Focus ST – the need for speed T welve per cent more powerful. Twelve per cent faster. Ford today revealed that the all-new Ford Focus ST five-door sprints from 0‑62mph in 5.7 seconds – 0.8 seconds quicker than the previous generation model. Powered by a 280PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine – 30PS more than the preceding Focus ST – the all-new model also achieves even faster in-gear acceleration than the acclaimed previous generation Focus RS. Twin-scroll turbocharging technology contributes to segment-leading peak torque of 420Nm for immediate response to throttle inputs, and an innovative anti-lag system enables rapid delivery of boost on demand. Flat-shift capability for the six-speed manual gearbox and Launch Control* also help optimise standing start performance. “The all-new Focus ST is about more than just straight-line speed, but the ability to go toe-to-toe with the now legendary Focus RS over a quarter-mile sprint shows just how much the Ford Performance team has moved the game on in the last four years,” said Leo Roeks, Ford Performance director, Europe. “We’ve drawn inspiration from the Ford GT supercar, F‑150 Raptor pick-up, Ford Mustang and Fiesta ST to develop a Focus ST capable of punching you in the back the moment you hit the throttle.” The Focus ST 2.3-litre EcoBoost’s low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger scavenges exhaust gasses more effectively to optimise
the energy transferred into the turbine wheel – producing more power and delivering boost pressure faster. Separated exhaust channels transfer the gas pulses from cylinders one and four, and two and three – minimising pulse interference for a consistent flow of energy. Anti-lag technology can electronically hold the throttle open for up to three seconds after the driver backs off the accelerator, alleviating the reversal of airflow from the turbocharger to maintain compressor wheel speed. By keeping the turbocharger primed
for immediate response and maintaining positive pressure in the intake manifold when off throttle, the innovative technology allows faster resumption of both boost pressure and optimised combustion when the driver returns to the accelerator. In addition, an electronically actuated turbocharger waste-gate allows closer control of boost pressures for enhanced engine performance. Flat-shift capability can also help deliver ultimate standing start acceleration by automatically emulating anti-lag and holding the throttle open as the driver
disengages the clutch to shift up through the short-throw, six-speed manual gearbox – thereby maximising turbocharger response. A gear-shift indicator light, available with the optional Performance Pack, lets drivers know the optimal point to change gears, and Launch Control can be engaged to maximise grip off the line for consistently fast standing starts. The all-new Focus ST’s straight-line speed is matched by its cornering ability, optimised using Ford’s first electronic limited-slip differential for a front-wheel drive model. Incorporated into the six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmissions for 2.3-litre EcoBoost models, the system uses hydraulically activated clutches to redistribute up to 100 per cent of available engine torque to the wheel with more traction to counteract wheelspin. The result is increased agility and a significant reduction in understeer during acceleration through, and out of, corners. Faster to deploy and offering greater precision than a traditional mechanical limited-slip differential the system can pre-emptively adjust torque distribution using inputs from powertrain and vehicle dynamics sensors, and can apply differential locking gradually for fine-tuning performance. The Focus ST also delivers greater stopping power than even the previous generation Focus RS, with 330mm front discs and front callipers each housing two 44mm diameter pistons.

JAG J
enny Thompson was at primary school when she first dreamt of owning a Jaguar. The dream was inspired by seeing a very elegant neighbour driving her magnificent Jaguar saloon. Jenny knew her neighbour was a lovely lady and everything about the car – the style, the colour – appealed to Jenny. Along with other things, Jenny has gone on to be a well-known artist, so her recognition of the superb features of the Jaguar were an early indication of her sense of design. Jenny says she didn’t have a particular interest in cars, she just immediately knew Jaguars appealed to her. Jenny then met her late husband Norm, who worked in the motor trade. Later they established their own business and Jenny assisted in the office. Many years after she had first seen the neighbours’ Jaguar, Jenny noticed a really stylish silver-blue S Type Jaguar about town. Her dream was awakened, and she told Norm how much she liked that car and how much she would like one like it. Secretly Norm went on the hunt for a Jaguar, and he found an identical S Type for sale in Christchurch. He decided the car would make a great surprise birthday present for Jenny, but at that stage her birthday was six months away. The seller agreed to store the car for some of that time ,but a little while before Jenny’s birthday Norm had to spirit the car to Ashburton. There was space at their business, but of course if the car was parked there Jenny would

