Modern MINI going electric

U

rban mobility with purely electric drive can now also be experienced in hallmark MINI style. The new MINI Cooper SE (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.8 – 14.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km*) makes it possible. It combines sustainable mobility with the riding fun, expressive design and premium quality that are typical of MINI. As such, the first solely electrically powered model of the British brand offers pure MINI feeling with locally emissions-free driving. The spontaneous power delivery of its 135 kW/184 hp motor, the brand-specific front-wheel drive, and the innovative driving dynamics system with wheel slip limiting close to the actuator, give the new MINI Cooper SE a particularly intense and unmistakable agility, known as the go-kart feeling. Its model-specific lithium-ion battery enables a range of 235 to 270 kilometres. The high-voltage battery is situated deep in the vehicle floor, ensuring there are no limitations in terms of luggage compartment volume as compared to the conventionally powered MINI 3 Door. With the new MINI Cooper SE,

the British brand once again sets a pioneering impetus for urban mobility. 60 years ago, the revolutionary design principle of the classic Mini established the basis for maximum interior space within a minimum surface area. The MINI was launched in 2001 – a modern re-interpretation of creative space usage and unique riding fun that became the original in the premium segment of small cars. The new MINI Cooper SE will be the first purely electric premium small car, paving the way to a sustainable yet at the same time highly emotional driving experience in urban traffic. The new MINI Cooper SE is produced in the brand’s home country. It comes off the production line at the MINI plant in Oxford along with the conventionally powered versions of the model. Its drive technology comes from the BMW Group competence centres for electromobility in Dingolfing and Landshut. Powerful proportions, the typical three-part structure consisting of the body frame, all-round greenhouse and roof, short overhangs and widely set wheels are again the characteristic features that set the first purely electrically powered MINI apart from the masses.

EXPLORE MORE CORNERS. EXPLORE THE MINI 5-DOOR HATCH AT CHRISTCHURCH MINI GARAGE.

SEE THE ROAD IN A NEW LIGHT. The new LED headlights offer greater visibility with a more powerful light. Optional headlights with the latest Matrix technology and cornering aid give you the ability to see parts of the road that would otherwise be left in the dark.

A NOD TO OUR ROOTS. Celebrate MINI Heritage with innovative ag designs in the LED rear lights. The lights are not just eye-catching – they’re more energy efficient and give a brighter, clearer shine. Reimagined for modern driving, these striking lights are formed as a twopart LED Union Flag, surrounded by a chrome frame.

STEP UP THE PERFORMANCE. The 7-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with double clutch makes shifting gears exceptionally dynamic. It uses a precision-tuned electronic gear shifting system that offers seamless transitions with the ability to choose between manual and automatic shift mode. The start/stop function makes driving more economical, too, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. John Cooper Works models have optional 8-speed steptronic automatic transmission available.

t’s probably fair to say at any given time some members of the Vintage Car Club will have restoration projects on the go. The vehicles vary, as does the extent of the restoration work. Each year the club invites members who have completed a project to have their end result considered for the Restoration of the Year Award. This year four members submitted their restored vehicles for consideration and club chairman Trevor Begg said because of the high standards exhibited the task undertaken by the judges was challenging. Of the four entries, three were Veterans – vehicles constructed prior to 31 December 1918. Ultimately Gavin and Annette Hunt received the 2019 Award, in recognition of the restoration of their 1903 Darracq. The car has been in the Hunt family for around 94 years. Gavin’s late father Henry recalled travelling with one of his sisters in the back of the Darracq on a trip to Staveley about 1925. At a later date something broke on the car, so the engine was removed and used as a power source in Gavin’s grandfather’s blacksmith shop. Gavin’s father had the presence of mind to store some parts, including the suspension. At one stage he tried – without much luck – to source other parts, then around Christmas 2014 the thought of restoration resurfaced and Gavin decided maybe he could help. In Gavin’s words: “I retired and started restoring”. Parts came from all over the place; like a front axle from Adelaide and a gearbox and differential from a friend. Because the gearbox was from a slightly later model Gavin, a skilled engineer, rebuilt the box and actually made reverse and second gears. The differential was narrowed and hubs and axles were made. A piece of the original chassis had been kept and this enabled Gavin to construct a new one. As it turned out he had to build another front axle, after discovering the one sourced from Australia was different, but the kingpin and stub assembly could be used. A friend made the wooden body and Gavin a made a new bonnet using measurements from the car in Adelaide. The original brass water pump was missing, so Gavin made one, based on photographs. Finding the gearing was too high, Gavin made another pinion which, combined with new authentic wheels, brought the gearing ratio back to the original 5:1. Gavin’s skill is also reflected in the new parts such as the fuel, water and oil tanks which he has made. He refinned the radiator with copper to prevent overheating and re-metaled the big end bearings. The hubcap, radiator brackets, hinges and other fittings were all made from brass and are as close as possible to original. A wonderful milestone along the restoration path was having the car mobile for Henry’s 100th birthday, when Gavin was able to take his father for a ride. It was a special and momentous occasion. Now 116 years old, the Darracq has again become a much admired veteran car, thanks to the dedication of its talented owners and the foresight of Gavin’s late father Henry, who retained parts. There is no doubt about it – Gavin and Annette deserve their award.

