Premium driving experience T

he eagerly anticipated new Nissan LEAF will be in New Zealand showrooms from August, priced from $59,990 (MSRP) plus on road costs. The new Nissan LEAF is the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision to transform the way people drive and live. LEAF is the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, offering a premium electric driving experience at an affordable price. “With strong interest in the new Nissan LEAF we see great potential for the vehicle and at this price we are giving it every chance to succeed,” said Nissan New Zealand managing director John Manley. “It’s certainly an exciting time for EV buyers. “With a contemporary design, increased range and long list of standard features, this incredibly fun to drive car presents New Zealand electric vehicle buyers with a stylish, affordable option.”

“The new Nissan LEAF will be sold in 28 Nissan dealerships nationwide making Nissan the largest pure electric vehicle network in New Zealand,” said Manley. New Nissan LEAF comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto™ and e-Pedal, among other features. The impressive e-Pedal allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate, stop and hold the car by using the accelerator pedal alone without needing to use the brakes. It also features an Auto-Hold function. The new Nissan LEAF is available in a single high-spec grade. It has a 40kWh battery, an improved 110kW of power, up 38 per cent versus the outgoing model, and 320Nm of torque, an increase of 14 per cent over the first generation, adding a degree of exhilaration for the driver thanks to the instant acceleration. The new model has a driving range of up to 270km (WLTP combined cycle) making it perfect for city-based New Zea-

landers, who on average travel less than 40 km/day. While you can fully charge LEAF within 24 hours, the time drops to 7.5 hours if the household has the latest 7kW home charger. You can also plug your LEAF into a CHAdeMO rapid charger and get from 20 per cent to 80 per cent charge in around 60 minutes depending on charging conditions. The new Nissan LEAF also has worldfirst bi-directional charging capabilities. This technology, which Nissan is working with its partners to realise in New Zealand, allows owners to use the charge from their car to power their home or business, or return electricity to the grid. Active safety technologies include intelligent around-view monitor with moving object detection, intelligent cruise control, intelligent emergency braking with pedestrian protection, intelligent rrace xontrol, and intelligent lane intervention.

The new Nissan LEAF also features predictive forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, high beam assist, ISOFIX anchor points and front and rear parking sensors. Combining these with a contemporary exterior and interior design, an 8-inch touchscreen display, 7-inch advanced drive assist display, satellite navigation, heated steering wheel, leather accented seats and ample space for five, the new LEAF offers a comfortable, quiet drive that will be enjoyed by everyone. The new Nissan LEAF is available in six contemporary colours including Arctic White, Ivory Pearl with black roof, Magnetic Red, Pearl Black, Platinum and Gun Metallic. Customers will be able to register to pre-order their new Nissan LEAF and select their preferred Nissan Dealer by visiting Nissan New Zealand website. Vehicle deliveries will commence in August.

“We had an end-of-the-year clearout sale of our secondhand cars. We promoted this in the Guardian with a full page ad. We were happy, when we asked potential customers how they heard about the sale, when they said the Guardian. The ad worked for us.”

Plenty to like here

M

uch has been written about the transformation of utes from from work horses to quite luxurious family transport, with the ability to easily do everyday commutes as well as cruise comfortably and quietly for long distances. And also how prices of these top models have risen rather dramatically. Consequently there’s now a ute to suit just about any work situation or lifestyle. While some will possibly be like many of their SUV close relatives, whose biggest offroad experience may be some judder bars, many people do want to tow serious stuff and have real off-road capability. Enter this latest version of the Triton VRX, which with its noticeable, squared off dynamic shield grille with lots of chrome showing that Mitsubishi certainly intends that it is going to be noticed! The advertising slogan is ‘Beast Mode’ as they target buyers looking for something a little different at a very competitive price. So this top-of-the-range VRX, which currently costs $49,990 (+ORCs), is the Lion King of the ten-strong Triton range. That range includes chassis-cab, clubcab and double-cab models with either two or four-wheel-drive in either GLX, GLX-R, and the double-cab only VRXs. While their dimensions are quite neat compared to some of the opposition, that imposing front helps create an illusion of being bigger. The VRX is generously equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, integrated alloy side steps, tray liner, trailer sway-control, front/ rear parking sensors and a 360-degree surround view camera. Inside, there’s lots of luxury and safety features. They include leather upholstery, heated front seats with power adjustment

