Bi-Turbo a tow-happy beast

T

here’s no substitute for cubic inches, so the saying goes. Well the 2019 Ford Wildtrak Bi-Turbo tends to make a lie of that saying, and the new 157kW/500Nm Bi-Turbo diesel engine and ten-speed automatic passed the towing test with flying colours. While the standard Ranger Wildtrak mirrors are a decent size, if you were towing a large boat or caravan on a regular basis you would probably want to fit extended-arm side view mirrors for an even better view of following vehicles. At hook-up time, the rear camera is a godsend thanks to the grid lines which illuminate on the screen and allow you to align the tow ball perfectly with the trailer hitch. Once the trailer is attached the grid lines disappear, which makes reversing the trailered boat onto a ramp or up a driveway much easier. The electric power steering of the Wildtrak has enough sensitivity at the helm that you can precisely manoeuvre the trailer where it needs to be. The diesel certainly notices a big load and needs a few more revs to get rolling but once under way the plentiful torque and close ratios mean progress is as smooth as you could want. Hill starts are never a problem with this rig, thanks to the Wildtrak’s hill launch assist which automatically engages when a gradient is anything more than three degrees, preventing the vehicle from roll-

ing either forward or back. The system will automatically engage when the driver presses the brake pedal, bringing the vehicle to a standstill, and the sensors detect that the vehicle is on a slope. The Wildtrak’s active cruise control provides greater regulation of uphill and downhill speed and allows the driver to

concentrate on ensuring the combination stays within the lane. This outstanding feature definitely makes long distance towing a great deal less stressful, but even on a short urban run it should prove more than worthwhile. The kerb weight of the Ranger Wildtrak is 2239kg. So by adding 400kg of human occupants,

plus 80 litres of fuel, that leaves around 480kg for whatever payload of luggage and provisions you might want to load into the tray, before hitting the vehicle’s legal GVM of 3200kg. So for those diehards who still reckon there’s no substitute for cubic inches, the Bi-Turbo Wildtrak more than proves otherwise.

T McLaren GT

he new McLaren GT toured the Goodwood estate for its global dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week in front of an audience of thousands. Just before midday the McLaren GT appeared. Taking the wheel of the rule-breaking McLaren GT, TV presenter Nicki Shields drove the car on its debut run up Goodwood Hill and its first dynamic public appearance. The McLaren GT completed four further hill runs throughout the afternoon with Le Mans class-winner Jonny Kane and GT racer Ollie Millroy taking over driving duties. The McLaren of Grand Tourers – McLaren’s modern interpretation of the classic GT – was revealed online on May 15. Superlight, yet supremely comfortable, the McLaren GT is powered by a 620PS 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, providing supercar performance. It accelerates from 0-100km/h (0-60mph) in 3.2 seconds and on to 326km/h (203mph), and can carry up to 570 litres of luggage – enough for a grand tour for two people. The McLaren GT also performs on the inside with luxurious trim options including Nappa leather, softgrain leather or Alcantara®, and seats unique to the McLaren GT that are designed for long distance comfort. The luggage bay can also be trimmed with SuperFabric®, developed to be resistant to stains, cuts, nicks and abrasions, as well as being breathable, easy to clean and quick to dry. The infotainment system is the company’s most sophisticated to date, featuring industry-standard HERE® navigation and real-time traffic information and it can also be linked to a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system. The McLaren GT is priced from £163,000. Visitors to McLaren House could also see the McLaren GT on display alongside the Speedtail Hyper-GT in addition to the 720S Spider, 600LT Spider, LEGO McLaren Senna, the 1998 Goodwood Hill record-holding MP4/13 and Niki Lauda’s 1984 F1 World Championship-winning MP4/2.

range of new-generation engines, striking design, significantly increased interior space and a third row of seats available on all models are highlights of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE. The highly anticipated large SUV, launched in July in its fourth-generation guise, has grown in size compared to the model it replaces with almost 70mm of extra legroom, and features a new generation of engines including a powerful inline six-cylinder diesel engine and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive standard across the range. The initial two-model range will be among the first Mercedes-Benz vehicles to arrive in New Zealand equipped with Mercedes me Connect as standard, which connects the owner to their vehicle in several new ways. Via the Mercedes me Connect app, the vehicle can be warmed up via Remote Start, the doors can be locked or unlocked, the

vehicle can be tracked or geofenced, an address can be sent to the vehicle navigation system, or nearby parking spaces may be located (subject to infrastructure). The owner will also be automatically notified of upcoming maintenance requirements, and can connect to a call centre at the press of one button in the case of an accident. Featuring a more spacious interior with almost 70mm more legroom in the rear seats, the GLE can be optionally fitted with a third row of seats. Extending seating capacity to seven in this Mercedes-Benz large SUV has not been possible locally since the first generation, which was badged as the M-Class. An updated version of the MBUX driver interface is standard in the GLE, including two side-by-side 12.3-inch digital screens, in addition to numerous options to set preferences and interact with many levels of settings, including the acclaimed ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice recognition system. A head-up display (HUD) is now standard across the range.

Not for the faint of heart A

fter blitzing the time that the Honda Civic Type R held for two years at the Nurburgring, the Renault Megane R.S Trophy-R became the fastest frontwheel drive car around the ring, a record that it still has. The incredibly hot French hatch burst onto the scene when it cut down the record that the Honda had held for two years on the ring, and now it is headed our way. Labelled the “most high performance production car Renault has ever put on the market,” the Trophy-R is not a hatchback for the faint of heart. The incredibly hot French hatch is based on the standard Megane RS Trophy, and uses the same 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, which produces 221kW and 400Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission exclusively sends all this power to the front wheels. While the Trophy-R shares quite a few similarities with the Trophy, the main difference is the weight figure. The curb weight has said to have been cut down by around 130kg without options. The alloy wheels have been replaced by a set of carbon fibre ones, the rear seats removed, and a carbon fibre bonnet installed. Renault didn’t stop with the performance parts there though; the Trophy-R sits on an all-new suspension system, Bridgestone Potenza tyres, and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. In Henry Ford fashion, the Trophy-R will only be offered in white, and Renault have started taking orders for January 2020 deliveries. The Trophy-R starts at $95K, which is a significant amount more than the $60K Honda Civic Type R, but it does come with the world’s fastest front-wheel drive production car bragging rights.

