HOUSE TO HOME

AUTUMN/WINTER 2019

Designing your own home, then rolling up your sleeves to help make it happen takes special energy. It’s the sort of energy shown by our feature home owners Megan and Ilco Jansen. The Jansens’ spacious, Scandinavian-inspired home at Lake Hood is their dream home for this time of their lives – when their three children are busy enjoying the outdoors and when they are building their own business. They won’t want to miss a minute as their children grow and their new home provides a launching point for all. There is space, light and beauty at every corner. The home is special too, because Ilco’s brother was the builder. Family is clearly important. We hope you enjoy their story and the beautiful images that accompany it, for they are living the dream.

Opulence is back Here’s how Jo Skilling, design consultant for Colourplus, sees 2019: Maximalism has arrived! What now for minimalist interiors? The good news is, in the style stakes there’s room for all of us: Maximalists, minimalists and those of us sitting on the fence. It’s simply a matter of personal style. But do you really know yours? More than ever in 2019, interior style is about what you, as an individual, love and what works in your home. So maximalist or minimalist, the Colourplus team will have the style for you! Maximalism is: Lavish, bold excess. Maximalists don’t care for the defining lines between genres or styles.

A maximalist interior uses patterns and colour and texture together, (my favourite). Maximalism isn’t: hoarding or a relaxed approached to cleaning. It’s opulence not chaos and well executed (my favourite)! Think ornate wallpaper, metals, lacquer, elaborate lighting, sumptuous rugs, animal printed fabrics. Minimalism is: White surfaces, clean lines and a pared-back approach to furnishings in white or neutral tones. Minimalism isn’t: Austerity or spartanism. It’s about carefully choosing what’s necessary in an interior and paring back excess. Think polished concrete, Scandinavian-style furnishings, solitary well-chosen artworks (in white, black or grey).

Experts reveal 10 design trends for 2019 breakfast nooks, providing flexible seating and in some cases hidden storage.

By Megan McDonough Washington Post

The home remodelling and design platform Houzz recently released its annual forecast, derived from conversations with industry experts as well as trends spotted among its 40 million monthly users. It offers a snapshot of what we might see in stores, living rooms and Instagram feeds this year. We chatted with Houzz editor and writer Mitchell Parker and asked him to dig into this year’s projections. So before you pick up that paintbrush, take a look at the colours and styles the pros say will be big in 2019. The backsplash as a focal point: In 2019, home design professionals expect to see more full-height backsplashes that seamlessly stretch from the counter to the ceiling – behind floating shelves and range hoods – for a clean and cohesive look. This dramatic statement can create the illusion of additional surface area. Dark and moody colours throughout the home: Although Living Coral may be Pantone’s pick for colour of the year, Houzz predicts homeowners will lean toward darker and moodier colours, such as navy and forest green, in the new year. Colour experts say it is a reaction to white

Board-and-batten accents: The modern farmhouse style will continue to flourish in 2019 and spread to the exterior of the home, Houzz experts say. The white siding delivers a “homey look” and can provide texture and interest to an otherwise flat facade.

and bright hues that dominated the design world for the past several years. Destination tubs: Bubble bath fans, rejoice. As bathrooms shift from private, utilitarian spaces to open, spa-like environments, homeowners are focused on the accoutrements, including freestanding tubs. ‘Tuxedo’ kitchens: Although white kitchens have long reigned supreme, professionals are seeing a return to black in kitchen cabinets, range hoods and island accents. The colour can be edgy, chic and surprisingly practical for parents. “If you’ve got a house with dogs and kids, scuff marks on white kitchen cabinets are going to be a big problem. Black paint hides

a lot more,” Parker says. Expect to see a lot more “tuxedo” kitchens contrasting black with white walls, backsplashes and marble countertops. Glass-and-steel room dividers: Thanks to the popularity of open floor plans, statement-making partitions will continue to flourish in 2019. Thin metal-and-glass doors and walls offer the illusion of open space while still providing privacy, light and noise mitigation. Free-standing dining benches: Custom, built-in benching, while popular and convenient, can be expensive. Homeowners are instead opting for padded furniture benches as an affordable alternative. The multifunctional pieces are great for small

