It combines a tough, working pedigree, with premium ride comfort, smart technologies, and sleek, modern styling. All of which means you can step from a day on the job to a night on the town without missing a beat. The sign of a truly modern pickup? One that shows how power, acceleration and fuel efficiency cannot just co-exist, but thrive. The Nissan Navara offers three engines that do just that, thanks to advanced technology that helps squeeze the most performance out of every drop of fuel. The ST and ST-X variants are powered by an advanced 140kW twin-turbo diesel engine. With a small turbo to get you moving

In the front, the fatigue-reducing all day comfort seats create a neutral posture that improves blood flow to make long rides considerably more pleasant. In the back, passengers will enjoy plenty of legroom plus their own air conditioning. And if you’d rather opt for a little fresh air, there’s the press button sunroof and a

rear power sliding window. Whether you’re looking to pull a heavy load at work, or for a weekend away, the Nissan Navara makes it easy. All of our diesel engine models can muster up the grunt to pull a massive 3500kg braked towing capacity. Tackling hilly terrain? Now you can do it with more confidence and control. On an incline, Hill Start Assist can help keep you from rolling backwards when you’re accelerating up a hill from a stop. And Hill Descent Control helps you maintain steady speed and braking, so you get down a steep grade more safely. The Nissan Navara also has a host of safety features standard across the range. Seven airbags including driver knee airbag, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) Navara ST-X 450 Double Cab Introducing the special edition Navara ST-X 450 Double Cab. Indians ‘near-perfect’ Bernard Egan MOTORING

T

wo weeks ago our motoring pages were part of the very special 140th Anniversary issue of this newspaper. There are so many facets to a newspaper, including news, readers and of course advertisers; each needs the other. Newspapers and advertisers go together like a hand in a glove. Over the years advertisements have evolved because goods, services and products have changed, as has the terminology used to promote them. With the history of this paper in mind it was fascinating to read an historical snippet in the just-arrived latest edition of Beaded Wheels. In his always interesting Timelines column Graeme Rice referred to the Indian Motorcycle Company’s statement made one hundred years ago. in November 1919. The Indian Company bosses claimed that after 21 years their products were built nearer to perfection than any other motorcycle. They advertised Indians as the product of the largest motorcycle factory in the world. And they proudly went on to announce where other makes have three or four strong features, the Indian had one hundred of them and there wasn’t one weakness in their construction. Slightly different terminology than we might see today. Indian motorcycles have not been around for as long as this newspaper, but the timing of the advertisement coincides with Robert Bell becoming the owner of the Guardian. About that time American George M. Hendee founded a bicycle production company called the Hendee Manufacturing Company. The bicycles carried brand names such as Silver King, Silver Queen, and American Indian, which was shortened to simply Indian and became Hendee’s primary brand name. The company was renamed for the

ernon George – Vern – Ellis who passed away recently will be missed by many people including the Ashburton Guardian Motoring Team. Vern who had a lifelong interest in machinery and cars enjoyed vintage motoring and restored several vehicles often doing much of the work himself. He joined the Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club in 1990. Vern was a committee member for two years and between 2002 and 2008 served 4 terms as Chairman of the Branch and was always willing to provide advice and assistance to other members. His collection of veteran, vintage and post vintage vehicles ranged from a 1911 Renault through to a 1983 Cortina with American classics in between. Vern and Phyl enjoyed taking parts in club runs and rallies. Some years ago Vern made us an offer we

colloquial name of Native Americans, which Christopher Columbus mistakenly called Indians. Although it’s had a few bumps and a few rough rides along the way, the company is still producing motorbikes and keenly points out that just as the Indians were North America’s first residents, the Indian Motorcycle Company predates Harley-Davidson in manufacturing of motorcycles in America. In the same Beaded Wheels column Graeme Rice records that Oldsmobile also got the key of the door in 1919 and like Indian turned 21 years old. And they were no less boastful, claiming their Model 37 was a gasoline saver and more economical to own, maintain and operate than any other vehicle. They are features which advertisers continue to recognise as being important to consumers. Oldsmobile was a brand of American automobiles produced for most of its existence by General Motors. It derived its name from its founder Ransom E. Olds. The name was not as suggested by some wits an abbreviation of Old Ladies Driving Slow Makes Others Behind Infuriatingly Late Everyday. Indian and Oldsmobile would have relied heavily on newspaper advertising so no doubt their products would at some time or other been promoted in our paper.

couldn’t refuse. Mind you it was an offer we wouldn’t want to refuse. Vern asked if a member of the Guardian Motoring Team would like to take his fully restored, pristine De Soto on the Vintage Car Club Annual Rally and in return publish the experience as a way of letting people know about the fun of vintage motoring and the activities of the club. This writer, along with Marlene, Kate Robins and her late husband Mark accepted the offer and we had a delightful day’s motoring in a very special car. The idea was typical of both Vern’s innovative thinking and the generosity for which he was renowned. We always appreciated Vern’s ongoing interest in and support of our motoring pages, we will miss him. The Ashburton Guardian Motoring Team offer our sympathy to Phyl, Brian and Megan, Sue and Brent and their families.