for the drivers, a 7-inch touch-screen, 6-speaker sound system and climate air with ceiling mounted distribution for rear passengers. No sat-nav, but there’s Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto to use your phone to access this. The interior plastics and facings are harder surfaced and built for likewise use. There’s excellent space for those in the front seats, which are suitably long trip comfortable. While space in the rear is certainly adequate, the very upright seatbacks maybe not be appreciated for the long haul. While the 135kW and 437Nm of torque (at 2500rpm) the 2.4 litre turbo-diesel produces is less than some of the opposition, it’s more than enough to give the Triton good performance. Those outside will notice a traditional diesel sound, but within this is well muted and quiet at open-road cruise, thanks no doubt in part to the new six-speed auto. This. with its broader ratios, also plays a major role in the perky performance and good fuel figures. It shifts quickly and smoothly and then allows the engine to cruise at relaxed revs, but also responds quickly as needed. Standstill to 100km/h can be achieved in 11 seconds, while the claimed overall fuel use is 8.6L/100km. The full chassis, rear leaf spring suspen-

sion setup has been revised for improved on and off-road comfort, so it delivers a nice smooth ride on bitumen, with only sharp-edged, deep bumps being noticed. The ride becomes even better with some ballast in the tray. Through corners the user-friendly steering is relatively direct and the Triton corners predictably with the expected amounts of body movement when pressed. For serious expeditions off the beaten track it has Mitsubishi’s latest in off-road technology, the super-select 4WD system. This, while not being a full-time 4WD system, has a centre diff, which means 4WD can be engaged for driving/cruising on bitumen if so desired and/or conditions require. Then there’s the selectable off-road modes for maximum traction – for gravel, mud/snow and rocks as well as low range and hill descent control. Ground clearance is 220mm, while the front and rear overhangs mean approach and departure angles are 31 and 23 degrees respectively. The test VRX came with the optional deck mounted sports bars and concertina-ing metal cover. While the latter can be locked so stuff on the tray is secure, it isn’t easy to use and restricts access to the front tie-down points. About town parking is easy with the help of the surround-view camera and front/ rear sensors. The strong line-up of safety features includes LED headlights/daytime running lights, blind spot/forward collision warning/mitigation with predestrian detection, auto high beam, rear cross traffic alerts, heated mirrors with blind spot warning lights. There’s no adaptive cruise control though.

Triton VRX

TRITON VRX ■■ Pricing - currently $49,990. Other models from $38,790 (all + ORCs). ■■ Engine: 2.4 litre turbo-diesel, 135kW @ 3500rpm and 437Nm @ 2500rpm. ■■ Transmission: 6-speed auto, with super select 4WD. ■■ Quoted economy: 8.6L/100km ■■ Safety: 5 star NCAP - many standard safety features. ■■ Length: 5305mm. ■■ Turning circle: 11.8 metres ■■ Tows: 3500kg (has trailer stability control) ■■ Warranty: 5-year/130,000km new vehicle, with premium roadside assist, plus ten-years/160,000km for the powertrain

FINALE While the “Beast Mode” tagline may be just a little bit over the top, and some other utes have more power, performance and cabin space, there’s much to like about this accomplished Triton VRX. Especially so with its current pricing!