For all your building and landscape construction needs

Wood vanities: Houzz experts saw a resurgence of unpainted wooden vanities in 2018, and they predict it will only be amplified in 2019, with a turn toward reclaimed and light wood. A four-wall accent colour: Forget the accent wall; 2019 is all about the accent room. Instead of a bold-coloured feature wall, homeowners are opting to paint all the walls – even the trim and moulding – in one room a dramatic and bold colour. Popular colour choices include navy and forest green.

Bringing global styles to Ashburton Chris Redmond has been checking out furniture of the future at the Las Vegas Market recently. The legendary market embodies the American city’s colourful spirit and sense of discovery and is regarded as one of the premier gift and home markets, with continually changing exhibits and experiences. It was the first time Chris, owner of Redmonds Furnishing and Flooring, has been to the market; he was a guest of Danske Mobler, which supplies Stressless chairs and outdoor furniture to his Ashburton store. He said the big market was a permanent facility with 3700 exhibitors and attended by tens of thousands of people from all over the world. The Las Vegas location added to the excitement of the market for Chris and his family, “especially if you enjoy a bet or a show”. Furniture fairs are important for promoting new products, and new suppliers and buying groups can check out the latest international trends. Chris, who was part of a party of 12, also checked out the exhibits of their other suppliers like La-Z-Boy and bedding manufacturers. He says he is always on the lookout for saleable products that are not available in New Zealand. This year’s market had plenty to look at,

but Chris said the new Stressless chair range was the most interesting because it was accompanied by an augmented reality phone app – “you can choose your chair style and colour, then look at it in your house on your device”. The Las Vegas stop was followed by a visit to Vancouver, where Chris checked out

the stores of middle-to-high-end retailers Innovation, BoConcepts and Scan Designs. He said the store designs, displays and trends were inspirational. The stores deal with some of the same suppliers Redmonds uses out of China and Vietnam. They are also Stressless retailers. “Bringing the scale of the stores and the

income bracket of their clients back into perspective to suit our local market was challenging,” he said. “For example, the Innovation store sold furniture branded and styled by Aston Martin and Lamborghini. A carbon fibre Aston Martin dining table was $50,000 and they had sold five in the last 12 months.” Chris said Scan Designs was a store with more products akin to Redmonds’ customer range. Scan Designs has been in the homefurnishing business since 1976 and provide modern contemporary furniture. They have seven stores in British Columbia, Canada, and turn over $50 million a year.

The scents that invite you in Philippa Hanrahan’s house smells good. So good, some days, that people walking past on the street have been known to knock on the door and ask what it is that smells go good. Philippa sells Scentsy, a home fragrance delivery system that imparts whiffs of citrus, or floral, or cedar and many more in combinations with names like Amazon Rain, Cucumber Citrus or Sweet Pea and Vanilla. In fact there are 85 different scents available in the wax bars that melt in Scentsy warmers and 30 different laundry scents. If you’re worried about the open flames of scented candles or the tea lights that heat your old essential oil burner, then electric warmers are a great investment. Scentsy warmers range from $37 to $278 and come in a range of sizes, designs and colours. The warmer plates don’t get hot enough to burn or start a fire and operate at around blood temperature – you can comfortably touch the mini hot place. And there’s even a portable warmer that’s charged by USB and other warmers that plug straight into power sockets. The range also includes diffusers, cleaning products and body products.

