The experts might disagree on the benefits of coffee (it’s good for you/ it’s not good for you) but Kiwis have embraced the coffee culture in our own way … usually with plenty of the milk that we produce in our own backyard. If you’re thinking about buying a coffee machine for home, it pays to do your homework before you hit the store, where you’ll be confronted with an overwhelming range of machines. You’ll find the reasonably-priced and easy-to-use nespresso capsule machines for around $299 as well as an assortment of manual and automatic machines where you get to be your own barista, grinding beans and tamping like a pro. Maybe. The high end, fully automatic machines, like the DeLonghi Prima Donna come at around the cost of a small, well-used car but it is the bomb with a big variety of coffee and milk recipes, easy programming and six user profiles for individually tailored drinks. Plus it has a new thermal carafe with double wall to keep milk hotter for longer. However, the majority of people who come into Smith and Church’s Ashburton store looking for a coffee machine leave with a capsule machine – these machines use hermetically sealed pods of coffee. You drop a capsule in the top, pull a lever and push a switch. The machine pierces the capsule and forces hot water through to make an espresso … in about 20 seconds. They’re convenient to use and easy to clean, and really popular, says sales

Some pods can be bought at the supermarket and others easily online with quick delivery. At least one coffee club asks customers to return their pods in a supplied courier bag for special recycling. Whichever machine you decide on, love it by looking after it with a regular descaling. Meantime, go in search of your favourite flavour fix!