A

s perhaps the most anticipated model to join the Yamaha stable in a generation, there is a lot riding on the release of the Yamaha Tenere 700. Developed around the 689cc parallel-twin engine found in the MT-07HO – which produces 54kW at 9000rpm and 69Nm produced at 6500rpm – the Tenere is the first adventure bike from a Japanese manufacturer to debut in the middleweight adventure category. It will be priced from $16,999 and is due in December. It will enter the market against stiff competition from Europe; Triumph’s Tiger 800 and KTM’s 790 Adventure are squarely in Yamaha’s sights. “I think what we’ve done is present a bike to market to allow consumers a solid choice against the European contenders,” says Yamaha Motor New Zealand’s general manager, Alan Petrie. As part of a Trans-Tasman Tenere Tour, Yamaha Motor NZ secured three pre-production Tenere 700s to tour the country, stopping off in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. “We’ve basically sold out our first shipment of the Tenere 700 already. I believe there is only a handful of bikes left in that shipment so the bike has been received very well,” says Petrie. The Teneres were in the main colours of blue/silver, black and white/red and were kitted out with different accessories from the Yamaha catalogue to help riders get a feel for the full potential of the machine. Petrie says: “We believe this bike will bring a lot of new customers to the sport of adventure riding as the value is extremely good, they’re well specced and they’ve been designed to deliver.” In Australia, the annual Tenere Tragics adventure ride is a regularly sold-out affair and the event could soon be in New Zealand. “We absolutely want Tenere Tragics to happen here,” says Petrie.

Ford has revealed that it will have more power than the 345kW Mustang Bullitt

ord has kept the Mustang line-up nicely updated over the years through the introduction of various RTR and Roush-tuned models alongside the special ‘Bullit’ models that made it down under. For their latest project, one that is exclusive to Australia, Ford has teamed up with Herrod Performance to create a Mustang that can rival some of the most serious muscle coming out of America. This joint project has been dubbed the Ford Mustang R-Spec, and only 500 units are going to be built, exclusively for the Australian market. Joining the already capable Mustang line-up, including the EcoBoost and the V8-powered GT, is the R-Spec with its bonkers supercharged V8. Official power figures haven’t been released just yet, but Ford has revealed that it will have more power than the 345kW Mustang Bullitt. It has been rumoured that the R-Spec will pack a whopping 520kW, or a nice and round 700hp, and up to 827Nm of torque. This will make the R-Spec the most powerful Mustang that Ford has sold in Australia. All this power will be sent exclusively through a six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels which are wrapped in a set of sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. This R-Spec will sit around

20mm lower than the standard GT thanks to a set of shorter springs paired with the standard MagneRide suspension system. Thicker stabiliser bars sit at the front and rear of the car to improve cornering. Herrod Performance has added their unique exhaust system to the vehicle, which features Quiet, Normal, Sport, and Track modes. On the inside, this special edition Mustang contains all the standard interior components including the iconic tri-spoke steering wheel. AEB, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and self-levelling headlights all come standard. “We have been working hard with Herrod Performance to deliver a supercharged Mustang to Australian customers”, said Ford Australia and New Zealand CEO and President, Kay Hart. “Now, working with Herrod Performance, we’ve been able to bring this special edition Mustang to Australian customers through our extensive dealership network, and with the peace-of-mind of fiveyear, unlimited kilometre warranties backed by Ford and Herrod.” It sounds like Ford is set on keeping the Mustang R-Spec exclusive to Australia, but Ford New Zealand have been contacted for comment, and we’ll update this article when we hear back.

old and red may have previously reserved for the Chinese flag, but it looks like Aston Martin has taken ownership of the colour scheme with its latest release. This release comes in the form of the highly-anticipated 2020 DBS GT Zagato that is exclusively available in the DBZ Centenary Collection, which includes the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation. Both of the vehicles were unveiled at the Newport Concours in Rhode Island last weekend, where Aston Martin revealed that they are only planning on

Friday, October 11, 2019

building 19 sets of the cars, and if you want to buy one, you have to buy both. If you do plan on forking out the $11 million for this collection, you will be rewarded with a stonking new English coupe alongside a re-imagined classic. Under the hood of the DBS GT Zagato sits a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 that cranks out a whopping 567kW of power. Interestingly, this Zagato is only available in Supernova red, which is complemented by the black accents on the exterior, and gold accents inside. Highlights on the

exterior of this Zagato include the double-bubble roof (which you can’t see out of), the intriguing taillights, the massive black and gold 21-inch wheels, and the 18-carat solid gold Aston Martin badges. On the inside, the interlocking gold 3D-printed pieces took upwards of 100 hours to produce, and contrast the rest of the cabin spectacularly.

23

Accounting for the other half of the DBZ Centenary Collection is the DB4 GT Zagato Continuation, which is a track-going recreation of the legendary car that comes with a few updates. Unfortunately, if you were dusting off the old check book, and getting ready to fork out the necessary $11 million for the pair, we’ve got some bad news. All 19 sets have been accounted for.