Scentsy is sold via party plan (like Avon or Tupperware) and Philippa was introduced to the range a couple of years ago by Methven’s SallyAnn Kircher, one of the first Scentsy agents in New Zealand. The company has been operating in New Zealand since 2015 and has over 1000 consultants; there are over 100,000 consultants globally operating in 11 countries. Philippa says her most popular product is Black Raspberry Vanilla scent bars, followed by the washer whiffs bars of the same fragrance, followed by any one of the 80 products in the warmer range. Her personal favourite is ocean washer whiffs, though she loves all the citrus fragrances. The products are detailed in catalogues that come out twice a year and a new one is due on March 1. Scentsy, the company, was started by Americans Heidi and Orville Thompson in 2004. They started out mixing wax in slow cookers in a shipping container on a sheep farm in Idaho. Now they work from a massive office, manufacturing, warehouse and distribution space in the same town – making about 200,000 wax bars a day.

Living their dream at Lake Hood By Linda Clarke Megan and Ilco Jansen’s children happily confess they are, like the billboards say, living the dream at Lake Hood. Jett, 11, Quinn, 9, and Harper, who has just turned 5, often begin their days waterskiing on the calm waters of the man-made lake. Their front yard has, until recently, been a motorcycle park, with jumps, and when they want to chill out, they retire to their own den, with PlayStation, in their very new home. Megan and Ilco are creating an adult version of the dream, which started with a desire for more room for their busy family and has resulted in a spacious, Scandinavianinspired, easy-living home on Lake View Terrace, in Lake Hood’s lifestyle area. They are not quite living the dream yet though, with landscaping now the focus of their weekends and free time, but it is obvious the family and pet labrador Seven are in love with their Lake Hood lifestyle. The Jansens’ property is bounded by trees at the rear and by the main road leading into the lake proper. The land sits several metres higher than the road and gives the family private living as well as space for Ilco to eventually build a shed that will house the boat and, more importantly, the tools of his excavation business. continued next page

From P8 The four-bedroomed home, with office and two separate living areas, has been a family affair from the start with brother Gaby commissioned to be the builder. Megan said the family had previously been happy living in a huge 100-year-old villa on Middle Road, but they yearned for easy living in a low-maintenance home while their children grew up. They decided to build … after all, they had plenty of knowledge and experience to call on. Ilco has been in and around the building scene since he was 15, working with Gaby and his father Theo. He and Megan have also undertaken some decorating projects, so they were not short of ideas when it came to building from scratch. They also toured Queenstown and Arrowtown in search of building materials and styles they liked, then handed their vision over to Ashburton architect Johnnie Moore, along with their budget. It took just three drafts for their home to come to life on paper and it would be one with a high-pitched roof, big windows and cedar cladding – part Scandinavian, a little bit French, and one that would most definitely suit their Kiwi lifestyle. Megan said the focus was always going to be on light and space, with white colour tones and natural light from full length windows. “We wanted a build that was stylistically pure, meaning that you follow the same style throughout. The kitchen matches with the bathroom, rather than a whole lot of different styles and colours or wood tones. continued over page

From P9 The section size, rather than location, was important initially, she said. They found their 6000 square metre section at Lake Hood was great value for money, compared to other sections the same size in Ashburton. “We came out here for dinner one night and it was beautiful,” Megan recalls. The family was sold and Megan and Ilco, who first met at Lake Hood, made an offer. It seemed destined. With the builder sorted and the build under way by January, 2017, the family squeezed into a tiny rental while their dream home was under construction. Ilco dug the foundations and did the onsite excavations, including all the drains and soak holes. Then he handed over construction to Gaby and building partner Brent Smith; he remained as hands-on as he could, while running his own business. Megan, a teacher, and the childre,n would swing by on the way to Longbeach School and be excited by progress. The 380 sq m home was positioned to capture views towards the mountains and of the lake and new lake extension. They say the building process was not

