The Waihi experience Timaru Girls’ So is Waihi the place for your son? When we ask current and past parents, “Why Waihi?” for their sons, the list of responses is diverse – small class sizes; broad and holistic curriculum; great technology; male teachers; sport/music for all; wonderful environment; excellent facilities; high academic standards; boarding opportunity; values; manners; aspirations ... However, the key point of difference, the thing that is mentioned the most by parents, and is at the centre of everything we do – is that Waihi is a school designed for boys! So what does it look like ...
In the classroom
Specialist science lessons; differentiated learning; small streamed maths groups; focus on literacy (Waihi boys love reading); an inquiry-learning approach; hands on practical subjects such as robotics, music, drama, visual art, craft, wood technology; a one-to-one iPad programme.
Outside the classroom
Focus on physical activities, PE, outdoor education, swimming, cross-country and athletics; everybody plays team sports for the school; all boys sing and can learn an instrument; annual school production.
House competitions
All boys are in one of four ‘houses’. They compete throughout the year in sporting and non-sporting competitions, including all major team sports, debating, chess, general knowledge, speeches.
Service
All boys are encouraged to undertake some service and leadership activity, particularly in the final two years. This may include sports coaching and mentoring; librarianship; ‘big brother’ work with younger boys; or even being on the famous Waihi mowing squad. We invite you to come and see for yourself why Waihi really is a school designed for boys.
Timaru Girls’ High School has been educating young women in South Canterbury for 138 years. It takes this role in our community very seriously and is constantly looking for ways to blend a fresh, relevant, girl focused learning approach, while still maintaining the importance of the culture and traditions of the past. Timaru Girls’ are achieving outstanding academic results throughout the senior school. In 2017 91 per cent of Year 11 students achieved Level 1, 88 per cent of Year 12 students achieved Level 2 and 91 per cent of Year 13 students achieved Level 3. We are proud of these results and see them as the culmination of a focused approach in supporting each individual student from a dedicated staff. In 2018 a new classroom block and gym refurbishment was completed. These new facilities are part of stage one of a masterplan to modernise the school and to allow flexible, student focussed learning to occur. Along with the park-like grounds, Timaru Girls’ is a traditional school in the context of contemporary facilities designed to meet the needs of young women. The Timaru Girls’ High School Hostel has undergone significant renovation in the past three years. This has been as a result of a growth numbers of students in recent years. In 2019 places are still available but it
will be important to register interest to secure a space. Numbers are close to the limits in some year levels. Please book to make a time to come and visit and have a look at the new facilities.
