olkswagen launches the breakthrough for electric vehicles with the ID.3’s world premiereat the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The ID.3 extends the Volkswagen offering as the first model of a completely new generation of pure electric vehicles and the world’s first electric car with a CO2-neutral footprint –featuring zero localemissions, outstanding efficiency, and full connectivity. “The ID.3 is an all-rounder that is suitable for everyday use. The ID.3 flaunts the newly developed
design DNA that makes it immediately identifiable as a zero emission vehicle. Designed for an electrifying future, it brings a new level of design quality to the compact vehicle category. “With the ID.3, Volkswagen is heading towards the future,” says Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of the Volkswagen brand, going on to emphasise: “The natural style and absolutely intuitive driver experience demonstrate a new, electric way of thinking.” The interior is also revolutionary. The long wheelbase of the MEB layout, combined with very short overhangs, results in an expansive vehicle interior: TheOpen Space. With the room and spaciousness this creates, the five-seater ID.3 sets new standards in the compact class. The ID.3 will be available with three battery size options. The basic variant has a usable energy content of 45 kWh and enables an electrically powered range of up to 330 kilometres (as per WLTP). Alongside this is a battery variant with 58 kWh, which enables the ID.3 to achieve a range of up to 420 km (as per WLTP). The energy content of the largest battery is 77 kWh, and its electric range is up to 550 kilometres (as per WLTP). Thanks to its fast charging capability, it is possible to charge the ID.3 sufficiently for a range of around 290 kilometres (WLTP) within 30 minutes, using a charging output of 100 kW. The batteries themselves are integrated into the underbody. This positioning has a positive effect on driving dynamics, as it moves the centre of gravity in the ID.3 significantly lower.

One to make you smile
N
ow some vehicles can put a smile on your face as soon as you see them. For me this Kinetic Yellow Jimny was definitely one of
these! Suzuki is a very well respected manufacturer of all things small in the auto industry, and of course the Jimny for many years has been really the one and only authentic small/compact, off-roader. While Jimny have not been about for quite as long as the Teddington blacksmith, (established 1889) beneath this latest, fourth generation models retro body sits a traditional ladder frame chassis, live axles front and rear, together with long travel suspension. Together with its overall small size, low-range four-wheel-drive, electronic limited-slip differential traction control system, hill descent control, 210mm ground clearance, impressive approach and departure angles of 37 and 49 degrees respectively, this means it would have been quite at home on the very rough bullock and packhorse tracks of that era. These days it continues with its ability to out-distance many much more expensive hard-core SUVs in really challenging offroad situations. I say this because while I didn’t attend the Jimny’s off-road launch, I did drive it on some steep farm tracks and rocky paddocks and prior to doing this had spoken with, and seen the photos of some who
did. These included all sorts of challenges including mud, sand, traversing some dramatic slopes and quite breathtaking sidling angles. Jimny’s power comes from a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which delivers 75 kW at 6000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm. While its geared for those off-road duties it’s still very easy to drive about town. It’s quick enough away from the lights, then pulls smoothly at low speeds and is happy to negotiate right angle turns in third gear. The Jimny happily cruises on the open road in a sort of entertainingly relaxed manner with the rev-counter showing 3100rpm in fifth (top) gear at 100kmh. Although I’m accustomed to a six-speed manual, I soon became used driving with five. However a sixth gear for the Jimny would beneficial for people contemplating long distance driving. Nevertheless mechanical, as well as wind and road noise were quite acceptable and not annoying. Through corners, because of the long-travel, soft suspension you expect and get a fair bit of body movement. Meanwhile in wet conditions on the seal through tight corners you are mindful that the 195/80R15 tyres are indeed all-terrain types, so you are reassured by the driver-assist and safety systems onboard if so needed. having glasshouse views to the front and sides, as well as light, quick steering means parking is very easy, although there’s neither a rear-view camera or sensors. Whilst it may be inaccurate to suggest there’s car-like levels of comfort within the utilitarian, durable and easily cleaned cabin, there’s decent space, and comfort for those in the front. It’s easy to get settled behind the wheel as well, from where you again note both the placing and ease of using the various controls, including the 7.0-inch colour touchscreen for the infotainment system. This has dedicated sat-nav, bluetooth and smartphone capability. There’s a 6-speaker sound system and climate air-con. In the rear there’s two seats with rather flat squabs but adjustable backs. However they offer a surprising amount of space for two adults. Access to them is quite convenient and via the space created by folding, then sliding the front passenger seat forward. These rear seats split and fold flat, which
you need to do if carrying up to 377 litres of stuff. This if not secured, will slide around on the hard plastic backs of the folded seats. Rear seats up there’s just 85 litres of space behind them. The spare sits on the rear door, which swings open to the right.

This definitely trendy but tough, retro looking Jimny not only has loads of character, but in its on way is fun to drive both on the bitumen, and then is so very capable off-road. A pity therefore that many of those on the now long waiting list, when delivered will never be used to venture into more challenging territory!