Darracq once a respected name

A

utomobiles Darracq France was a manufacturer of motor vehicles and aero engines in Suresnes, near Paris. The enterprise, known at first as A Darracq et Cie, was founded in 1896 by successful businessman Alexandre Darracq. Originally the company made bicycles then produced their first four wheel internal combustion engine powered car in 1900. This of course means the delightful 1903 model owned by the Hunt family is amongst the earliest models produced. Innovative ideas were introduced and Darracq cars set speed records. In late 1904 the chairman reported sales were up by 20 per cent though increased costs meant the profit had risen more slowly.

But what was more important was they had many more orders than they could fill and the only solution was to enlarge the factory by as much as 50 per cent. Twelve months later the chairman was able to tell shareholders all the six speed records of the automobile world were held by Darracq cars. But, like many other early motor manufacturers, Darracq suffered financial and other issues and the company was ultimately taken over and the name was eventually discontinued.

The future of luxury

S

ometimes there’s just no substitute for old school and there’s no doubt Bentley, celebrating their 100th birthday this month, is masterful at balancing time-honoured methodology with the newest technology and letting that manifest tastefully into the final product. Touring the brand’s Crewe production plant, the very same facility that assembled Merlin engines to power Spitfires during the war, we see high-tech machinery working in unison with skilled craftsmen and women. On one side of the floor huge laser cutters form precision upholstery and interior pieces, on the other workers take four years learning how to laminate Bentley’s renowned wood veneers and fine tuning the organic material for final fit. They join a pool of expert upholsterers sewing seats and trim with remarkable precision. Without question, there’s a level of manual labour on the production line that’s massively disproportionate to other production plants I’ve seen. But you may have heard, we’re amidst the automotive revolution. Cars are becoming less and less analogue by the minute and electric motors aren’t artisan like a Merlin V-12 was. Are we to believe Bentley can maintain the hands-on craftsmanship forged over the last century in tomorrow’s world of autonomy? Bentley don’t just believe they can, they’re doubling down as we join the world’s media at the global reveal of the striking EXP 100 GT design study. Sadly, this 5.8 metre behemoth of polished aluminium and copper is not planned for production. But it does signify the start point of Bentley’s technology and design roadmap until 2035. And with luxurious, sustainable materials like paint formulated from rice husks, 5000 year-old rescued wood infused with copper and an eye on built-by-hand components as there is now, Bentley workers aren’t at risk of becoming mere parts fitters anytime soon. In fact, as Bentley’s strategy is brought to life we can expect it to spawn a new wave of ‘digital craftspeople’. They will forge the future of luxury mobility, which for Bentley, focuses heavily on experience and luxury services. The EXP 100 GT offers a Bentley virtual assistant, allows real-time health and wellbeing monitoring via bio-metric seats and the smart glass roof, engage your children with live educational content like

explaining cloud formations as they pass overhead. Your personal AI profile and memories captured from previous drives can be reused to replicate a sun-soaked driving experience, even if the real world is grey and overcast. Bentley also aims to introduce light as a new material in which to convey luxury. All new generations will start to deploy an illuminated version of the familiar fly-

ing B bonnet emblem and the use of light will only grow more impressive with each generation from there. The EXP 100 GT’s seat and dash materials are interwoven with fibre optic lighting for a distinctly pleasant environment. When you’re not cooling a combustion engine, the front grille presents many possibilities to play with lighting and 3D printing of all manner of materials. Headlights are hand-cut crystal and

rospective drivers of the already innately city-friendly Audi A1 will soon have the option to make their car look even more urban-ready by choosing a new citycarver specification that takes a tougher stance. New citycarver versions of the A1 will be available to order in the UK in conjunction with 30 TFSI and 35 TFSI petrol engines from September, and will begin arriving with customers in the autumn. The design of the 4.04-metre Audi A1 citycarver is based on the A1 Sportback, but it has a more muscular look achieved primarily through wheel arch enhancements and redesigned sills in a contrasting colour, underbody protection in a stainless steel finish and raised suspension giving around four centimetres of additional ground clearance for easier entry and better visibility. Its large, octagonal Singleframe is also reminiscent of the Audi Q models, and surrounds a strongly sculpted honey-

around the back high definition OLED screens replace rear lamps, delivering configurable and evolving aesthetics, improved visibility and potential messaging of other road users. Between today and 2035, Bentley envisage hybrid fuel cell together with batteries as the best mid-term powertrain solution to the luxury sector and the EXP 100 GT is no exception with 100kW of power supplied via fuel cell and a further 500kW via four electric motors. Batteries can be charged via the hydrogen fuel cell or from the plug. It all looks hyper-futuristic, but in reality Bentley aren’t making spaceships here. While cost prohibitive to scale for immediate production, the technology and production techniques showcased are realistically all within arm’s reach right now. Bentley has given themselves quite the birthday present with the EXP 100 GT, celebrating their 100 years of craftsmanship while also firmly reassuring dedication to a hand-built and technology-rich future. comb insert painted in matt black. Two characteristic slots above the grille differentiate it from the A1 Sportback. At the rear, a new look bumper echoes the robust look of the front end. The colour palette for the A1 citycarver includes nine exterior options, which can be optionally combined, depending on the colour chosen. In the interior, typically intelligent Audi design neatly integrates an 8.8-inch MMI touch screen and 10.25-inch fully digital cockpit display to take care of the majority of functions and position the A1 citycarver as one of the most technologically advanced cars of its type. Its capability can be expanded even further by adding the optional Technology Pack incorporating the Audi virtual cockpit with an increased range of views and functions, MMI navigation plus bringing a larger 10.1-inch high resolution screen, Audi connect and the Audi Phone Box facilitating wireless smartphone charging.
