Sorento - style and performance K ia has come a long way. Ever since Peter Schreyer, former Audi designer, became head designer at Kia Motors, the range’s looks have progressed in leaps and bounds. With a former BMW designer recently joining the team as head of styling, the future is looking very bright for Kia. Locally, Kia has gone from being at the lower end of the shortlist, to best-selling SUV two years running. The new design direction has played a significant part, but a nod has to be made to the fact that Kia has achieved top spot – ahead of all other car brands – for dependability in overseas test. And let’s not forget that Kia have a leading warranty programme with five years’ cover and Roadside Assist. New Zealand’s taste for SUVs has also helped, with the range including the highly popular Kia Sportage and the impressive Kia Sorento, ticking the boxes for great contenders in both the mid-size and large seven-seater SUV segments. This brings us nicely to the Kia Sorento. As a seven-seater, it’s up against popular brands like Toyota, Volkswagen, Mazda and Ford. Those shopping in this segment would very much benefit from giving the Kia a go. The spec sheet shows the Kia Sorento range to be impressively equipped, but it’s the finer details that really make a difference. Details that you only appreciate once you live with the
vehicle, rather than experience it on a test drive. Take the pull-up rear window blinds. Anyone with young children will know that a rear sunshade is essential for longer car journeys. The Sorento’s blinds offer nice advantages over aftermarket shades that you wouldn’t realise until you’ve spent time in the car with kids. They entirely cover the win-
dow, so there’s no need at all to keep adjusting. The edges of the blinds cannot be reached by little children who might interfere with them, they disappear into the door when not in use so can’t be stood on when left on the floor, and – perhaps the biggest benefit of all – you can now lower the window with the blinds still in place, giving the back seats both shade and fresh air.
Window blinds aside, the Sorento has an impressively premium feel that would rival more ‘luxury’ brands. Even the base model boasts some impressive gear and stats. Fuel economy starts from just 6.5L/100km with CO2 at 164g/ km, with the 2.2L diesel providing 147kW of power and 441Nm torque through its all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission.
It boasts a cavernous 1662 litres of space (seats down), and features a 7” touchscreen with Apply CarPlay/Android Auto smart phone connectivity. The Kia Sorento comes with a more-than-comfortable suite of safety technology and driving assistance, including both front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and lane change assist.
Jaguar I-PACE a world beater
T
he all-electric Jaguar I-PACE has completed an historic treble at the 2019 World Car Awards. Not only has it won the coveted 2019 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year titles – equalling the success of the F-PACE in 2017 – it has also been named World Green Car. I-PACE is the first model ever to win three world car titles in the 15-year history of the awards. This latest win for the I-PACE, awarded at the New York International Auto Show by a panel of 86 motoring journalists from 24 countries, comes just weeks after it claimed the European Car of Year title and affirms its status as the most desirable premium electric vehicle (EV) in the world. Jaguar NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says the awards are
a reflection of the ground-breaking innovation and thousands of hours of expertise which has gone into developing the new EV. “These awards are the industry’s most sought after and are recognition of the significant investment in human resource and technology
that has been made in bringing the I-PACE to market. “Jaguar is at the forefront of innovation in the electric vehicle space and has successfully leveraged their expertise in Formula E racing as well as decades of premium vehicle design to produce this
multi-award winning electric vehicle concept which has clearly resonated with hundreds of our New Zealand customers,” he says. Designed and developed in the UK, I-PACE is attracting new customers to the Jaguar brand, for many of whom it will also be their first EV – to date, over 11,000 customers in more than 60 countries worldwide have taken delivery. Its combination of sports car perfor-
mance, zero emissions, exceptional refinement and true SUV practicality make I-PACE the stand-out choice in its segment. “Designing Jaguar cars is probably the best job in the world, and I can honestly say that no other project I’ve worked on has been as rewarding as I-PACE. Electric vehicles offer designers unprecedented freedom to rethink the proportions, the profile and the packaging, and it’s an opportunity that my team has exploited in full. Winning the 2019 World Car Design of the Year award, as well as World Car of the Year and World Green Car, is true recognition for their achievements,” Ian Callum, Jaguar director of design, said. The I-PACE’s dramatic, cab-forward profile, short overhangs and taut, muscular haunches set it apart from other SUVs. The spacious interior is finished with beautiful premium details and exacting Jaguar craftsmanship.

Street sprints 30 this year Bernard Egan MOTORING
B
ack in March 2013 Trevor and Kathryn Shaw shared their interest in motoring with us. In that article we recounted how, when Trevor was growing up in England, he decided he liked American cars. After emigrating with his parents and sister to New Zealand in 1960, Trevor and his father established a painting business. In the early days of the business American cars – a 1928 National Chevrolet and a 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe – served as work vehicles. As time went on other business vehicles were purchased, but Trevor never forgot how much he liked those Chevrolets and in retirement he and Kathryn were able to purchase another Chevrolet Deluxe. They joined the Vintage Car Club and Trevor, always keen to help, became actively involved in various ways, including two terms as chairman. Vintage Car Club members, many others in the community and us here at Guardian Motoring were saddened when we heard of Trevor’s recent passing. He was a kind, cheerful gentleman who had a wonderful knack of making others feel special. We offer Kathryn and her family our condolences. Wheels Week Annually at this time of year thoughts turn to the uniquely Ashburton extravaganza which is about to happen – Wheels Week Plus. This wonderful celebration of the wheel takes place between May 4 and 19. An enthusiastic and busy organising committee, supported by generous sponsors, has ensured there are plenty of things for people to see and do. Over 30 separate activities appear on the programme. Jump on www.wheelsweek. co.nz or the Ashburton App (you can find it on the events button, under things to do) to see details. Wheels Week, which has been around for many years, incorporates the very popular and exciting street sprints, which itself celebrates a special anniversary this time around. This year marks the 30th running of the event. The street sprints have a wonderful history which has seen skilled drivers propel quick cars around a circuit. Some of the cars have become iconic fixtures at the sprints, usually cars not previously seen appear at the event. Over two days of practice heats and eliminations will be great entertainment for spectators as the competitors race one car at a time to get down to a two-car run-off on Sunday, May 12. Over the years records have

been set and broken. And the sprints themselves have set a record for being the only event of its kind in New Zealand to have run consecutively for this many years. This year renowned local vehicle dealers Smallbone Ltd celebrates 100 years in business. A display on the East Street Green on Friday, May 17, will be part of their celebration. Vehicles have changed enormously since the business began. And these days we are seeing the emergence of and hearing a lot about electric vehicles. There will be a display of and an opportunity to test drive electric vehicles during Wheels Week. Everyone loves a parade and on Sunday morning, May 19 – the final day of Wheels Week Plus – there will be a big one along East Street which will be a real crowd-pleaser. Wheels Week isn’t just about cars, it’s about everything wheelie and that’s why it provides so much pleasure for so many people.
