New 1 Series: dynamic excellence

T

he arrival of the all-new BMW 1 Series (fuel consumption combined: 7.1-3.8 l/100 km [39.8 – 74.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 162-100 g/km*) heralds the dawn of a new era. The third generation of the successful premium compact model draws back the curtain on the new BMW front-wheeldrive architecture, which fuses BMW’s signature driving pleasure and dynamic excellence with a significant increase in interior space. Sporty, cool, safe and classy, sprinkled with fresh design and the latest in connectivity, the all-new 1 Series is a proper BMW, but one with a strong character all its own. Cutting-edge chassis systems and innovative technologies, plus the integration of all key driving dynamics components and control systems, imbue the BMW 1 Series with an increase in agility that drivers of cars with both the new front-wheel-drive configuration and BMW xDrive intelligent allwheel drive will clearly recognise. To this end, a five-year process of development has seen BMW channel all the experience amassed by the BMW Group over recent years with front-wheeldrive technology in other models into the new 1 Series. The result is a dynamic sharpness unprecedented in front-wheel-drive cars, with which it sets new standards in the premium compact class, and it’s being released in New Zealand at $49,900+orc for the 118 Sport Line Edition.

Hosting the show premiere of the new BMW 1 Series, meanwhile, will be the IAA event in Frankfurt am Main in September 2019. More than 1.3 million examples of the BMW 1 Series have been produced in its first two generations, the car proving

especially popular in Europe. The third-generation model offers significantly more space than its predecessor with little change to its exterior footprint, thanks to the cutting-edge BMW frontwheel-drive architecture. The new face of the BMW 1 Series and

its fresh interpretation of iconic BMW features can be seen clearly from the front. The signature BMW kidney grille is now larger, with far greater presence. For the first time in this model range, the two kidneys now merge in the middle.

CHOOSE YOUR X. THE ALL-NEW BMW X RANGE. From the rebel to the athlete, the boss to the beast; there’s a BMW X to suit every lifestyle. Choose your world then find the vehicle that reflects its needs. Lovely style will be missed Bernard Egan MOTORING

T

hose of us – and there are a lot – who eagerly await the arrival of and then enjoy reading Beaded Wheels, the official magazine of the Vintage Car Club of NZ, will notice a change when the next issue appears. A favourite column will be missing. After eleven years, local stalwart of vintage motoring and Patroness of the Ashburton Branch Diane Ross has decided to retire from contributing her very popular and widely read Brass Notes. In acknowledging Diane’s involvement, Kevin Clarkson, chairman of the Beaded Wheels publishing committee, says over almost 70 issues she has been absolutely dedicated and has never missed an edition of the magazine between August 2008 and the latest copy. Written in a delightful style, which reflects Diane’s personality, Brass Notes have been chocker full of information about veteran vehicles – those manufactured before January 1 1919 – and their owners. Somehow Diane has always known what’s going on all around the country. Having held official positions both locally and nationally, Diane not only knows a lot about the club and the vehicles, but most importantly she has a huge network of friends. Her columns have always proved interesting because she has combined technical information and details like the provenance or whereabouts of vehicles with stories about fellow enthusiasts. Initially Diane agreed to write one column following the untimely passing of the previous contributor.

Rob and Diane Ross doing what they do well – veteran motoring.

Diane chose the title Brass Notes partly because brass is associated with veteran vehicles and also because Brass formed part of the previous headline. By adding Notes to the title, Diane combined a reference to her love of music with her enthusiasm for recording history. In her final column Diane says the veteran part of the club is very important, because that is where the organisation be-

gan and those pioneers, their vehicles and their history should never be forgotten. Because of Diane’s remarkable contribution so much of that history has been preserved. By her own admission Diane became involved in vintage motoring after having an “if I can’t beat it I might as well join it” moment. Husband Rob was well and truly in-

volved and it wasn’t long before Diane caught the bug too. And Diane now says that moment has lasted a long time. Everyone is glad about that and of course also grateful to Rob. She might be stepping back from writing Brass Notes, but Diane says she’ll still have her ear to the ground and of course be actively involved in club activities.

