RAV4 has a strong SUV character

T

he TNGA platform has allowed the Toyota engineers and designers to create a cross-octagonal style body shape which gives the NextGen RAV4 a strong SUV character and great on-road presence. The newly developed E-Four allwheel-drive system automatically optimises the distribution of power to the front and rear wheels in all Next-Gen RAV4 Hybrid models. In normal on-road driving the E-Four system distributes more driving force from the electric motor to the rear wheels at take-off which suppresses any unwanted slippage from the front wheels, and provides you with enhanced acceleration, improved steering stability and reduced understeer when cornering in the Next-Gen RAV4 Hybrid. When driving off-road the E-Four system has greatly increased the torque output to the rear wheels providing you with more powerful hill climbing ability on rough terrain. The Next-Gen RAV Limited Hybrid is discretely distinguished on the road by its exclusive gloss black finished 18-inch alloy wheels and in addition it also offers you a greater touch of luxury and better view of the outside world thanks to a tilt and slide glass sunroof. Knowing that New Zealanders like you have active and busy lifestyles, Toyota has not compromised on the specification of safety features for the Next-Gen RAV. Toyota Safety Sense is standard from the entry

level GX model to the top-of-the-range Adventure. Toyota Safety Sense features pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking (PCS with AEB), as well as vehicle, pedestrian, and daytime cyclist detection functions. In addition, the new RAV4 range also features lane tracing assist with lane departure alert function (LTA with LDA), steering assist, and lane centring function. It also provides all-speed dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC), while road sign assist (RSA) and automatic high beam (AHB) will allow you to focus more easily on the road ahead. Yet more safety features for the NextGen RAV4 Hybrid Limited include blind spot monitor (BSM), rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), trailer sway control (TSC) for greater confidence when towing, and the all-important panoramic view monitor

with dynamic guidelines as well as front and rear parking sensors. Inside the cabin of the Next-Gen RAV4 there is an 8-inch audio display for greater clarity of the satellite navigation system and the new colour multi information display provides all the car’s information in a format that is quick and easy to read. To make parking even easier for you the Next-Gen RAV4 Limited FWD has a 360 degree panoramic view monitor. Other convenience features include a power back door, powered leather accented driver’s seat and driver’s lumbar adjustment, as well as front seat heaters. “The demand for the new RAV4, has been unprecedented for Toyota in New Zealand,” says Toyota New Zealand general manager Neeraj Lala. “Introducing the hybrid variants in particular are doing very well for us as

customers look for fuel efficient and performance. “We have also seen that customers are willing to wait because quite simply it is a great vehicle and represents exceptional value. “It also helps that RAV4 is better than anything else in the small SUV market at the moment. “For 25 years RAV4 has been pioneering the way, it’s New Zealand’s biggest selling volume SUV and it looks like that is not set to change any time soon.” The 1500kg maximum braked towing capacity of Next-Gen RAV4 Hybrid matches the non-hybrid 2.5-litre models and proves its ability as a no-compromise SUV. From Toyota Safety Sense to a fully connected cabin, from a keyless smart entry to an 8-inch audio display, the Next-Gen RAV4 is more advanced than any of its predecessors. Next-Gen RAV4 is a no compromise SUV designed to meet the needs of active, adventurous and sustainably-conscious New Zealanders who are both young and young at heart. The next-gen RAV4 Hybrid is the fastest, most powerful ever. Boasting 219 combined net total system horsepower transfered to all four wheels. Just when you think the Next-Gen RAV4 couldn’t get any more adventurous. The RAV4 Adventure Grade up-ends the rules yet again, bringing classic outdoor design and features to an already impressive vehicle.

