O
riginal styling inspired by the legendary ‘59 Bonneville, with iconic styling cues, detailing and features Based on the timeless Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T100, the new for 2020 Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T100 Bud Ekins Special Editions celebrate Bud Ekins, a genuine motorcycle legend. A professional stuntman and top class motocross and desert racer, Bud also ran Triumph’s biggest American dealership of the time in Sherman Oaks, California, where he became a close friend and the riding partner of a host of Hollywood stars from Steve McQueen, to Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood. The 2020 Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T100 Bud Ekins Special Editions take all of the classic style and modern capability of the standard Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T100 and bring an even higher standard of finish, including Exclusive California-inspired tank design with striking California ‘flying globe’ logo, unique Triumph heritage tank logo, unique Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T100 Bud Ekins logo on the side panels and dedicated front mudguard paint finish with beautiful California ‘flying globe’ logo. In addition to their unique paint scheme, the T120 and T100 Bud Ekins Special Editions also feature a host of premium details that further enhance their individual style and one-off positioning. Born in Los Angeles in 1930, Bud Ekins learned to ride in the nearby Hollywood Hills, honing his off-road skills long before
he could legally ride on the road. Luckily, California was host to a thriving off-road racing fraternity and even by his late teenage years he earned a mighty reputation as one of SoCal’s top motocross and desert racers. • Latest facelift Bill By the time US Triumph superdealer • 15,000km Johnson provided Ekins with a TR5 Trophy, 2.8L Turbo on which he won the• Catalina GrandDiesel Prix, Ekins knows well that in Triumph he has found a manufacturer that builds the kind
of strong, fast and light motorcycles with all the agility, responsiveness and power that he yearns for. Ekins’ success in the mid-fifties coincided with Triumph’s emergence as a major player in world motorcycling, with both parties playing their roles in re-defining what a motorcycle was capable of. Triumph’s famous managing director and design chief, Edward Turner, continued to develop incredible Triumph twin
engine motorcycles which were becoming increasingly powerful, efficient and reliable. In 1956, when Ekins finished second in the 153-mile off-road Californian Big Bear Motorcycle Run, the first-, second- and third-placed riders were all on Triumph TR6 Trophy motorcycles. Triumph’s racing domination was such that when Ekins won the same race the next year, 20 of the top 25 finishers were all on Triumphs.

KING OF THE CASTLE
T
his small, distinctive Lexus looks very much at home with the Riverstone castle as a backdrop. So thoughts at the time were that this classy, nicely-sized, easy to drive UX could likely be entirely suitable transport for the resident royalty. It was for us, when making an unexpected dash to Mosgiel. For both ways the navigator, in this case the ‘Queen of Harts’ (Rowena) commented on the excellence of her white leather clad, nicely contoured front passenger seat. The distinctive exterior, which I suggest gives the UX a touch of visual identity, arises through the combination of the latest version of Lexus’ signature grille, the sharp lines, pronounced mudguards and 18-inch alloys. There’s seven different UX variants, including Limited and F Sport versions. As well there’s the choice of front or all-wheel drive to suit various wants and needs. Two of the seven have conventional power courtesy of 2-litre 126 kW/205 Nm petrol engines while the other five, as had the test 250h Limited, have self-charging petrol/hybrid electric powertrains. With the combination of 2-litre petrol ‘Atkinson cycle’ engine and the hybrid systems battery/elecric motors contribution they are rated at 135 kW. Their e-CVT keeps the hybrid system working in its most effective state, meaning they are quick (and quiet) away from standstill around town and will as conditions allow, do 0-100kmh in just under 10seconds. While selecting the Sport function was best on likes of Kilmog and Dunedin’s northern motorway, staying in Normal
while driving on the flat the hybrid system still delivers a nice quick overtaking response. Going downhill and during some driving on flat terrain, both on the open road and about town, the system switches to electric power only. The claimed combined fuel consumption is 4.5L/100 km. but with lots of hill and open road driving featuring in our journey, the trip computer showed 6.2L/100km. The UX’s sit on the latest C platform, which Lexus say with its low centre of gravity provides a hatchback-like driving experience with easy manoeuvrability in the city and nimble handling on the open road. It was certainly easy to drive about and park in Dunedin city. On the open road, while the handling and cornering are perhaps more focused on the comfort side, the Limited proved to be suitably nimble and certainly both enjoyable and involving enough when required. There was some tyre noise on the coarsest chip. Of course those looking for the sportiest possible handling and performing UX will likely forgo some of the extra luxuries the Limited has (13-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system; sunroof etc) and choose a similarlily costing 250h F Sport. It has extra selectable drive modes including Sport S+, adaptive variable suspension; F Sport alloy wheels; even more contoured sports front seats with ventilation, steering wheel paddles and more. But whichever UX it is the cabin presentation will be particularly smart with high quality trim materials and the
Roger Hart ROAD TEST
expected Lexus detail to fit and finish. Combined with the white leather furnishings, (darker options are available) including the head lining and the large sun roof, the test car’s cabin was always a light and airy place for four (five at a pinch) to be. While the dash has many different curves and angles, these all merge together very nicely. The controls proved easy to find and straightforward to use. Well, perhaps not so much the infotainment touch-pad, which initially was a tad frustrating. Of course there’s a very high level of standard equipment, with lots of safety and driver aids. The latter includes an excellent allspeed dynamic radar cruise control, a colour heads-up display, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors; smart key entry 10.3 inch screen, sat-nav tenway driver and eight-way front passenger seat electric adjustment; dual zone climate air, rain sensing wipers and more. Additional standard safety features for the entire UX range includes blind spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, night time pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection, the pre-collision
system, as well as lane tracing and road sign assists. While the luggage space is said to hold just 220 litres, it seemed larger and was adequate for our travels. There’s no spare wheel, just an inflation kit meaning there’s additional storage under the luggage area floor.
