New Hiace van the sexiest yet T
he van. Not usually one to raise a pulse but with the new Hiace, we think Toyota might have cracked it. It’s the smartest, safest and — dare we say it — sexiest Hiace yet. Redesigned top to bottom, this is the van of your dreams. Assuming of course, dreams about vans are your kind of thing. Thanks to its Euro 5 four-cylinder 2.8-litre 1GD turbo-diesel engine with stop & start function, the New Hiace offers improved fuel economy and onroad performance across the five-model range. The Hiace ZR 2-seat automatic van’s highly efficient common-rail turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic transmission delivers 130 kilowatts of power (up by 30kW), and 450 Newton metres of torque (up 150Nm). Combined fuel economy for the New Hiace ZR automatic is 8.2/100km which is a 0.5/100km improvement on the previous model. The exterior of the Hiace ZR automatic is longer, wider, and taller than before, which means it now offers 6.2 cubic metres of cargo carrying capacity. The load floor length is 2745mm, load width is 1775mm and the load height is 1315mm. The cargo area is also designed to allow the easy fitting of racking or other modification, and it provides six-tie down points on the floor. The Hiace ZR automatic has a towing capacity of 1500kg and the manual 1900kg with a braked trailer, and a maximum payload of 1030kg.
Toyota Safety Sense is fitted as standard across the new Hiace range, and it features pre-collision system with autonomous Emergency Braking (PCS with AEB), as well as vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle detection functions. Lane departure alert (LDA) with brake control will help the driver maintain lane discipline, while road sign assist (RSA) and automatic high beam (AHB) allow you to focus on the road ahead. The Hiace ZR 2-seat automatic has a 7-airbag system including driver and passenger front airbag, seat side airbag, driver’s knee airbag, and front curtain shield airbag. Trailer sway control (TSC) is also fitted as standard to all new Hiace models; and provides you with higher levels of safety and confidence when taking to the road with a loaded trailer hitched to the vehicle. Larger commercial vehicles undoubtedly suffer a few panel bumps and bruises in their everyday working life, but Toyota has gone to great lengths to mitigate parking damage when manoeuvring the new Hiace ZR2-seat automatic in narrow streets and loading bays. Each Hiace is fitted as standard with parking sensors in the front and rear bumpers, a blind spot monitoring system (BSM), a reversing camera, and rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) which will alert you about oncoming traffic when trying to reverse the vehicle from a driveway or a building entrance. The new Hiace ZR 2-seat automatic is also equipped
with power folding mirrors, to prevent possible damage when you are parking the vehicle in narrow streets or when you are manoeuvring inside a building. So there you have it, Toyota has
completely redesigned the sixthgeneration new Hiace to meet the needs of the widest group of customers yet, who are seeking a safe, well-engineered, efficient, comfortable and trusted workhorse.

ollowing the highly anticipated introduction of the new X 350 d 4MATIC flagship X-Class model in December last year, the anticipation now rises to an even higher level. In July 2019, an Edition 1 X 350 d 4MATIC variant will be released with only a limited number available. By emphasising the bold aspects of the exterior with exclusive black design features and accessory parts, this model pushes the boundaries of the classic dual cab ute even further. It complements the strengths of a dual cab ute with the unique style characteristics of a limited edition MercedesBenz. The Edition 1 standard metallic paint will be available in three different colours, kabara black, bering white or rock grey. However when it comes to the exterior parts, black is the order of the day: boasting a black centrally positioned star and twin-louvre radiator grill, front and rear bumper-bar valance, fog light surrounds, side door handles, rear tailgate handle, nomenclature badges, beltline trim strip, roof rails and 19-inch 6-twin-spoke alloy wheels. As a first for X-Class sports stripes adorn the engine bonnet, side mirrors, V6 badge surrounds, lower side lines and rear tailgate. In kabara black, all exterior parts and stripes are a high gloss finish, with the sports stripes appearing in grey for contrasting impact. The black styling bar and tubed side steps give the Edition 1 an even sportier and more progressive character. The Edition 1 is based on the X 350 d POWER variant, meaning dynamic driving pleasure continues to be ensured thanks to the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 190 kW/550 Nm and the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system with low range reduction gear.

