Stronger, safer, more durable
I
SUZU continues to build a reputation for diesel engines since developing Japan’s first air-cooled automotive diesel engine in 1936. Constant technological improvements, innovations and in-depth experience across the production of more than 26 million diesel engines means ISUZU is an established global leader in developing capable and efficient engines for all kinds of applications. The unwavering commitment to performance is on show in the ever popular 430Nm 4JJ1-TC Hi-power 3.0 litre engine with a Variable Geometry System (VGS) turbo charger. This engine delivers practical torque for improved highway acceleration, genuine off road performance and uncompromised towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. As a leading global producer of commercial vehicles, ISUZU understands the importance of using high quality, well designed and durable components to make everything in the ISUZU D-MAX last longer. ISUZU D-MAX TOUGH, uncompromising utes are built using technologies and features taken directly from it’s truck heritage. The D-MAX chassis gains truck strength and durability that delivers more confident road holding and balance under a diverse range of conditions, with or without load. Thorough testing of vehicles in harsh,
real world conditions means that it is engineered to last. A century of experience in truck manufacturing is evident in every single ISUZU D-MAX – this is ISUZU’s truck DNA. ISUZU’s ‘universal design’ concept drives development and inclusion of features that are intuitive to use, easy to reach and greatly improves occupant and driver convenience. The distinctive wider door arches on the ISUZU D-MAX make for easy access to the cabin offering generous head and leg room as well as comfortably designed
seats for every occupant. An abundance of thoughtfully placed storage and cup holders complete the interior giving it a striking sense of design and function. In addition, state of the art features like the built-in GPS enabled audio system or the 8-speaker surround sound (double cab models)* and Bluetooth® connectivity all feature controls that are effortless to reach and simple to use. The D-MAX offers all of the luxury appointments expected in modern vehicles. Premium leather seats with power
height adjustment (LS-T models only) rear seats with 60/40 split fold up/down configuration, instrument panel with multi-information display (LS-M, LS & LS-T models only), 8” touch screen audio system with USB, AUX, Bluetooth connectivity and an inbuilt SAT NAV function (LS & LS-T models only) Double Cab 4WD LS-T interior, push start and passive entry system (LS-T models only) * LS & LS-T Models only. At ISUZU, safety is always the first thought. Careful attention to detail allows ISUZU to deliver higher levels of active safety features. The Hill Start Assist (HSA) function engages automatically on significant gradients to prevent the ISUZU D-MAX rolling when moving from a stationary position while the Hill Descent Control (HDC) allows a smooth hill descent at a controlled speed. Intelligent cabin design allows excellent road visibility while Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and projector lens headlamps actively work to keep drivers alert to potential hazards and in control. When combined with its tough, high tensile steel cabin, energy absorbing front end, side impact anti-intrusion bars and six airbags with pre-tensioning seatbelts you can be assured that the D-MAX is made stronger and safer for you and your passengers.

n 1983 Volkswagen launched the second Golf generation on the market. It was in this vehicle that the “Golf generation”, as German best-selling author Florian Illies coined the vehicle’s contemporaries, learnt to drive. The fact of the matter is that this Golf also became a worldwide success: by the time it was phased out in 1991, Volkswagen had produced 6.3 million Golf Mk II. Generation Golf now definitely had more space in the Golf. Even though the new Golf generation had become considerably larger, Volkswagen was able to significantly improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics: the Cd value dropped from 0.42 to 0.34. The Golf Mk II set new technical benchmarks in the compact vehicle class.
This vehicle generation saw the introduction of the catalytic converter (1984), anti-lock braking system (ABS, 1986) and power steering. The Golf was also available with allwheel drive for the very first time (syncro, 1986). Additionally, the engine in the GTI was the first Golf engine with four-valve technology (1986). 1988 saw the sporty highlight of the series be released as the Rallye Golf G60, featuring a G-Lader supercharger. In that same year Golf production hit the 10 million mark. In 1990 the all-wheel drive Golf Country also gave us the first taste of modern sport utility vehicles (SUV). From 1991 the Golf Mk II was not only assembled in Wolfsburg, but also at the new Mosel plant near Zwickau (Saxony).

