Exciting times for EV buyers T he eagerly anticipated new Nissan LEAF is now in the Showrooms, priced from $59,990 plus on road costs. The new Nissan LEAF is the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision to transform the way people drive and live. LEAF is the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, offering a premium electric driving experience at an affordable price. “With strong interest in the new Nissan LEAF we see great potential for the vehicle and at this price we are giving it every chance to succeed,” said Nissan New Zealand managing director John Manley. “It’s certainly an exciting time for EV buyers. “With a contemporary design, increased range and long list of standard features, this incredibly fun to drive car presents New Zealand electric vehicle buyers with a stylish, affordable option.” “The new Nissan LEAF will be sold in 28 Nissan dealerships nationwide making Nissan the largest pure electric vehicle network in New Zealand,” said Manley. New Nissan LEAF comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto™ and e-Pedal, among other features. The impressive e-Pedal allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate, stop and hold the car by using the accelerator pedal alone without needing to use the brakes. It also features an Auto-Hold function. The new Nissan LEAF is available in a single high-spec grade. It now boasts a 40kWh battery, an improved 110kW of power, up 38 per cent
versus the outgoing model, and 320Nm of torque, which is an impressive increase of 14 per cent over the first generation, adding another degree of exhilaration for the driver thanks to the instant acceleration. The new model has a driving range of up to 270km¹ (WLTP combined cycle) making it perfect for city-based New Zealanders,
who on average travel less than 40 km/ day². While you can fully charge LEAF within 24 hours, the time drops to 7.5 hours if the household has the latest 7kw home charger³. You can also plug your LEAF into a CHAdeMO rapid charger and get from 20 per cent to 80 per cent charge in around 60
minutes depending on charging conditions. The new Nissan LEAF also has world-first bi-directional charging capabilities. This technology, which Nissan is working with its partners to realise in New Zealand, allows owners to use the charge from their car to power their home or business, or return electricity to the grid.
Heed that warning!
H
ave you ever been driving along when all of a sudden you see a warning light you’ve not noticed before light up? Before thinking the worst, pull over somewhere safe and take a moment to find out what the light is telling you. The first indication your vehicle may have a problem is with the illumination of a dashboard warning light or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). This means the vehicle’s engine management system is detecting a fault has happened or is happening, and attention is required. The seriousness of a fault depends on the colour of the light and the symbol it’s illuminating. Like traffic lights, red means stop, orange is caution, and green is go. A red warning light needs immediate attention, while orange or yellow means you need to head down to your local service centre and get the problem sorted by a professional. A green or blue light can mean a system/function is active or operating. While most drivers will have a fair idea of what their dashboard warning lights look like, some may not know what they all mean, and most importantly what to do if they light up. It pays to familiarise yourself in advance
with what these lights are before something happens. Engine oil pressure or level warning light This is a critical one. Engine oil is the life blood of your en-
longer circulate around the engine to provide lubrication. Stop as soon as you are safe, or turn the engine off right away and call for assistance or a tow. Engine check or malfunction lamp This means the vehicle engine man-
gine. Without it, your engine will quickly screech to a halt. If it lights up while driving or fails to switch off after you start the engine, it means your oil level is low, or the engine has lost oil pressure and the oil will no
agement system has detected a sensor fault and needs attention at your nearest convenience. This light illuminates when the ECU computer detects a fault with any one of the 50 odd sensors responsible for making
the engine run efficiently. While it may not point to a specific fault, a technician can run a diagnostic check to retrieve a fault code and then suggest the best method of repair. Engine temperature indication lamps These lights are replacing the traditional temperature gauge. The blue light tends to illuminate when the vehicle temperature is cold or warming up — switching off once the operating temperature is reached. If illuminated in red or blinking, this indicates that the cooling system is over the desired temperature threshold and you must stop, as continuing to drive could cause the engine to overheat. Though some warning symbols like those noted above are universal and common in the majority of makes and models, there are also manufacturer-specific warnings. In these instances, it pays to check your manual or handbook which should offer vehicle-specific information about its warning lights, or contact the manufacturer. Whether it’s a simple reminder to buckle up or an engine issue that’s best left to the professionals, dashboard warning symbols should never be ignored. Regular servicing is the best way to keep those warning lights on your dashboard from making frequent appearances.

The Spider returns E
• • •
xactly 50 years on from the debut of the last spider in the Ferrari range to sport a front-mounted V12, the 812 GTS hails a triumphant return for a model type that has played a pivotal role in the marque’s history since its foundation. The Ferrari V12 spider story features many iconic models and began in 1948 with the 166 MM, an authentic thoroughbred GT that won the two most prestigious endurance races in the world in 1949: the Mille Miglia and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The last in that long lineage was the 1969 365 GTS4, also known as the Daytona Spider because of Ferrari’s legendary victory in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, when two works 330 P4s and the NART-entered 412 P took the chequered flag side-by-side to occupy the top three places. The front-mounted V12 architecture has not been used in a Ferrari series-production spider since the 365 GTS4. Like its historic predecessors, the 812 GTS sets a new benchmark in terms of performance and exclusivity. Sporting Ferrari’s majestic 800 cv V12, it is not merely the most powerful production spider on the market, but also the most versatile, thanks to its retractable hard top, a unique feature in this segment which also guarantees a larger boot capacity. The 812 GTS is the spider version of the 812 Superfast, from which it takes both its specifications and performance, most notably the power unit which is the most powerful engine in its class, while the heady 8900 rpm rev limit means that sporty driving is undiminished.

