Local ownership gives a special edge When it comes to going the extra mile in business, you can’t beat a company that is locally owned and operated. That’s one of the hallmarks of the Ashburton business community, so much so, that locally owned and operated is almost a district byword. Walk into most businesses and you’re likely to be greeted by a familiar face. Chances are that familiar face belongs to the person who owns the business. Local ownership gives a busi-
ness a special edge, it means the people you choose to spend your money with have the same commitment to our district that you do. It’s their home, it’s the place they have chosen to raise a family and it’s the place they have chosen to establish a business, to make a living. Many of Ashburton’s locally owned and operated businesses can also boast a link with the district that spans several generations. Some names have been proudly displayed above the
door for decades. Strong, thriving, locally owned businesses are nutured by owners who go the extra mile for their customers by providing the first class service that establishes a solid reputation that in turn builds a loyal customer base. Locally owned businesses and their customers have a relationship that is built on trust and a shared commitment to their community, the place they all call home. Locally owned and operated busi-
nesses, however, would never thrive without a commitment from customers to shop locally. Every time business is taken out of town, dollars seep out of the local economy. Online shopping is here to stay, but it will never offer personal service, the opportunity to touch or view the goods you are buying and most of all, it will never provide the opportunity to share your business experience with a fellow local. You can’t beat the satisfaction of doing business with a local – just like you.

Tasty treats the traditional way Sims’ Bakery Ask anyone from Ashburton where to find Sims’ Bakery and they will tell you “it’s over the bridge on the Main Road in Tinwald”. Brian (Manny) Sim is a third generation baker based in Mid Canterbury. His grandfather, a skilled baker, emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in the late 1890s. Living originally in the North Canterbury region, Grandpappy Sim moved on to reside in Methven where he established a bakehouse. During the 1930s and 1940s, two of his sons, Stuart and Arthur ran their bakery business Sim Bros Ltd from Hinds. After a parting of the ways for the two brothers, Arthur (Brian’s father) moved his Hinds business into Tinwald, on the southern side of Ashburton. From this site, Sim’s Bakery has operated since 1960 and
has become an institution to the people of Mid Canterbury. Locally owned and operated, the bakery is everything you could look for. Remember walking into the door of a bakery and buying old-fashioned homemade bread. That’s just the experience you get when you pop into Sims’ Bakery. Tasty, soft bread inside a yummy crust. You can also find delicious pies topped to the brim with a yummy filling. Slices, slabs, pizza, quiche and other speciality convenience dishes are also available and all just taste sensational! Need a sandwich? Look no further, they have them too! And for your sweet tooth, indulge with their cakes, biscuits and other tasty slices. Call in to Sims’ Bakery, you won’t regret it!

Back the community KFC
KFC Ashburton has been locally owned and operated for 27 years. Local residents Carol and Garry Haskett first purchased the fast food franchise in early 1991 running it themselves with a small team of 18. Today it is one of six remaining KFC outlets independently owned and operated and is among the busiest stores in New Zealand. Over the years the local franchise has achieved many milestones and accomplishments. A new two storey restaurant was built on the East Street site in late 2009. The franchise has achieved GOLD ratings from KFC International for its facilities and operational excellence over the years. Operations manager, Brad Haskett is very proud of the achievements and credits the success to the dedicated staff and management over the years. Today the business employs over 40 who carry out the challenging and complex day-to-day operations and attributes its ongoing success to the support of its customers and fans of the Colonel’s famous original recipe chicken.
It is this support that has allowed us to give back to the community, sponsoring numerous events, fundraisers, sports teams and local
community initiatives. As for that world famous chicken? The secret herbs and spices still remain a secret!
The fresh chicken continues to be delivered daily and prepared on site by kitchen staff ... and it’s still Finger Lickin Good!
Good on ya, Robbie!