The famous fifth Beatle Bernard Egan MOTORING

F

ifty years ago this week, while a London bobby stopped traffic, photographer Iain Macmillan was given ten minutes to shoot what has become a famous

photo. Standing precariously on a ladder, he took six photos of the group who had become known as the Fab Four. They were of course The Beatles, and in the photo they are striding out in single file over the zebra crossing outside the now historically-recognised Abbey Road Recording Studios. Six photos were taken, from which Paul McCartney picked one that features John Lennon leading the band, followed by Ringo Starr, McCartney himself, and George Harrison. The photographer produced a great photo, which is immortalised on the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album. Job done, great result and four already well-known people gained additional fame. But – inadvertently the photographer had included another Beetle in the photo. Besides the band’s legendary walk, the cover features a Volkswagen Beetle, parked next to the zebra crossing with the number plate LMW 281F. Unlike the band, the Volkswagen had no previous claim to fame whatsoever. But that all changed once the album cover appeared and the white Volkswagen has often been referred to as the fifth Beatle. Around the time there were widespread rumours of Paul McCartney’s death. He was said to have died after crashing his Aston Martin. Conspiracy theorists decided the famous photo contained subliminal messages confirming their theory, likening the photo to a funeral procession. They suggested John Lennon’s white suit symbolised the colour of mourning in some Eastern religions, while Ringo Starr is wearing the more traditional black. George Harrison is wearing denim – the colour of mourning in Canada – and just to add to it all Paul McCartney’s cigarette is in his non-dominant right hand, even though he is left handed. This led the conspiracy theorists to suggest an imposter was walking with the rest of the band. And, what’s more, they pointed out Paul McCartney’s feet are bare. Why, they asked. It’s a reminder, said the theorists, that in some cultures the dead are buried without their shoes. Paul McCartney said afterwards it was simply a hot day and he was keeping his feet cool. As far as the clothes are concerned, apart from George Harrison, the band members were dressed up in suits designed by Tommy Nutter, the famous designer known for reinventing the Savile Row suit during the 1960s. The poor little previously unremarkable Volkswagen Beetle got dragged into it too. Did the letters on license plate LMW 218 indicate Paul’s wife Linda McCartney Weeps?

■■ Paul McCartney came up with a reportedly last-minute idea for the Abbey Road cover and drew sketches to outline his thoughts. ■■ There was a very limited window of opportunity and in the absence of managers or stylists the whole photo shoot was done and dusted very quickly. ■■ The now famous photo was chosen by Paul, who examined all the photos under a microscope. ■■ Photo number 5 was the only one in which

Or did the white Volkswagen – which was quite young at the time – represent a hearse which had carried Paul off to the after-world? Being a German car, did the Volkswagen somehow refer to the Beatles’ early days in Hamburg? The answers to all the aforementioned questions are simply – no. There is a much more unassuming explanation.

every member of the band had their legs in a perfect V formation. ■■ The Abbey Road crossing gained Grade II protected status in 2010, meaning that it is recognised as nationally important and of special interest, and it has become a shrine for Beatle fans. ■■ John Lennon owned a VW Beetle (not this one) convertible and the group had travelled in a VW Combi Van. ■■ Pavement parking is now banned in London.

The white Volkswagen Beetle belonged to one of the people living in the block of flats across from the studio. The owner who had “pavement parked” the car wasn’t located, so the car couldn’t be moved and that’s how it became famous as the fifth beetle. It was later sold at auction for $23,000, but not before its number plate was repeatedly stolen after the album’s release. The now-famous Volkswagen Beetle is

displayed in a museum in Germany. Like many conspiracy theories, all these were of course a load of old codswallop. Or maybe we could be kinder and say those who came up with these ideas from left field were just using their imaginations, just as John Lennon in his song Imagine encouraged us to do. The car isn’t alone in unexpectedly ending up in the photo. An American tourist named Paul Cole said he is the man standing on the pavement to the right. He wasn’t aware of the photo shoot, but is very happy to be a part of the historical album cover. There are so many reasons why objects like cars find a place in history. Take, for example, the Bentleys forever associated with Le Mans and the James Bond Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5. But it was simply pure coincidence the white VW was in the space of just ten minutes skyrocketed to fame by a photographer who set out capture the images of the Fab Four, but ended up creating the Fab Five.

Left – The ‘Lennon’ Beetle as displayed in the VW Autostadt, Wolfsburg Museum is a UK registered 1968 Lotus White 1500 model – the same car as seen parked in the famous 1969 Abbey Road album cover.

Look what I found in the barn!