RECORD-BREAKER J
ust last week, Bugatti was the talk of the automotive world thanks to the lengthy Chiron that smashed through the 300mph barrier at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien testing track. Upon breaking the record, Bugatti revealed that this modified Chiron was a “near-production” model, basically confirming that a Super Sport variant of the supercar was on its way. During a Grand Tour event over the weekend, Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann made the
announcement that the world was waiting for – and it came in the form of the limited-edition Chiron Super Sport 300+. Present at the event was the already-famous prototype that rocketed to 490km/h last week, but unfortunately, the final production version is going to be a little different to this one. Only 30 Super Sport 300+ models are going to be built, and as you can imagine, they aren’t going to be cheap. Despite the $6 million price tag that has been
slapped on the record-breaking car, one was bought on the spot, leaving just 19 more up for grabs. The final production iteration of the Super Sport will boast Bugatti’s iconic quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine that pumps out a whopping 1176kW. Winkelmann revealed that the prototype’s magnesium wheels and naked carbon fibre bodywork will also be carrying over to the production version, but the roll cage will be ditched, and a passenger seat installed.

Cops, robbers – and cars
T
here’s a lot to like about Endeavour – the fictional TV program set in the late 50s early 60s which follows cases investigated by the Thames Valley police. The storylines and sub-plots are gripping, the characters and the actors are great, as is the theme music. And so are the cars! Endeavour follows an officer later to become Inspector Morse as his Police career develops. It’s a prequel to the popular detective stories made famous by the late John Thaw, who played the part of Morse, then a senior officer. In Endeavour we get an understanding of the life and career experiences which made Morse what he was – a complex character who thought outside the square. But I digress and am beginning to sound like a film critic, a role I’m certainly not qualified to undertake. But there is good reason for mentioning Endeavour, because the stories are based around the English University city of Oxford that offers wonderful background scenery, which suits the great array of period cars we see in each episode. The Police are driving Mark 3 Zephyrs and Mark 4 Zodiacs, the villains various
cars and we sometimes see delightful Morris and Bedford delivery vans. Official cars – used or driven by those of higher rank and also some Intelligence Agency spooks have included a superb example of a Rover P5B Coupe. But what about the up-and-coming Morse? What does he drive? As a senior policeman he stood out because he chose to drive a distinctive Mark 2 Jaguar. In his younger days we see him driving a Mark 1 Jaguar. Morse’s choice of cars is interesting and no doubt reflects his personality. It’s rather noteworthy that even though Endeavour episodes have moved into a period after the Mark 2 Jaguar was introduced young Morse’s car has not changed. He has not traded up. There could be all sorts of reasons for that, probably to differentiate between the two series – Morse the younger and Morse the older. Or maybe Morse just simply liked his tried and trusted Mark 1 Jaguar. And why wouldn’t he? Or perhaps following a few disappointments in his personal relationships he finds that the Jaguar Mark

1 is a constant and reliable friend. The Jaguar Mark 1 is of course a British saloon car produced by Jaguar between 1955 and 1959. Originally it was referred to in contemporary company documentation as the Jaguar 2.4 Litre and Jaguar 3.4 Litre. Its designation Mark 1 followed its October 1959 replacement by Jaguar’s 2.4-litre Mark 2 followed by later variants. In some ways it looks like a smaller version of the model which followed – the telltale Jaguar lines are clearly evident. Its successor, the Jaguar Mark 2, is a medium-sized saloon car built from late 1959 to 1967 by Jaguar in Coventry, England. In their advertising Jaguar described the Mark 2 as a fast and capable saloon in line with Sir William Lyons’ 1950s advertising

When you need a roadside hand
O
n two recent occasions I’ve called on the Automobile Association (the AA) for assistance. Both times the Call Centre personnel have been brilliant quickly establishing my need and without fuss arranging for a service technician to come to my aid. Likewise both of the Roadservice Technicians (from our local AA agent) have been great, arriving amazingly quickly and getting me back on the road in no time. All of the assistance has been delivered in a professional and friendly manner.
The experiences have been a reminder of the value of belonging to the AA. Over the years the AA have wisely expanded the services, products and benefits which members can access, but they have never forgotten their core aim of assisting motorists. They have always and continue to do that well. On any given day countless members will receive help from the AA and no doubt like me are grateful. I’m grateful too that our parents encouraged my sister and I to join the AA when we got our first cars many years ago.
slogan: Grace . . . Space . . . Pace. Both Morse’s cars fit that description, which is amplified when we see occasional glimpses of the interior, which feature lots of wood and leather. There is no doubt about it, any motoring enthusiasts – especially those keen on British cars from the 50s and 60s – will enjoy seeing the real cornucopia of cars which appear in Endeavour. Cars which we certainly no longer see every day, but cars which many of us can relate to or which now provide us with happy memories. Getting back to Morse there is so much about him to wonder about, but one thing is for certain – he and his cars suit each other perfectly. Morse was always a wee bit elusive about his Christian name and when asked as senior office once famously replied “Inspector”. His Christian name was Endeavour, said to be the choice of his father, who admired Captain James Cook and consequently named his son after his hero’s famous ship. Endeavour is a compelling series which has so much going for it, action, intrigue, romance and difficult relationships, goodies and baddies. And lots of great cars!
