Carpets So you need to replace your well-worn carpet – but where do you start? With so many colour and texture variations, finding the floor covering that best matches your needs can be like finding a needle in a haystack. But with some preparation and careful consideration that choice could be considerably easier and painless for you and your family. Firstly you need to consider the style of carpet you require - for

example do you want a plush carpet that promises to be soft and inviting? This option works well as long as you don’t have young children or little footprints, as even vacuum tracks show up vividly. Plush carpet can also look multi-coloured due to areas that look shaded because the normal direction of fibres have been reversed. For durability Berber carpeting is hard to beat. With its continuous fibre loops and flat, dense make-up, it hides stains and footprints well. Choice of carpet texture will often come down to the room it is going to be laid in. High traffic areas suit Berber carpets whereas formal rooms not used often could have a plusher finish. Once you’ve worked out what kind of feel you want your carpet to have set a budget and stick to it. Wool carpets might represent the best in quality

but they also come with a higher price tag whereas nylon and other synthetics feel similar to wool but cost a lot less. Don’t be afraid to shop around, and make sure to request separate pricing for materials and installation so you can make a direct comparison to other suppliers. Remember to haggle! If they want your business they will often meet you in the middle. Even a five percent discount can equate to a significant cost cut. Make sure you factor maintenance costs into your budget. A new carpet doesn’t necessarily look new for long if it isn’t maintained well. So if you have a tiny terror, or a furball for a pet, you may opt for stain resistant carpets to eliminate future headaches. It will also cut your cleaning time. When shopping around be sure to ask about cleaning and maintenance on all the carpets you’re interested in. It’s important to understand how to clean and what products the manufacturer recommends. Choosing the correct colour shade can be tricky depending on what atmosphere you want to create.

Golden and red shades ooze comfort while greens and blues radiate a peaceful setting. Keep in mind darker colours can make a room feel smaller. Many new houses are often carpeted in neutral colours but this should only be an option if you want your carpet to fade into the background. However, if you have a significant artwork or furniture you wish to show off than neutral will help to highlight it. Patterned, textured and dark coloured carpets all serve to hide stains better. Whatever you choose, make sure to take a large sample home, and examine it in your room’s natural light. Just as clothing can look different from what you choose in a catalogue, so can carpet look different in another environment. If you are a keen recycler you may wish to choose a carpet based on its impact on the environment. Check the recycled content percentage before you buy, keeping in mind that many nylon and synthetic carpets are made from mainly fossil fuel byproducts. Some carpets have been made from recycled water bottles. Underlay is equally important to your final decisions as it conceals imperfections in your floor and acts as insulation. Made from rubber and foam, underlay can significantly lengthen your carpet’s lifetime so don’t be tempted to scrimp on the costs involved in underlay. Finally, make sure you weigh up any warranties offered with the product, but don’t over-emphasise this in your final decisions as many warranties offer little in true coverage and most carpet complaints stem from improper installation as opposed to manufacturing defects.
