After leaving French Farm in 2014, downsizing to a much smaller garden was going to present a challenge. Firstly removing two large Phoenix Palms & countless seedling trees/shrubs. Then a major renovation & addition to the 1950’s house & Nancy started laying out her new garden. Rules we set were: no lawns, LYTTELTON no hedges & no prickly roses! We have broken some of these already!

The Kearney Rhodes House is so named from the first two women who owned the home. Anne Kearney, an Irish widow with 5 adult children built it in 1867 and May Rhodes used it in the 1930’s as a ‘maternity home’. Purchased to save in 2010 by Stephen Cashmore, Architectural and Interior Designer, the house has undergone a mixture of conservation, restoration and adaption to give new life to a place with much social significance to Akaroa. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see inside this historic property and view the restoration work.

Boutique a must-see

Olives are us

Established in 2004, Ça Bouge Boutique is a contemporary shopping space in heavenly Akaroa. A well-curated selection of streetwear and fashion-forward apparel for men and women awaits, plus the accessories to complete your look: sunglasses, shoes, hats, handbags, backpacks and jewellery. Even a range of divine bed-linen and candles! New season stock is arriving daily and with it, a fun take on the upcoming season: boho frocks in ultrabright florals, retro-inspired cuts, the romance of pin tucks and highbuttoned collars, boxy shirts and sporty shift dresses, floaty blouses, denim of all hues embroidered with inspirational messages, wide-leg, pegged-leg and glorious jewel-toned trousers; understated elegance and modern-cool; in beautiful fabrics of organic cotton, linen, silk and merino; flats and platforms, espadrilles, block and kitten heels and slides — Ça Bouge Boutique aims to delight their customers with a mix of the chic and unexpected.

The Old French Road Olive Grove is located on the outskirts of Akaroa, overlooking Takamatua Bay. The first olive trees were planted on the property in 2000 when it was under the ownership of Rob and Sue Cooper. Prior to this the land received little care and was riddled with gorse and broom. The grove is nestled in a valley of 20 acres with fresh water springs, ponds and native woods. We bought the Grove in 2011 and renamed it Old French Road after the track on which it is located. This was the route taken by early settlers travelling from Takamatua to Akaroa. Garry McFarlane, who has been involved in the establishment and maintenance of the grove from inception, has helped landscape the property with paths, ponds, terraces for the olive trees and native plantings. The valley has a northerly orientation and the sloping grounds make it almost frost free. The warmth and fertile soils ensure ideal growing conditions.

Aussies Amy and Shannon were in heaven!

Our main olive varieties are Frantoia, Manzanilla, Kalamata and Picholene which we harvest for both oil and table olives. All our oils are Olives NZ Certified. Olive oil is best consumed within one to two years of pressing. It will retain its fresh flavour for much longer if it is stored in dark coloured glass bottles in a cool place away from bright light. We protect our oil from the time it is processed by keeping it in stainless steel containers in a room maintained at a constant 16 degrees. Buy online www.akaroaolives.co.nz

The property is close to Akaroa’s walking trails, galleries, Jubilee Park and some of Akaroa’s top restaurants. Start your day with coffee and a croissant at a nearby café before swimming with dolphins on Akaroa Harbour or browsing the village’s boutiques. Your hosts Alex and Jane have over 20 years’ experience in hospitality and provide a range of well appointed rooms which all overlook a native garden and tranquil stream. Each room has its own private patio or balcony. This is the prefect place

Kate and Richie have relocated from Ashburton to Banks Peninsula and have set up this unique glamping experience on their 30has of working farmland. Te Wepu can be found in the historic French Farm Valley on the western side of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. Kate and Richie want you to have a special and unforgettable experience, so they’ll work with you to establish key details such as your arrival time (so the bath can be hot!) and whether you’ll be wanting one of Kate’s legendary Te Wepu hampers (hot tip: you do!). Each pod has its own private setting including wood fired hot tub (emptied, cleaned and refreshed after each guest), fire pit, WiFi, an ecofriendly waterless (and odourless) Bioloo, camping facilities including a gas barbecue, and delicious fresh spring water. The other pod is your utility pod which includes a composting bioloo, a high quality chilly bin, changing area with towels and bathrobes for your hot tub experience.

PHOTO ELISE RUTHERFORD PHOTOGRAPHY

And as described by a recent guest; “Wow! What a stunningly beautiful experience. The location is secluded and beautiful with breath-taking views. The pods are awesome and truly make glamping easy with all the facilities you need and the hosts are outstanding, adding the little touches that make you feel welcome and appreciated. If you’re looking for a secluded stylish private getaway, but close to places to visit, then this is a must! You’ll love it!” – Richard, Christchurch Book for your summer escape now at tewepu.co.nz
