A wide range of education options When it comes to education, the Ashburton District offers a superb range of options for children from preschoolers through to those studying at tertiary level. At preschool level there are a range of education providers from kindergarten, playcentre, preschool centres, Montessori and a range of certified in-home care services. Over the years the number of preschool education centres has grown and each has its own special character and qualities. Families are now able to access childcare for children from their first few months through to ready for school. Each centre has its own special character and each is run by qualified staff who work with a child-centred philosophy. At primary level, the district’s schools range across urban and rural locations with some offering classes from Year 1 to 6 and others running through to Year 8. Over the years some of the district’s rural schools have merged with neighbouring schools, creating a strong education network across the rural sector. Those schools each have their own special character and while they may be rurally based, they ensure their students access all the opportunities available in urban Ashburton. The district also offers what could be a unique option – one rural school having ties to an urban school, Ashburton Bor-

Some of the district’s rural primary schools are sited in small villages – Hinds, Mayfield, Mt Somers-Springburn, Chertsey, Fairton, Lauriston, Methven Primary and Our Lady of the Snow, while others such as Dorie, Wakanui, Carew Peel Forest and Longbeach are in very rural locations. for choice with Tinwald, Hampstead, Netherby, Borough, Allenton, St Joseph’s and Ashburton Christian School. In some ways the district is unique in that it has schools with two campuses, that provide families with an opportunity to choose a rural or urban educational environment for their children. Ashburton Intermediate provides quality
education for students at Years 7 and 8, providing them with a solid stepping stone on to college education. And at college level, the district is well served with two schools, Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College. Schools across the district are well served by a bus network that ensures families can easily access their local school.

Mayfield School is a decile 7 co-educational state full primary school catering for new entrants to Year 8. At the end of 2018 our roll was 81 students. Our school motto is Striving High and we are underpinned by our HEART values. (Honesty, Enjoyment, Achievement, Respect and Trying your Best). Mayfield School is very much at the heart of the Mayfield community. We have five classrooms operating with small teacher-to-student ratios. We have a supportive board of trustees who fund an extra teacher and an active home and school committee who organises fundraising and social activities. We are proud of our recreational facilities which include three playgrounds, a
bike track, extensive playing fields, school gardens and a school farm. The school is well equipped with the latest information and communication technology which includes 1:1 devices for the senior class and laptops and iPads in the other classes. A special feature of our school is the six week clubs programme we run in Term 3. This involves staff, parents and community members sharing their interests and expertise to give the children meaningful and fun learning experiences. For more information about our wonderful school contact the principal, Richard Kidd. Email: principal@mayfieldschool.co.nz or visit our website: www. mayfieldschool.co.nz Advertising feature