Crash trauma ‘isolating experience’ Smiles for Miles on again

I

n 2003, Sarah Dean was involved in one serious and near-fatal car crash followed by a further moderate car crash ten months later. She sustained injuries from both crashes. Thankfully Sarah has recovered well from the injuries she sustained and is very fortunate to be able to maintain a fit and active lifestyle. “Post-accidents were really difficult times,” she said. “What was so hard was that I didn’t personally know anyone who had been involved in a road crash. I then started to look for relevant support services, just anything, and there wasn’t. “It was quite an isolating experience for me personally”. Sarah goes on to say “several years passed and I kept hearing similar stories, and I knew the community would be suffering so more work needed to be done.” So she established the Road Traffic Accident Trauma Charitable Trust (RTATCT) That was nine years ago, and in 2016 she organised and co-ordinated the Trust’s first public event, Road Accident Remembrance Day, held in Christchurch with the support of emergency services. Sarah was inspired to found the Trust when she undertook a research study on those affected by road trauma and its im-

plications affecting post-accident care and recovery, including rehabilitation. She wanted to ensure adequate support, education and advice was provided to those directly affected by road trauma. Sarah then partnered with Professor Neville Blampied former Head of Psychology Department, University of Canterbury and they co-founded the Trust together. The Trust is now undertaking a series of Road Shows and Sarah is bringing the next one to Ashburton on Wednesday September 11. Taking place in the Balmoral Hall at 7.00pm that evening the Road Show will feature a line-up including accident first responders, emergency personnel and medical professionals. It will be a wonderful opportunity to hear their stories and to find ways to assist those facing trauma.

The effects of accidents can be likened to the ripples which follow a stone being dropped into a pool of water. Sadly so many of us have to one extent or other experienced those effects and have no doubt wondered how best to deal with them either personally or in our wish to support others. The Road Show will provide a forum to hear about the emergency and post-accident care and recovery response to road crashes, some speakers will briefly highlight and provide an insight into the effects of road crashes have had on them personally, while also providing an insight into the support available. There is no charge to attend the Road Show but a gold coin donation to assist with expenses would be gratefully accepted. For more information about RTATDC visit www.roadtrafficaccidenttrust.org.nz

ot some time to spare on Saturday afternoon? Even if you haven’t you might want to make some, because the famous Smiles for Miles is on again tomorrow between 11.00am and 2.00pm. It’s happening at the Ryal Bush Yard, situated opposite the VCC club rooms on Maronan Road. There will be a complimentary barbecue for all drivers of vehicles. The organisers say “The event is guaranteed to put a smile on your face as well as on the face of the person in the passenger seat”. There will be quite a few trucks, hot rods and other vehicles so just turn up and have a ball.

Happy 60th Birthday!

O

ne of the most iconic cars of the 20th century – the humble Mini – celebrates the 60th anniversary of its worldwide release this year and enthusiasts are set to celebrate with the biggest ever Mini gathering in New Zealand. Tauranga Mini Owners Club will host the NZ Mini Nationals over Labour Weekend this year with a packed schedule of events that will bring together more than 200 examples of the automotive icon. There are 14 Mini owner clubs around the country who have been taking turns to host the Mini Nationals since 1994, and they are a special on every Mini devotee’s calendar. “It’s going to be a great event for Mini-lovers and we are determined to make it the largest gathering of Minis seen in New Zealand,” explained Tauranga Mini Owners Club Chair Gayle Hardie. The club have secured a great central location on Cliff Road which provides ample space for the Show & Shine on Saturday morning where Minis compete to be the best in their chosen category. “It’s a thrill to see the variety of Minis all in one place from early Mk I models through to the 2019 60th anniversary limited edition,” says Gayle. “The Clubman, Moke, Riley Elf, Rover, vans and utes will all be represented as well as some impressive custom build projects and hopefully a couple of ex racing or rally cars. “One of my personal favourites is a 1970 Mini Cooper S, an ex-Australian

Police pursuit car fully restored to original condition believed to be valued in excess of $50,000.” • Latest facelift “We’ll create a festive • atmosphere 15,000km with food trucks, trade • stalls, 2.8L giveaways Turbo Diesel and there’s a prize drawer if you vote for People’s Choice so we hope the public will

come along to join in the celebrations.” Initially created in response to the Suez oil crisis, the Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and took to the road for the first time in 1959. It quickly established pop-culture status which ensured decades of production

around the world in a variety of guises. Well over five million Minis were sold worldwide, including around 70,000 in New Zealand. The Mini Cooper was fully imported from Great Britain, which gave ownership a somewhat elevated status.