F

inding a 50-year-old supercar stashed away in a dusty barn in the middle of a forest is something that most automotive enthusiasts can only dream of, but it turns out that things like that do exist. It may sound like a fairytale, but this completely stock Lamborghini Miura has been stashed in a German barn for the past few years, and is now heading to auction at RM Sotheby’s. First purchased from Lamborghini back in 1971, this Miura was owned by an advertising executive for three years, before selling it to an amateur racing driver by the name of Hans-Peter Weber. Weber ending up keeping the car until his death in 2015, and he put a fair few miles on it in that time. After Weber’s death, the car was taken to a friend’s barn in the Black Forest of Germany, and has lived there ever since. The car, which has been valued at around $1.5 million, only has 29,020 kilometres on the clock. While it may not be the most pristine Miura in the world, this one is valued so high because of its factory state. With the exception of the front turn signals, and the seat belts, this car is completely standard. Barn finds can range from rusted out junk to pristine pieces of art, and it looks like this old Lamborghini sits somewhere in the middle. There are a few scuffs here and there, and the spider webs scattered around the wheels don’t add

any value, but certainly add character. As you can see from the marks above the exhaust pipes, this Miura is unapologetically raw, and it looks like the 3.9-litre V12 was well-loved during its ownership. Not many Miuras cross the auction block these days, so Maarten ten Holder of RM Sotheby’s excitement is expected. “Any Miura S is rare and desirable in its own right, but the car we are selling in London is an opportunity that would be very hard to repeat,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say that for many collectors an original Miura such as this, is the ultimate prize. “We are confident it will attract interest from around the globe.”

In addition, a Lotus-dedicated Gentlemen Drivers – GT cars to 1965 race took place last weekend – a race category harking back to when the renowned Lotus race cars, from the late 1950s to early 1960s such as the Lotus Eleven, Elite and Type 23 would have competed around the 21 km Nordschleife (North Loops) circuit. The Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD) (Germany’s oldest Germany’s automobile association) presented Lotus with a special award for its pioneering contribution to the automotive industry. Lotus has an enviable history at the Nürburgring with legendary drives and victories over the years at the “Green Hell”. Stirling Moss won the German GP for the first time in a Lotus in August 1961 in a heavily modified Type 18/21 and the great Jim Clark won again in 1965 in a Type 33, but it was at the Nürburgring 10000 km in 1962 that Lotus and Jim Clark cemented their reputation for the future. Retaining the personality and natural ability of the road-going Lotus Evora, the GT4 Concept builds on the brand’s advanced lightweight engineering expertise to deliver a race car that perfectly encapsulates the company’s competitive spirit. Proving its already undoubted racing credentials, the last generation of Evora GT4 won prestigious championships and races at the most famous tracks around the world, including British GT, Dubai 24hrs, Barcelona 24hrs, European GT4, Sepang 12hrs the Pirelli World Championship and most recently crowned vice-champion in the Swedish GT Series with Cyan Racing in 2018. A testament to the inherent ability of the Evora, the evolution of the new GT4 capitalises on the car’s already advanced road platform which was heavily influenced by Lotus motorsport-inspired engineering. The current Lotus model range of the Elise, Exige and Evora are all testaments to what driving is all about – Lotus is, and always has been for the drivers!

Red for GO I t was already eye-catching enough. Now, a powerful shade of red is taking e-mobility to the top from a visual perspective too – the Volkswagen ID.R will sport a special livery for its record attempt on Tianmen Mountain in China. The red stands for the fully-electric, 500-kW (680-PS) prototype’s fifth record attempt, this time in China, and with it the next milestone in this project. Volkswagen is also pursuing a broad electromobility offensive in the important Chinese market. As the racing precursor to the ID.

family, due for launch in the Land of the Dragon in 2020, the ID.R will attempt to set a record for the ascent of Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road, which features no fewer than 99 tight hairpins. The ten-kilometre road to Heaven’s Gate is regarded as one of the most demanding mountain roads in the world. It is situated in a breathtaking landscape, which attracts millions of tourists every year. This challenge reflects the widely visible logo of the now red ID.R. The stylised silhouette of Tianmen Mountain and its 99 hairpins is backed up by the motto “Race the Future”.