From soil to oil Totally Kiwi and Fourflax Animal Health
Totally Kiwi is a local family owned and operated business producing premium quality flax seed oils. The family has been involved in the production of New Zealand grown and produced flax seed oil for over 28 years and is proud of their product traceability. Totally Kiwi is involved in every step of the production process, from product growth, through to processing, packaging and on to the shelves in store, to ensure total control and quality assurance. Our gourmet oils are rich in omega 3, an essential fatty acid vital for our overall health and wellbeing. Essential fatty acids cannot be made in the body itself, so must be obtained through the diet or dietary supplements. Omega 3 is naturally antiinflammatory within the body – with its high Omega 3 content, flax seed oil has long been renowned as a healthy oil with proven benefits for your skin, joint and heart health. Totally Kiwi oils are all gluten, dairy and GMO free.
The oils are suitable for vegetarians and vegans and offer a great Omega 3 alternative to fish oils. With no artificial flavours, additives, preservatives, colours or chemical residues, you can rest assured you are buying a premium quality local product. Simply drizzle these oils over cooked meats, roast vegetables and salads, or toss through stir-frys, pasta and rice. Also a great addition to casseroles and soups for warm Winter meals! Sister company to Totally Kiwi is Fourflax Animal Health. Owned and operated by the same family members, Fourflax is an established animal health supplier. Fourflax has been manufacturing and distributing premium quality animal health supplements across New Zealand and the globe for several years now, using cold-pressed and locally grown flax seed products as the core ingredient. Each product is formulated using only the best of science and nature, with key ingredients offering proven health benefits to our animals.
Their brand, ProVida, offers a complete collection of natural wellness supplements for cats, dogs and horses. ProVida products are results driven, palatable and easy to use ‌ and all New Zealand made too! ProVida has a product for every concern, whether your pet has dry and itchy skin, stiff joints & restricted mobility, or digestive and bowel upsets, these products provide significant health and wellness benefits. As a business, Fourflax are passionate about the health and wellbeing of all animals, and as such are proud supporters of Orana Wildlife Park and Hamilton Zoo.
Flax seed oil is sent to the zoos on a monthly basis and is added to the daily meals for the spider monkeys, cheetah, lemurs, gibbons, giraffes and chimpanzees! Fourflax is also proud to sponsor a team of experienced horse riders, including local Ashburton sisters, Kimberley and Jaimee Bird. So, next time your pet drives you mad with itching and scratching, or struggles to get moving in the morning, then look no further for your locally made, natural pet health supplements! Experts in motor homes and caravans Lifestyle Motorhomes This local family business is a jewel in Ashburton’s business crown. This busy intensive professional operation employs a raft of tradesmen to repair, maintain, refurbish and rebuild motor homes, caravans and fifth wheel vehicles. When you think about it, you require engineers and coach builders for the chassis and body work when mounting everything from diesel heaters to water tanks to bike racks. Then you require carpenters and joiners for the woodwork and joinery repairs and upgrades, when replacing everything from rotten timber, damaged panelling to upgrading your bench and table tops. You also require an upholsterer when retrimming walls and ceilings, replacing your squabs, carpet or even your vinyl flooring. Fibreglass experts, water proofers and interior painters are also required for all those insurance repairs. And so it goes on with electricians and auto electricians for installing your 12 volt charging systems like solar panels, equaliser chargers and batteries. Then there’s plumbers and gas fitting experts who are all required to install
fixtures and fittings that make these homes on wheels comfortable and 100 per cent conform to the ever-growing list of regulations. Lifestyle Motorhomes can upgrade, test and certify your electrical systems, your gas system and even complete and certify your plumbing and selfcontainment. Lifestyle can do it all inhouse which is why customers travel from far and wide to utilise their knowledge and skills. I met with Murray McPherson the founder and director of this fantastic enterprise who took me on a tour of the site where row after row of motor homes and caravans stand in various states of rebuild, refurbishment and repair. Murray and Marg have been in this industry for nearly 30 years and it is a labour of love as they work with their team and family in this busy Ashburton workshop. Murray, Marg and their team of professionals have put Ashburton on the Map for NZ motor home owners. They are proud to be local and serve nationally.

Memory Funerals
Flowers and Balloons
When a life has sadly ended, we need to mourn the passing and celebrate the life that was and make sure that the person lives on in loved ones memories. Jo Metcalf is a local fresh thinking funeral director, who is here to help you with the whole process. Born and bred in Canterbury, Jo lives in Ashburton and has been organising funerals for the past ten years. Jo opened Memory Funerals to offer people a choice in funeral care in their time of need and to cater to the needs that reflect the personality, culture and uniqueness of the individual. Taking an unhurried approach, Jo listens, giving people an opportunity to ask questions, share thoughts and help create a tribute to the person who has meant so much to them. By taking the time to listen Jo can create funeral arrangements to suit each individual, including having treasured possessions adorning the casket and personal items that
capture the life that was. Memory Funerals are opposite New World on Moore Street and are beautifully furnished with a welcoming reception area. Being locally owned means no pressure and visitors can feel free to pop in for an informal chat and a cup of tea or coffee. Jo is a great believer in preplanning your own funeral, so you can talk to her about the details and have real input into the day and arrangements. From intimate private services in Memory Funerals Chapel to larger gatherings at a venue of your choice or anything else in between Jo is ready to help.
Quality, innovation, sincerity and value are the hallmarks of Memory Funerals. Small enough to listen, big enough to deliver 18-22 Moore Street, Ashburton Free Phone 0800 263 6679 Mobile 027 637 1229 www.memoryfunerals.nz