Driver appeal tops the list P
ictured are a pair from the latest, fifth generation Hiace range – the standard size 5265 mm long ZR and the even longer, 5915mm and higher roofed ZX. The big surprise about both versions was just how enjoyable they were to drive in the some 350km I drove in each of them. Of course the Hiace name is so ubiquitous it’s almost the household word for a van. As well, they are either directly or indirectly part of most Kiwis’ daily lives through transporting people, mail ,or stuff, across towns, cities and rural roads. Indeed just about everywhere! You will note their fronts have a very different look and shape, including sprouting a bonnet. For rather than having the van’s traditional engine between the seats as has been the case since the original 1967 models, all these new ones have their 2.8-litre turbo-diesels mounted ahead of the front axle. There are many benefits to this, particularly so regarding safety with all the new models achieving five-star ANCAP ratings, and that is a landmark achievement for the commercial van segment. There’s also much easier access to the cab via the wide opening doors and wide step to the now lower seating position. Where for the driver there’s also much more adjustability and comfort with a lever for the seat height, while the steering has both tilt and reach adjustment. The overall feeling in the Hiace cabin is one of being more like sitting in (and driving as well) a large, quiet SUV, rather
than being perched high up in a van. Even more so with the easy to use and see dash and controls including the coloured 7-inch touchscreen audio unit complete with sat-nav and plenty of other functions. There’s also a 4.2” colour multi information display with a digital speed readout, as well as cruise control. There’s lots of handy-reach, useful storage for both driver and passenger in the wide, long centre console. While you may be sitting lower than previously, there’s also a much better view, both side to side and forward because of the large expanse of glass and the lower belt line. The reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors are particularly helpful. There’s a variety of configurations available for this new ZR. They include the two-seater with full glass windows as driven, a five-seater (2+3) with extra airbags, half glass and solid panels, together with a 10-seat version with full glass, additional speakers and both, rear cooling and heating. The two and five-seaters have dual sliding doors while the 10-seat ZR has a left-hand side sliding door. Meanwhile the cavernous ZX comes with two seats, full glass, and lots of overhead storage in the ceiling above the sun visors. The ZX has one, left-hand side, sliding door. While all have the same 2.8-litre turbo-diesel together with the 6-speed auto as used in the Hilux, there’s also a 6-speed manual option, as was driven, for the two-seater ZR.
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
Maximum power of 130kW is developed at 3400rpm. For those with the 6-speed auto there’s a most usable wave of 450Nm of torque on hand between 1600 and 2400rpm. The 6-speed manuals torque is 420Nm from 1400 to 2600rpm. That’s a significant increase – 30kW and 150Nm (120Nm for manual) more than the previous model produces, which are certainly reflected in eager manner in which these new ones drive. I mention “produces” in the previous paragraph because the previous model indeed continues alongside this new one, but just in two carry-over variants, the ZL two-seat cargo van (in both auto and manual) and also the ZX twelve-seat minibus. The new platform also has a longer wheelbase to match the increased exterior length. The cargo area is larger so that wider stuff such as pallets or sheets of gib board now fit/lie flat between the wheel arches. There’s also an adequate number of well-placed tie-down points. Then the space in the ZX is huge. Mention has previously been made of the five-star ANCAP safety rating. Toyota’s Safety Sense package, which all the new models come with, makes a major
Toyota Hiace
contribution here. It consists of a pre-collision system that has autonomous emergency braking and vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian detection. Also there’s lane departure alert with brake control, vehicle sway warning, trailer sway control, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alerts and more.
TOYOTA HIACE ZR, ZX ■■ Drive away pricing: (includes all on road costs; WOF, registration, a full tank of fuel, 1000 kms of RUCs, Toyota’s service package, floor mats, and the three years or 100,000 kms warranty). -ZR 5 Door, 2 Seat Manual $44,990 (auto $46,990). ZR 5 seat, auto, half panel van $47,990 - ZR 4 Door, 10 Seat auto Minibus $52,990 and ZX 4 Door Van – 2 Seat auto $50,990. ■■ Engine: 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel – 130kW@3400rpm.Torque for the auto is 450Nm from 1600 -2400rpm and the manual 420Nm from 1400-2600rpm. ■■ Transmission: 6-speed auto or manual – rear-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: - auto 8.2L/100km manual 7.5L/100km. ■■ Turning circle: 11.8 metres. ■■ Tows: ZR Manual1900kg - all autos 1500kg. ■■ Safety: Toyota’s Safety Sense package- 5 star ANCAP rating
FINALE With this latest Hiace range Toyota has been careful to both keep and improve the core functionality, like great load-carrying ability, versatility and a variety of interior layout configurations. But then also has very clearly been mindful of the importance of adding greater comfort, performance, driver appeal as well, top class safety!

