Topless - if you dare

S

ub-editor Steve Devereux does it, I do it and Bernard Egan used to do it. Drive topless cars that is! For others who so do, the weather up until Queens Birthday weekend certainly invited such indulgence. But now, even with the benefits of this C43 Cabriolet’s furnace-like heating system, the heated (and ventilated) front sports seats and the air-scarves with warm air flowing out from the front headrests for the driver and front passenger’s necks, for many it will still be a case of carefully choosing the day and time thereof for topless experiences. There’s little doubt this two-door car cuts a real dash and looks at its best topless, especially with the frame-less side windows also down. With the press of a button, the very well-insulated, soft-top hood disappears, without trace in just 20 seconds. While this can done while on the move, I didn’t try this. But I did the key-fob control thing while approaching, which meant it was topless and ready to go before climbing in. AMG is the Mercedes-Benz high performance arm. With this C43, AMG’s input is rather subtle, but very effective and includes the special wheels, interior finishings, badging, 4Matic all-wheel-drive and the neat controllable exhaust noise system. Controllable, because AMG obviously reckon, that in appropriate circumstances topless motorists expect and appreciate rich exhaust music as part of the deal. This I enjoyed even more, because the

FINALE This sportily plush C43 cabriolet with its style and price is undoubtedly a niche car. But one that delivers, with a great combination of luxurious topless motoring with strong but quiet performance. Or then, if you so wish, can be rather quick and louder!

test car came with the optional sports exhaust system which delivered, on request, some delightful, throaty sounds . What’s under the bonnet and providing both the sound and urge is a very smooth, quiet if you so want, 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6, which delivers 287kW at 6100rpm and a nice linear 520Nm of torque from 2500 to 5000rpm. The latter means there’s lots of V8-like urgency, right from low down to quickly (very so in Sport+ mode) whisk you away. But for everyday driving, you don’t need to exceed 2500rpm. Depending on which of the selectable drive modes you choose (Comfort is the default one) at a 100km/h cruise, the rev-counter can show just over 1200rpm. Even in Comfort, its a keen but very smooth performer, while delivering a quality ride and neat handling. All of which is likely to suit most drivers, especially so with passengers on board, and perhaps with economy in mind. Sport means things happen even more urgently. Then choosing Sport+ means super-quick responses from the engine, while the always slick changing 9-speed auto goes into fast change mode and the steering and suspension further stiffen up. It all adds up to a serious performance package, with 0 to 100km/h possible in just 4.8 seconds, and while top speed is limited to 250km/h, Ruapuna Raceway is Sport+ territory. Also the suspension settings can be changed separate to the aforementioned drive modes. However just using those modes will

likely keep most drivers more than happy, for in any of them its always a pleasure through corners. Of course the all-wheel-drive adds to the car’s sure-footedness. Sliding behind the wheel into the luxurious, shapely front seats in white leather, there’s plenty of adjustment on hand. The smart-looking dash has a large centre screen and the other digital dials appearances and colours can be changed by touch pads. As well there’s a fantastic-sounding Burmester surround-sound system, changeable colour ambient interior lighting and a head-up display. Getting in/out for two the rear passengers is relatively easy. Once in, there’s adequate leg space, although depending on how far back the front seats are, this may be a bit tight for longer trips. While for topless winter driving those in the front are totally cosy with all their heating comforts, they in the rear mostly miss out on these, so its a cases of toughening up, and making sure the wind blocker and side windows are up. The many latest driver assistance

systems include a surround-view camera for parking and active cruise control with stop/go. Safety-wise there’s an array of airbags, active assist systems for the drivers attention, collision prevention, cross-traffic, evasive steering assist, blind spot, lane keeping and more including excellent reactive LED headlights.

RACETRACK READY

T

he 718 family welcomes new members: with the new 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4, Porsche introduces two particularly emotional and powerful top models to claim top spot in the model series. Their pure character will appeal to sports car enthusiasts who delight in unadulterated driving pleasure and appreciate a high level of agility and an almost intimate proximity to the centre of power. The perfectly balanced mid-engine concept offers all this. For the first time ever, the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4 share a technical base. This includes the newly developed four-litre six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, together with a six-speed manual transmission. The boxer engine generates 309 kW (420 PS) in both models. Whilst the GT4 represents the entry-level GT road model from Porsche, the Spyder lends itself to all kinds of curves. Both rely on highly efficient aerodynamics, a full GT chassis and powerful brakes.