he interior and exterior of the All-New Mazda3 is the physical demonstration of the vehicle’s premium quality – but it’s the changes motorists can’t see that make it the class leading vehicle in the segment. Mazda New Zealand managing director David Hodge said having a fantastic looking vehicle is only part of the story when it comes to creating a premium vehicle. “A quiet smooth ride is one of the hallmarks of a premium class vehicle and the Mazda design team have excelled themselves in this area when it comes to the all-new Mazda3. “They have made sure every box was ticked when it comes to this vehicle and motorists will find that ride, comfort and safety features deliver a complete package that will impress driver and passengers alike.” Key to delivering a quiet ride is to reduce the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). On the Mazda3 this has been achieved by eliminating any unwanted noise. The all-new Mazda3 is the first Mazda to feature a “two-wall” structure which leaves space for air between the floor carpeting and body panel beneath it to greatly improve insulation quality. In another Mazda first the allnew Mazda3 features a seal inside the parting lines between the roof panel and tailgate on the hatch or the rear window and boot on the sedan. This greatly reduces noise caused by wind blowing into the gap and delivers rear seat passengers a far

Quietly outstanding

quieter ride when travelling on the open road. To deliver enhanced performance, fuel economy and efficiency, the skyactiv-G 2.0L and 2.5L petrol engines incorporate a number of technologies, including optimising the shape of intake ports and pistons to increase the strength of the tumble flow which improves torque at low-med rev range and improves fuel economy at the top end. Cylinder deactivation also features on the skyactiv-G 2.5L engine which contributes to fuel economy by shutting-down the outer two cylinders when driving at constant speeds. Safety has always been a priority for Mazda designers and that continues with the all-new Mazda3 which introduces new active and passive safety technologies alongside existing safety features. The Mazda3 range features the widest set of i-activsense technologies as standard. New additions to the i-activsense set on the Limited model include front cross traffic alert, cruising and traffic support and driver monitoring. Front cross traffic alert operates on the same basis as rear cross traffic alert. It uses front-sided radars to detect and warn drivers when approaching intersections where the view is partially blocked. The all-new Mazda3 model lineup has changed to reflect the high level of craftmanship, refinement and specifications. As a result, the range starts with a GSX model priced at $36,595 and two grades: GTX and Takami have also been added to complement the model line-up.

Sound of success

T

he new BMW 8 Series Convertible combines opentop, four-seater luxury with sportscar performance and handling, a spacious interior and a superb soundtrack to match. Two engines will be offered at launch. There’s a V8 petrol engine in the 530hp BMW M850i xDrive and a 320hp six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 840d xDrive. Using the new 8 Series platform and distinctive new design language, the new BMW 8 Series Convertible marries elegance with sporting prowess. With an exterior length of 4843mm, a width of 1902mm and height of 1339mm, along with the 2822mm wheelbase and track widths of 1619mm (front), its dimensions match those of the BMW 8 Series Coupé almost exactly. The focus on exceptional body rigidity for the concept underpinning the BMW 8 Series means that only a small number of additional convertible-specific and weight-increasing measures were required. The BMW 8 Series Convertible cuts an impressive figure with both the roof up or down. Precise character lines trace the path of the airflow between the front and rear wheels while tapered surfaces around the front wheels and doors spread out at the top of the rear wheels. Discreet contouring marks out the surfacing above the rear wheels as the flanks transition into the rear end. The compartment for the soft-top roof causes the trailing edge of the car’s body to be slightly higher than that of the BMW 8 Series Coupé. With the roof down the rear end appears extremely flat and low to the road. In addition, horizontal lines and light units extending into the flanks accentuate the width of the car. The third brake light embedded in the boot lid adds to the low-slung look. Other model-specific features include a brace of contour lines on the boot, while the L-shaped rear lights are underscored

by the line of the taillight bar that lights up uniformly. Twin exhaust trapezoidal tailpipes round off the lower section of the rear apron. The BMW 8 Series Convertible is equipped with adaptive LED headlights as standard. BMW laserlights are available with variable road illumination and selective beam, as a cost option. An almost fully-sealed underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and air curtains in the front apron perfectly optimise the new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s aerodynamics. Additionally narrow exterior mirror bases reduce the car’s drag coefficient. The front spoiler extension on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible underlines its aerodynamics-focused design. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s roof is lightweight and provides superb acoustic insulation. Opening and closing automatically at the touch of a button in 18 seconds, the insulated roof can be activated when the car is travelling at speeds of up to 50km/h. When the soft-top roof is closed, it sits taut over the interior, thus retaining its coupé-like silhouette without compromising on design. The BMW 8 Series Convertible offers a standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System featuring 12 speakers while the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is optional. Two engines are used in the BMW 8 Series Convertible and they are accompanied by a model-specific sports exhaust system. The BMW M850i xDrive version is powered by a 530hp V8 petrol delivering a peak torque of 750Nm and a zero and 62mph time of 3.9 seconds, while the BMW 840d xDrive features a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel. This unit offers 320hp, a peak torque of 700Nm and will accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds.

