An ongoing success story

H

olden has every right to be proud of the Colorado range which has had arguably the biggest mid-life production cycle enhancement yet in the history of GM products. Judging by the positive feedback from motoring media who have driven this model, Kiwi motorists should be very happy with this rugged workhorse. Key features are substantial developments in relation to technology and interior appointments, a greater range of accessories and advancements in ride and handling. Holden engineers in Australia worked collaboratively with their counterparts from GM Brazil and GM Thailand when this model was first introduced, and improved refinement and driveability with a range of chassis changes, including electric power steering and engine and transmission noise and vibration refinements. The interior is incredibly car-like and offers great connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driving a ute is no longer a compromise, in the case of the Colorado it offers the best of both worlds in terms of sheer grunt, load carrying and towing ability, coupled with refinement levels more often

found in a passenger vehicle. With a striking design, advanced connectivity features and refined driving characteristics, the improved Colorado is already proving to be very popular in the Mid Canterbury region. Colorado has resonated well with customers in a segment that has more than

doubled in sales in the past 10 years, and Holden is confident the Colorado will build on this and redefine customer expectations. There is a forward-facing camera with active safety features such as forward collision alert as well as lane departure warning.

For low speed manoeuvres, drivers are assisted by front and rear park assist on selected vehicles and there is a rear-view camera across the range. Inside there is the Holden MyLink infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity delivered through a colour touchscreen housed in the Colorado’s centre stack. The infotainment system also offers Digital (DAB+) radio, embedded satellite navigation and voice recognition. It is the only vehicle in the segment to offer remote window activation, which Holden says will be appreciated by users in hot climates as found in Australia and New Zealand. Holden also provides more genuine accessories for the Colorado including: Bull bars, safari bar, bash plates, extended rail sports bars, steel rear step, tubular steel side steps, LED driving lights, fender flares, nudge bar, snorkel, 18-inch alloy wheels, and all terrain tyres. The Colorado is a key vehicle in Holden’s future product portfolio and its new styling, improved driveability and technology content are sure to be a hit with customers.

Super as it gets

W

hen it hit showrooms in 2011, the Lexus LFA made an immediate impression. Here was a supercar from a brand best known (at the time, anyway) for cars that would clog parking lots at golf clubs and rest homes. Yet, it landed to incredible reception from critics. Most famously, Jeremy Clarkson – you may have heard of him – claimed it was the best car he had ever driven. Not one of the best ... the best. “If someone were to offer me the choice of any car that had ever been made ever, I would like a dark blue Lexus LFA,” is the quote. There are many elements of the LFA that made it a little bit special. The 1LR-GUE naturally aspirated V10 engine didn’t make enormous power (412kW, 480Nm) but it did make one of the

best sounds in motoring. The cabin, like most Lexus cabins today, was a weird handmade sci-fi treat filled with odd shapes and futuristic displays. And, there was the well publicised fact that Lexus lost money on all 500 LFAs. It was a true passion project. If that all sounds like a bit of you, then good news — there’s one for sale in New Zealand. The catch? It’s priced at $995,000. Trade in Warehouse in Christchurch have the car listed for sale. They state that it’s the only Lexus LFA in New Zealand, and one of only 140 built in right-hand drive. It landed five years ago with only 129 delivery kilometres on the clock and “plastic delivery films still intact on every surface”. Since that delivery, this LFA has done more than 5000km. But, that may still be classed as low kilometres to a collector.

True essence of motorcycling

A

gainst the backdrop of a bustling mix of the traditional and the modern on show at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW Motorrad presented an engaging alternative for a time that is being increasingly characterised by rapid technological change. You could see it as a return to the brand’s core, but given a modern twist: the BMW Motorrad Concept R18 transports the essence of the big BMW Motorrad classics into the modern age, or in other words, it is taking a historical motorcycle design and giving it a modern, custom attitude. The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 shows how a forward projection of a 1960s boxer engine could look like today as a purist custom bike in combination with all the classic design icons of BMW Motorrad design. The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 is the essence of motorcycling, a bike in its original, natural form. In true custom style, it celebrates the art of leaving out what you don’t need and then concentrating on what is left. The BMW Motorrad Concept R18 is immediately recognisable as a genuine BMW: boxer engine, cradle frame, exposed universal shaft and drop-shaped fuel tank with its black paintwork and hand-applied contrast lines interpret typical design icons of BMW Motorrad classics, while displaying confidence along with modern-style linearity. The balanced proportions are reminiscent of classics like the BMW R5, and convey – even from a distance – the timeless beauty that comes about whenever things are consistently reduced to their bare essentials.

Announcing the end of

range anxiety

T

his week Audi unveiled its highly anticipated newcomer to the market at the exclusive Audi e-tron launch event in Auckland’s Morningside. In front of over 160 invited guests, three left-hand drive models were revealed showcasing the brand’s first, all electric vehicle. Set to revolutionise the electric vehicle category in New Zealand, the Audi e-tron combines the latest in electric innovation and Audi performance. The new Audi e-tron redefines electric drive with its large high-voltage battery, the foundation for obliterating range anxiety. Offering a comprehensive and reliable array of charging options for at home or on the go, the standard mobile charging system can be used with either a 230-volt household outlet or a 400 volt three-phase outlet. The smart home energy management system offers intelligent solutions such as charging when electricity is less expensive, epitomising electric innovation. The launch of the zero CO2 emissions model powered by New Zealand’s eighty-five per cent renewable energy resources, re-inforces the future of the premium-electric auto market in New Zealand. Audi New Zealand, General Manager, Dean Sheed, says, “Since we announced that the Audi e-tron was coming to the New Zealand market, interest and demand has been high. Over the coming weeks, New Zealanders across the country will be able to test drive the cars and experience the next generation in electric innovation. ” Quiet, powerful and exceptionally efficient, the sporty SUV translates the brand’s fundamental design language into a fully electric vehicle. Audi e-tron fuses the space and comfort of a typical luxury-class automobile with a range suitable for everyday use, catapulting the driver into a new era. Two electric motors with peak electrical output with boost of 300kW launch from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. Combining sportiness and practicality, the new electric all-wheel drive system provides optimal traction and agile handling in all driving situations, delivering the next level in Kiwi Performance.

