RAV4 a win-win for drivers
T
he all new RAV4, being launched in New Zealand now, will be the first Toyota sport utility vehicle to be offered here with self-charging electric hybrid technology. The RAV4 will deliver an adventure-changing experience while pushing the boundaries with innovative design and utility to deliver a whole new brand experience for customers. “With SUVs increasingly becoming more popular it’s the perfect time to have a self-charging electric hybrid SUV in our line-up,” said Neeraj Lala, Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of product and new vehicle sales. “It’s a win-win for drivers. They will experience the benefit of a lifestyle SUV with great visibility, spacious cabin room and off-road ability all while having exceptional energy efficiency. “The new selection of powertrains will provide customers with more performance, and dramatically improved efficiency with a hybrid power-plant for the first time. “The 2019 RAV4 hybrid is truly a no compromise hybrid system with the same towing capabilities as the petrol variants,” Lala said. A special-edition all-wheel-drive variant, the Adventure grade, will headline the range. It will have a more rugged exterior appearance with larger wheel arch flares, a more aggressive grille, fog light surrounds and unique wheels. With a bolder and tougher look, the
RAV4 will have a greater presence on and off road, complemented by a more sophisticated interior with increased legroom. Its TNGA platform will provide a better driving position, improved chassis dynamics from a lower centre of gravity and 57 per cent greater torsional rigidity over the current model. A new 2.5 litre, four-cylinder engine features in both petrol and hybrid models,
to provide more responsive performance and greater fuel efficiency. There is also a new 2.0 litre petrol engine and CVT transmission combination. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is used with the 2.5 litre petrol engine and an electronic continuously variable transmission with the hybrid powertrain. Multi-link rear suspension and wider front and rear tracks contribute to the
improved handling and road holding, ride comfort and reduced cabin noise. The Toyota Safety Sense package, which is standard across the RAV4 range, will include a pre-crash system with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian detection, all speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist and automatic high beam.

Charismatic Clubman W
ith a precisely modified design, an extended selection of innovative equipment features and the latest technology in the areas of operation and connectivity, the new MINI Clubman hones its profile as a stylish individualist in the premium compact segment. Combining hallmark MINI driving fun with a high level of suitability for both dayto-day driving and long-distance travel, the variable 5-seater now gains additional charisma with fresh accentuations for the exterior and interior. The latest updates in the range of MINI Connected digital services underscore the progressive, lifestyle-oriented character of the new MINI Clubman. Meanwhile, attractive additions to the programme of optional equipment features and Original MINI Accessories provide further possibilities for customisation. Ride comfort, space and variability define the all-round properties of the new MINI Clubman, its modern interpretation of the classic shooting brake concept establishing a distinctive style within the compact segment. Four side doors and five seats along with a versatile luggage compartment behind the two split doors at the rear ensure a high degree of functionality and the kind of creative use of space
characteristic of MINI. Hallmark brand agility is guaranteed by the modern engine portfolio and the high-quality suspension technology fitted in the new MINI Clubman. There is a choice of three petrol* engines and three diesel* engines, with output ranging from 75 kW/102 hp to 141 kW/192 hp (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 4.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 147 – 105 g/km). Customers can also opt to combine the all-wheel drive system ALL4 with the most powerful petrol and diesel engines. The model range will be supplemented
at a later stage with the new edition of the extremely sporty MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. The body design of the new MINI Clubman is stylish, individual and exclusive. Its distinctive proportions result from a body corpus modelled in tight, sporty style as is typical of MINI, a dynamically elongated roof line and a steep rear. In addition, the split doors consisting of
two laterally opening wings make it the only model in the compact segment to offer six doors, along with outstanding versatility due to the fact that the luggage compartment can be extended from 360 litres to as much as 1250 litres. The characteristic look of the new MINI Clubman from the front is also a result of the modified design of the circular headlamps. The standard halogen headlamps now have an enlarged reflector and a striking black shield on the inside. The engine portfolio for the new MINI Clubman includes two 3-cylinder and one 4-cylinder petrol engines along with one 3-cylinder and two 4- cylinder diesel engines, each of which features the latest generation of MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology. Instead of the standard 6-speed manual transmission, a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is optionally available for the MINI One Clubman, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper S Clubman and the MINI One D Clubman.

