in stake earnings.
Smith combo grab another Husband and wife training duo Sarah and Matt Smith made it two wins within a week on their own home track yesterday. After winning with Splendior last Wednesday, the local stable lined up Dioradelle yesterday, and she backed up from her excellent second to win emphatically for jockey Corey Campbell. Off the pace yesterday, Dioradelle was angled into the clear at the top of the straight and wound up beautifully to win comfortably. Adding to the joy of the training win was the fact that the Smith’s also own the daughter of Perfectly Ready.
ASHBURTON
Smiley Kylie dominates early card The early stages of yesterday’s Ashburton Racing Club meeting belonged to one person – Kylie Williams. Four races down on the programme and Williams had a record that even the great Frankie Dettori would have been proud of, as she’d won three races and finished second in the other – continuing a great run of recent form on the Mid Canterbury track. After winning doubles at the two previous meetings at Ashburton, Williams started yesterday with wins on board Original
Gangster and then Cutting Edge – leading throughout with both to win nicely. She was then second with Allasera in the third, before saluting again with the very exciting Art De Triomphe in the fourth race of the day for former local trainer, Andrew Carston. Williams wasn’t finished for the day either. She finished a close second with Top Guy during the middle of the day and was then fourth with Scarfi as well. . As well as Williams’ efforts in the saddle,
other notable performances in the day outside of her winners came from the exciting Maximus Prime, who made it three wins from five starts for John Blackadder, and then Miss Tycoon Rose was sublime winning the open handicap sprint event as well for the Pitman team. Local jockey, Jason Laking was also in on the action, winning with Street Fightin Man for Steven Woodsford, then delivering a great front-running ride on Winter Cup winner Tappy’s One to make it two wins for the day.

$30,000 worth of materials to benefit female players
Celtic’s women’s rugby players will be greeted with new changing facilities when they begin their season next year, thanks to a nationwide programme between Bunnings and New Zealand Rugby. And news of its imminent arrival last week put the icing on top of the cake of what has been an exceptional year for the Ashburton Celtic Rugby Club, who celebrated their centennial and also claimed local rugby supremacy by winning the Watters Cup. “It’s just a fantastic end to what has been an incredible year for us,” president, Darion Gray said. “The club is so buoyant at the moment after such a great 2021, and to get this particular news, we are just so thrilled and can’t wait to get on with the work.” A third of New Zealand rugby clubs applied for the scheme, which set aside $300,000 to push into community rugby at the grassroots level. The Celtic club will receive $30,000 worth of materials from Bunnings, with their application focused on offering a much more suitable area for the women players from within the club and those visiting to play matches. The material will go towards installing shower and bathroom facilities for their growing women’s teams, with the club having experienced demand on their facilities in recent years. The new facilities will help considerably to cater for female players and support the continued growth of women’s rugby in the area.

New cricket nets
New outdoor cricket training nets are to be installed at the Ashburton Domain to help continue to grow and prosper the game in Mid Canterbury. The new set-up, which will include four separate wickets, has been slowed by lockdown, but hopes are that they will be completed by the end of the month, with the cricket season just around the corner.
Twilight tennis returns Entries for this year’s Mid Canterbury Tennis Twilight Tennis competition are open, with strict limitation to how many teams the competition can host. A total of 28 teams will be accepted for the hugely popular competition, which begins in October and runs through until March next year and is held on Wednesday nights. Teams are of three players with a maximum of two men with entry forms available at www.midcanterburytennis.co.nz

“There have been times when it’s been a little tricky to cater for everyone if we’ve had a big day at the club with lots of teams,” Gray said. “We have been very fortunate in being able to use the Celtic Squash Club’s rooms as an option, but this will help us considerably with creating a better environment for our women’s teams, both before and after the matches.” Work will be done on what was the Ashburton Boxing Club’s rooms in the southeast corner of the grounds at Celtic, after it was gifted to the Celtic club following the boxing club going into recess.
It has been used as a makeshift changing area, but there are no shower or toilet facilities in the building. “We plan to have that all installed in there now and to make it a complete changing facility, which is fantastic news, and the hope is that we will have it all up and running by the start of the next rugby season.” Ross Donaldson, who oversaw work done to the clubrooms prior to the centennial earlier this year, will again lead the project, with the club hopeful it will be able to call on many of its players and supporters with specific trade skills to help complete the job.
Mid Canterbury Hockey’s prizegiving and awards evening for Division 1 and 2 and Kwik Sticks, which was set to be held this weekend, will no longer go ahead. Due to alert levels and a limit on the number of people able to attend, Mid Canterbury Hockey said it was impossible to hold an event of that nature. A plan to complete the Division 1 and 2 season has been devised subject to alert level changes.
Major bowls tournament Ashburton is set to host the Clubs NZ South Island Women’s Fours tournament next month which will bring, alert level dependent, 180 players from across the South Island into town for the week. Play for the event, which will be split over four greens, two at Ashburton and one each at Allenton and Hampstead, begins on Monday, October 18 with section play, which will be completed on Wednesday, October 20, and then post section play on the Thursday and finals on the Friday.
MULTI-SPORT
Solid seventh in Challenge Roth Matt Markham It wasn’t the result he was after, but Braden Currie’s journey to Europe has netted in another big result. The multisport athlete, who one week ago was in Slovakia competing for the International Team at the inaugural Collins Cup, lined up in Germany on the weekend in the illustrious Challenge Roth event, with high expectations on himself. A seventh placing from a strong field of competitors would be his lot, but there was plenty of Kiwi pride in the performance which saw him the first athlete from outside of Germany to make it to the finishing line. Currie, who left New Zealand during the middle of August, with no certain date on a return home to his family in Wanaka, was one of the first three athletes out of the water – again producing an outstanding swimming performance to be right in contention after the 3.8km swim.

Braden Currie. The 170km bike leg was where Currie started to lose touch with the leading pack – but a solid 42km run kept him within the top 10, as he again produced everything he could to get a high as possible result. On his social media accounts following the race, Currie spoke of the challenges that Roth introduced. “This was the hardest experi-

ence I have had racing,” he said. “But I had to keep going to the end to see if I could achieve something. Now I feel broken.” Currie now sits in limbo as he waits for news on when he might be able to return to New Zealand, with no MIQ spots being available. He should have been preparing for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii but it
has been postponed until early 2022. Earlier in the week, Currie’s wife Sally – who also acts as his manager – wrote to Sports Minister, Grant Robertson, seeking some explanation on the MIQ situation and just how some sporting codes are able to gain instant access when competing for their national team, but many athletes are not. “It is time you did something for the rest of the sports in New Zealand,” she wrote. “It is time that you came up with a clever way to allow these athletes, that represent New Zealand to do their jobs and inspire a national at the same time. “The world of sport in New Zealand is no longer restricted to the oval shaped ball and the big guys who wear black and white.” Currie received an official response yesterday, not from Robertson, but from his private secretary, Jack Lane, who played
very much a straight-laced line in his response. “Yes, some sports people and teams have been able to enter New Zealand,” he replied. “We have a group allocation system which is agreed several months in advance of international teams coming to New Zealand to compete, or returning New Zealand athletes coming back home. “This strictly limited group allocation is separate from the public MIQ system and is open to a number of disciplines and set criteria not limited to sports teams. “Minister Robertson does not make decisions on sports teams/ people entering New Zealand through this group allocation. “This decision is made by the Border Exception Ministers Group. “Only a small proportion of MIQ spaces are allocated through this process.”
