Immaculate presentation 2 Magnolia Drive With A+ appeal, this is an incredible opportunity for you and your family to live the picture-perfect life. The kitchen is immaculate – spacious and incredibly easy on the eye and is well appointed being the hub of the open plan living area, it opens to a tiled patio area which has a calming water feature to enhance the outdoor living space. The hallway flows to four bedrooms, each as tasteful as the other and with plenty of storage. The master bedroom is stylish and equipped with a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite. A large family bathroom is also located nearby.
A carpeted double garage, which incorporates the laundry with lots of storage, complete the interior of the home. Outside areas have been cleverly designed and beautifully landscaped to form areas of privacy and separation. Whilst our seller has thoroughly enjoyed the low-maintenance aspect of this home it is time to downsize. The clever utilisation of space and the modern decor throughout makes this easy-care home a very appealing prospect for young families, downsizers and independents who appreciate ease of living.

Harnessing the sun’s rays
Mid Canterbury electricity users are starting to turn their attention to solar power. Pete Summerfield of Auric Electrical said his company is installing an average of one system a month, but many more were interested in learning how to harness the sun’s rays to keep electricity bills down and be kinder to the environment. While the systems have mostly been installed on residential homes, there were opportunities for smaller communities of users to band together to use solar power, or for businesses and farms, he said. “We’ve had nothing but success and good feedback from the users of the
solar systems we’ve put in.” Summerfield said more education was needed around solar generation as the technology was sound. The Ashburton District receives around 1900 hours of sunshine annually and most properties are physically able to convert that to electricity. Summerfield said the temperature range was also conducive to generation year-round. Photovoltaic panels fixed to a roof convert the solar energy into electricity that can be used around the home. The most common type of system is gridtied, meaning any energy surplus can be given back to the power company in return for a credit.
Summerfield said many older couples or those nearing retirement had invested in solar because they wanted to pay for the system while they were still earning, but enjoy lower power bills in a future when they might not be working. There was also interest from younger couples, who saw it as an investment in the future. The payback time is estimated to be around seven years. Summerfield said the technology had changed little in the past few years but people everywhere were more receptive to the idea of solar power as a renewable resource and one that was both accessible and affordable.
“I’ve been doing it for six years in Ashburton now and it is constant, and starting to pick up. There will always be early adopters but there is more appetite now.” He said solar made sense financially as well as reducing a home’s carbon footprint. The most important part of the process was seeking expert advice to make sure a solar system was the right size for the user, he added. Micro-grids of solar users, or small community solar schemes, have been touted as the way of the future for solar and Mid Canterbury had a unique opportunity to be among those leading the way.

In the past when I’ve written about lavender, I’ve tended to focus on French lavender, otherwise known as dentata. This type of lavender is great for hedging and perfect for shaping into standards (basically, big balls of leaves and flowers on stick-like trunks).
There are also other types of lavender worth considering, but this month I’d like to draw your attention to lady lavender. Just like the other varieties, lady lavender has blue/purple flowers, oil that can be extracted, a lovely fragrance, and is great for attracting bees to your garden. But where it shines is in its compactness and its seemingly neverending flowers. It’s the perfect plant for those without room for a typical lavender hedge, as lady lavender looks amazing in pots, and, more importantly, it grows well in a pot because it doesn’t mind becoming a little dry.
To add some scented colour to your potted plant collection, grab some lady lavender seedlings from your local supermarket, Bunnings, or The Warehouse. Alternatively, head to an online store and have them delivered directly to your door. Because lady lavender doesn’t have a large spreading root system like some of the other varieties, you can plant it in any pot that takes your pick. If you’re potting up one of the other types of lavender be aware of the root system and use a pot big enough to accommodate its growth. Fill the pot with a good quality potting mix from your local garden
centre to give the seedlings a nice kickstart. If you’re planting in the garden, lavender grows well next to irises and roses because they all like the same sunny, dry conditions. Just add a bit of lime and a general fertiliser to the soil before you plant. Once you’ve got your base ready, dig a small hole (around three centimetres deep) and place your seedling inside. Plant your lady lavender seedlings around 20cm apart from each other but no further so they grow tightly together for a better look. In not too long at all the flowers on your lady lavender will be ready to harvest or simply enjoy on the plant.