ew for 2020, Triumph’s top specification Street Triple RS gets a major step up in performance from a significant engine update developed by Triumph’s Moto2TM engine team. It features all new more aggressive styling, and has been designed to set the new category benchmark for capability and handling, making this the ultimate performance street bike. And for LAMS license riders, the new Street Triple S is updated with the same new aggressive attitude, poise and styling of the RS model. Adding to its already high level of specification and equipment, the characterful 660cc triple engine, and intuitive, agile and easy handling, makes this the new street champion. Light, fast, fun, agile and stylish – the Street Triple has been a game-changing bike in the motorcycle world since its launch in 2007 with its distinctive character and thrilling triple engine. It redefined the middleweight sports category, establishing itself as the first choice for its combination of aggressive looks, light intuitive handling, thrilling power delivery, and its unique triple soundtrack. Evolving from its renowned 675cc triple to an even more exhilarating 765cc in 2017, the Street Triple RS redefined the category, becoming the lightest bike in class, with all new state-of-theart technology, high specification chassis and Triumph’s signature exceptional standard of finish and detailing. And now, for 2020, the new Street Triple RS has been designed to set the benchmark all over again with a major step up in performance, much more aggressive attitude and even better ride-enhancing technology. Combined with its trademark agile, dynamic handling, and high specification suspension, brakes and tyres, the new Street Triple RS is perfect for the street and the track. For riders looking for an even more accessible way into the Street Triple line up, the new Street Triple S introduces a new LAMS compliant option that also benefits from more aggressive and striking new styling, a high specification of equipment, exceptional low and mid-range performance, and exhilarating handling. For a major step up in performance, the new Street Triple RS benefits from a significant Euro 5 update to its characterful 765cc triple engine, developed by Triumph’s expert Moto2TM engine team. The result is a significant increase in torque, now 9 per cent higher in the midrange, peaking at an even higher 79Nm at 9350rpm. The new exhaust balance pipe smooths the torque curve for exciting, usable torque from low down and across the entire rev range. Power is also up by 9 per cent in the mid-range, peak-
ing at 123PS at 11,750rpm, making the new Street Triple RS a totally addictive ride. Engine updates include a new exhaust cam optimised for more mid-range performance, and new higher precision machining on the crank shaft, clutch and balancer, which lowers inertia and reduces engine mass. The throttle is also now even more responsive on the RS model, as a result of a 7 per cent reduction in rotational inertia, which, combined with the increase in torque across the rev range, delivers a notable improvement in immediacy. There is also a new silencer on the Street Triple RS, which is now freer flowing due to the twin catalyst system, reducing restriction and lowering emissions. It’s finished off beautifully with a premium sporty carbon fibre end cap, which delivers a significantly improved, more distinctive triple sound. This comes from the exhaust system refinements and the all new intake duct, which together improves the crispness and purity of the tone, with a smoother balance between intake and silencer sound.
www.guardianonline.co.nz
The smooth, refined gearbox on the new Street Triple RS has short first and second gear ratios, delivering exceptional acceleration performance and slick gear changes. Higher precision machining also enables the removal of the anti-backlash gears, reducing mass and adding further refinement. Plus, the Street Triple RS retains its high specification slip and assist clutch, for a really light feel, reducing clutch lever effort and improving rider comfort and control. Now with a significant update to their iconic styling, the new Street Triple RS and S have a much more aggressive new look. The LED headlights are all new, with a striking new shape and a sharper and more purposeful style. They are also now whiter and brighter, making them much more conspicuous. The Street Triple RS also features Daytime Running Lights (DRLs – market applicable) which have an all new, even more distinctive design, while the Street Triple S has position lights, which also increase visibility. The new Street Triple RS and S both have all new bodywork, which is more angular, more sporty, and with much cleaner lines. The new fly screen and air intake are now more pronounced, echoing the shape of the new headlights, plus the side panels and rear unit are all new and distinctly different. The Street Triple RS also features a colour coded new seat cowl and belly pan, and a restyled silencer which is more sporty and compact, with a beautiful carbon fibre finisher and Triumph badge branding. Plus, there’s enhanced finish and detailing with new contemporary mirrors on both models, and in addition for the RS model, a new branded handlebar clamp, and more harmonised component finishes, including blacked out control plates and rear footrest hangers, plus satin metal heel guards and silencer finish. And, being the top of the range, the Street Triple RS also has the highest level of finish, now with a new Titanium Silver main frame, matching the finish used on the Speed Triple models. As the lightest bike in its class, the new Street Triple RS has an incredible powerto-weight ratio that is key to its new category leading performance, making this a very agile, exhilarating and accessible bike for all riders. Both the Street Triple RS and S also have the lightest wheels in the class, contributing to their agile feel and precise, engaged handling. The iconic gullwing swingarm on both models delivers torsional stiffness and lateral flexibility. This maximises stability at higher speed, while its optimised pivot position provides more natural resistance to compressing the RSU under hard acceleration. Together these enable tight corner exits and the Street Triple’s precise chassis behaviour.