stressful, no doubt due to the fact they had a family relationship with the builders! Ilco said the skillion ceilings (no roof cavity) and the flat roof sections caused the most head-scratching. Timing the weather just right to lay batynol on the flat areas also turned into a waiting game. The exterior of the house is Rockcote, a natural finish complemented by cedar cladding, a nod to the landscape. By April the roof was complete and Gaby and Brent turned their attentions to the interior, employing contractors to paint, plumb and wire. Scaffolding was definitely needed when the Keig brothers arrived to plaster the interior high pitches. The couple chose a palette of light colours, the main colour Double Sea Fog, and the neutral tones combine with the glass and warm tones to good effect and run throughout the living and bedroom areas. Polished concrete floors feature in the kitchen and dining areas, as well as the entrance and bathrooms. Carpet is used strategically, along with colours of contrast like grey, lush pink, black or white. The kitchen features a Eurostone benchtop that extends as a splashback up to the cupboards. drawers make an enjoyable workspace. Oak used in the kitchen and bathroom complements their furniture. Their oak table is from Early Settlers and the chairs and barstools are from Cintesi, a New Zealand design company based in Tauranga. The leather couches are from McKenzie Willis and the oak side table from Ken Wills in Timaru. Megan said they wanted limited window treatments, with a focus on function so they opted for Luxaflex roller blinds from ColourPlus. A huge stag’s head high on a wall in the main living area provides serious impact and a talking point. Ilco shot the red stag six years ago on a hunting trip with friends at the back of Te Moana Gorge. Interiors complete, they moved in on October 24, Harper’s fourth birthday. There is no under-floor heating and Megan said the home was toasty last winter, the concrete slabs acting as thermal stores. Outside is a work in progress. A barbecue area and solid timber outdoor table and chairs is already put to good use, accessed by a sliding door from the main living area and it has shelter from the wind – there will be a spa pool in time. The outdoor kitchen sits alongside a planting of

New Zealand ferns. The wide, impressive driveway leading up to the house was laid by Paveco Ashburton. The landscaping is Ilco’s department and the canvas now extends to the section in front of them, which they bought after the build started. The extra land will be kept in grass and Ilco plans to plant flaxes on the rail fence that is the roadside boundary. They have taken their cue from other plantings at the lake and want to fit in. The idea is for low-maintenance gardens and pop-up sprinkler irrigation around the house. The section is on town supply but they have included a water storage tank in their planning. Megan said the whole family was loving the benefits of living in a new home. “We did love our old villa, with all its character, but with a 100-year-old house you had to close the curtains to keep the heat in. “The new home is warm and the perfect mix of style and function. We love the uncomplicated lines and the fuss-free interior and the house looks amazing at night with the windows all lit up. “You can see the stars and the lights of other houses around the lake. This is easy living.”

Love it or list it? Devotees of television home renovation shows have been enjoying the new season of Love it or List it Australia, on Sky TV. Hosts Andrew Winter and Neale Whitaker have come to the aid of 13 Aussie families to help solve the dilemma, renovate or relocate. They tackle the problems faced by a retired NRL footie player whose family has outgrown its small home, the army major with itchy feet and a wife who refuses to budge, and empty nesters who are looking for a second stab at life. The series might be set in Australia, but the houses and the problems are similar to those faced by many Kiwis on this side of the Tasman. They see old homes that need a modern makeover to make their occupants happy. Andrew (Team List it) and Neale (Team Love it) combine to deal with tired interiors, crumbling exteriors, pokey layouts and relationships or lifestyles that need a shot in the arm.

Andrew Winter

Andrew lives and breathes real estate and he uses years of experience and property science to persuade home owners that moving is the answer – he always shows them some spectacular alternatives to their current home. Neale and his team have a bag full of building and design magic to wow property owners who have fallen out of love with their existing home. His jaw-dropping interior transformations aim to re-ignite the passion they once felt for their homes and convince them to stay by converting their current home into a place that works better for them. Andrew, a Brit who now calls Australia home, is a residential property expert with more than 25 years in the field. He also hosts Selling Houses Australia (Foxtel’s most popular non-sports programme and frequent award winner) and Tiny Houses Australia. He started his career in a real estate agency at the age of 17, he bought his first home at 18 and his experience includes working alongside Chartered Surveyors, selling properties in London’s famous Regents Park, West End and Canary Wharf. From rural to urban, historic to brand new, slow to buzzing markets, Andrew has experienced them all.