see it, so during the day Norm would park the car elsewhere and then after Jenny left for the day the car was brought inside overnight. There were a few times when Norm arrived home only to remember he hadn’t parked the Jaguar in the workshop, so had to make an excuse to go back to work. Finally the big day came and Norm arranged a birthday party.
He told Jenny and some family members he needed to call into work and invited them to come too. On arrival Jenny was stunned to see their workshop was empty except for one very special car – her birthday present, the silver blue S Type – highlighted and looking resplendent under bright lights. Naturally Jenny was amazed and 45 years later recalls her tears of joy. In the years since, Jenny and Norm retained the S Type, but also purchased later model Jaguars, and not so many years ago the S Type was sold. Jenny says each of the Jaguars they have owned had their own distinctive features and characteristics and she has liked them all. They were all saloon models, most powered with V8 motors.
Not long before Norm passed away he suggested to Jenny she should get a sports model. So she began thinking about that and last year looked at some Jaguars being sold in Christchurch. Among them was an XK8 sports coupe, the same colour as her first Jaguar. Jenny wondered what she should do, and then noticed the number plate contained her initials. That seemed like a good omen and helped the decision making process, so Jenny traded her Jaguar Sovereign saloon and came home in the 4.2 litre V8 Coupe. It was a good omen. Jenny says the XK8 is quite a change from her previous cars. The styling is different and there are two less doors but the traditional streamlined Jaguar styling and interior refinements remain. “I’m enjoying the sporty feel of the XK8 which is a delight to drive”, says Jenny who goes on to say “Because of their looks it’s no wonder people often liken Jaguars to cats on the prowl”. Others often tell Jenny her car sounds great, but she says that’s the one slight disadvantage of driving it – she doesn’t get to hear it from the inside. Jenny is enjoying contact with other owners and has been on some great outings with them. The XK8 is the seventh Jaguar in Jenny’s life and it’s a perfect match. Jenny and the XK8 are just right for one another. Jokingly Jenny says the lady who inspired her keenness for Jaguars set a high standard for her dream. A dream which has come true several times over, and along the way brought much happiness.

yundai New Zealand this week revealed the all-new NEXO, New Zealand’s first zero emissions hydrogen powered SUV. Whilst NEXO is Hyundai Motor Company’s second-generation of commercialised fuel cell electric vehicle, it’s a first for New Zealand. Hyundai New Zealand General Manager Andy Sinclair says: “This is truly an incredible milestone for Hyundai New Zealand to be able to introduce NEXO, a culmination of our cutting-edge technologies and the flagship of our growing eco-vehicle portfolio. “NEXO embodies our commitment to advanced eco-friendly vehicle development.” NEXO not only produces zero emissions, but also has an advanced air purification system which filters 99.9 per cent of very fine dust (PM2.5), emitting only water and clean air into the environment. An on-board electric motor produces a remarkable 120kW and a torque of 395 Nm, drawing power from an under-bonnet fuel cell stack, which combines oxygen from the surrounding air with hydrogen from NEXO’s high-pressure storage tanks. The result is electricity to power the

e new Supra is the first global model of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s GR sports car series. Ever since first competing in Germany’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race in 2007, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has been aiming through its motorsports activities to develop its cars and people, with the goal of “making ever-better cars.” The knowledge and know-how it has built up over the years have been funnelled into bringing the Supra back to life in the form of the “GR Supra”, as a car that people the world over will find fun to drive. “This is an iconic car, with an exciting spirit and large fan base,” says Andrew Davis, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of Marketing. “We knew with this car we had to do a public reveal, and the CRC Speedshow is the ideal venue for that. We would love to see all Supra fans there, for what will be a truly exciting reveal.” The Toyota site will also have on display the newly revealed TOYOTA GAZOO Racing FT60 race car, and the Toyota 86. This will be the first time the FT60 will be available for the public to view. The CRC Speedshow will run over the weekend of July 20-21 2019, at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.
motor and charge the battery. With full tanks of hydrogen on board, NEXO is capable of traveling 605km before it needs to refuel, which takes just a few minutes. “We are entering an exciting time in the evolution of motoring and we are proud to lead the charge in advancing fuel technologies globally and here in New Zealand. “The exact date for NEXO going to market in New Zealand ultimately depends on New Zealand’s ability to provide the infrastructure for the hydrogen fuelling stations. “New Zealand has an abundance of renewable electricity that could be used to produce hydrogen in a sustainable way,” adds Mr Sinclair. Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, said: “Hyundai has become a world leader in advancing alternative fuel technologies, and developing them to production maturity before its rivals. “Hot on the heels of its Kona Electric – arguably a game changer itself – Hyundai has quickly launched NEXO, a new, hydrogen-powered SUV you can buy right now. “Actually, it’s the latest of several generations of hydrogen fuel cell Hyundais, launched while most car makers are still years behind.”