Acadia the adventurer W
here have you driven it, is a frequently asked question. Well for the Holden’s flagship family vehicle the Acadia LTZ-V, how about firstly north of Auckland around the Kaipara Harbour hinterland. Then secondly about Mid-Canterbury, but most recently, the Chatham Island. How come the Chathams? Holden decided to celebrate the 65th birthday of the brand in New Zealand by marking this with an audacious world-first by being the first automotive marque to stage an event on the Island. “It is claimed the Chatham Islands rose from the sea 65 million years ago, so there is a great synergy with 2019 being the year Holden celebrates its 65th anniversary in New Zealand,” said Managing Director, Marc Ebolo. With a strong desire to make a real statement of the direction the company is heading in the future, it shipped Trax, Equinox, Trailblazer, Acadia SUVs and a Commodore Tourer to the Island, where the roads are predominatly shingle, twist and turn, rise and fall around the coastline. We also drove on farm tracks, accross peaty paddocks and along beaches. An unlikely environment you may think for this large, born in the US of A, Acadia with its Interstate capability. Lets see! The Acadia range starts at $49,990 for the front drive LT progressing through to this $71,990 LTZ-V. All models use the same 3.6-litre petrol V6 (as do the all-wheel-drive Commodores). It responds quickly and produces 231kW and 367Nm, which, in connection with the pro-active, smart changing 9-speed auto, makes it rather quick.
For example – from standstill to 100kmh can happen in just over 7 seconds. A bit irrelevant for Chatham Islands driving though, for the speed limit is 80kmh. But then it can be impressively frugal with the claimed 9.3L/100km (and better) achieved. No doubt the engine’s ability to deactivate two cylinders on the likes of flat open road cruising (on the mainland) when its ticking over at just 1500rpm at 100km/h assists greatly there. Also the idle stop/go helps out. Plus there’s selectable modes for different driving conditions including constant, rather than on-demand all-wheel-drive, performance and towing. While constant all-wheel-drive, with its also adjustable torque split front/rear was selected for driving on the Island, the adaptive mode, with mainly front-wheeldrive was fine for most driving done on both the Mainland, and the North Island. The Acadia showed its ability to lap up long distances in a very quiet and stressfree manner, yet was then equally well able to translate this to island driving. Its hunkered down, firmy attached to the road looks neatly reflected its road manners, both on SH1 and then on secondary roads/tracks driven. Irrespective of how many were aboard the ride was plush but still suitably firm, thanks to the Anzac involvement in the development of both the handling and ride factors. As well the obvious benefits of the LTZV’s adjustable, adaptive suspension were very noticeable. All of which resulted in an excellent mix of precise, predictable handling (you can enjoy pushing it through corners) combined with excellent comfort, even over those rough surfaces. I decided that ‘easy’ was an appropriate

description for the cabin. Firstly because it’s certainly that for all seven to get on board and comfortably set up in the leather furnished cabin. Then very easy to sit back and enjoy the comfort, space and conveniences on board. For the driver there’s plenty of adjustment, while the dials and controls are where and how you expect them to be. There’s an impressive line-up of technology aboard including an excellent infotainment system, a 360degree camera (very handy for both parking and lining up towable stuff) radar cruise, speed sign memory, AEB, cyclist detection, blind spot active steering, park assist, rear cross traffic alerts and more. No head-up display though. The second row slides back and forth and those sitting there-in have separate climate-air controls and dual USB ports. With many third row seats you sometimes feel there’s a class system as you migrate from the front to centre to back. Well that’s definitely not so here for the two third row seats are large and comfortable with plenty of space all-round for my 179cm build. Great view out as well! Then with all seats occupied, there’s still reasonable space for luggage to be loaded via the powered tail-gate. With the third row folded, there’s a great 1042 litres of space available.

FINALE While being a family friendly, very spacious, excellent long-distance capable SUV with lots of technology and safety features, the Acadia is also well set up for those with a more adventurous needs. It certainly showed its capable off venturing off the road and into less accessible parts of greater NZ. The Acadia is pictured on the Island with an 1870’s stone cottage built by German Moravian missionaries Baucke and Engst in the background. The cottage, which sits close to the imposing Maunganui Bluff, is listed by Heritage NZ as a Category 1 building. While there’s no road access, nor electricity, it is occupied by a delightful lady, Helen Bint, who lives alone in this cottage where she spent part of her childhood. Speaking of birthdays, the Convair in which we flew to the Chatham Islands started life as a 340-42A in 1953 – the year before Holden arrived in NZ. It was converted to a Jet-Prop 580 in 1969 and has been with Air Chathams since 1996.