LEXUS UX 250H ■■ Costs: $72,990 – other UX from $59,990 to $75,990 (all +ORCs) ■■ Engine: 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder petrol/hybrid-135kW in total. ■■ Transmission: e-CVT and front-wheeldrive. ■■ Quoted Overall Economy: 4.5L/100km. ■■ Safety: 5 star ANCAP and a host of driver assistance/safety systems. ■■ Turning Circle: 10.4 metres. ■■ Warranty etc: transferrable 4-year unlimited warranty along with 4 years of full mantenance service/roadside assist. ew Zealand motorsport enthusiasts will now have the opportunity to view the new Jaguar XE SV Project 8, the world’s fastest production four-door sedan, which has arrived in the country. With a starting price of $350,000, each of the 300 limited edition vehicles are hand-assembled and, have been described as the most powerful, agile and extreme performance Jaguar production car ever. The All-Wheel Drive 600PS 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol Project 8, which has a top speed of 320kmph and accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 3.4 seconds, set a new four-door production car record around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany – the gold standard for all-round high performance. Its best lap of 7 min 21.23 sec was quicker than many supercars. Jaguar Land Rover NZ general manager Steve Kenchington says they anticipate significant local interest from local enthusiasts. “With a top speed of 320kmph, and a 5.0 litre supercharged V8 which can deliver maximum power

of 600PS and torque of 700Nm, the Project 8 Supercar encapsulates Jaguar’s vision of the ultimate sports saloon “News of the vehicle’s pending arrival here has seen buyer interest from around New Zealand and the retailer roadshow is expected to give more potential customers the opportunity to experience the new model first hand,” he says. Kenchington says the XE SV Project 8 will make its first appearance in Auckland from today before making its way around the country on a Jaguar retailer roadshow as well as Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO Day in December and the Art of Performance Tour in mid-February. “New Zealand customers that may be interested in purchasing this limited production model should contact their local authorised retailer to register their interest,” he says. A limited number of pre-specified Project 8s are available for prospective buyers to purchase in most markets, subject to terms and conditions. Specifications of the vehicles have been selected based on the most popular choices.
Mustangs and Route 66 – who could resist?
T
he Ford Mustang is recognised as one of America’s great brand legends, then the iconic Route 66 must be a close second. What better then than to see these two great brands come together at the Ford National Mustang Convention 2020, with the announcement that Gilligans Route 66 Tours will be a key gold sponsor when 200 Mustangs gather at Te Pae Convention Centre Christchurch next October. Sam Murray of Gilligans Tours, is
especially enthusiastic. “Many Mustang owners, club members and enthusiasts from all over New Zealand have already travelled the world’s most famous highway driving Mustangs with Gilligans since 2014. “Therefore supporting the 2020 Convention was a perfect fit for us. “By partnering with this event, it’s not only our way of giving thanks to the club members who have shown their support to Gilligans, but it’s also an opportunity to showcase our tours to people who already
love Mustangs, but who perhaps haven’t yet considered spending 20 or more days driving a Mustang across the fabled Route 66”. The Canterbury Mustang Owners Club, organiser of the 2020 Convention, is delighted to see these two great brands aligned through the Gilligan’s sponsorship. Mike Dilger, Vice President, said “Gilligans’ sponsorship adds further energy to our organising efforts, and will certainly help us increase the profile and success of what is shaping up to be a great event at Te
Pae, Christchurch in 2020”. The final word goes to Gilligans. “If you own a Mustang, and you like driving, then the chances are you really enjoy a road trip. “A Route 66 tour with Gilligans isn’t just about cars, neon signs, burgers, V8 engines and drive-thrus. “It’s about the history and characters on the road, throughout the entire journey. “If there is ever an ultimate road trip, Route 66 with us has gotta be on the list!”

