RP is raising the bar in the luxury touring riding segment with its all-new Can-Am Spyder RT model line-up. The 2020 CanAm Spyder RT is the ultimate road trip vehicle if you crave comfort and style on the open road. It has an entirely new contemporary look along with added convenience features for epic solo or two-up adventures. “The new Can-Am Spyder RT reflects what we’ve learned from owners over the past 10 years since we first unveiled the touring line-up,” Josée Perreault, senior vice-president, Can-Am On-Road at BRP, said. “Spyder RT riders have explored millions of miles of open road and we’ve reimagined the ideal road trip vehicle based on their feedback. This is the result and it truly is an ultimate riding experience.” Complementing the vehicle’s modern design are the innovative, premium features focused on making the ride better and more fun. This includes everything from new LED headlights for better road visibility, to a completely redesigned cockpit with a new display panel and easier controls. The line-up also raises the bar with comfort so you can relax and soak in the sights, including: • A new extended floorboard so you can change leg positions and sit however you prefer. • Ultra-comfortable rider and passenger heated seats that maximise seating

touring space, with increased lumbar support for better back support that minimises fatigue • A new adjustable electric windshield with memory function that provides enhanced protection from the elements • Lower seating and an optimised suspension for better handling, enhanced cornering and more stability on long straightaways. There is also a massive amount of storage – 177 litres – including a rear top case that can fit two XL helmets side-by-side, as well as LinQ compatibility, an innovative technology that allows riders to quickly add or remove the rear top case and install a cooler, sports bag, or other accessories. And for the first time ever in the Spyder RT line-up, you can choose to ride with no storage on the back if you prefer a sleeker and sportier look. The Can-Am Ryker The Can-Am Ryker is a great choice for short, fun rides. But not all riders prefer to hit the open road for thousands of kilometres in the lap of luxury, which is where the acclaimed Can-Am Ryker line-up comes in. The Ryker is perfect for people who prefer shorter, easier rides and incredible customisation options. The 2020 Can-Am Ryker continues to shatter the accessibility barrier for ease of riding and price, and changes for the new year model focuses on even more customisation. “The Can-Am Ryker has been a phenom-
enon since we unveiled it last year,” said Perreault. “It is cracking the code of how to grow the sport, which has been an industry-wide challenge for years. “We are committed to democratising the open road and the Can-Am Ryker is proving to be an ideal vehicle to get it done, for both men and women across a wide range of ages.” Whether you dream of exploring the open road on a Can-Am Spyder or fall in love with the accessible, fun and customisable Can-Am Ryker, BRP has you covered. alo vehicles appear in most car makers’ ranges. Perhaps none more so than Mercedes-Benz, for just about all of their models have an AMG (their high performance arm) version. Including the recently facelifted C 63S Estate. While its body and interior styling with their AMG touches convey subtle hints of its possible performance, it is of course what it can, and certainly does, that counts. For a start, under the bonnet is a 4-litre, bi-turbo V8 that comes up with 375kW and 700Nm of torque right from 1750 to 4500rpm! The result being just so much instantly exciting power on hand right from idle. It’s mated up to a really quick shifting nine-speed auto. Then there’s the selectable (either by the rotary controller or buttons on the steering wheel) drive system. The latter allows the driver to adjust and control, not only the responses from the engine and transmission, but to also tailor the steering and active suspension settings to best suit the driving conditions as well as their needs or wants. And in the right conditions, their skill level. In that respect there’s even a track control function for those who wish to do even more than sprint from 0-100km/h in just over four seconds. But be assured the performance, in whichever of the drive modes chosen, including comfort from just 2000rpm can still be nothing short of exhilarating. But then just as quickly transforms into a relaxed, luxury, long-legged SH1 cruiser. Then depending on your mood/driving conditions you
With its combination of wow factor, function, form and performance this Mercedes-AMG Estate certainly demonstrates, that for those who really enjoy driving you can indeed, at a price, have your cake and eat it as well! But then should one need more than ‘just’ 700Nm of torque and don’t want an Estate there’s also an AMG GT 63S 4-door Coupe with 470kW and 900Nm of torque. It’s priced at $326,000!
can also quickly select appropriate exhaust sounds – including snap, crackle, pops or explosions (shades of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture) that happen by way of a series of adjustable flaps in the exhaust. The combined fuel use figure is stated as being 10.7 L/100km. Which of course can depend very much on how one applies one’s right foot. However, when cruising on SH1 from home to central Christchurch, the trip computer showed a figure of 9.3L/100km. The cabin’s furnishings and fittings radiate a light and airy feeling (courtesy of the panoramic sun roof ) and while having a suitably sporty look about them, are definitely luxurious. There’s excellent two-tone nappa leather-clad, sports seats, lots of alloy features, LED high-lighting, digital instrument panels, a heads-

Then there’s excellent touring space for two (three, if needed) in the rear seats and 460L of luggage space with easy loading of this through the suitably high rising rear door. If there’s just two on board, but with more gear, the rear seats fold flat with the press of a button. All-in-all an ideal setting to experience the drive irrespective

of whether this is about town or experiencing the quite amazing agility and cornering ability on some decently winding roads. For the latter, it’s best to have a like-minded passenger aboard who will appreciate such exhilaration, including the 700Nm surge of torque. Of course, the responsive electric steering, the rather huge Brembo brakes and the grip from the Michelin Pilot SuperSport tyres (which particularly when
they are cold can be rather noisy on the very coarse chip) all play an important part. But it also is an easy drive around town and in either comfort or sport modes, road imperfections and more serious bumps are very well dealt with. Buyers expect strong safety credentials in a vehicle such as this. So there’s nine airbags, a 360 degree parking camera, sensors, lane keeping, blind spot warning and more.

