Christmas is forever, not for just one day. For loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away.
INSPIRED BY NATURE Incorporating nature into Christmas decorating is the way to go. There’s still a place for tinsel and baubles, but immerse these with pine cones, twigs and bark-like textures for a contemporary and welcoming look. Natural ornaments to hang on the tree, as well as wooden candle-holders and lanterns, complete the look.
BLUE CHRISTMAS Green, red and gold may be the traditional colours and will always be evident but this year blue has joined the party. Think deep midnight blues, aquamarine hues and ceruleans as both main and accent colours. The result brings a touch of whimsy and glamour to the festive scenes.
PATTERNS ADD INTEREST Dots and lines make a big impact. Herringbone is by far the front-runner, but polka dots (of any size) and other line patterns help add to the vibe you want to create. This trend can be incorporated in a minor way (eg table runners, greeting cards) or a major way (eg large table centrepiece, blankets).
LIGHTS EVERYWHERE Candles and Christmas tree lights are a big part of the festive season every year, but this year, lights get a makeover. Lighting displays will be a huge attraction and Christmas ornaments lit up from within stand to become 2019 favourites. The emergence of warm golden light that we’ve seen in the recent past continues to grow.
TREAT ALL THE SENSES Christmas is a smorgasbord for every sense. Creating a visual buffet is as much a part of the preparations as the Christmas Day lunch. Play with textures to draw interest and make this a special time of year. Sound, smell, touch and taste can all be engaged by using the trends noted here to have a holiday wonderland.

Some great recipes this festive season It’s that time of the year where our thoughts turn to what we’re going to serve up to guests, both at Christmas and the days before and after. So Guardian staff (and their families and friends) are offering up their family favourite recipes for Christmas. CUCUMBER IN SOUR CREAM
HELENE DU MEZ-ROBERTSON
INGREDIENTS • 3 cucumbers • 3 med onions • 1/2 t salt • 2T castor sugar • 1C cream – soured using 2T lemon juice • 1 1/2 t vinegar (I use cider vinegar) • 1/4 C chopped fresh dill
ROCKY ROAD INGREDIENTS • 350g chocolate (quality) • 2T melted butter • 1 tin condensed milk • 300gm chopped marshmallows • 1 pkt chopped glacé cherries (red) • 2C dry-roasted peanuts (no flavourings, not salted)
METHOD 1. Peel and very finely slice cucumbers. 2. Place in a bowl and sprinkle with salt. Leave to sweat. 3. In another bowl, sour the cream using lemon juice. 4. Finely slice onions. 5. Drain cucumbers in a sieve, pressing them down to remove excess liquid. 6. Return to bowl and mix in onions. 7. Beat cream with the sugar and vinegar.
METHOD 1. Melt chocolate (I find it easiest to melt in the microwave), add butter and condensed milk and mix until combined. 2. Add in all dry ingredients. Mix until well combined again. 3. Spread out as evenly as possible in a large, lined brownie-type tin. Chill in fridge until set. Cut into whatever sizes suit.
8. Once thickened mix through cucumber, onion mix and dill. 9. Put in a bowl to serve. 10. It is great with green beans and chicken.

CHRISTMAS MOVIE TRIVIA Print out some questions about your favourite Christmas movies, then split your guests into teams and test your knowledge of classics like A Christmas Story, Elf, Home Alone and of course Die Hard movies.
SNOWBALL THROW No, this is not a traditional snowball fight like you might have done as a kid. This one involves a person tossing marshmallows to fellow team members, aiming for his or her mouth. The team gains a point every time.

When the call goes out for the Ashburton Guardian’s Elderly Wishes each year, there’s no shortage of people putting their hands up to help. Our way of trying to help give back to the community which we serve, Elderly Wishes aren’t about presents, or good food and relaxation, instead they’re about doing that little bit for someone who needs help and helping make their festive season as enjoyable as it possibly can be.