At the heart of both models is the new four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine. The naturally aspirated engine is based on the same engine family as the turbo engines in the current 911 Carrera model series. The new high-revving engine generates 309 kW (420 PS) – 35 PS more than in the GT4 predecessor models. The third generation of the Spyder even has 45 PS more. It delivers a maximum torque of 420 newton metres at between 5000 and 6800 rpm. The manual transmission sports cars can both break the 300 km/h barrier: the 718 Spyder has a top speed of 301 km/h, whilst the 718 Cayman GT4 can reach 304 km/h. Both models accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds from a standing start. The correlated fuel consumption of the mid-engine sports cars is 10.91/100 km according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The fascinating character of this naturally aspirated engine combines a modern

gasoline particulate filter emission control system with the linear power delivery and the immediate response of a GT engine. It has a maximum engine speed of 8000 revolutions. The unparalleled boxer sound remains untouched. Piezo injectors are used for direct fuel injection for the first time ever in a high-revving engine. They split each injection process into up to five individual injections. This supports a complete – and therefore emissions-friendly – combustion process. A variable intake system with two resonance valves ensures optimum gas exchange in the cylinders. Among the striking features of the 718 Cayman GT4 is the comprehensively improved aerodynamics concept. It produces up to 50 per cent more

Thrillseekers choose Mini

N

ew research reveals that Brits would prefer to drive a classic Mini over high speed thrills, such as in a Jaguar E-Type. Indeed, as Mini anniversary celebrations take place across the UK in 2019, www.trackdays.co.uk confirms that Mini track experiences are outselling other higher speed classic experiences by 15 per cent year to date. The surprising revelation is further good news for the iconic, and much-loved marque, in a milestone year. Imran Malek, operations manager at TrackDays, said: “Our latest research indicates that our love affair with the Mini is stronger than ever in its 60th anniversary.

“Many drivers would prefer to get behind the wheel of this iconic compact, which still packs its own punch, rather than experience even faster thrills in some of the other classics available to drive such as the Jaguar E-Type. “It really is great to see that the enduring appeal of one of Britain’s most popular classics is attracting such high levels of bookings.” Further analysis shows that the average age of customers booking a classic Mini driving experience is between 55 and 65 years. Imran added: “Driving a classic Mini is a great way to turn back the clock. Given the average age of customers, it would seem many want to pay homage to a car that was so important in their youth.”

downforce, without adversely affecting drag – proof of outstanding efficiency. The aerodynamics of both models benefit enormously from the newly designed single-chamber arch rear silencer: it creates space in the rear section for a functional diffuser, which accounts for a good 30 per cent of the downforce at the rear axle in the 718 Cayman GT4. The fixed rear wing is also marked by greater efficiency: it produces around 20 per cent more downforce compared with its predecessor. This corresponds to an additional downforce of twelve kilograms at 200 km/h. The front section, which is optimised in the GT style, maintains the aerodynamic balance with a large front spoiler lip and so-called air curtains. The latter calm the air flow along the front wheels.

Dramatic one-two for Toyota

T

oyota Gazoo Racing won the 87th Le Mans 24 Hours with a one-two finish at the Circuit de la Sarthe following a dramatic final hour of the 2018-2019 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season. Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso, in the #8 TS050 HYBRID, defended their Le Mans crown and secured the drivers’ World Championship in the process, winning by 16.9secs from team-mates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the #7. The Le Mans 24 Hours race was Fernando’s last WEC for Toyota Gazoo Racing. He has been replaced for the next season by New Zealander, Brendon Hartley. The #7 car had been heading for a certain victory towards the closing stages of the race but was denied the win in a dramatic finish. On the 367th lap, with a lead of over two minutes, data on the #7 car indicated a puncture and José pitted to replace the tyre. A sensor issue resulted in the wrong tyre being identified, meaning José left the pits still with a deflating tyre. That necessitated a slow lap back to the pits when all four tyres were changed, handing an unassailable lead to Kazuki in the #8. The #7 crew had controlled much of the contest, having set the fastest-ever Le Mans race lap of 3mins 17.297secs. Other motorsport records were rewritten too; Kazuki became the first circuit-racing World Champion from Japan and Fernando is the second driver to win four-wheel world titles in two different disciplines, having previously been crowned Formula One champion.