Advertorial

Wool carpets Wool carpets have been making a comeback in the flooring world recently. Although most of the carpet sold nowadays is solution dyed nylon, there are still many people who would rather have a wool carpet underfoot. There are many good reasons for this, firstly it is a natural fibre and renewable resource. It is also naturally fire retardant and naturally soil and stain resistant. It also helps manage humidity in the home by absorbing moisture. The main point to remember with wool carpets is that a good wool carpet is still a good wool carpet. However, this is

definitely an area where you get what you pay for. Textured carpets are where wools are really coming into their own. Currently there are a number of beautiful soft textured loop piles on the market. These go from the finer, more traditional sisal looking carpets to the luxurious chunky loops that feel gorgeous underfoot. These are available in a number of different looks and colours now from creams through to dark browns and greys. For many people tracking in carpet is something that really puts them off a cut pile nylon carpet. (Tracking is when the

Samples Available

pile flattens in a high traffic area.) Loop pile wool carpets are not as prone to this and is just another reason people choose wool. One final thing to remember with wool carpet vs nylon is that the weights are not necessarily comparable. Whereas a standard weight nylon carpet is around 32-34oz, an equivalent wool carpet would be around 40oz. (Carpet is still measured in terms of ounces per square yard!) So if you would like to know more about wool carpets and the benefits they can offer you and your family, come and see the friendly and experienced team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra.

Curtains and blinds Choosing new window furnishings can be a confusing exercise

with many options available. To help you out here is a quick run-down on some of the options. Curtains are still a very popular option, and still very practical for our cold Mid Canterbury winters. Well-made curtains with linings will ensure that the heat is kept in your home rather than escaping out the windows. There are a multitude of fabrics from which to choose, from lovely soft sheers to beautiful heavy linens, while also having fabrics with every budget in mind. Headings are no longer standard now either. These can be used to create a completely different look for a curtain. Roman blinds now are often used to open spaces up. They are made with curtain fabric which enables consistency in a room. These blinds are now able to be pulled up and down with a chain (much like a roller blind) which makes it a lot easier to control and keeps them a lot neater. Blinds have had a complete transformation over the past few years. In past years the everyday blind was a venetian with a standard width blade, but now blinds come in all shapes and styles to suit every budget. Venetians are still very popular but now come in varying blade widths and many different colours as well as several timber options. Another blind that has changed significantly over the years is the roller blind. Roller blinds today have a much wider range of colours and funky designs, and they also now have a variety of blinds for different functions. Sunscreen blinds are a very popular option to reduce the heat of the summer sun, but equally to block the glare of the low winter sun without blocking the light entirely.

Sun blinds can also be paired with either block-out blinds or curtains for privacy at night. Roller blinds can also now be automated (ie controlled by a remote). This option is great for windows that are very high or hard to access. So next time you are looking at curtains or blinds, come and see the friendly team at Skip-2-It Flooring Xtra.

Don’t be afraid of roses By Linda Clarke If you’re planning a new garden, or thinking about beautifying the patio, don’t be afraid to plant roses. Mid Canterbury rose lover Daphne Rissman has around 800 in her large country garden and she says they’re not difficult to grow and the resulting blooms are a gift from nature. Her biggest tip is to keep the water up to them and feed them well. Not all fertilisers are created equal, so choose wisely and remember that a little goes a long way. Daphne says this summer’s weather has been hard on her roses and the cold nights, heavy dews and hot daytime temperatures were ideal conditions for mildew. But she always manages to have a vase of freshly-cut flowers inside, the fragrances of the English varieties standing out. Daphne’s garden has grown over 20 years and it holds precious memories. She says the roses have become an addiction and quite possibly an obsession. She has no favourites though amongst the roses she has planted in complementary colour groupings. She says diseases are less likely if the rose is healthy. Watering, at the base of the plant not from above, is key. Growing roses in a container can be tricky because they don’t like to be hot, so consider moving containers out of direct sunlight. “Keep the roots cool and the water on it,” is Daphne’s advice. Some roses are also more susceptible to black spot, especially if they get under stress because of a lack of water. Spray if you need to and seek advice from the experts. Daphne belongs to the New Zealand Rose Society, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the world’s most favourite flower. District rose societies, the South Canterbury Rose Society in this neck of the woods, hold meetings, organise rose shows and pruning demonstrations, publish newsletters and arrange garden visits.