Ranger – designed to impress

T

he Ford Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo Special Edition will be offered as part of the 2020.25MY Ford Ranger line-up arriving from December this year. Based on the volume-selling, highly equipped Ranger XLT double-cab, the return of the FX4 nameplate brings with it an even more distinctive identity, with unique design elements inside and out for a fresh take on Ranger’s renowned versatility. “We are excited to be able to offer our customers the new FX4 with the Bi-Turbo engine alongside the class-leading ten speed automatic transmission. “To have the addition of both a 4WD and 2WD Ranger FX4 really steps things up for them and it is the first time we have offered the Bi-Turbo/10-Speed combination in a 2WD Ranger,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand. “And it’s all wrapped in its very own design elements and features, to offer customers a Ranger with a genuine identity as a stand-alone model.” The Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo sits between the Ranger XLT and highly equipped Ranger Wildtrak models, giving customers greater choice with a unique package that offers the same great capability and dependability for which Ranger is known.

Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo with more

The Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo brings a host of new – and unique – features to the Ranger customer, which are apparent from first glance. The Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo has a unique front mesh grille, finished in Ebony Black, flanked by darkened versions of the BiLED High Performance Headlights introduced for Ranger XLT, Wildtrak and Ranger Raptor. The front-end view also brings an Ebony Black lower valence and mirror caps to create a strong FX4 identity. New FX4 specific 18-inch alloy wheels, an inch larger than the Ranger XLT’s 17inch alloys, continue the black detailing, with black DLO, door handles and front guard fender feature contrasting the striking red FX4 lower front door and tailgate decals, all with a 3D effect. Completing the look, the FX4’s tray hosts a protective bed liner and an extended black-finish sports bar, adding a stand-out visual attribute to the Ranger FX4’s load area. The extensive black treatment applied to the outside is designed to impress with the five exterior colour choices for Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo, which consist of Shadow Black, Arctic White, True Red, Meteor Grey and Aluminium Metallic.

Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo exterior enhancements:

in Tinted Graphite to further bring out the Race Red detailing throughout the cabin.

• Darkened Bi-LED High Performance headlights • FX4 mesh front grille in Ebony Black finish • 18-inch FX4 alloy wheels • 3D effect FX4 front door decal in distinctive red • 3D effect FX4 tailgate decal • Black-finished FX4 extended sports bar • Ebony Black exterior mirrors, door/ tailgate handles and fender features

Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo interior: distinctive upgrades The Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo’s cabin hits the

right notes with specific FX4 front seating. The sports bucket seats are leather-accented with a special pattern design, and are embossed with striking red FX4 logos on the seatbacks. These complement the contrasting Race Red stitching that’s been applied to the gear selector, handbrake boot and the Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo’s steering wheel, door trim and special FX4-branded floor mats. Bolstering the overall effect is the Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo’s premium black ‘soft top’ instrument panel, inspired by Ranger Wildtrak, while the door tops are finished

Taming the Ring

C

yan Racing, formerly named Polestar, has broken two Nürburgring lap records during development of the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept, making it the fastest four-door car and the fastest front-wheel driven car in the world around the fearsome 21-kilometre Nordschleife circuit. This also marks the first time that a Chinese manufacturer has claimed a record on the legendary German circuit with a mass production-based car. The 528-hp Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 20.143 seconds, averaging 170.4 km/h, with Thed Björk, the 2017 World Champion of touring car racing, behind the wheel. The race engineers and drivers of Cyan Racing, the official motorsport partner to Geely Group Motorsport, have developed the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept as a road car version of the race car run by the team in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).

For the first time, Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo is offered with the latest generation 2.0 litre Bi-Turbo, 10-speed powertrain as standard on either the 4WD or 2WD. With 157kW/500Nm, the Bi-Turbo powertrain was first introduced on the Ford Performance Ranger Raptor and is fitted with the specifically tuned, new generation 10-speed paddle shift automatic. The 10-speed automatic includes a lockout feature to hold specific gears when towing, giving the Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo a towing capacity of 3500Kg braked. In addition to the highly capable towing, the Bi-Turbo brings a fuel efficiency figure of 6.7 litres/100km combined for the 2WD and 7.4 litres/100km combined on the 4WD, showing the depth of its capabilities. The Ranger FX4 Bi-Turbo Special Edition will be available alongside the full 2020.25MY Ford Ranger line-up in Ford Dealerships from December 2019. Ford NZ will announce pricing closer to arrival.
