Living well with dementia Dementia Canterbury is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a range of services in Ashburton, Christchurch, North Canterbury, the West Coast and Kaikoura such as groups, social work support and education. Dementia Canterbury aims to assist people with dementia to live fulfilling lives and has a focus on “living well”. Dementia is the umbrella term for a number of brain conditions that cause a progressive decline in cognition and functioning. The most common type of dementia is alzheimers disease which makes up 50 to 70 per cent of dementia cases. There are well over 70 different types of dementia. Some of the most common types include vascular dementia (which can be caused by a stroke), Lewy Body and frontotemporal dementia. Everyone who has dementia is unique and symptoms can vary greatly. Functions that can be affected are memory, communication, behaviour, language, perception and judgement. Anyone who is worried about noticeable changes in their memory or other related symptoms are recommended to have a conversation with their GP. This ensures that any other possible causes of these changes can be ruled out or treated.

If dementia is diagnosed a GP may discuss medication options. As part of the National Dementia Framework, medical practitioners are guided by The Cognitive Impairment Health Pathway which provides recommended referral options such as Dementia Canterbury and Older Person’s Health Services. In Ashburton, Dementia Canterbury offers support from a social worker and monthly groups, including a group for

people with dementia, a carer support group for the main carer, and a social outing group for the person with dementia and their family member. This year Dementia Canterbury is providing two education seminars locally, the first Talk Dementia with a Doctor is already fully subscribed. The next seminar to be held later in the year, will also host a guest speaker and focus on a different topic. All services are provided free of charge

and the organisation relies heavily on fundraising, volunteers and the generosity of New Zealanders. The organisation is always on the look out for volunteers who may like to visit with a person who has dementia on a weekly or fortnightly basis for companionship. Arthritis aid and Try the latest circulation booster hearing technology Ten years ago a worried wife from the Kaptit Coast found a way of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain and stiffness. She created a device she called the Aircycle. Arthritis carers were so impressed with the relief and increased joint mobility this man experienced, along with the amazing improvement in his circulation, they asked for Aircycles to be made available to other sufferers. This small, soft circulation booster allows gentle movement while watching TV, sitting at an office desk, in the car or plane. A great gift, it’s so easy and something anyone can do no matter what age or fitness level. It’s been shown by hospitals, rest homes, diabetes clinics, podiatrists and physiotherapists to be helpful for a variety of circulatory and joint problems in hands, shoulders, feet and legs and lower back. The exercises also help strengthen muscles for improved balance and mobility. Sometimes the least expensive and simple ideas, like the Aircycle, prove to be the best.

Worried about your hearing? Try the latest discreet hearing technology at House of Hearing. House of Hearing is offering you the chance to try the very latest in discreet, German designed hearing technology. ADVERTISING FEATURE Saturday, May 26, 2018 Ashburton Guardian

You’ll find resident focused care Resident-focused care is all about planning each resident’s care to meet their individual needs. We acknowledge that not everybody is the same and it is our absolute passion to ensure we find the activities that re-ignite our residents’ interests and backgrounds and return the sparkle to eyes lost through dementia. We provide the tools and activities that enable our residents to revisit past activities and skills thus encouraging the recovery of lost abilities. Princes Court’s beautiful gardens have plenty of space to provide activities such as a mini golf course, a car to wash and polish, a push lawn mower, leaves to rake, a car engine to pull apart grease and oil, two raised vegetable gardens plus a variety of places to just sit and relax. We also have access to a working farm for our residents to visit and assist with shifting sheep: an activity that many of them are familiar with. As well as our residents, our families are a very important part of our focus. We have this year started a Family Support Group. The group is convened by the wife of one of our residents and meets monthly. They share a lunch and share their stories with each other. One of many things that they have found is that they are all on the same journey but at different stages.

Princes Court’s Family Support Group is available to anyone to join; you do not have to have a loved one at Princes Court. If you are struggling at home caring for a loved one with dementia or know of someone who is, we encourage you

to call us and join our Family Support Group. Whilst you share and receive support in this wonderful group the staff at Princes Court will take care of your loved one, allowing you some time out without worries.

Please phone 03 308 0302 and ask for Deborah who will happily provide you with more information. Here are Kathryn’s words about the support group ... “As the partner of a recent resident in Princes Court, I was struggling with guilt and grief and felt very alone and upset by the turn our lives had taken. Then I received an invitation to attend the Carers Support meeting at Greenvale House, the offices of Princes Court. It was great to realise I was not alone after all, suddenly I was with people who were on the same journey as me, albeit at different stages. We meet approximately once a month for a shared lunch and to share our stories and I find the time flies. We talk and laugh, occasionally shed a tear and always come away feeling supported. We are husbands, wives, sons and daughters of dementia sufferers and we welcome anyone who is travelling the same path as us. I personally have been helped to reach acceptance and to shed the guilt of not being able to manage my loved one at home any longer.” At Princes Court it is not just about putting life in those years of our residents; it is also about providing support for their family too. We are all on the same journey.