Sporty, with style and comfort

T

here’s a definite hint of the family connection to the impressive Stinger with the exterior looks of Kia’s new Cerato range. Particularly so with the long bonnet, stretched roofline and detailing. Performance-wise too, for the topof-the-range GT hatchback has a lively 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, dual-clutch 7-speed auto, multi-link rear suspension,18-inch alloys and larger brakes, all of which injects a dash of verve to its practicality. This latest Cerato line-up includes fivedoor hatchbacks in entry level LX, mid range EX, GT Line and the said GT together with LX and EX four-door sedans. Of course SUVs (along with utes) are the current market favourites and Kia has a strong SUV line-up led by the popular Sportage range. While the Sportage is Kia NZ’s best-seller (and currently sitting second overall in the MIA’s new cars/SUV category for the year to date), there are still those who appreciate driving cars rather than SUVs. Hence this new six-model Cerato range, all of which come with a very impressive array of the latest in safety technology. This includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, adaptive cruise control, driver attention alert, lane keep assist, rear traffic alert, rear view camera with front and rear parking sensors and more. Plus excellent LED headlights for the GT Line and GT. All of which, along with their stronger bodies, earns them five star ratings for the 2019 ANCAP testing. I have been driving a GT Line with a GT to follow in August. But just what is a GT Line you may well ask?

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

Well, it replaces (as has been the case with some other recent models in the Kia range) the Limited version. While it doesn’t feature the GT’s turbo engine and those other performance additions, it looks very much like one. Within the contemporary/thoroughly modern looking and feeling now larger cabin, there’s also hints of the Stinger, with an abundance of high-tech details, functionality and soft-touch surfaces, plus a D-shaped steering wheel enhances the sporty driving feel. All models have smart keys with engine stop/start button plus an 8-inch touchscreen. The latter in the GT Line (and GT) has both colour and satnav (this in LX and EX needs to be accessed via Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto). There’s plenty of USB points and wireless phone charging in the GT Line. Because of the larger cabin space there’s more leg, shoulder and head space both front and rear. Leather furnishings feature on all except the LX while the GT Line’s (as are the GT’s) sporty, supportive front seats, complete with both heating and ventilation are embossed with their designations. As well luggage space is impressive with the hatch’s boot holding 428 litres. Folding the 60:40 split-fold rear seat

backs increases this to 1335 litres and there’s a full-size, matching spare wheel as well! The GT Line, as does the LX and EX comes with the familiar 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 112kW of power and 192Nm of torque. It’s paired up with a 6-speed sequential shift auto and delivers smooth and unfussed performance. You generally don’t have to work it hard, except when asking for quickest possible acceleration or encountering steep hills. You can to a certain extent, tailor the car’s responses through selecting one of the four different drive modes available. Three of these (either Eco, Smart or Comfort) are selected by pressing a button. The fourth, Sport, which quickens the engine’s responses and holds on to gears longer, is chosen by shifting the gear selector to the right. I found that Smart mode, which shifts between Comfort, Eco or Sport depending on both the driver and driving conditions lived up to its name, so reserved the dedicated Sport for the hilly bits. The combination of the stronger new body, the upgraded suspension ( McPherson strut front and semi-independent beam rear axle) that has been fine tuned in OZ to suit ANZAC driving conditions and the new steering system with improved feel and feedback, delivered a ride, roadholding and handling package with a reassuredly accomplished feel, one that is in keeping with the sporty looks. The new body stiffness also plays a major role in reducing noise, vibration and harshness for a quiet cabin and ride. The claimed combined fuel use figure is 7.4L/100km and you may expect to achieve close to, or better than this on the likes of a return trip to Christchurch.

KIA CERATO GT LINE ■■ Pricing: $39,900. Others - LX (4-door & 5-door) $31,990, EX (4-door & 5-door): $35,990, GT (5-door): $41,990 (all plus ORCs) ■■ Engine: 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol, 112kW@6200rpm and 192Nm@4000rpm. ■■ Transmission: Six speed auto. Front-wheeldrive. ■■ Dimensions: Length 4510mm, wheelbase 2700mm. ■■ Turning Circle: 10.6m. ■■ Tows: 1100kg braked. ■■ Economy: 7.4L/100km ■■ Safety: Very comprehensive safety package and driver aids including adaptive cruise control. Five-star ANCAP rating. ■■ Warranty: 5 Year/100,000km along with 24-hour roadside assistance and incident care package. Free servicing for 3 years for LX, EX and GT Line and 4 years for GT.

FINALE For those who still prefer and appreciate driving a compact car rather than a compact SUV, this GT Line Cerato comes up with an enticing blend of sporty style, refined comfort, the latest in driver assistance technologies and safety. Then, should you want more sporty performance and handling, the GT costs just $2000 more!