Experience Everest
E
aster Saturday will see over 170 vehicles and around some 350-plus people gather at the Ashburton Racecourse. The reason being the Vintage Car Club of NZ’s Annual South Island Rally being held here to celebrate the Ashburton branch’s 50th anniversary. Some participants may have the view that it’s not so much where they are going, but how they are getting here. But others, especially those from outside Canterbury, will really anticipate enjoying driving/riding on our straight and flat roads. Even more so if it’s a nice fine day, with a touch of snow on Mount Hutt and the foothills. All of which brings to mind the trials and tribulations pioneering motorists experienced, and how much more fortunate early days Mid Cantabrian motorists and motorcyclists were than those driving and riding on the likes of Banks Peninsula. And that is always a great destination for a road trip, particularly so one that you can relate to, or imagine the rigours of doing the likes of a drive from Little River to Christchurch via Pigeon Bay (including a side trip into Little Pigeon Bay), Port Levy and Purau in a Model T Ford. We did this recently in Ford’s latest Everest, whose comfort and ease of driving also allowed us to appreciate the wonderful history and romance of Little River and the aforementioned bays and ports. This latest Everest comes only in a fully loaded/very well equipped Titanium model, which looks ready to tackle whatever conditions it is confronted with. It costs $79,990 plus ORCs. It’s Ranger-based, but a seven seat, tough SUV with full time four-wheel-drive. As with the Ranger Raptor, the Everest comes with a refined, 2-litre bi-turbo four cylinder diesel, which delivers 157kW and 500Nm of torque from 1750-2000rpm. This engine which delivers an extra 14kW and 30Nm more than the 3.2-litre five-cylin-
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
der (it’s also now an option for the Ranger) has a perceptive and quick changing 10-speed auto. This showed itself to be an ideal partner for this new engine by always keeping it in its sweet spot. The result – spritely acceleration with 0-100km/h in 10 seconds and suitably quick overtaking. Exterior-wise, the trainspotters might note changes to the grille, the new auto-levelling headlights, LED daytime running lights, the stainless steel front scuff plates and 20-inch wheels. While it sits high, access is easy and then behind the wheel it’s also easy to set up a nice driving position, even though there’s no reach adjustment for the steering wheel. The heated front seats both have 8-way power adjustment and proved long distance comfortable. All controls, including the 8” colour touchscreen with its SYNC3, voice control, the sat-nav and adaptive cruise control were straight foward to use. Very favourable comments also as to their seats from the occupants of the centre row. While the seat backs split 40/60, they can be adjusted. The seats also slide back and forward for maximum leg space when the third row (which rises and folds with the touch of a button and is suitable for adults over short distances) is not in use.
Plenty of light in the cabin too, especially if the power blind for the glass sunroof is withdrawn, at which times the benefit of the three-zone climate air system are appreciated. With all three rows in use luggage space is limited and best for soft bags. With the third row folded and the second row occupied up to a 1050 litres can be stacked in via the hands-free, power lifting rear door. Ford say that lots of work has been done to the suspension, particularly so the coil spring rear suspension set-up to achieve enhanced dynamics, smoothness and refinement without restricting the off-road capability, or the 3100kg towing ability. This certainly shows, for Everest provided a very smooth, forgiving ride and composed, predictable handling both on SH1 and the narrow secondary roads (some like tracks) we drove. While we didn’t need them, for serious off-road stuff in addition to low-range there’s a rear diff lock and a terrain selection system with modes for either sand, snow/mud or rock. It’s a very quiet drive as well, partly due to the active noise-cancelling system. The engine mostly only reveals its four-cylinder sounds, rather than the more melodious note of the five-cylinder motor when working harder. Around town and for parking the steering is nicely weighted. While being close to five metres long, if you want to do it yourself and not use the self-parking function, this with the help of the rear camera and front/rear parking sensors is not difficult. From the safety point of view there’s lots of driver-assist functions, including autonomous emergency braking with both vehicle and pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alerts and trailer sway control.
