Time to maximise family fun

I

magine a place where your cooler is always full. Where time feels like it goes by just a little slower, and your favourite songs last just a little longer. It’s your Sea-Doo Life, and with SeaDoo’s original accessories and riding gear you can easily turn the big beautiful blue into something that’s especially for you. Maximise your family fun with style and stability. Whether it’s a quick lap or a long day on the blue, the Sea-Doo is the perfect companion to any adventure. Make a splash or two and live your SeaDoo life with a new Sea-Doo. With smarter storage space all your gear is now within arm’s reach. The industry’s first direct-access front storage opens by simply raising the handlebar assembly. No standing required. And extra rear storage is also possible with the secure Quick-Attach LinQ™ System. Ride to the beat of your drum with the BRP Audio Premium System. With the swipe of a finger, create the vibe you want with the industry’s first manufacturer-installed, truly waterproof, Bluetooth audio system. The latest Sea-Doo platform delivers the best life on the water with zero compromise. From performance, to lounge space, to convenience, Sea-Doo give you more. Now available on GTI, GTR and WAKE models. Another Sea-Doo exclusive, the closed loop cooling system (CLCS) uses the coolant to keep the engine running at ideal temperatures. Unlike competitors, this technology prevents corrosive saltwater and damaging debris from entering the engine, for much-increased reliability,

longevity and peace of mind. Offered as an expensive upgrade on traditional inboard engines, CLCS comes standard on all Sea-Doo models. And tere’s the FISH PRO. Your most impressive piece of tackle yet. The FISH PRO injects even more excitement into sport fishing than you ever thought possible. Cleverly designed with intuitive features that allow you to explore locations previously unavailable to traditional fishing crafts, get close to the action and experience fishing like never before. Garmin ECHOMAP Plus 62cv Fish Finder with a 6-inch (15cm) screen and in hull

transducer. A top of the line navigation, charting and fish finding system Stable at its core with the extended rear platform which adds 11.5 inches (29cm) to the back of the watercraft and allows more space for boarding and fishing while also increasing stability at rest or when carrying a full load of fish. The linQ fish cooler is a rugged 51L cooler specially designed for fishing with a recessed work surface, four innovative rod holders, trolling slots, and tackle and bait storage The fishing bench seat is designed for ease of movement from the driver position to passenger for fishing.

Optimised for fishing facing sideways with increased lateral stability when combined with the angled footrests. As well as the other many benefits that the FISH PRO offers from linQ attachment system, trolling modes, watertight phone compartment and the direct access front storage the FISH PRo is a winner. Pricing for the Sea-Doo starts from $8955.00. We also offer competitive finance rates, warranty on all our new Sea-Doo skis and an incredible range of Sea-Doo riding gear and accessories. You can find Sea-Doo at Timaru Can-Am & Sea-Doo 127 Hilton Highway, Timaru.

The ‘R’ alternative

T

here’s an impressive number of the latest model Honda Civic Type Rs lurking in the garages of some lucky owners about Ashburton. These $59,990 Type Rs, with their aerodynamic skirts, large rear wings and triple exhausts are fast and entertaining – not just in a straight line, but around corners too! For a start their 2-litre turbo-petrol engines develop 228kW and 400Nm of torque from 2500 to 4500rpm. They have a fast-to-shift six-speed manual and front wheel drive complete with a special differential to minimise both wheel-spin and torque-steer. Add in the very sporty suspension complete with adaptive shock-absorbers, large Brembo brakes and those 20-inch alloys shod with wide 245/30ZR tyres. The rewards just keep on coming! And that’s even in Comfort setting of the three mode drive system, of which R (for race) is best reserved for the likes of the Ruapuna race track to experience 0-100kmh times of under six seconds, and lots more thrills. You experience those thrills from within the very usable, sportily-furnished but comfy cabin with its red highlights and trim. It’s a practical four seater (seat-belted accordingly), plus the boot holds a decent 420 litres for touring.

But hold on – what has this to do with the RS Sensing Sedan? Well both it and the RS Hatch ($41,990) now have same intuitive and effective ‘Sensing’ safety and advanced driver-assist technologies as does the Type R. They both have smart, high tech, 1.5-litre, four cylinder VTEC, single scroll turbo-petrol engines producing 127kw at 5500 rpm and maximum torque of 220 Nm between 1700-5500 rpm. While that’s respectively just a little more than half of what the Type R produces, the Sedan performs very keenly, especially so in S mode and when using Honda’s variation of paddles. And while it has a CVT auto, most times you are not aware of this because it reacts really well to both the driver’s wants and the engine’s torque delivery. The stated overall fuel economy figure is 6.3L/100kms and that indicated over 350km was 7.0L/100kms. While those eagle-eyed Honda-philes would never mistake this Phoenix Orange RS for a Type R, the close family relationship is definitely noticeable. Especially with boot spoiler (much more restrained and certainly less noticeable than the Type R’s though) the gloss black exterior garnishing as well as the similarly shaded, new 18-inch alloys with their wide 235/40 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. The greater grip of the latter, together with revisions to the suspension, plus the