New owners, fresh focus Delivering power Plains Power
Fresh and White Fresh and White Limited is a business under significant change. Formerly Ashburton Drycleaners and Laundry Services the business is under new ownership and is being refocused for a significant and healthy future in Ashburton. Owner/Director, David Wyness and his partner, Irina Openko, moved from Auckland in March of this year to take over the business. In that short time there has been a significant recalibration of the business ethos, production capacity, and geographic reach. With new clients in Timaru, Christchurch and Lincoln the business is re-equipping for the next stage in its commercial life. Previously owned by long time operator Murray Lister, the business has and continues to service a wide variety of clients in a broad range of commercial and retail sectors. That will not change although the level and type of services offered are being recalibrated through improved technology and laundry equipment. New RFID technology for tracking
linen has recently been installed and is in the process of roll out. In addition, early in August, new larger washing machines and dryers are being installed and the hunt is on for a new roller ironer. A new vehicle has hit the road with bright new livery, and internally the production area is being reconfigured. “Laundering is not rocket science, but increasingly there needs to be customer focused customisation. That’s our new focus – customised laundry services!” say its excited new owners. “We needed to invest heavily in recalibrating to allow this new focus”. David, who has 15 years’ experience in the laundry industry, has been particularly impressed with the staff of seven who keep the daily business on track. “They know their stuff! Hopefully we’ll be able to give them a sound long term future and a new sense of direction! And personally, Irina and I are loving the Mid Canterbury lifestyle!”
Plains Power is Ashburton’s only locally owned and operated power company. The How – We buy power from the same place and at the same price as all the larger retailers. We have aligned ourselves with a company which provides the necessary platforms and compliance requirements to be able to participate in the highly regulated electricity market. Our business is purely buying and selling power along with customer relations. The Why – Along with many others, we believe the electricity market is changing for the better. Technology allows smaller players like us to offer competitive pricing and solutions to our existing and new customers. By being small it means we have a lot lower overheads than the billion-dollar corporates we are competing against and this is passed through to our customers in pricing. Nevertheless it is a very competitive market and at times it comes down to being 1 or 2 cents
cheaper per unit of power, but when multiplied 10,000 times every year equates to reasonable savings for our customers. Our Philosophy – Our main aims are to have transparent pricing and to give back to our community. With regard to pricing we endeavour to pass all service type charges through at cost. The two reasons for this are, it’s quite simply easier for our reconciliation process but also it shows a true reflection of how electricity prices are made up for the end user. Community is a huge part of our business also, currently your corporate retailers take their $100 million dollar profits and distribute to shareholders. We want to re-invest in local people, sports and community groups and are already have local organisations involved. Our new customers are encouraged to nominate a club or organisation and once they meet our community criteria, we will implement ongoing sponsorship.
Proudly locally owned and operated.

My background includes 13 years in the banking industry, working mostly in the agribusiness sector with both Partnership and Corporate entities. Whilst this role is relatively new for me, I cannot believe the positive response and uptake from the Mid Canterbury public with new customers coming in every day.
Here at Plains Power we only operate in the Mid Canterbury area, so we are dedicated to you and understand the market. There’s no call centre or being put on hold when you need an answer, you speak directly to us. We are a local business supporting the local community.

Your one-stop-tyre shop Neumanns Tyres
The façade and buildings might be new, but Neumanns Tyres is a company with a long history keen to honour its humble origins and proud to be locally owned and operated. Len and Kath Neumann started the family business in 1945, working hard to make it a success. It was a work ethic passed on to their sons, who played amongst the tyres and did small jobs for their parents as boys. As adults, they have grown the Ashburton operation 10-fold and added interests in tyre sales and servicing outlets around the South Island. Alan and Ian have worked a combined total of over 70 years in the business, a trade they were born into. Neumanns has won awards for its support and service to the rural community. The company is proud of its history and has loyal customers and staff because of its family rather than corporate philosophy. Its unwavering motto is to fit the right tyre, on the right rim, at the right pressure, at the right price, doing the
right job. A long-term vision is to keep family members involved in the business, keeping it locally owned and operated, while providing life-time jobs for long-serving and loyal staff. The company’s staff is what makes the business special. Neumanns’ operations have grown over the years meaning greater buying power with their suppliers, and in
turn, offering discounts to valued customers. Neumanns bought a Tyre General retail outlet in Christchurch, Amberley and a tyre retreading plant in Christchurch, purchased and set up a Tyre General outlet in Temuka and Washdyke and went on to have interests in Invercargill, Cromwell, Alexandra, Motueka, Blenheim and Nelson through Tyre Retreaders.
Striking up long-lasting service relationships with major transport companies and contractors and becoming a supplier to the Ashburton Trading Society also helped keep the company trending upwards. Being involved in the community is also important for Neumanns Tyres. For all your tyre requirements, think Neumanns Tyres – they’ll take care of you.