Path to success Roses, in the form of a living plant, are often given on special occasions – to celebrate a wedding, or anniversary or other milestone or remember a special person. Don’t panic if you’re not a big gardener … roses are not hard to care for and will bring happy memories for a long time to come. The experts say: – Water is the key to success, no matter where your rose is planted – A well-watered rose is less likely to be affected by disease, but if you do see black spot or aphids then invest in the right spray and deal to them – seek advice if you don’t know – If you choose a pot, choose a big one and use a good potting mix with slow-release fertiliser – Prune them in the winter, in an open vase-type shape

Set up with families in mind By Linda Clarke A massive 3.5-metre kitchen island is the stand-out feature of a new home just completed on Whiteoak Grove, in Tinwald. The island, finished with new-to-the market Euro edge formica, has room for bar stools on one side while the other backs on to a kitchen that features soft-to-close drawers, an induction cooking plate and wine rack. There is a separate butler’s pantry. The house is a project of Trident Homes and is about to hit the market, with all the hard jobs complete. The building company’s Ashburton operator Shaun Hurley said Whiteoak Grove, on the easy-access western side of Tinwald, was fast-gaining popularity as a great family street. The 230 square metre four-bedroomed home sits on a 719 sq m section that has a big backyard recently planted in grass. There is plenty of room for a good-sized backyard cricket wicket, while concrete areas leading off the dining area offer the perfect spot for a glass of wine in the sun. Shaun says the home was designed with busy families in mind. The section is lowmaintenance and the house insulated and warm in the winter and cool in the summer, thanks to two air-conditioning units. There’s no firewood needed here. continued over page

From P17 The outside is Canterbury Clay brick (the colour is Harewood) while the interior is painted Quarter Tea throughout, with alabaster trim. The double-glazed windows are in Grey Friars aluminium frames, the same colour as the roof. The whole house, and attached double garage, are insulated with pink batts. The flooring in the kitchen, laundry and entranceway is vinyl plank, the bathrooms have tiles and the living and sleeping quarters are carpeted in a Belgotex Empire carpet, called Bark. Shaun said the configuration was well suited to family life. The kitchen, dining and living areas were open plan, with a separate

lounge for kids or parents to escape to if needed. The bedrooms are large and the master has walk-in wardrobes and an ensuite. Night sensors light the hallway and are activated by movement. The only detail not sorted is window coverings and Shaun says that is being left to the new owners. He said the neutral colour theme had wide appeal and would suit most tastes, as well as going well with existing furniture. The home will go on the market soon at $585,000. “It’s a family home but it could also be bought by people looking for a rental investment. These days it can be cheaper to

build new than try to bring an older home up to the new rental standards.” New legislation that comes into force in July means ceiling and underfloor insulation will be compulsory in all rental homes. “We’ve tried to think of everything. It has four bedrooms, a big backyard and is low maintenance, there’s alfresco dining that is sheltered.” There is also plenty of storage and room in the laundry for washer and drier. He said Whiteoak Grove was not a busy street and the area was attracting more families, especially those wanting to upgrade from older homes. The fact people could mostly avoid traffic on State Highway 1 through Tinwald was also a winner.

