It’s that time of the year again that we’ve all been looking forward to and if the weather decides to sort itself out, many of us will be dragging out the boat.

Unfortunately, it’s also a time that opens us up to all the dangers associated with it, including fire. Now one thing I never want to do with these articles is come across as pious. I’m a volunteer and a parent and just like you. It’s not until you see, first hand what can happen that the dangers all around us graphically reveal themselves. A fire on the boat is an indiscriminate, real and present danger. I was a chartered yacht skipper for many years and have experienced situations you simply wouldn’t normally account for. One particularly memorable incident happened on the quay in Athens. I’d just returned from a hellish trip and was

looking forward to getting my head down at the hotel. A few boats away I hear this huge commotion followed by a group of guys running in panic from below, through the cockpit onto the boardwalk and off into the sunset. Before I had the chance to even wonder what was going on there was the most almighty explosion. Much of the contents of what was a decent sized boat, shot skywards some 30 metres or more. I later discovered the cause and it’s something you simply wouldn't think of.

One of the crew was moving stuff around the locker and in doing so laid the auxiliary outboard onto the battery. The terminals shorted out igniting the fuel tank … boom! “This shouldn’t be happening,” was my first, useless mental response, before I

recovered and darted for the fire extinguisher; that item of safety equipment that had, until now, seemed a legislative necessity rather than an item which might one day save my life. Luckily, on this occasion, the explosion didn’t cause a fire but it graphically illustrates the need to be prepared … for anything!

I’ve always been firmly in the ‘she’ll be alright’ camp and resented the legislation that’s thrust upon us but as I mature, I see more of the obscure incidents that drive it. So this summer all I ask is that you look at the safety kit on board and think about the ‘unthinkable’ and make sure that at the very minimum there’s a dry powder extinguisher aboard.

Make sure your smoke alarms are working the ions, or electrically charged particles. Smoke particles enter the sensing chamber, changing the electrical balance of the air. The alarm will sound when the change in the electrical balance reaches a certain level.

By Shane Woods Insideout Property Services Any time is a good time to install or check your smoke alarms, and although I have looked at smoke alarms in a previous column, it is timely to take another look now there are new rules in place regarding rental properties. As of July this year, landlords are now responsible for making sure rental homes have working smoke alarms at the beginning of each new tenancy, or face a fine of up to $4000. Tenants must replace expired batteries and need to let their landlord know if there are any problems with the smoke alarms as soon as possible. Many property managers recommend landlords install smoke alarms with a 10-year battery. The Residential Tenancies Act requires a minimum of one working smoke alarm within three metres of each bedroom door or every room where a person sleeps. In a multi-storey or multi-level home (including split levels), there must be a smoke alarm on each level or storey. A working smoke alarm is also required in caravans and self-contained sleep-outs. There are a few things you need to know to help you choose the right alarm and position in your home. There are two main types of smoke alarms – ionisation and photoelectric. Ionisation alarms monitor

Long-life photoelectric alarms have a sensing chamber which uses a beam of light and a light sensor. Smoke particles entering the chamber change the amount of light that reaches the sensor, and the alarm sounds when the smoke density reaches a preset level. Long-life smoke alarms are more cost-effective over time because batteries do not need to be replaced every six to 12 months. Ionisation alarms are cheaper and generally more responsive to flaming fires where as photoelectric alarms are more responsive to fires that smoulder for a long period of time and reduce nuisance alarms by cooking or steam. The New Zealand Fire Service recommends households install photoelectric smoke alarms as they provide more effective all-round detection, alarm in all types of fire scenarios and are more likely to alert occupants in time to escape safely. Each type of alarm has different advantages. Home fatal fires, day or night, include a large number of smouldering fires and a large number of flaming fires. You can not predict the type of fire you may have in your home or when it will occur. Any smoke alarm technology must perform for both types of fires in order to provide early warning, day or night, and whether you are asleep or awake. Some people choose to install both types of alarms or a combination alarm (ionisation and photoelectric) in their home. There is a lot of conflicting information as to where it is best

MAKE A COMMITMENT TO PROTECT WHAT MATTERS

Chances are if there is a fire during the day and you are awake you have more chance of noticing a fire than if you are sleeping at night, so install alarms where everyone in the house can be awakened by the sound of a smoke alarm. Ideally install alarms in all bedrooms and outside every sleeping area on every level of the home. Smoke rises so install smoke alarms following the manufacturer’s instructions high on a wall (10cm to 30cm) away from the ceiling, or ideally a ceiling at least 10cm away from the wall. If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm near the ceiling’s highest point. Try avoiding cooking and bathroom areas due to steam and

try to avoid log fires. If you are bent on installing in or near these areas consider alarms with hush buttons to reduce the sensitivity for a short period of time, which is surely better than removing the batteries. Don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts where draughts might interfere with their operation and never paint smoke alarms. Paint, stickers or other decorations could keep the alarms from working. Hard-wired smoke alarms operate on your household power. They can be interconnected so that every alarm sounds regardless of the fire’s location. This is an advantage in early warning, because it gives you extra time to escape if you are in one part of the house and a fire breaks out in another part. Alarms that are hard-wired

The perfect mix Every month I write a gardening article on a couple of plants. I typically try and come up with some kind of unique angle or theme to get things going. But this month I’m just going to get to the point. Chives, coriander and rocket are really handy (and tasty!) plants to have in the garden. In my personal opinion they might taste a little strong if all combined in the same dish. Although, of course, someone else might feel differently about the matter. But individually, they’re just such great herbs to have accessible for fresh cooking. And what do you know? Awapuni Nurseries just happen to have a chives, coriander and rocket mixed bundle available to purchase. Mixed bundles are fantastic because they provide you with a smaller number of seedlings per herb, which means you should end up with about

They’re also great if you like to stagger your planting by planting a few new seedlings every few weeks to ensure you have a continuous supply. Once you’ve got your rocket, chives and coriander plants you need to find somewhere to grow them. Chives are the easiest to grow. The only thing you need to

During winter they will go dormant and it can be easy to miss them and replant over while they’re not visible. That’s why we recommend growing them in a corner or spot you don’t usually garden in. If you’re worried about forgetting where you’ve planted chives, simply install a marker or grow them in a pot. Rocket is the next easiest to grow. It likes sun. At this time of the year it can be grown out in full sun. But when we hit summer it pays to choose an area that doesn’t get hit by the midday heat to avoid sending your plants to seed. Dig through some compost into the area you plan to plant. Or add some good quality potting mix, if you’re planning on planting in large containers (around 25cm or more deep).

Then plant each rocket seedling around 20cm apart. Don’t forget to watch out for snails around your rocket.

Lastly, coriander. We know from customer feedback that this fragrant herb can be a little tricky to grow. But it’s so worth it if you get it right. My top tip for growing coriander is to plant when the weather is steady. This will prevent it ‘bolting’ from the change in temperature that can occur when we change seasons.

Remember to water lightly all your coriander, chive and rocket seedlings once planted. And don’t let the soil dry out around your coriander as this could cause it to bolt. Water all the plants in the morning to allow the water to dry off during the day and prevent disease.

Plant it where you would plant your rocket – full sun before summer and in partial sun during summer. Just make sure it’s in free-draining, aerated soil. You can ensure the soil isn’t hard or too compact by digging it over and adding potting mix if you require. If you’re putting it in a pot, don’t grow it in a small pot indoors. Instead plant it in a deep

And harvest the leaves often to stop them going to seed too early and encourage new leaves to shoot up. And again, if you want a continuous supply, keep planting new seedlings every few weeks.