CX a family affair

I

magination drives us, says Mazda, as they clearly continue with their objective to deliver driving pleasure, but in easy-to-drive and live with packages. They certainly have done so with their latest Mazda3 range. But then that’s to be expected, for they have already done so with all of their CX family, from the smallest CX-3 to the largest CX-9. All of whom, including the CX-5 and CX-8 have similar distinctive, especially so from the front, CX family styling as well as Sky-activ driveline efficiency and lots of driver assitance and safety technology. Prices start at $31,395 for the entry-level CX-3, rising to $67,895 for the largest, and plushest, the seven seat CX-9 Takami. But – what is a Takami? Well, these high grade models sit above the usually top-of-the-range Limiteds. They add even more equipment and plushness, including nappa leather, to the already very well furnished cabins. Then while none of the CX family are hard-core off-roaders, there’s on-demand all-wheel-drive options for the CX-3, 5 and 8, while the CX-9s with their 220mm ground clearance have this as standard. So they are well set up for skifield roads, and more. I recently spent time with the latest, updated CX-3 GSX, the CX-5 Takami and CX-9 Takami, and late last year the CX-8 GSX AWD. So here’s pen-pictures of each – CX-3 GSX – $36,695 (others in four model range from $31,395 to $41,695 for the Takami). This small SUV has a 2-litre four cylinder petrol engine (2WD CX-5s use this as well) producing 109kW and 192Nm of torque, together with an smooth six-speed auto. A version of this gearbox which is used by all the CX range – with ratios and shift

management patterns tailored for each. This combination works very well, with the engine only becoming vocal at higher revs – something you don’t need to normally do. The stated overall fuel economy is 6.3L/100km. Size-wise those occupying the front seats in the stylish, practical cabin are very well catered for. However space in the rear, while very usable, is on the smaller side, as is luggage space. The GSX comes with keyless/push-button start, a pop-up heads up projection, adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance technology. Plus there’s a shared family look and function to the dash, touch screen and central command dial. I mentioned earlier driving pleasure, and here the CX-3 sets the standard, which the others repeat, with its sharp steering (10.6m turning circle), the contribution of the G-vectoring control and suitably firm suspension provide a great all-round drive. CX-5 Takami AWD – $61,495 (others in seven model range from $40,995 to $58,245). Here in NZ and world-wide, the CX-5 is Mazda’s best seller. Other than heated/ ventilated nappa leather seats, heated steering wheel and other detailing the main point of difference to the comprehensively-equipped Limited models is the engine. For the Takami, just like the CX-9, has a 2.5-litre, low-boost turbo-petrol engine which delivers a strong and consistent wave of 420Nm of torque at 2000rpm, just where needed for most effortless day to day driving. As well,170kW at 5000rpm, both using regular petrol. While that’s some 30kW and 168Nm more than the non-turbo engine, the

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

CX-5’s optional 2.2-litre diesel (which is also used by the CX-8) delivers 140kW and 450Nm, which the CX-5’s underpinnings and on-demand AWD easily cope with. In saying that, slight changes have been made to the Takami’s suspension, as well even more direct steering to preserve the excellent balance between its precise handling and ride. CX-5s are five-seaters, rated to tow 2000kg, and thisTakami’s quoted overall fuel consumption is 8.2L/100km. CX-8 GSX AWD $55,995 (GSX 2WD $53,495) As I did a full report in Guardian Motoring late last year on the CX-8, this is just a brief update. I note I was impressed with its blend of strong performance, handling (no surprises from what’s already been said) and quality cabin with its excellent seats, driving position and comprehensive driver/ safety assistance. While it sits on the same wheelbase as the CX-9, and provides a similar seven-seater package, it is not quite as wide. As well it is available only with the 2.2-litre diesel as mentioned above. This engine is so quiet that its hard to hear any diesel noises. CX-9 Takami $67,895 (GSX $59,695, Limited $65,259). This 5075mm long CX-9 Takami, comfort-wise proved to be the ultimate with passengers (particularly so all who sat

in the front and door-side second row) commenting on the comfort and feel of the soft, rich red wine coloured, nappa leather seats and their high grade surroundings. And that’s even before I drove away! There’s a full range of climate controls for the three rows of seats. I fitted comfortably into one of the two third row seats and would have been happy therein for the likes of a drive to Methven. The eager turbo-petrol has been mentioned above. This provides excellent performance with 0-100km/h possible in under 9 seconds, for like the others, there’s a driver selectable Sport mode. The quoted overall petrol use (again 91 octane) but probably not using Sport is 8.8l/100km. As well as providing an always cosseting ride, it corners very keenly and safely with well contained body movement and excellent grip from the on-demand all-wheeldrive system. Then of course it’s absolutely loaded with all the current safety and driver assistance technology. As for the other CXs, most drivers will much appreciate the easy to use layout of the instruments and controls.

FINALE So in this keenly contested SUV market, where the choices keep multiplying, Mazda, with their comprehensive range of good looking SUVs, all of which focus on quality and driver involvement, seem very well placed. They will be even more so with the arrival of the CX-30 later this year. Based on the new Mazda3 underpinnings, it will be powered by an innovative compression ignition, petrol engine!