HOUSE TO HOME

Protect your home By Linda Clarke Good locks and burglar alarms can combine effectively to deter and detect burglars. Sturdy locks on windows and doors, and sensor lights, are commonly the first line of defence but many Ashburton people who have been victims of a break-in are upping their security by adding electronic alarms and video surveillance. Electronic burglar alarms have been around for decades and detect intruders by strategically placed sensors on doors, windows and walls. Systems can be configured to sound audible sirens or, better still, send a silent alarm to a security firm. Dean Talbot, whose security company Talbot Security installs home alarms, says systems monitored by experts mean alarms are responded to immediately by people trained to cope with whatever they find. Monitored systems cost around $1 a day and there is an initial set up cost and subsequent charge per call-out. Dean says he is often phoned by burglary victims who want protection beyond locks. Almost all were distressed that their privacy had been invaded and property taken. He says people need to consider how much they want to spend and weigh it against their peace of mind.

How? Home security systems can be installed in any property from around $1400, an investment representing only a fraction of the home’s cost. Modern systems can be configured to account for pet movements and homeowners’ usual routines, and breaches can be investigated instantly. Dean says more alarm systems are being installed as they become more affordable and reliable. Whatever the system, police say it is important people trust the installer, get quotes and speak to friends and family for recommendations. Hartley Curd, of Masterguard Security Cameras, said video surveillance was an increasingly popular option for both rural and urban clients. These systems commonly used an app downloaded to a smartphone, which received an alert when a virtual boundary or line had been crossed. Clients had the option of choosing what happened next – they could arrange for security experts to investigate or phone police. Hartley said new technology meant systems could send an intruder alert but also notify when a smoke alarm was activated. He said there was an increasing trend, over 25 years in the business, for people wanting to feel safer in their homes.

Advice from police on how to protect your home: – Always lock up. Burglars often enter through unlocked doors and windows or they take advantage of weak locks. – Install good quality locks and use them. Check that you will be able to escape easily in a fire or other emergency. – Use a reputable locksmith. – Lock away tools and ladders because burglars could use them to break in. – Sensor lights are an excellent security device because they light up automatically if somebody moves nearby. – Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they don’t provide hiding places for burglars. – Keep windows secure. – Lock the front door if you’re in the back garden. – Guard your keys. Don’t have personal details on your keys (such as your name, phone number or address). Don’t leave house keys with your car keys when your car is being serviced. – Lock your house if you are having a rest or doing something that needs a lot of concentration, such as studying or sewing. – Don’t invite burglars in – never leave notes on a door stating that you are out. – Lock garden sheds and your garage if you can. – When you go away, make sure your home looks ‘lived in’.

Cut down on energy costs Renovating for health and comfort Renovating over autumn is a chance to express your personality and make your home look great. It’s also an opportunity to make your home comfortable, warm and dry so you are ready for winter. Christian Hoerning from EECA Energywise says do it once and do it right, and you’ll enjoy the benefits straight away and well into the future.

A dry home is a healthy home Mould is a problem in many Kiwi homes and renovating is the perfect time to sort this issue. Put powerful externally-vented extractor fans in wet, steamy areas of the home, such as kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. Don’t vent into the ceiling space - it’s bad for your house and your health, and it is not compliant with the Building Code. Check for rising damp under the house. Check that all the vents are open and put down a ground moisture barrier to stop damp rising into your house.

Be clever and reduce your home’s running costs The systems you use in your home can have a big impact on your home’s running costs. For example each old-fashioned light bulb you replace with an energy-efficient LED will save you about $20 a year, including the cost of the bulb. Hot water makes up about 30 per cent of a household power bill so it’s worth getting an efficient shower head and considering the best option water heater for your household. Home renovation means you may be buying new appliances. To find the most

Build a better future

energy efficient appliances check out www. rightware.govt.nz to avoid buying power hungry appliances. Christian suggests including a HomeFit (HomeFit.org.nz) check as part of your renovation planning. It’s a free, online tool which will tell you if your home is warm, safe and dry and suggest improvements. For more information: www.energywise.govt.nz