The legend evolves
T
he name Thruxton is an internationally-acclaimed motorcycle racing icon, born from incredible success at the Thruxton 500 race and the Isle of Man TT, inspiring a whole generation of fanatical cafe racers. Designed and developed to evolve the legend even further, the new Thruxton RS model combines all the original cafe racer design DNA and pure original style with modern Thruxton capability whilst setting a new level of performance with a higher power engine, even more supreme cafe racer handling, and even more contemporary styling, finish and detailing.
Higher power – updated Thruxton RS engine
The new Thruxton RS achieves 8PS more power than the previous Thruxton R. This is delivered by significant engine upgrades including high compression pistons, revised ports and cam profile, a secondary air system and a whole host of lighter weight engine components, including, low inertia crankshaft, clutch, balance shafts, Rare-Earth alternator, magnesium cam cover and thin walled engine covers. Along with the higher power, the Thruxton RS also delivers higher torque punch low down and across the entire rev range, peaking at 112Nm @ 4850 rpm, 700 rpm lower than its predecessor. Together, all these engine updates deliver a 20 per cent reduction of inertia and a new more responsive and characterful Thruxton RS engine that revs harder for longer, revving 500rpm higher than the Thruxton R. The Thruxton RS’ distinctive twin upswept silencers add an all-new Euro 5 spec catalytic converter which delivers lower emissions and that unmistakable sound of a British Racing Twin, with a rich and raw note that matches the bike’s legendary name. Behind the stylish exterior sits a liquid cooling system, carefully integrated to minimise its visual impact and thanks to its Euro 5 homologation, the Thruxton RS achieves lower emissions and enhanced fuel efficiency. Combined with a high first major service interval of 10,000 miles (16,000km), this contributes to a reduced overall cost of ownership.
Higher modern capability
The new Thruxton RS features a full suite of rider-focused technology to deliver advanced rider control and safety, plus enhanced rider confidence – sensitively integrated to maintain its iconic original cafe racer style and character. Thruxton RS technology features include: Upgraded 3 riding modes linked to the ride-by-wire system, the upgraded three selectable riding modes, Sport, Road and Rain, now adjust throttle map, ABS and traction control settings to better suit the riding conditions or rider preference. This is enabled via the latest generation ride by wire, which delivers enhanced rideability, safety and control. The contemporary safety standard, with minimal visual impact, the ABS is responsive yet unobtrusive. Switchable traction control manages the Thruxton RS’ high torque delivery when traction is compromised, the switchable system offers increased rider control. DRL headlight is incorporated into the headlight, the LED daytime running light brings excellent visibility and a distinctive light profile. Built into the cafe racer-inspired minimal tail set-up, the LED rear light brings a distinctive rear light pattern and excellent power efficiency.
The ride-by-wire enhances throttle responsiveness, safety and feel. The clutch is torque-assisted for a lighter touch and feel to make it easier to ride, and ride longer. Elegant switchgear presents simple fingertip controls for easy access to the key features on the twin clocks. For maximum rider convenience, the USB charging socket charges riders’ essential devices. Stylish twin clocks, beautifully detailed and premium, incorporate a digital menu system accessed by the handlebar mounted scroll button. Significant weight savings across the
entire motorcycle make the Thruxton RS six kilograms lighter than the Thruxton R for an even more dynamic and agile ride – delivered by engine component refinements, and a lighter weight battery. In addition to the weight saving, the Thruxton RS also features new category-leading Brembo 4-piston M50 radial monobloc calipers and twin floating Brembo front discs, delivering excellent stopping power, and new unique race-specification Metzeler Racetec RR super sticky tyres. There are also race-bred adjustable Showa USD big piston forks and premium fully adjustable Öhlins piggy back reser-
voir rear shock, delivering an engaged and thrilling ride. More modern and contemporary style A legendary name that has created motorcycling history and represented a generation of cafe racers, the Thruxton is a distinctive, beautiful and authentic motorcycle and the all-new RS version of it is the next evolution of this celebrated name. With all of Triumph’s iconic original cafe racer DNA, married to a new blacked-out custom look, muscular poise and a host of beautifully designed premium features, the Thruxton RS is the most contemporary styled Thruxton ever.