EVEREST TITANIUM ■■ Pricing: $79,990 + ORCs ■■ Engine: 2.0 litre, bi turbo-diesel, 157kW @ 3750rpm and 500Nm from 1750 to 2000rpm ■■ Transmission:10-speed auto, full time 4WD with low range. ■■ Quoted economy: 7.1L/100km ■■ Safety: 5 star ANCAP, driver assist and safety systems. ■■ Size: 4892mm long, 2850mm wheelbase and weighs 2400kgs. ■■ Turning circle: 11.7 metres ■■ Tows: 3100kg. ■■ Warranty: 5-year/100,000km (also for roadside assistance).
FINALE While the Everest, which is the only seven-seat Ford available in NZ, showed itself to be very civilised and refined, both about town, at open road cruise and touring, it is also suitably rugged and well set up for both serious off-road sorties and towing. And thanks in anticipation of forthcoming offers of a veteran/vintage Little Pigeon Bay experience, but I’m fine with my Everest one!

INFINITI T
he INFINITI Qs Inspiration is a sports sedan concept developed for the electrified era. Revealed for the first time at Auto Shanghai 2019, it offers a new perspective on sports sedans with an elevated driving position and high-performance electrified all-wheel-drive power. Representing INFINITI’s desire to challenge tradition, the Qs Inspiration previews a forthcoming production model and hints strongly at the company’s electrified future, in which the brand will
and beyond offer electric and e-POWER powertrains across its line-up. The concept’s flexible architecture has been developed to accommodate high-performance electrified powertrains. It has also enabled INFINITI’s designers to reinterpret traditional ‘three-box’ sedan design, with new exterior proportions and a spacious, lounge-like interior. With its creation led by a team of designers working under Karim Habib, Executive Design Director for INFINITI, the Qs Inspiration Concept confirms INFINITI’s new form language for its
forthcoming electrified vehicles. The concept draws on INFINITI’s Japanese DNA for inspiration, and is revealed in a newly-designed exhibition space, created in partnership with renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The exhibition space has been designed to be in harmony with the new Qs Inspiration concept and INFINITI’s design direction for its electrified models, and will be featured at other major auto shows in future. “As designers, we are constantly inspired by the technology of our engineers
and the Japanese design influences which are part of our DNA,” said Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president for global design, Nissan Motor Company. “Here in Shanghai, we have not been alone on this journey. “I am very honoured to have had Kengo Kuma as a ‘sensei’, helping us evolve and express a new language in our company architecture. “In Shanghai, we reveal our Kuma-san-designed INFINITI booth, expressing a new visual poetry, harmony and innovation.”

T
he Northern Territory has become the third Australian police jurisdiction to select the Kia Stinger as its front-line road traffic policing vehicle. Following in the footsteps of Queensland and Western Australia, the Territory has introduced the first of the high performance bi-turbo V6 Stingers tasked with leading the way on road safety as the traditional Holden Commodore SS fleet is phased out. The Road Policing Command will take possession of seven Stingers to progressively replace all Commodores currently in operation. Commander Matt Hollamby, from the Road Policing Command, said the Stinger was trialled in the NT and found to be a suitable replacement. “Holdens and Fords have been standard road policing vehicles in the NT for the best part of 50 years but now that they are not manufactured, it’s time for us to look at an alternative,” he said.
“We needed a car capable of operating at reasonably high speeds in temperatures of 45 degrees in the shade without missing a beat. The Stinger showed itself to be that car.” Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer, Damien Meredith, said the decision by the NT Government to add the Stinger to the official police fleet was further endorsement of the brand in Australia. “It is extremely pleasing that once again a state government has had the vision to look past ingrained prejudices and give a stamp of approval to the best available option,” Meredith said. “The Stinger is not only an outstanding performance vehicle but is backed by Kia’s industry-leading ownership experience, whether that be for private, government or fleet buyers.” The new Stingers will highlight the Road Policing Command’s Easter safety campaign with a focus on speed, alcohol, driver distraction and seat belt use with a special focus on rural roads.