BIG CATS ON THE PROWL A

pack of Jaguars were out in force on Sunday for the combined run of the South Canterbury Jaguar Owners Club and the Christchurch Jaguar Drivers Club. South Canterbury Jaguar Owners Club captain Brendan Nicholls said the run was enjoyed by everyone who took part. “It is the second time we have had a combined run in Ashburton,” he said. “Last year we went to Lake Hood and had lunch at the Lake House and this time we have gone up to Terrace Downs. “We ran a time trial to Terrace Downs over a pre-set course and then had 106 people for lunch.” Nicholls said there were between 40 and 50 cars which took part in the day, ranging from older vehicles like Mk 2 and E-Type Jaguars from the 1960s through to newer models. Nicholls said the big appeal of owning Jaguars came in the quality of the vehicles. “There is a saying – classic not plastic,” he said.

Magnificent Macan P

orsche was a pioneer in developing premium sports-oriented SUVs, and it aims to keep ahead of an increasingly busy segment of the market with the new Macan 2 compact SUVs. With a new, upgraded engine, improved connectivity and technology and exterior styling refinements, the German marque is initially offering the new Macan in two variants, a standard four-cylinder model and a more powerful six-cylinder Macan S version. Since its introduction in 2014, Porsche has sold more than 400,000 Macan SUVs around the world, promising classic Porsche style and performance on any terrain. When the Macan was introduced here four years ago, the first shipment of 50 was sold out before the vehicles arrived. The Macan has been a consistent performer in the premium SUV market since. The Macan provided a lower entry point to the Porsche brand, and made up most 30 per cent of total Porsche sales last year. The strong sales performance was achieved despite the impending arrival of the Mark 2 versions, revealed to journalists at an Asia-Pacific regional media launch in Melbourne this week. The motoring journos had several hours behind the wheel of the 2-litre four cylinder Macan and the even sportier 3-litre six-cylinder Macan S during the launch. Both offer an exceptional driving experience, with the brand’s sports car heritage flowing into the SUVs. They feel grounded and assured on rough roads, and especially so for a higher-riding SUV. Both models are luxurious inside, with even the standard model no slouch in terms of performance. It accelerates from 0-100km/ h in 6.7s, and has a claimed top speed of 225km/h. The Macan S reaches 100km/h in just 5.1s, and fitted with the Sport Chrono Package, the top speed is 254 km/h. The Macan has always handled well and felt good behind the wheel, but upgrades mean improved comfort, connectivity and driving dynamics. The standard model is now on sale from $115,500, although with desirable options such as adaptive cruise control and sports tailpipes, the cost increases to just over $126,000. The Macan S sells here for around $20,000 more. The new model comes with an improved 2-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine in the standard model, which now produces 180kW of power and 270Nm of torque. The Macan S is powered by a new 3-litre V6 engine with a single twin-scroll turbocharger. It puts out 260kW of power and 480Nm of torque, and is the same engine that powers the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne models. The mono turbocharger is in the inner V in the so-called central turbo layout. Porsche says the short exhaust gas paths between the combustion chambers and turbocharger ensures rapid responsiveness, which is expected by Porsche drivers. The new twin-scroll turbocharger pro-

vides high torque in the low engine speed range, while at the same time contributes to improved responsiveness. Both Macan 2 models have a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive systems. Inside the cabin there is a larger 10.9in touchscreen, with full connectivity as standard and offering improved online navigation and Porsche connect plus. It provides the driver with up-to-date online data at all times for fast route calculation. Like Porsche’s iconic 911 sports cars, the new Macan is offered with an optional GT sports steering wheel.
