You could also add some compost and lime to the soil of your vege garden. If the soil is quite wet, wait until it has dried out a bit. If you haven’t planted your shallots and garlic yet you’ve still got time – but get them in quick! Planning on planting potatoes? Get your soil ready by digging it over and adding some lime.

If you're not going to plant any winter veges and you want to improve the quality of your garden bed, try planting a cover crop like lucerne or mustard. These plants will help provide a natural fertiliser for your soil by adding nitrogen. When spring comes simply dig in the plants to your soil.
If you think your vege garden could do with some improving. July is a great time to take it to the ‘next level’. A raised vege garden makes it easier for your plants to grow (because you can fill it with good quality potting mix, compost and or mulch) and it makes it easier for you to garden (there’s less need to dig over like you would with a regular garden bed, and it’s higher off the ground so less bending and backbreaking required). You can use something like old railway sleepers to build your garden higher or try building some planter boxes like the ones pictured. Once you’ve finished your raised vegetable and herb garden, fill it with quality potting mix, compost and/or mulch – basically any good garden feed you’ve got. Then replant it with Awapuni seedlings like spinach and broccoli. If you have compost you should be turning it over around now. Keep your compost covered to protect it from the heavy winter rain by using a sheet of polythene or some old corrugated iron. Add some lime – to stop it smelling – and some blood and bone to give it fertiliser. Your herbaceous perennials will probably have gone dormant (no leaves) by now, so dig them up, split the plants apart and replant them – great for expanding your garden. Even if they are still flowering, it’s still fine to split them at this time. Rake the leaves off your lawn and spray the lawn for weeds – do it now while the sun isn’t hot and it won’t burn the grass off. Lastly, make sure you deadhead your annuals – like polyanthus and primulas – so they don’t get mushy in the middle.

Winter proof your house with insulation By Nadine Porter So you’ve enjoyed the balmy Mid Canterbury weather this summer, and the even balmier autumn weather. And now the early winter chill is setting in and the task you set yourself of making your home warmer looms ominously. Now is the time to get into action and to winter proof those cold nooks and crannies that threaten to ruin your cosy family life. But where to start? What should you do to make this a reality? Many older Mid Canterbury homes were built without insulation and this is the single biggest change you can make to your property to gain that winter warmth you desire. And if you are worried about financing insulation, there are avenues available for you to gain subsidies and discounts. It's estimated as many as 600,000 New Zealand houses have insufficient ceiling or underfloor insulation, and insulation can move or become less effective over time. Good quality, well installed insulation helps keep the heat in during winter and keep it out during summer. This makes your house easier and cheaper to heat properly, and more comfortable and healthy to live in. The order of priority for insulating your home should be: 1.Ceiling 2.Underfloor 3.Walls 4.Windows But before you spend money on insulation make sure you sort out draughts. Seal around doors and windows, block off unused chimneys and remove down lights that are not rated 'close abutted' (down lights with air gaps around them). Don’t fall into the trap though of
not letting any ventilation into your house. You still need to let some air in to prevent damp accumulating and to maintain air quality. Even on the coldest nights you will need some fresh air in the house. There is a fine line between draughts and ventilation. CEILING INSULATION
Ceiling insulation is generally the easiest, cheapest and most effective insulation to install in your home. It's a great place to start making your home warm, comfortable and healthy to live in. Hot air rises, so for most homes making them easier and cheaper to heat properly starts with good ceiling insulation. Fortunately, ceiling insulation is relatively easy to install in houses with accessible roof spaces. UNDERFLOOR INSULATION
Underfloor insulation is one of the first things to consider in most existing houses to make them warmer, healthier and more comfortable - and in homes with accessible underfloor spaces, it's relatively cheap and easy to do. WALL INSULATION
Wall insulation is not easy to check or install, but it makes a big difference to the comfort and warmth of your home. Once you've insulated your ceiling and underfloor, installing wall insulation is the next most effective step for reducing heat loss in your home. It's difficult to check and install wall insulation in existing houses without taking the lining or cladding off, so take the opportunity to do it if you're renovating. WINDOW INSULATION

especially if you already have well insulated ceilings, floors and walls. One way to minimise this heat loss is by providing insulation for your windows.

About S.E.E.D.S S.E.E.D.S is a free programme where a family is matched with an experienced and trained volunteer parent support worker 00431012to teach them various parenting and home skills in a one-on-one situation in their home environment. The worker is trained to pass on practical household skills to help you, as a parent, to feel more confident, learn helpful parenting tips, and to reduce stress about the day-to-day activities of parenting, as well as other practical skills for use in the home. These can include skills such as parenting routines, time management, coping with stress, child health and well-being, nutrition, menu planning, cooking and baking, budgeting, sewing and garment repairs, housekeeping and hygiene. Participants can set their own goals and work towards them with their volunteer over a period of three months. The service is confidential and nonjudgmental, and aimed at parents with preschool aged children.
Become a volunteer The S.E.E.D.S programme is always seeking new parent support workers. Our ideal volunteers are practical, open-minded, warm, empathetic and have a good sense of humor. If you have raised children of your own, know how to bake or sew, and know how to make your money stretch when times are tight, we'd love to talk to you.
