flourishing in your garden at home. To get started, simply pop down to your local supermarket, The Warehouse or Bunnings and pick up some of our Traditional Value onion seedlings. Or head to our online store at www.awapuni.co.nz and get them delivered direct to your door. I bet the traditionalists among you will go for the Pukekohe Longkeeper with its brown skin and white flesh. This variety is known for its resistance to bolting, and ability to be stored for a long time. Our Longkeeper does best in soil that’s friable – by that I mean soil that goes crumbly when you touch it. To start growing, dig a hole about 3cm deep and plant your first seedling. Plant each subsequent seedling 10cm away from its neighbour in rows
If it’s pickled onions you’re after, you’ll likely get your hands on some pearl drop seedlings. This pure white cocktail onion has crisp, round and slightly flattened bulbs. It also has thin skin that can be rubbed off straight after harvesting. I always advise people to choose soil that’s rich, and in an area with full sun. After planting, simply keep the soil moist and this low maintenance variety will grow up to 4cm in diameter, and to a height of 45cm. You’ll know it’s ready to harvest when the tips of its leaves begin to turn brown. If you like to spice up your salads or stir fries, you’ll no doubt choose the red spring onion with its bright red attractive stalks and mild, sweet taste, or the more traditional green spring onion. These can be planted anywhere you have space – even in a simple pot on the veranda. Plant each seedling 3 to 4cm apart, and in six to eight weeks your spring onions should reach a height of 70-75cm and be ready to harvest. I like to pop new seedlings into the ground every month for a year-round, continuous supply. Salad and sandwich lovers may also go for the striking red onion (or purple onion as I think it should really be called). Simply follow my planting instructions for the Pukekohe Longkeeper, and in five to six months you’ll have some home-grown, flavourfilled goodness in your hot little hands. Good things are worth waiting for, right?

Setting up your perfect home office By Nadine Porter Having a well set up home office can significantly increase the value of your house particularly with so many of us working from home. But how do you set up the perfect space and arrange it so that it is clutter free and makes best advantage of the space you have. Follow these constructive tips and hopefully you will end up with an inviting invigorating space that makes working at home a breeze! Although you may already have
a room you are currently using as an office, consider all your rooms carefully and then decide which would be the best to maximize your productivity. Most importantly, don’t treat your working space as second class accommodation. Remember, you and your family will spend a lot of time in this room so consider using a bigger room you don’t utilize well currently. A formal dining room could be a perfect option. Good lighting is not only key to being able to see but studies have also shown a well lit room leads to higher productivity levels. When choosing your room remember to think of the advantage of having a sunny space and ensure the entire room is well lit, especially if you are working at night. Be
sure to budget for additional sources of light – the brighter a workspace is the more inviting it becomes. Just think how much difference some cheerful lamps could make during those long winter months. The first furniture consideration should always be where to place the office desk and what kind of desk that will be. These days many stand up desks are popular but if that isn’t what you’re keen on than consider a corner desk. If you go for this option be sure to utilise the corner space behind the monitor by putting your printer there. Desk size and shape will depend on how large or small your room is so think carefully and research the options available. Once you’ve chosen your desk be sure to put in some task lighting over the areas where you will spend most of the time working.
Again it helps to enliven the environment. The office chair is crucial yet often overlooked. You need to avoid hard kitchen chairs and instead shop for an ergonomically correct office chair. Stay away from the boring blue and black coloured chairs and think friendly. A pattern or bold colour can add more light. Remember your desk and your chair are as important as a bed and don’t be afraid to spend on them. Storage is king so whatever you think you need, triple it. Home offices are easily cluttered and often your children’s school projects get interlaced with your own work. Mess is depressing. Add shelves above your desk and a hutch that sits on your desk. A large bookcase and open cubby holes plus attractive storage boxes for bits and bobs that look messy out in the open all promise to be conducive to productivity. Think technology and jack points. Many an office is set up before this is considered causing a complete re-organisation. Save yourself the hassle and check this out first. Get some greenery. Plants have been shown to de-stress an environment and add a freshness that invigorates. Finally be sure to add the personal touches. Photographs, mementos and pictures that amuse or inspire you can transform your working space into a comforting relaxing area. All of it conspires to make the office a haven within the home and a place where much work gets done with less hassle!