The best street in Ashburton By Linda Clarke Just 18 months ago, floodwaters ran almost knee-deep down Charlesworth Drive after a rain bomb unleashed 140mm on Ashburton. This month, the Ashburton Horticultural Society judged it the best street in Ashburton. The street has transformed into a scenic thoroughfare over the years and horticultural society judges were impressed. One of the first residents of Charlesworth Drive, part of the Lochlea subdivision, was Cynthia Young. She and husband Robin Ford moved into No 2 five years ago when there were just a few houses between Racecourse Road and Hanrahan Street. Now there are no empty sections with the last new build getting under way just a couple of weeks ago. Cynthia said it was a beautiful street where residents took pride in their gardens. It also had a great neighbourly feel, with residents watching out for each other. “All the gardens look nice, and plants and trees are starting to look mature,” she said. Cynthia looks after both the gardens and

lawns at her house, jobs she enjoys. On her daily walk, she appreciates other well-tended gardens … and some that would benefit from a little TLC. Good-looking streets with cared-for gardens helped created an overall good picture for the town, she said. Charlesworth Drive residents were delighted by the fact they were now officially the best street. “The people who live here are extremely proud because they love doing it and they get so much enjoyment out of doing it and keeping them look good.” Many road-side lawns and gardens on Charlesworth Drive were under water when almost 140mm of rain fell over two days in July, 2017. Floodwaters flowed down the street, which has residential homes on one side and the Lochlea Lifestyle Resort on the other. The best street last year was Reighton Drive. The horticultural society awarded the Best Floral display this year to 15 Balmoral Place, the Best Lawn to 3 Filey Place, Best Special Feature to hanging baskets at 67 Cox Street, and Best Cul De Sac to Coniston Drive.

Sprinklers can help you survive By Linda Clarke People building new homes or undertaking major renovations should consider installing sprinklers inside their home, says Fire and Emergency’s Ashburton fire risk management officer Bevan Findlay. Home sprinklers were an especially good option for people living in rural areas, where it could take firefighters longer to respond, he said. While home sprinklers do not necessarily extinguish fires, they increase survivability for people and limit damage. Bevan said there were a lot of myths about home sprinklers, in that they were expensive and ugly. But he said home systems did not cost as much as a commercial sprinkler systems and typically added around $2000 to the plumbers’ bill when included in a new build or renovation. “Mid Canterbury is a huge area. In my job, I drive around and I see the travel times and so if you live well away it could be half an hour before the fire appliances can get there and begin putting out flames.” Research shows smoke alarms and home sprinklers in tandem increase survivability, giving people a longer time to escape. The alarms give early warning and the sprinklers protect property – a sprinkler head activated at 100°C after a fire has been building for

HOUSE TO HOME

around three minutes could stop it spreading to the rest of the house. “It can be the difference between a rubbish bin fire in one room and a house that is a pile of ashes.” Home sprinkler systems use the house’s domestic water supply and are governed by a national standard. Sprinkler heads can be as small as 7cm and sit flush in the ceiling. Sprinkler heads are activated by heat, not smoke, and go off one at a time starting with the one closest to the fire. Bevan said that unlike in the movies, the whole system did not go off if heat was detected in just one area. He said 90 per cent of fatal fires started in the kitchen, lounge and bedroom. Most victims are asleep at the time and it is usually found they did not have smoke alarms that would have alerted them to the danger and given them a few minutes to escape. Smoke alarms, therefore, remain an important safety message for Fire and Emergency NZ. There are two types, ionisation and photoelectric. Long-life photoelectric alarms, which last around 10 years, are best because tests have shown they detect smoke and fire sooner. They usually come with long-life batteries, which last the life of the alarm. Some photoelectric alarms still use replaceable 9V batteries, so make sure you know the difference. All alarms beep when their battery is low. Bevan said the photoelectric alarms can cost around $20 each and the fire service could offer free advice about where they should be placed. The service also offers free installation for people who have bought alarms: Just ring 0800 NZ FIRE (0800 693 473). He said smoke alarms in the right place were important. “You don’t put one in the kitchen or bathroom as it will go off every time you open the oven or have a hot shower, and so then there’s the temptation to take the battery out.”