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

already positive and quick steering adds up to an excellent sum of responsive, predictable and enjoyable handling. Those who enjoy such will appreciate it from the leather-clad interior, wherein there’s a subtle reference to the Type R with the red seat trim stitching. The front seats are heated. While Civics are in the small car sector, small they are not. Inside there’s plenty of space, both front and back, as well as the boot, which will take 519 litres. Although the sedan’s instrument panel and controls have also been updated it doesn’t get sat-nav, which the RS Hatch version does, as well as a sun roof. From a safety perspective some of the very comprehensive Sensing systems, such as the forward collision warning (a red light first flashes on the dash and if you don’t react the car’s braking system will) and road departure mitigation are active from start up. Others including lane departure warn-

ing/lane keep assist and the excellent adaptive cruise control are selectable. Around town the front/rear parking sensors and reversing camera proved very helpful, as did the unique lane-watch camera in the left side mirror.

HONDA CIVIC RS SEDAN ■■ Pricing: $39,990 (other Civics from $32,990 to $59,990 for Type R) - plus ORCs. ■■ Engine: 1.5-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol, 127kW and 220Nm of torque. ■■ Transmission: CVT–front-wheel-drive. ■■ Quoted Economy: 6.3L/100km. ■■ Tows: 800kg (braked) ■■ Safety: comprehensive advanced driver assist/safety technology package. 5 star ANCAP rating. ■■ Turning circle: 10.9 metres. ■■ Warranty: 5 years/unlimited ks.

FINALE So for those who lust after a Type R but the cost of which is too great, this Civic RS is a very worthy alternative. It’s an inviting package with its smart technology, advanced safety, performance, space and comfort.

MX-30 human-centric

M

azda Motor Corporation has unveiled its first mass-production electric vehicle, named Mazda MX-30, at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. A new addition to Mazda’s car lineup, the MX-30 is the automaker’s third new-generation model. Aiming to offer an experience that lets customers relax and be themselves and deepens the bond between car and owner, the model offers a creative time and space that invites new ways of using a vehicle. Mazda New Zealand Managing Director, David Hodge believes the company has succeed in creating an EV that still delivers the exciting driving experience people expect from Mazda. “There has been increasing interest from the New Zealand motoring public in EVs and we believe the stylish look and performance of the MX-30 will see it at the top of peoples consideration list. “Under the Car-as-Art ethos, the styling of MX-30 aims to raise its artistic value and expand the expressive range of Mazda’s Kodo-Soul of Motion design language. “Based on a concept of “Human Modern,” the design stays grounded in the beautifully honed, handcrafted forms of Kodo, yet aligns itself with changing values and new lifestyles. Spaces around the centre console give the cabin an open feel, and environmentally conscious materials such as cork and fabrics made from recycled materials are used in ways that bring out their natural appeal, creating a comfortable interior space. In addition, the MX-30 adopts freestyle doors so customers can invent new and creative ways of using the car. In line with the human-centric philosophy, Mazda engineers were determined to deliver the same Jinba-ittai driving joy that every Mazda offers in the EV as well.

Endurance showdown T

he best endurance racing drivers and cars from both the North Island and the South Island will come together to battle it out in one of the biggest long distance motorsport races the country has ever seen when the New Zealand Endurance Championship final is played out on November 16 at the fantastic Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, international circuit, in the North Waikato. The race weekend will also offer domestic New Zealand drivers and teams a very rare opportunity to compete on the full 3.8km international circuit, the most significant part of the circuit’s redevelopment when current owner and racer Tony Quinn purchased the circuit in 2015. The additional straight and the challenging new corners before the international layout re-joins the old national layout will test competitors and bring out the best in the cars’ performance according to organiser Kel McBeath. “Using the international layout certainly adds another dimension to the whole weekend for the New Zealand racers who will compete in the national final, no question,” he said. “I mean, who doesn’t want to see Nick

Chester’s Holden tearing out of Turn 1 and down the straight? The GT cars that will compete will be completely at home on the international layout and it will be great to see the smaller teams and less exotic machinery from both the one and three hour fields adapt and get used to the circuit layout. “It’s such a rare opportunity and we are

optimistic of an impressive field in both endurance races.” Great drivers and great cars are a feature of the endurance scene in New Zealand and the big race weekend could include GT machinery from Audi, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin and Chevrolet as well as drivers like former A1GP racer Jonny Reid, New Zealand touring car and

V8 Supercar icon Paul Radisich and Asian GT driver Jono Lester. The North Island vs South Island Cup is also up for grabs and although it has been in the hands of the South Island for the past two seasons, an optimistic but tongue-in-cheek McBeath reckons its heading back to the North Island this time around.