Parents increasingly anxious – research New overseas research into the safety of children in vehicles may have implications for New Zealand parents according to an automotive industry expert. A new study from Volvo showed parents believe today’s roads are more dangerous for families. More than six in 10 parents say it is harder to keep children safe while driving than it was two years ago, while more than nine in 10 believe too many people drive recklessly and endanger families on the road. New Zealanders aged under 15 have a higher fatality rate on the road than youngsters in 17 of the 29 other countries represented in OECD Traffic Accident data. Latest Ministry of Transport figures show of the 377 fatalities on New Zealand roads last year, 4 per cent were aged under 15. Coby Duggan Volvo NZ general manager says according to the new report, Child Safety in the Back Seat, parents are actively seeking new ways to protect their loved ones and overcome the anxiety felt from the seemingly endless choices and conflicting information around child safety products. This issue may be compounded by the contribution of children themselves with more than a third (36 per cent) of parents reporting their kids have thrown tantrums, gotten sick (31 per cent) or parents have had a toy

of their family are causing a more defensive approach to driving. “The research shows parents are twice as likely to drive defensively with their family in the car than when driving alone (42 per cent vs 25 per cent) and nine in 10 (88 per cent) are more conscious of the example they are setting when their children are in the car,” he says. He says parents are also looking at new automotive technology to help keep them focused on the road while driving, with 89 per cent believing that safety is the number one reason to research a vehicle before buying. Possible solutions explored by parents include alerts when seatbelts are unbuckled (63 per cent), built-in mirrors so the child can see the driver (25 per cent) and ways to keep them busy, like entertainment screens (48 per cent) and mood technology that changes lighting and music when children are distressed (24 per cent). Duggan says Volvo has a longheld commitment to child safety inventing arguably the most important safety innovation in the history of vehicles in 1959, the three-point safety belt, still the most critical safety system in today’s cars. “We followed this up with the world’s first child restraint prototype in 1964 and by introducing the child safety booster cushion in 1978,” he says.
The reasons given for this action range from reaching for items elsewhere in the vehicle (42 per cent), reaching for something a child dropped (35 per cent), to consoling a child (28 per cent) or intervening when kids are arguing (24 per cent). Duggan says fears for the safety

Evans re-signs with Panasonic
N
ew Zealander, Mitch Evans, has committed his longterm future to Panasonic Jaguar Racing for season six and beyond in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Having secured the British team’s first Formula E win in Rome last year, Panasonic Jaguar Racing is looking to Mitch for more wins, points and podiums for the team in the future. Mitch, who has signed a multi-year contract, has been working closely with the team to get the Jaguar I-TYPE 4 ready to conquer the 12 city circuits on the ABB FIA Formula E season six calendar. Evans’ teammate will be announced at the team’s official launch, completing the Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver line-up for season six of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. James Barclay, Panasonic Jaguar Racing Team Director: “We are delighted that Mitch has committed his future to Panasonic Jaguar Racing and will remain an integral part of the team for the foreseeable future. We have grown together in the last three seasons and developed into a winning team capable of fighting at the front of this highly competitive championship. “Together we look forward to writing the next chapter of Jaguar Racing’s history.” Mitch Evans, #20: “I’m really happy to be staying with the team for a fourth season. “I have had a taste for victory driving for Panasonic Jaguar Racing now all I want is more! “The team is getting stronger and I feel at home here. “I’m determined to push forward with Panasonic Jaguar Racing, building on last season’s success as we hunt down more points, podiums and wins.”

VOLVO’S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR
T
he advance of electric cars constitutes the biggest change in the history of the automobile. For the first time in over a century, cars move without a petrol or diesel engine in the engine bay and have a battery in the floor, changing the car at its core. With the introduction of the forthcoming fully electric Volvo XC40 SUV next month, Volvo is not just launching its first fully electric carit is also introducing one of the safest cars on the road, despite a fresh set of challenges presented by the absence of an internal combustion engine. While building on the excellent safety standards of the original XC40, Volvo’s safety engineers had to completely redesign and reinforce the frontal structure to deal with the absence of an engine, meet Volvo’s high safety requirements and help keep occupants as safe as in any other Volvo. To help keep passengers safe and the battery intact in the event of a collision, Volvo also developed a new and unique safety structure for passengers and battery alike in the
XC40. The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium and has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around the battery. The battery’s placement in the floor of the car also has the benefit of lowering the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs. Coby Duggan, Volvo NZ general manager, says the inclusion of new technology in the fully electric XC40 will ensure it is one of their safest vehicles to date. “Next-generation safety systems will be introduced for the first time in this new model as well as an innovative
structure to protect the vehicle’s battery and those travelling in the vehicle in the event of a collision,” he says. Meanwhile, the car’s body structure has not just been reinforced in the front, but also at the rear. Here, the electric powertrain has been integrated into the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin and reduce the strain on people inside the car. In terms of active safety systems, the bat-
tery-powered XC40 also introduces new technology. It is the first Volvo model equipped with a new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensor platform with software developed by Zenuity, the joint venture company owned by Volvo and Veoneer. The new ADAS platform is a modern, scalable active safety system that consists of an array of radars, cameras and ultrasonic
sensors. Because of its scalable nature, it can easily be developed further and lays the foundation for the future introduction of autonomous drive technology. Volvo will reveal more details about the fully electric XC40 in the coming weeks, before it will be first shown to the public on October 16. Duggan the says New Zealand launch timing and pricing for the new model are yet to be confirmed.
