If you’ve spent any time in a garden centre lately, you may have noticed more and more clever contraptions and designs appearing to help the tiniest creatures in our backyard flourish. For those keen to help protect the wildlife and encourage more birds, butterflies, honeybees, and good creepy crawlies into your garden, there’s plenty of creations to add to your wishlist. From butterfly houses and feeders (where they can stop to shelter during the winter and feed during the summer) to wildbird nesting boxes, the

range of supplies out there is endless. Oamaru-based company, Topflite, has a range of products out on the market now that features wild bird seed bells, coconut shells and nectar feeders that help provide nutrients when food is scarce. To attract more butterflies into your neck of the woods, check out the Monarch Butterfly New Zealand Trust, for more advice on these beautiful creatures, learn to discover pests, and how about the tagging programme works. You can also plant any spare spaces in your garden with pollinator-friendly

seeds. There are some great pre-mixes available now and Yates even offers a Butterfly Field Mix, containing 33 selected varieties, including swan plant, asclepias (tropical milkweed), cosmos (Mexican aster), signet marigold, sunflower, zinnia and california poppy. Lavender, and a good variety of herbs, are also essential for the home garden. Other tips to help our pollinating friends is to use insecticides sparingly, or even better, look for more eco-friendly products. Also consider companion planting options, which involves pairing different varieties next to

each other to encourage pollination and can assist with natural pest control, as well as providing plenty of nooks and crannies to help with nesting. You can also leave out a little shallow dish supplied with water to keep them hydrated, but make sure there’s something for them to stand on while stopping for a drink. By now, we all know how beneficial good pollinators are to our environment, so let’s all try and do our bit to help and protect our wildlife so we can enjoy them for generations to come.
