10 garden improvements to consider before selling your home

N

ovember is a wonderful month in the garden. There are masses of lush green growth, new season vegetables are growing at a rapid rate and summer flowering annuals and roses are bursting with colour. It’s a joy to be outside and this month’s task will keep you active in the sunshine.

Vegetable garden The practice of succession planting is important when it comes to vegetable gardening. It means you stagger your plantings or planting varieties so you do not have them all cropping at once, e.g. you plant a couple of lettuce every two to three weeks. Continue to plant summer vegetables including; beans (dwarf and runner), beetroot, cabbage, celery, corn, cucumber, courgettes, lettuce, pumpkin, radish, tomatoes, and kumara. Water your vegetables regularly but not excessively. Tie up tomatoes and remove lateral growth. Apply side dressings of vegetable fertiliser, especially to those gross feeders e.g. sweet corn.

Flowering annuals Spring flowering annuals should now be in full bloom. Continue planting

seedlings of alyssum, ageratum, asters, cornflowers, cosmos, livingstone daisies, marigolds, nemesias, phlox, petunias, salvias, strawflowers and zinnias. Dead head (removal of dead flowers) the annuals throughout the growing season to encourage continuous blooming.

Fruit trees All fruit trees are in active growth in November and young fruit are forming on pip and stone trees. Fertilise with fruit tree fertiliser to encourage strong, healthy growth – and don’t forget to water it in well. Citrus trees, tangelo seminole and harwood late orange are now ripe and ready for harvesting.

Strawberries November is an excellent month for harvesting strawberries in the home garden. Plants require minimal care but maintain a bed of pea straw or hay around the plants as this helps reduce possible attacks of botrytis (grey mould). Cover the strawberry beds with bird netting where birds are a problem.

Herbs As temperatures rise, herbs thrive!

Trim herbs even if they are not required for the kitchen as this encourages fresh new growth. Basil can now be planted in southern districts as the risk of late frosts has passed.

Roses November is a glorious time for cultivating roses! Bushes are usually covered in blooms and are typically disease free. As with your flowering annuals, remove finished flowers (dead heading) to encourage further flowering of your roses. Feed with Daltons Premium Rose Fertiliser from now until Christmas, add extra Daltons Nutrient Enriched Mulch & Grow and enjoy your blooms.

Container gardens A very simple way to beautify decks, entranceways, balconies and courtyards is to include punnets of flowering annuals. These are a very economical way of producing colour in your containers!

Hedges The spring flush on hedges should now be finished so it’s an ideal time to trim and shape hedges. By trimming a little and often hedges can be maintained in excellent health and form. With newly planted hedges, water and fertilise

regularly to encourage strong healthy growth.

Lawns Lawns are at their very best and it definitely feels like Mowvember with all the new growth! This is the last month to safely sow new lawns or patch up parts of existing lawns. Fertilise with lawn fertiliser, watering immediately after applications. Where ready lawn is to be laid, preparation of the site is critical to success, as is regular watering after installation until the new lawn is well established.

Ornamental trees and shrubs Care of these plants includes fertiliser applications (every five to six weeks), mulching to help retain soil moisture and supress weeds, and pruning after flowering has finished to maintain healthy, sturdy plants. Attempt to create an all year round garden by planting trees and shrubs that flower at different times of the year. Have fun in the garden!
